In this paper, the tribological characteristics of an oil-soluble magnetic fluid additive under mixed lubrication are studied by experiments and numerical simulation. [bmim][FeCl4] is dissolved in CF10W-40 lubricating oil as a magnetic liquid additive, and its friction coefficient is tested by a point contact friction tester at different temperatures, rotational speeds and magnetic field intensities. The transition condition of lubrication state is obtained through analyzing the Stribeck curves based on the experiments, and the strength model of boundary film is established accordingly. A mixed lubrication model is established by substituting the boundary film strength model and the surface roughness model into the hydrodynamic lubrication model based on Reynolds equation. The results show that the magnetic solution as an additive can obviously reduce friction and wear, and the effect is more obvious under the condition of magnetic field. The boundary film strength model can accurately reflect the transition characteristics of lubrication state in the presence of boundary film, and the mixed lubrication model based on boundary film strength model can more precisely reflect the tribological characteristics of friction pairs, so this study provides a new theoretical method for the related research on the influence of boundary film on lubrication characteristics. The variation of friction coefficient (μ) of model wine and model saliva mixtures with entrainment speed (VR) on simulated oral surfaces was evaluated by oral tribology. Combined with techniques of dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), rheometer, and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM‐D), the correlation between characteristics of the model wine and model saliva mixtures (particle size and morphology, suspension viscosity, adsorption film thickness, and viscoelasticity) and the oral lubrication loss was established. The results showed that the higher the concentration of tannin in the model wine, the larger the size of the complexes with the model saliva, and the higher the thickness, viscoelasticity, and roughness of the adsorption film formed, which resulted in the increase of friction coefficient in the boundary lubrication regime. Different from previous results, it is found that the maximum value of the friction coefficient (μmax) in the boundary regime has the best positive correlation with the astringency perception intensity of the model wine accordingly. Peristaltic motions are used in a variety of industrial and real-world problems such as pumping mixture with such a high solid content from the mining sector, biogases, sewers facilities, food flow through the gastrointestinal system, urinary tract, and fallopian tube of human females where extremely abrasive, gritty, and viscous fluids are present. The goal of this theoretical study is to examine the impact of the lubricated walls on the peristaltic transport of a viscous fluid in an asymmetric medium. The interfacial condition is derived under the assumptions of thin film lubrication and long wavelength approximation. The theory of a dynamical system is utilized to examine the lubrication effects on the position and bifurcation of stagnation points in the flow. For this, three flow distributions, backward flow, trapping, and augmented flow, are discussed. The obtained system of equations is solved numerically by the shooting method based on Newton–Raphson root-finding algorithm in Mathematica. The prime findings for the velocity profile, pressure increase, trapping, and reflux criteria are illustrated through graphs. Bifurcation occurs earlier by increasing the influence of lubrication. The trapping area diminishes and the augmented flow section expands with the lubrication parameter. This will be useful for medical engineering, industrial and physiological systems. A fully coupled FE model for mixed EHL of finite line contacts is proposed, integrating all of the governing equations into a monolithic system. The solution reveals the fully coupled model achieves 5% higher accuracy and 50% greater efficiency compared to the weakly coupled one. Additionally, there is evidence to support the assertion that profiling contributes to the mitigation of surface roughness contact. Logarithmic profiling can increase the minimum film thickness by a factor of 30, resulting in a reduction of up to 64.6% in the maximum asperity contact pressure, and thus, the boundary friction force is decreased by more than 19%, under heavy-load low-velocity condition. This contributes to the reduction of abrasive wear. • A fully coupled FE model for the mixed EHL analysis of finite line contacts is developed. • Lubrication of mixed EHL film with straight, dub-off, and log profiles under different loads and velocities is analysed. • Influences of profiling on asperity contact and friction force are discussed and revealed. • A logarithmic profile has the potential to enhance the boundary lubrication condition at the free-end. Achieving macroscale superlubricity on engineering steel by utilizing aqueous green lubricants has gained growing interest, given its substantial potential to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. However, maintaining superlubricity under diverse sliding conditions over a prolonged duration is a major obstacle for real-scale applications. Herein, we report that a robust and durable tribofilm enabled by a unique lubrication mechanism based on carboxylated graphene quantum dots (CGQDs) in aqueous glycerol triggers macroscale superlubricity in self-mated steel contacts. A dedicated intermittent test was designed to show the superlubricity's robustness and the ability of the tribofilm to adapt to a variety of relevant sliding conditions. Moreover, the boundary film provides an average coefficient of friction of around 0.007 and up to 69 % wear reduction (compared to the base lubricant), resulting in the maintenance of superlubricity at a real final contact pressure of 123 MPa, which increases the upper limit of the contact pressure compared to current aqueous-lubricated steel contacts. The new superlubricity mechanism was enabled by the chemical adsorption of the CGQDs onto the worn metal surface, coupled with the tribo-induced structural degradation and transformation of the CGQDs into layered graphitic structures that generate an adaptable low-shear interface. This work provides new insights into the role of chemical adsorption and structural transformation of CGQDs in achieving superlubricity and is an important step forward for implementing energy-efficient and green lubrication technologies for industrial applications. Gallium-based liquid metal (GLM) has excellent extreme-pressure properties, but at low sliding speeds, it is typically in a boundary or mixed lubrication, causing poorer properties compared to traditional lubricants. In this paper, GLM/P composite lubricants composed of GLM particles and polydimethylsiloxane are prepared. Under a maximum-Hertz-stress of 0.69 GPa, GLM/P2–30% (viscosity of 1260 mPa∙s) can enter the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime at 0.2 m/s, has good EHL properties (friction coefficient of 0.06, wear rate in the order of 10−9 mm3/N·m). Meanwhile, it has high extreme-pressure properties (P B of 2300 N). The EHL film is formed mainly by polydimethylsiloxane, while GLM particles increase the thermal conductivity of lubricant and can be adsorbed on the frictional interfaces, thereby improving the EHL properties. This work investigates the friction and wear reduction effects of adding functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) to a fully formulated engine oil. Friction tests using a continuous sliding/rolling ball-on-disk tribometer showed that 0.2 wt% GNP oil reduced friction by up to 28% and 11% in the boundary and elastohydrodynamic lubrication regimes, respectively. The disk tested with GNP oil also exhibited lower wear and evidence of carbon tribofilm formation. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the mechanical stresses in the tribological tests altered the graphene morphology. Furthermore, the study evaluated the literature mechanisms for graphene-induced friction and wear reduction, and concluded that the interplay between interlaminar shearing and protective film formation mechanisms was the most plausible explanation for the obtained results.
