Metal artifacts notoriously pose significant challenge in computed tomography (CT), leading to inaccuracies in image formation and interpretation. Artifact reduction tools have been designed to improve cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image quality by reducing artifacts caused by certain high-density materials. Metal artifact reduction (MAR) tools are specific algorithms that are applied during image reconstruction to minimize or eliminate artifacts degrading CBCT images. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of a MAR algorithm on image quality in CBCT performed for evaluating patients before transarterial radioembolization (TARE). We retrospectively included 40 consecutive patients (aged 65 ± 13 years; 23 males) who underwent 45 CBCT examinations (Allura FD 20, XperCT Roll protocol, Philips Healthcare, Best, The Netherlands) in the setting of evaluation for TARE between January 2017 and December 2018. Artifacts caused by coils, catheters, and surgical clips were scored subjectively by four readers on a 5-point scale (1 = artifacts affecting diagnostic information to 5 = no artifacts) using a side-by-side display of uncorrected and MAR-corrected images. In addition, readers scored tumor visibility and vessel discrimination. MAR-corrected images were assigned higher scores, indicating better image quality. The differences between the measurements with and without MAR were most impressive for coils with a mean improvement of 1.6 points (95%CI [1.5 1.8]) on the 5-point likert scale, followed by catheters 1.4 points (95%CI [1.3 1.5]) and clips 0.7 points (95%CI [0.3 1.1]). Improvements for other artifact sources were consistent but relatively small (below 0.25 points on average). Interrater agreement was good to perfect (Kendall's W coefficient = 0.68–0.95) and was higher for MAR-corrected images, indicating that MAR improves diagnostic accuracy. A metal artifact reduction algorithm can improve diagnostic and interventional accuracy of cone beam CT in patients undergoing radioembolization by reducing artifacts caused by diagnostic catheters and coils, lowering interference of metal artifacts with adjacent major structures, and improving tumor visibility. Ultrafast X-ray computed tomography is an advanced imaging technique for multiphase flows. It has been used with great success for studying gas–liquid as well as gas–solid flows. Here, we apply this technique to analyze density-driven particle segregation in a rotating drum as an exemplary use case for analyzing industrial particle mixing systems. As glass particles are used as the denser of two granular species to be mixed, beam hardening artefacts occur and hamper the data analysis. In the general case of a distribution of arbitrary materials, the inverse problem of image reconstruction with energy-dependent attenuation is often ill-posed. Consequently, commonly known beam hardening correction algorithms are often quite complex. In our case, however, the number of materials is limited. We therefore propose a correction algorithm simplified by taking advantage of the known material properties, and demonstrate its ability to improve image quality and subsequent analyses significantly. Purpose: To prospectively evaluate whether Lung-RADS classification and volumetric nodule assessment were feasible with ultralow-dose (ULD) chest CT scans with deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR). Methods: The institutional review board approved this prospective study. This study included 40 patients (mean age, 66±12 years; 21 women). Participants sequentially underwent LDCT and ULDCT (CTDIvol, 0.96±0.15 mGy and 0.12±0.01 mGy) scans reconstructed with the adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-V 50% (ASIR-V50) and DLIR. CT image quality was compared subjectively and objectively. The pulmonary nodules were assessed visually by two readers using the Lung-RADS 1.1 and automatically using a computerized assisted tool. Results: DLIR provided a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio for LDCT and ULDCT images than ASIR-V50 (all P <.001). In general, DLIR showed superior subjective image quality for ULDCT images (P <.001) and comparable quality for LDCT images compared to ASIR-V50 (P =.01–1). The per-nodule sensitivities of observers for Lung-RADS category 3–4 nodules were 70.6–88.2% and 64.7–82.4% for DLIR-LDCT and DLIR-ULDCT images (P = 1) and categories were mostly concordant within observers. The per-nodule sensitivities of the computer-assisted detection for nodules ≥4 mm were 72.1% and 67.4% on DLIR-LDCT and ULDCT images (P =.50). The 95% limits of agreement for nodule volume differences between DLIR-LDCT and ULDCT images (-85.6 to 78.7 mm3) was similar to the within-scan nodule volume differences between DLIR- and ASIR-V50-LDCT images (-63.9 to 78.5 mm3), with volume differences smaller than 25% in 88.5% and 92.3% of nodules, respectively (P =.65). Low-Dose computer tomography (LDCT) is an ideal alternative to reduce radiation risk in clinical applications. Although supervised-deep-learning-based reconstruction methods have demonstrated superior performance compared to conventional model-driven reconstruction algorithms, they require collecting massive pairs of low-dose and norm-dose CT images for neural network training, which limits their practical application in LDCT imaging. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised and training data-free learning reconstruction method for LDCT imaging that avoids the requirement for training data. The proposed method is a post-processing technique that aims to enhance the initial low-quality reconstruction results, and it reconstructs the high-quality images by neural work training that minimizes the ℓ1-norm distance between the CT measurements and their corresponding simulated sinogram data, as well as the total variation (TV) value of the reconstructed image. Moreover, the proposed method does not require to set the weights for both the data fidelity term and the plenty term. Experimental results on the AAPM challenge data and LoDoPab-CT data demonstrate that the proposed method is able to effectively suppress the noise and preserve the tiny structures. In a number of tomographic applications, data cannot be fully acquired, resulting in severely underdetermined image reconstruction. Conventional methods in such cases lead to reconstructions with significant artifacts. To overcome these artifacts, regularization methods are applied that incorporate additional information. An important example is TV reconstruction, which is known to be efficient in compensating for missing data and reducing reconstruction artifacts. On the other hand, tomographic data are also contaminated by noise, which poses an additional challenge. The use of a single regularizer must therefore account for both the missing data and the noise. A particular regularizer may not be ideal for both tasks. For example, the TV regularizer is a poor choice for noise reduction over multiple scales, in which case ℓ 1 curvelet regularization methods are well suited. To address this issue, in this paper, we present a novel variational regularization framework that combines the advantages of different regularizers. The basic idea of our framework is to perform reconstruction in two stages. The first stage is mainly aimed at accurate reconstruction in the presence of noise, and the second stage is aimed at artifact reduction. Both reconstruction stages are connected by a data proximity condition. The proposed method is implemented and tested for limited-view CT using a combined curvelet–TV approach. Reducing the amount of projection data in computed tomography (CT), specifically sparse-view CT, can reduce exposure dose; however, image artifacts can occur. We quantitatively evaluated the effects of conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) on image quality restoration for sparse-view CT using simulated sparse projection images and compared them with autoencoder (AE) and U-Net models. The AE, U-Net, and CGAN models were trained using pairs of artifacts and original images; 90% of patient cases were used for training and the remaining for evaluation. Restoration of CT values was evaluated using mean error (ME) and mean absolute error (MAE). The image quality was evaluated using structural image similarity (SSIM) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Image quality improved in all sparse projection data; however, slight deformation in tumor and spine regions was observed, with a dispersed projection of over 5°. Some hallucination regions were observed in the CGAN results. Image resolution decreased, and blurring occurred in AE and U-Net; therefore, large deviations in ME and MAE were observed in lung and air regions, and the SSIM and PSNR results were degraded. To assess the image quality parameters of dual-energy computed tomography angiography (DECTA) 40-, and 60 keV virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) combined with deep learning-based image reconstruction model (DLM) and iterative reconstructions (IR). CT scans of 28 post EVAR patients were enrolled. The 60 s delayed phase of DECTA was evaluated. Objective [noise, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)] and subjective (overall image quality and endoleak conspicuity – 3 blinded readers assessment) image quality analyses were performed. The following reconstructions were evaluated: VMI 40, 60 keV VMI; IR VMI 40, 60 keV; DLM VMI 40, 60 keV. The noise level of the DLM VMI images was approximately 50% lower than that of VMI reconstruction. The highest CNR and SNR values were measured in VMI DLM images. The mean CNR in endoleak in 40 keV was accounted for as 1.83 ± 1.2; 2.07 ± 2.02; 3.6 ± 3.26 in VMI, VMI IR, and VMI DLM, respectively. The DLM algorithm significantly reduced noise and increased lesion conspicuity, resulting in higher objective and subjective image quality compared to other reconstruction techniques. The application of DLM algorithms to low-energy VMIs significantly enhances the diagnostic value of DECTA in evaluating endoleaks. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) has become a powerful technique for studying lithium-ion batteries, allowing non-destructive 3D imaging across multiple spatial scales. Image quality is particularly important for observing the internal structure of lithium-ion batteries. During multiple rotations, the existence of cumulative errors and random errors in the rotary table leads to errors in the projection angle, affecting the imaging quality of XCT. The accuracy of the projection angle is an important factor that directly affects imaging. However, the impact of the projection angle on XCT reconstruction imaging is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the required precision of the projection angle sensor cannot be determined explicitly. In this research, we selected a common 18650 cylindrical lithium-ion battery for experiments. By setting up an XCT scanning platform and installing an angle sensor to calibrate the projection angle, we proceeded with image reconstruction after introducing various angle errors. When comparing the results, we found that projection angle errors lead to the appearance of noise and many stripe artifacts in the image. This is particularly noticeable in the form of many irregular artifacts in the image background. The overall variation and residual projection error in detection indicators can effectively reflect the trend in image quality. In Computed Tomography (CT) imaging, one of the most serious concerns has always been ionizing radiation. Several approaches have been proposed to reduce the dose level without compromising the image quality. With the emergence of deep learning, thanks to the increasing availability of computational power and huge datasets, data-driven methods have recently received a lot of attention. Deep learning based methods have also been applied in various ways to address the low-dose CT reconstruction problem. However, the success of these methods largely depends on the availability of labeled data. On the other hand, recent studies showed that training can be done successfully without the need for labeled datasets. In this study, a training scheme was defined to use low-dose projections as their own training targets. The self-supervision principle was applied in the projection domain. The parameters of a denoiser neural network were optimized through self-supervised training. It was shown that our method outperformed both traditional and compressed sensingbased iterative methods, and deep learning based unsupervised methods, in the reconstruction of analytic CT phantoms and human CT images in low-dose CT imaging.
