Machine learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly used in power systems applications. One important application is the classification and localization of various types of transmission line faults. Using voltage and current measurements from phasor measurement units (PMUs), a number of useful features can be extracted, which can form the basis of a ML-based prediction of the fault type, line, and distance on the line. This paper proposes a technique to find the optimal number and placement of PMUs by performing thorough feature selection. The features are selected to maximize the accuracy of the ML classification and regression algorithms. The results show that for the IEEE 14 bus system, the use of only five PMUs is sufficient to obtain high levels of accuracy. For example, a testing accuracy of 99.0% and 97.1% can be achieved for the fault type and fault line location, respectively. As for the fault distance along the line, the testing MAE of 3.1% can be obtained along with an R 2 score of 94.4%. Adding more PMUs does not provide any additional value in terms of accuracy. Due to their complexity and often harsh working environment, air compressors are inevitably exposed to a variety of faults and defects during their operation. Thus, condition monitoring is critically required for early fault recognition and detection to avoid any type industrial failures. In this paper, an intelligent algorithm for reciprocating air compressor fault diagnosis is developed using real-time acoustic signals acquired from an air compressor with one healthy and seven different faulty states such as leakage inlet valve (LIV), leakage outlet valve (LOV), non-return valve (NRV), piston ring, flywheel, rider-belt and bearing defects. The proposed algorithm mainly consists of three steps: feature extraction, selection, and classification. For feature extraction, experimental acoustic signals are decomposed using maximal overlap discrete wavelet packet transform (MODWPT) by six levels into 64 wavelet coefficients (nodes). Thereafter, time domain features are calculated for each node to build each air compressor's health state feature matrix. Each feature matrix dimension is reduced by selecting the most useful features using Harris hawks optimization (HHO) in the feature selection step. Finally, for feature classification, selected features are used as inputs for random forest (RF), ensemble tree (ET) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN) to detect, identify, and classify the compressor health states with high classification accuracy. Comparative studies with several feature extraction and selection methods prove the proposed approach's efficiency in detecting, identifying, and classifying all air compressor faults. Ensuring a consistently reliable power supply is paramount in power systems. Researchers are engaged in the pursuit of categorizing transmission line failures to design countermeasures for mitigating the associated financial losses. Our study employs a machine learning-based methodology, specifically the Conformer Convolution-Augmented Transformer model, to classify transmission line fault types. This model processes time series input data directly, eliminating the need for expert feature extraction. The training and validation datasets are generated through simulations conducted on a two-terminal transmission line, while testing is conducted on historical data consisting of 108 events that occurred in the Taiwan power system. Due to the limited availability of historical data, they are utilized solely for inference purposes. Our simulations are meticulously designed to encompass potential faults based on an analysis of historical data. A significant aspect of our investigation focuses on the impact of the sampling rate on input data, establishing that a rate of four samples per cycle is sufficient. This suggests that, for our specific classification tasks, relying on lower frequency data might be adequate, thereby challenging the conventional emphasis on high-frequency analysis. Eventually, our methodology achieves a validation accuracy of 100%, although the testing accuracy is lower at 88.88%. The discrepancy in testing accuracy can be attributed to the limited information and the small number of historical events, which pose challenges in bridging the gap between simulated data and real-world measurements. To address the issue of diagnosing hard and soft faults in active power factor correction (APFC) power supply, this study analyzes failure modes resulting from aging and malfunction of various sensitive components. The power fault waveform patterns are initially analyzed based on the circuit's THD, current ripple value, and RMS value. The inductor current signals in different fault modes are then utilized to extract and construct time–frequency fusion fault features of the APFC power supply. Finally, these feature quantities are downscaled and optimized using the RF algorithm. The SOA‐KELM model of the APFC converter is proposed, and the feature vectors under different fault modes are used to classify and diagnose faults, achieving hard and soft fault detection of the converter. The experiments show that the method achieves 100% accuracy for hard fault diagnosis and 96.36% accuracy for soft fault diagnosis of the converter, demonstrating high diagnostic accuracy. This paper proposes a new fault diagnosis method for centrifugal pumps by combining signal processing with deep learning techniques. Centrifugal pumps facilitate fluid transport through the energy generated by the impeller. Throughout the operation, variations in the fluid pressure at the pump's inlet may impact the generalization of traditional machine learning models trained on raw statistical features. To address this concern, first, vibration signals are collected from centrifugal pumps, followed by the application of a lowpass filter to isolate frequencies indicative of faults. These signals are then subjected to a continuous wavelet transform and Stockwell transform, generating two distinct time–frequency scalograms. The Sobel filter is employed to further highlight essential features within these scalograms. For feature extraction, this approach employs two parallel convolutional autoencoders, each tailored for a specific scalogram type. Subsequently, extracted features are merged into a unified feature pool, which forms the basis for training a two-layer artificial neural network, with the aim of achieving accurate fault classification. The proposed method is validated using three distinct datasets obtained from the centrifugal pump under varying inlet fluid pressures. Fault diagnosis of rotating machines is essential for the safe and efficient operation of maritime vessels. It prevents potential failures in rotating machines in maritime systems. Simultaneously developed faults severely damage the machines, leading to unprecedented incidents and higher maintenance costs. Data availability for developing multi-fault diagnosis solutions is limited, creating maintainability problems. The unavailability of data also causes further obstacles in the accurate diagnosis of machines. The efficiency of maritime machinery can be improved with intelligent diagnosis by advanced machine learning algorithms. This paper proposes a methodology to diagnose multi-faults with balanced and imbalanced acoustic, vibration and current signals datasets. After acquiring the data from an experimental setup under various speeds, a time-frequency-based Stepping Frame Synchrosqueezed Fourier Transform (SFSFT) is deployed in each segmented signal prior to feature extraction. The extracted features are used for training the Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN). Different balanced and imbalanced datasets are created to check the multi-fault classification ability of the proposed methodology. This paper introduces a sophisticated approach for identifying and categorizing broken rotor bars in direct torque-controlled (DTC) induction motors. DTC is implemented in industrial drive systems as a suitable control method to preserve torque control performance, which sometimes shows its impact on fault-representing frequencies. This is because of the DTC's closed-loop control nature, whichtriesto reduce speed and torque ripples by changing the voltage profile. The proposed model utilizes the modified Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) technique in combination with gradient-boosting decision trees (GBDT) to detect and classify the abnormalities in BRBs at diverse (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) loading conditions. To prevent overfitting of the proposed model, we used the adaptive fold cross-validation (AF-CV) technique, which can dynamically adjust the number of folds during the optimization process. By employing extensive feature engineering in the original dataset and then applying Shapely Additive exPlanations(SHAP)-based feature selection, our methodology effectively identifies informative features from signals (three-phase current, three-phase voltage, torque, and speed) and motor characteristics. The gradient-boosting decision tree (GBDT) classifier, trained using the given characteristics, extracts consistent and reliable classification performance under different loading circumstances and enables precise and accurate detection and classification of broken rotor bars. The proposed approach (SHAP-Fusion GBDT with AF-CV) is a major advancement in the field of machine learning in detecting motor anomalies at varying loading conditions and proved to be an effective mechanism for preventative maintenance and preventing faults in DTC-controlled induction motors byattaining an accuracy rate of 99% for all loading conditions. Motor fault diagnosis is an important task in the operational monitoring of electrical machines in manufacturing. This study proposes an effective bearing fault diagnosis model for electrical machinery based on machine learning techniques. The proposed model is a combination of three processes: feature extraction of signals collected from the motor based on multi-resolution analysis, fast Fourier transform, and envelope analysis. Next, redundant or irrelevant features are removed using the feature selection technique. A binary salps swarm algorithm combined with an extended repository is the proposed method to remove unnecessary features. As a result, an optimal feature subset is obtained to improve the performance of the classification model. Finally, two classifiers, k-nearest neighbor and support vector machine, are used to classify the fault of the electric motor. There are four input datasets used to evaluate the model performance, and UCI is the benchmark dataset to verify the effectiveness of the proposed feature selection technique. The remaining three datasets include the bearing dataset collected from experiments, with an average classification accuracy of 99.9%, as well as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT), which are public datasets with average classification accuracies of 99.6% and 98.98%, respectively. In the operation of medium-voltage distribution cables, the local insulation performance may degrade due to inherent defects, environmental influences, and external forces, leading to consecutive self-recovering latent faults in the cables. If not addressed promptly, these faults may escalate into permanent failures. To address this issue, this paper analyzes the development mechanism and characteristics of latent cable faults. A 10kV low-resistance cable latent fault model based on the Kizilcay arc model is built in the PSCAD/EMTDC platform. Furthermore, the paper analyzes and extracts the time-domain, frequency-domain, and time-frequency domain features of fault current samples. Effective fault feature vectors are constructed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Based on the fault feature vectors and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), an intelligent fault identification model for cable latent faults is developed. The initial parameters of the ELM model are optimized using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Defect pattern analysis of wafer bin maps (WBMs) is an important means of identifying process problems. Recently, automated analysis methods using machine learning or deep learning have been studied as alternatives to manual classification by engineers. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the feature extraction performance of defect patterns by transforming the polar coordinate system instead of the existing WBM image input. To reduce the variability of the location representation, defect patterns in the Cartesian coordinate system, where the location of the distributed defect die is not constant, were converted to a polar coordinate system. The CNN classifier, which uses polar coordinate transformed input, achieved a classification accuracy of 91.3%, which is 4.8% better than the existing WBM image-based CNN classifier. Additionally, a tree-structured classifier model that sequentially connects binary classifiers achieved a classification accuracy of 94%. The method proposed in this paper is also applicable to the defect pattern classification of WBMs consisting of different die sizes than the training data. Finally, the paper proposes an automated pattern classification method that uses individual classifiers to learn defect types and then applies ensemble techniques for multiple defect pattern classification. Ultrasonic diagnostics is the earliest way to predict industrial faults. Usually, a contact microphone is employed for detection, but the recording will be contaminated with noise. In this paper, a dataset that contains 10 main faults of pipelines and motors is analyzed from which 30 different features in the time and frequency domains are extracted. Afterward, for dimensionality reduction, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) are performed. In the subsequent phase, recursive feature elimination (RFE) is employed as a strategic method to analyze and select the most relevant features for the classifiers. Next, predictive models consisting of k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are employed. Then, in order to solve the classification problem, a stacking classifier based on a meta-classifier which combines multiple classification models is introduced. Furthermore, the k-fold cross-validation technique is employed to assess the effectiveness of the model in handling new data for the evaluation of experimental results in ultrasonic fault detection. With the proposed method, the accuracy is around 5% higher over five cross folds with the least amount of variation. The timing evaluation of the meta model on the 64 MHz Cortex M4 microcontroller unit (MCU) revealed an execution time of 11 ms, indicating it could be a promising solution for real-time monitoring. The machines of WF Maschinenbau process metal blanks into various workpieces using so-called flow-forming processes. The quality of these workpieces depends largely on the quality of the blanks and the condition of the machine. This creates an urgent need for automated monitoring of the forming processes and the condition of the machine. Since the complexity of the flow-forming processes makes physical modeling impossible, the present work deals with data-driven modeling using machine learning algorithms. The main contributions of this work lie in showcasing the feasibility of utilizing machine learning and sensor data to monitor flow-forming processes, along with developing a practical approach for this purpose. The approach includes an experimental design capable of providing the necessary data, as well as a procedure for preprocessing the data and extracting features that capture the information needed by the machine learning models to detect defects in the blank and the machine. To make efficient use of the small number of experiments available, the experimental design is generated using Design of Experiments methods. They consist of two parts. In the first part, a pre-selection of influencing variables relevant to the forming process is performed. In the second part of the design, the selected variables are investigated in more detail. The preprocessing procedure consists of feature engineering, feature extraction and feature selection. In the feature engineering step, the data set is augmented with time series variables that are meaningful in the domain. For feature extraction, an algorithm was developed based on the mechanisms of the r-STSF, a state-of-the-art algorithm for time series classification, extending them for multivariate time series and metric target variables. This feature extraction algorithm itself can be seen as an additional contribution of this work, because it is not tied to the application domain of monitoring flow-forming processes, but can be used as a feature extraction algorithm for multivariate time series classification in general. For feature selection, a Recursive Feature Elimination is employed. With the resulting features, random forests are trained to detect several quality features of the blank and defects of the machine. The trained models achieve good prediction accuracy for most of the target variables. This shows that the application of machine learning is a promising approach for the monitoring of flow-forming processes, which requires further investigation for confirmation. Accurate fault detection in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines plays a pivotal role in enhancing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring grid reliability. This research aims to develop a cost-effective and high-performance fault detection solution for HVDC systems. The primary objective is to accurately identify and localize faults within the power system. In pursuit of this goal, the paper presents a comparative analysis of current and voltage characteristics between the rectifier and inverter sides of the HVDC transmission system and their associated alternating current (AC) counterparts under various fault conditions. Voltage and current features are extracted and optimized using a metaheuristic approach, specifically Harris Hawk's optimization method. Leveraging machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANN), this technique demonstrates its effectiveness in generating a fault locator with exceptional accuracy. With a substantial volume of data employed for learning and training, the Harris Hawks optimization method exhibits faster convergence compared to other metaheuristic methods examined in this study. The research findings are applied to simulate diverse fault types and unknown fault locations at multiple system points. Evaluating the fault detection system's effectiveness, quantified through metrics such as specificity, accuracy, F1 score, and sensitivity, yields remarkable results, with percentages of 99.01%, 98.69%, 98.64%, and 98.67%, respectively. Data-based equipment fault detection and diagnosis is an important research area in the smart factory era, which began with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Steel manufacturing is a typical processing industry, and efficient equipment operation can improve product quality and cost. Steel production systems require precise control of the equipment, which is a complex process. A gearbox transmits power between shafts and is an essential piece of mechanical equipment. A gearbox malfunction can cause serious problems not only in production, quality, and delivery but in safety. Many researchers are developing methods for monitoring gearbox condition and for diagnosing failures in order to resolve problems. In most data-driven methods, the analysis data set is derived from a distribution of identical data with failure mode labels. Industrial sites, however, often collect data without information on the failure type or failure status due to varying operating conditions and periodic repair. Therefore, the data sets not only include frequent false alarms, but they cannot explain the causes of the alarms. In this paper, a framework called the Reduced Lagrange Method (R-LM) periodically assigns pseudolabels to vibration signals collected without labels and creates an input data set. In order to monitor the status of equipment and to diagnose failures, the input data set is fed into a supervised learning classifier. To verify the proposed method, we build a test rig using motors and gearboxes that are used on production sites in order to artificially simulate defects in the gears and to operate them to collect vibration data. Data features are extracted from the frequency domain and time domain, and pseudolabeling is applied. There were fewer false alarms when applying R-LM, and it was possible to explain which features were responsible for equipment status changes, which improved field applicability. It was possible to detect changes in equipment conditions before a catastrophic failure, thus providing meaningful alarm and warning information, as well as further promising research topics. Aiming at the problem of difficult fault diagnosis work caused by the difficulty of data acquisition of the bearing in the traction part of a coal mining machine, a method of ADAMS simulation and HHT feature extraction of the bearing fault of a coal mining machine is proposed. To solve the problems of a few optical fibre line fault samples and the inefficiency of manual communication optical fibre fault diagnosis, this paper proposes a communication optical fibre fault diagnosis model based on variational modal decomposition (VMD), fuzzy entropy (FE) and fuzzy clustering (FC). Firstly, based on the OTDR curve data collected in the field, VMD is used to extract the different modal components (IMF) of the original signal and calculate the fuzzy entropy (FE) values of different components to characterize the subtle differences between them. The fuzzy entropy of each curve is used as the feature vector, which in turn constructs the communication optical fibre feature vector matrix, and the fuzzy clustering algorithm is used to achieve fault diagnosis of faulty optical fibre. The VMD-FE combination can extract subtle differences in features, and the fuzzy clustering algorithm does not require sample training. The experimental results show that the model in this paper has high accuracy and is relevant to the maintenance of communication optical fibre when compared with existing feature extraction models and traditional machine learning models. Power transformers are an essential part of the power grid. They have a relatively low rate of failure, but removing the consequences is costly when it occurs. One of the elements of power transformers that are often the reason for shutting down the unit is the on-load tap changer (OLTC). Many methods have been developed to assess the technical condition of OLTCs. However, they require the transformer to be taken out of service for the duration of the diagnostics, or they do not enable precise diagnostics. Acoustic emission (AE) signals are widely used in industrial diagnostics. The generated signals are difficult to interpret for complex systems, so artificial intelligence tools are becoming more widely used to simplify the diagnostic process. This article presents the results of research on the possibility of creating an online OLTC diagnostics method based on AE signals. An extensive measurement database containing many frequently occurring OLTC defects was created for this research. A method of feature extraction from AE signals based on wavelet decomposition was developed. Several machine learning models were created to select the most effective one for classifying OLTC defects. The presented method achieved 96% efficiency in OLTC defect classification.
