The critical role of energy in contemporary life and the environmental challenges associated with its production imply the need for research and exploration of its novel resources. The present review paper emphasizes the continuous exploitation of non-renewable energy sources, suggesting the transition toward renewable energy sources, termed 'green energy', as a crucial step for sustainable development. The research methodology involves a comprehensive review of articles, statistical data analysis, and examination of databases. The main focus is biomass, a valuable resource for bioenergy and biopesticide production, highlighting not only its traditional diverse sources, such as agricultural waste and industrial residues, but also non-edible invasive alien plant species. This study explores the utilization of invasive alien species in circular economy practices, considering their role in bioenergy and biopesticide production. The potential conflict between bioproduct acquisition and food sector competition is discussed, along with the need for a shift in approaching non-edible biomass sources. The paper emphasizes the untapped potential of under-explored biomass resources and the necessity for policy alignment and public awareness. Species with a significant potential for these sustainable strategies include Acer negundo L., Ailanthus altisima (Mill.) Swingle., Amorpha fruticosa L., Elaengus angustifolia L., Falopia japonica (Houtt.) Ronse Decr., Hibiscus syriacus L., Koelreuteria paniculata Laxm., Paulownia tomentosa Siebold and Zucc., Partenocissus quenquefolia (L.) Planch., Rhus typhina L., Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Thuja orientalis L. In conclusion, the paper highlights the intertwined relationship between energy, environmental sustainability, and circular economy principles, providing insights into Serbia's efforts and potential in adopting nature-based solutions for bioenergy and biopesticides acquisition. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising biowaste valorization technology for sustainable energy, circular economy, local energy community growth, and supporting local authorities' environmental goals. This paper presents a systematic review meta-analysis methodology for biomethane estimation, using over 600 values of volatile solids (VS) content and biochemical methane potential (BMP) of six different waste streams, collected from 240 scientific studies. The waste streams include cow manure (CM), sheep/goat manure (SGM), wheat straw (WS), household waste (HW), organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), and sewage sludge (SS). The statistical analysis showed a mean VS content of 11.9% (CM), 37.3% (SGM), 83.1% (WS), 20.8% (HW), 19.4% (OFMSW), and 10.6% (SS), with BMP values of 204.6, 184.1, 305.1, 361.7, 308.3, and 273.1 L CH4/kg VS, respectively. The case study of Kozani, Greece, demonstrated the methodology's applicability, revealing a potential annual CH4 production of 15,429,102 m3 (corresponding to 551 TJ of energy), with SGM, WS, and CM as key substrates. Kozani, aiming for climate neutrality by 2030, currently employs conventional waste management, like composting, while many local business residual streams remain unused. The present paper explores the biological potential of bioactive compounds present in wine industry wastes, highlighting their valorization to promote sustainability and circular economy. Wine by-products, such as grape pomace and vine shoots, contain a high concentration of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and other phytochemicals with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. Both conventional extraction methods, such as solid–liquid extraction, and emerging technologies, including enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, high-hydrostatic-pressure extraction, and deep natural solvent-assisted extraction (NaDES), are discussed. In addition, the preservation of polyphenolic extracts by microencapsulation, a key technique to improve the stability and bioavailability of bioactive compounds, is addressed. The combination of advanced extraction methods and innovative preservation techniques offers a promising perspective for the valorization of bioactive compounds from wine residues, driving sustainability and innovation in the industry. Biowaste, which often accounts for more than 50% of municipal waste, is an environmental problem if disposed of improperly in landfills but has great potential to achieve the recycling targets set out in Directive (EU) 2018/851. Despite the knowledge in theory and practice about the processing of biowaste and the benefits of recycling, there is a lack of methodological approaches in describing the process of aerobic biodegradation in a concise and suitable way for decision makers, environmental engineers, and project designers. This paper presents how basic data on the properties of biowaste can be used, using theoretical models, to determine basic indicators of the dynamics and material balance of the process. The maximum rate of CO2 generation on the 4th day was Rm = 45.3 g/d, with the potential of available, readily biodegradable components of the biowaste sample of P = 526 g CO2/kg VS. A substrate conversion of 51.7% was achieved in the bioreactor by the 17th day of treatment. The results of this analysis, together with future analyses of sensitivity and boundary conditions of the process, are useful for rapidly sizing a biological treatment system for municipal solid waste in a given area. As the global demand for renewable energy continues to rise, biogas production has emerged as a promising solution for sustainable energy generation. This review article presents the advantages of biogas technologies (mainly agricultural, based on waste of animal and plant origin) and extensively discusses the main principles of biogas production in the anaerobic digestion (AD). In this respect, the main parameters of the process, which require monitoring and decisive for its efficiency are described, therefore: temperature, pH value, retention time and organic loading rate (OLR). The principles of substrate selection are also discussed and the necessity and advantages of the use of organic waste according to the model of a circular economy and the concept of sustainable development, are indicated. It is emphasized that according to the new European regulations, the crops classified as food cannot be considered energy crops. The part on biogas production is summarised with an explanation of the necessity to treat and purify biogas. Biogas purification is important from the point of view of the efficiency of its conversion into electricity. A special place in this paper is devoted to the design, construction, functioning and operation of biogas plants, based on both scientific and practical aspects. In conclusion of this chapter, the economic aspects and profitability of operating biogas plants are discussed. Cost and benefit analyses are the major tool used for the systematic evaluation of the financial costs and potential benefits associated with the operation of biogas plants. The important fact is that the return on investment can be achieved within a few years, provided the activities are well-planned and executed. In addition to the fundamental issues of the operation of biogas plants, this article presents the global situation regarding the development of biogas plants, discussing in detail the specific needs and limitations on different continents. It is a interesting and extensive part of this article. The global agricultural biogas market is at very different levels of development. Most such installations are located in Asia and Europe. China has the highest number of biogas plants, with more than 100,000 biogas plants, followed by Germany with over 10,000 plants. In addition to the 100,000 biogas plants, China also has a large number of household biogas units, which gives a total of approx. 40 million operating units. The article concludes with a discussion of opportunities and barriers to the development of biogas plants, pointing to: financial issues, access to feedstock, political regulations, public awareness and the geopolitical situation. The management of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), also called urban biowaste, and urban wastewater sludge (UWWS) represents a challenge for cities and regions, which want to adopt innovative urban bioeconomy approaches for their treatment and production of high-added-value products beyond the traditional anaerobic digestion (AD) and compost. This adoption is often restricted by the availability and maturity of technologies. The research object of this manuscript, based on the findings of EU Horizon 2020 project HOOP, is the identification of state-of-the-art circular technologies for material valorisation of OFMSW and UWWS, following a novel screening methodology based on the scale of implementation (tested at least at pilot scale). The screening resulted in 25 technologies, which have been compared and discussed under a multidisciplinary assessment approach, showing their enabling factors and challenges, their current or potential commercial status and their compatibility with the traditional technologies for urban biowaste treatment (composting and AD). The bioproducts cover market sectors such as agriculture, chemistry, nutrition, bioplastics, materials or cosmetics. Therefore, the results of this review help project promoters at city/region level to select innovative technologies for the conversion of OFMWS and UWWS into high value products. Exploring high-performance carbon anodes that are low-cost and easily accessible is the key to the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. Producing carbon materials from bio by-products is an intriguing strategy for sodium-ion battery anode manufacture and for high-value utilization of biomass. Herein, a novel hard carbon (PPHC) was prepared via a facile pyrolysis process followed by acid treatment using biowaste pomegranate peel as the precursor. The morphology and structure of the PPHC were influenced by the carbonization temperature, as evidenced by physicochemical characterization. The PPHC pyrolyzed at 1100 °C showed expanded interlayer spacing and appropriate oxygen group content. When used as a sodium ion battery anode, the PPHC-1100 demonstrated a reversible capacity of up to 330 mAh g−1, maintaining 174 mAh g−1 at an increased current rate of 1 C. After 200 cycles at 0.5 C, the capacity delivered by PPHC-1100 was 175 mAh g−1. The electrochemical behavior of PPHC electrodes was investigated, revealing that the PPHC-1100 possessed increased capacitive-controlled energy storage and improved ion transport properties, which explained its excellent electrochemical performance. This work underscores the feasibility of high-performance sodium-ion battery anodes derived from biowaste and provides insights into the sodium storage process in biomass-derived hard carbon. Artichokes (Cynara scolymus L.) are valuable foods, thanks to their health benefits, but they generate significant waste during their production, harvesting, and processing, which poses sustainability issues. This study applied an agroprospecting approach to convert Tema artichoke biowaste (TB) into valuable resources, starting from a global perspective of the production chain to the targeted applications based on chemical and biological analysis. The major TB was identified in the outer bracts of the immature flower heads, which were collected throughout the harvesting season, extracted, and analyzed. The most abundant compounds were phenolic acids including chlorogenic acid and caffeoylquinic derivatives. Among flavonoids, cynaroside was the most abundant compound. Multivariate analysis distinguished batches by collection period, explaining 77.7% of the variance, with most compounds increasing in concentration later in the harvest season. Subsequently, TB extracts were analyzed for their potential in wound healing and anti-aging properties. Fibroblasts were used to assess the effect of selected extracts on cell migration through a scratch wound assay and on cellular senescence induced by etoposide. The results show a significant decrease in senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity, γH2AX nuclear accumulation, and both p53 and p21 protein levels. Overall, this study ascribes relevant anti-skin aging effects to TB, thus increasing its industrial value in cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) serves as a sustainable method to transform pine needle waste into nitrogen-doped (N-doped) hydrochars. The primary focus is on evaluating these hydrochars as catalytic electrodes for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), which are pivotal processes with significant environmental implications. Hydrochars were synthesized by varying the parameters such as nitrogen loading, temperature, and residence time. These materials were then thoroughly characterized using diverse analytical techniques, including elemental analysis, density measurements, BET surface area analysis, and spectroscopies like Raman, FTIR, and XPS, along with optical and scanning electron microscopies. The subsequent electrochemical assessment involved preparing electrocatalytic inks by combining hydrochars with an anion exchange ionomer (AEI) to leverage their synergistic effects. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports on catalytic electrodes that simultaneously incorporate both a hydrochar and AEI. Evaluation metrics such as current densities, onset and half-wave potentials, and Koutecky–Levich and Tafel plots provided insights into their electrocatalytic performances. Notably, hydrochars synthesized at 230 °C exhibited an onset potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, marking the highest reported value for a hydrochar. They also facilitated the exchange of four electrons at 0.26 V vs. RHE in the ORR. Additionally, the CO2RR yielded valuable C2 products like acetaldehyde and acetate. These findings highlight the remarkable electrocatalytic activity of the optimized hydrochars, which could be attributed, at least in part, to their optimal porosity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Harmful cyanobacteria blooms and the escalating impact of cyanotoxins necessitates the effective removal of cyanobacteria from water ecosystems before they release cyanotoxins. In this study, cyanobacteria removal from water samples taken from the eutrophic Aleksandrovac Lake (southern Serbia) was investigated. For that purpose, novel activated carbons derived from waste biomass—date palm leaf stalk (P_AC), black alder cone-like flowers (A_AC), and commercial activated carbon from coconut shell (C_AC) as a reference were used. To define the best adsorption conditions and explain the adsorption mechanism, the influence of contact time, reaction volume, and adsorbent mass, as well as FTIR analysis of the adsorbents before and after cyanobacteria removal, were studied. The removal efficiency of P_AC and A_AC achieved for the applied concentration of 10 mg/mL after 15 min was ~99%, while for C_AC after 24 h was only ~92% for the same concentration. To check the safety of the applied materials for human health and the environment, the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), the health impact (HI) after water purification, and the toxicity (MTT and Comet assay) of the materials were evaluated. Although the P_AC and A_AC achieved much better removal properties in comparison with the C_AC, considering the demonstrated genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of the P_AC and the higher HI value for the C_AC, only the A_AC was further investigated. Results of the kinetics, FTIR analysis, and examination of the A_AC mass influence on removal efficiency indicated dominance of the physisorption mechanism. The growing production of biowaste is causing serious environmental concerns, and composting has emerged as an environmentally friendly solution. This approach contributes to the real circular economy of biowaste, avoiding landfill disposal. This process is flexible as it can be carried out on a domestic or industrial scale. This work focused on the formulation and monitoring of two different composting processes (on a laboratory and domestic scale), to recover biowaste from a university canteen and a rural household, as well as evaluating the quality of the final composts. Three different mixtures of canteen food waste (CFW) and olive wood chips (OWC) were tested at lab scale (CFW:OWC 100:0, 40:60, and 60:40%), with two replicates carried out on the second mixture; a single mixture was tested at the domestic experiment (40:60%). The results showed that both processes reached thermophilic temperatures, with a peak of 65 °C on the lab scale and 75 °C recorded in the domestic composting. Reaching thermophilic temperatures is essential in composting, to maximize the rate of organic matter (OM) decomposition and improve compost quality (e.g., stability and maturation). The moisture content (MC) of biowaste proved to be a critical parameter since the high MC of CFW led to the inhibition of the aerobic process in the mixture without OWC (100% of CFW). On the contrary, a large quantity of OWC (60:40%) showed lower biodegradability due to the presence of lignocellulosic compounds. Analysis of the quality of the final compost revealed that although domestic composting was a process with a low level of control, it allowed obtaining quality compost for agronomic applications, similar to that produced on a laboratory scale. All final composts (after 120 days) were stable and mature, according to the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and the germination index (GI). Indeed, OUR complied with the regulatory limits (15 and 25 mmolO2/kgOM.h) to be considered soil correctives or organic fertilizers, evidencing the stability of the materials. All composts are non-phytotoxic (GI above 80%), meaning that they are suitable for plant growth. The composts produced retained a significant amount of carbon (40–70%), with a high value for returning carbon to the soil in stable OM forms. Thus, when applied to the soil, a significant amount of carbon is carried to this compartment, making a valuable contribution to closing the carbon cycle and avoiding the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. Overall, it was possible to conclude that biowaste from university canteens and households can be recovered by composting, as long as it is mixed with a bulking agent (such as OWC), which promotes the process and improves the properties of the composts. The Adrar region (Algeria) has a total of 397,800 date palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera L.). Due to annual palm cleaning, large quantities of lignocellulosic biomass are produced. Depending on the variety, an average of 65 kg of biowaste is obtained per palm tree. Since the value of this biowaste is underrated, most of the palms are burned outdoors, causing air and visual pollution. This work explores the gasification potential of lignocellulosic waste from date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L. Takarbouche variety) into useful energy. The technology investigated is air updraft fixed-bed gasification, thanks to an originally designed and built reactor, with the capability to process 1 kg of feedstock. Four types of palm waste—namely, palms, petioles, bunch, and bunch peduncles—are first characterized (bulk density, proximate analysis, fixed carbon, elemental composition, and calorific value) and then used as feedstock for two gasification tests each. The syngas produced for the four date palm wastes is combustible, with an outlet temperature between 200 and 400 °C. The operating temperature inside the gasifier varies according to the feature of the biomass cuts (from 174 °C for the peduncles to 557 °C for palms). The experimental setup is also equipped with a cyclone, allowing for the recovery of some of the tar produced during the tests. Finally, the results show that the residence time has a positive effect on the conversion rate of date palm waste, which can significantly increase it to values of around 95%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately one-third of municipal solid waste is biodegradable waste, necessitating its urgent processing into compost or biogas. Indoor composting of biowaste has recently received increased attention due to its economic, environmental, and social benefits, offering a significant contribution to sustainable waste management and circular economy. Instead of disposing of biowaste in landfills, compost is produced as a useful organic soil improver, fertiliser or bio-based product. This study analyses the physicochemical parameters of biowaste and the obtained pre-compost during the Bokashi treatment, considering the effects of different inoculants, occasional mixing of biowaste, and exposure to air. The pretreatment of biowaste was compared based on pH, electrical conductivity, temperature and height of the compost mass, moisture, dry matter, volatile matter, carbon and nitrogen content, and C/N ratio. Collected leakages were analysed for volume, pH, electrical conductivity, and turbidity. In addition, the obtained pre-composts underwent further maturation in two soil types, and the same physicochemical parameters were monitored. Finally, FTIR spectroscopy was employed to analyse the initial biowaste, final pre-compost masses, and the collected leakages. There is no significant difference between the pre-composts and also between the leakages. The results indicate that Bokashi treatment of biowaste with Inoculant 1 efficiently yielded a higher carbon and nitrogen content in the final pre-compost, and produced a lower volume of compost leakage. This paper highlights the Bokashi method’s efficiency in facilitating indoor biowaste treatment.

Biowaste conversion into activated carbon is a sustainable and inexpensive approach that relieves the pressure on its disposal. Here, we prepared micro-mesoporous activated carbons (ACs) from cucumber peels through carbonization at 600 °C followed by thermal activation at different temperatures. The ACs were tested as supercapacitors for the first time. The carbon activated at 800 °C (ACP-800) showed a high specific capacitance value of 300 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s in the cyclic voltammetry and 331 F/g at the current density of 0.1 A/g in the galvanostatic charge–discharge analysis. At the current density of 1 A/g, the specific discharge capacitance was 286 F/g and retained 100% capacity after 2000 cycles. Their properties were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, porosity, thermal analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The specific surface area of this sample was calculated to be 2333 m2 g−1 using the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. The excellent performance of ACP-800 is mainly attributed to its hierarchical porosity, as the mesopores provide connectivity between the micropores and improve the capacitive performance. This paper investigates the influence of the air flow rate in a three-phase air-lift reactor on the sorption of toxic dye, Brilliant green, onto a promising and efficient sorbent, sour cherry stone biochar. In order to gain a comprehensive insight into the sorbent/sorption behaviour, sour cherry stone biochar was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection, pH of the suspension, point of zero charge, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The experiments were performed in an air-lift reactor using airflows of 2.50 and 5.55 dm3 h-1. The experimental data of sorption kinetics experiments were fitted by non-linear form of pseudo-first and, pseudo-second models as well as the Weber-Morris model based on intraparticle diffusion. The overall sorption rate was found to be limited by the Brilliant Green mass transport rate to the sorbent at a lower airflow and thus mixing intensity, while it was kinetically controlled at a higher rate following the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Furthermore, sorption at lower air flow was delayed by mass transfer resistance through the liquid boundary layer surrounding sorbent particles. Presented results clearly indicate that airflow intensity plays a significant role in the overall sorption kinetics and support possible application of the applied biochar for efficient Brilliant Green sorption.

This paper explores the feasibility of functionalizing mango stones with iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MS-Fe 3 O 4) by coprecipitation in batch adsorption processes. The synthesized material was characterized and applied in chloroquine (CQN) and sertraline hydrochloride (SER) removal from contaminated waters. The biosorbent was subjected to a regenerative study and treatment using a synthetic mixture of contaminants to evaluate its applicability in real effluents. The biosorbent was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy images, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and zeta potential to characterize its chemical and morphology properties. The techniques applied showed the effectiveness of the proposed modification. In the adsorption experiments, the optimal adsorbent dosage was 0.01 g for both contaminants. The pH strongly influenced the adsorption of the drugs on MS-Fe 3 O 4 , and the best results were obtained in the pH range of 5–6. Kinetic data showed a better fit to the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium time was achieved in 16 h for CQN and 4 h for SER. Isotherm studies revealed maximum adsorptive capacities of 49.42 and 64.79 mg g−1, respectively, for CQN and SER, at 318 K, demonstrating that the increase in temperature is a favorable factor, and the Sips model better describes the process. The thermodynamic parameters indicate an endothermic (ΔH° >0), spontaneous (ΔG° <0), and reversible (ΔS° >0) nature of the adsorption. This process is essentially governed by physical forces, such as hydrogen and π-π bonds. However, it is also valid to consider the presence of electrostatic forces due to the ionizing nature of CQN and SER. The MS-Fe 3 O 4 biosorbent showed good performance when evaluated in a synthetic mixture of four contaminants, with an overall removal efficiency of approximately 86% and the regenerative capacity of three reusing cycles. This work describes the evaluation of the solid-state fermentation (SSF) bioprocess utilizing brewery spent grain (BSG) and apple pomace (AP) as carbon sources and matrices for microorganism growth to produce xylanase, pectinase, and cellulase. The process was assessed at a larger scale by designing a packed column-type bioreactor equipped with sensors for monitoring critical parameters such as CO2 concentration, humidity, and temperature. Then, process simulation was used to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of the bioprocess at an industrial scale. The analysis centered on evaluating which formulation, primarily containing xylanase (scenario 1), pectinase (scenario 2), or cellulase (scenario 3), yielded the most promising results for advancing to the commercial stage. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the influence of variations in raw material costs and enzyme prices. The obtained results at a higher scale were within the expected results obtained under optimum conditions. Scenario 1 exhibited strong economic viability with further optimization potential (base case: 5000 kg/batch with an ROI of 37.59%, payback time of 2.66 years, IRR of 26.8%, and net present value of USD 7,325,537). The sensitivity analysis revealed that changes in enzyme prices, particularly xylanase, could significantly influence the process's profitability. This study also demonstrated the potential for cost optimization by selecting a more cost-effective inoculum media and optimizing water usage to enhance process efficiency and sustainability. Efficient and cost-effective biosorbents derived from biowaste are highly demanding to handle various environmental challenges, and demonstrate the remarkable synergy between sustainability and innovation. In this study, the extraction of uranium U(VI) was investigated on biowaste activated carbon (BAC) obtained by chemical activation (phosphoric acid) using Albizia Lebbeck pods as biowaste. The biowaste powder (BP), biowaste charcoal (BC) and BAC were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) with nitrogen adsorption for thermal properties, chemical structures, porosity and surface area, respectively. The pHPZC for acidic or basic nature of the surface and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed for BAC. The morphological and elemental analysis were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The extraction of uranium U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions using BAC as sorbent was investigated by using different variables such as pH, contact time, initial uranium U(VI) concentration and BAC dose. The highest adsorption (90.60% was achieved at 0.5 g BAC dose, 2 h contact time, pH 6, 10 ppm initial U(VI) concentration and with 200 rpm shaking speeds. The production of this efficient adsorbent from biowaste could be a potential step forward in adsorption of uranium to meet the high demand of uranium for nuclear energy applications. The present paper explores the biological potential of bioactive compounds present in wine industry wastes, highlighting their valorization to promote sustainability and circular economy. Wine by-products, such as grape pomace and vine shoots, contain a high concentration of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and other phytochemicals with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. Both conventional extraction methods, such as solid–liquid extraction, and emerging technologies, including enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, high-hydrostatic-pressure extraction, and deep natural solvent-assisted extraction (NaDES), are discussed. In addition, the preservation of polyphenolic extracts by microencapsulation, a key technique to improve the stability and bioavailability of bioactive compounds, is addressed. The combination of advanced extraction methods and innovative preservation techniques offers a promising perspective for the valorization of bioactive compounds from wine residues, driving sustainability and innovation in the industry.

Biological and mechanical biological treatment plants combine mechanical and biological treatments to recover the greatest possible amount of materials from municipal solid waste (MSW) and biostabilize the organic fraction to be landfilled or applied in land. These plants handle a high percentage of the MSW generated in Europe. This work presents an exhaustive analysis of the existing plants in Spain which evaluates their typology as well as their performance. In Spain, 137 plants, which receive 13 Mt/year of waste, provide the country with total coverage. Twenty-two types of plants have been identified and grouped into six categories. There are four categories that receive mixed MSW: 1) sorting plants; 2) recovery and composting plants; 3) biodrying and recovery plants; and 4) recovery, biomethanation and composting plants and two that receive separately collected biowaste: 5) composting plants, and 6) biomethanation and composting plants. In plants that receive mixed waste, around 5% of the total input is recovered as recyclable materials (662,182 t/year), of which 29% corresponds to plastics, 27% to metals, and 27% to paper and cardboard. In addition, biostabilized material and/or biogas, and rejects (45–77% of the input) are obtained. In the biowaste plants, high-quality compost (more than 105,000 t/year), a higher biogas yield (43.60 Nm3/t·year) and a lower proportion of rejects (around 29%) are obtained.

As the global demand for renewable energy continues to rise, biogas production has emerged as a promising solution for sustainable energy generation. This review article presents the advantages of biogas technologies (mainly agricultural, based on waste of animal and plant origin) and extensively discusses the main principles of biogas production in the anaerobic digestion (AD). In this respect, the main parameters of the process, which require monitoring and decisive for its efficiency are described, therefore: temperature, pH value, retention time and organic loading rate (OLR). The principles of substrate selection are also discussed and the necessity and advantages of the use of organic waste according to the model of a circular economy and the concept of sustainable development, are indicated. It is emphasized that according to the new European regulations, the crops classified as food cannot be considered energy crops. The part on biogas production is summarised with an explanation of the necessity to treat and purify biogas. Biogas purification is important from the point of view of the efficiency of its conversion into electricity. A special place in this paper is devoted to the design, construction, functioning and operation of biogas plants, based on both scientific and practical aspects. In conclusion of this chapter, the economic aspects and profitability of operating biogas plants are discussed. Cost and benefit analyses are the major tool used for the systematic evaluation of the financial costs and potential benefits associated with the operation of biogas plants. The important fact is that the return on investment can be achieved within a few years, provided the activities are well-planned and executed. In addition to the fundamental issues of the operation of biogas plants, this article presents the global situation regarding the development of biogas plants, discussing in detail the specific needs and limitations on different continents. It is a interesting and extensive part of this article. The global agricultural biogas market is at very different levels of development. Most such installations are located in Asia and Europe. China has the highest number of biogas plants, with more than 100,000 biogas plants, followed by Germany with over 10,000 plants. In addition to the 100,000 biogas plants, China also has a large number of household biogas units, which gives a total of approx. 40 million operating units. The article concludes with a discussion of opportunities and barriers to the development of biogas plants, pointing to: financial issues, access to feedstock, political regulations, public awareness and the geopolitical situation. The most frequently cited reasons for investment failure include economic problems, lack of professional knowledge.
