This study proposes a new, doubly re-entrant auxetic unit-cell design that is based on the widely used auxetic honeycomb structure. Our objective was to develop a structure that preserves and enhances the advantages of the auxetic honeycomb while eliminating all negative aspects. The doubly re-entrant geometry design aims to enhance the mechanical properties, while eliminating the buckling deformation characteristic of the re-entrant deformation mechanism. The effects of the geometric modification are described and evaluated using two parameters, offset and deg. A series of experiments were conducted on a wide range of parameters based on these two parameters. Specimens were printed via the vat photopolymerization process and were subjected to a compression test. Our aim was to investigate the mechanical properties (energy absorption and compressive force) and the deformation behaviour of these specimens in relation to the relevant parameters. The novel geometry achieved the intended properties, outperforming the original auxetic honeycomb structure. Increasing the offset and deg parameters results in increasing the energy absorption capability (up to 767%) and the maximum compressive force (up to 17 times). The right parameter choice eliminates buckling and results in continuous auxetic behaviour. Abstract3D additive manufacturing of metamaterials, especially honeycomb structures, has gained prominence in industrial manufacturing for their exceptional mechanical properties and energy absorption (EA) capabilities. This study introduces a novel circular tubular honeycomb structure to enhance EA characteristics. Through quasi-static compression experiments and finite element simulations, specific energy absorption (SEA) of various circular structures is analyzed. Results show that the circular tubular honeycomb structure excels in SEA performance, lightweight construction, and reduced Poisson’s ratio. Microfluidic valves play a key role within microfluidic systems by regulating fluid flow through distinct microchannels, enabling many advanced applications in medical diagnostics, lab‐on‐chips, and laboratory automation. While microfluidic systems are often limited to planar structures, 3D printing enables new capabilities to generate complex designs for fluidic circuits with higher densities and integrated components. However, the control of fluids within 3D structures presents several difficulties, making it challenging to scale effectively and many fluidic devices are still often restricted to quasi‐planar structures. Incorporating mechanical metamaterials that exhibit spatially adjustable mechanical properties into microfluidic systems provides an opportunity to address these challenges. Here, systematic computational and experimental characterization of a modified re‐entrant honeycomb structure are performed to generate a modular metamaterial for an active device that allows us to directly regulate flow through integrated, multiplexed fluidic channels "one‐at‐a‐time," in a manner that is highly scalable. A design algorithm is presented, so that this architecture can be extended to arbitrary geometries, and it is expected that by incorporation of mechanical metamaterial designs into 3D printed fluidic systems, which themselves are readily expandable to any complex geometries, will enable new biotechnological and biomedical applications of 3D printed devices. We consider propagation of two-dimensional waves on the infinite hexagonal (honeycomb) lattice. Namely, we study the discrete Helmholtz equation in hexagonal lattices without and with a boundary. It is shown that for some configurations these problems can be equivalently reduced to similar problems for the triangular lattice. Based on this fact, new results are obtained for the existence and uniqueness of the solution in the case of the real wave number k ∈ ( 0 , 6 ) ∖ { 2 , 3 , 2 } {k\in(0,\sqrt{6})\setminus\{\sqrt{2},\sqrt{3},2\}} for the non-homogeneous Helmholtz equation in hexagonal lattices with no boundaries and the real wave number k ∈ ( 0 , 2 ) ∪ ( 2 , 6 ) {k\in(0,\sqrt{2})\cup(2,\sqrt{6})} for the exterior Dirichlet problem. Additive manufacturing enables the production of lattice structures, which have been proven to be a superior class of lightweight mechanical metamaterials whose specific stiffness can reach the theoretical limit of the upper Hashin–Shtrikman bound for isotropic cellular materials. To achieve isotropy, complex structures are required, which can be challenging in powder bed additive manufacturing, especially with regard to subsequent powder removal. The present study focuses on the Finite Element Method simulation of 2.5D anisotropic plate lattice metamaterials and the investigation of their lightweight potential. The intentional use of anisotropic structures allows the production of a cell architecture that is easily manufacturable via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) while also enabling straightforward optimization for specific load cases. The work demonstrates that the considered anisotropic plate lattices exhibit high weight-specific stiffnesses, superior to those of honeycomb structures, and, simultaneously, a good de-powdering capability. A significant increase in stiffness and the associated surpassing of the upper Hashin–Shtrikman bound due to anisotropy is achievable by optimizing wall thicknesses depending on specific load cases. A stability analysis reveals that, in all lattice structures, plastic deformation is initiated before linear buckling occurs. An analysis of stress concentrations indicates that the introduction of radii at the plate intersections reduces stress peaks and simultaneously increases the weight-specific stiffnesses and thus the lightweight potential. The excellent shape stability of thermally expanded metamaterials and the good bandgap properties of acoustic metamaterials have a wide range of promising applications in aerospace and sensors. Here, a bi-material-directional honeycomb metamaterial (BHM) with tunable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and bandgap properties is proposed. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are employed to reveal the thermal deformation mechanism of the BHM. In addition, the analytical expression of the effective Young's modulus is established by considering both tensile and bending deformation. Based on the Bloch theorem, the band structures of the BHM are calculated by the finite element method. Parameter analysis confirms that the CTE and bandgap of the BHM can be simultaneously regulated and drastically adjusted by changing the geometric parameters and material combinations. Meanwhile, the coupling relationship of the effective CTE, Young's modulus, and total effective bandgap width are investigated. The results show that the BHM can have tunable CTE function and large total effective bandgap width by selecting suitable parameters while satisfying stiffness requirements. This study achieves a dual objective of specific CTE properties and bandgap design through rational material selection and shape design, which makes the metamaterials have better tunability and multifunctionality. The bandgap properties of elastic metamaterials can be efficiently utilized to tailor the propagation characteristics of elastic and acoustic waves, which have promising applications in noise and vibration reduction and isolation. In this paper, an elastic metamaterial with a multilayered honeycomb structure (EMHS) is proposed to enlarge the bandgaps in the low-frequency range and its bandgap properties are analyzed. To meet the requirement of the lightweight design, an optimization model for maximizing the total relative bandgap width with a mass constraint is established. A novel optimization approach combining the Kriging surrogate model with the genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to reduce the huge computational cost of the corresponding optimization problem. In the Kriging-GA approach, a high-precision Kriging-based surrogate model with addition of supplementary points is constructed to predict the bandgap objective function value, and the GA is employed to search for the optimal parameters. The performance of the proposed Kriging-GA approach is investigated by numerical examples, and the results are compared with those obtained by the commonly used FEM-GA method. The results show that the proposed Kriging-GA approach is highly efficient for the design optimization of the EMHS and can remarkably reduce the computational cost of the considered optimization problem, which has promising prospects in a wide range of engineering applications. The membrane-type structure that can achieve excellent sound insulation characteristics under lightweight conditions is widely concerned, but it generally involves a small mass block attached to a thin membrane. Although this kind of design can obtain better acoustic insulation performance, the mass block will cause installation and manufacturing issues in industrial applications. This paper presents a multilayer honeycomb membrane-type acoustic metamaterial with an interlayer structure. Similar to the mass block, the interlayer structure makes less sound energy transmitted by varying the eigenmode characteristics of the membrane. Considering the integrated design of the interlayer structure, the issues of installation and manufacturing are solved and the sound transmission loss is enhanced on the fixed overall dimension and small additional mass. The results indicate that the design of interlayer structures can break the bottleneck of ultrathin and lightweight requirements. Meanwhile, the symmetry of interlayer position can lead to the shift in transmission loss valley to a higher frequency, achieving high sound insulation in a wide frequency range. A theoretical model has been developed to express the longitudinal and transverse piezoelectric effects in ferro/piezoelectrets. This model is an extension of the classic model based on layer-dielectric structures that focuses on the longitudinal piezoelectric effect. The improved model reveals that the relation between the longitudinal piezoelectric d33 coefficient and the transverse piezoelectric d31 coefficient is associated with Poisson's ratio μ13 (or μ31) and Young's moduli Y1 and Y3. The polarity of the two coefficients is opposite for materials with a positive Poisson's ratio as normally observed in conventional piezoelectric materials, and the same for materials with a negative Poisson's ratio, i.e., auxetic materials. The experimental results available in the literature and obtained from ferroelectret metamaterials with a honeycomb cross-sectional structure and two-dimensional (2D) symmetric structure, called 2D ferroelectret metamaterials, designed and prepared in this study reasonably agree with theoretical predictions. This study not only extends the scope of the metamaterials by inducing the concept of ferroelectret metamaterials but also provides a strategy for designing ferroelectrets with designable properties. Previous studies used to take the regular configuration as the element of the cellular structures, then carry out geometric optimization on the initial structures. Nowadays, more and more bionic metamaterial have been studied for their unique properties, such as bionic honeycomb tubular nested structure, bionic sinusoidal honeycomb, butterfly honeycomb, bamboo and beetle forewing thin-walled structures. Here, we report a novel gardenia-shaped honeycomb (GSH) by observing the gardenia from nature. Two valuable mechanical properties within GSH were explored in this study, which can simultaneously provide good deformability and zero Poisson's ratio effect. To understand the mechanical properties of GSH, we show by theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods where is a good agreement. The developed theoretical models for calculating the in-plane elastic modulus are based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theorem and energy principle. The numerical and experimental tensile process at coincident strain were captured to strongly show the deformability of GSH. A novel re-entrant honeycomb metamaterial based on 3D-printing technology is proposed by introducing chiral structures into diamond honeycomb metamaterial (DHM), named chiral-diamond-combined honeycomb metamaterial (CDCHM), and has been further optimized using the assembly idea. Compared with the traditional DHM, the CDCHM has better performance in static and vibration isolation. The static and vibration properties of the DHM and CDCHM are investigated by experiments and simulations. The results show that the CDCHM has a higher load-carrying capacity than that of the DHM. In addition, the vibration isolation optimal design schemes of the DHM and CDCHM are examined by experiments and simulations. It is found that the vibration suppression of the CDCHM is also improved greatly. In particular, the optimization approach with metal pins and particle damping achieves a wider bandgap in the low-frequency region, which can strengthen the suppression of low-frequency vibrations. And the introduction of particle damping can not only design the frequency of the bandgap via the alteration of the dosage, but also enhance the damping of the main structure. Based on the concept of component assembly, a novel star polygon-coupled honeycomb metamaterial, which achieves a collaborative improvement in load-bearing capacity and vibration suppression performance, is proposed based on a common polygonal structure. The compression simulation and experiment results show that the load-bearing capacity of the proposed metamaterial is three times more than that of the initial metamaterial. Additionally, metal pins are attached and particle damping is applied to the metamaterial to regulate its bandgap properties; the influence of configuration parameters, including the size, number, position, and material of the metal pins, on bandgaps is also investigated. The results show that the bandgap of the proposed metamaterial can be conveniently and effectively regulated by adjusting the parameters and can effectively suppress vibrations in the corresponding frequency band. Particle damping can be used to continuously adjust the frequency of the bandgap and further enhance the vibration suppression capacity of the metamaterial in other frequency bands. To realize the one‐dimensional deformation of morphing wings, zero Poisson's ratio (ZPR) honeycomb metamaterials have become a popular research topic due to their lightweight, low in‐plane modulus, and high out‐of‐plane strength. A ZPR honeycomb metamaterial is designed and prepared from short‐cut carbon fiber‐reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) by a 3D printer. The mechanical properties of ZPR honeycomb metamaterials were tested to determine their tensile and bending stiffness. The results show that the metamaterial can achieve 62.3% ± 3.3% in‐plane elastic deformation after optimized structure design. At the same time, metamaterial has a certain bending resistance to keep the airfoil from normal buckling deformation. Moreover, a new test method for evaluating the cycle deformation behavior of flexible morphing wings is proposed. The high‐speed cyclic tension‐compression test showed that H22‐t0.6‐CT has the best stability, which may be related to its lower porosity (2.15% ± 0.12%). These results indicate that ZPR honeycomb metamaterials have great application prospects in the field of morphing wings. Unlike traditional energy dissipation structures that dissipate energy through irreversible plastic deformation or collapse, metamaterials based on friction energy dissipation have attracted attention due to their reusability. This article proposed a novel energy dissipation metamaterial by integrating friction energy dissipation mechanism into negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) structures. The integration of friction energy dissipation mechanism can simultaneously enhance the effective stiffness and NPR effect. The mechanical properties of the proposed structure were investigated using theoretical analysis, experiments, and finite element (FE) simulations. The influence of variables such as internal concave angle, friction coefficient, and number of reinforcing ribs was discussed. The results indicate that both unit cell and honeycomb structure can repeatedly dissipate energy within the elastic range. Compared with the traditional concave hexagonal structure, the effective stiffness and NPR effect were enhanced. This work provides a novel idea for the design of NPR energy dissipation structures. When used in bulk applications, mechanical metamaterials set forth a multiscale problem with many orders of magnitude in scale separation between the micro and macro scales. However, mechanical metamaterials fall outside conventional homogenization theory on account of the flexural, or bending, response of their members, including torsion. We show that homogenization theory, based on calculus of variations and notions of Gamma-convergence, can be extended to account for bending. The resulting homogenized metamaterials exhibit intrinsic generalized elasticity in the continuum limit. Broadband microwave absorption is difficult to be realized in traditional coating form as multiple electromagnetic resonances are difficult to be generated even with dielectric-magnetic loss composites. Narrow absorption band confines the practical usage of the novel electromagnetic nano composites. Herein, the structural stealth concept is proposed to overcome the narrow-band absorption problem with the effect carrier of metastructure. The gradient honeycomb metastructure (GHM) was designed and optimized with module stack large mutation genetic algorithms. The structural design, fabrication, experimental verification and parameter adjustment were included in the closed loop with material-structure-function integration. Multiple resonance effects were introduced in the gradient designs. GHM achieved −10 dB absorption bandwidth in 1.92–17.6 GHz and three deep absorption peaks were introduced by three layers of electromagnetic resonant honeycomb. Broadband absorption in oblique incidence from 30° to grazing angle 85° was achieved to overcome the oblique absorption degeneration problems of traditional nano lossy composites. The structural mechanical performance was high with the maximum equivalent tensile strength of 108.6 MPa and the maximum flexural load of 0.873 kN. The results showed the importance of structural stealth with material-structure-function integration to design metastructure for broadband microwave absorption, which provided a promising approach to achieve broadband microwave absorption. Hexagonal perforated honeycomb (HPH) metamaterials were designed, fabricated and investigated in this work. Initially, the mechanical properties and deformation modes of various proposed HPH metamaterials (HPH-U, HPH-1 L and HPH-3 L) under quasi-static vertical compression were analyzed using experimental and finite element methods. The findings reveal significant improvements in mechanical properties and energy absorption due to the honeycomb and hierarchical expandable design. Notably, the auxetic effect is diminished. Subsequently, the impact of key dimensional parameters on the mechanical properties and Poisson's ratio behavior was explored. The results highlighted that an increase of elliptical perforation major axis to minor axis ratio enhanced the auxetic effect but compromised load-bearing and absorptive capacity. Additionally, HPH metamaterials displayed exceptional performance under quasi-static horizontal compression, with their honeycomb structure enabling them to withstand both vertical and horizontal impacts while exhibiting excellent energy absorption capabilities. The study also identified relative density as a crucial factor influencing horizontal impact performance. Finally, the study subjected the HPH metamaterials to multiple quasi-static vertical repetitive compressions, meticulously analyzing variations in mechanical properties under diverse compression ratios. With the increasing demand for vibration-isolation structures with tunable and multifunctional properties driven by the rapid development of complex engineering applications, metamaterials have emerged as promising candidates for this purpose owing to their extraordinary properties derived from their unique structural configurations. Owing to their unique deformation mechanisms, negative Poisson's ratio structures have been extensively studied in terms of vibration isolation and energy absorption; however, research on their performance tunability remains lacking. This paper describes a bistable honeycomb mechanical metamaterial (BHMM) consisting of cosine-shaped beams, which exhibits transformable Poisson's ratio and tunable vibration isolation properties. The proposed structure exhibited bistable properties, i.e., undergoing a configuration transition under external forces and retaining its existing configuration after the loading was removed. Furthermore, the two stable configurations exhibited distinctive elastic vibration characteristics, allowing the manipulation of elastic wave propagation on a subwavelength scale via local resonant mechanisms. Overall, this study presents a design methodology for multi-performance tunable metamaterials that satisfy the demands of the external environment. In recent years, origami honeycomb metamaterials have garnered extensive attention from researchers. Re-entrant origami honeycomb metamaterials exhibit excellent mechanical performances by virtue of lightweight, high-energy-absorbing characteristics and diverse configurations. In this study, the gradient re-entrant origami honeycomb metamaterials are designed by changing significant geometric parameters. To investigate the effects of geometric parameters variations on compressive behaviors, the theoretical analysis model of the re-entrant origami honeycomb is built to predict the compression stress under low-velocity and high-velocity impact. Subsequently, the energy absorption of the uniform re-entrant origami honeycomb (UROH), the gradient-thickness re-entrant origami honeycombs (GTROHs) and the gradient-angle re-entrant origami honeycomb (GAROHs)are investigated under different compression velocities. The impact resistances of UROH, GTROHs and GAROHs are discussed systematically. By adjusting the gradient distribution of thickness, the deformation modes and Poisson's ratio curves of the structure could be altered. Furthermore, under the high-velocity impact, the specific energy absorption (SEA) of the unidirectionally negative GTROH is increased by 36% than that of UROH at the strain of 0.29. The SEA of the unidirectionally positive GTROH is higher by 14.4% than that of UROH at the strain of 0.8. In addition, the unidirectionally positive GTROH exhibits better impact resistance performance than UROH by comparing the peak stress and SEA value under different compression velocities. Local resonant metamaterials show significant promise in applications involving the attenuation of impact waves. This paper introduces a honeycomb metamaterial featuring a circular distribution of multiple mass-beam resonators designed to enhance impact mitigation by broadening low frequency bandgaps. The bandgaps of unit cells with different number of mass-beam resonators (MBR) are calculated. It is found that the unit cell with circularly distributed resonators (C-MBR) has strong low frequency local resonance in all directions, thus opening a complete wide bandgap in about 500–1200Hz. Then, a method of equivalent stiffness reduction related to the corresponding mode shapes is used to research the negative effective mass density characteristic, explaining the generation of the low frequency bandgaps. Subsequently, the impact protection capacity of local resonant metamaterial is compared with that of ordinary honeycomb metamaterial through experiment and simulation. Interestingly, the maximum acceleration values under the impact load of local resonant metamaterial are about 45% lower than that of honeycomb metamaterial, and the reaction force under the blast load is about 80% reduction. Besides, by analyzing the acceleration curve waveform and transmission spectrum, the local resonant metamaterial is found to exhibit continuous short period vibration, which blocks the wave in low frequency band. Finally, the energy dissipation performance of the local resonant metamaterial explains that it converts more impact energy into the kinetic energy of the core with resonators, thereby reducing the energy transferred to the bottom panel. The study also examines the effects of design parameters (ring size, metal pin size, and pin material) on the bandgap characteristics, and the vibration suppression properties of the meta-material are further enhanced by introducing particle damping. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed N-SSHM has a lower starting frequency and wider bandwidth for the bandgap than the T-SSHM. In summary, the N-SSHM demonstrates significant improvements in both load-bearing and vibration suppression compared to the T-SSHM. This meta -honeycomb reverses the energy absorption mode of traditional honeycomb materials; that is, the energy absorption by plastic deformation of the material becomes the reflection of the stress wave through the equivalent negative mass property generated by the local resonance system, which significantly reduces the deformation of the material and the reaction force at the support under impact loads. In particular, for the secondary explosion loading, the maximum deformation of the meta -honeycomb is reduced by 74% compared with the traditional hierarchical honeycomb. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the design of meta -honeycomb can be optimized by coupling the bandgap generated by the negative mass property, thereby improving the energy absorption efficiency.
