Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between having visited the theatre/cinema and an arts exhibition during the past year and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and other-cause mortality. Methods: The 2008 public health postal survey in Scania, Sweden, was distributed to a stratified random sample of the adult population (18–80 years old). The participation rate was 54.1%, and 25,420 participants were included in the present study. The baseline 2008 survey data were linked to cause-of-death register data to create a prospective cohort with 8.3-year follow-up. Associations between visit to the theatre/cinema, visit to an arts exhibition and mortality were investigated in survival (Cox) regression models. Results: Just over a quarter (26.5%) had visited both the theatre/cinema and an arts exhibition during the past year, 36.6% only the theatre/cinema, 4.9% only an arts exhibition and 32% neither of the two. Not visiting the theatre/cinema during the past year was associated with higher all-cause and CVD mortality. Not visiting an arts exhibition was associated with higher all-cause and other-cause mortality. The combination of having visited neither the theatre/cinema nor an arts exhibition during the past year was associated with higher all-cause, CVD and other-cause mortality. Conclusions: There is an association between attending arts and culture activities and a reduced risk of CVD and other-cause mortality but not cancer mortality, although model imperfections are possible. Background: This study explored the association of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with cancer mortality risk in individuals with or without a history of cancer, to better understand the interplay between CVD and cancer outcomes. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018, a retrospective cohort analysis was conducted. This analysis accounted for the survey's complex design to ensure national representativeness. The association of CVD with cancer mortality was assessed through multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Results: The present study included 59,653 participants, of whom 54,095 did not have cancer and 5558 had a history of cancer. In individuals without cancer, heart failure (HF) was associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.09–1.69; P = 0.005). In participants with cancer, HF correlated with a higher risk of mortality from cancer (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.32–2.34; P < 0.001). Diabetes (DM), hypertension (HBP) and coronary heart disease (CHD) were not significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer. Significant differences were observed in the interaction between cancer and CHD (HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.53–0.87; P = 0.002). For cancer and HBP, a similar trend was noted (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.62–0.91; P = 0.003). No significant differences were found in interactions between HF, DM and cancer. Conclusions: HF was associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer, regardless of cancer history, while HBP, CHD and DM showed no significant association. Limited information is available on potential predictive value of environmental chemicals for mortality. Our study aimed to investigate the associations between 43 of 8 classes representative environmental chemicals in serum/urine and mortality, and further develop the interpretable machine learning models associated with environmental chemicals to predict mortality. A total of 1602 participants were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). During 154,646 person-months of follow-up, 127 deaths occurred. We found that machine learning showed promise in predicting mortality. CoxPH was selected as the optimal model for predicting all-cause mortality with time-dependent AUROC of 0.953 (95%CI: 0.951–0.955). Coxnet was the best model for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality with time-dependent AUROCs of 0.935 (95%CI: 0.933–0.936) and 0.850 (95%CI: 0.844–0.857). Based on clinical variables, adding environmental chemicals could enhance the predictive ability of cancer mortality (P < 0.05). Some environmental chemicals contributed more to the models than traditional clinical variables. Combined the results of association and prediction models by interpretable machine learning analyses, we found urinary methyl paraben (MP) and urinary 2-napthol (2-NAP) were negatively associated with all-cause mortality, while serum cadmium (Cd) was positively associated with all-cause mortality. Frailty is a state of heightened vulnerability to stress, whether from within the body or external factors. We aim to assess the prognostic value of the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII) in middle-aged and older frail adults. We used data from the 2003–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) linked to the 2019 National Death Index (NDI) to study mortality. Cox proportional hazards model and two-piecewise Cox proportional hazards model were used to elucidate the nonlinear relationship between SII level and mortality. Our study included 7,446 frail patients (mean age 65.6) with 2,524 deaths (726 from cardiovascular disease and 458 from cancer) over 49,565 person-years. Elevated SII levels were associated with an increased risk of all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related and cancer-related mortality, even after adjusting for potential confounders (adjusted HR (95 % CI) = 1.35 (1.25, 1.46), 1.42 (1.22, 1.65) and 1.26 (1.05, 1.51), respectively). Moreover, a U-shaped correlation was discerned between SII levels and the risks of all-cause and cancer-related mortality, with respective thresholds identified at 334.96 and 348.28. Our findings reveal SII levels positively correlate with frailty, all-cause mortality, CVD-related mortality, and cancer-related mortality in middle-aged and elderly frail individuals in the U.S. The critical thresholds for SII index were 334.96 for all-cause mortality and 348.28 for cancer-related mortality. This study underscores the potential benefits of maintaining a certain low level of SII to effectively mitigate the incidence of frailty and mortality among frail patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
