The use of Latin origin terms, relevant for sample characterization modalities, is described with a focus on samples under controlled conditions, samples within devices, and samples during physico-chemical evolution. The terms in vitro, in vivo, in situ, ab initio, in silico, post mortem, ex situ, posthumous, in vacuo, (in) operando, post facto, and ex post facto, as used in the scientific literature, are considered. Uses of the Latin origin terms in situ, extra situm, in operando, in vivo, in vacuo, in vitro, extra vivum, post facto and ex post facto, ab initiis, computatro, and post mortem are discussed. Ion‐exchange materials are commonly composed of polyelectrolyte networks in which crosslinking preserves macroscopic geometry and prevents dissolution in aqueous conditions. However, crosslinking inherently inhibits efficient swelling and mass transfer during ion‐exchange processes. Herein, a one‐step polymerization‐induced microphase separation (PIMS) approach directly using water and linear polystyrene sulfonate macromolecular chain transfer agents (macroCTAs) is developed to engineer bicontinuous nanostructured materials with rapid ion‐exchange capabilities. These materials feature water‐swollen liquid‐like polyelectrolyte domain embedded in a rigid polymer network, where the domain spacing, as determined by small angle X‐ray scattering experiments, is precisely modulated between 15 and 89 nm based on the molecular weight of the macroCTA used. As the bicontinuous nanostructure enables rapid mass transfer throughout the material bulk, the 3D printed PIMS materials are able to rapidly remove model charged dyes from solution, exhibiting a mass transfer coefficient ≈35 times higher than commercially available counterparts. This work is the first example demonstrating direct self‐assembly of water into continuous nanochannels in a well‐controlled manner as supported by time‐resolved small‐angle neutron scattering experiments during polymerization. Moreover, these nanostructured materials are readily produced using commercially available 3D printers, enabling unparalleled high‐resolution fabrication of targeted complex structures, including accurately controllable macroporous geometries and surface areas. Wadsley‐Roth niobium oxide phases have attracted extensive research interest recently as promising battery anodes. We have synthesized the niobium‐molybdenum oxide shear phase (Nb, Mo)13O33 with superior electrochemical Li‐ion storage performance, including an ultralong cycling lifespan of at least 15000 cycles. During electrochemical cycling, a reversible single‐phase solid‐solution reaction with lithiated intermediate solid solutions is demonstrated using in situ X‐ray diffraction, with the valence and short‐range structural changes of the electrode probed by in situ Nb and Mo K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. This work reveals that the superior stability of niobium molybdenum oxides is underpinned by changes in octahedral distortion during electrochemical reactions, and we report an in‐depth understanding of how this stabilizes the oxide structure during cycling with implications for future long‐life battery material design. The steam oxidation resistance of UN and UN-(20 vol%)ZrN fuel pellets is evaluated to enhance understanding of steam corrosion mechanisms in advanced nuclear fuel materials. In situ neutron diffraction shows the modified UN fuel pellets form a (U 0.77 ,Zr 0.23)N solid-solution and the sole crystalline oxidation product detected in bulk is (U 0.77 ,Zr 0.23)O 2. U 2 N 3 is not detected in significant quantities during the steam oxidation of UN or (U 0.77 ,Zr 0.23)N and stable lattice parameters show that hydriding does not take place. Steam oxidation rates, obtained via sequential Rietveld refinement show how (U 0.77 ,Zr 0.23)N has a higher activation energy (79 ± 1 kJmol−1 vs. 50 ± 5 kJmol−1), higher onset temperature (430 °C vs. 400 °C) and slower reaction rates for steam oxidation up to 616 °C, than pure UN. Throughout, both UN and (U 0.77 ,Zr 0.23)N exhibit linear (non-protective) oxidation kinetics, signifying that degradation of the fuel pellets is caused by the evolution of gaseous products at the interface followed by oxide scale spallation. This quantitative and mechanistic understanding of material degradation enables better defined operating regimes and points towards (U,Zr)N solid solutions as a promising strategy for the design of advanced nuclear fuel materials with enhanced steam corrosion resistance. • In situ neutron diffraction measures (U0.77Zr0.23)N and UN steam corrosion. • Rate equations show enhanced steam oxidation resistance for (U0.77Zr0.23)N. • Both (U0.77Zr0.23)N and UN exhibit linear (non-protective) oxidation kinetics. • (U0.77Zr0.23)O2 and UO2 are the only crystalline products detected in bulk. This study investigated the influence of parent austenite grain refinement on the intervariant boundary network (population and connectivity) in a lath martensitic steel. Parent austenite grain refinement revealed a progressive reduction in the fraction of the 60° misorientation boundaries in martensite, which was linked to a decrease in the 60 ° / [ 110 ] intervariant boundary population. The phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography demonstrated that the variant selection mechanism altered from the 3-variant clustering (V 1 V 3 V 5) in the coarse parent austenite towards the 4-variant clustering (V 1 V 2 V 3 V 4) in the fine parent austenite grain, due to the change in the lattice parameter of the parent and daughter phase in which the martensite transformation occurs, as measured using in situ neutron diffraction. The change in the variant clustering arrangement with the parent austenite grain refinement led to a progressive promotion of 60 ° / [ 111 ] and 10.5 ° / [ 011 ] intervariant boundaries at the expense of 60 ° / [ 110 ] martensite intervariant boundaries. Subsequently, the connectivity of low energy {110} tilt intervariant boundaries gradually increased through the refinement of parent austenite grain size, eventually reducing the high energy {110} twist boundary connectivity. This change improved the impact toughness of martensite produced from the fine-grained austenite as the weak connectivity of high energy boundaries delays the coalescence of voids, promoting ductile fracture.
