Various treatments, such as alkaline and silane treatments, are commonly applied to natural fillers before production to enhance their quality, thermal stability, and water absorption capacity and improve the fiber–matrix interface properties. However, these processes are not environmentally friendly and may escalate the production cost of composites due to the need for additional processing steps in mass production. This study delves into the impact of untreated walnut shell (WS) filler material, employed in varying ratios (ranging from 10 to 40%) as a filler, on the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and physical properties of environmentally friendly polylactic acid (PLA) matrix composites. The experimental results highlight a significant decrease in tensile modulus by 28%, tensile strength ranging from 32 to 65%, a decrease in flexural modulus by 22%, and flexural strength ranging from 24 to 58% with varying WS filler ratios. Time-dependent water absorption and increased density were observed. FT-IR analysis indicates structural similarities, while DSC results show minimal effects on glass transition temperature and crystallinity. TGA results reveal reduced thermal stability with increasing WS content. SEM microstructure imaging demonstrates homogeneous WS particle distribution, but higher WS content leads to increased brittleness and diminished resistance properties. The drastic increase in the amount of packaging waste from conventional plastics, caused by improper waste management, is a serious challenge for the planet. It is therefore worth considering how we can solve this problem. Thus, it is necessary to develop new polymeric materials that retain the functional properties of traditional plastics but are susceptible to degradation with the participation of microorganisms. The development of new eco-friendly materials requires a holistic approach in terms of their disposal. Organic recycling enables the disposal of biodegradable packaging along with food remains that are difficult to remove. The article presents a study on the degradation of biocomposites of polylactide with cork in various environments (water, buffer, and compost). The obtained results indicate a clear influence of the presence of the filler and its amount on the degradation profile of the composites. In addition, the effect of sample shrinkage was observed, especially during degradation in water, where the pH decreases during the process due to the appearance of degradation products. This effect may be important not only for the degradation profile of the packaging but also during its use. Packaging distorted due to shrinkage may be a sign of improper product storage. Agricultural activities contribute to numerous waste problems and have emerged as a significant environmental concern. Nondegradable plastic residues decompose, releasing microplastics and affecting ecosystems and the environment. Consequently, biodegradable bio-composite films consisting of polylactic acid (PLA), natural rubber (NR), and rice straw (RS) have been developed with the aim of using them in agricultural applications. In this study, the PLA/NR blend, at a fixed ratio of 60/40 wt%, was filled with 3 and 5 wt% RS powder and extruded through a slit die into films. The biodegradability of all films was examined after being buried for 90 days in soil with a moisture content of 30% by weight. The neat PLA film showed the lowest weight loss percentage, 3.33%, suggesting a comparatively slower degradation rate in comparison to the PLA/NR(60:40) blend and all bio-composite films. The presence of 40 wt% NR in the film helped accelerate the biodegradation process during soil burial. The film produced from PLA/NR 60:40 wt% matrix filled with RS at 5 wt% led to rapid degradation, leading to a weight loss of 8.30%. From SEM micrographs, the morphology of all polymers after burial in soil showed fractures, the formation of pores, and obvious surface indications of fungi growing. The content of carbon decreased after soil burial, while oxygen content increased, and nitrogen was detected. The XRD analysis revealed low crystallinity in the neat PLA, consistent with the DSC analysis. The addition of NR and RS to the composites led to an increase in the crystallinity of PLA phase. All investigated materials exhibited an increase in crystallinity after being buried in soil. An innovative microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) natural fibre powder-reinforced PLA biocomposite was investigated using the hand lay-up technique. The polymer matrix composite (PMC) samples were prepared by varying the weight percentages (wt.%) of both PLA matrix and MCC reinforcement: pure PLA/100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50 wt.%, respectively. From the results obtained, MCC powder, with its impressive aspect ratio, proved to be an ideal reinforcement for the PLA, exhibiting exceptional mechanical properties. It was evident that the 80:20 wt.% biocomposite sample exhibited the maximum improvement in the tensile, flexural, notched impact, compressive strength and hardness by 28.85%, 20.00%, 91.66%, 21.53% and 35.82%, respectively compared to the pure PLA sample. Similarly, during the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the same 80:20 wt.% biocomposite sample showed a minimum weight loss of 20% at 400°C, among others. The morphological study using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed that the uniform distribution of cellulose reinforcement in the PLA matrix actively improved the mechanical properties of the biocomposites, especially the optimal 80:20 wt.% sample. Importantly, it was evident that the optimal PLA/cellulose biocomposite sample could be a suitable and alternative sustainable, environmentally friendly and biodegradable material for semi/structural applications, replacing synthetic and traditional components. Cellulose nanofiber–blended polylactic acid composites were prepared to enhance biodegradable polymers, which are expected to be a viable solution to the recent plastic waste crisis. The cellulose nanofibers were prepared by extracting cellulose fibers from bamboo using high-temperature and high-pressure steam and then disintegrating the fibers to the nanoscale. The optimum conditions for the processing pressure of the high-temperature and high-pressure steam treatments and the extraction process grinding time were investigated. Furthermore, the mixing ratio of cellulose nanofibers and polylactic acid for the fabrication of the composites was examined. The results show that the best condition was a 1:1 (50 wt% CNF) blend of cellulose nanofibers made with 15 atm of steam pressure for 5 min of steaming time followed by 10 s of milling time to make composites with polylactic acid that had 2.35 times the strength (77.5 MPa/g/cm3) of polylactic acid alone (33.3 MPa/g/cm3). This indicates that cellulose nanofibers produced from bamboo using high-temperature and high-pressure steam treatments can be used as reinforcing materials for low-strength biodegradable polymers. In this study, the integration of paper industry waste with high cellulose content into biocomposites of polylactic acid (PLA), a widely used biobased polymer material, was investigated. The PLA/waste biocomposite samples (0–25 wt.%) were manufactured using the extrusion and injection moulding techniques. The mechanical test results showed improvements in terms of tensile properties and a decrease in impact strength as the percentage of residue increased. The melting temperature decreased, and the crystallinity increased in all biocomposites according to the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis. Water absorption increased proportionally with the percentage of residue, attributed to the higher cellulose content in the biocomposites, determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) fracture analysis demonstrated effective reinforcement–matrix cohesion, supporting the previously observed behaviour of the analysed materials. Natural chitin/CaCO3 (ChCC) complex derived from crab shell was modified and used to fabricate an organic/inorganic complex filler to enhance the optical and mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposite. Crab shell was treated with NaOH to remove proteins and pulverized to produce ChCC microparticles having flake-like shape. The presence of CaCO3 in ChCC enhanced the hydrophobicity of the microparticles after treatment with fatty acids. The ChCC-filled PLA composite films prepared via melt extrusion displayed good optical properties without harsh discoloration (ΔE of 0.9%). In contrast, the film filled only with chitin showed high ΔE of 15% at same filler content, which is not commonly observed in biopolymer-filled biocomposites. Also, the ChCC-filled film exhibited higher mechanical properties, with an 8% increase in tensile strength compared to PLA, while the chitin-filled film showed a decreased tensile strength of 6% than PLA, which was attributed to the improved compatibility between the hydrophobic ChCC and the PLA matrix. This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties of polylactic acid by incorporating black tea waste as an economical and sustainable additive capable of being recycled. The black tea waste, after the hot water color removal process, is milled to a fine and uniform powder size. The combination of these particles with polylactic acid is carried out using a twin-screw extruder. Specimens of pure polylactic acid and biocomposites containing 3 and 5 wt% black tea waste are manufactured using a hot press machine at a temperature of 200 °C. The filaments are also successfully extruded for three-dimensional printing purposes. Scanning electron microscopy images reveal that in the polylactic acid–3% tea biocomposite, the tea particles are appropriately dispersed within the polylactic acid matrix. The tensile test results indicate that biocomposite polylactic acid-3% tea has the highest mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 67 MPa, demonstrating a 34% increase compared to polylactic acid. Furthermore, the biocomposite of polylactic acid–3% tea waste exhibits the best performance with a fracture energy of 2.5 kJ/m2 in the impact test. Hence, polylactic acid–3% tea biocomposite can be recommended as a suitable sustainable substitute. Finally, numerical simulations are performed on biocomposites containing double keyhole notches. This analysis is conducted to observe the behavior of biocomposite models with double keyhole notch under mixed-mode loading. The critical fracture load of the models is calculated using the strain energy density criterion. To enhance the adhesion at the interface between polylactic acid (PLA) and local luffa fibers (LFs), and improve the properties of these fully biodegradable biocomposites, 10% of maleic anhydride grafted Styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) is added to act concomitantly as compatibilizer and toughening agent. PLA/LF and PLA/SEBS‐g‐MA/LF biocomposite materials were manufactured by melt mixing and then characterized by torque assessment, Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Izod impact test. In accordance with SEM observation, FTIR analysis and torque measurements, the interfacial bonding coupling the PLA chains to LF via SEBS backbones resulted from the chemical reactions between the functional groups of the composites components. This contributed in increasing notably the impact resistance and the thermal stability compared with the biocomposites without SEBS‐g‐MA. The enhancement of the mechanical and thermal characteristics of 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) composites reinforced by coir fiber powder (CFP) has been investigated by varying the weight percentage (wt%) of the reinforcement and annealing process. CFP/PLA composite filaments with CFP compositions of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% were fabricated. These filaments were used to print CFP/PLA test specimens. The specimens were annealed at 90°C for 120 min in a hot air oven followed by cooling at room temperature. Mechanical, morphological, crystalline, and thermal characterizations were conducted on these specimens. The tensile and flexural strength of neat PLA were observed as 49.7 and 82.4 MPa which decreased by 6.4% and 8.13% respectively for printed composite specimens with 0.5 wt% CFP as reinforcement material. On the other hand, the annealed CFP/PLA composite specimen, with 0.1 wt% CFP as a reinforcement material, demonstrated higher tensile and flexural strength. Specifically, it exhibited a maximum tensile strength of 56.4 MPa and a maximum flexural strength of 92.9 MPa, which are 13.5% and 12.7% higher, respectively, than neat PLA. These strengths are 15.5% and 16.7% higher, respectively, than those of the unannealed CFP/PLA composite specimen with the same wt% of CFP reinforcement. The annealing process increased the crystallinity of composites by enhancing the crystallinity index (63%) and crystalline size (6.7 nm). The high thermal stability of composites (with a glass transition temperature of 256°C) makes them suitable for applications in food and medical packaging. The escalating significance of 3D printing in various industries is underscored by its ability to rapidly and cost-effectively produce distinctive parts. Among the 3D printing methods, fused filament fabrication (FFF) has emerged as a highly productive and cost-effective approach. While extensive efforts have been made to enhance the qualities of FFF products, challenges persist in material availability and quality compared to traditional methods. This study provides a meticulous overview of the FFF process, delving into various 3D printing processes, polymers, and polymer composites. Despite documented efforts to augment mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, material constraints remain a focal point. Our analysis extends to various PLA/biocomposites, shedding light on achieved improvements and potential applications. Looking forward, the future trend in FFF technology suggests a paradigm shift towards enhanced material diversity and performance. Plastic containers, commonly produced from non-biodegradable petroleum-based plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), raise significant environmental concerns due to their persistence. The disposal of agricultural waste, specifically rice straw (RS), through burning, further compounds these environmental issues. In response, this study explores the integration of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable material, with RS using a twin-screw extruder and injection process, resulting in the creation of a biodegradable packaging material. The inclusion of RS led to a decrease in the melt flow rate, thermal stability, and tensile strength, while concurrently enhancing the hydrophilic properties of the composite polymers. Additionally, the incorporation of maleic anhydride (MA) contributed to a reduction in the water absorption rate. The optimized formulation underwent migration testing and met the standards for food packaging products. Furthermore, no MA migration was detected from the composite. This approach not only provides a practical solution for the disposal of RS, but also serves as an environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional synthetic plastic waste. Polylactic-acid–starch-based polymer composite (PLA/TPS) has good thermal stability for biocomposites. However, the physical and mechanical properties of PLA/TPS do not meet the standards. It needed additives to enhance its physical and mechanical properties. The aim was to improve the physical and mechanical properties of PLA/thermoplastic starch using sucrose. In addition, this study evaluated the enhancement of thermal properties of PLA/thermoplastic starch using sucrose. This study used sucrose as an additive to enhance the PLA/TPS composite. The addition of sucrose inhibits the degradation of biocomposites. This means that thermal stability increases. The thermal stability increased because the degree of crystallinity increased with the addition of sucrose, which was also proven in the XRD result. The addition of sucrose caused the morphology of the biocomposite to have pores. The FESEM results showed that biocomposites with the addition of sucrose had pores and gaps. These gaps result from low adhesion between polymers, causing a decrease in the mechanical and physical properties of the sample. Based on the FTIR spectra, biocomposite PLA/TPS blends with the addition of sucrose still have many hydroxyl groups that will lead to attracting other molecules or ions, such as oxygen or water. Despite the promising potential of bio-composites derived from plant fibers due to their ecological and economic benefits, challenges persist in their preparation, restricting their commercial applications. These challenges are primarily associated with developing suitable methods, acquiring appropriate equipment for treating plant fibers, and addressing the time constraints in preparation. This study aims to contribute to the development and characterization of a new biocomposite and biodegradable material based on natural fibers produced through hot compression. The newly developed biocomposite comprises commercial biodegradable poly-lactic acid (PLA) as a matrix and untreated fiber fabric extracted from date palms as reinforcement. The use of untreated fiber fabric has successfully overcome the preparation difficulties. Experimental results on the new biocomposite reveal the strong adhesion between its fibers and the matrix, emphasizing the significant impact of choosing the right manufacturing conditions on the developed mechanical properties. The low carbon footprint, biodegradability, interesting mechanical properties, and relatively low price are considered some of the reasons for the increased interest in polylactic acid-based (PLA-based) filaments supplied with natural fillers. However, it is essential to recognize that incorporating natural fillers into virgin PLA significantly impacts the printability of the resulting blends. The complex inter-relationship between process, structure, and properties in the context of fused deposition modeling (FDM)-manufactured biocomposites is still not fully understood, which thus often results in decreased reliability of this technology in the context of biocomposites, decreased accuracy, and the increased presence of defects in the manufactured biocomposite samples. In light of these considerations, this study aims to identify the optimal processing parameters for the FDM manufacturing process involving wood-filled PLA biocomposites. This study presents an optimization approach consisting of Grey Relational Analysis in conjunction with the Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimization process has identified the combination of a scanning speed of 70 mm/s, a layer height of 0.1 mm, and a printing temperature of 220 °C as the most optimal, resulting in the highly satisfactory combination of good dimensional accuracy (Dx = 20.115 mm, Dy = 20.556 mm, and Dz = 20.220 mm) and low presence of voids (1.673%). The experimentally determined Grey Relational Grade of the specimen manufactured with the optimized set of process parameters (0.782) was in good agreement with the predicted value (0. 754), substantiating the validity of the optimization process. Additionally, the research compared the efficacy of optimization between the integrated multiparametric method and the conventional monoparametric strategy. The multiparametric method, which combines Grey Relational Analysis with the Taguchi orthogonal array, exhibited superior performance. Although the monoparametric optimization strategy yielded specimens with favorable values for the targeted properties, the analysis of the remaining characteristics uncovered unsatisfactory results. The main advantage of green composites is their biodegradability, but this biodegradability can also be considered a drawback if the degradation appears during the service life of the component. Therefore, the study of the mechanical behavior of green composites after hygrothermal aging tests is necessary to analyze their degradation process. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the hygrothermal aging behavior and aging mechanism of flax-fiber-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites. The fully biodegradable composites are manufactured by compression molding. In addition, the influence of atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment on the mechanical properties of the biocomposite is studied. Specimens are exposed to water vapor and 40 °C environmental conditions in a stove for up to 42 days. Several specimens of each type are taken out at regular intervals and tested to examine the water absorption, mechanical properties, and thermal characterization. Disposable surgical gowns are usually made from petroleum-based synthetic fibers that do not naturally decompose, impacting the environment. A promising approach to diminish the environmental impact of disposable gowns involves utilizing natural fibers and/or bio-based synthetic fibers. In this study, composite webs from polylactic acid (PLA) bicomponent fiber and natural fibers, cattail and kapok fibers, were prepared using the hot press method. Only the sheath region of the PLA bicomponent fiber melted, acting as an adhesive that enhanced the strength and reduced the thickness of the composite web compared with its state before hot pressing. The mechanical and physical properties of these composite webs were evaluated. Composite webs created from kapok fibers displayed a creamy yellowish-white color, while those made from cattail fibers showed a light yellowish-brown color. Additionally, the addition of natural fibers endowed the composite webs with hydrophobic properties. The maximum natural fiber content, at a ratio of 30:70 (natural fiber to PLA fiber), can be incorporated while maintaining proper water vapor permeability and mechanical properties. This article presents the development of laminate biocomposite via film stacking technique (FST) represents a method for processing fiber-reinforced thermoplastic laminate composites. The primary difficulty is the compatibility between the hydrophilic natural fibers and the hydrophobic PLA. With these limitations, the utilization of fiber content exceeding 50 wt% remains unfeasible. The PVA-based adhesives spraying technique is used to improve compatibility. Additionally, the effect of four different compatibilizer adhesives applied between the layers was examined: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), PVA modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (modified PVA), PVA–microfibrillated cellulose (PVA–MFC), and PVA-MFC modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (modified PVA–MFC). The findings of the study demonstrate that the natural fibers/PLA laminate biocomposite comprises 65 wt% fiber and 35 wt% PLA, thus achieving successful preparation of laminate biocomposites containing over 50 wt% fibers using the FST technique. In comparison to PVA, modified PVA elevated the flexural strength of the laminate biocomposite by up to 122 %. The modified PVA–MFC compatibilizer, when compared with modified PVA, enhanced impact strength by up to 148 %, reduced surface polarity by 31 %, and notably improved thermal stability. In a QUV accelerated weathering test, all the laminates exhibited reduced flexural modulus and flexural strength, but the flexural strength of all the tested materials remained above 50 MPa. In soil burial tests, the PVA laminate exhibited the most rapid decomposition, whereas the modified PVA–MFC laminate demonstrated a notably slower degradation rate. Accelerated weathering notably increased the decomposition of the materials in soil. This study aims to understand how ulexite, boric acid-borax mixtures (1:1), and zinc borate fillers affect the thermal and mechanical properties of the poly (lactic acid) (PLA). For this purpose, three different boron fillers were added to the PLA matrix at four different concentrations of 3 %, 5 %, 8 %, and 12% wt. UL-94 test was conducted to comprehend the impacts of boron fillers on the fire resistance of the biocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis was applied to determine the thermal stability, mass loss, and decomposition temperature of the samples. The biocomposite's significant mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, flexural strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break, were assessed using tensile and three-point bending tests.
