Various contents of carbon fibers (CFs) and potassium titanate whiskers (PTWs) were added to an Fe-based impregnated diamond bit (IDB) matrix to enhance its adaptability to percussive–rotary drilling. A series of mechanical tests were conducted successively to find the effects of the reinforcing materials on the properties of the Fe-based IDB samples. Then, the fracture surfaces of the samples were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and the worn surfaces and abrasive debris of the samples were analyzed using a laser scanning confocal microscope and SEM. The results show that both the CF and PTW can effectively improve the hardness and bending strength of an Fe-based IDB matrix, and those parameters reached their maximum values at the additive amount of 1 wt%. However, the CF had a better enhancement effect than the PTW. Furthermore, the CF improved the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix, with a minimum wear rate of 2.38 g/min at the additive amount of 2 wt%. However, the PTW continuously weakened the impact wear resistance of the IDB matrix with increases in its content. Moreover, the morphologies of the worn surfaces indicated that the minimum roughness of the CF-reinforced IDB matrix decreased significantly to as low as 4.91 μm, which was 46.16% lower than that without CF, whereas the minimum roughness of the PTW-reinforced samples decreased by 11.31%. Meanwhile, the abrasive debris of the CF-reinforced samples was more uniform and continuous compared to that of the PTW-reinforced samples. Overall, the appropriate addition of CF or PTWs can enhance the mechanical properties of Fe-based IDB matrices, which can be used on different formations based on their impact wear resistance. Thin-walled coilable composite shells have been successfully used in deployable space payloads due to their high storage efficiency and stiffness-to-weight ratio. However, in real-life applications the deployable composite shells requiring repeatable coiling up and deployment are easy to be damaged, and their damage or failure behaviors due to large deformations has been rarely studied. This paper aims to investigate their damage and failure behaviors during the snap through, equal-sense and opposite-sense coiling up. First, multiscale models are established to compute the mechanical properties of plain-woven fabrics and unidirectional prepregs with consideration of stiffness reduction of the composites. Then, damages of each ply within the thin-walled shell are studied during snap through and coiling up. Simultaneously, effects of hub diameter on the damage of the thin-walled shell were investigated, followed by experimental verification using strain gauges and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Simulation and experimental results show that the dominated damage of the thin-walled shell is failure of matrix. The SEMs of the edge damaged show failures of both resin and carbon fibers. Tensile damages of matrix can be relieved as the increment of the hub diameter, and no obvious failure is observed at the hub diameter of 50 mm. In this present study, the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method was used to fabricate the composites. Before three-dimensional (3D) printing, samples were designed according to the ASTM D256, D790 and D3039 standards for impact, flexural and tensile tests, respectively, using Onshape software before conversion to an STL file format. Afterward, the digital file was sliced with infill densities of 60%, 80%, and 100%. The composite samples contained chopped carbon fiber (cCF) and poly lactic acid (PLA), as reinforcement and matrix, respectively. The cCF/PLA (simply called cCFP) filaments were printed into various cCFP composite (cCFPC) samples, using a Viper Share bot 3D machine with different infill densities before the aforementioned mechanical testing. The tensile strength of cCFP were obtained as 25.9MPa, 26.9MPa and 34.75MPa for 60%, 80% and 100% infill density cCFP samples, respectively. Similarly, the flexural strength of cCFP were obtained as 11.8MPa, 12.55MPa and 18.4MPa and impact strength was 47.48kJ/m2, 48.45kJ/m2 and 48.96kJ/m2 for 60%, 80% and 100% infill density cCFP samples, respectively. The fractured/tested samples were examined and analyzed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate the presence of fiber and void in the tensile sample. Based on the experimental results, it was evident that a high infill density of 100% with the highest reinforcement exhibited maximum impact strength, tensile and flexural strengths and moduli when compared with other lower carbon content of cCFPC samples. Therefore, the optimal 3D-printed cCFPC sample could be used for engineering application to benefit from properties of the polymer matrix composite materials and possibilities through additive manufacturing (AM). To achieve better interfacial adherence of carbon fibers to the epoxy resin, the graphene modified with ammonia and 3-Glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was utilized to modify the epoxy resin. Subsequently, a simple two-step method of wet impregnation and the thermoforming process was employed to fabricate the CF/graphene-modified epoxy (CF/EG/EP) composites. The interfacial properties of CF/EP composites were studied using microdroplet debonding and short-beam shear tests on modified graphene (MEG). It is shown that the incorporation of GPTMS-modified graphene into the CF/EP composites strengthened the interfacial and bending properties of CF and matrix, resulting in a 12.5 % growth in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and 22.5 % growth in flexural strength of the CF/EP composites, respectively. Meanwhile, scanning electron microscope images confirmed the effectiveness of the GPTMS-modified graphene in improving the interfacial compatibility and adhesion of CF/EP composites. Geological hazards of sand layers pose a serious threat to engineering safety. Grouting reinforcement technology is widely used in such conditions due to its convenience, economy, and effectiveness. To explore the reinforcement effect of carbon fiber (CF) modified cement-based grouting materials on sand layers, grouting solidified bodies (GSB) with CF contents of 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% are selected for Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) impact tests, scanning electron microscope (SEM) scanning, and numerical simulation experiments. The mechanical properties of specimens under dynamic impact conditions and the reinforcement mechanism of CF are studied. Results show that GSB is a strain-rate-dependent material. With the increase of impact rate, peak stress, incident energy, transmitted energy, and dissipated energy of specimens gradually increase, while the integrity of specimens decreases. The CF content remarkably affects the mechanical properties of specimens. When the impact rate is constant, with the increase of CF content, the peak stress and transmitted energy of specimens show a decreasing–increasing– decreasing trend, and the performance of CF-1.0% specimens is optimal. The cement matrix is the main energy storage and release medium, accounting for 97.66% of the energy. When damaged, the cement matrix is mainly fractured. At the microcrack tip, CF influences the direction of crack propagation, reducing the radius of crack propagation, and the main failure mode of CF is debonding. CF can substantially improve the mechanical properties of specimens and reduce the number of cracks. Compared with CF-0.0%-cementitious material (CM) specimens, the peak stress of CF-1.0%-CM specimens is increased by 19.98%. The magnitude of CF force is related to the angle between crack and CF. As the angle increases from 0° to 90°, the CF force gradually increases, reaching the maximum at 90°, with an increase of 133.82%. At this angle, the anti-cracking effect of CF is most substantial. The surface topography and interface characteristics play a significant role in determining the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. These features are primarily influenced by the surface chemical structures and their interactions with the matrix resin. Here, we developed a rigid-flexible coating consisting of polyetheramine (PEA) and polydopamine (PDA) on the fiber surface to control the interface and improve the mechanical properties of CFRPs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) results validated the successful introduction of polymeric chains and fiber surface characteristics including rough surfaces, slim polymer layers and uniform dots were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Contact angle tests indicate that the functionalized coating noticeably enhances the interaction force between carbon fibers, promoting improved wettability by the matrix resin. The bending and interlaminar shear strength of CFRP prepared by functional carbon fiber are increased by 45.76 % and 47.63 %, respectively. Large-tow carbon fiber (LCF) meets the low-cost requirements of modern industry. However, due to the large and dense number of monofilaments, there are problems with uneven and insufficient infiltration during material preparation. The permeability of large-tow carbon fibers can be used as a two-scale expression of resin flow during infiltration, making it an important factor to consider. This paper provides support for the study of pore formation. A two-dimensional model of randomly bundled large-filament carbon fibers is generated based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) maps. Microstructure size parameters are obtained, and a semi-analytical model of the transverse permeability of large-filament-bundled carbon fibers is established. Permeability values are then obtained. The analysis shows that the monofilaments in the tow are arranged randomly, and their periodic arrangement cannot be used to calculate permeability. Additionally, the number of monofilaments in a carbon fiber tow of the same volume fraction affects the permeability of the tow. Delamination due to an inferior adhesion between reinforcement material and matrix in carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) composites is a crucial problem to be solved. To this end, this study aims to overcome poor wettability between reinforcing phase, i.e., carbon fiber (CF), and thermoplastic matrix, i.e., polyetherether ketone (PEEK). Herein, CF's surface was tailored by application of different polymeric sizing agents which have different chemical structures. Morphology and topology analyses were performed by Scanning Electron Microscope and 3D laser scanning, respectively. Later, a variety of wettability results were obtained by the sessile drop method used in Contact Angle (CA) measurements for CFs throughout application of each sizing agent applied by dip coating. Sizing materials were designed such that the chemical structure of CF's surface could exhibit compatibility with the matrix itself. Consequently, complete wettability (CA: 0°) was achieved for CFs sized by HPEEK (CF/hydroxylated PEEK (HPEEK)) and the surface free energy (SFE) of CF was enhanced from 5.43 to 72.8 mJ/m2 while the SFE of the PEEK matrix is 40.1 mJ/m2. Moreover, sizing by HPEEK improved the average surface roughness of CF by 32% which enables optimized adhesion. Afterward, repetitive tensile tests were carried out to observe effects of improved interfacial interlocking on the mechanical properties of the final CFRTP composite. Stress–strain curves revealed that the tensile strength of CFRTP improved from 473 to 508 MPa through the sizing of CF by HPEEK whereas pristine PEEK has a much smaller tensile strength (98 MPa) than the aforementioned CF-reinforced composites. The sizing of carbon fiber's surface by HPEEK resulted in an enhanced adhesion with the PEEK matrix. Since the chemical structure and physical properties of sizing agent and matrix are compatible, potential debonding between them was eliminated. To meet the lightweight production requirements of automobiles and achieve high strength, reinforced thermoplastic composite materials are gradually replacing metal materials. Injection molding is the preferred manufacturing method to enable the production of complex‐shaped parts, facilitate production, and reduce costs. In this study, carbon fiber (CF) was added to the commonly used resin‐reinforcing material, polyamide (nylon) PA6, to create a CF‐reinforced thermoplastic composite (polyamide 6 [PA6]/CF) that was welded using injection molding. This study not only investigates the impact of different welding conditions on shear strength but also discusses the sequence of welding. Achieving 85% of the shear strength of the PA6 base material under ideal circumstances. The CF distribution and reinforcement mechanism were analyzed by observing the connection interface and cross section using a polarizing microscope and a scanning electron microscope. When PA6/CF was used as the secondary molded body, the welding results were better. The addition of CF had a significant strengthening effect on the strength of the PA6 injection welding. Highlights: Carbon fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic composite materials were prepared, and welding with PA6 was achieved using the injection molding method.The optimal welding parameters were determined by varying the mold, injection speed, injection temperature, and order of injection. To overcome the dependence of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoset composites (CCFRTCs) on molds during the curing, a thermoset continuous fiber prepreg filament and thermoplastic filament alternate printing method was proposed. CCFRTCs with thin thermoplastic shells were prepared based on the method, and the confinement of thermoplastic shells enabled the mold‐less curing of CCFRTCs. The influence of key curing process parameters on the flexural properties of the specimens was systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that the flexural properties of the prepared composites were correlated positively with the vacuum degree and showed a tendency of first increasing and then decreasing with the increasement of impregnation time and curing temperature. Through x‐ray computed tomography (CT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, the effect of key curing process parameters on the flexural properties of the CCFRTCs was clarified. Under the guidance of suitable curing process parameters, the flexural strength and modulus of the composite reached 482.89 MPa and 35.11 GPa, which were significantly better than most existing 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Finally, complex components were prepared to verify the feasibility and versatility of the technique. Cobalt-based oxide CuCo 2 O 4 -loaded CuCo 2 O 4 /carbon felt (CF) composite cathodes were synthesized by hydrothermal deposition of a precursor of Cu/Fe oxides on CF followed by roasting in air. The material serves both catalytic and cathodic dual functions in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process. Through XRD (X-ray diffraction), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscope), and catalytic experiments, it was concluded that CuCo 2 O 4 loading was successful and the highest hydrophilic 180-CuCo 2 O 4 /CF was obtained by varying the hydrothermal temperature without destroying the original structure. 180-CuCo 2 O 4 /CF accomplished 98.03 % degradation in 60 min, and it was found to maintain high degradation capacity in the pH 3 ∼ 9 range in experiments where the experimental parameters were varied. Compared to monometallic oxides, Cu and Co dual active centers are integrated in CuCo 2 O 4 , giving it diverse redox properties and oxidation states. This paper investigates the fundamental mechanical properties of tension, bending, shear, and torsion for unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. First, the mechanical properties of tension, bending, shear, and torsion for the unidirectional CFRP plates are tested, and the test results of relevant mechanical parameters are statistically analyzed. Secondly, the failure modes and damage evolution processes are analyzed by observing the failure surface using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Subsequently, the probabilistic characteristics of the statistical results for the mechanical parameters are analyzed. The parameter fitting is performed using the Normal, Log-normal, and Weibull distributions for goodness-of-fit analysis, respectively.
