Cellulose is now considered as an appealing environment friendly material for the development of sustainable separators for rechargeable batteries. This study thus aims to develop high performance paper based ceramic separators with superior electrolyte wettability (>170 %), high thermal stability (>200 °C) and excellent flame safety. While developing paper based ceramic separator, extensive studies are carried out to understand thenature and functionality of different nano-structured ceramic materials (Al 2 O 3 , BaTiO 3 and ZrO 2) impregnated in paper matrix. Nano-ZrO 2 facilitates an effective pathway for Li +-ion transport (t Li + = 0.51), whereas BaTiO 3 and Al 2 O 3 ceramics show moderate Li +-ion transport properties (t Li+ of 0.29 and 0.30 respectively). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurement clearly reveals that ZrO 2 exhibits more interfacial compatibility with the electrodes (MCMB and LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2) compared to the other two ceramic separators during full cell operation. The developed paper separators show excellent electrochemical properties in terms of cycling (tested 300 cycles), multi-electrode compatibility and rate capabilities at different current densities of 0.1–1.2 mAcm−2. The pre- and post-electrochemical EIS data reveal that ZrO 2 based impregnation offers significantly lower charge transfer resistance compared to the other two separators. The study thus demonstrates a real promise for its successful application in Li-ion battery towards achieving sustainability and safety. The paper explores the deformation of metallic nanolaminates and acknowledges the contribution of Professor Hussein Zbib. The paper characterizes waste in the form of fly ash generated in a power plant during the combustion of biomass in a fluidized bed in terms of its possible use in the ceramic building materials industry. This is important from the point of view of environmental protection. In order to assess the possibility of using ash in the production of red ceramics (e.g. bricks), two different clay raw materials (Clay I and Clay II) were selected to prepare the raw material sets. First of all, the investigated fly ash was subjected to thermogravimetric TG-DTG analysis and its basic chemical composition was determined. Then the specific density was determined for all the raw materials, XRD analysis was also performed and finally characteristic temperatures were determined by means of a high-temperature microscope. The basic raw material sets included clayey raw material and fly ash in various contents: 5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%. Samples were pressed from the ready sets and fired at the temperature of 1000℃. Afterwards, the obtained samples were subjected to XRD and microstructural tests, then selected physical properties were determined, i.e. water absorption, porosity, apparent density, and compressive strength. Based on the research and analysis of the results, it was found that the introduction of fly ash from biomass combustion into the raw material set in the range of 5–15 wt% has a positive effect on the insulating properties of red ceramics. In addition, the density of the red ceramics decreases with the increase in the addition of fly ash, while its porosity and water absorption increase. Furthermore, the addition of fly ash decreases the compressive strength and visually brightens the microstructure of the products. • It is possible to use fly ash from combustion in the production of red ceramics. • The sintering process transforms dusty waste into a harmless product. • The addition of ashes to clay reduces the density of finished products. • Products with the addition of fly ash have higher porosity. • Ceramic products with the addition of ashes are full-value products. Mosaic ceramics are not limited to use solely as building materials, they also possess artistic value. Artists can create images by arranging and combining mosaic ceramics, resulting in a perfect fusion of large-scale public art for external walls and ceramic materials. However, the current approach for artists to create mosaic ceramic exterior wall art images involves manual laying and assembling of individual mosaic ceramics. This manual process suffers from issues such as low efficiency, eye fatigue, selection errors, and the risk of high-altitude operations. These challenges significantly impact the quality and efficiency of creating mosaic ceramic exterior wall art image images. To address these problems, this paper proposes an automatic mosaic ceramic art image stitching method based on subpixel edge fitting positioning and collaborative operation of multiple robotic arms. Additionally, a new U + I type conveying method is designed for efficient and space-saving transportation of mosaic ceramics. Experimental results demonstrate a high success rate of recognition, absorption, and placement of multi-color mosaic ceramics using this method reaching 95.45%, with a positioning error within 0.5 mm. The method can also adapt to varying levels of light intensity or noise interference. This approach effectively enhances the quality and efficiency of creating mosaic ceramic exterior wall art images and promotes the development of mosaic ceramic exterior wall public art creation. This paper investigates the free vibration of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates supported by different boundary conditions and influenced by a three-parameter viscoelastic foundation and hygro-thermal changes. Three types of FGM sandwich plates are studied and discussed, in which the FGM layers vary according to the power law rule and consist of ceramic and metal materials. An efficient and simple four-variable integral higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is employed to model the analytical solution of the considered problem. Hamilton principle is implemented to obtain the plates' governing equations and to derive the eigenvalue equation for the free vibration study. The model is verified by comparing numerical results with previous studies on the vibration of exponentially graded plates. New results are presented in this paper showing the influences of different boundary conditions, hygro-thermal changes, viscoelastic parameters, vibration modes, material exponents, and geometric dimensions. Geopolymers (GPs) are emerging, low‐density ceramic materials that are simple to manufacture, with high elastic modulus and strength, albeit with low toughness. Fiber reinforcements have been used to achieve varied ductile behaviors, but little is known about the GP addition to polymeric frame structures. Thus, drawing inspiration from the nanostructure of bones, this paper investigated an interpenetrating, co‐continuous composite consisting of a GP as the stiff but brittle phase, and a 3D‐printed polymer (PA12 White) as the soft and deformable phase. The composite mechanical properties and failure modes were studied experimentally using uniaxial compression and four‐point bending tests. The co‐continuous network constrained brittle cracking within the GP and reduced strain localization in the polymer. The results showed that the composite had higher strength (56.11 ± 2.12 MPa) and elastic modulus (6.08 ± 1.37 GPa) than the 3D‐printed polymer and had higher toughness (5.98 ± 0.24 MJ/mm3) than the GP for the specific geometries examined. The shape effect study demonstrated that cubic structures had higher elastic modulus and strength but at the expense of lower toughness when compared to rectangular prism structures. The study of scale effects indicated that increasing the number of periodic unit cells while maintaining consistent bulk dimensions led to augmented strength and toughness, albeit without statistically significant alterations in elastic modulus. Thus, this paper presents an experimental realization of a novel, bio‐inspired, interpenetrating, GP–polymer composite design, offering improved strength and toughness. In the current paper, the free longitudinal vibration response of axially restrained functionally graded nanorods is presented for the first time based on the doublet mechanics theory. Size dependent nanorod is considered to be made of functionally graded material consist of ceramic and metal constituents. It is assumed that the material properties of the functionally graded nanorod are assumed to vary in the radial direction. The aim of this study is that to investigate the influences of various parameters such as functionally graded index, small size parameter, length of the nanorod, mode number and spring stiffness on vibration behaviors of functionally graded nanorod restrained with axial springs at both ends. For this purpose, Fourier sine series are used to define the axial deflection of the functionally graded nanorod. Then, an eigenvalue approach is established for longitudinal vibrational frequencies thanks to Stokes' transformation to deformable axial springs. Thus, the presented eigenvalue solution method is attributed to both rigid and deformable boundary conditions for the axial vibration of the functionally graded nanorod. With the help of the results obtained with the presented eigenvalue problem, it is observed that the parameters examined cause significant changes in the frequencies of the functionally graded nanorod. Curved ceramic materials possess corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant, and exceptional hardness, rendering them indispensable in many critical fields, including automotive, aerospace, biomedical, architectural, and artistic applications. The detection of defects in these materials is of paramount importance; but traditional inspection methods fall short due to their unique structural characteristics. Presently, the assessment of curved ceramics predominantly relies on manual inspection, which is fraught with subjective errors and inefficiencies. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in machine vision technology as applied to defect detection across various types of curved ceramic materials, including industrial, daily-use, and artistic ceramics. The paper highlights the key factors influencing the development of surface defect detection technology in curved ceramics. It summarises the advantages and disadvantages of traditional machine vision and deep learning approaches for defect detection in curved ceramics and analyzes their respective application scopes. Concluding with an examination of the technical challenges inherent in defect detection, the paper also outlines a prospective trajectory for the advancement of inspection technology in curved ceramic materials. The ceramic materials studied in this paper consist of finely dispersed crystalline phases embedded in a glassy matrix, which is similar to glass-ceramic materials, porcelain, and VC products. The strength depends then not only on the properties of the individual crystalline phases but also on their interactions and the matrix. Differences in mechanical properties for materials with similar chemical compositions are most likely related to diverging microstructures. Crystal orientation, grain-size distribution and shape, the ratio of the glass matrix to the crystalline phase, and homogeneity control the flexural strength of glass-ceramic materials. The subject of the study is whiteware ceramic materials from the SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 –Na 2 O–K 2 O–MgO–SrO system, fired similarly to the regime used for VC products. The effect of the type of alkali oxide and the share of SrO were tested. The paper presents an interdisciplinary study based on an experimental model for investigating clay sources to identify prehistoric human behavior regarding resources. The study focuses on the Middle Bronze Age (1955/1773–1739/1614 cal. BC) settlement of Siliştea-Pe Cetățuie in eastern Romania, where archaeological materials from the Costișa and Monteoru cultures were discovered. Standard criteria for macroscopic analysis and analytical techniques, such as optical microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (µ-FTIR), and thermal analysis (DTA and TG), were used to investigate the ceramic material from multiple points of view. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the ceramics of the two communities. Putting together the data obtained from macroscopic and physico-chemical analyses helped in partially reconstructing ancient human behaviors related to the production and use of ceramic vessels. Electrical discharge grinding technology (EDGT) is an efficient and high precision method for machining RB-SiC ceramic materials. In this paper, the mechanism of material removal in EDGT is deeply analyzed, and the formation mechanism of surface topography under different material removal regimes affected by grinding depth is discussed. A three-dimensional heat conduction analysis model in the process of single pulse discharge was established, and the temperature field distribution in RB-SiC ceramic material under different discharge energy was obtained by numerical calculation. It is found that the simulated crater radius and depth increase with the increase of the discharge time, and the material removal amount gradually increases, but the growth rate gradually decreases. In order to give full play to the advantages of EDGT, the discharge energy and grinding depth were optimized according to the material removal mechanism. Finally, RB-SiC ceramic machining experiments were carried out using the optimized machining parameters, and a smooth surface with few discharge craters was obtained. It is found that the grinding scratches on the material surface are mainly plastic grinding, and the material surface roughness is 0.443 μm. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the utilization of 3D printing technology for the fabrication of ceramic shells in the context of investment casting. This study encompasses an exploration of various 3D printing techniques such as binder jetting technology and lithography-based ceramic manufacturing applied to ceramic materials tailored for investment casting applications for different materials. Comparative analyses between conventionally manufactured shells and those produced through 3D printing techniques are presented, shedding light on the potential advantages and challenges associated with the adoption of additive manufacturing in investment casting processes. The findings of this study reveal that both methods offer viable solutions for creating ceramic materials suitable as shells for investment casting. Both lithography-based ceramic manufacturing and binder jetting technology exhibit unique advantages and challenges. Lithography-based ceramic manufacturing demonstrates a superior surface finish and resolution, making it particularly suitable for intricate designs and fine details. In this paper, the design of different dielectric advanced ceramic materials of RF windows for dual-band K-band and Q-band Gyro-TWT has been described. The design methodology of quartz, magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) and sapphire dielectric windows of operating TE01 mode for K-band and Q-band Gyro-TWT has been discussed. The simulation result predicts that these windows can handle 100 kW output power and return loss −58.5 dB and insertion loss −0.02 dB. This paper presents the electrical design and thermal analysis of K-band and Q-band dual-band Gyro-TWT amplifier. In the thermal analysis, the maximum temperature has been obtained at the centre of the dielectric disc. The electro-mechanical analysis has also been carried out on the different dielectric windows to achieve stress and displacement. This paper presents an investigation into the water permeability of an all-oxide ceramic matrix composite. To determine the parameters and characterize the water permeability of the ceramic composite material, an experimental study was carried out in which a dedicated test rig was constructed and commissioned. A total of five different configurations of composite tubes were tested. They differed in fibre roving strength, winding angle, fibre bundle arrangement during winding, and matrix grain size distribution. To better understand the internal structure of the analysed ceramic matrix composite material, the experimental study used scanning electron microscopy for microstructure and porosity observation. The tested tubes will be used as liners in an oxy-combustion chamber in future studies. The experiments obtained new and interesting results regarding the water permeability of the ceramic matrix composite with different structural parameters. It was also observed that, as with some porous materials, the permeability of ceramic matrix composites decreases with time as more and more liquid is pressed through it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mathias Herrmann and Dr. Hagen Klemm from Fraunhofer IKTS. As a subserie of the dental ceramic material family, glass–ceramics are favored for their excellent aesthetic properties. The feasibility of current commercially available dental glass–ceramics applications has been proven, while the assurance and development of more functional properties for them are still being explored. Effective utilization of various modification mechanisms by adjusting the chemical composition and microstructure is essential to improve the mechanical properties, aesthetic properties, and other properties such as biocompatibility of dental restorative materials. Among them, the mechanical properties of restorations should take into account the mechanical properties of glass ceramics and the final restoration (restoration and tooth set) in the mechanical behavior. This paper provides an overview of the chemical composition design, classification of microstructure, property requirements, and strengthening methods applied to dental glass–ceramics, including ion exchange, chain effects, heat treatment modulation, and strengthening mechanisms. In addition, research on traditional hot pressing, subtractive manufacturing, and newly developed additive manufacturing in glass–ceramics are systematically presented. The outstanding thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of ceramic membranes have attracted increasing attention, offering advantages over polymer and metal counterparts. Exploring the specialized applications of ceramic membranes through various preparation methods poses a daunting challenge for contemporary researchers. Traditional preparation methods are essentially unable to meet the requirements of complex membrane structures. For instance, in ceramic fuel cell applications, cells composed of ceramic membrane materials exhibit high resistance and low conductivity, which seriously hinders the progress of new high-performance ceramic fuel cells. Therefore, it is necessary to improve preparation methods to improve the electrochemical performance of devices composed of ceramic membrane materials. In recent years, breakthroughs in various new processing technologies have propelled the performance of ceramic membrane devices. This paper will focus on the following aspects. Firstly, traditional preparation methods and advanced preparation methods of ceramic membrane materials will be discussed. Secondly, high-performance ceramic membrane materials prepared by different advanced preparation methods are introduced, and the electrochemical properties of the devices composed of ceramic membrane materials are elaborated in combination with different testing and characterization methods. The use of SiO2 ceramic materials is increasingly prevalent in both industrial and artisanal craftsmanship. These materials exhibit excellent mechanical properties, making them challenging to process, especially after firing. The paper explores the application of CO2 lasers for engraving ceramic materials, addressing challenges in traditional processing methods and offering insights into optimizing laser parameters for enhanced engraving performance. Through simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics software and experimental validations, the thermal interaction between CO2 lasers and SiO2 ceramic substrates is thoroughly investigated. Parameters such as power, scanning speed, pulse width, and repetition frequency are examined to understand their influence on engraving depth, resolution, and surface quality. The research compares continuous wave (CW) and pulsed modes, highlighting their advantages and limitations. The most suitable set of technological parameters is selected for experimentations on unfired and fired ceramic samples. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of CO2 lasers in engraving ceramics and their potential for various industrial applications. Additive manufacturing is very important due to its potential to build components and products using high-performance materials. The filament-based 3D printing of ceramics is investigated, revealing significant developments and advancements in ceramic material extrusion technology in recent years. Researchers employ several typologies of ceramics and binders to achieve fully dense products. The design of the filament and the necessary technological adaptations for 3D printing are fully investigated. From a material perspective, this paper reviews and analyzes the recent developments in additive manufacturing of material-extruded ceramics products, pointing out the performance and properties achieved with different material-binder combinations. Hydrogen energy is the clean energy with the most potential in the 21st century. The microchannel reactor for methanol steam reforming (MSR) is one of the effective ways to obtain hydrogen. Ceramic materials have the advantages of high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and high mechanical strength, and are ideal materials for preparing the catalyst support in microchannel reactors. However, the structure of ceramic materials is hard and brittle, and the feature size of microchannel is generally not more than 1 mm, which is difficult to process using traditional processing methods. Diamond wire saw processing technology is mainly used in the slicing of hard and brittle materials such as sapphire and silicon. In this paper, a microchannel with a periodic corrugated microstructure was fabricated on a ceramic plate using diamond wire sawing, and then as a catalyst support when used in a microreactor for MSR hydrogen production. The effects of wire speed and feed speed on the amplitude and period size of the periodic corrugated microstructure were studied using a single-factor experiment. The microchannel surface morphology was observed via SEM and a 3D confocal laser microscope under different processing parameters. The microchannel samples obtained under different processing parameters were supported by a multiple impregnation method. The loading strength of the catalyst was tested via a strong wind purge experiment. The experimental results show that the periodic corrugated microstructure can significantly enhance the load strength of the catalyst. The microchannel catalyst support with the periodic corrugated microstructure was put into the microreactor for a hydrogen production experiment, and a good hydrogen production effect was obtained. Improving fracture toughness, electrical conductivity, and biocompatibility has consistently presented challenges in the development of artificial bone replacement materials. This paper presents a new strategy for creating high-performance, multifunctional composite ceramic materials by doping graphene oxide (GO), which is known to induce osteoblast differentiation and enhance cell adhesion and proliferation into barium calcium zirconate titanate (BCZT) ceramics that already exhibit good mechanical properties, piezoelectric effects, and low cytotoxicity. Using fast hot-pressed sintering under vacuum conditions, (1 − x)(Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9)O3−xGO (0.2 mol% ≤ x ≤ 0.5 mol%) composite piezoelectric ceramics were successfully synthesized. Experimental results revealed that these composite ceramics exhibited high piezoelectric properties (d33 = 18 pC/N, kp = 62%) and microhardness (173.76 HV0.5), meeting the standards for artificial bone substitutes. Furthermore, the incorporation of graphene oxide significantly reduced the water contact angle and enhanced their wettability. Cell viability tests using Cell Counting Kit-8, alkaline phosphatase staining, and DAPI staining demonstrated that the GO/BCZT composite ceramics were non-cytotoxic and effectively promoted cell proliferation and growth, indicating excellent biocompatibility. Consequently, with their superior mechanical properties, piezoelectric performance, and biocompatibility, GO/BCZT composite ceramics show extensive potential for application in bone defect repair. Materials offering high energy density are currently desired to meet the increasing demand for energy storage applications, such as pulsed power devices, electric vehicles, high-frequency inverters, and so on. Particularly, ceramic-based dielectric materials have received significant attention for energy storage capacitor applications due to their outstanding properties of high power density, fast charge–discharge capabilities, and excellent temperature stability relative to batteries, electrochemical capacitors, and dielectric polymers. In this paper, we present fundamental concepts for energy storage in dielectrics, key parameters, and influence factors to enhance the energy storage performance, and we also summarize the recent progress of dielectrics, such as bulk ceramics (linear dielectrics, ferroelectrics, relaxor ferroelectrics, and anti-ferroelectrics), ceramic films, and multilayer ceramic capacitors. In addition, various strategies, such as chemical modification, grain refinement/microstructure, defect engineering, phase, local structure, domain evolution, layer thickness, stability, and electrical homogeneity, are focused on the structure–property relationship on the multiscale, which has been thoroughly addressed. Moreover, this review addresses the challenges and opportunities for future dielectric materials in energy storage capacitor applications. Overall, this review provides readers with a deeper understanding of the chemical composition, physical properties, and energy storage performance in this field of energy storage ceramic materials. The article presents some existing methods of producing silicon carbide, forms and types of silicon carbide, various compositions and formulations, production technology. The authors proposed a new method of processing silicon production waste - microsilica by spark plasma sintering with a carbon-containing reducing agent (soot) which produces a silicon carbide compound. Studies have shown that sintered silicon carbide has improved strength properties. In this paper, an iron–aluminide intermetallic compound with cerium addition was subjected to Vickers microhardness testing. A full range of Vickers microhardness loadings was applied: 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 500, and 1000 g. Tests were conducted in two areas: 0.5 mm under the surface of the rolled specimen and in the center. The aim was to find the optimal loading range that gives the true material microhardness, also deemed load-independent hardness, HLIH. The results suggest that in the surface area, the reverse indentation size effect (RISE) occurred, similar to ceramics and brittle materials, while in the center, indentation size effect (ISE) behavior was obtained, more similar to metals. This clearly indicated an optimal microhardness of over 500 g in the surface region and over 100 g in the central region of the specimen. Load dependencies were quantitatively described by Meyer's law, proportional specimen resistance (PSR), and the modified PSR model. The modified PSR model proved to be the most adequate. The study of the tribological behavior of the braking system in auto vehicles requires knowing the characteristics of the material in contact and, in the work process, the friction pair brake disc pads. Material structural analysis is necessary because the wear process depends both on the friction-pair chemical composition (brake disc pads) and on the work process parameters (pressing force, rotational speed, traffic conditions, etc.). The material of the brake discs is generally the same, gray cast iron, and the brake pads can be semimetallic (particles of steel, copper, brass, and graphite, all united with a special resin), organic materials (particles of rubber, glass, and Kevlar, all joined with the help of a resin), composite materials that contain different constituents, and ceramic materials (rarely have small copper particles). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the crystalline structure, tribological behavior (at friction and wear), and the mechanical properties of the materials of the brake disc–pad friction pair specific to the field through study and analysis. The paper presents a structural analysis of two pottery fragments belonging to the Hamangia phase III Ceamurlia culture, discovered in a settlement with several living levels on the northern shore of Lake Techirghiol, at the Minerva – Paloda Hill. From two ceramic fragments, fired in a reducing atmosphere, samples were taken to perform X-ray diffraction (XRD) and wavelength‐dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectra (WDXRF) analyzes to determine the crystalline structure and composition of the ceramic materials. Digital optical microscopy was used to observe the details of the fracture surfaces of these ceramic fragments. Feldspar ceramic materials are widely used as dental ceramic materials in the field of dental prosthetics. Studying their wear mechanisms is of great significance for the evaluation and prediction of dental ceramic life. This paper studies the wear mechanisms of feldspar ceramic materials from the aspects of wear performance experiments and finite element analysis. The high speed ring block friction and wear tester were used to conduct 3.5 x 105 times wear tests on the Sirona CEREC Blocks feldspathic ceramic block under the load of 10, 20, 30 N and 40 N. The changes of wear quality, wear rate, etc. with respect to load and wear times were obtained. According to the change curve, the wear process of feldspathic ceramics was divided into three stages and the wear surface morphology of each stage was observed. The Archard wear model was modified and improved, and based on this, the finite element simulation research was carried out through the UMESHMOTION subroutine in ABAQUS. Two node paths were selected to conduct simulation analysis on the adaptive mesh area of ALE for wear under four load sizes and 3.Ox 105 wear cycles. Compared with the experimental wear depths, the maximum error under 10N load was 12.18%, and the minimum error under 30 N load was 8.64%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By examining the X-ray powder diffraction data, the microstructure of the BaTiO3 ceramic modified by alkaline earth (AE) metals was characterized. Following profile fitting, the X-ray powder diffraction data of the powder mixtures were analyzed to estimate and evaluate the structural changes of the single-phase AE-modified BaTiO3. Each compound, as well as several polymorphic versions of the same compound, had a unique diffraction pattern, which was a coded representation of the crystal structure. The sole requirement for deciphering this data was the generation of exact data in order to enable phase identification, measurements of lattice parameters, atomic positions, etc. This work compares the various structural characteristics of void species nanostructure using X-ray diffraction with respect to the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) of different samples. For decades, experts have paid considerable scientific and technological attention to the possibility of recycling waste that has reached nature as a result of mining activities related to natural stone, extracting metal or using foreign matter to recover natural environments. Several authors have shown that many of these types of waste can be vitrified or synthesised with an appropriately designed composition, not just to decrease their size but (as is more interesting from a financial point of view) to produce a wide range of glassy and/or ceramic materials that can have uses in industry and, crucially, in the construction sector (building and public works). In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the state of the art, defining the different types of materials and their uses in order to decisively contribute to the circular economy and the zero-waste approach. Wear is the leading cause of nozzle failure. The durability of the nozzle is affected by the material it is made from. Traditional materials are ceramics, stainless steel, brass, and polymers. One of the possible ways to improve the wear resistance of polymer nozzles is through the incorporation of dispersed fillers into them. This paper presents the results of testing polymer composites for their chemical resistance to pesticides, examining the effects of different types and amounts of fillers on the chemical and abrasion resistance. When silicon carbide was used as a filler, the strength increased by 30.2%. The experiments on chemical resistance to pesticides revealed that the nature, shape, and volume content of filler particles do not significantly affect the resistance of the compounds obtained. Tests on hydro-abrasive wear have shown that graphite and silicon carbide are effective fillers capable of reducing wear by up to 7.5 times. Based on previous research, it is recommended to use a composite compound with 15% volume of silicon carbide for nozzle manufacturing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Si3N4 ceramic materials have great potential in the field of insulation in SF6 gas ultra-high-voltage transmission and transformation equipment due to their excellent insulation performance and thermal stability. In this paper, Y2O3-Al2O3 was used as a sintering aid to prepare high-density (>99%) Si3N4 ceramics through two-step pressureless liquid-phase sintering, and the mechanism of the influence of Y2O3-Al2O3 addition on the microstructure and electrical properties of Si3N4 ceramics was studied. The results showed that increasing the sintering aid content could increase the grain size of Si3N4 ceramics, while increasing the Y2O3 ratio could refine the grain size. When Y2O3-Al2O3 addition was 8% and the ratio was 5:3, the room temperature volume resistivity of Si3N4 ceramics was the highest, 7.33 × 1014 Ω·m, and the volume resistivity was the most stable when the sintering aid content was 12%. The internal carrier migration type of Si3N4 ceramics was mainly ion conduction, mainly along the grain boundaries. The temperature stability of the resistivity of Si3N4 ceramics could be improved by doping with Y3+ functional ions to reduce the potential barrier conductivity level and refine the grain size to improve the conduction path. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of Si3N4 ceramics were mainly affected by interface polarization. They gradually increased with the increase in sintering aid addition. Temperature had little effect on dielectric constant and dielectric loss in the range of 20–80 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the thermodynamic performance of state-of-the-art silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix composite (SiCf/SiC)-bladed gas turbines (GTs) are presented. Two different GT power systems are comparatively considered namely; the basic gas turbine (BGT) cycle and the intercooled gas turbine cycle (ICGT). The work analyzes the thermodynamic advantages of adoption of ceramic matrix composite turbine blades to existing GTs featuring traditional single-crystal superalloy-blades. Mathematical models and governing equations pertaining to the interdependent performance parameters namely: blade coolant flow rates, 1st law, and 2nd law thermodynamic efficiencies, and component exergy destruction were converted into computer codes. It was observed that SiCf/SiC-bladed GTs will require 84–85% lesser blade coolant at 1900 K leading to superior thermodynamic performance. The enhancement in the 1st law efficiency and 2nd law efficiency of the SiCf/SiC-bladed BGT systems are observed to be 3% compared to conventional superalloy-bladed systems. Similarly, enhancement in the 1st law efficiency and the 2nd law efficiency of the SiCf/SiC-bladed ICGT systems are observed to be 3%. The SiCf/SiC-bladed GT systems are found to be superior to the single-crystal superalloy-bladed GT as they exhibit lower component exergy destruction. The performance maps suggest that replacing the existing single-crystal superalloy blades GTs with the novel ceramic matrix composite blades would exhibit superior thermodynamic performance even when GT firing temperatures are more than 1800 K. The demand for high-precision and high-efficient machining of high-performance materials and components has increased in various industries such as optical, automotive, communication, life sciences, and medical sciences. Certain difficult-to-machine materials can be reliably machined using deterministic precision cutting processes. However, hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, carbides, hardened steel molds, glassy materials, or semiconductor materials, require precision abrasive technologies with super abrasives like diamond, cBN, or new tool materials for machining. However, machining high-precision components and their molds/dies using abrasive processes is considerably more difficult due to their complex and non-deterministic nature and textured surfaces. Furthermore, high-energy processes such as laser technology can assist abrasive technologies in ensuring higher precision and efficiency. Precision grinding and polishing processes are primarily used to generate high-quality and functional components, typically made of difficult-to-machine materials. Thus, the surface quality achievable by precision grinding and polishing processes becomes more important for reducing machining time and costs. This special issue features 10 papers on the most recent advances in precision abrasive technologies. This paper aims to compare two ceramic materials available for additive manufacturing (AM) processes—vat photopolymerization (VPP) and material extrusion (MEX)—that result in fully ceramic parts after proper heat treatment. The analysis points out the most significant differences between the structural and mechanical properties and the potential application of each AM technology. The research revealed different behaviors for the specimens obtained via the two mentioned technologies. In the case of MEX, the specimens exhibited similar microstructures before and after heat treatment. The sintering process did not affect the shape of the grains, only their size. For the VPP specimens, directly after the manufacturing process, irregular grain shapes were registered, but after the sintering process, the grains fused, forming a solid structure that made it impossible to outline individual grains and measure their size. The highest compression strength was 168 MPa for the MEX specimens and 81 MPa for the VPP specimens. While the VPP specimens had half the compression strength, the results for the VPP specimens were significantly more repeatable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a comparative analysis of structural materials used in the construction of high-pressure pumps delivery sections was carried out. The focus was on a comparison of the ceramic materials such as corundum (alumina, Al2O3) and silicon carbide (solid-state sintered) -- SSiC with bearing alloy steel 100Cr6, that is the most common material used to make pistons and cylinders of the delivery section of common rail injection pumps. Simulations performed using the finite element method have proven that ceramic materials have a number of advantages and could therefore be an interesting substitute for materials traditionally used in this area. It is known that ceramic–polymer composite materials can be used to manufacture spherical bodies in the category of balls. Since balls are frequently subjected to compression loads, the paper presents some research results on the compression behavior of balls made of ceramic composite materials with a polymer matrix. The mathematical model of the pressure variation inside the balls highlights the existence of maximum values in the areas of contact with other parts. Experimental research was carried out on balls with a diameter of 20 mm, manufactured by 3D printing from four ceramic–polymer composite materials with a polymer matrix: pottery clay, terracotta, concrete, and granite. The same ceramic–polymer composite material was used, but different dyes were added to it. A gravimetric analysis revealed similar behavior of the four materials upon controlled heating. Through the mathematical processing of the experimental results obtained by compression tests, empirical mathematical models of the power-type function type were determined. These models highlight the influence exerted by different factors on the force at which the initiation of cracks in the ball materials occurs. The decisive influence of the infill factor on the size of the force at which the cracking of the balls begins was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a fast and flexible microfabrication method for thermal conductivity gas sensors useful in high-temperature applications. The key parts of the sensor, the microheater and the package, were fabricated from glass-coated platinum wire and the combination of laser micromilling (ablation) of already-sintered monolithic ceramic materials and thick-film screen-printing technologies. The final thermal conductivity gas sensor was fabricated in the form of a complete MEMS device in a metal ceramic package, which could be used as a compact miniaturized surface-mounted device for soldering to standard PCB. Functional test results of the manufactured sensor are presented, demonstrating their full suitability for gas sensing applications and indicating that the obtained parameters are at a level comparable to those of standard industrially produced sensors. The results of the design and optimization principles of applied methods are discussed with regard to possible wider applications in thermal gas sensor prototyping in the future. The advantage of the developed sensors is their ability to operate in air environments under high temperatures of 900 °C and above. The sensor element material and package metallization were insensitive to oxidation compared with classical sensor-solution-based metal–glass packages and silicone MEMS membranes, which exhibit mechanical stress at temperatures above 700 °C. The preparation of dense single-phase boride ceramics has always been a challenge. In this paper, single-phase W 2 B 5 ceramic with excellent performance was successfully prepared using W 2 B 5 powder and SPS-HF technology. Under the sintering condition of 1800 °C and 50 MPa, a nearly dense W 2 B 5 ceramic material with excellent mechanical properties was obtained. The relative density of the as-sintered W 2 B 5 ceramic achieved 96.72 % without any sintering additive. Additionally, the Vickers hardness, fracture toughness as well as bending strength were 30 GPa (9.8 N), 5.39 MPa·m1/2 and 522.7 MPa, respectively. The outstanding hardness and bending strength of W 2 B 5 ceramic could be attributed to its monophase W 2 B 5 structure and high densification degree. The primary fracture mode of W 2 B 5 ceramic was transgranular fracture, and the toughening mechanisms included crack deflection, crack bridging, and crack branching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the biomedical field, the commonly used metal implant materials are prone to "stress shielding" because of their mechanical properties and elastic modulus are very different from human bone. The mechanical properties of metal materials are often difficult to maintain in corrosive media and release harmful ions. Nor can it reliably establish a sufficient combination with human bones, resulting in a service life that does not reach the desired goal. Researchers in this field propose to combine the superior mechanical properties of metals with bioactive materials, such as bioactive ceramics and the emerging ferrous glass, and achieve this through surface modification techniques. The laser cladding technique is of great interest for its low dilution rate, high bond strength and fine organisation. Zirconium oxide(ZrO2) is an important ceramic material characterized by a wide optical bandgap, low optical losses, high dielectric constant, excellent physical and structural properties, high coefficient of thermal expansion and chemical stability. This paper reports the synthesis of ZrO2 nanoparticles by the sol–gel method using ZrO(NO3)2 as the zirconium precursor and ammonia solution (25%) as the precipitating agent. The pH value of the sol and the annealing temperature strongly influence the morphology and size of nanoparticles. In the present work, the sol pH was varied from 8 to 11 and the nanoparticles obtained were annealed in the temperature range of 400–700°C. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. The results demonstrate that the stable t-ZrO2 phase starts appearing above 400°C, with nanoparticle size varying in the range of 15–22 nm. The optimal size of ZrO2 nanoparticles (15.65 nm) was obtained at a pH value of 9 and an annealing temperature of 500°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O3‐based antiferroelectric ceramics have excellent energy storage performance(more than 90% efficiency), which make them have great application advantages in the field of ceramic capacitors. However, the sintering temperature of (Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O3‐based antiferroelectric ceramics is generally above 1250 °C, which limits application as a material for ceramic capacitors. Cu inner electrode has a low co‐firing temperature and high conductivity and a low cost price, making it more competitive in the field of ceramic capacitor inner electrode. Therefore, the first step is to reduce the sintering temperature of (Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O3‐based ceramics to below 1000 °C(co‐firing temperature with Cu inner electrode), which is the key and difficult point. In this paper, Pb0.94La0.02Sr0.04(Zr0.45Sn0.47Ti0.08)0.995O3(PLSZST) antiferroelectric ceramics are doped with ZnO, which effectively reduce the sintering temperature. Among them, PLSZST‐1 wt% ZnO is sintered at an ultra‐low sintering temperature (TSintering = 940 °C), which is 330 °C lower than that of PLSZST(TSintering = 1270 °C) without doping ZnO. At the same time, PLSZST‐1 wt%ZnO obtain a recoverable energy density of 4.26J cm−3 and an energy efficiency of 95.5% at 230 kV cm−1. The pulse discharge energy density (Wdis = 3.92 J cm−3) and discharge time (t0.9 = 351 ns) are obtained at 220 kV cm−1, and the current density (CD = 1338A cm−2) and power density (PD = 134MW cm−3) are obtained at 200 kV cm−1.
