Booming UK ownership of designer-crossbreed dogs resulting from intentional crossing of distinct purebred breeds is often motivated by perceived enhanced health, despite limited evidence supporting a strong 'hybrid vigour' effect in dogs. Improved evidence on the relative health of designer-crossbreed dogs could support prospective owners to make better acquisition decisions when choosing their new dog. This study used a cross-sectional survey of UK owners of three common designer-crossbreeds (Cavapoo, Cockapoo, and Labradoodle) and their progenitor breeds (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, and Poodle) to collect owner-reported health disorder information. The authors hypothesised that designer-crossbred breeds have lower odds of common disorders compared to their progenitor breeds. Multivariable analysis accounted for confounding between breeds: dog age, sex, neuter status, and owner age and gender. The odds for the 57 most common disorders were compared across the three designer-crossbreeds with each of their two progenitor breeds (342 comparisons). Valid responses were received for 9,402 dogs. The odds did not differ statistically significantly between the designer-crossbreeds and their relevant progenitor breeds in 86.6% (n = 296) of health comparisons. Designer-crossbreeds had higher odds for 7.0% (n = 24) of disorders studied, and lower odds for 6.4% (n = 22). These findings suggest limited differences in overall health status between the three designer-crossbreeds and their purebred progenitors, challenging widespread beliefs in positive hybrid vigour effects for health in this emerging designer-crossbreed demographic. Equally, the current study did not suggest that designer-crossbreeds have poorer health as has also been purported. Therefore, owners could more appropriately base acquisition decisions between designer-crossbreeds and their purebred progenitors on other factors important to canine welfare such as breeding conditions, temperament, conformation and health of parents. Television series enhance the social visibility of their content, as is the case with Queen Elizabeth II and The Crown. Netflix is the streaming television platform that has turned Peter Morgan's successful series (2016) into a television icon where the monarch is the main protagonist, taking us on a biographical journey that mixes the historical and the political with fiction. The main character is made to seem more humane and is brought closer to the general public, all of which leads to a transmedia narrative. This research aims to analyze the content of the messages published on Twitter during the days surrounding the Queen's State funeral in September 2022 and their connection with the series through the hashtag #TheCrown. The topics that have become trends worldwide are quantitatively analyzed, using different digital tools. The sample collected 1,489,279 tweets published during the days from the announcement of the death of Elizabeth II to the day of her funeral (from 8 to 19 September 2022). The results show nodes of connection between different players and linked communities to #TheCrown while offering the traffic generated by the hashtag with different nodes and edges. Previous research suggests that sharing emotionally intense experiences with others, for example by undergoing dysphoric collective rituals together, can lead to "identity fusion," a visceral feeling of oneness that predicts group cohesion and self-sacrifice for the group. In this pre-registered research, we provide the first quantitative investigation of identity fusion following participation in a national funeral, surveying 1632 members of the British public. As predicted, individuals reporting intense sadness during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral exhibited higher levels of identity fusion and pro-group commitment, as evidenced by generosity pledges to a British Monarchist charity. Also consistent with our hypotheses, feelings of unity in grief and emotional sharedness during the event mediated the relationship between sadness intensity and pro-group commitment. These findings shed light on importance of collective rituals in fostering group cohesion, cooperation, and the dynamics of shared emotional experiences within communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a linguistic and semiotic study of the newspaper front pages that reported the death of Queen Elizabeth II. A sample of 61 front pages was collected from various British and non-British newspapers on Friday 9 September, 2022. The headlines reporting the death of the Queen were linguistically analysed focusing on euphemistic means. The pictures accompanying the headlines were semiotically investigated to see how the Queen was visually mourned and if there were any subtle semiotic euphemisms. Reporting the death of the Queen, linguistic and semiotic polarities can be observed on the newspaper front pages under investigation: direct versus indirect reporting. The findings reveal that 70.5% of the headlines reported the tragic news indirectly avoiding the verb ‘die’, the noun ‘death’ and the adjective ‘dead’. Similarly, the semiotic analysis shows that more newspapers displayed coloured (67%) recent (57%) pictures of the Queen showing her cheerful (56%). Avoiding the words ‘die’, ‘death’ and ‘dead’ and displaying the Queen in coloured cheerful pictures demonstrate that newspapers favoured both subtle linguistic and semiotic euphemisms in reporting the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The findings illustrate how humans, consciously and unconsciously, safeguard themselves against the discourse of death by utilizing both linguistic and semiotic euphemisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The delivery of Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) and attaining evidence-based treatment goals are challenging in developing countries, such as Malawi. The aims of this study were to (i) assess the effects of exercise training/ CR programme on cardiorespiratory and functional capacity of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), and (ii) examine the effectiveness of a novel, hybrid CR delivery using integrated supervised hospital- and home-based caregiver approaches. Methods: A pre-registered (UMIN000045380), randomised controlled trial of CR exercise therapy in patients with CHF was conducted between September 2021 and May 2022. Sixty CHF participants were randomly assigned into a parallel design-exercise therapy (ET) (n = 30) or standard of care (n = 30) groups. Resting hemodynamics, oxygen saturation, distance walked in six-minutes (6MWD) and estimated peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak) constituted the outcome measures. The exercise group received supervised, group, circuit-based ET once weekly within the hospital setting and prescribed home-based exercise twice weekly for 12 weeks. Participants in both arms received a group-based, health behaviour change targeted education (usual care) at baseline, 8-, 12- and 16-weeks. Results: Most of the participants were female (57%) with a mean age of 51.9 ±15.7 years. Sixty-five percent (65%) were in New York Heart Association class III, mostly with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF) (mean Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction 52.9 ±10.6%). The 12-weeks ET led to significant reductions in resting haemodynamic measures (all P <0.05). The ET showed significantly higher improvements in the 6MWD (103.6 versus 13.9 m, p<0.001) and VO2 peak (3.0 versus 0.4 ml·kg-1·min-1, p <0.001). Significant improvements in 6MWD and VO2 peak (both p<0.001), in favour of ET, were also observed across all follow-up timepoints. Conclusion: This novel, randomised, hybrid ET-based CR, delivered to mainly HFpEF patients using an integrated hospital- and home-based approach effectively improved exercise tolerance, cardiorespiratory fitness capacities and reduced perceived exertion in a resource-limited setting. The Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) serves as both a source and a sink for sea ice from the Arctic Ocean, while also exporting sea ice into Baffin Bay. We use observations from Sentinel-1, RADARSAT-2, the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM), and CryoSat-2, together with the Canadian Ice Service ice charts, to quantify sea ice transport and replenishment across and within the CAA from 2016 to 2022. We also provide the first estimates of the ice area and volume flux within the CAA from the Queen Elizabeth Islands to Parry Channel, which spans the central region of the Northwest Passage shipping route. Results indicate that the CAA primarily exports ice to the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay, with an average annual (October to September) ice area flux of 137 ± 72 × 10 3 km 2 and a volume flux of 58 ± 68 km 3. The CAA contributes a larger area but smaller volume of ice downstream to the North Atlantic than what is delivered via Nares Strait. The average annual ice area flux from the Queen Elizabeth Islands to Parry Channel was 27 ± 10 × 10 3 km 2 and the volume flux was 34 ± 12 km 3 , with a majority occurring through Byam Martin Channel, which is directly above the central region of Northwest Passage. Over our study period, annual multi-year ice (MYI) replenishment within the CAA was resilient, with an average of 14 ± 38 × 10 3 km 2 imported from the Arctic Ocean and an average of 56 ± 36 × 10 3 km 2 of first-year ice (FYI) retained following the melt season. The considerable ice flux to Parry Channel, together with sustained MYI replenishment, emphasizes the continued risk that sea ice poses to practical utilization of key shipping routes in the CAA, including the Northwest Passage. This study aims to reveal the statistical difference by measuring the vertebral heart scale and anatomical structures of the heart in different dog breeds. The vertebral heart scale (VHS) has recently been described as a method for measuring the heart silhouettes of dogs and cats. Vertebral heart scale (VHS) may vary in dog and cat breeds due to age, weight, etc. Twenty-one dogs (10 males and 11 females) of different ages and weights were used. Among the dog breeds used are the French Bulldog, Russian Poodle, Rottweiler, Jack Russell, Golden Retriever, King Charles, Pekingese, Belgian Shepherd, Husky, Chihuahua, Cocker, Terrier, Bulldog, Bouvier and Flanders breeds. Multislice detectors were scanned at 80 kV, 200 MA, 639 mGY, and 0.625 mm slice thickness. The resulting images were saved in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format. The obtained sections were measured in 3D-Slicer software. Thoracic height (TH) and cranial vena cava (CVC) measurement parameters were statistically significant with weight (P<0.05). Vertebral heart scale (VHS) was not statistically significant with any parameter in the correlation analysis (P>0.05). At the correlation table of animal weight with the measurements, it was seen that it had a very significant positive correlation with other measurement parameters except vertebral heart score (VHS) (P<0.01). Vertebral heart scale was determined as 9.09±1.37 vertebrae in females and 9.50±0.52 vertebrae in males. The study aims to contribute to veterinary anatomy, surgery and internal medicine. Monitoring neoplasms in standardized registries facilitates epidemiologic studies of risk factors for tumor development and predisposition. In an observational study, we determined incidence rates (IR) and malignant tumor incidence rate ratios (IRR) by age, sex, and breed in Swiss dogs using demographic data from the official Swiss dog registration database Amicus. The dataset analyzed included 54'986 tumors diagnosed by histology and cytology in four Swiss veterinary pathology laboratories between 2008 and 2020. Diagnoses were coded according to the Vet-ICD-O-canine-1 system. Most tumors occurred in the skin (n = 19'045; 34.64%), soft tissues (n = 11'092; 20.17%), and mammary glands (n = 7'974; 14.50%). The IRs for all and for malignant tumors were 775/100'000 dog-years at risk (95%CI 764–777) and 338/100'000 dog-years at risk (95%CI 333–342), respectively. Females (850; 95%CI 834–853) had a higher overall tumor IR than males (679; 95%CI 666–684). The highest tumor IR was found at 11 years of age (1'857; 95%CI 1'780–1'867). Potential novel breed-specific predispositions were uncovered, with high IRs for several benign and malignant tumors in Polski Owczarek Nizinnys (overall IR: 3'303; 95%CI 2'502–3'864) and high IRs for malignant tumors in Russian Black Terriers (melanomas: 345; 95%CI 138–708), Field Spaniels (adenocarcinomas: 376; CI95% 138–817), Dogo Argentinos (mast cell tumors: 844; CI95% 591–1'169), King Charles Spaniels and Manchester Terriers (lymphomas: 319; CI95% 137–627 and 302; CI95% 98–704, respectively), Landseers (osteosarcomas: 74; CI95% 15–216), Bouvier des Flandres (hemangiosarcomas: 127; CI95% 26–371), and Bearded Collies and Cane Corso Italianos (gliomas: 91; CI95% 45–162 and 34; CI95% 7–99, respectively). Nordic hunting dogs had the highest (8.08; CI95% 3.55–16.7) and Chihuahueno the lowest cancer IRRs (0.42; 95%CI 0.31–0.57) compared to mixed breeds. In conclusion, the calculated IRs and IRRs revealed previously unknown predisposing factors, including novel breed-specific susceptibilities.
