The field of digital humanities (DH) has evolved throughout the parallel evolution of computers, software and networking techniques, as well as the different attitudes of interested scholars. Since the earliest historical phases of this research field, scholars have been debating whether it can be considered as a new academic discipline and whether it is revolutionary in nature. About 20 years ago, the early denotation of 'humanities computing' evolved to the present label of DH, and deep changes occurred in digital information technologies, as well as in their humanities applications. Meanwhile, dedicated academic curricula were launched, thus adding an argument in favor of the debated disciplinarity of DH. This paper gives an account of the relevant scholarly debate, distinguishing between the early period and the most recent years; it then tries to frame this process in a model of scientific revolution. Fenye (分野, lit., "field allocation"), is a traditional Chinese astrological system that associated celestial phenomena with regions on earth since ancient times. During middle and late imperial China, many literati writings criticized this system as illogical. Yet in the local gazetteers that were compiled in late imperial China to document local data within each administrative region, compilers continued to use fenye as the canonical way to identify their regions within the vast empire. The Jesuit introduction of Western sciences to China, in particular the technology that could precisely locate any place or region with latitude and longitude, appeared to render fenye obsolete, which fueled even more literati criticism. Modern scholars consider the public criticism from the Qianlong emperor and the resulting removal of fenye from the 1781 Rehe Gazetteer the end of fenye in imperial orthodoxy. However, by quantitatively analyzing a collection of 4,410 titles of local gazetteers and their section headings, this paper reveals many examples of local literati who resisted removing fenye entirely from their local history, well into the late Republican period. Knowledge communication in cultural heritage and digital humanities currently faces two challenges, which this paper addresses: On the one hand, data-driven storytelling in these fields has mainly focused on human protagonists, while other essential entities (such as artworks and artifacts, institutions, or places) have been neglected. On the other hand, storytelling tools rarely support the larger chains of data practices, which are required to generate and shape the data and visualizations needed for such stories. This paper introduces the InTaVia platform, which has been developed to bridge these gaps. It supports the practices of data retrieval, creation, curation, analysis, and communication with coherent visualization support for multiple types of entities. We illustrate the added value of this open platform for storytelling with four case studies, focusing on (a) the life of Albrecht Dürer (person biography), (b) the Saliera salt cellar by Benvenuto Cellini (object biography), (c) the artist community of Lake Tuusula (group biography), and (d) the history of the Hofburg building complex in Vienna (place biography). Toponymic entity recognition is currently a critical research hotspot in knowledge graphs. Under the guidance of the national ancient book protection policy and the promotion of the wave of digital humanities research, this paper proposes a toponymic entity recognition model (ALBERT-Conv1D-BiLSTM-CRF) based on the fusion of a pre-trained language model and local features to address the problems of toponymic ambiguity and the differences in ancient and modern grammatical structures in the field of the Genglubu. This model extracts global features with the ALBERT module, fuses global and local features with the Conv1D module, performs sequence modeling with the BiLSTM module to capture deep semantics and long-distance dependency information, and finally, completes sequence annotation with the CRF module. The experiments show that while taking into account the computational resources and cost, this improved model is significantly improved compared with the benchmark model (ALBERT-BiLSTM-CRF), and the precision, recall, and F1 are increased by 0.74%, 1.28%, and 1.01% to 98.08%, 96.67%, and 97.37%, respectively. The paper focuses on reinterpreting the Harriet Rosenstein archive, containing a vast amount of previously unavailable materials concerning Sylvia Plath, as a source of feminist literary recovery. It also investigates the digitization of this archive in the larger context of a digital turn in Plath studies, and a potential connection with feminist digital humanities. The archive contains a vast number of Sylvia Plath-related documents that have been recently opened to the public at Emory University after almost five decades. Rosenstein was a young researcher with feminist critical interests at the time she documented a projected Plath biography, and her work bears the mark of her ideological options and of a distinct intention to reshape the cultural discourse around Plath's status as a feminist icon. My aim is to investigate the feminist itinerary Rosenstein created in her archive in order to reveal Plath's essential role as a female writer articulating innovative perspectives on women's issues, mythologies and fundamental themes. The nature of online social behaviour is largely changing, from communications taking place on open platforms to interactions occurring in hidden, group-based spaces or closed fora. Boccia Artieri (2017) has called this the new geography of unsearchable small conversations. This transformation challenges our current understanding and application of research ethics in qualitative digital sociology because, on one hand, we can no longer lean upon the approaches used by social data science to handle big and open data and, on the other, we cannot exclusively rely on established practices in qualitative sociology. Academic inquiry into these closed messaging threads and fora, however, remains of great societal importance, not least because of the rise of hate and extreme content in such spaces. With researchers now facing increased barriers when accessing social media (such as having to register an account, the inability to enter a group or chat without being invited, and so on), a rethinking of some of the long-standing cornerstones of ethical research is required for the digital age. The paper makes a methodological contribution to this field by delivering an assessment tool based on the methodology of the project Online Hateful Youth Sociality, which explores the use of memes to share hate on social media. The tool bridges the perspectives of digital sociology, criminology, and digital humanities with ethnographic real-world research to address the ethical issues of disclosure and intrusiveness, harm, the public or private nature of online spaces, and informed consent in the context of researching behaviour in small and hard-to-reach online groups. The assessment tool is presented in the form of an ethical decision flowchart that advocates for an approach that is not only situated but also structured. Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (ChP&C) holds significant cultural value, representing integral aspects of both Chinese culture and global art. A considerable amount of ChP&C works are dispersed worldwide. With the emergence of digital humanities, a vast collection of cultural artifacts data is now available online. However, the online databases of these artifacts remain decentralized and diverse, posing significant challenges to their effective organization and utilization. Addressing this, our paper focuses on the Wu Men School of Painting and proposes a framework for constructing a multimodal knowledge graph for the ChP&C domain. We construct the domain ontology by analyzing the ChP&C knowledge schema. Then, we acquire knowledge from diverse data sources, including textual and visual information. To enhance data collection around collecting historical context and subject matter, we propose methods for seal extraction and subject extraction specific to ChP&C. We validate the effectiveness of these methods on the constructed dataset. Finally, we construct the Wu Men Multimodal Knowledge Graph (WuMKG) and implement applications such as cross-modal retrieval, knowledge-based question-answering and visualization. Ancient manuscripts store historical, literary, cultural, and geographical information. Therefore, the automatic analysis of manuscripts is of great interest in heritage culture and history preservation. Different approaches to handwriting recognition using images have been applied to analyze manuscripts. However, reliable handwriting recognition is a considerable challenge due to different factors related to the writer, the design, the script, the manuscript, and the economy. This paper presents the most relevant works in handwriting recognition using machine learning techniques. The contributions are: i) provide a review of previous research addressing handwriting recognition, ii) depict the general methodology using machine learning in handwriting recognition, iii) highlight relevant works at different levels of analysis (character, word, text line, and text block), iv) present handwriting datasets including the type of content they have, script and language, and v) present the importance and challenges in handwriting recognition. In the winter semester 2023/24, the authors of this article taught the seminar "Playful Numismatics. Computer game-based knowledge transfer of Roman coinage". The aim of the interdisciplinary course between the fields of Classical Archaeology/Ancient Numismatics and the Master's profile Digital Humanities was to develop computer games using the RPG Maker MV application. The games impart knowledge about Roman coinage and relevant background information about the Roman world in a playful way and at a low-threshold level for a broad audience. This paper presents the workflow of the project and the project's outcomes and discusses the potentials of serious games for teaching ancient numismatics in university context and to transmit knowledge about ancient coinage beyond academia to a non-specialist public audience. In the context of literary studies undergoing development, the works of Eileen Chang, a seminal Chinese-American writer, have garnered significant scholarly attention, reflecting her profound impact on modern Chinese literature. The study analyzed publication trends, high-frequency keywords, and the scholarly network, providing insights into the research status of Eileen Chang's works. The analysis revealed a disparity between Chinese and overseas research focuses, with Chinese scholars predominantly exploring themes such as Eileen Chang's works, feminist consciousness, and literary figures related to her. Overseas scholars, on the other hand, exhibit a broader research scope encompassing topics like translation, modern Chinese literature, and cultural aspects. The analysis highlighted the prominent scholars in the field and their publication patterns, indicating the emergence of new scholars in recent years. Based on the findings, this study proposed suggestions for future researchers, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, international collaboration, comparative studies, utilization of digital humanities, and exploration of underrepresented topics. The “Eight Scenic Views Paintings” represent crucial visual materials for investigating the history of cultural landscapes. However, traditional methods of interpreting materials struggle to discern the inherent connections between different landscape elements. This study proposes an approach for deconstructing historical images, taking the example of the Forty Scenic Views in the Late Ming Dynasty in Nanjing, China. To explore the co-occurrence structure, hierarchical clustering, and correlation features among various elements, various digital humanities quantification methods were applied, including spatial analysis of ArcGIS, co-occurrence and clustering of KH Coder, and correlation analysis of SPSS. This study reveals the characteristics of the landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming: natural landscape as the foundation, artificial landscape as the core, and advocating tradition as the fashion. It also uncovers the landscape order: mountains, waters, and scenic views interweaved and coexisted, as well as nature and culture intertwined and clustered. In addition, multiple information graphs of the subordinate and co-occurrence relationships of 20 landscape elements were constructed, 5 landscape paradigms were extracted, and 36 pairs of related relationships were discovered, deepening the historical understanding of the urban landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming. This paper puts forward the idea of analyzing historical images by digital method, which provides some essential and detailed historical basis for explaining the value of cultural landscape heritage and shaping contemporary urban landscape. The documentation and visualization of ephemeral CH, especially for World's Fairs architecture, remains a neglected endeavor on the global scale. While digital products like 3D models find extensive application in CH, the use of a WebGIS has scarcely been explored in this domain. When a WebGIS is used for CH, it serves to communicate the output of research, not as a tool to support the development of the research itself. Moreover, aspects like procedural development for the creation of a WebGIS platform, its upgrading, and its long-term preservation are key factors for the maintenance of the digital tool, but they have scarcely been considered in the literature. Through the Turin 1911 project, this paper defines a procedure for the creation of a WebGIS for ephemeral architectural documentation, showing how a WebGIS platform can be designed, implemented, tested, and maintained. The novelty of this study lies in the creation of a 2D/3D WebGIS based on a tailored spatial database; the WebGIS is coupled with a dedicated website for the constant updating of the research data documenting the Turin 1911 International Exposition. The discussion emphasizes the transformative role of a WebGIS in not only sharing information but also serving as a dynamic platform for conducting digital humanities studies in 3D environments. Galleries, libraries, archives, and museums are nowadays striving to implement innovative approaches to adequately use and distribute the wealth of knowledge found in cultural heritage. A range of technologies can be used to enhance the viewing experience for visitors and boost the expertise of museologists, art historians, scholars, and audience members. The present work aims to provide an overview of current methods and most pertinent studies addressing the use of the innovative technologies for enhancing the fruition of artifacts in traditional museums in an effort to improve the public experience and education. For all the technologies discussed, the paper focuses on the main results obtained in literature and on their possible implementation in the museal context. The overview demonstrates the liveliness of the world of research in the field of technologies for the digital development of museums and how many technologies commonly used in industry are increasingly finding their way into the cultural sphere. This article explores how Digital Humanities methodologies can be applied to historical travelogues and highlights the potential of these technologies to provide new insights into historical data. It summarizes the experiences acquired through various research tasks undertaken by the interdisciplinary project team "Digital Editions of Historical Travelogues" (DEHisRe), funded by the German Research Council (DFG) from 2021 to 2024. Based on an iterative case study of handwritten travel journals from the early 19th century, the authors outline the six-step "Life Cycle of Digital Editing". The proliferation of digital communication has profoundly transformed the landscape of persuasive discourse. Online platforms have amplified the reach and impact of persuasive techniques. However, they have also enabled the rapid spread of manipulative content, targeted propaganda, and divisive rhetoric. Consequently, a wide range of computational approaches has emerged to address the multifaceted nature of digital persuasion, to detect and mitigate its harmful practices. In light of this, the paper surveys computational methods for detecting persuasive means in digital communication, focusing on how they integrate humanistic knowledge to operationalize this construct. Additionally, special emphasis is placed on models' explainability, a pivotal aspect considering these models are used by institutions to influence societal interactions. For the analysis, two primary perspectives in persuasion are defined: linguistic and argumentative. The linguistic approach analyzes specific textual features, allowing for highly accountable algorithms based on explicit rules. The argumentative approach focuses on broader persuasive mechanisms, offering greater scalability but often resulting in less explainable models due to their complexity. This tension between model sophistication and explainability presents a key challenge in developing effective and transparent persuasion detection systems. The results highlight the spectrum of methodologies for studying persuasion, ranging from analyzing stylistic elements to detecting explicitly propagandist messages. Our findings highlight two key challenges in using these algorithms to tackle societal issues of persuasion misuse: the opacity of deep learning models and the absence of a theoretically grounded distinction between vicious and virtuous persuasion. To address these challenges, we propose integrating social sciences and humanities theories to enhance the effectiveness and ethical robustness of persuasion detection systems. This interdisciplinary approach enables a more nuanced characterization of text, facilitating the differentiation between vicious and virtuous persuasion through analysis of rhetorical, argumentative, and emotional aspects. We emphasize the potential of hybrid approaches that combine rule-based methods with deep learning techniques, as these offer a promising avenue for implementing this interdisciplinary framework. The paper concludes by outlining future challenges, including the importance of multimodal and multilingual analysis, ethical considerations in handling user-generated data and the growing challenge of distinguishing between human and AI-generated persuasive content.

Digital labour (DL) in the context of digital humanities (DH) broadly comprises the process of data collection, curation, analysis, and visualization, leading to the creation of a final project. DL, when analyzed from an Indian DH perspective, consists of humanities scholars acquiring additional technical knowledge required for the research, finding suitable resources (technical and otherwise), infrastructures, and collaborating with other disciplines, etc. This DL, together with manual labour (ML) of writing about outcomes (Anderson et al. 2016), is complicated and time-consuming for DH scholars. Yet DL gets recognized due to the nascent state of DH in the subcontinent. Despite the evident DL involved in the creation and successful proliferation of DH projects, it is seldom addressed in academic scholarship (Anderson et al. 2016) and even more rarely in Indian DH academia. The lack of proper infrastructure (Anderson et al. 2016) and deficiency in technical knowledge (Thangavel and Menon 2020) have resulted in a greater DL among the DH practitioners in India when compared to their peers elsewhere, yet it has gone unrecognized, given the lack of literature and research on DL in Indian DH. The existing resistance in humanities towards accommodating the new approaches of DH (Greetham 2012) has made DL manifold. In an effort to recognize DL in DH, this paper attempts a definition of DL in DH, especially in the Indian context, followed by a broad classification of digital labourers (DLers) in DH in India. The paper utilizes a case study of selected DH projects in India to understand the gaps in recognizing the DLers and DL in Indian DH projects, especially the DL of students and researchers. The findings from the case study further lead to the proposal of a possible framework to address the emergence and evolving nature of DL in DH, as well as to compensate for the same appropriately. Le travail numérique (TN) dans le contexte des humanités numériques (HN) comprend largement le processus de collecte, de conservation, d'analyse et de visualisation des données, menant à la création d'un projet final. Lorsqu'il est analysé du point de vue des HN indiennes, le travail numérique consiste pour les chercheurs en sciences humaines à acquérir des connaissances techniques supplémentaires nécessaires à la recherche, à trouver des ressources appropriées (techniques et autres), des infrastructures et à collaborer avec d'autres disciplines, etc. Ce TN, ainsi que le travail manuel (TM) de rédaction des résultats (Anderson et al. 2016), est compliqué et prend du temps pour les chercheurs en HN. Pourtant, le TN est reconnu en raison de l'état naissant des HN dans le sous-continent. Malgré l'implication évidente du TN dans la création et la prolifération réussie des projets d'humanités numériques, il est rarement abordé dans les travaux universitaires (Anderson et al. 2016) et encore plus rarement dans les universités indiennes spécialisées dans les HN. L'article utilise une étude de cas de projets HN sélectionnés en Inde pour comprendre les lacunes dans la reconnaissance des travailleurs numériques et des TN dans les projets HN indiens, en particulier les TN des étudiants et des chercheurs. Les résultats de l'étude de cas conduisent en outre à la proposition d'un cadre possible pour aborder l'émergence et la nature évolutive des TN dans HN, ainsi que pour compenser ces mêmes TN de manière appropriée.

Sewing Pouch on the Run: Lenngren, Text Reuse, and Recontextualizations This article is tracing a newspaper poem, originally published in 1795 in the section for lost and found, and reprinted repeatedly in newspapers in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The poem describes a girl who has lost a pouch with her sewing kit on a walk through Stockholm. The one who returns it is promised two sugar breads and a kiss as a reward. It was published anonymously but Anna Maria Lenngren was later identified as the author. Following the poem from paper to paper reveals a network of text reuse where texts were borrowed, edited and recontextualized. Several papers all around Sweden published the verse as an anonymous advertisement from 1837 to 1868. Yet, among other things, the editors also changed the place name mentioned in the poem to make it seem as if it was written by a local girl. Another version of the text was widely circulated in papers from 1887 to 1917. This version was truer to the original wording of the poem, but it was published along with an anecdote identifying Lenngren herself as the girl in the text, making it part of her own marriage proposal. This time the poem was placed in the section for humorous titbits, among gossip and funny stories. The different versions of the poem illustrate how newspapers could function as a medium for literature in the nineteenth century. The practice of text reuse had the potential of maximizing the readership but could also mean that authors lost control over their words. When poems became “fugitive verses” in the network of newspapers, they entered a fluid state where authorships were destabilized and texts were recontextualized to fit on the newspaper page.

Background (Pop/Rock is experiencing deep transformations caused by the emergence of Web 2.0 and the online social networks, streaming services and the proliferation of TV contests. Cover songs afford the opportunity to explore how these changes would result in a new revalorization of Pop and Dance music. The aim of this paper is to find evidence of a changing pattern in cover songs by 21st-century artists. To this end, over 76,000 covers performed by artists who grew up in the 2000s were quantitatively analyzed. Methods SecondHandSongs.com was crawled to extract the cover relationships, and Allmusic.com to obtain the genre and starting decade of each performer. Results The results show that the current music panorama is dominated by Pop/Rock music and, for the first time since the 1960s, artists from the 2010s generation prefer to cover more songs by contemporary artists than by classic figures from the 1960s. Pop and Dance are the emerging sub-genres with the largest proportion of covered musicians, while Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran are responsible for this changing trend. Conclusions These results provide an interesting opportunity to introduce quantitative studies in cultural studies about music, cinema and arts.

The present study extract, map and compare the lexical and semantic similarity of terms from author-provided keywords with machine extracted terms and topics from titles and abstracts of an inter-disciplinary field like 'digital humanities'. Author-provided terms (keywords) were first extracted and mapped through visualization software like Gephi and then these extracted terms were compared with terms extracted from title and abstract of the research articles through NLP based statistical modules. Also, the interdisciplinary of significant topics were measured through the Brillouin index. A set of 7483 articles downloaded from Scopus database on the domain of digital humanities and its associated fields were used for the purpose. We observed the researches on digital humanities are spread over a considerable number of concepts like 'Industry 4.0', 'topic modelling, 'open science'. Further, the machine algorithm-based extraction compared and identified a larger lexical similarity between these author-provided keywords and title-extracted keywords, rather than abstract-extracted keywords. Jaccard similarity of all author-keywords with machine extracted title keywords came 0.83 and SBERT BiEncoder_score was 0.7374. The top research areas extracted from titles, through unsupervised approach of term extraction resulted in topics like digital humanities approach, digital humanities visualization, indicating a strong connection to the discipline of digital humanities. The average interdisciplinarity index of top significant topics came between 1.217 and 1.284, with the highest index value for 'computational digital humanities'. As this study is based on real-world data, it is highly useful to understand how far machine algorithm-based text extraction can be helpful for information retrieval process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multilingual expression is not exclusive to scholars in the (digital) humanities, but it is a lived reality of a great number of people around the world. The authors of this article argue that there is a specific role to be played by the digital humanist in describing and modelling the design of workflows that assume multilinguality (and multiscriptual and multidirectional practices). This work cannot be left only to the tech industry and commercial interests. On the other hand, the larger community of digital humanists is not fully aware of the issues that multilingual users and communities face. In this paper we argue that one way this can be done most effectively in these early stages is by user persona creation.Our method is to perceive the problem from a UX (user experience) persona design point of view. The present paper synthesizes our efforts to date in creating data-driven UX profiles (based upon our insights drawn from a survey, multiple interactive workshops, an open forum series organized by the authors, and a workshop at the DH Unbound conference 2022), which aim to capture shared experiences of multilingual DH textual research, recognizing how such multilinguality might appear as a marginal phenomenon. Also drawing on research in persona studies, our paper attempts to theorize the UX profile of each specific persona, not in isolation, but in interaction with other users, bringing those personas into dialogue. The purpose of this dialogue is to centre multilingual voices with shared concerns in the scholarly community of DH. We argue that so-called “marginal” multilingual cases constitute a much larger proportion of the scholarly community than is commonly believed, and as such, we must distinguish such cases from the concept of “edge cases” in UX product development research.At the same time, in such interaction between personas, conflicts emerge. Both shared and conflicting concerns are the most interesting results of our inquiry. This is why we have chosen to present our results in the form of a fictional plenary discussion to explore what new spaces of possibility can be created in the global DH community. On the other hand, for once, a diversity of these global, multilingual voices is actually recorded for the larger community, and we hope they provide it with a starting point for inclusive discussions about infrastructure and multilinguality. In sum, we argue that user persona creation can be an effective tool for familiarizing the larger community of digital humanists with the issues that multilingual users and communities face.L'expression multilingue n'est pas l'apanage des chercheurs en sciences humaines (numériques), mais constitue une réalité vécue par un grand nombre de personnes dans le monde. Le présent article synthétise les efforts que nous avons déployés à ce jour pour créer des profils UX fondés sur des données (sur la base de nos observations tirées d'une enquête, de multiples ateliers interactifs, d'une série de forums ouverts organisés par les auteurs et d'un atelier organisé lors de la conférence DH Unbound 2022), qui visent à capturer les expériences partagées de la recherche textuelle multilingue en DH, en reconnaissant la façon dont cette multilingualité peut apparaître comme un phénomène marginal. S'inspirant également de la recherche sur les personas, notre article tente de théoriser le profil UX de chaque persona spécifique, non pas de manière isolée, mais en interaction avec d'autres utilisateurs, en faisant dialoguer ces personas. L'objectif de ce dialogue est de faire entendre des voix multilingues partageant les mêmes préoccupations au sein de la communauté scientifique des Humanités Numériques. Nous soutenons que les cas multilingues dits "marginaux" constituent une proportion beaucoup plus importante de la communauté scientifique qu'on ne le croit généralement, et qu'à ce titre, nous devons distinguer ces cas du concept de "cas marginaux" dans la recherche sur le développement de produits UX.Dans le même temps, l'interaction entre les personas fait émerger des conflits. Les préoccupations partagées et conflictuelles sont les résultats les plus intéressants de notre enquête. C'est pourquoi nous avons choisi de présenter nos résultats sous la forme d'une discussion plénière fictive afin d'explorer les nouveaux espaces de possibilités qui peuvent être créés dans la communauté mondiale des Humanités Numériques. Whether a document is of historical or contemporary significance, typography plays a crucial role in its composition. From the early days of modern printing, typographic techniques have evolved and transformed, resulting in changes to the features of typography. By analyzing these features, we can gain insights into specific time periods, geographical locations, and messages conveyed through typography. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to investigate the feasibility of training a model to classify serif typeswithout knowledge of the font and character. We also investigate how to train a vectorial-based image model able to group together fonts with similar features. Specifically, we compare the use of state-of-theart image classification methods, such as the EfficientNet-B2 and the Vision Transformer Base model with different patch sizes, and the state-of-the-art fine-grained image classification method, TransFG, on the serif classification task. We also evaluate the use of the DeepSVG model to learn to group fonts with similar features. This paper presents how we enhanced the accessibility and utility of historical linguistic data in the project Bullinger Digital. The project involved the transformation of 3,100 letters, primarily available as scanned PDFs, into a dynamic, fully digital format. The expanded digital collection now includes 12,000 letters, 3,100 edited, 5,400 transcribed, and 3,500 represented through detailed metadata and results from handwritten text recognition. Central to our discussion is the innovative workflow developed for this multilingual corpus. This includes strategies for text normalisation, machine translation, and handwritten text recognition, particularly focusing on the challenges of code-switching within historical documents. The resulting digital platform features an advanced search system, offering users various filtering options such as correspondent names, time periods, languages, and locations. It also incorporates fuzzy and exact search capabilities, with the ability to focus searches within specific text parts, like summaries or footnotes. Beyond detailing the technical process, this paper underscores the project’s contribution to historical research and digital humanities. While the Bullinger Digital platform serves as a model for similar projects, the corpus behind it demonstrates the vast potential for data reuse in historical linguistics. The project exemplifies how digital humanities methodologies can revitalise historical text collections, offering researchers access to and interaction with historical data. This paper aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of our project’s scope and broader implications for the field of digital humanities, highlighting the transformative potential of such digital endeavours in historical linguistic research.

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset comprising annotations generated by the Google Vision API for approximately 105,000 frames extracted from 15 Alfred Hitchcock films. These annotations include information about object detection, facial recognition, web-entity analysis, and explicit content filtering. With potential applications in the digital humanities and film studies, this dataset enables researchers to not only explore and evaluate cinematic content but also the ways that it resurfaces in various cultural contexts online. The paper provides a detailed account of the dataset creation process, which involved the decryption of the DVD, frame extraction, and costs of annotations. Additionally, the paper outlines future research possibilities based on the dataset. These include statistical analysis of frame content and labels to identify patterns and trends, comparisons of different computer vision algorithms to assess their accuracy and effectiveness, and the utilization of bipartite networks to explore mise-en-scene in films.

Often, artists of all time periods have unintentionally crystallized in their works the image of landscapes distant in time; of those landscapes, sometimes only faint traces remain, adding to the collection of so-called indirect sources. In many cases, a critical analysis carried out using the comparative method of those iconographic sources allows the inference of the relevant information regarding the layout of places, the structures housed there, and the practice of arts and crafts, or about customs and habits (e.g., dressing, eating, etc.); it is possible to recompose the so-called 'buried landscapes' by combining it with, and thanks to, the substantial contributions of other disciplines (such as history, archaeology, and anthropology). This contribution shows the first outcomes of research carried out within the Ghibertiana Project by CHMlab of DIDA (UNIFI), which aims to analyze the 'landscape characterised by cultivated areas' from the Florentine countryside in the early fifteenth century. In particular, it is maintained that Lorenzo Ghiberti (Pelago, 1378–Florence, 1455), just like other contemporary artists, depicted territories and architectures he had first experienced in some of the ten bronze panels of the Gates of Paradise of the Baptistery of Florence. He described in great detail the flora, fauna, and anthropic structures of the extra moenia territory. The focus of the early stage of analysis and this contribution is mainly on shelters: temporary structures functional to agricultural work. Cultural heritage crowdsourcing has emerged as a promising approach to address the challenges of digitizing and preserving cultural heritage, contributing to the sustainable development goals of cultural preservation and digital inclusivity. However, the long-term sustainability of these projects faces numerous obstacles. This study explores the key configurational determinants and dynamic evolutionary mechanisms driving the sustainable development of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects, aiming to enhance their longevity and impact. An innovative integration of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and system dynamics (SD) is employed, drawing upon a "resource coordination–stakeholder interaction–value co-creation" analytical framework. Through a multi-case comparison of 18 cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects, we identify necessary conditions for project sustainability, including platform support, data resources, knowledge capital, and digitalization performance. The study reveals multiple sufficient pathways to sustainability through configurational combinations of participant motivation, innovation drive, social capital, and social impact. Our system dynamics analysis demonstrates that crowdsourcing project sustainability exhibits significant nonlinear dynamic characteristics, influenced by the interaction and emergent effects of the resource–participation–performance chain. This research offers both theoretical insights and practical guidance for optimizing crowdsourcing mechanisms and sustainable project operations, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable cultural heritage preservation and digital humanities development. The findings provide a roadmap for policymakers and project managers to design and implement more sustainable and impactful cultural heritage crowdsourcing initiatives, aligning with global sustainability objectives in the digital age. Bureaucratic neutrality norms render emotions problematic in the workplace largely due to presumptions that emotions cloud reasoning. This article traces the origins of bureaucratic neutrality to 17th-century Cartesian mind/body dualism. However, in Descartes's correspondence with contemporary philosopher Elisabeth of Bohemia, he retreats from strict dualism in reaction to her argument that emotions may actually inform decision making. Elisabeth's critique stays lost to history due in part to the epistemological sexism underpinning bureaucratic neutrality and public administration. Structural Topic Modeling reveals embodied reasoning and interpersonal interdependence in Elisabeth's critique, undermining the strict mind/body dualism that lurks in both bureaucratic neutrality and public administration. Abstract Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (ChP&C) holds significant cultural value, representing integral aspects of both Chinese culture and global art. A considerable amount of ChP&C works are dispersed worldwide. With the emergence of digital humanities, a vast collection of cultural artifacts data is now available online. However, the online databases of these artifacts remain decentralized and diverse, posing significant challenges to their effective organization and utilization. Addressing this, our paper focuses on the Wu Men School of Painting and proposes a framework for constructing a multimodal knowledge graph for the ChP&C domain. We construct the domain ontology by analyzing the ChP&C knowledge schema. Then, we acquire knowledge from diverse data sources, including textual and visual information. To enhance data collection around collecting historical context and subject matter, we propose methods for seal extraction and subject extraction specific to ChP&C. We validate the effectiveness of these methods on the constructed dataset. Finally, we construct the Wu Men Multimodal Knowledge Graph (WuMKG) and implement applications such as cross-modal retrieval, knowledge-based question-answering and visualization.

This paper examines the dissemination of Cartesianism in the 17th century by studying the networks of authors in the field of natural philosophy. Key figures who spread knowledge and innovated the field are identified and contextualized. Furthermore, the network analysis shows how different ways of thinking coexisted within the social networks of early modern natural philosophers. To achieve this methodologically, originally bipartite networks were projected into author-to-author networks that were divided into time slices. Measurements of centrality and assortativity were used to determine prominence and diversity, which were complemented and refined with close reading. The findings reveal not only cliques of geographically connected authors, but also an overall highly connected field. Additionally, assortativity indicates a moderate tendency toward homophily in the authors’ connections to others within the same philosophical tradition. The study furthermore identifies that central authors were predominantly eclectic or Cartesian, suggesting that Cartesianism was driven by such individuals in structurally well-connected positions.

This paper introduces principles for the application and challenges of small data ethnography in digital research. It discusses the need to incorporate ethics in every step of the research process. As teachers and researchers within the digital humanities, we argue for the value of a qualitative approach to digital contents, spaces, and phenomena. Throughout history, various alternative approaches have been considered that conceptualize the dialogue between architectural objects and their sites. This study explores whether this conceptual richness is reflected in Turkey’s contemporary architectural agenda by focusing mainly on the period from 1990 to the present. The Mimarlık Journal, one of Turkey’s leading architectural journals, was chosen as the object of investigation, presenting the contemporary written language of academics and professionals. In this research, relevant and current literature was first reviewed to identify site-related terms (place, settlement, local, topography, context, environment, nature, history, social, culture and identity) as a toolkit for analyzing the Mimarlık Journal. The analysis of the toolkit has led to the creation of a digital database via the application of digital humanities methods of manual text mining and critical reading to highlight the diversity and richness of sites’ language(s). The result is the mapping of the terms used in context to understand the diversity, actors, and systems of thought in site narrative. The results show that the discussions in the journal mainly focus on the critique of contemporary architectural practices, rather than theoretically expanding the topic and drawing on production in fields such as art, philosophy, and anthropology. The discussions in the journal refer to the canonical texts of international literature in the field of architectural theory and urbanism between the 1960s and the 1990s. However, there is an evident lack of current sources in the bibliographies, which shows that systems and patterns of thought do not change simultaneously. This study shows that the mapping and deep reading of journal articles represent a very effective research method in the field of architecture by contributing to the site narrative while making apparent the diversity and richness of its language. Tibetan Buddhism, as an indigenous religion, has a significant and far-reaching influence in the Tibetan areas of China. This study, focusing on Lhasa, explores the integration of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual perceptions within urban spaces. Employing a novel approach that combines street view data and deep learning technology, the research aims to identify and map the spatial distribution of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual sites against the backdrop of the urban landscape. Our analysis reveals a notable concentration of these spiritual places near urban architectural and cultural heritage areas, highlighting the profound connection between residents' cultural life and spiritual practices. Despite challenges posed by modern urbanisation, these spiritual sites demonstrate resilience and adaptability, continuing to serve as cultural and spiritual pillars of the Tibetan Buddhist community. This study contributes to the fields of urban planning, religious studies, and digital humanities by demonstrating the potential of technology in examining the impact of urban development on cultural and religious landscapes. The research underscores the importance of protecting and integrating spaces of spiritual perception in urban development planning. It shows that safeguarding these spaces is crucial not only for cultural heritage preservation but also for achieving sustainable urban development and social harmony. This study opens new avenues for interdisciplinary research, advocating for a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between urban development and spiritual spaces from psychological, sociological, and environmental science perspectives. This article provides an account of the making of KBLab, the data lab at the National Library of Sweden (KB). The first part discusses the work involved in establishing a lab as both a physical and a digital site for researchers to use digital collections at previously unimaginable scales. The second part explains how the lab has deployed the library's collections as data to produce high quality Swedish AI models, which constitute a significant new form of digital research infrastructure. We situate this work in the context of uneven AI coverage for smaller languages, and consider how the lab's models have contributed to the making of important AI infrastructure for the Swedish language. The paper presents the research, development, and some of the major implementations to date of the web-based platform for intelligent cultural content management CultIS. It is an innovative environment providing descriptive cataloging, subject indexing, intelligent data retrieval, curation and collection development aimed at meeting the functional needs associated with the growing expectations of users of cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and other providers of cultural and historical heritage. Based on the implementations of CultIS for different purposes and contexts, not only its effectiveness, stability and reliability are tested, but the results also serve for its constant development and improvement.

Abstract The “Eight Scenic Views Paintings” represent crucial visual materials for investigating the history of cultural landscapes. However, traditional methods of interpreting materials struggle to discern the inherent connections between different landscape elements. This study proposes an approach for deconstructing historical images, taking the example of the Forty Scenic Views in the Late Ming Dynasty in Nanjing, China. To explore the co-occurrence structure, hierarchical clustering, and correlation features among various elements, various digital humanities quantification methods were applied, including spatial analysis of ArcGIS, co-occurrence and clustering of KH Coder, and correlation analysis of SPSS. This study reveals the characteristics of the landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming: natural landscape as the foundation, artificial landscape as the core, and advocating tradition as the fashion. It also uncovers the landscape order: mountains, waters, and scenic views interweaved and coexisted, as well as nature and culture intertwined and clustered. In addition, multiple information graphs of the subordinate and co-occurrence relationships of 20 landscape elements were constructed, 5 landscape paradigms were extracted, and 36 pairs of related relationships were discovered, deepening the historical understanding of the urban landscape construction of Nanjing in the Late Ming. This paper puts forward the idea of analyzing historical images by digital method, which provides some essential and detailed historical basis for explaining the value of cultural landscape heritage and shaping contemporary urban landscape.

The documentation and visualization of ephemeral CH, especially for World’s Fairs architecture, remains a neglected endeavor on the global scale. While digital products like 3D models find extensive application in CH, the use of a WebGIS has scarcely been explored in this domain. When a WebGIS is used for CH, it serves to communicate the output of research, not as a tool to support the development of the research itself. Moreover, aspects like procedural development for the creation of a WebGIS platform, its upgrading, and its long-term preservation are key factors for the maintenance of the digital tool, but they have scarcely been considered in the literature. Through the Turin 1911 project, this paper defines a procedure for the creation of a WebGIS for ephemeral architectural documentation, showing how a WebGIS platform can be designed, implemented, tested, and maintained. The novelty of this study lies in the creation of a 2D/3D WebGIS based on a tailored spatial database; the WebGIS is coupled with a dedicated website for the constant updating of the research data documenting the Turin 1911 International Exposition. The discussion emphasizes the transformative role of a WebGIS in not only sharing information but also serving as a dynamic platform for conducting digital humanities studies in 3D environments.

From the late 1940s onwards, humanities scholars used computers in order to create new types of research instruments, e.g., databases, digital scholarly editions of texts and/or archives, computer programs, etc. Their ambitions in doing so consisted in saving time in tedious, repetitive and error-prone scholarly tasks, enhancing the circulation of data and/or scholarly information, or even contributing to the progress of an entire discipline. Sharing these research instruments with interested colleagues was then crucial for these scholars. However, each of these humanities computing collectives developed at the time its own idiosyncratic procedures for editing, analyzing, and publishing computer-recorded material. This profoundly affected the possibility for these research instruments to circulate among scholars. In this article, I present how medievalists debated about a possible circulation of these digital research instruments in that context, and how it contributes to the development of an early humanities computing organization in Europe. I show how medievalists' ambitions raised a whole series of material and intellectual difficulties which are still essential in our current DH practices and organizations. What data should we edit (and thus, what data are worth sharing)? In what form should we publish these datasets? And do we need common rules for this purpose? I argue that a precise history of early DH communities highlights a strong continuity with contemporary DH issues as well as the importance of historical studies of our field. This article unpacks the archival, textual, and encoded layers that comprise the Maria Edgeworth Letters Project (MELP), an open-access digital archive containing the correspondence of the Anglo-Irish Regency author Maria Edgeworth and her circle. These layers reveal the impossibility of flattening or standardizing our work and instead advocate for a more inclusive and collaborative digital humanities model that accommodates both institutional and volunteer labor. Just as different methods were used to approach each archive and manage our project across multiple institutions, each transcription requires a different level of care, especially as various notes and collaborators are cited in the final project. Through the use of TEI, we can flexibly represent diverse aspects of each letter while still maintaining a database-readable structure. We endeavor to connect each person, place, or work identified in Edgeworth 's letters and our database to a larger network of linked data in order to place our project in conversation with other archival resources. For entities that are unidentified or unknown, we create new name authority files or produce internal data files that can be viewed by our collaborators and users. MELP 's flexible structure thus allows it to strive for interoperability while refusing to efface the individual traces of its collaborators, entities, and material artifacts. Die Verbindungslinien zwischen Digital Humanities (DH) und Literaturdidaktik sind in Anbetracht des geringen Umfangs bisheriger Ansätze nicht unmittelbar evident. Deswegen thematisiert der erste Teil des vorliegenden Beitrags Berührungspunkte für eine weiterführende literatur- und mediendidaktische Auseinandersetzung. Der zweite Teil skizziert ergänzend Parallelen in der Entwicklung von wissenschaftlicher Methodik im Spiegel der Mediengeschichte und fragt, wie man die eigene Forschungsgeschichte erzählt, wozu der Begriff der ‚Schwellisierung‘ vorgeschlagen wird. Auf diesen Grundlagen wird eine Arbeitsdefinition für literaturdidaktische DH erstellt. Hence, the first part of the paper at hand addresses potential overlaps for an advanced approach in literature and media didactics. The second part outlines further parallels considering the development of scientific methods as reflected in media history and asking how to tell one’s own history of research. In this context, the article proposes to frame such links as processes of ‘thresholdisation’ and outlines a working definition of DH in literature didactics. The third and last part discusses examples of DH against this background focusing on quantitative analyses of curricula (distant and scalable reading respectively).

The SIAPVA is a project with a marked digital character in which the acquisition of data obtained through invasive (archaeological excavation) and non-invasive (3D laser scanner, drone and GPS) methodologies is integrated. The records of the different sources of information converge in a GIS in which all the documentation is managed. Within the framework of a new phase of research on the archaeological site, the study undertaken is based on Digital Humanities approach. The real power lies in the fact that reports, invaluable archival photographs and plans exists digitally.
