Black carbon (BC) exerts potential effects on climate, especially in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), where the cryosphere and environment are very sensitive to climate change. The TP saw a record-breaking aerosol pollution event during the period from 20 April to 10 May 2016. This paper investigates the meteorological causes of the severe aerosol pollution event, the transboundary transport flux of BC, the aerosol–meteorology feedback, and its effect on the transboundary transport flux of BC during the severe aerosol pollution event using observational and reanalysis datasets as well as simulation based on a coupled meteorology and aerosol/chemistry model, Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). By analyzing weather maps derived from the reanalysis dataset, it is found that the plateau vortex and southerly winds were key factors that contributed to the severe aerosol pollution event. Subsequently, due to the good performance of the WRF-Chem model for the spatiotemporal characteristics of meteorological conditions and aerosols, the transboundary transport flux of BC during the pollution event was investigated. The results show that the vertically integrated cross-Himalayan transport flux of BC decreases from west to east, with the largest transport flux of 20.8 mg m -2 s -1 occurring at the deepest mountain valley in southwestern TP. Results from simulations with and without aerosol–meteorology feedback show that aerosols induce significant changes in meteorological conditions in the southern TP and the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), with the atmospheric stratification being more stable and the planetary boundary layer height decreasing in both regions, and the 10 m wind speed increasing in the southern TP but decreasing in the IGP. Changes in meteorological conditions in turn lead to a decrease in the surface BC concentration in the southern TP of up to 0.16 µ g m -3 (50 %) and an increase in the surface BC concentration in the IGP of up to 2.2 µ g m -3 (75 %). In addition, it is found that the aerosol–meteorology feedback decreases the vertically integrated transboundary transport flux of BC from the central and western Himalayas towards the TP. This study not only provides crucial policy implications for mitigating glacier melt caused by aerosols over the TP but is also of great significance for the protection of the ecological environment of the TP. South Asian air pollutants exert substantial effect on the climate and environment change over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). This paper investigates the trans-boundary transport of PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 from South Asia to the TP via WRF-Chem sensitive analysis. It is found that PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 over South Asia are mainly sourced from anthropogenic sources. South Asian emissions contribute up to 54% of PM 10 (PM 2.5) in the TP in the pre-monsoon season. For O 3 , the highest contribution of 18.13% is in the monsoon season, while the lowest contribution of 8.67% is in the winter season. To evaluate the respective contributions of anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions in South Asia to PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 in the TP, anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions in South Asia are considered separately. The results show that the largest percentage contribution of PM 10 (PM 2.5) from South Asian anthropogenic emissions to PM 10 (PM 2.5) in the TP with value of 35.86% (37.77%) occurs in winter, while the lowest percentage contribution of 16.52% (16.77%) appears in the monsoon season. For O 3 , the largest contribution of 17.74% from South Asian anthropogenic emissions appears in the monsoon season, whereas the lowest contribution of 8.59% occurs in winter. Compared to the anthropogenic emissions, the biomass burning emissions in South Asia have a relative less contribution to PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 in the TP. The largest contribution of PM 10 (PM 2.5) from South Asian biomass burning emissions to PM 10 (PM 2.5) in the TP is 20.04% (18.37%) in the pre-monsoon season. Conversely, the lowest contribution of 0.58% (0.53) appears in the monsoon season. O 3 from South Asian biomass burning emissions contributes <1% to O 3 in the TP in each season, implying that the biomass burning emissions in South Asia have little effect on O 3 in the TP. This study is of great significance to the ecological environment protection for the TP. • Contributions of South Asian emissions to PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 in the TP are quantified. • Anthropogenic emissions in South Asia have a larger contribution to PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and O 3 in the TP. • O 3 from South Asian biomass burning emissions contributes <1% to O 3 in the Tibetan Plateau. This study investigates the interdecadal change in the covariability between the Tibetan Plateau (TP) east–west dipole precipitation and Indian precipitation during summer and primarily explores the modulation of atmospheric circulation anomalies on the covariability. The results reveal that the western TP precipitation (WTPP), eastern TP precipitation (ETPP), and northwestern Indian precipitation (NWIP) have covariability, with an in-phase variation between the WTPP and NWIP and an out-of-phase variation between the WTPP and ETPP. Moreover, this covariability was unclear during 1981–2004 and became significant during 2005–2019, showing a clear interdecadal change. During 2005–2019, a thick geopotential height anomaly, which tilted slightly northward, governed the TP, forming upper- and lower-level coupled circulation anomalies (i.e., anomalous upper-level westerlies over the TP and lower-level southeasterlies and northeasterlies around the southern flank of the TP). As such, the upper- and lower-tropospheric circulation anomalies synergistically modulate the summer WTPP, ETPP, and NWIP, causing the covariability of summer precipitation over the TP and India during 2005–2019. The upper- or lower-level circulation anomalies cannot independently result in significant precipitation covariability. During 1981–2004, the upper- and lower-level circulation anomalies were not strongly coupled, which caused precipitation non-covariability. The sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the western North Pacific (WNP) and tropical Atlantic (TA) may synergistically modulate the upper- and lower-level coupled circulation anomalies, contributing to the covariability of the WTPP, ETPP, and NWIP during 2005–2019. The modulation of the WNP and TA SSTs on the coupled circulation anomalies was weaker during 1981–2004, which was therefore not conducive to this precipitation covariability. This study may provide valuable insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of spatiotemporal variation in summer precipitation over the TP and its adjacent regions, thus offering scientific support for local water resource management, ecological environment protection, and social and economic development.
