This paper proposes a heterogeneous real-time baseband astronomical backend solution centered on RFSoC and combined GPU. The solution implemented the integration of the high-performance, completely configurable RF signal link to digitize, process, and transmit increasingly massive radio astronomy signals and provided a highly flexible and scalable scheme for the QTT backend. The RFSoC-based integration RF pre-processing front-end directly digitizes dual-polarization signals at the sampling rate of 2048 MHz and converts them to dual-16-channel data streams for parallel mixing and polyphase decimation filtering. The generated baseband data with 256 MHz center frequency and 100 MHz bandwidth is packaged and output to the GPU server through the 100GbE Interface. Complete processes of direct RF sampling, pre-processing, and high-speed transmission are implemented at the receiver. The GPU server executes real-time post-processing at the remote end. The dynamic configuration of two observation modes can be achieved with frequency resolutions of 3.051 and 0.763 kHz. The H2CO absorption line observations with the Nanshan 26-m radio telescope verified the system's performance and the design's rationality. The digital correlator is one of the most crucial data processing components of a radio telescope array. With the scale of radio interferometeric array growing, many efforts have been devoted to developing a cost-effective and scalable correlator in the field of radio astronomy. In this paper, a 192-input digital correlator with six CASPER ROACH2 boards and seven GPU servers has been deployed as the digital signal processing system for Tianlai cylinder pathfinder located in Hongliuxia observatory. The correlator consists of 192 input signals (96 dual-polarization), 125-MHz bandwidth, and full-Stokes output. The correlator inherits the advantages of the CASPER system, for example, low cost, high performance, modular scalability, and a heterogeneous computing architecture. With a rapidly deployable ROACH2 digital sampling system, a commercially expandable 10 Gigabit switching network system, and a flexible upgradable GPU computing system, the correlator forms a low-cost and easilyupgradable system, poised to support scalable large-scale interferometeric array in the future. The 230 GHz lightcurves of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) predicted by general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and general relativistic ray-tracing (GRRT) models by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration have higher variability M Δ T compared to observations. In this series of papers, we explore the origin of such large brightness variability. In this first paper, we performed large GRRT parameter surveys that span from the optically thin to the optically thick regimes, covering the ion-to-electron temperature ratio under strongly magnetized conditions, R Low, from 1 to 60. We find that increasing R Low can lead to either an increase or a reduction in M Δ T depending on the other model parameters, making it consistent with the observed variability of Sgr A* in some cases. Our analysis of GRRT image snapshots finds that the major contribution to the large M Δ T for the R Low = 1 models comes from the photon ring. However, secondary contributions from the accretion flow are also visible depending on the spin parameter. Our work demonstrates the importance of the electron temperature used for modeling radiatively inefficient accretion flows and places new constraints on the ion-to-electron temperature ratio. The Square Kilometer Array Reconfigurable Application Board (SKARAB) is a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA-based platform designed for the MeerKAT array, to be used for both F- and X/B-engines. The MeerKAT F-engine receives digitized data, thus no samplers are required on the SKARAB-based platform. Among the alternative options available, a high-performing ADC mezzanine board can be used in conjunction with the SKARAB, which allows four 1.4-GHz-wide input channels to be digitized and processed. A broadband differential-MMIC low-noise amplifier (DLNA) using metamorphic high-electron-mobility transistors of 70 nm in Gallium Arsenide (70 nm GaAs mHEMT technology) is presented. The design and results of the performance measurements of the DLNA in the frequency band from 1 to 16 GHz are shown, with a high dynamic range, and a noise figure ( N F ) below 1.3 dB is obtained. In this work, two low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) were designed and manufactured in the OMMIC foundry: a dual LNA, which we call balanced, and a differential LNA, which we call DLNA. However, the paper focuses primarily on DLNA because of its differential architecture. Both use a 70 nm GaAs mHEMT space-qualified technology with a cutoff frequency of 300 GHz. With a low power bias V b i a s / I b i a s (5 V/40.5 mA), N F < 1.07 dB "on wafer" was achieved, from 2 to 16 GHz; while with the measurements made "on jig", N F = 1.1 dB, from 1 to 10 GHz. Furthermore, it was obtained that N F < 1.5 dB, from 1 to 16 GHz, with a figure of merit equal to 145.5 GHz/mW. Finally, with the proposed topology, several LNAs were designed and manufactured, both in the OMMIC process and in other foundries with other processes, such as UMS. The experimental results showed that the N F of the DLNA MMIC with multioctave bandwidth that was built in the frequency range of the L-, S-, C-, and X-bands was satisfactory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a wideband Vivaldi phased array with double band-notched performance for radio astronomy is proposed. To address the issues of radio frequency interference from 5 G mobile communication (4.8–5 GHz) and C-band satellite communication (5.9–6.5 GHz) in radio astronomy system, the hairpin ring resonator (HRR), defected ground structure and λ/2 shorted-circuit stub are utilized together to realize the double notched bands with different bandwidth. The resonate mechanism of the proposed HRR is widely investigated, which exhibits independent and controllable resonances. Meanwhile, λ/2 shorted-circuited stub is adopted for the band notched performance. As the current on the stub is induced along the shorted via to the ground, without participating in radiation, thus the notched frequency is not affected by the scan angle. With these novel and dedicated design, the proposed phased array performs double band-notched performance with high skirt selectivity and deep suppression, within the notched band the maximum rejection level is better than 22.7 dB. This is the first work to implement double notched bands in phased array to the authors' best knowledge. Finally, a prototype composed of 8 × 9 elements is fabricated and measured. In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) released the first-ever image of a black hole event horizon. Astronomers are now aiming for higher angular resolutions of distant targets, like black holes, to understand more about the fundamental laws of gravity that govern our universe. To achieve this higher resolution and increased sensitivity, larger radio telescopes are needed to operate at higher frequencies and in larger quantities. Projects like the next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) and the Square-Kilometer Array (SKA) require building hundreds of telescopes with diameters greater than 10 ms over the next decade. This has a twofold effect. Radio telescope surfaces need to be more accurate to operate at higher frequencies, and the logistics involved in maintaining a radio telescope need to be simplified to support them properly in large quantities. Both of these problems can be solved with improved methods for surface metrology that are faster and more accurate with a higher resolution. This leads to faster and more accurate panel alignment and, therefore, a more productive observatory. In this paper, we present the use of binocular fringe projection profilometry as a solution to this problem and demonstrate it by aligning two panels on a 3-m radio telescope dish. The measurement takes only 10 min and directly delivers feedback on the tip, tilt, and piston of each panel to create the ideal reflector shape. Highlights: Current methods for measuring and aligning radio telescope dishes are insufficient for future astronomy requirements. We've developed a 3D scanning method for measuring full aperture dishes outdoors that is faster, easier, and more reliable than current methods. After years of preparation, the Indonesia National Observatory, located in Mount Timau, Kupang Regency, is currently in the completion stage of research in astronomy and astrophysics and related subjects. An optic telescope with a 3.8 m diameter is expected to receive its first light in mid-2024. A feasibility study for Indonesia's radio telescopes and networks is in progress. A single-dish parabolic radio antenna with a diameter of 20 m is proposed to work in a frequency range of 1–50 GHz. An array dipole antenna with an area of 100 m × 100 m will also be installed at a 70–350 MHz frequency. A feasibility study about system design is in progress, and a radio frequency interference (RFI) survey has been underway since 2014. In this paper, we described the design of radio telescopes such as parabolic reflectors, horn antenna, and the radio frequency interference (RFI) in the surrounding area of the National Observatory, covering the frequency band from 45 MHz to 18 GHz. The frequencies in 45–85 MHz and 120–360 MHz intervals are still relatively quiet and suitable for developing radio telescopes. The selected higher frequency of 1.4 GHz for a neutral hydrogen (HI) spectral line, 6.6 GHz for a methanol (CH3OH) spectral line, and 8.6 GHz for a helium (3 He+) spectral line is still relatively quiet and suitable for the development of radio telescopes. Quasars are characterized by violent and large amplitude variability in all the observation wavelengths, and the analysis of optical variability is useful for developing theoretical models. Long-term optical variability data of quasar 3C 446 were collected from the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory database in the 4.8, 8.0, and 14.5 GHz radio bands from 1976 to 2012. Due to the complexity of the variability data, it's hard to study by the linear time series analysis methods. For learning more about non-linear characteristics of the temporal evolution of quasar variability, the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and nonlinear analysis are used to analyse chaotic dynamics, fractal properties, and periodicity. This paper focuses on whether there is a significant difference between the periodic and non-linear properties of the quasar variability before and after the removal of the periodic or chaotic components. It turns out that the variability of quasar 3C 446 in the radio bands consists of periodic, trend, and chaotic components, and the periodic and trend components are dominant. The periods of the variability after removing the chaotic and trend components are exactly the same as the periods of the original variability data, but the chaotic and fractal characteristics of the two are significantly different. The saturated correlation dimension indicates that the reconstruction of the dynamical system requires more independent parameters than the original optical variables after the removal of the periodic and trend components. The Kolmogorov entropy indicates that the loss of information is greater for the former than the latter, and the system is more chaotic and more complex. The Hurst value indicates that the self-similarity and long-range correlation are slightly stronger for the latter than the former. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted a search for |$\textrm {H}\, \scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$| emission of the gas-rich galaxies in the Vela region (260° ≤ ℓ ≤ 290°, −2° ≤ b ≤ 1°) to explore the Vela Supercluster (VSCL) at V hel ∼ 18 000  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠ , largely obscured by Galactic dust. Within the mostly Radio Frequency Interference-free band (250 < V hel < 25 000  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠) of MeerKAT, the analysis focuses on 157 hexagonally distributed pointings extracted from the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey located in the Vela region (Vela−SMGPS). These were combined into 10 contiguous mosaics, covering an ∼90 square degrees area. Among the 843 |$\textrm {H}\, \scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$| detected sources, 39 were previously discovered in the H  i Parkes Zone of Avoidance survey (V hel < 12 000  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠ ; rms ∼ 6  |$\rm mJy\, beam^{-1}$|⁠). With the improved rms level of the Vela−SMGPS, i.e. 0.29–0.56  |$\rm mJy\, beam^{-1}$|⁠ , our study unveils nearly 12 times more detections (471 candidates) in that same velocity range. We furthermore could identify 187 galaxy candidates with an |$\textrm {H}\, \scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$| mass limit reaching |$\log (M_{\rm HI}/\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }) = 9.44$| in the VSCL velocity range V hel ∼ 19 500 ± 3500  |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠. We find indications of two wall-like overdensities that confirm the original suspicion that these walls intersect at low latitudes around longitudes of ℓ ∼ 272°–278°. We also find a strong signature most likely associated with the Hydra/Antlia extension and evidence of a previously unknown narrow filament at V hel ∼ 12 000 |$\rm km\, s^{-1}$|⁠. This paper demonstrates the efficiency of systematic |$\textrm {H}\, \scriptstyle \mathrm{I}$| surveys with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) precursor MeerKAT, even in the most obscured part of the Zone of Avoidance. Motivated by the unpredictability of stochastic time series, this paper presents an alternative deep learning approach to characterize long-term stochastic fluctuation patterns. The proposed approach considers different deep neural networks (DNNs) carefully applied to 1∕fβ noise time series. The predictive characterization of different noise patterns is determined by the respective spectral index β, which works as a regression-based training attribute. The study is based on synthetic canonical colored noises (white: β=0, pink: β=1, red: β=2) and also turbulent-like pattern with β=5∕3. Five DNNs are used for training based on the spectral patterns of each noise class. A new Fast Fourier Transform centric loss function for training different DNNs models drives hyperparameter exploration for each model using the optuna python package, resulting in 2560 well-established unique Deep Learning Models (DLMs) for the presented methodology. The results show that a predictive characterization of the fluctuation pattern of a stochastic time series is feasible when stochastic fluctuation is the main pattern to be addressed. One of the key factors of space weather is solar flare activity, the monitoring and prediction of which is an important task of specialized dedicated groups of space experts and solar astronomers. Solar flare forecasts are based on identifying and detecting the so-called precursors, specific processes in solar activity events that occur before flares. Collecting data for space weather analysis and prediction comes down to several types of measurements performed by more than a dozen spacecraft. Ground-based observations and monitoring nowadays are becoming more or less complimentary. One of the reasons for this is the limitation of observation time with ground-based telescopes due to adverse Earth weather conditions. However, solar radio astronomy is immune to almost any weather activity, and the main question here is what new quality it can bring. Observational data accumulated in the 20th century show that solar radio bursts can be associated with flare activity. In addition, the existing network of solar radio telescopes is already well established. As an example, in this paper, we describe the possibilities of a fully steerable 32-meter radio telescope of Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre (VIRAC), Latvia, which can be useful for searching for new precursors of solar flares. Imaging interferometric data in radio astronomy requires the use of non-linear algorithms that rely on different assumptions on the source structure and may produce non-unique results. This is especially true for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations, where the sampling of Fourier space is very sparse. A basic tenet in standard VLBI imaging techniques is to assume that the observed source structure does not evolve during the observation. However, the recent VLBI results of the supermassive black hole at our Galactic Centre (Sagittarius A*), recently reported by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, require the development of dynamic imaging algorithms, since it exhibits variability at minute time-scales. In this paper, we introduce a new non-convex optimization problem that extends the standard maximum entropy method (MEM), for reconstructing intra-observation dynamical images from interferometric data that evolve in every integration time. We present a rigorous mathematical formalism to solve the problem via the primal–dual approach. We build a Newton strategy and we give its numerical complexity. We also give a strategy to iteratively improve the obtained solution and, finally, we define a novel figure of merit to evaluate the quality of the recovered solution. Then, we test the algorithm, called the new-generation MEM (ngMEM), in different synthetic data sets, with increasing difficulty. Finally, we compare it with another well-established dynamical imaging method. Within this comparison, we have identified a significant improvement of the ngMEM reconstructions. Moreover, the evaluation of the integration time evolution scheme and the time contribution showed that this method can play a crucial role in obtaining good dynamic reconstructions. This paper presents the first H  i results extracted from the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (SMGPS) – a narrow strip (Δ b ∼ 3°) along the southern Milky Way. The primary goal consisted in tracing the great attractor (GA) wall across the innermost zone of avoidance. We reduced a segment spanning the longitude range 302° ≤ ℓ ≤ 332° for the redshift range z ≤ 0.08. The superb SMGPS sensitivity (rms = 0.3–0.5 mJy beam−1 per 44 km s−1 channel) and angular resolution (∼31″ × 26″) lead to a detection limit of log(M H  i /M⊙) ≥ 8.5 at the GA distance (⁠|$\mbox{$V_{\rm {hel}}$}\, \sim 3500{\!-\!}6500$|  km s−1). A total of 477 galaxy candidates were identified over the full redshift range. A comparison of the few H  i detections with counterparts in the literature (mostly HIZOA) found the H  i fluxes and other H  i parameters to be highly consistent. The continuation of the GA wall is confirmed through a prominent overdensity of N  = 214 detections in the GA distance range. At higher latitudes, the wall moves to higher redshifts, supportive of a possible link with the Ophiuchus cluster located behind the Galactic Bulge. This deep interferometric H  i survey demonstrates the power of the SMGPS in improving our insight of large-scale structures at these extremely low latitudes, despite the high obscuration and continuum background. Mobile communication base stations have become ubiquitous with the popularization and development of mobile communication services. Although the Chinese government has designated a radio quiet zone (RQZ) specifically for Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), the 4G International Mobile Telecommunications (4G-IMT) system is still heavily used to meet the communication needs around the RQZ. To assess the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) caused by 4G-IMT base stations on the performance of FAST, this paper employs the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) deterministic radio wave propagation prediction model. The interference of 4G-IMT base stations on FAST is evaluated based on relevant parameters, such as the frequency used by both FAST and the base station, in conjunction with the FAST threshold protection requirements. The results indicate that 47.73 % of the data exceed the radio astronomy protection threshold of FAST. In addition, a field experiment was conducted to verify the accuracy of the radio wave propagation prediction method used. The root-mean-square error between the predicted value and the measured value was found to be 6.94 dB, supporting the accuracy of the predicted results. The findings of this study can help suppress interference from mobile communication services around the RQZ of FAST and optimize the electromagnetic environment around FAST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present details of the construction of a wideband, cryogenic receiver and its successful commissioning on the Arecibo Observatory 12 m telescope. The cryogenic receiver works in the 2.5–14 GHz frequency range. We upgraded the current narrow band, room temperature receivers of the telescope with the new wideband receiver. The current receiver is built around a Quadruple‐Ridged Flared Horn (QRFH) developed by Akgiray et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.1109/tap.2012.2229953). To mitigate strong radio frequency interference (RFI) below 2.7 GHz, we installed a highpass filter before the first stage low noise amplifier (LNA). The QRFH, highpass filter, noise coupler and LNA are located inside a cryostat and are cooled to 15 K. The measured receiver temperature is 25 K (median value) over 2.5–14 GHz. The system temperature measured at zenith is about 40 K near 3.1 and 8.6 GHz and the zenith antenna gains are 0.025 and 0.018 K/Jy at the two frequencies respectively. We recommend the following improvements to the telescope system: (a) Upgrade the highpass filter to achieve better RFI rejection near 2.5 GHz; (b) Improve aperture efficiency at 8.6 GHz; (c) Upgrade the intermediate frequency system to increase the upper frequency of operation from 12 to 14 GHz. Performance of digitally beamformed phased arrays relies on accurate calibration of the array by obtaining gains of each antenna in the array. The stations of the Square Kilometer Array‐Low (SKA‐Low) are such digital arrays, where the station calibration is currently performed using conventional interferometric techniques. An alternative calibration technique similar to holography of dish based telescopes has been suggested in the past. In this paper, we develop a novel mathematical framework for holography employing tensors, which are multi‐way data structures. Self‐holography using a reference beam formed with the station under test itself and cross‐holography using a different station to obtain the reference beam are unified under the same formalism. Besides, the relation between the two apparently distinct holographic approaches in the literature for phased arrays is shown, and we show that under certain conditions the two methods yield the same results. We test the various holographic techniques on an SKA‐Low prototype station Aperture Array Verification System 2 (AAVS2) with the Sun as the calibrator. We perform self‐holography of AAVS2 and cross‐holography with simultaneous observations carried out with another station Engineering Development Array 2. We find the results from the holographic techniques to be consistent among themselves as well as with a more conventional calibration technique. This paper is an attempt of paying tribute to the memory of Leonid Mykolayovych Lytvynenko (LML), an outstanding Ukrainian scientist, Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences who worked most fruitfully in the fields of radio science and radio astronomy. Starting of 1985, Dr. Lytvynenko was, over a 30-plus years period, at the head of the Institute of Radio Astronomy, Acad. Sci. of the Ukrainian SSR (currently the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) that had been established owing to his vigorous and direct participation in the process. In 1996 LML promoted foundation of a new scientific journal, namely the "Radio Physics and Radio Astronomy", which he devotedly served for, in the Editor-in-Chief capacity, during the 25 years that followed. Dr. L. Lytvynenko was one of the brightest representatives of the school of theoretical radio physics that had developed within the O. Usikov Institute for Radio Physics and Electronics in Kharkiv and further flourished within the Institute of Radio Astronomy. He is known as the founder of a new branch of radio science, specifically theory of electromagnetic wave diffraction and propagation through composite and multilayered periodic structures.

Compact objects across the mass spectrum-from neutron stars to supermassive black holes-are progenitors and/or central engines for some of the most cataclysmic phenomena in the Universe. As such, they are associated with radio emission on a variety of timescales and represent key targets for multi-messenger astronomy. Observations of transients in the radio band can unveil the physics behind their central engines, ejecta, and the properties of their surroundings, crucially complementing information on their progenitors gathered from observations of other messengers (such as gravitational waves and neutrinos). In this contribution, we summarize observational opportunities and challenges ahead in the multi-messenger study of neutron stars and black holes using radio observations. We highlight the specific contribution of current U.S. national radio facilities and discuss expectations for the field focusing on the science that could be enabled by facilities recommended by the 2020 Decadal survey such as the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). We report high angular resolution observations, made with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in band 6, of high excitation molecular lines of CH 3 CN and SO2 and of the H29 α radio recombination line toward the G345.0061+01.794 B HC H ii region in order to investigate the physical and kinematical characteristics of its surroundings. Emission was detected in all observed components of the J = 14 →13 rotational ladder of CH 3 CN and in the 304,26–303,27, and 324,28–323,29 lines of SO2. The peak of the velocity-integrated molecular emission is located ∼0.″4 northwest of the peak of the continuum emission. The first-order moment images and channel maps show a velocity gradient of 1.1 km s−1 arcsec−1 across the source and a distinctive spot of blueshifted emission toward the peak of the zero-order moment. The rotational temperature is found to decrease from 252±24 K at the peak position to 166±16 K at its edge, indicating that our molecular observations are probing a hot molecular core that is internally excited. The emission in the H29 α line arises from a region of 0.″65 in size, where its peak coincides with that of the dust continuum. We model the kinematical characteristics of the "central blue spot" feature as due to infalling motions, suggesting a central mass of 172.8±8.8 M ⊙. Our observations indicate that this HC H ii region is surrounded by a compact structure of hot molecular gas, which is rotating and infalling toward a central mass, that is most likely confining the ionized region. The observed scenario is reminiscent of a "butterfly pattern" with an approximately edge-on torus and ionized gas roughly parallel to its rotation axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the Royal Society meeting in 2023, we have mainly presented our lunar orbit array concept called DSL, and also briefly introduced a concept of a lunar surface array, LARAF. As the DSL concept had been presented before, in this article, we introduce the LARAF. We propose to build an array in the far side of the Moon, with a master station which handles the data collection and processing, and 20 stations with maximum baseline of 10 km. Each station consists of 12 membrane antenna units, and the stations are connected to the master station by power line and optical fibre. The array will make interferometric observation in the 0.1–50 MHz band during the lunar night, powered by regenerated fuel cells. The whole array can be carried to the lunar surface with a heavy rocket mission, and deployed with a rover in eight months. Such an array would be an important step in the long-term development of lunar-based ultralong wavelength radio astronomy. It has a sufficiently high sensitivity to observe many radio sources in the sky, though still short of the dark age fluctuations. At redshifts beyond z≳30 , the 21 cm line from neutral hydrogen is expected to be essentially the only viable probe of the three-dimensional matter distribution. The lunar far-side is an extremely appealing site for future radio arrays that target this signal, as it is protected from terrestrial radio frequency interference, and has no ionosphere to attenuate and absorb radio emission at low frequencies (tens of MHz and below). We forecast the sensitivity of low-frequency lunar radio arrays to the bispectrum of the 21 cm brightness temperature field, which can in turn be used to probe primordial non-Gaussianity generated by particular early universe models. We account for the loss of particular regions of Fourier space due to instrumental limitations and systematic effects, and predict the sensitivity of different representative array designs to local-type non-Gaussianity in the bispectrum, parametrized by fNL. Under the most optimistic assumption of sample variance-limited observations, we find that σ(fNL)≲0.01 could be achieved for several broad redshift bins at z≳30 if foregrounds can be removed effectively. These values degrade to between σ(fNL)∼0.03 and 0.7 for z=30 to z=170 , respectively, when a large foreground wedge region is excluded. The hydrogen 21-cm signal is predicted to be the richest probe of the young Universe, including those eras known as the cosmic Dark Ages, the Cosmic Dawn (when the first star and black hole formed) and the Epoch of Reionization. This signal holds the key to deciphering processes that take place at the early stages of cosmic history. In this opinion piece, we discuss the potential scientific merit of lunar observations of the 21-cm signal and their advantages over more affordable terrestrial efforts. The Moon is a prime location for radio cosmology which will enable precision observations of the low-frequency radio sky. The uniqueness of such observations is that they will provide an unparalleled opportunity to test cosmology and the nature of dark matter using the Dark Ages 21-cm signal. No less enticing is the opportunity to obtain a much clearer picture of the Cosmic Dawn than that currently achievable from the ground, which will allow us to determine the properties of the first stars and black holes. Radio astronomy file formats are now required to store wide frequency bandwidths and multiple simultaneous receiver beams and must be able to account for versatile observing modes and numerous calibration strategies. The need to capture and archive high-time and high frequency-resolution data, along with the comprehensive metadata that fully describe the data, implies that a new data format and new processing software are required. This requirement is suited to a well-defined, hierarchically-structured and flexible file format. In this paper we present the Spectral-Domain Hierarchical Data Format ('SDHDF') — a new file format for radio astronomy data, in particular for single dish or beam-formed data streams. Since 2018, SDHDF has been the primary format for data products from the spectral-line and continuum observing modes at Murriyang, the CSIRO Parkes 64-metre radio telescope, and we demonstrate that this data format can also be used to store observations of pulsars and fast radio bursts. The computational requirements of future large scale radio telescopes are expected to scale well beyond the capabilities of conventional digital resources. Current and planned telescopes are generally limited in their scientific potential by their ability to efficiently process the vast volumes of generated data. To mitigate this problem, we investigate the viability of emerging quantum computers for radio astronomy applications. In this a paper we demonstrate the potential use of variational quantum linear solvers in Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers and combinatorial solvers in quantum annealers for a radio astronomy calibration pipeline. While we demonstrate that these approaches can lead to satisfying results when integrated in calibration pipelines, we show that current restrictions of quantum hardware limit their applicability and performance. This paper describes the design and experimental behavior of a 2nd iterated modified Square Ring Shaped Fractal Antenna (SRSFA). The radiator geometry consists of three symmetrical square-shaped rings loaded with circular patterns at the corners. The designed fractal patch is placed on a slot loaded ground structure. The electrical dimensions possessed by the realized structure are 0.15λ 0 x 0.15λ 0 x 0.080 λ 0 , and the whole antenna is implemented using FR4 substrate. In this design, transmission line width 'W F ' and position 'F P ' are optimized using Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) strategies. It has been examined that the optimized values of 'W F ' and 'F P ' using SFLA and ABC are 2.6 and 12.4 mm, and 3.2 and 15.9 mm, respectively. Results reveal that SFLA offers better solution quality and convergence speed than ABC. Further, experimental analysis has been demonstrated to effectively illustrate the recommended fractal approach. The equivalent circuit of the designed structure is implemented successfully. The conducted measurements show that for VSWR ≤ 2, the fabricated structure produces six resonance points with adorable S11 values. The resonances appear at 1.53 GHz (1.35–1.67 GHz), 4.30 GHz (4.20–4.40 GHz), 7.58 GHz (7.43–7.70 GHz), 11.35 GHz (10.37–11.58 GHz), 14.03 GHz (13.85–14.35 GHz), and 15.93 GHz (15.43–16.25 GHz). The examined −10 dB impedance bandwidth at the respective resonance points is 20.9 %, 4.6 %, 3.5 %, 11.3 %, 2.9 %, and 5.23 %. Healthy concordance is noticed among the experimental measurements and electromagnetic simulations. The demonstrated radiation patterns are arbitrary bidirectional/omnidirectional at the respective resonances with good stability. Additionally, the offered gain is within the range of 4.91–7.00 dB. Hence, by utilizing the above-mentioned approaches, miniaturization of 65 % has been achieved. Practical outcomes suggest that the introduced prototype exhibiting multiband behavior, can be effectively applied in Radio location, Radio astronomy, Long-range tracking, Weather location Broadcasting, Search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, Radar altimeters, High resolution mapping, Aeronavigation, and Miscellaneous Radars. We present a new upper limit on the cosmic molecular gas density at z = 2.4–3.4 obtained using the first year of observations from the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). COMAP data cubes are stacked on the 3D positions of 243 quasars selected from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) catalog, yielding a 95% upper limit for flux from CO(1–0) line emission of 0.129 Jy km s−1. Depending on the balance of the emission between the quasar host and its environment, this value can be interpreted as an average CO line luminosity L CO ′ of eBOSS quasars of ≤1.26 × 1011 K km pc2 s−1, or an average molecular gas density ρ H 2 in regions of the Universe containing a quasar of ≤1.52 × 108 M ⊙ cMpc−3. The L CO ′ upper limit falls among CO line luminosities obtained from individually targeted quasars in the COMAP redshift range, and the ρ H 2 value is comparable to upper limits obtained from other line intensity mapping (LIM) surveys and their joint analyses. Further, we forecast the values obtainable with the COMAP/eBOSS stack after the full 5 yr COMAP Pathfinder survey. We predict that a detection is probable with this method, depending on the CO properties of the quasar sample. Based on the achieved sensitivity, we believe that this technique of stacking LIM data on the positions of traditional galaxy or quasar catalogs is extremely promising, both as a technique for investigating large galaxy catalogs efficiently at high redshift and as a technique for bolstering the sensitivity of LIM experiments, even with a fraction of their total expected survey data. With the ongoing growth in radio communications, there is an increased contamination of radio astronomical source data, which hinders the study of celestial radio sources. In many cases, fast mitigation of strong radio frequency interference (RFI) is valuable for studying short lived radio transients so that the astronomers can perform detailed observations of celestial radio sources. The standard method to manually excise contaminated blocks in time and frequency makes the removed data useless for radio astronomy analyses. This motivates the need for better RFI mitigation techniques for array of size M antennas. Although many solutions for mitigating strong RFI improves the quality of the final celestial source signal, many standard approaches require all the eigenvalues of the spatial covariance matrix (R ∈ ℂ M × M ) of the received signal, which has O (M 3) computation complexity for removing RFI of size d where d ≪ M. In this work, we investigate two approaches for RFI mitigation, (1) the computationally efficient Lanczos method based on the Quadratic Mean to Arithmetic Mean (QMAM) approach using information from previously-collected data under similar radio-sky-conditions, and (2) an approach using a celestial source as a reference for RFI mitigation. QMAM uses the Lanczos method for finding the Rayleigh–Ritz values of the covariance matrix R , thus, reducing the computational complexity of the overall approach to O (d M 2). Our numerical results, using data from the radio observatory Long Wavelength Array (LWA-1), demonstrate the effectiveness of both proposed approaches to remove strong RFI, with the QMAM-based approach still being computationally efficient. The article presents a brief review of cooling systems that ensure various temperature levels (from 0.1 K to 230 K) for radio astronomical receivers of photonic and electronic (or optical and radio) devices. The features of various cooling levels and the requirements for the design of the cooling systems are considered in detail, as well as the approaches to designing interfaces for cooled receivers: vacuum, cryogenic, electrical, mechanical, optical, and other interfaces required for effective operation. The presented approaches to design are illustrated by a series of joint developments of the authors carried out over the past 45 years, including those produced over the past year. The digital correlator is one of the most crucial data processing components of a radio telescope array. With the scale of radio interferometeric array growing, many efforts have been devoted to developing a cost-effective and scalable correlator in the field of radio astronomy. In this paper, a 192-input digital correlator with six CASPER ROACH2 boards and seven GPU servers has been deployed as the digital signal processing system for Tianlai cylinder pathfinder located in Hongliuxia observatory. The correlator consists of 192 input signals (96 dual-polarization), 125-MHz bandwidth, and full-Stokes output. The correlator inherits the advantages of the CASPER system, for example, low cost, high performance, modular scalability, and a heterogeneous computing architecture. With a rapidly deployable ROACH2 digital sampling system, a commercially expandable 10 Gigabit switching network system, and a flexible upgradable GPU computing system, the correlator forms a low-cost and easily-upgradable system, poised to support scalable large-scale interferometeric array in the future.

This paper presents the methodology followed for the design of a quad-ridged flared horn (QRFH) feed for the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) antennas. The study demonstrates the potential undesired effects caused by the presence of non-fundamental modes at the throat of the horn antenna, and how they can be avoided following some design considerations. The approach consists of a separate design of the feeding transition and the flared section of the horn, and it can be extrapolated to other implementations. Firstly, the geometry of the coaxial to quad-ridged waveguide (QRWG) transition is defined. The proposed design technique ensures negligible propagation of higher order modes at the waveguide interface. Secondly, the ridges and sidewall profiles of the flared part are optimized to achieve the desired performance in terms of input reflection and aperture efficiency on the VGOS 13.2-meter displaced-axis two-reflector radio telescope. Following the optimized design, five QRFH antenna units have been manufactured and tested, all showing reflection coefficients better than -10 dB and predicted aperture efficiencies better than 55 % in the band from 2.2 to 14 GHz. The excellent agreement between simulations and experimental results demonstrates the validity of the proposed methodology.

This article presents the results of evaluating the possibility of conducting radio astronomy studies in the windows of atmospheric transparency ~100, ~230, and ~350 GHz using the optical Big Telescope Alt-Azimuthal (BTA) of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS). A list of some promising astronomical tasks is proposed. The astroclimat conditions at the BTA site and possible optical, cryogenic, and mechanical interfaces for mounting a superconducting radio receiver at the focus of the optical telescope are considered. As a receiving system, arrays of detectors cooled to ~0.3 K based on the superconductor–insulator–normal metal–insulator–superconductor (SINIS) structure are proposed. The implementation of the project will make it possible to use the BTA site of the SAO RAS not only to solve some astronomical problems (it is possible to consider the implementation of a single observatory, the VLBI (very-long-baseline interferometry) mode in the Suffa, EHT (Event Horizon Telescope), and Millimetron projects), but it will also be used to test various cryogenic detectors in a real observatory. A broadband differential-MMIC low-noise amplifier (DLNA) using metamorphic high-electron-mobility transistors of 70 nm in Gallium Arsenide (70 nm GaAs mHEMT technology) is presented. The design and results of the performance measurements of the DLNA in the frequency band from 1 to 16 GHz are shown, with a high dynamic range, and a noise figure (NF) below 1.3 dB is obtained. In this work, two low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) were designed and manufactured in the OMMIC foundry: a dual LNA, which we call balanced, and a differential LNA, which we call DLNA. However, the paper focuses primarily on DLNA because of its differential architecture. Both use a 70 nm GaAs mHEMT space-qualified technology with a cutoff frequency of 300 GHz. With a low power bias Vbias/Ibias (5 V/40.5 mA), NF < 1.07 dB “on wafer” was achieved, from 2 to 16 GHz; while with the measurements made “on jig”, NF = 1.1 dB, from 1 to 10 GHz. Furthermore, it was obtained that NF < 1.5 dB, from 1 to 16 GHz, with a figure of merit equal to 145.5 GHz/mW. Finally, with the proposed topology, several LNAs were designed and manufactured, both in the OMMIC process and in other foundries with other processes, such as UMS. The experimental results showed that the NF of the DLNA MMIC with multioctave bandwidth that was built in the frequency range of the L-, S-, C-, and X-bands was satisfactory.

This paper presents an investigation of the spectral properties of 10 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered by the uGMRT, observed from 2017 to 2023 using band 3 (300–500 MHz) and 4 (550–750 MHz) of the uGMRT. For these MSPs, we have reported a range of spectral indices from ∼0 to −4.8, while averaging the full observing band and all the observing epochs. For every MSP, we calculated the mean flux density across 7–8 subbands, each with approximately 25 MHz bandwidth spanning band 3 and band 4. We computed their modulation indices as well as average and maximum-to-median flux density within each subband. Using the temporal variations of the flux density we calculated the refractive scintillation timescales and estimated a structure function with a time lag for eight MSPs in the sample. We note a significant temporal evolution of the in-band spectra, classified into three categories based on the nature of the best-fit power-law spectra, having single positive spectral indices, multiple broken power laws, and single negative spectral indices. Additionally, indications of a low-frequency turnover and temporal variations of the turnover frequency (to the extent that turnover was observed for some of the epochs while not seen for the rest) were noted for all the MSPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation probing temporal changes in MSP spectra as well as in the turnover frequency. Future exploration with dense monitoring combined with the modeling of spectra can provide vital insight into the intrinsic emission properties of MSPs and interstellar medium properties.

In 2021, a catalog of 536 fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope was released by the CHIME/FRB Collaboration. This large collection of bursts, observed with a single instrument and uniform selection effects, has advanced our understanding of the FRB population. Here we update the results for 140 of these FRBs for which channelized raw voltage (“baseband”) data are available. With the voltages measured by the telescope’s antennas, it is possible to maximize the telescope sensitivity in any direction within the primary beam, an operation called “beamforming.” This allows us to increase the signal-to-noise ratios of the bursts and to localize them to subarcminute precision. The improved localizations are also used to correct the beam response of the instrument and to measure fluxes and fluences with an ∼10% uncertainty. Additionally, the time resolution is increased by 3 orders of magnitude relative to that in the first CHIME/FRB catalog, and, applying coherent dedispersion, burst morphologies can be studied in detail. Polarization information is also available for the full sample of 140 FRBs, providing an unprecedented data set to study the polarization properties of the population. We release the baseband data beamformed to the most probable position of each FRB. These data are analyzed in detail in a series of accompanying papers.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence includes efforts to constrain populations of artificial broadcasts in other galaxies. Previous efforts use individualist methods, searching for single broadcasts with high signal-to-noise ratio. These would be detected as observables with extreme values. This approach is limited to very bright broadcasts and also is subject to confusion, where a large number of broadcasts blend together to form a noise continuum. The mean value of the total emission provides an additional collective bound: the luminosity of the transmitters is no higher than the galaxy’s observed luminosity. Using the framework developed in Paper I, I evaluate how confusion affects individualist searches. I then compare individualist and collective approaches for radio broadcasts from the Milky Way, M31, and three Virgo Cluster elliptical galaxies. For current observations, confusion blurs narrowband radio broadcasts together in the Virgo ellipticals when there is one broadcast per gigahertz per 1000 stars. The collective bound implies fewer than $\sim {10}^{6}{(\bar{{\ell }}/{10}^{13}\ {\rm{W}})}^{-1}$ L -band broadcasts per star per gigahertz in the Milky Way wideband and is about 10 and 400 times stronger in M31 and M59, respectively. Applying the collective bound to the far-infrared–radio correlation yields constraints on radio broadcast populations in star-forming galaxies throughout the Universe. The collective bound allows us to rule out large regions of broadcast population parameter space even for distant galaxies. It also imposes constraints on gamma-ray, neutrino, and gravitational-wave broadcasts in the nearest galaxies.

NICER has observed a few millisecond pulsars where the geometry of the X-ray-emitting hotspots on the neutron star have been analyzed in order to constrain the mass and radius from X-ray light-curve modeling. One example, PSR J0030 + 0451, has been shown to possibly have significant multipolar magnetic fields at the stellar surface. Using force-free simulations of the magnetosphere structure, it has been shown that the radio, X-ray, and γ -ray light curves can be modeled simultaneously with an appropriate field configuration. An even more stringent test is to compare predictions of the force-free magnetosphere model with observations of radio polarization. This paper attempts to reproduce the radio polarization of PSR J0030 + 0451 using a force-free magnetospheric solution. As a result of our modeling, we can reproduce certain features of the polarization well.

After years of preparation, the Indonesia National Observatory, located in Mount Timau, Kupang Regency, is currently in the completion stage of research in astronomy and astrophysics and related subjects. An optic telescope with a 3.8 m diameter is expected to receive its first light in mid-2024. A feasibility study for Indonesia’s radio telescopes and networks is in progress. A single-dish parabolic radio antenna with a diameter of 20 m is proposed to work in a frequency range of 1–50 GHz. An array dipole antenna with an area of 100 m × 100 m will also be installed at a 70–350 MHz frequency. A feasibility study about system design is in progress, and a radio frequency interference (RFI) survey has been underway since 2014. In this paper, we described the design of radio telescopes such as parabolic reflectors, horn antenna, and the radio frequency interference (RFI) in the surrounding area of the National Observatory, covering the frequency band from 45 MHz to 18 GHz. The frequencies in 45–85 MHz and 120–360 MHz intervals are still relatively quiet and suitable for developing radio telescopes. The selected higher frequency of 1.4 GHz for a neutral hydrogen (HI) spectral line, 6.6 GHz for a methanol (CH3OH) spectral line, and 8.6 GHz for a helium (3 He+) spectral line is still relatively quiet and suitable for the development of radio telescopes.
