Introduction: Pregnancy and the postpartum period is a difficult time for women living with HIV (WLWH) and postpartum engagement with HIV care is often reduced, with implications for health and well-being. We aimed to explore the postpartum health experiences of WLWH in relation to engagement in HIV care. Methods: The NESTOR (iNvESTigating the pregnancy and pOst-paRtum health experience of women living with HIV) study was a UK based qualitative semi-structured interview study. 61 eligible women were identified. We used a purposive sampling technique to recruit women with differing levels of engagement in HIV care. Interviews were conducted via telephone or video call. Interviews were audio recorded and fully transcribed. We used a thematic approach for data analysis, and two researchers independently coded the data and established the key themes. Results: 11 of 61 (18%) eligible women participated in the interviews, and the three main themes were 'infant feeding decisions', 'managing the risk of mother to child transmission', and 'managing the knowledge of their HIV status'. These themes offer detailed insights into the significant psychological and emotional challenges these women had experienced, and the practical support from healthcare professionals in both HIV and maternity services that had enabled them to navigate those challenges. Discussion: There have been life-changing developments in the treatment and care for people living with HIV. However, even in the U = U (undetectable = untransmittable) era, traditional concerns about breastfeeding, risk of transmission to the infant and stigma continue to shape the postpartum experience of WLWH. As these impact on their emotional and psychological wellbeing, support in these areas needs to be prioritised. Significance: Studies report that postpartum retention in HIV care and viral load suppression are suboptimal for women living with HIV, where an important reason is the financial cost and access to healthcare. However, there is a relative scarcity of evidence describing the problems faced by women accessing HIV and maternity services within socialised healthcare systems, such as those in the UK. Women living with HIV face unanticipated challenges when becoming new mothers relating to disclosure of their HIV status, fears of vertical transmission and perceived perceptions of others deeming them inadequate mothers. Importantly, our analysis illustrates potential opportunities where intervention might mitigate the emotional and physical impact of these issues on their wellbeing throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Background: Paediatric critical care (PCC) is a high-pressure working environment. Staff experience high levels of burnout, symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and moral distress. Aim: To understand challenges to workplace well-being in PCC to help inform the development of staff interventions to improve and maintain well-being. Study Design: The Enhanced Critical Incident Technique (ECIT) was used. ECIT encompasses semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. We identified 'critical incidents', challenges to well-being, categorized them in a meaningful way, and identified factors which helped and hindered in those moments. Fifty-three nurses and doctors from a large UK quaternary PCC unit were consented to take part. Results: Themes generated are: Context of working in PCC, which examined staff's experiences of working in PCC generally and during COVID-19; Patient care and moral distress explored significant challenges to well-being faced by staff caring for increasingly complex and chronically ill patients; Teamwork and leadership demonstrated the importance of team-belonging and clear leadership; Changing workforce explored the impact of staffing shortages and the ageing workforce on well-being; and Satisfying basic human needs, which identified absences in basic requirements of food and rest. Conclusions: Staff's experiential accounts demonstrated a clear need for psychologically informed environments to enable the sharing of vulnerabilities, foster support, and maintain workplace well-being. Themes resonated with the self-determination theory and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which outline requirements for fulfilment (self-actualization). Relevance to Clinical Practice: Well-being interventions must be informed by psychological theory and evidence. Recommendations are flexible rostering, advanced communication training, psychologically-informed support, supervision/mentoring training, adequate accommodation and hot food. Objectives This study aimed to investigate perceptions of what it means to "age well" and to explore similarities and differences between a Western and non-Western culture (Britain and Java). Methods Qualitative interviews explored how Javanese and British older adults defined aging well, establishing the similarities and differences between cultures. Javanese (n  = 14) and British (n  = 15) adults aged 61–80 (mean age = 68) participated. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and organized with NVivo. Results Four themes were identified that captured what it means to age well across cultures: (a) good health is a springboard for aging well ; (b) holding a positive outlook is a decisive factor in aging well ; (c) "having enough" and "feeling safe" provide peace of mind ; and (d) spirituality and religiosity provide tranquility. Although both cultures mentioned similar factors, there were variations in the interpretations and emphasis within themes. For example, Javanese participants emphasized the importance of the social environment whereas British participants highlighted the physical environment. Discussion Differences between cultures are important for understanding how best to support people as they age. For example, in Java, aging well may be best supported by providing a vibrant social environment. For people in Britain, having a safe and secure physical environment may be more important. Purpose: Sociometric studies and adult reports have established that children with Language Disorder (LD) are at risk of peer relationship difficulties. However, we have limited knowledge of how children with LD understand friendship, whom they deem as a good or bad friend, and what role their friendship concepts play in their relationships with peers. This exploratory study aimed to conduct a qualitative investigation into the friendship concepts that children with LD hold and to explore their strategies for making friends. Methods: We conducted multiple, art‐informed interviews on the topic of friendship with 14 children with LD at the age of 6–8 years. Participating children were based in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. They attended enhanced provision, specific speech and language classes and mainstream classrooms. We used framework analysis to map children's responses to Selman's (1979) developmental model of interpersonal understanding, which espouses a theory of children's social development within the context of peer relationships. Results: The understanding of friendship formation in children with LD varied from physical presence to mutual support and sharing. Children's ideas about a good/bad friend represented the lowest developmental stage. Participants from the mainstream classroom demonstrated the highest stages of interpersonal understanding. Children with LD did not mention their language abilities as a barrier to making friends. Conclusion: There are limited studies exploring friendship directly from children with LD, and this study provides insights into this gap, by utilising art‐informed interviews. Children's immature understanding of a good/bad friend points towards a potential susceptibility to false friends, which we suggest needs further empirical validation. We also found that children with LD did not pay attention to their language difficulties when making friends, which raises questions about the ways diagnoses are shared with children. Humanitarian organizations in Bangladesh introduced emergency services to protect Rohingya refugees from COVID-19. This article aims to explore the roles front-line leaders from those organizations played in reducing the spread of the infection and protecting the refugees. By using in-depth interviews with 42 first-line managers (FLMs), it explores the innovative actions and strategies adopted by these managers to implement COVID-19-related programs and services. Initiatives such as training and engaging Rohingya volunteers and developing services promptly in order to raise awareness and manage testing, treatment, and psychosocial interventions contributed significantly to pandemic management in Rohingya refugee camps. Humanitarian groups must realize the crucial role first-line managers (FLMs) play in managing their staff while providing high-quality services in times of crisis. FLMs must be both leaders and managers in order to deal with a pandemic, in which uncertainty and a lack of knowledge create a complicated and demanding environment. Both functions are critical to providing quality services when resources are limited and only a few workers are available. The FLMs focused on mass-level awareness programs with active community engagement and participation, counseling for behavioral change, the provision of information in order to address socio-cultural barriers to community engagement, better utilization of agency services and resources, and pandemic management so as to reduce the spread and the rate of infection of COVID-19 among Rohingya refugees. Senior and middle management commitment was required to help FLMs manage a pandemic, even in the face of uncertainty, unpredictability, ambiguity, and a lack of information about the virus and its cure. They must serve as role models. FLMs should be empowered to fulfill their leadership roles through the better use of community strengths and resources during pandemics or other crises by strengthening local leadership skills, community capabilities, and an overall sense of communal responsibility. Background: The UK National Health Service (NHS) is one of the largest employers in the world and employs around 360,000 registered nurses. Following a protracted pay dispute in December 2022 NHS nurses engaged in industrial action resulting in the largest nurse strikes in the 74-year history of the NHS. Initially it appeared these strikes were a direct consequence of pay disputes but evidence suggests that the situation was more complex. This study aimed to explore what the key factors were in driving UK NHS nurses' decision to strike. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. The study was conducted throughout the UK and involved participants who were nurses working for the NHS who voted in favour of strike action. Data collection involved the use of an online survey completed by 468 nurses and 13 semi-structured interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for quantitative data analysis and a process of inductive thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The quantitative and qualitative data were analysed separately and then integrated to generate mixed methods inferences. Results: The quantitative findings showed that patient safety, followed by staff shortages, pay, and unmanageable work demands were the most important factors encouraging nurses' decision to strike. The qualitative findings served to further the understanding of these factors particularly in relation to participants' perception of the NHS and the consequences of inadequate pay and staff shortages. Three overarching and overlapping themes represented the qualitative findings: Save our NHS, Money talks, and It's untenable. Integration of the findings showed a high level of concordance between the two data sets and suggest that the factors involved are interconnected and inextricably linked. Conclusions: The UK NHS is a challenging and demanding work environment in which the well-being of its patients is dependent on the well-being of those who care for them. Concerns relating to patient welfare, the nursing profession and the NHS played a large part in driving UK NHS nurses' decision to strike. Women with Tourette's syndrome (TS) continue to be under-researched, despite female sex being associated with increased tic-related impairment in adulthood. Existing literature indicates that individuals with TS are more likely than the general population to report self-stigma, but little is known about the subjective identities of women with TS and how this relates to psychological wellbeing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with a purposive sample of 11 females. All were diagnosed with TS and aged 18–28. Data was transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis applied. Five themes were established: "I'm not normal", "I just want to be me", I'm a "people pleaser", seeing oneself as an "outsider", and "it's just part of me...it's not going anywhere". Difficulties with self-acceptance and the autonomy to be one's true self were noted and appeared to be intensified by stereotypical gender roles and attempts to conceal tics. Findings also suggested that personal growth and feelings of mastery can be achieved through embracing TS as part of one's identity, or recognising it as just one aspect of the self. Psychological support focused on accepting and living with tics rather than reducing them may benefit this population and is currently difficult to access. Aim: To generate, test and refine programme theories that emerged from a rapid realist review investigating practising UK Nurses' and Midwives' experiences of effective leadership strategies during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Background: The realist review of literature generated six tentative theories of healthful leadership practices reflecting, working with people's beliefs and values; being facilitative; multiple means of communication and; practical support. The review yielded little insight into the actual impact of the leadership approaches advocated. Methods: A realist study, informed by person‐centredness using mixed‐methods. Online survey (n = 328) and semi‐structured interviews (n = 14) of nurses and midwives across the UK in different career positions/specialities. Quantitative data analysed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. Framework analysis for qualitative data using context (C), mechanism (M), outcome (O) configurations of the tentative theories. Results: Three refined theories were identified concerning: Visibility and availability; embodying values and; knowing self. Healthful leadership practices are only achievable within organisational cultures that privilege well‐being. Conclusions: Leaders should intentionally adopt practices that promote well‐being. 'Knowing self' as a leader, coaching and mentoring practice development is important for leadership development. Implications for Clinical Practice: Nurses who feel valued, heard, cared for and safe are more likely to remain in clinical practice. Job satisfaction and being motivated to practice with confidence and competence will impact positively on patient outcomes. Impact: The study addresses the role of leadership in developing healthful workplace cultures. The main findings were six leadership practices that promote healthful cultures. The research will have an impact on strategic and clinical leaders, nurses and midwives. This study explored how partners/spouses of people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) experienced intimacy, sexual function, and sexual satisfaction post-SCI. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the partners/spouses of people with SCI living in the community in the United Kingdom. Twelve participants (7 females; 5 males) were recruited using purposive sampling. A nine-item semi-structured interview design was used. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed via Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Three superordinate themes were demonstrated: (1) Stolen sex through unpreparedness; (2) Redefining sex; and (3) Compromised commitment. Partners struggled to come to terms with the shock of radically altered post-SCI sexual relationships, questioning how their changed sexual relationship and sexual identity conflicted with caring requirements. To minimise post-SCI relationship changes, some partners engaged in strategies to protect against, distract from and avoid sexual intimacy, whereas others were able to retain adapted pre-injury patterns of intimate behaviour. Compromised sexual function and satisfaction significantly disrupt relationship dynamics post-SCI, initiate voluntary celibacy, and limit the perceived viability of continued sexual intimacy. Specialist partner-support provisions are urgently needed, recognising that partner support needs are not restricted to the inpatient rehabilitation phase but importantly extend long past discharge into the community. Sexual function and satisfaction are highly challenging areas for partners post-spinal cord injury (SCI). Support and education for the partner must be incorporated into SCI rehabilitation to help with both adjustment and acceptance to changes in sexual functioning post-SCI. Partner contributions to and experiences of sexual function and satisfaction should be given more value, as these aid in the sustainability of healthy sexual relationships and psychological wellbeing following SCI. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has had both a psychological and physiological effect on the human race. For those working in health care, particularly in critical care, the pandemic has put unprecedented strain on staff. Witnessing suffering during crisis in an organizational setting can be a traumatic experience and critical care nurses often risked, not only their own lives, but their psychological well‐being, so that those infected with the virus might have a better chance at survival. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the challenges to mental health and psychological well‐being experienced by Critical Care Nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Study Design: A longitudinal, qualitative study involving semi‐structured interviews with 54 critical care nurses across 38 hospitals in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Four key themes were identified which represent the challenges faces by critical care nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic: Lack of control, Psychological trauma, Unexpected leadership, Public‐political betrayal. Conclusions: While public‐political praise may lead to a short‐term lift in morale for front line workers; where it is not accompanied by practical support in terms of appropriate equipment, leadership, emotional support and renumeration it is likely to be damaging in the longer term. Relevance to Clinical Practice: This study has provided a greater understanding of the factors which affected the well‐being and mental health of critical care nurses during a global pandemic. Aims and Objectives: To explore the experiences of nursing students in England who had worked through the first wave and transitioned to qualification in the ongoing pandemic. Background: Experiences of health professionals and student nurses during the pandemic are now well documented, but the transition of students to qualification is less well understood. In Summer 2020, we interviewed 16 student nurses who had worked as health care assistants on paid extended placements as part of the COVID‐19 response in the East of England, finding surprisingly positive experiences, including perceived heightened preparedness for qualification. A year later, we re‐interviewed 12 participants from the original study to hear about transitioning to qualification during the ongoing pandemic. This study provides novel insights into their experiences. Design: A qualitative study design was used. Methods: Twelve newly qualified nurses who had participated in the original study took part in qualitative, online interviews where they shared their experiences of working and transitioning to qualification during the ongoing pandemic since we spoke to them a year earlier. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. COREQ guidelines were used in developing and reporting this study. Results: Three themes were identified. Constant change: in the clinical environment and arising out of the transition to newly qualified nurse, mental health and well‐being and reflecting on the past to learn for the future. Conclusions: Participants experienced a unique transition to qualification. The perceived heightened preparedness for qualification that participants who had worked as students during the first wave of the pandemic had become a reality, ameliorating some of the known effects of transition. However, increased expectations and added responsibilities in extremely busy, fluctuating clinical environments with minimal support add weight to calls for mandatory preceptorship programmes. While heightened resilience was evident, provision of ongoing mental health and well‐being support is strongly recommended. Relevance to Clinical Practice: We need a partnership approach with nurse educators and practice colleagues which ensures preparation for qualified practice is appropriate. If we do not effectively prepare students for qualified nurse posts, patient care will almost certainly be compromised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
