The paper deals with the influence of the brittleness of glass fibers on the selected performance properties of the fibrous polymer composite. Understanding the fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced plastics is desirable for exploiting their features in safe, durable, and reliable industrial components. Based on the proposed methodology, it is possible to assess the impact of material reuse on selected mechanical and rheological properties. To verify the methodology by experimental analysis, homopolymer PP reinforced with chemically grafted glass fiber (30 wt%) was selected. The proposed methodology was subsequently verified by experimental analysis and evaluated statistically. The morphology of the fracture surfaces was evaluated, and the fiber-polymer matrix adhesion was monitored at the interface of the fracture surfaces. Based on the measured and evaluated values and fracture surfaces, we can say that the brittleness of the fibers significantly affects the performance properties of the tested polymer composite. This study was focused on developing and evaluating the impacts of wood and graphite fillers on an E-glass fibre-reinforced polyester composite. The fillers employed in this study include teak, casuarina, psuedon wood dust, graphite, and hybrid fillers such as casuarina and graphite fillers. They tested for tension, flexural, impact, hardness, and dynamic mechanical analysis. In the current work, the optimum loading level is 15 wt% which was determined through testing at various loading levels. The experimental results have shown that the mechanical, physical, and thermomechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polyester composites improvement mechanism analysis depend upon chemically treated wood dust fillers by avoiding surface delamination during fabrication. By using the hand layup method, composites were created by maintaining the fibre constant while distributing the fillers following the rule of mixture; a hybrid composite has a filler distribution of 1:1. Hybrid composite has exhibited increased flexural strength and hardness by 72.77%, 63.33% compared to casuarina wood of 15 wt% by avoiding incompatibility of casuarina wood filler with the resin. The glass transition value of the hybrid composite was increased by 1.4% compared to the above said casuarina wood composite, making it a more thermally resistant material. Highlights Interfacial adhesion properties are a key factor affecting the mechanical properties of composites. It is a very effective way to improve the low‐velocity impact resistance of composites by improving the interfacial adhesion properties. To improve the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion properties of GF/PA6 (glass‐fiber/polyamide 6) composites, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) were used to co‐modify GF together in this study. The GF/PA6 composites with different modifications of glass‐fiber (GF) were also prepared using a hot pressing process, and then their flexural strength, shear strength, pendulum impact strength, and low‐speed impact resistance were investigated. Next, the relationship between fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of GF/PA6 composites was investigated by combining x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x‐ray computed tomography test results. The results showed that the GF‐reinforced PA6 matrix composite with co‐modified GF by PEI and KH550 (PEI‐KH550‐GF/PA6) had the best mechanical properties, with flexural, shear, and pendulum impact strengths of 660.7 MPa, 53.1 MPa, and 261.6 kJ/m2, respectively. Furthermore, the low‐velocity impact resistance was measured in terms of stress peak, absorbed energy, residual stress, and damage extension, and the results showed that the low‐speed impact resistance of PEI‐KH550‐GF/PA6 composites was also substantially improved that the Fmax increased from 7402.1 to 10414.0 N. Due to the poor surface activity of GF, in this experiment, GF was co‐modified with PEI and KH550 to achieve better fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and successfully improve the mechanical properties of the composites; Different modification methods are used to improve the interfacial adhesion of the fiber/matrix interface. In this study, two types of composites, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and epoxy resin (ER), reinforced with 20% of glass fiber (GF) are used as the comparative research objects. Their mechanical properties after thermal aging at 85~145 °C are evaluated by tensile strength and fracture morphology analysis. The results show that the composites have similar aging laws. The tensile strength of GF/PBT and GF/ER decrease gradually with the increase of aging temperature, while their elastic moduli are independent of the thermal treatment temperature. Scanning electron microscopy study of the fracture surface shows that separation of glass fiber from PBT and ER matrix becomes more obvious at higher aging temperature. The fibers on the matrix surface appear clear and smooth, and the whole pulled out GFs can be observed. As a main mechanical strength degradation mechanism, the deterioration of interface adhesion between the matrix and GF is discussed. Hybridizing the natural fibers with stronger synthetic fibers could significantly improve the properties of the natural fiber-reinforced composites. The improved mechanical capabilities of fiber reinforced polymers result from the fiber's capacity for withstanding a more substantial portion of the mechanical load compared to the matrix it replaces. In order to guarantee the efficient transfer of the mechanical load from the matrix to the reinforcement, it is necessary to incorporate a fibrous filler. Transference takes place when the length of the fiber is longer than a specific critical length. Fibers which are shorter than the critical length will pull out from the matrix when tested to a tensile load. In some cases, complete transfer of the load is not performed. The goal of this study is to learn more about flax (FF), glass (GF), and mixtures of flax and glass (FF + GF) short fiber-reinforced PLA-PBS composites. This is performed to find out how the flax/glass combination affects the mechanical properties of PLA-PBS-reinforced short fiber composites. In order to extend their use for industrial applications, these composites were manufactured via extrusion and, afterward, injection molding. Fiber aspect ratios were followed after compounding and injection processing. The analysis of fiber lengths reveals a noteworthy observation: the proportion of fibers exceeding their critical length of 531 µm and 772 µm for FF and GF, respectively, is more significant when flax fibers (FF) and glass fibers (GF) are combined compared to when they reinforce the composite individually. Specifically, the composite containing both FF and GF exhibits a higher percentage of fibers surpassing their critical length, compared to their individual reinforcement in the composite. The results reveal that 27% of individually extracted single FF exceed their critical length, whereas a higher proportion, at 34%, is observed when FF is part of the composite mixture. In contrast, the critical length is surpassed by only 4% of individually extracted single GF, whereas the combined presence of GF in the composite results in a notably higher percentage, at 19%. The tensile properties of these composites were investigated considering the effect of the hybridization by flax/glass short fibers. It was noted that the tensile properties of the hybrid composites increase comparing to the flax composites from 42.4 MPa to 53 MPa for the tensile strength and from 4.9 GPa to 5.4 GPa for the tensile modulus. In contrast, the elongation at break of the hybrid composites decreases from 1.7% to 1.5% with the incorporation of glass fibers. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of the mixture law and the Cox-Krenchel model. To expand the applications of hybrid fiber composites in structural engineering applications, it is essential to study their fatigue behavior. The tensile and fatigue performance of unidirectional hybrid basalt/glass epoxy composites made with vacuum‐assisted resin infusion molding are investigated in this research. The sequencing influence on tensile properties was assessed using the two configurations of basalt/glass fiber epoxy hybrid fiber composites, namely GBBBG and BGBGB, having nearly equal volume fractions. According to the test results, hybrid fiber composites showed a positive hybrid effect on their tensile strength. Both hybrid layups showed higher tensile strengths (3.5% to 10.5%) than GFRPs and BFRPs. The GBBBG laminate has slightly higher fatigue resistance than BGBGB laminate under tension–tension (T–T) fatigue. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images verify the fatigue failure modes, which include fiber, matrix cracking, delamination, and debonding. The DMA analysis showed the lower adhesion efficiency of hybrid fiber composites, signifying lower damping properties. The utilization of hollow glass particle‐filled fiber‐reinforced composites in marine applications necessitates a proper understanding of their behavior when exposed to moisture environments. In this study, the glass fiber‐reinforced composites reinforced with 0%–30% volume fraction of glass microspheres were fabricated and immersed in seawater and distilled water conditions for monotonic tensile and flexural testing. The degradation mechanisms were analyzed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moisture absorption results showed an increasing trend with the inclusion of glass microspheres. A decline in glass transition temperature and storage modulus was observed as a result of moisture absorption. The tensile results of the specimens exhibited a decrease of 13% and 9% in distilled water and seawater solution, respectively when compared with unaged samples, respectively. The flexural results of the aged composite specimens demonstrated a reduction of 24% and 11% in distilled water and seawater solution, respectively when compared with unaged samples. The findings also show that the influence of moisture on the modulus is less pronounced compared to its effect on strength under both environmental conditions. The micrograph results revealed a notable deterioration of the glass microsphere and the fiber/matrix interface in the moist environment. This study investigates the effects of filler content and type on the mechanical (tensile strength and impact resistance) and tribological properties of woven glass fiber‐reinforced composites (WGFC) produced using three different nanofillers (MgO, CuO, and Al2O3) at various loading levels (0.7, 1.4, and 2.8 wt%). Additionally, analyses of the artificial neural network algorithm were reported for the predictions of wear rate, mass loss, and coefficient of friction (COF) by given applied load, sliding distance, filler ratio, and filler type. The composites were fabricated using the hand lay‐up method. The filled composites were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the worn surfaces of the samples after the wear test were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The wear resistance of the composite samples improved at 0.7 wt% CuO and 1.4 wt% MgO filler contents. At 200 m sliding distance and 1.4 wt% filler ratio, the highest wear ratio was determined as 55 mm3/m × 10−3 in the Al2O3‐filled composite, and the lowest was determined as 31 mm3/m × 10−3 in the MgO‐filled composite. At 1.4% filler ratio and 15 N load, the lowest friction coefficient was determined as 0.45 μ in MgO‐filled composite, and the highest was 0.56 μ in Al2O3‐filled composite. Al2O3 filler increased the mass loss and wear rate of the composite material. In Charpy impact tests, the maximum impact energy of 13.9 J/m2 was obtained with a 2.8 wt% Al2O3 filler content. Tensile tests showed an increase in tensile strength for all filler contents compared to unfilled composites. The highest tensile strength of 242.1 MPa was achieved with 0.7 wt% CuO reinforcement. Highlights: In all applied wear parameters and filler ratios, the Al2O3 filler adversely affected the wear resistance of the composite, while the MgO filler showed the best performance in terms of wear resistance.All types and ratios of fillers increased the tensile strength compared to the unfilled composite.Contrary to its negative effect on wear, the Al2O3‐filled composites exhibited the highest impact resistance.The prediction analysis of the tribological behavior of composite material using ANN reveals that the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm fits very well. An evaluation of the interlaminar fracture toughness of polyamide/glass fiber laminates with various layups is reported. Due to large differences in thermal expansion coefficients of fiber and binder the laminates with layups where single layers are swapped exhibit high warping. A technique for avoiding this is proposed, allowing evaluating interlaminar fracture toughness of various angle interfaces. Two different layups for evaluating the Mode I and II interlaminar fracture toughness are tested. The differences of delamination behavior of a number of different-angle fiber interfaces are shown and analyzed. The applicability of the proposed testing technique is discussed. Currently, numerous researchers, scientists, and industrialists are drawn towards utilizing natural fillers rather than synthetic ones because of their environmentally-friendly characteristics, lower density per unit volume and favorable mechanical attributes. Several studies have demonstrated that using organic filler in polyester matrix composites, instead of disposing of them in landfills, has various advantages. The current study focuses on the investigation of the mechanical characteristics of composite material made from a combination of bagasse, eggshell, and e-glass fibers exhibit characteristics such as strength under tension, strength under bending, resistance to indentation, and mass per unit volume. Different weight percentages of eggshell/bagasse were used to make the material using the hand lay-up technique (3wt%, 6wt%, 9wt%, and 12wt%), with 19wt% of glass fiber mixed in the resin. The use of inorganic fillers like calcium carbonate, a non-renewable mineral that may be expensive and environmentally hazardous to extract and process, is being reduced in favor of organic fillers like eggshell and bagasse, which are inexpensive and readily available. Specimens were generated by interposing fiber waste amidst chopped strand glass fiber mats, with variations in the bagasse, eggshell and polyester content, while keeping the amount of E-glass fiber constant. Afterward, the specimens were trimmed to the appropriate dimensions and subjected to analysis with a universal apparatus. The research showed that enhancing the quantity of bagasse/ eggshell fiber within the hybrid composite resulted in an enhancement of its mechanical characteristics. The efficient modeling of 3D-printed parts, especially long fiber-reinforced composite parts, is a significant concern. This paper discusses finite-element modeling using the embedded element technique to simulate the mechanical behavior of specimens reinforced with long glass fibers. The study considered the concentric deposition mode of the fibers, the walls, and the solid filling pattern of the printed parts as parameters. In addition, classical numerical modeling of the composites using 2D Shell elements and an analytical prediction of the Young's modulus using the rule of mixtures were implemented. The results showed that both the classical 2D Shell modeling and the law of mixtures predict the Young's modulus with acceptable prediction error. However, these approaches have limitations in predicting the overall behavior of the specimens. The chemical structure of the surface of glass fibers, including silanized fibers, was studied. Highly efficient heat-resistant composites were obtained by impregnating silanized glass fiber with a polysulfone solution, and the effect of modification of the surface of glass fibers on the physical, mechanical and thermophysical properties of the composite materials was studied. As a result of the study, it was found that the fiber-to-polymer ratio of 70/30 wt.% showed the best mechanical properties for composites reinforced with pre-heat-treated and silanized glass fibers. It has been established that the chemical treatment of the glass fibers with silanes makes it possible to increase the mechanical properties by 1.5 times compared to composites reinforced with initial fibers. It was found that the use of silane coupling agents made it possible to increase the thermal stability of the composites. Mechanisms that improve the interfacial interaction between the glass fibers and the polymer matrix have been identified. It has been shown that an increase in adhesion occurs both due to the uniform distribution of the polymer on the surface of the glass fibers and due to the improved wettability of the fibers by the polymer. An interpenetrating network was formed in the interfacial region, providing a chemical bond between the functional groups on the surface of the glass fiber and the polymer matrix, which was formed as a result of treating the glass fiber surface with silanes, It has been shown that when treated with aminopropyltriethoxysilane, significant functional unprotonated amino groups NH+/NH2+ are formed on the surface of the fibers; such free amino groups, oriented in the direction from the fiber surface, form strong bonds with the matrix polymer. The purpose of the study was to evaluate selected mechanical properties and structural characteristics of samples manufactured using composite filament fabrication (CFF) technology from Onyx material, whichwas filled with continuous glass fiber. Selected mechanical properties were correlated with the density of the resulting composite to determine the specific strength of the fabricated parts. The test specimens were manufactured on a Mark Two Enterprise machine (Markforged, USA) using composite filament fabrication (CFF) technology. The material used was polyamide 6.6 with a 20% short carbon fiber content with the trade name Onyx. Continuous glass fiber was used to reinforce the fabrication. The density of the manufactured samples was determined using a hydrostatic method. Methanol was used as the liquid. By determining the density of the samples, it was possible to estimate through appropriate calculations what specific strength and specific modulus the obtained composites would have. Determination of tensile and flexural strengths was carried out in accordance with ISO 527-1:2012 and ISO 178:2003. Determination of the impact tensile strength of the samples was carried out in accordance with ISO 8256, the beams were tested using the A method. Due to the high impact tensile strength, two 1 mm notches with an angle of 45°were made on the specimens. The image of the sample structure obtained by the CFF method was recorded using a CT scanner. A thermogravimetric test (TG) of the Onyx matrix material was carried out. The samples were tested approximately 72 hours after fabrication. Filling the samples with continuous glass fiber above 50% leads to a slight increase in impact resistance. The density of the composite increased by only 16% relative to the reference samples, resulting in a 389% increase in the maximum average flexural strength. Despite significant discontinuities in the structure of the produced composite, it was possible to record an increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus by 606% and 370%, respectively. In this study, we compare the effect of various precursor‐based graphene oxide (GO) nanofillers on enhancing the mechanical performance of E‐glass fiber‐reinforced epoxy resin composites (EGFPs). GO derived from bituminous coal (BC‐GO) and graphite (Gr‐GO) were dispersed into an epoxy resin matrix. The resulting mixture was combined with E‐glass fiber mats using vacuum‐assisted resin infusion molding. Notable improvements (38.9% in flexural strength, 22.9% in tensile strength, and 21.6% in impact strength) were observed in BC‐GO‐reinforced EGFPs at 0.25 phr loading of BC‐GO. The improvements for Gr‐GO‐reinforced EGFPs were 28%, 9.3%, and 6.8%, respectively. XRD analysis of BC‐GO showed a diffraction peak at 2θ = 20.9°. Except for this peak, no other crystalline peaks were observed when BC‐GO was incorporated into EGFPs. FTIR spectra of both composite samples, with or without the nanofiller, were similar due to the spectral peaks overlap. TEM demonstrated the exfoliated morphology of BC‐GO in EGFPs. These findings underscore the potential of BC‐GO as a cost‐effective reinforcement for polymer nanocomposites across various industrial applications, including the development of lightweight and strong materials for aerospace and automotive industries, protective coatings, petroleum, and aerospace production systems. Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are manufactured using various methods, with vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM or VARIM). This study's primary focus lies in assessing how the orientation of sampling impacts the mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced pure and nanocomposites. 2 wt.% nano Al2O3- doped and non-doped composites were produced using the VARTM process. Tensile, flexural, and density test specimens were extracted from three distinct zones and two distinc direction those aligned horizontally to the resin flow (HRF) and those oriented vertically to the resin flow (VRF). Remarkably, results showed up to a 3.91% increase in values from samples in the third zone, particularly on the vacuum outlet side. Random polypropylene composites reinforced with short glass fibres have been successfully fabricated by melt-mixing. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) was added to the composites, which was expected to act as a compatibilizer and greatly limit the negative effects known to arise from the feeble polymer matrix/glass fibre interfaces. The effect of compatibilizer concentration on the structural, mechanical and thermal behaviour of the composites has been investigated. The results revealed an improvement of the glass fibre/matrix interaction upon the addition of the compatibilizer, which resulted in enhancing the overall material stiffness and the ability of the matrix to store energy. In particular, the lowering of the glass transition and the investigation of the fracture surfaces of the composites confirmed the improved PPR/fibre adhesion. Examination of the tensile elongation indicated the improvement of the Young's modulus and yield strength with the addition of PP-g-MA, while the storage modulus was also shown to be significantly increased. These results confirmed the versatility and efficiency of the approach presented in this work to improve the thermomechanical properties and sustainability of PPR and promote its usage in industrial applications and commercial manufacturing. This study aimed to ascertain the alterations in aging responses of fiber‐reinforced composites, as well as the effects of their natural particle reinforcement, through exposure to acidic and alkaline solutions. Specimens were produced with 0 wt. % (neat), 1 wt. %, 2 wt. % and 3 wt. % particle ratios from acorn and pinecone particles. A particle content of 2 wt. % was determined to yield the best mechanical properties in all mechanical tests conducted for pinecone reinforcement. The highest improvement in strength, observed in 3 wt. % pinecone‐reinforced composites, reached 22.5% at flexural strength. HCl and NaOH diluted in water were chosen as aging solutions. Mechanical tests were repeated at different stages of aging. According to the findings, 1 wt. % particle‐reinforced composites showed better resilience to the mechanical property reduction effect of aging compared to the 2 wt. % and 3 wt. % particle‐reinforced composites. At a particle ratio of 2 wt. %, the acorn‐reinforced specimens exhibit their highest maximum penetration force, which is 5% higher than that of the 0 wt. % composite, consistent with the results of tensile and compressive tests. In this paper, the effect of a novel fibre reinforcement architecture in the adhesively bonded joint efficiency of natural fibre reinforced composites (NFRC) was investigated. Two different reinforcement techniques were used: intralaminar reinforcement (2D) and orthogonal-through-the-thickness reinforcement (3D). The aim of the novel architecture is to enhance the transverse properties of the adherend (transverse strength and fracture toughness) in order to delay or avoid delamination failures. A jute bidirectional fabric was used as a base primary reinforcement phase and curauá, sisal, ramie, hemp and glass fibres were used as secondary reinforcement phases for the 2D and 3D fibre reinforcement architectures. Single lap joints (SLJs) bonded with an epoxy adhesive used in the automotive industry were fabricated with these adherends and the efficiency of the joints was investigated by comparing them to glass (GFRP) and carbon (CFRP) pure synthetic fibre reinforced composite joints. It was found that the novel architecture was successful in reaching the failure load of the synthetic composite joints for SISAL 3D, CURAUÁ 2D and CURAUÁ 3D SLJs. Glass fiber‐reinforced polymer‐matrix (GFRP) composites are used to manufacture devices such as radomes, electrical insulators, and radar‐absorbing structures, many of which are used in applications with strict mechanical and dielectric property requirements. As such, designs and properties of GFRP composite materials should be regularly improved to guarantee their safe operation and meet their constantly evolving application requirements. In this study, glass fiber (GF) particles and epoxy resin 128 (EP‐128) were used to manufacture high‐performance EP/GF‐X composites with GF particle contents ranging from 5% to 40%. An investigation into their mechanical and dielectric properties revealed that EP/GF‐20 composite specimens presented the best mechanical performance with their bending strength and modulus reaching 159.68 MPa and 6521.92 MPa, respectively, and an average dielectric constant of 4.862 within the 10–105 Hz frequency range. A theoretical analysis of the EP/GF‐X composite specimens' dielectric constants using classic dielectric models based on the Lichtenecker, Bruggeman, Jaysundere‐Smith, and Maxwell‐Garnett rule‐of‐mixture equations indicated that the dielectric model based on the Bruggeman rule‐of‐mixture equation provided the dielectric constants closest to the measured values with a maximum deviation of less than −0.321% for EP/GF‐40 composites. This study provides a feasible strategy to control the mechanical and dielectric properties of GFRP composites. Composites with excellent flame retardant and mechanical properties are in high demand in the aerospace and various industrial fields. Glass fiber (GF) reinforced polyimide (PI) composites (GFRPCs) were fabricated using a simple ball milling and hot pressing technique. The effect of GF content on the thermal stability, mechanical and flame retardant properties of composites has been systematically studied. The Rockwell hardness of GFRPCs increase with increasing GF content, while the compressive strength, impact strength and flexural strength initially show an increase followed by a decrease due to the excellent dispersibility of the fillers and the strong interfacial interaction between the one‐dimensional GF and PI matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis results show that the addition of GF with very low thermal conductivity and excellent temperature resistance can effectively improve the thermal stability of PI. Adding GF into PI can obviously improve the limiting oxygen index value. Moreover, as the GF content increased, the time to ignition of the composites prolonged while total heat release decreased. These findings suggest a viable solution for enhancing both the flame retardance and mechanical properties of PI‐based composites. Fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites have many advantages, such as repeated molding, high toughness, durability and recyclability, which made them a potential substitute as engineering strengthening materials for thermosetting composites. However, their long-term performances under complex service environments are not well understood, hindering its durability design. In the present paper, glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GFRPP) plate was studied on its mechanical property evaluation subjected to water immersion (distilled water) and bending (bending strains of 0.54 % and 1.04 %) at elevated temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C) up to 180 days. Water uptake, mechanical properties, thermal properties and microstructure tests were further carried out to reveal the effects of water uptake content, immersed temperature and bending loading level on the properties. The results showed the water absorption curve at three temperatures presents a two-stage diffusion behavior. After the longest immersion time of 180 days, the strength retention of plate at 40 °C, 60 °C and 80 °C were 88.2 %, 58.3 % and 31.8 % for tensile strength, 83.6 %, 67.8 % and 47.9 % for flexural strength and 70.6 %, 61.7 % and 41.4 % for in-plane shear strength. Higher immersion temperature accelerated the swelling effects of polypropylene. Higher bending loading levels accelerated the crack or defects formation and propagation in the resin as well as at the interface. When the strength retention rates were 50 %, the longest service life of plate exposed in service environment of Da Lian (T=9.2 °C) were 23.9 years (tensile strength), 12.8 years (flexural strength) and 3.0 years (in-plane shear strength) without the bending strain. Through comparing with thermosetting composites, glass fiber reinforced polypropylene has almost close or higher tensile strength retention rate and service life for certain service conditions. • The maximum water absorption and diffusion coefficient of composites were lower than epoxy or polyurethane based composites. • Higher immersion temperature accelerated the swelling effects of polypropylene. • Higher bending loading levels accelerated the crack or defects propagation in the resin as well as at the interface. • When the strength retention rates were 50 %, the longest service life of tensile strength were 23.9 years. Fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite bars offered the advantages of repeated molding, high toughness, and recyclability, making them a promising alternative to steel bars. For the stirrups applications in concrete structures, it was essential to develop efficient bending technologies for producing high-quality thermoplastic bending bars. In the present paper, the bending properties of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GFRPP) composite bars were investigated by experimental and theoretical methods. A novel bending fixture of GFRPP bars was specifically designed for GFRPP bars to ensure the reliable bending of the bars. Finite element simulation was employed to analyze the stress distribution of GFRPP bars, providing valuable insights into their mechanical behavior. Additionally, a bending strength model was developed based on the material mechanics, offering a theoretical framework for understanding and predicting the bending strength of GFRPP bars. Finally, the bending mechanism of bars was further revealed according to experimental and theoretical findings. The results of the study demonstrated that the specially designed bending fixture was successful in minimizing damage to the bending section of the GFRPP bars, leading to a significant improvement in bending strength retention of up to 43.2 %. Furthermore, the theoretical results and experimental test have a good agreement in terms of stress distribution and failure mode. The maximum strain in the transition zone between the straight section and the bending section of the GFRPP bars was nearly double that of the straight section at the same stress levels. With the increase of bending radius to diameter ratio from 3.0 to 7.0, the tensile strength of GFRPP bending bars increased by ∼7.9 %. The study identified the transition area between the bending section and straight section of GFRPP bars as the most critical failure point. The strength degradation mechanism during the bending were attributed to the shrinkage and torsion of inner fibers owing to the compression caused the local stress concentration, which caused the inner resin matrix to crack and interface debonding of fiber/resin, leading to the premature tensile failure. • The bending fixture can achieve the high bending strength retention up to 43.2 %. • Theoretical and experimental results verified the most unfavorable failure point. • Larger bending radius contributed to the decrease ∼7.9 % of tensile strength. • Fiber distortion and interface debonding led to tensile failure of bending bars. To address the deficiencies in traditional communication towers in mobile communication engineering, such as heavy weight, easy corrosion and poor durability, this study proposes replacing traditional communication towers with GFRP communication lattice towers with lightweight, high-strength and good durability. Firstly, GFRP material test and GFRP circle tube bending capacity test are conducted. The maximum bending moment that can be subjected to the anchorage end of GFRP circular tube is 18.20 kN·m. Finite element analysis of GFRP circular tubes verifies the accuracy of the bending test results. Secondly, a GFRP communication lattice tower with a height of 25 m is designed adopting GFRP circular tubes as tower columns. Through the bending test of the GFRP tower, it is verified that the connection between the columns and web members of the GFRP tower is reliable and the force pattern of the GFRP tower is reasonable. The large deflection theory can be adopted to the displacement of GFRP towers accurately. Thirdly, according to the actual engineering requirements, the finite element analysis of 25 m-high GFRP tower under the basic wind pressure of 0.45 kN/m2 is carried out by using 3D3S (a spatial structure design software). It can be obtained that the vibration mode of the GFRP communication tower shows two forms of lateral bending and axial torsion. 0° wind load direction has the greatest influence on the displacement of the GFRP tower. The stress ratio of each component in the GFRP tower is less than 1, indicating that no damage occurs in the GFRP tower. Finally, GFRP towers have good economic benefits, good environmental performance and wide range of application after comparing the GFRP tower and traditional steel tower. The demonstration project of the GFRP communication lattice tower is established in Qingyuan City, Guangdong Province, China. When subjected to a typhoon with a wind speed of 17.26 m/s, The horizontal displacement of the GFRP tower top is 10 m, which is about 2/5 of the height of GFRP tower. Although the displacement is large, the GFRP tower is still not destroyed. It can be concluded from the research in this paper that GFRP towers have low cost, good mechanical properties, good durability, and wide application range, which can promote the rapid construction of 5 G communication base stations.
