Conference proceedings are valuable sources for research, providing insights into individual or organisational projects. Australian library and information services (LIS) professionals have the opportunity to contribute to a robust conference culture, including the biennial library technology VALA conference. Practice-driven conferences can offer interpretations of LIS practitioner experiences, however, there is limited research focusing on Australian LIS conference proceedings. The VALA conference papers offer a unique record of technology's impact, influence, and implementation in Australian LIS organisations over the last forty years. This article will outline the objective and methodology of an ongoing research project undertaking historical analysis of VALA conference papers. The research project seeks to examine key themes, theories, and tools discussed in VALA conference papers and will attempt to identify if evolving technology influences the practices and attitudes of Australian LIS practitioners. The article will identify the research methods and the content analysis techniques that will be used in the project, and present preliminary results from a pilot study presented at the 2023 RAILS conference. Background: Addressing wellbeing at the community level, using a public health approach may build wellbeing and protective factors for all. A collaborative, community-owned approach can bring together experience, networks, local knowledge, and other resources to form a locally-driven, place-based initiative that can address complex issues effectively. Research on community empowerment, coalition functioning, health interventions and the use of local data provide evidence about what can be achieved in communities. There is less understanding about how communities can collaborate to bring about change, especially for mental health and wellbeing. Method: A comprehensive literature search was undertaken to identify community wellbeing initiatives that address mental health. After screening 8,972 titles, 745 abstracts and 188 full-texts, 12 exemplar initiatives were identified (39 related papers). Results: Eight key principles allowed these initiatives to become established and operate successfully. These principles related to implementation and outcome lessons that allowed these initiatives to contribute to the goal of increasing community mental health and wellbeing. A framework for community wellbeing initiatives addressing principles, development, implementation and sustainability was derived from this analysis, with processes mapped therein. Conclusion: This framework provides evidence for communities seeking to address community wellbeing and avoid the pitfalls experienced by many well-meaning but short-lived initiatives. The increasing use of information and communication technology (ICT) by Cameroonians has brought changes in citizen's needs and demands and has raised expectations on how services should be provided. Citizens need to carry out transactions (transactional services) conveniently and obtain accessible, reliable, and sustainable information (information services) from their local government. Unfortunately, this is still far from the reality in some selected local councils in Cameroon, given that they use ICT mainly for administrative and not service delivery purposes. Therefore, this paper's main objective is to establish a link between ICT usage and the empowerment of local councils in the application of e-governance strategies for information and transaction services delivery. The theoretical framework used in the paper included Technology Acceptance, Wider Dissemination, and e-governance Models. The stratified purposive and systematic random sampling techniques were employed to obtain needed data from the Bamenda I, II, and III municipalities in the North West Region. The findings of this paper revealed that a significant number of local councils are already using their ICTs to provide information services. However, none of them so far are using ICT for transactional service delivery purposes. Also, we observed a gap between citizen expectations and local council provision of information and transactional services. This paper found that the use of ICT to apply e-governance strategies would improve local council service delivery in terms of accessibility to information by citizens and sustainability of council information services, also promote transparency in transactions between the council and the citizens, and ease transactions between citizens and local councils in terms of time and cost. Thus, this paper recommends that local councils digitalize manual service delivery processes through their operational IT units. Also, for the Cameroon government to achieve the goals stated in the NDS30 Plan for a Digital Cameroon, it must consider effectively involving local councils in the national digitalization initiatives. The multi-level modeling technology of Building Information Modeling (BIM), combined with Three-dimensional Geographic Information System (3DGIS) macro-scene visualization technology and location information, can realize the transmission of decentralized information from various disciplines to multi-disciplinary collaborative information sharing services. It can be applied independently for the whole life cycle, which plays a positive role in reducing the cost and improving the efficiency of engineering planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. In this paper, the data integration and function integration methods of 3DGIS and BIM are designed. In order to avoid the breaking problems caused by attribute information loss and excessive simplification in the process of BIM data integration, the attribute mapping between 3DGIS and BIM based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) and City Geography Markup Language (CityGML) and the data simplification method considering the geometric characteristics of BIM are designed. By setting the relevant preconditions and thresholds of patch merging, on the premise of maintaining the structural characteristics of BIM data surface, reduce the amount of model data to improve the efficiency of BIM data loading, rendering and display effect in 3D geospatial scene. Through the data and function integration of 3DGIS and BIM, we can effectively manage the data of large-scale model, and calculate and obtain the geospatial location and direction of key parts of buildings through the coordinate transformation of BIM, which can effectively assist the rapid and accurate positioning of BIM in virtual 3D scene and expand the visualization ability of 3DGIS. By effectively integrating 3DGIS and BIM, this paper gives full play to the spatial management advantages of 3DGIS and the component management advantages of BIM. Goal: This paper aims to identify the dimensions that impact the perception of the quality of Brazilian air services in the eyes of customers, using a questionnaire based on the SERVPERF model adapted for the service studied as a data collection instrument. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research used a quantitative approach, in which 810 questionnaires were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling methodology. Results: The results showed that the relationship between quality perceived by clients and the dimensions of quality Tangibles and Empathy were those confirmed by Structural Equation Modeling in this research. The fact that the study is exploratory, and temporal indicates that in this period, Brazilian consumers attach more importance to the environment and appearance of aircraft, equipment, and employees of the companies and that their needs are met in a personalized way. Limitations of the investigation: Only Tangibles and Empathy dimensions were confirmed. Practical implications: With the feedback of the customer, including the constant need for an accuracy of the assumptions and hypotheses studied in this paper, an airline can identify what the real needs of its customer must be met and, in its strategic planning, identify the possible actions to be implemented, such as the priority of the investments, and, thus, to be able to increase the competitive advantage, offering the clients what they prioritize. This paper discusses the upgraded data assimilation (DA) wave forecasting system at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). Significant wave height (SWH) observations from deep and shallow water buoys in the North Indian Ocean are incorporated into the assimilation system in conjunction with satellite observations from SARAL/AltiKa, Jason-3, Sentinel-3a, and Sentinel-3b. In deep water, satellite DA improved the SWH forecast by ~16%, and the inclusion of buoy observations enhanced it up to ~43% in the initial forecast hours. The impact of satellite DA persists throughout the forecast period of 5 days for swell height, with 11–27% improvement. Ingestion of buoy observations further improved it up to ~31.5% at the 3rd hr forecast. For the wind–sea height, buoy DA resulted in an improvement of 9–26% during the initial 12 hr. In general, the positive impact of buoy DA only lasts till the 30th hr forecast. In shallow water, the impact of satellite DA on SWH prediction is moderate, with positive improvements of 4–7.5%. Adding buoy observations significantly improved it to 10–40% in the initial 12 hr, especially for the low wave heights. Although the buoy DA improved the prediction of wave periods compared to the non-assimilated model, it tends to degrade the forecast compared to the model with satellite DA alone. This points to the limitation of the current assimilation approach in correcting the wave energy distribution in the background spectrum, particularly at higher frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many people living with dementia and unpaid carers experience inequalities in care related to challenges in receiving a correct diagnosis, care and support. Whilst complexities of the evidence are well recognised including barriers in receiving a diagnosis or post-diagnostic care, no coherent model has captured the far-reaching types and levels of inequalities to date. Building on the established Dahlgren & Whitehead Rainbow model of health determinants, this paper introduces the new Dementia Inequalities model. The Dementia Inequalities model, similar to the original general rainbow model, categorises determinants of health and well-being in dementia into three layers: (1) Individual; (2) Social and community networks; and (3) Society and infrastructure. Each layer comprises of general determinants, which have been identified in the original model but also may be different in dementia, such as age (specifically referring to young- versus late-onset dementia) and ethnicity, as well as new dementia-specific determinants, such as rare dementia subtype, having an unpaid carer, and knowledge about dementia in the health and social care workforce. Each layer and its individual determinants are discussed referring to existing research and evidence syntheses in the field, arguing for the need of this new model. A total of 48 people with lived, caring, and professional experiences of dementia have been consulted in the process of the development of this model. The Dementia Inequalities model provides a coherent, evidence-based overview of inequalities in dementia diagnosis and care and can be used in health and social care, as well as in commissioning of care services, to support people living with dementia and their unpaid carers better and try and create more equity in diagnosis and care. This paper introduces the concept of brokerage to the scholarship of local news. Drawing on anthropological conceptions of actors that bridge gaps in social structure and help information flow across such gaps, we propose that local journalists act as cultural brokers in rural towns. Building upon Gould and Fernandez (1989, "Structures of Mediation: A Formal Approach to Brokerage in Transaction Networks." Sociological Methodology 19:89. ), we employ a typology of five brokerage functions to classify relationships between local journalists, their sources, and their audiences. In addition to coordinating, itinerant, representative, liaison, and gatekeeping brokerage, our analysis reveals a novel type of brokerage: relay brokerage. We argue that this typology is useful to conceptualize information relationships in rural communities and to understand how information flows change when local journalism ebbs. Empirically, the paper presents a comprehensive study of staffing at rural newspapers in Alberta, Canada, revealing that local media are stretched so thin in many geographic areas, there is little left to cut. This paper investigates the intricate connection between visual perception and the mathematical modeling of neural activity in the primary visual cortex (V1). The focus is on modeling the visual MacKay effect [D. M. MacKay, Nature, 180 (1957), pp. 849--850]. While bifurcation theory has been a prominent mathematical approach for addressing issues in neuroscience, especially in describing spontaneous pattern formations in V1 due to parameter changes, it faces challenges in scenarios with localized sensory inputs. This is evident, for instance, in MacKay's psychophysical experiments, where the redundancy of visual stimuli information results in irregular shapes, making bifurcation theory and multiscale analysis less effective. To address this, we follow a mathematical viewpoint based on the input-output controllability of an Amari-type neural fields model. In this framework, we consider sensory input as a control function, a cortical representation via the retino-cortical map of the visual stimulus that captures its distinct features. This includes highly localized information in the center of MacKay's funnel pattern "MacKay rays." From a control theory point of view, the Amari-type equation's exact controllability property is discussed for linear and nonlinear response functions. For the visual MacKay effect modeling, we adjust the parameter representing intra-neuron connectivity to ensure that cortical activity exponentially stabilizes to the stationary state in the absence of sensory input. Then, we perform quantitative and qualitative studies to demonstrate that they capture all the essential features of the induced after-image reported by MacKay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-scale wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play a critical role in monitoring dangerous scenarios and responding to medical emergencies. However, the inherent instability and error-prone nature of wireless links present significant challenges, necessitating efficient data collection and reliable transmission services. This paper addresses the limitations of existing data transmission and recovery protocols by proposing a systematic end-to-end design tailored for medical event-driven cluster-based large-scale WSNs. The primary goal is to enhance the reliability of data collection and transmission services, ensuring a comprehensive and practical approach. Our approach focuses on refining the hop-count-based routing scheme to achieve fairness in forwarding reliability. Additionally, it emphasizes reliable data collection within clusters and establishes robust data transmission over multiple hops. These systematic improvements are designed to optimize the overall performance of the WSN in real-world scenarios. Simulation results of the proposed protocol validate its exceptional performance compared to other prominent data transmission schemes. The evaluation spans varying sensor densities, wireless channel conditions, and packet transmission rates, showcasing the protocol's superiority in ensuring reliable and efficient data transfer. Our systematic end-to-end design successfully addresses the challenges posed by the instability of wireless links in large-scaleWSNs. The recognition of data matrix (DM) codes plays a crucial role in industrial production. Significant progress has been made with existing methods. However, for low-quality images with protrusions and interruptions on the L-shaped solid edge (finder pattern) and the dashed edge (timing pattern) of DM codes in industrial production environments, the recognition accuracy rate of existing methods sharply declines due to a lack of consideration for these interference issues. Therefore, ensuring recognition accuracy in the presence of these interference issues is a highly challenging task. To address such interference issues, unlike most existing methods focused on locating the L-shaped solid edge for DM code recognition, we in this paper propose a novel DM code recognition method based on locating the L-shaped dashed edge by incorporating the prior information of the center of the DM code. Specifically, we first use a deep learning-based object detection method to obtain the center of the DM code. Next, to enhance the accuracy of L-shaped dashed edge localization, we design a two-level screening strategy that combines the general constraints and central constraints. The central constraints fully exploit the prior information of the center of the DM code. Finally, we employ libdmtx to decode the content from the precise position image of the DM code. The image is generated by using the L-shaped dashed edge. Experimental results on various types of DM code datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods in terms of recognition accuracy rate and time consumption, thus holding significant practical value in an industrial production environment. The importance and urgency of IPLE (intellectual property literacy education) are increasingly prominent. This paper aims to build an IPLE mode to provide support for the talent cultivation in university libraries facing opportunities and challenges in the service transformation period. The IPLE mode and content of the Regional Patent Information Centers (PIZ Regional Centers) in German universities and university libraries are studied through network research, literature research, and comparative analysis. Based on the practical experience, educational characteristics and advantages, this paper constructs an IPLE mode of university library that includes six modules. Building the IPLE mode of university libraries can provide reference for university libraries in the work of IPLE, and gradually form an IPLE system that meets the needs of users' training, conforms to the university's talent training objectives, and improves the development plan of the university libraries. Smart grids integrate information technology, decision support systems, communication networks, and sensing technologies. All these components cooperate to facilitate dynamic power adjustments based on received client consumption reports. Although this brings forth energy efficiency, the transmission of sensitive data over the public internet exposes these networks to numerous attacks. To this end, numerous security solutions have been presented recently. Most of these techniques deploy conventional cryptographic systems such as public key infrastructure, blockchains, and physically unclonable functions that have either performance or security issues. In this paper, a fairly efficient authentication scheme is developed and analyzed. Its formal security analysis is carried out using the Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic, which shows that the session key negotiated is provably secure. We also execute a semantic security analysis of this protocol to demonstrate that it can resist typical smart grid attacks such as privileged insider, guessing, eavesdropping, and ephemeral secret leakages. Aim. The paper considers the Forum of the Zagreb Library Association (ZLA forum) as one of the noformal forms of professional training initiated by the Zagreb Library Association through which librarians nad LIS students can develop their competencies, including those necessary for the work in the information service whereby internal annual reports on the ZLA forum were used. Approach/methodology. The paper analyzes the motivation for the creation, development and implementation of the ZLA forum program, and presents the most signifi - cant statistics on its attendance. Results. The result of the paper is an overview of the topics of the ZLA forum that can meet the need for constant professional development of librarians in general, including librarians in the information service. Originality/Value. The paper describes the ZLA forum as an informal education initiated by the Zagreb Library Association. The topics of the ZLA forum are different, but they have in common that they provide the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge as well as to motivate other regional associations towards similar activities. Objective. The aim of the paper is, based on a survey conducted among users, to present how the Central Department of Science, Non-fi ction and Periodicals of Rijeka City Library solves complex information request from users and to gain an insight into user satisfaction with the provided service. Methodology. A pilot survey on user satisfaction with the services of complex information searches was conducted by using a survey method. An online survey questionnaire via Google form was used for data collection and conducted from September 19th and October 17th, 2022. The survey was answered by 60% of respondents, exactly fi fty-two of them. Results. The research results indicate that users are satisfi ed with the service of complex information searches in Rijeka City Library. They also emphasised diff erent expectations among diff erent types of users of a public library regarding the purpose of information searches and the need for individual approach to each user. There is also a noticeable change in users' knowledge of information sources and the need for continuous professional development of librarians in the fi eld. Social utility. The method of working on complex information searches in public libraries is not standardized, making this paper an indicator of the specifi city of operational methods of the Rijeka City Library. The paper can serve as a guideline for other public libraries on how to conduct complex information searches but it can also serve as a corrective measure for local improvement. Purpose. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of strengthening librarians' competencies in working with older adults, using the example of the „65 plus" project by the Zagreb City Libraries. Methodology. The research was conducted among librarians participating in the „65 plus" project from October 25th to November 5th, 2022, using a survey method and an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 28 open and closed-type questions and was completed by 38 respondents, representing 69 % of the target group. The research examined librarians' attitudes towards the necessary competencies for working with older adults, self-assessment of their competencies and sensitivity to the needs of older adults in general, the importance of lifelong learning and ways to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to work with this user group. Results. The research results show that the respondents consider themselves competent to work with older adults and believe that continuous education is necessary for providing quality service and development of new programmes, indicating that they are personally and professionally motivated to participate in the project. The most important general competencies necessary for working with older adults highlighted by the respondents are ethics, communication skills and the ability to adapt to new situations. The most important professional competencies are eff ectively providing information to meet user needs, the ability to teach users and the ability to provide and develop (new) services for users. The research results can help other public libraries in designing programmes, developing the competencies of their employees working in the reference and information service and improving services for older adults....Originality/Value. Objective. The aim of this paper is to highlight the attitudes and motivation of librarians to work in reference and information services, as well as the causes of their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with this specifi c work in an important user service. Approach/Methodology. The research was conducted in two large libraries, the National and University Library in Zagreb and the City Library of Zagreb. Both libraries have librarians who perform specialized tasks and dedicated organizational unit dealing with reference and information service work. These libraries diff er in their tasks and users, as well as in their functional, organizational and other characteristics. The research involved current and former librarians who performed or still perform reference and information service tasks. About twenty (20) librarians from each library participated in the research and the survey method was used. Results. The paper provides an overview of research results on the reasons for working in the reference and information service, as well as leaving that job, and the attitudes towards this work. The results indicate divided opinions among librarians regarding work in the information service, particularly between those who left voluntarily and those who chose to stay. These attitudes diff er in their views on the professional value of the work in the reference and information service and the work engagement of librarians in it. Most respondents agree that this job should be performed by competent individuals with high professional qualifi cations, although more simple user inquiries can be handled by less qualifi ed individuals trained to work with users. Additionally, some respondents who left believe that the job does not involve much work, while the majority of those still working consider it to be a job that requires a lot of work. Practical implications. The research results enable library managers to gain insight into the motivation of librarians working in the reference and information service. The paper contributes to a better understanding of the reasons behind those who want to leave this type of work and those who want to continue working in it.....Originality/Value. Objective. The goal of this paper is to gain a deeper insight into the phenomenon of providing assistance to students in the information seeking process from the perspective of students as library users who turn to librarians for help when performing tasks related to their coursework. Approach/Methodology. The paper presents the results of research conducted using the method of semi-structured interviews with twenty undergraduate and graduate students from fi ve Croatian universities. The focus is on the phenomenon of assistance in information seeking observed from a students' perspective, primarily using phenomenography as the research approach. Research also emphasises students' perspective on the importance of the information seeking process, their expectations of librarian assistance and diffi culties they encounter during the process. Authors use the results to create a context important for understanding the phenomenon. Results. The research results show that students recognize the importance of the information seeking process and believe that it helps them acquire new knowledge and skills. They expect a wide range of assistance from librarians - from help related to sources (referring to sources and relevant works) to help related to the information seeking process itself (teaching and advising). Students experience the help of librarians as: (1) support in seeking, (2) discovery of (useful) works, (3) "instant" help in seeking and (4) facilitation of seeking. The paper, after reviewing theoretical foundations, presents the obtained categories of student perceptions and experiences. Practical implications. Presented results can help librarians to understand and provide assistance to students in the information seeking process, as well as in planning the development of information services in university and other higher education libraries.....Originality/Value. This research provides insight into students' perceptions and expectations of librarian assistance in the information seeking process and how they experience such assistance, which has not yet been conducted in the context of Croatian higher education and university libraries. This research explains the use of the oral history collection of the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) to optimize historical information as a primary source. Sources of information with this primary category relate to information from historical actors or eyewitnesses and witnesses to an event. Oral history archives are the main content of this research. The method used is descriptive qualitative, focusing on observing the content of oral history information published on websites and various social media platforms affiliated with ANRI. This research aims to analyze the oral history collection owned by ANRI and the historical information content contained in the collection. The results of this paper describe the content of oral history, which has primary information specifications based on the information needs in the archives. This information is helpful to complement information originating from textual sources. Background: The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research to improve people's health and wellbeing. To achieve this aim, effective knowledge sharing (two-way knowledge sharing between researchers and stakeholders to create new knowledge and enable change in policy and practice) is needed. To date, it is not known which knowledge sharing techniques and approaches are used or how effective these are in creating new knowledge that can lead to changes in policy and practice in NIHR funded studies. Methods: In this restricted systematic review, electronic databases [MEDLINE, The Health Management Information Consortium (including the Department of Health's Library and Information Services and King's Fund Information and Library Services)] were searched for published NIHR funded studies that described knowledge sharing between researchers and other stakeholders. One researcher performed title and abstract, full paper screening and quality assessment (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative checklist) with a 20% sample independently screened by a second reviewer. A narrative synthesis was adopted. Results: In total 9897 records were identified. After screening, 17 studies were included. Five explicit forms of knowledge sharing studies were identified: embedded models, knowledge brokering, stakeholder engagement and involvement of non-researchers in the research or service design process and organisational collaborative partnerships between universities and healthcare organisations. Collectively, the techniques and approaches included five types of stakeholders and worked with them at all stages of the research cycle, except the stage of formation of the research design and preparation of funding application. Seven studies (using four of the approaches) gave examples of new knowledge creation, but only one study (using an embedded model approach) gave an example of a resulting change in practice. The use of a theory, model or framework to explain the knowledge sharing process was identified in six studies. Conclusions: Five knowledge sharing techniques and approaches were reported in the included NIHR funded studies, and seven studies identified the creation of new knowledge. The force driving the implementation of Linked Data (LD) technologies in libraries is the aspiration for widespread interoperability of library data and for advanced information services. Toward these goals, libraries change their data models, update their communication formats, and develop prototype applications that use new models and formats and enable entity-based cataloguing. The National Library of Greece (NLG) has been actively adapting its policies, workflows, and tools to make its data LD-ready. Within this context, NLG has developed -in cooperation with Open Knowledge Greece- an entity management prototype using RDA/RDF in a Wikibase instance. The vision is to build a shared entity management system used by all memory institutions in Greece to describe entities of Greek interest. Data is to be stored as a knowledge graph that can be exported in RDF serializations, and in legacy MARC format. This paper first examines related efforts from other National Libraries, and then outlines the steps involved in the publication of the NLG Authority File as linked data; namely dataset selection, modeling, data curation, mapping, and publication. The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of millions of devices deployed over hundreds of thousands of different networks, providing an ever-expanding resource to improve our understanding of and interactions with the physical world. Global service discovery is key to realizing the opportunities of the IoT, spanning disparate networks and technologies to enable the sharing, discovery, and utilisation of services and data outside of the context in which they are deployed. In this paper, we present Decentralised Service Registries (DSRs), a novel trustworthy decentralised approach to global IoT service discovery and interaction, building on DSF-IoT to allow users to simply create and share public and private service registries, to register and query for relevant services, and to access both current and historical data published by the services they discover. In DSR, services are registered and discovered using signed objects that are cryptographically associated with the registry service, linked into a signature chain, and stored and queried for using a novel verifiable DHT overlay. In contrast to existing centralised and decentralised approaches, DSRs decouple registries from supporting infrastructure, provide privacy and multi-tenancy, and support the verification of registry entries and history, service information, and published data to mitigate risks of service impersonation or the alteration of data. This decentralised approach is demonstrated through the creation and use of a DSR to register and search for real-world IoT devices and their data as well as qualified using a scalable cluster-based testbench for the high-fidelity emulation of peer-to-peer applications. DSRs are evaluated against existing approaches, demonstrating the novelty and utility of DSR to address key IoT challenges and enable the sharing, discovery, and use of IoT services. Geographic grid coding is a very important and basic work in efficiently managing, analyzing and querying massive geospatial location data and providing information services. GeoHash, Google S2 and Uber H3 are three commonly used geographic grid coding methods in commercial applications. This paper starts from the basic concepts of geographic coding and its evolution process, and introduces the geographic grids involved in the current geographic coding and the current geographic grid coding methods, then explains the three geographic grid coding methods from the aspects of algorithm overview, coding mode, coding level and its corresponding spatial scope, and finally conducts a comparative analysis from the aspects of ortho-polyhedral selection, dissecting units, filling curves, coding level, neighbor query and neighbor distance type, and the advantages and disadvantages of algorithm application, so as to explore the application value and prospect of the three methods in depth, which can provide a reference for the research and application based on the geographic location of large-scale data. This paper delves into the complexities and theoretical underpinnings of knowledge organization systems (KOS), focusing on domain analysis and facet analysis as methodologies, such as improving the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The study repeats a former critique of the LCSH and argues for the incorporation of facet and domain analysis to enhance its utility and academic rigor. Facet analysis, although well-established, is critiqued for its rationalist philosophy and lack of empirical grounding. Domain analysis is presented as a complementary approach that addresses these gaps by considering empirical, historical, philosophical, and pragmatic issues. To any given system, the paper emphasizes that KO systems are not neutral; they reflect underlying theoretical paradigms that must be understood for effective classification. The study concludes by advocating for interdisciplinary research and broader cooperation among knowledge organization professionals, philosophers, and subject specialists to develop more robust and academically rigorous KOS. Purpose: This paper evaluates the precision of four metasearch engines (MSEs) – DuckDuckGo, Dogpile, Metacrawler and Startpage, to determine which metasearch engine exhibits the highest level of precision and to identify the metasearch engine that is most likely to return the most relevant search results. Design/methodology/approach: The research is divided into two parts: the first phase involves four queries categorized into two segments (4-Q-2-S), while the second phase includes six queries divided into three segments (6-Q-3-S). These queries vary in complexity, falling into three types: simple, phrase and complex. The precision, average precision and the presence of duplicates across all the evaluated metasearch engines are determined. Findings: The study clearly demonstrated that Startpage returned the most relevant results and achieved the highest precision (0.98) among the four MSEs. Conversely, DuckDuckGo exhibited consistent performance across both phases of the study. Research limitations/implications: The study only evaluated four metasearch engines, which may not be representative of all available metasearch engines. Additionally, a limited number of queries were used, which may not be sufficient to generalize the findings to all types of queries. Practical implications: The findings of this study can be valuable for accreditation agencies in managing duplicates, improving their search capabilities and obtaining more relevant and precise results. These findings can also assist users in selecting the best metasearch engine based on precision rather than interface. Originality/value: The study is the first of its kind which evaluates the four metasearch engines. No similar study has been conducted in the past to measure the performance of metasearch engines. With the advances in smart vehicles and fog computing, Fog computing is extended to traditional Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). As a geographically distributed paradigm, Vehicle Fog Service (VFS) overcomes the limitations of VANETs in real-time response and location awareness. It supports a wide range of traffic information services, such as road warnings, congestion control, and autonomous driving. Secure communication between VFS entities is a critical problem in an open network. Meanwhile, most fog nodes are deployed in the public domain and are vulnerable to physical attacks. This paper proposes a secure authentication scheme for VFS to address the above issues. The scheme combines blockchain and physical unclonable function (PUF) to achieve two-way authentication of on-board units (OBU) and road side units (RSU) with the untrusted fog nodes. Our scheme provides conditional anonymity and non-repudiation, offering recourse in case of malicious behavior. Unlike other schemes, the proposed scheme only needs to determine whether the pseudo-identity has a revocation tag instead of scanning the whole certificate revocation list (CLS), significantly reducing the computational overhead. In addition, we use the Real-Or-Random ROR model and formally prove that the proposed scheme is provably secure, and informal security analysis shows that the scheme is robust to various known attacks. Finally, compared with existing schemes, our scheme maintains lower communication and computation costs and provides more security features, which shows that our scheme is more suitable for secure VFS environments. Serious leisure enthusiasts, including hobbyists, volunteers and amateurs, continuously need information to deepen their knowledge and improve their skills in their chosen leisure pursuits. The Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) is a conceptual model that categorises leisure activities and outlines the main components of each category. This paper aims to demonstrate how the SLP can inform policy and practice for public programming and information services across the GLAM sector. To achieve this goal, the author used the SLP as the theoretical framework, reviewed the literature and re-analysed the data pool in his ongoing research trajectory on the informational aspects of serious leisure to address the emergent research questions. The findings suggest that the SLP can inform and transform the policies and practices within the sector in various ways. Firstly, information professionals can benefit from the SLP as a conceptual model to review and revise their current policies and practices. Moreover, they can seek partnerships with local clubs and communities of serious leisure enthusiasts to foster collaboration and use their knowledge and expertise. Abstract\nHIGHLIGHTSWith the development of geographic information services, applications based on map data are increasing. Internet and mobile communication technologies have brought great convenience to the distribution, sharing, and acquisition of map data. Unfortunately, it also brings great challenges to protect the security and privacy of confidential map data. Although several encryption algorithms have been developed for map data, most of the existing methods are simple extensions of classical encryption algorithms for text data in cryptography, ignoring special structures and characteristics of geospatial data. Existing methods mainly take the entire map or layers as encryption units, which makes the encryption efficiency for large-scale map data low and limits the ability to perform local and incremental encryption for local areas, making it still challenging to meet the needs of map data in applications, such as autonomous driving. To solve the limitations, a local encryption approach for large-scale vector map data is proposed in this paper considering the structure characteristics of map data. Experiments on map data of different types (including points, lines, and polygons) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. With local and parallel encryption strategies, the proposed method has higher efficiency compared to available algorithms for large-scale map data.A local encryption approach for vector map data is proposed, which can be applied to large-scale vector map data and support localized encryption/decryption for user-interested areas instead of the whole map data.The proposed method estimates different encryption parameters for different units which could significantly enhance the resistance to attacks and naturally supports parallel computing.With local and parallel encryption strategies, the proposed method has higher efficiency compared to available algorithms for large-scale map data.The method has great value and potential for ensuring map data security in ubiquitous GIS-based applications, such as map data sharing and dynamic updating in automatic driving and crowdsourced mapping. Web 2.0 technologies have a great deal to offer while providing information services and can be used as a platform to increase the discoverability of digital collections, engage library patrons in library activities, and create online services that promote collaboration, cooperation, communication, and information sharing among public libraries at various levels in a country. The present study focuses on ICT-enabled information services provided by connemara public library and district central public libraries in Tamil Nadu, India. The study also tries to identify the extent to which Web 2.0 tools are used in public libraries to provide information services. A survey method using a questionnaire was adopted to collect data from connemara public library and selected district central public libraries of Tamil Nadu. Findings of the study show that connemara public library and district central libraries in Tamil Nadu are providing ICT-enabled information services but only a minority of these libraries are using Web 2.0 tools for the same. Analysis found that a minority of district central libraries in Tamil Nadu are using WhatsApp (28.57 %), Facebook (23.81 %), YouTube (14.29 %), Blog (9.52 %), Twitter (9.52 %) and Mobile Apps (4.76 %) to provide information services. Analysis shows that district central public libraries are using Web 2.0 to provide only very basic information to the users. Librarians are not exploiting the full potential of Web 2.0 tools in providing information services. Network services are processes running on a system with network exposure. A key activity for any network defender, penetration tester, or red team is network attack surface mapping, the act of detecting and categorizing those services through which a threat actor could attempt malicious activity. Many tools have arisen over the years to probe, identify, and classify these services for information and vulnerabilities. In this article, we survey network attack surface mapping by reviewing several prominent tools and their features and then discussing recent works reflecting unique research using those tools. Recently, Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays have been widely adopted in vehicles. However, OLED displays face a challenge in that color and luminance become distorted significantly depending on the viewing angle. This issue is particularly crucial for the Center Information Display (CID) installed to the right of the driver, which is always viewed at an angle. To address this problem, this paper proposes a software‐based method to compensate for the color and luminance distortions caused by viewing angles in vehicle OLED displays. This method involves analyzing the degree of distortion at different angles and applying corrections accordingly. We have validated the effectiveness of this approach through a series of experiments. This paper examines the learning and performance of the air traffic control (ATC) work domain. This domain was chosen because it embodies features that represent future work for many other industries (e.g., information service provision mediated by information technologies; a high reliance on communication skills and collaborative work; increasing complexity and intensity of the work activity), within an organisational context undergoing considerable change. In ATC work learning occurs formally as part of accredited training and informally, as part of everyday practice. In this way learning and experience of ATC work shapes – and is shaped by – the way work is organised, which includes the divisions of labour and technological artefacts. ATC work is experienced temporally, complexly, through affect and socially. Controllers learn to use a variety of socio-material resources which include embodiment and artefacts to undertake the work. In so doing the article demonstrates the ways in which learning and performance is not just a cognitive undertaking, but one that draws on embodiment to achieve what here is called "interdependent sentience". This involves using all their senses to gain an awareness of problems as they emerge to collectively accomplish a seamless air traffic flow in a complex interdependent socio-technical system. The authors, a chemistry professor and a librarian, used a qualitative survey to assess student perceptions of a Wikipedia editing assignment that they included in a large upper-level biochemistry course. The assignment was initially intended as a public-facing alternative to a short research paper, emphasizing information literacy and scientific literacy. The goal of the survey was to use the results to enhance the assignment. The results of the survey and research for the literature review inspired a novel approach to the assignment using the perspective of metaliteracy. The introduction of ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022 ignited a sensation in the academic community, leaving many astounded by its capabilities. This new release more closely emulates human responses than its predecessors. Among its remarkable capabilities, it can answer questions, catalog items in MARC21, recommend reading lists, and make suggestions on a wide array of topics. To assess ChatGPT’s efficacy in aiding library users, the authors of this paper conducted an experiment comparing ChatGPT’s performance with that of librarians in answering reference questions. Thirty questions were randomly selected from the transaction log of the reference inquiries between June 1, 2023 to July 31, 2023 at the Rider University Libraries. These queries constituted 34% of the total user questions during this two-month period. The authors compared the answers by ChatGPT and those by reference librarians for their accuracy, relevance, and friendliness. The findings indicate that reference librarians markedly outperformed their robotic counterpart. An evident issue arises from ChatGPT’s deficiency in understanding local policies and practices. This consequently hinders its ability to provide satisfactory answers in those areas. OpenAI posits that ChatGPT’s proficiency can be enhanced through targeted fine-tuning using locally specific information. At the moment, ChatGPT remains a great tool for librarians. Genre analysis is a methodologically prominent approach to segmenting a scientific abstract into discourse units. Genre analysis studies on scientific abstract structures have valuable outputs not only for secondary information services, including bibliographic databases and online services but also for scientific communication and library and information science (LIS) education. However, trends of research on this topic have not been investigated yet. This study identifies research trends and reveals knowledge gaps and research opportunities in genre analysis articles on scientific abstracts. For this purpose, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched to identify the articles. According to the study selection criteria, 75 articles were included in the quantitative content analysis. It was found that the most frequently studied genres were research articles (73.3%), proceedings (%12), and thesis/dissertations (8%). The sample size of the corpus ranged from 5 to 4214 abstracts (M = 223.8, MD = 94, SD = 523.8). The authors most frequently cited for abstract genre models were Hyland, Swales, and Santos, respectively. In 18.7% of articles, at least one of the abstract standards was cited. Approximately, two-thirds of the articles were comparative. Languages (44.7%), disciplines (25.5%), genres, and native/non-native authors (8.5%) were compared most frequently. English was the most frequently studied language, both individual (72.4%) and comparatively (25.9%). The results of this study suggest that the LIS community, as well as applied linguistics, can seize the opportunity to address gaps in academic genres, disciplines, and languages.
