This study aimed to uncover the chronology and production technologies of ancient bricks unearthed from various locations in Upper Assam, Northeast India. To achieve this goal, complementary spectroscopic techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), as well as Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL/IRSL) dating, were applied. FTIR and XRD analyses revealed the presence of quartz, feldspar (microcline, orthoclase, albite), kaolinite, chlorite, cerussite, palygorskite, magnetite, hematite, and organic carbon. The mineralogical composition indicates two distinct groups with firing temperatures below 650 °C and above ~800 °C. These two groups could be the first indication of the presence of two civilizations or at least two different production technologies involving different firing temperatures and kiln atmospheric conditions. Further, the SEM-EDS study suggests that both calcareous and non-calcareous clays were used in brick making, which have low and high refractory properties, respectively. The internal morphology of the samples shows the existence of micropores and microfractures, indicating the influence of higher-temperature firing. Absolute dating techniques associate the two brick groups with different age ranges: a firing temperature above ~800 °C indicates a superior technology corresponding to a production period between the 7th and 10th centuries CE. In contrast, a temperature below 650 °C indicates a technologically less advanced group of people, with the age group dated between the 11th and 14th centuries CE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand the ecology of species and promote biotechnology through beneficial strain selection for improving starch yield in maize wet-milling steeping, bacterial diversity and community structure during the counter-current steeping process in a commercial steeping system were characterized and investigated. The microbial diversity in the steeping liquor, which consisted of 16 phyla, 131 families, and 290 genera, was more abundant compared to those present on the surface of unsteeped maize. As the counter-current steeping progressed, exposing newer maize to the older steepwater, Lactobacillus dominated, replacing Rahnella, Pseudomonas, Pantoea, and Serratia. The thermophilic and acidophilic microbial consortia were enriched through adaptive evolution engineering and employed to improve starch yield. Several steeping strategies were evaluated, including water alone, SO2 alone, mono-culture of B. coagulans, microbial consortia, and a combination of consortium and SO2. Combining the microbial consortium with SO2 significantly increased the starch yield to, about 66.4 ± 0.5%, a 22% and 46% increase over SO2 alone and the consortium alone, respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) of steeped maize structure indicated that the combination of consortium and SO2 disrupted the protein matrix and widened gaps between starch granules in maize endosperm. This released proteins into the steepwater and left starch granules in the aleurone layer. The steeping strategy of using thermophilic and acidophilic microbial consortium as additives shows potential application as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional maize steeping procedures. In this work, the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of X90 steel was investigated at various cathodic protection potentials by slow strain rate tensile tests, crack growth tests, electrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscope. The results show that the crack growth behavior of X90 steel in high pH soil environment is controlled by the microenvironment-electrochemical interaction at the crack tip. Under the combined action of anodic dissolution and hydrogen embrittlement, the SCC susceptibility decreases at first and then increases with the negative shift of cathodic protection potential. The pH value and Cl- concentration at the crack tip are affected by the potential outside the crack. Crack growth rate (CGR) is fundamentally affected by the cathodic protection potential, and the minimum CGR is − 850 mV/SCE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, Polylactic acid (PLA)-polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) nanofiber-based smart composite structures were investigated for smart grippers and self-folding applications. In the first stage, the electrospinning process is used for PVDF nanofibers fabrication. In the second stage, fused filament fabrication-based 3D printing was used for manufacturing PLA composites with sandwiched PVDF nanofiber interleaves. In the next stage, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and shape memory (for self-folding abilities) performances were investigated. The optimized process parameters observed for self-folding PLA-PVDF nanofiber-based interleaves composite structures are the combination of 1 no. of PVDF nanofibers layer, 0.15 mm thickness of nanofibers layer, and zigzag infill pattern. The results of the study were supported by a scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. Most importantly, the smart structure manufactured using a zigzag pattern showed better self-folding performance as compared to the structure manufactured using a grid pattern under the thermal stimulus. The investigation of the study suggested that PLA-PVDF nanofiber-based interleaves composite structures are potential candidates for self-folding, smart gripper, and smart actuator applications. Extracting gas from unconventional shale reservoirs with low permeability is challenging. To overcome this, hydraulic fracturing (HF) is employed. Despite enhancing shale gas production, HF has drawbacks like groundwater pollution and induced earthquakes. Such issues highlight the need for ongoing exploration of novel shale gas extraction methods such as in situ heating through combustion or pyrolysis to mitigate operational and environmental concerns. In this study, thermally immature shales of contrasting organic richness from Rajmahal Basin of India were heated to different temperatures (pyrolysis at 350, 500 and 650 °C) to assess the temperature protocols necessary for hydrocarbon liberation and investigate the evolution of pore structural facets with implications for CO2 sequestration in underground thermally treated shale horizons. Our results from low-pressure N2 adsorption reveal reduced adsorption capacity in the shale splits treated at 350 and 500 ºC, which can be attributed to structural reworking of the organic matter within the samples leading to formation of complex pore structures that limits the access of nitrogen at low experimental temperatures. Consequently, for both the studied samples BET SSA decreased by ∼58% and 72% at 350 °C, and ∼67% and 68% at 500 °C, whereas average pore diameter increased by ∼45% and 91% at 350 °C, and ∼100% and 94% at 500 °C compared to their untreated counterparts. CO2 adsorption results, unlike N2, revealed a pronounced rise in micropore properties (surface area and volume) at 500 and 650 ºC (∼30%–35% and ∼41%–63%, respectively for both samples), contradicting the N2 adsorption outcomes. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images complemented the findings, showing pore structures evolving from microcracks to collapsed pores with increasing thermal treatment. Analysis of the SEM images of both samples revealed a notable increase in average pore width (short axis): by ∼4 and 10 times at 350 °C, ∼5 and 12 times at 500 °C, and ∼10 and 28 times at 650 °C compared to the untreated samples. Rock-Eval analysis demonstrated the liberation of almost all pyrolyzable kerogen components in the shales heated to 650 °C. Additionally, the maximum micropore capacity, identified from CO2 gas adsorption analysis, indicated 650 °C as the ideal temperature for in situ conversion and CO2 sequestration. Nevertheless, project viability hinges on assessing other relevant aspects of shale gas development such as geomechanical stability and supercritical CO2 interactions in addition to thermal treatment. Modification of the surfaces of polymeric scaffolds is often required to make the material suitable for specific tissue engineering applications. Physico-chemical properties of scaffolds can be altered using various methods, such as plasma treatment, laser processing, chemical modifications, grafting with nanoparticles, or surface coating. In this paper physico-chemical modification of polycaprolactone (PCL) surface fibers was performed by exposing PCL samples to simultaneous soft X-ray/extreme ultraviolet (SXR/EUV) radiation and low-temperature, SXR/EUV-induced, nitrogen, and oxygen plasmas. The physical and chemical changes on modified PCL surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The effects of physico-chemical scaffold surface changes were verified with biological tests, i.e., MTT assay and immunofluorescence on murine osteoblast cell line (7F2). It was found that exposure of scaffolds to ionizing radiation and low-temperature plasmas induced strong chemical changes on their surface, i.e., appearance of various new chemical groups. Also, smoothing of the surface of PCL fibers, i.e., disappearance or significant reduction of the size of micropores on their fibers was also observed. Increased viability and adhesion of 7F2 osteoblasts on modified PCL samples after 24 h cell culture compared to non-treated PCL was also confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Visual examination of the surface topography, in conjunction with the other sensors, may confirm the existence of chatter. Online chatter detection during real machining operations is possible with the use of sensors, and the presence of noise in their output and restricted bandwidth are the major drawbacks of these sensors. Productivity drops and manufacturing costs go up when there is a lot of chatter in the machining process. In the present paper, an integrated spindle tool system is modeled using finite element method with Timoshenko beam theory including rotational and shear deformation effects. To maximize the average stable depth of cut in an end milling process while simultaneously minimizing the chatter vibration levels, real time and offline strategies have been investigated. Machining experiments performed on Al6061-alloy specimens provide an empirical confirmation of the stability boundaries. The surface topography methods such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope images along with vibration levels are considered, to identify chatter marks under various machining conditions, which helps to assure cutting process stability. Stability lobe diagrams are plotted with these derived conditions and observed at an incremental level in the axial depths of the cut. In this paper, the self-assembling nature of nano-doped liquid crystals is characterized using different techniques. Liquid crystals, namely 4, n-alkoxybenzoic acid (nOBA, where n = 7,8), doped with magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 of size 20nm) are considered for the present study. The structural and morphological properties of nano-doped liquid crystals are determined by the techniques of X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Morphological properties like grains, grain boundaries, and crystal defects are elucidated using the scanning electron microscope technique. Structural properties such as crystal structure, grain size, inter-atomic spacing, lattice constant, and dislocation density are determined using X-ray diffraction studies. The characteristics measured from the X-ray diffraction studies are correlated using the statistical analysis of Scanning electron microscope images. This is an objective analysis of X-ray diffraction studies. In addition to these techniques, colorimetric studies of optical anisotropic liquid crystals are carried out by measuring the chromaticity coordinates and color purity. This study utilizes the polarizing optical microscope technique. Furthermore, the influence of nano dopants on the characteristics of liquid crystals with carbon chain length is also discussed. Morphological measurements of Anatolian chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) leaves were done within the borders of Abana district of Kastamonu province. The study was conducted using mixed (oak, beech, hornbeam, black pine, and yellow pine) medium (41% to 70%) and fully closed (71% to 100%) stands. Some leaf parameters, such as leaf blade width, petiole length, leaf blade length, leaf length, distance between lateral veins, teeth width, teeth length, the angle between the leaf base and the petiole, and the angle between the midrib and lateral veins, were measured. Moreover, stomata of the leaves picked up from precise altitudes were observed under a scanning electron microscope. The differences between fibre elevation, fibre wall thickness, elasticity coefficient, rigidity coefficient, Muhlstep rate, and Runkel ratio were found in the wood samples taken from different altitude zones. It was found that altitude did not affect leaf blade width, fibre length, fibre width, felting ratio, and lumen width. However, it was determined that altitude affected other studied characteristics. This study explored the effect of raw material morphology on the properties of bamboo-plastic composites produced using hot-pressing. To provide a reference for reducing the production cost and improve the product properties of the composites, polylactic acid (PLA)-based bamboo-plastic composites were prepared using bamboo chips with a shaved morphology (BS) and fiber morphology (BF) and PLA as the matrix material, via hot-pressing. The properties of the bamboo-plastic composites formed with BS and BF chips were studied and compared with those of composites with conventional granular morphology (BM) and powder morphology (BP). The results showed that when the content of the bamboo chips was at 50% (the same below), the mechanical properties of the BF/PLA composites were remarkably better than those of the other PLA-based composites. However, the BF/PLA composites showed a high degree of hydrophilicity, with a water contact angle of 70.0° and a water absorption of 10.8% at 288 h. More holes could be seen in the BF/PLA composites using a scanning electron microscope. Among the four types of PLA-based composites, better melt fluidity was found only in the BF/PLA composites, and the melting index was 65.3 g/min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanochemical ball milling process at 650°C for 5 h formed the single‐phase Bi2VO5.5 powder, which was tested as a catalyst for methylene blue (MB) dye degradation. X‐ray diffraction validated phase formation. A scanning electron microscope inspection verified the presence of grains with irregular shapes. Piezocatalytic MB dye degradation with a.4 g BV sample was ∼67% after 90 min in a ball mill and ∼49% after 180 min in an ultrasonicator. Utilizing a.4 g BV sample, the 90‐min investigation of piezocatalysis using a ball mill showed an 18% increase in degrading performance compared to the findings of the 180‐min study of piezocatalysis using ultrasonication. Ball mill employed piezocatalysis evaluation utilizing.4 g Bi2VO5.5 with 15 balls produces an excellent k value of.0109 min−1. Calcium silicate ceramics were successfully prepared at various temperatures by spark plasma sintering technique (SPS) using two different compositions, and their morphological and structural characteristics were thoroughly analyzed and compared by scanning electron microscope, X‐ray diffraction, and apparent density measurements. The effect of the sintering method and temperature on microstructural properties has also been studied. The sintered samples prepared by SPS through a heat input of 800°C showed the highest densification as results 800°C was suggested as optimum sintering temperature. Different phases presented in pseudo‐wollastonite, wollastonite, and triclinic Ca3(SiO4)O have been observed in the case of 50C50C with lowest porosity ∼6%$\sim \;6\% $ and highest density 2.6 g/cm3, whereas the composition 10C90S resulted in a fully amorphous material presented in granular microstructure with density of 1.7 g/cm3. An ample amount of fruit waste is generated as agro-industrial waste, leading to significant nutritional, economic, and environmental challenges. Fruit peels are rich in many valuable bioactive compounds with the potential for developing nanoparticles. This study examined fresh juices of two citrus fruit peel wastes (Citrus sinensis: C. sinesis and Citrus limon: C. limon) for antioxidants and total protein. Then, we investigated their ability to produce silver nanoparticles, which were further analyzed for anti-microbial activity against thirteen pathogenic microbes. Both Citrus peel juices were rich in secondary metabolites. The formation of Ag nanoparticles was initially confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, with peaks at 400 nm for C. sinensis peel Ag nanoparticles and 430 nm for C. limon peel Ag nanoparticles. Further characterization was conducted using zeta sizer, zeta potential, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The antimicrobial activity was tested using the well diffusion method against 11 bacterial strains (five Gram-positive and six Gram-negative) and two fungal strains of Candida. TEM and SEM results revealed a spherical shape, with an average diameter of about 13 nm for C. sinensis and 21 nm for C. limon Ag. EDX confirmed the presence of silver in both nanoparticles. The FTIR spectrum of the extract indicated the presence of biomolecules, which facilitated the reduction and capping of the synthesized Ag nanoparticles. The prepared nanoparticles showed remarkable antimicrobial activity, but the nanoparticles from C. sinensis exhibited stronger antibacterial properties because of their smaller size. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic is the most widely used type of plastic that produces waste and causes various environmental and health problems. The treatment of PET plastic waste with chemically and mechanically recycling approaches still has shortcomings, so biological processing using microorganisms or enzymes has new potential. Two bacterial isolates from the Indonesian Culture Collection of National Research and Innovation Agency (InaCC, BRIN), namely isolate InaCC B538 and InaCC B947, were further observed for their potential in PET plastic degradation. Firstly, both isolates were determined by the molecular marker 16S rDNA. The potential of both isolates was measured with following method: 10 days of degradation using PET and PCL substrates, esterase enzyme activity assay, and observation of the PET plastic surface using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Species identification was performed using DNA sequencing of 16S rDNA. InaCC B538 and InaCC B947 were closely related to Bacillus altitudinis TBMAX41 and Alcaligenes faecalis AN-13, respectively. InaCC B947 isolate has a better potential in degrading PET plastic and PCL with a degradation percentage of 0.32% for PET plastic and 3.22% for PCL film for 10 days, respectively, and esterase activity of 0.06 U/ml; while InaCC B538 did not cause weight loss of PET and 2.49% for PCL, respectively, with esterase activity of 0.04 U/ml. The degradation of PET plastic by the isolates InaCC B947 was able to cause damage to the plastic surface leading to the degradation of PET plastic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, the results of an experimental study on the use of three alternative components for creating artificial aggregates (AAs) (granules) and their usage in 3D-printed concrete (3DPC) are examined. This study combines AAs made from organic components like hemp shives (HSs), pyrolyzed coal (charcoal), waste/municipal solid waste incinerator bottom slag (BS), and a mix of a reference 3DPC with the aforementioned AAs. Particularly, to enhance these properties to make low-carbon 3DPC, in this research, the potential of using AAs as lightweight aggregates was increased to 14% in terms of the mass of the concrete. Each mix was tested in terms of its printability via a preliminary test in a 3D printing laboratory. For an additional comparison with the aforementioned cases, 3DPC was mixed with unprocessed hemp shives, charcoal, and BS. Furthermore, their strength was measured at 28 days, and lastly, their durability parameters and shrinkage were experimentally investigated. Cross-sections of the fragments were studied under a scanning electron microscope. Previous studies on the austenite grain growth were mostly based on a fixed temperature, and the relationship between the austenite grain and austenitizing parameters was fitted according to the results. However, there is a lack of quantitative research on the austenite grain growth during the heating process. In the present work, based on the diffusion principle of the controlled Ti microalloying element, the diffusion process of carbonitrides containing Ti during the heating process was analyzed. Combined with the precipitation model and the austenite growth model, the prediction model of austenite grain growth of Ti microalloyed steel during different heat treatment processes was established. The austenite grain size versus the temperature at four different heating rates of 0.5, 1, 10, 100 °C/s was calculated. The grain growth behavior of austenite during the heating process of Ti microalloyed steel was studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The experimental data of the austenite grain size was in good agreement with the calculation by the proposed model, which provides a new idea for the prediction of austenite grain size in non-equilibrium state during the heating process. In addition, for Ti-containing microalloyed steels, the austenite grain size increased with the increasing heating temperature, while it changed little by further prolonging isothermal time after certain heating time, which was related to the equilibrium degree of the precipitation and the dissolution of Ti element. Geopolymers, as a novel cementitious material, exhibit typical brittle failure characteristics under stress. To mitigate this brittleness, fibers can be incorporated to enhance toughness. This study investigates the effects of varying polypropylene fiber (PPF) content and fiber length on the flowability, mechanical properties, and flexural toughness of coal gangue-based geopolymers. Microstructural changes and porosity variations within the Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Mortar(GMPF) matrix were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Low field NMR(LF-NMR) to elucidate the toughening mechanism of PPF-reinforced geopolymers. The introduction of fibers into the geopolymer matrix demonstrated an initial bridging effect in the viscous geopolymer slurry, with a 3.0 vol% fiber content reducing fluidity by 5.6%. Early mechanical properties of GMPF were enhanced with fiber addition; at 1.5 vol% fiber content and 15 mm length, the 3-day flexural and compressive strengths increased by 30.81% and 17.4%, respectively. Furthermore, polypropylene fibers significantly improved the matrix's flexural toughness, which showed an increasing trend with higher fiber content. At a 3.0 vol% fiber content, the flexural toughness index increased by 198.35%. The data indicated that a fiber length of 12 mm yielded the best toughening effect, with an 84.03% increase in the flexural toughness index. SEM observations revealed a strong interfacial bond between fibers and the matrix, with noticeable damage on the fiber surface due to frictional forces, and fiber pull-out being the predominant failure mode. Porosity testing results indicated that fiber incorporation substantially improved the internal pore structure of the matrix, reducing the median pore diameter of mesopores and converting mesopores to micropores. The paper concerns the influence of heat treatment (annealing, quenching and aging) on the microstructure and hardness of flat bars samples from the CuAl10Ni5Fe4 alloy. The microstructures were observed in light and scanning electron microscopes. The appearance and area fractions of the martensite beta phase and their influence on the mechanical properties were examined. The annealing study at a temperature of 950 °C for 1 hour, followed by rapid quenching in water and subsequent tempering at a temperature of 350-500 °C for 15-120 minutes, demonstrated the potential for a significant increase in the hardness of aluminum bronze from approximately 200 HV3 up to 600 HV3. This study employed reactive extrusion to produce micro-composites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with different fractions of diatomaceous earth, both unmodified and modified, using a novel reversible crosslinking reaction agent (RXR) consisting of a combination of sulfur, organic peroxide, and an accelerator. The rheological behavior and crosslinking response of the system were measured using dynamic rheological analysis using a torque rheometer. The mechanical characteristics of the system were evaluated through tensile and impact tests. The thermal characteristics were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, while the structural and morphological properties were analyzed using wide-angle X-ray scattering, Fourier infrared transform, and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties of the HDPE resin were diminished by the inclusion of the diatomaceous earth due to aggregation and inadequate interfacial connections, whereas the thermal stability remained unaffected. Furthermore, the presence of diatomaceous earth led to enhancements in both crystallinity and lamellar thickness. The addition of the RXR agent improved the tensile and impacts strengths, caused by the crosslinking reaction. However, it had a detrimental effect on the degree of crystallinity and the size of the crystals formed. Analysis of mechanical, rheological, and crystallization properties demonstrated that the incorporation of diatomaceous earth and the diatomaceous earth-RXR agent combination showed potential as additives for HDPE. In this work, novel Mn2+‐doped transparent NaYP2O7 glass–ceramics were prepared through melt‐quenching and subsequent thermal treatment. The surface crystallization method was confirmed based on the differential scanning calorimeter, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope characterization. As the increase and prolong of the heat‐treatment temperature and time, the crystallinity of the NaYP2O7 glass–ceramics increases, while the transmittance gradually decreases. The optimal heat‐treatment regime is identified to be crystallized over 4 h at 580°C based on the crystallinity and transmittance. Under the excitation of 408 nm, both the Mn2+‐doped precursor glass and glass–ceramic crystallized at 580°C for 4 h generate a broad emission at 620 nm (4T2(g)→6A1(s)) with a full width at half‐maximum (FWHM) of ∼107 nm. The glass–ceramics exhibit higher emission intensity and longer decay lifetime than that of precursor glass with the aid of the low phonon energy NaYP2O7 crystals. The Mn2+‐doped glass–ceramic exhibits stable orange‐red luminescence with the chromaticity coordinates of (0.568, 0.428), low correlation color temperature of 1 800 K, high color purity of 98.88%, and low thermal quenching (70% at 373 K of the initial intensity at 298 K). The reservoir quality of tight sandstone is usually affected by pore throat structures, and understanding pore throat structures and their fractal characteristics is crucial for the exploration and development of tight sandstone gas. In this study, fractal dimensions of pore throat structures and the effect of diagenesis on the fractal dimension of tight sandstone sweet spot in Huagang Formation, Jiaxing area, East China Sea Basin were studied by means of thin sections, scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope quantitative mineral evaluation, and high pressure mercury injection experiments. The results show that the total fractal dimension ranges of type I, type II, and type III sweet spots were 2.62–2.87, 2.22–2.56, and 2.71–2.77, respectively. The negative correlation between total fractal dimensions, porosity, and permeability of type I sweet spots was different from those of type II and type III sweet spots. The negative correlation between total fractal dimensions of type II and type III sweet spots and maximum mercury saturation, average pore throat radius, and skewness were significant, whereas the correlation between total fractal dimensions of type I sweet spots, and maximum mercury saturation, average pore throat radius and skewness were not significant. The positive correlation between the total fractal dimensions of type II and type III sweet spots and the relative sorting coefficient, displacement pressure, and efficiency of mercury withdrawal were significant, whereas the correlation between the total fractal dimension of type I sweet spots and relative sorting coefficients, displacement pressures and efficiency of mercury withdrawal were not significant. The effect of diagenesis on fractal dimensions was investigated. Compaction reduced the pore space of tight sandstone and increased fractal dimensions. Quartz cementation and calcite cementation blocked pores and throats, reduced pore space, and increased fractal dimensions. Chlorite coat can inhibit compaction, protect pore throat structures, and maintain fractal dimensions. Most clay minerals filled primary pores and secondary pores and increased fractal dimensions. Dissolution increased the pore space of tight sandstone and decreased the fractal dimensions of the pore throat structures. The pore throat structures of type I sweet spots were mainly composed of macropores, mesopores, transitional pores, and micropores, and the fractal dimension of type I sweet spots was chiefly controlled by chlorite coat formation, dissolution, and a small amount of compaction. This paper investigates the tensile behaviors and self-healing of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) under sulfate wet–dry cycles to reflect the durability. Four pretensile strain levels of 0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% were designed. The uniaxial tensile test, three-point bending test, and single-crack tensile test were performed, along with the microscopic characterizations of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that the sulfate wet–dry cycle exposure had a positive effect on the tensile strength and initial cracking strength of the uncracked ECC, while that was negative on the tensile strain capacity. The insufficient margin of the σoc/σcr and Jb′/Jtip indices explained the lower tensile strain. The tensile strength and initial cracking strength of the cracked ECC with 1% pretensile strain surpassed those of the uncracked ECC after undergoing 80 sulfate wet–dry cycles (80 C), while that did not hold for the other cracked ECCs. All the cracked ECCs showed a similar tensile strain after undergoing 80 C. The crack with a width of less than 100 μm achieved complete self-healing. The self-healing products of ECC under sulfate wet–dry cycle exposure may comprise of calcium (alumino) silicate hydrate [C-(A)-S-H] gel, calcite, ettringite, and gypsum. This study uses fly-ash-based superplasticized geopolymer by adding a naphthalene-centered superplasticizer to the geopolymerized soil. Alkali-binder ratios and alkali-activator ratios are varied simultaneously with a molarity of 10M. The optimum dosages of binder, geopolymer, and superplasticized geopolymer are found from unconfined compression tests. California Bearing Ratio (CBR), pH, consolidation, water-holding capacity, and microstructure tests were performed on optimum dosages. The clayey soil's undrained shear strength and CBR value increased as the geopolymer was superplasticized. The 28-day undrained shear strength of geopolymerized clay was around 300 kPa, attained within three days of the curing period with superplasticized geopolymer. This is because adding a superplasticizer increases the polymerization reaction rate and improves the geopolymer's performance. The maximum undrained shear strength was attained within seven days of the curing period for both cases. The undrained shear strength after a curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days for geopolymer and superplasticized geopolymer was found to be almost the same value, which shows that after seven days, curing has little role in strength improvement. The hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation of geopolymerized soil increased with the addition of superplasticizer due to the reduction in fine particles and plasticity of the residual soil. Microstructural studies using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques showed an interaction between soil, geopolymer, and superplasticizer, thus confirming the formation of geopolymer gel and increased polymerization rate with the superplasticizer. An attempt has been made to fabricate electroless duplex (Ni-P-ZnO/Ni-P-SiC) coatings on the mild steel materials. Present investigation focused on ZnO and SiC nanoparticles concentration on the corrosion resistance and microhardness of duplex coating. Coated substrates are characterised by using the X-ray diffraction analyses to know the structure of deposit. Surface morphology and element composition was evaluated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM) attached with the energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX). Coating was heat treated for 1 hour at 400°C temperature. Microhardness of the coatings was examined by using Vickers microhardness tester. Corrosion parameters of the duplex coating were evaluated by performing the potentiodynamic polarisation studies in 3.5% NaCl solution. Experimental observations confirm that Ni-P-SiC outer layered coating offers maximum microhardness and duplex coating with Ni-P-ZnO as external layer provides maximum corrosion protection. Maximum load bearing ability of SiC nanoparticles offers superior microhardness to the Ni-P-SiC external layer coatings. Higher electrochemical resistive ZnO nanoparticles provide good corrosion protection to the Ni-P-ZnO external layer coatings. Background: Heterakis gallinarum (H. gallinarum) is a common poultry parasite that can be found in the ceca of many gallinaceous bird species, causing minor pathology and reduced weight gain. Most infections go unnoticed in commercial flocks due to the dependence on fecal egg counts, which are prone to false-negative diagnoses. Furthermore, there is a lack of research on gastrointestinal nematodes that use molecular identification methods, which could be essential for rapid diagnosis and developing efficient control approaches. As a result, the study aimed to look at the cause of mortality in layer chickens induced by H. gallinarum in Egyptian poultry farms using morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular characterization. Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and cell-mediated immune responses from damaged cecal tissues were also examined. Results: Seventy bird samples from ten-layer flocks of different breeds (Native, white, and brown layers) suffering from diarrhea, decreased egg output, and emaciation were collected. Cecal samples were collected from affected and non-affected birds and were examined for parasitic diseases using light and a scanning electron microscope. The mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (COX1) gene was used to characterize H. gallinarum. Our results showed that the collected nematodal worms were identified as H. gallinarum (male and female), further confirmed by COX1 gene amplification and sequence alignment. Gene expression analysis of the inflammatory markers in infected tissues showed a significant up-regulation of IL-2, IFN-γ, TLR-4, and IL-1β and a significant down-regulation of the anti-inflammatory IL-10. The mRNA level of the apoptotic cas-3 revealed apoptotic activity among the H. gallinarum samples compared to the control group. Conclusions: Our results implemented the use of molecular methods for the diagnosis of Heterakis, and this is the first report showing the tissue immune response following infection in layers: upregulation of IL-1β, IFN-γ, Il-2, and TLR-4, while down-regulation of anti-inflammatory IL-10 in cecal tissue, Cas-3 apoptotic activity and Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)activity with immunophenotyping of T-cells in Heterakis infected tissue. Teleost fish possess calcium carbonate otoliths located in separate chambers (utriculus, sacculus, and lagena) of their membranous labyrinth. This study analyzed the surface topography of the sagittal otolith of the Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and the daily and annual increments in these otoliths. The otolith surface, characterized by laser scanning confocal microscopy for the first time, consisted of a system of prominent ridges and valleys (grooves), but it is unclear whether these structures are functional or represent time-resolving markings reflecting growth periodicity. Within the first-year volume, daily increments, each consisting of an incremental (more mineralized) and a discontinuous (less mineralized) zone, were resolved by optical microscopy and backscattered electron (BSE) imaging in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Daily growth increments could, however, not be resolved in volumes formed after the first year, presumably because otolith growth markedly slows down and spacing of incremental markings narrows in older fish. Throughout otolith growth, the crystalline network continues across the discontinuous zones. Fluorochrome labeling provides additional information on growth after the first year. Compared with optical and BSE imaging, synchrotron microComputed Tomography of intact otoliths (with 0.69 µm volume elements) was less able to resolve daily increments; X-ray phase contrast reconstructions provided more detail than reconstructions with absorption contrast. Sand pear is the main cultivated pear species in China, and brown peel is a unique feature of sand pear. The formation of brown peel is related to the activity of the cork layer, of which lignin is an important component. The formation of brown peel is intimately associated with the biosynthesis and accumulation of lignin; however, the regulatory mechanism of lignin biosynthesis in pear peel remains unclear. In this study, we used a newly bred sand pear cultivar 'Xinyu' as the material to investigate the biosynthesis and accumulation of lignin at nine developmental stages using metabolomic and transcriptomic methods. Our results showed that the 30 days after flowering (DAF) to 50DAF were the key periods of lignin accumulation according to data analysis from the assays of lignin measurement, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, metabolomics, and transcriptomics. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), positively correlated modules with lignin were identified. A total of nine difference lignin components were identified and 148 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 10 structural genes (PAL1, C4H, two 4CL genes, HCT, CSE, two COMT genes, and two CCR genes) and MYB, NAC, ERF, and TCP transcription factor genes were involved in lignin metabolism. An analysis of RT-qPCR confirmed that these DEGs were involved in the biosynthesis and regulation of lignin. These findings further help us understand the mechanisms of lignin biosynthesis and provide a theoretical basis for peel color control and quality improvement in pear breeding and cultivation. Herein, a green synthesis methodology for making copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticle clusters in a cost-effective and simple way is reported. While cuprous sulfate pentahydrate is used as a source of copper, the outer layer of green peas (Pisum Sativum) is used as a source of phenol. Extracting the phenol from pea peels is a simple process that uses water as a solvent. Copper salt is reduced by the phenolic content that is so produced. Both physicochemical and microscopic characterization Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis were performed on the particles. A variety of pea-peeling samples were used during the procedure's several executions to ensure reproducibility. The preparation process was appropriate, as the outcomes were identical. Analyses were also conducted on the produced particles' electrochemical activity as an application. A well-defined and organized redox reaction was seen at E' = +0.25 V against Ag/AgCl which were also shown to be highly electro-active. With the benchmarked redox mediator (5 mM ferricyanide), the particles also produced an outstanding redox peak at E1/2 = -0.01 V vs. Ag/AgCl. In a common reducing organic reaction, such as the reduction of p-nitro phenol to p-amino phenol, they were also found to be effective catalysts. Additionally, tests were conducted on the produced particles for their anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. Oleanolic acid is the main component of wine pomace and has anti-caries properties, antitumor effects, anti-obesity effects, and protects hepatic function. However, the majority of pomace has only been used for compost despite the production of thousands of tons per year of wine pomace in Japan. The present study describes the use of low-toxicity solvents called betaine-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for efficient extraction of oleanolic acid. H2O and 1,3-butanediol were used as control solvents to evaluate the extraction. Quantitative analysis using reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) indicated that extraction of pomace using betaine/xylitol (molar ratio 3:2) afforded the highest yield of oleanolic acid among the deep eutectic solvents. Scanning electron microscope observations and antioxidant assays of extracted samples were also conducted. The results demonstrated effective extraction of pomace under milder conditions than those needed for conventional methods. A pure nickel film and a carbon/nickel (C/Ni) composite film were produced using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The structure of the films was regulated by adjusting the sputtering power and the time allocation of sputtering nickel and graphite targets. Furthermore, a scanning electron microscope, an x-ray diffractometer, and a Raman spectrometer were employed for sample characterization. The results demonstrated that the thickness of the pure nickel film and C/Ni composite film with a total deposition time of 60 s was between 44.96 and 65.31 nm. The nickel film exhibited preferential growth along the crystal plane (111), and the structure of carbon materials was in the second stage of the three-stage model known as "amorphization trajectory of graphite." The prepared films' electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) in the X-band was investigated using a vector network analyzer. It was observed that the C/Ni composite film with a thickness of 44.96 nm demonstrated a superior EMI SE with a maximum value reaching 21 dB. The EMI SE of the C/Ni composite film can reach the same performance and even exceed that of the pure nickel film obtained at the power of 200 W for 60 s in certain frequency segments. In conclusion, the pure nickel film can be replaced by C/Ni composite film prospectively due to their excellent EMI SE along with advantages such as reduced thickness, lighter weight, and lower cost. [Display omitted] Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in the realm of energy and catalytic conversion due to their maximum atomic efficiency. Herein, we report a cascade anchoring strategy for the preparation of a Cu-S 1 O 2 species of single-atom catalyst attached to a carbon carrier containing P and S (Cu-S 1 O 2 SA/CPS) with a content of 12.4 wt%. Over the Cu-S 1 O 2 SA/CPS catalyst, the conversion of 95.8% and selectivity of 87.2% for acetylene hydration could still be achieved at 70 h (T = 200°C, GHSV(C 2 H 2) = 90 h−1 and V H2O /V C2H2 = 4). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests reveal that the Cu atoms of Cu-S 1 O 2 SA/CPS are predominantly coordinated in a trinary manner (Cu-S 1 O 2). Based on high-resolution aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM), it is demonstrated that the Cu single-atom sites are highly dispersed in Cu-S 1 O 2 SA/CPS. It is evident from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that Cu-S 1 O 2 SA/CPS has a two-dimensional layered structure. The specific structure of the active site Cu is primarily attributed to the coordination of S and O atoms, resulting in its superior stability for acetylene hydration towards the synthesis of acetaldehyde. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the formation of the Cu-S 1 O 2 site facilitates the activation of acetylene, which is a pivotal step in the acetylene hydration process and considered as the rate-determining step. This article not only introduces an innovative strategy in the synthesis of Cu SACs but also represents a significant breakthrough in the stability of Cu SACs in acetylene hydration. Egypt's meat producers produce a variety of meat brands that used soybean proteins because of high meat pricing. Allergens have been discovered in products that were not declared allergen-free. A total of 540 samples were obtained at random from various food supermarkets in Sohag City. Using haematoxylin and eosin and various histochemical dyes, light microscopy was utilized to identify the structural properties of the soybeans. The structure of all components was determined using fluorescent microscopy and acridine orange dye. Soybeans were discovered in meat samples and the cotyledon's vascular tissue and parenchymal cells rich in pectin confirmed this discovery by immunohistochemistry techniques. After immunohistochemical confirmation with an antirabbit soybean marker, the proportion of soybean was determined using histological procedures and image analysis. The percentage of soybeans in various meat products, including minced meat from two quality levels, sausages from two quality levels, raw kofta, and beef burgers from two grades, as well as chicken and luncheon meats, was 85%, 90%, 64%, 76%, 80%, 65%, 97%, 82%, and 69%, respectively. Soybean percentages in the examined samples did not fulfill Egyptian standards for soya percentages, which is approximately 10%, and this may affect consumers' health. The infiltration casting method is widely employed for the preparation of ex-situ composite materials. However, the production of composite materials using this method must necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the wettability and interface characteristics between the reinforcing phase and the bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). This work optimized the composition of Zr-based BMGs through microalloying methods, resulting in a new set of Zr-based BMGs with excellent glass-forming ability. Wetting experiments between the Zr-based BMGs melts and W substrates were conducted using the traditional sessile drop method, and the interfaces were characterized utilizing a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The work demonstrates that the microalloying method substantially enhances the wettability of the Zr-based BMGs melt. Additionally, the incorporation of Nb element impedes the formation of W-Zr phases, but the introduction of Nb element does not alter the extent of interdiffusion between the constituent elements of the amorphous matrix and W element, indicating that the influence of Nb element on the diffusion of individual elements is minute. Ni 1-x Ag x O nanoparticles (NPs) with x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08) were fabricated using the composite hydroxide mediated (CHM) method. The effects of Ag doping on the structural, magnetic, and antimicrobial characteristics of NiO NPs have been reported. The stretching mode of the Ni–O molecules was identified at 443 cm−1 in the Fourier transform infrared spectra. The aggregation of nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes is seen under transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The blocking temperature (T B) peak in zero-field cooled (ZFC) magnetization curves display the magnetization from the core of NPs. This peak is absent for the samples with x = 0.00 and 0.02 , which show instead a small net magnetization from the antiferromagnetic core of these NPs. However, a T B peak was found for the samples with x = 0.04 , 0.06 and 0.08 , at 22, 72, and 65 K, respectively, which indicates that the magnetization is induced from the AFM core of NiO NPs for higher Ag doping. With an increasing concentration of Ag in the NiO NPs, the net magnetization did increase and a maximum was found for x = 0.04 at 300 K. For a higher doping concentration of 8 % Ag, a sharp decrease in magnetization was observed. Furthermore, the efficacy and synergistic effect of Ag doping had been analyzed for the effective improvement of the antibacterial properties of NiO NPs. Pure and Ag-doped NiO NPs were exploited to assess their anti-microbial activity against Enterobacter sp., E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and S. pyrogens. The study revealed that anti-bacterial or anti-biofouling properties were introduced as an additional attribute to NiO NPs by incorporation of Ag ions due to its inherent nature as an antimicrobial agent and enhanced its capability to sterilize microbial pathogens. In recent years, the detection and determination of numerous drugs and pharmaceuticals in various media have become crucial aspects of modern healthcare and environmental management. Among the available sensing techniques, electrochemical methods, particularly those utilising screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) and different portable equipment have emerged as rapid, effective, sensitive, and inexpensive. This study focuses on the detection of the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac in neutral media. Cyclic voltammetry measurements were conducted to identify diclofenac and determine the kinetics and electrochemical mechanism of its oxidation, along with assessing the surface characteristics of the employed SPEs. Graphene and modified graphene SPEs were explored as nanosensors for this purpose. The surface of the graphene SPE was modified using polyvinylidene fluoride, applied through a drop modification procedure. The morphology of the examined SPEs was observed by means of scanning electron microscope, while the electrolyte (0.1 g of diclofenac per litre of phosphate-buffered solution, pH = 7.4) was analysed using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology, such as selective laser melting (SLM), has been used to fabricate medical devices of Ti-6wt.% Al-4wt.%V (Ti6Al4V) alloys in dentistry. Strontium (Sr) has been shown to have the potential to treat osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical and biological properties of strontium-containing coatings on selective laser melted Ti6Al4V (SLM-Ti6Al4V) substrate. The disk of Ti6Al4V was prepared by SLM method. The strontium-containing coatings were prepared by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in aqueous electrolytes. The surface topography, chemical composition, and phase of strontium-containing MAO (SrMAO) coatings were performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), and thin film X-ray diffraction (TF-XRD), respectively. The apatite-forming ability of the MAO coatings was conducted in simulating body fluid (SBF), and the cell proliferation was determined by methylthiazoletetrazolium (MTT) assay. The microstructure of SLM-Ti6Al4V displays acicular α-phase organization. The TF-XRD results indicated that the phase of SrMAO coating was anatase, rutile, and titanium. The calcium, phosphorus, and strontium were detected in the coatings by EDS. Using the SEM, the surface morphology of SrMAO coatings exhibited a uniform 3D porous structure. The SrMAO coatings could induce a bone-like apatite layer after immersion in SBF, and presented significantly higher cell proliferation than untreated specimens in in-vitro experiments. All findings in this study indicate that SrMAO coatings formed on SLM-Ti6Al4V surfaces exhibit a benefit on biological responses and thereby are suitable for biomedical applications. Retainer debonding of resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) is one of the major reasons for their lower survival rates than fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) with full-coverage crowns. Recent advances in milling technology have enabled the fabrication of RBFDPs with complex retainers (D-shaped designs). This study aimed to assess the marginal fit and retention force of zirconia RBFDPs with inlay-, L-, and D-shaped designs to clarify their clinical applications. Three abutment teeth models without maxillary second premolars were created using inlay-, L-, and D-shaped retainer designs. The zirconia RBFDPs were designed and fabricated according to the manufacturer's instructions (n = 10). The marginal gap was measured using the silicone replica technique. Zirconia frameworks were bonded to the abutment teeth using resin cement. Tensile test was conducted after thermal cycling and dynamic loading tests. The loads during debonding or fracture were recorded. The failure pattern was analyzed by observing the fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope. D-shaped RBFDPs showed a significantly larger marginal gap than inlay- and L-shaped RBFDPs (P < 0.05). However, the mean marginal values were clinically acceptable (<120 μm). The D-shaped model exhibited the highest tensile strength in the tensile tests. The inlay-shaped and most of the D-shaped RBFDPs experienced debonding with cohesive failure, whereas the L-shaped RBFDPs showed fractures near the connector. The D-shaped retainer design was superior to the inlay- and L-shaped designs with respect to the inhibition of retainer debonding. However, the marginal fitness needs to be improved. Background: Different methods for removing dental carious lesions exist, including conventional rotary caries removal and new advanced technology like polymer-based burs, chemomechanical agents, air abrasion, and laser. Objectives: This study shows the differences in features of dentin (smear layer, patency of dentinal tubules, surface irregularities, intertubular micro porosities, and exposed dentinal tubules) among different types of caries removal techniques. Materials and Methods: An in vitro study was done on 60 primary molars with occlusal class I active caries. Teeth were divided into three groups according to a method of caries removal (G1: chemomechanical, G2: mechanical with a smart bur, and G3: air-abrasion). After complete caries excavation, the teeth were examined under a scanning electronic microscope (SEM) with the power of magnification 4,000x and 8,000x to show the morphological dentinal features with SEM microphotographs. Data obtained was analyzed using the SPSS program where Fisher exact, Kruskal–Wallis and multiple Wilcoxon sum rank tests were used. The level of significance is when the p-value is less than 0.05. Results: Generally, SEM showed the highest ratio of score 1 of smear layer presence, surface irregularities, and microporosity in all groups in both magnifications. The patency of tubules showed the highest ratio of score 1 in G1, scores 2 in both G2 and G3 in magnification 4,000x, while 8,000x there was the highest ratio of its score 1 in G1 and G2 while the G3 has score 2 as the highest score. The exposed dentinal tubules showed the highest ratio in G1 in score 3, in G2 in score 2, and in G3 in score 1 in magnification 4,000x, while 8,000x there was the highest ratio of its score 2 in both G1 and G3 while the G3 has highest score 1. The study with magnification 4,000x showed a significant difference (S) among three groups in exposed dentinal tubules with a p-value (0.012), and there was S between chemomechanical and smart, chemomechanical and air-abrasions groups with a p-value (0.041, 0.001 subsequentially). Other dentin features showed non-significant differences (NS) among or between groups in both magnifications (4,000x, 8,000x). Conclusions: All groups were effective in removing caries and can successfully treat young, scared or stressed patients. Sn-Ag-Cu-Bi (SAC-Bi) alloys are gaining popularity as a potential replacement for current lead-free solder alloys in microelectronic packages. In this study, the tensile and viscoplastic behaviors of eight SAC-Bi alloys with 0, 1 wt.%, 2 wt.%, and 3 wt.% Bi content were investigated. The samples of these eight alloys were cast, aged at room temperature, 75 °C and 125 °C, and tensile-tested at rates of 0.1/s, 0.01/s, and 0.001/s in ambient and elevated temperature environments to facilitate the quantification of viscoplasticity using the Anand viscoplastic model. The Anand parameters of all eight alloys in the as-cast and aged conditions were determined. Tensile strength was found to increase with the addition of Bi. Additionally, alloys containing 2 and 3 wt.% Bi showed a 5 to 10% increase in tensile strength after isothermal aging of 90 days at 125 °C. On the contrary, the tensile strength of alloys with up to 1 wt.% Bi decreased by 22 to 48% after such aging. Using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), the microstructure of the alloys was characterized. The aging-induced property changes in the samples were correlated to strengthening by Bi solute atoms for alloys with 1 wt.% Bi and the formation of Bi precipitation for alloys with 2 wt.% and 3 wt.% Bi. Nanoparticles are one of the effective methodologies implemented in concrete technology. The main objective of this research is to study the influence of nano alumina with different percentage variations ranging from 1% to 3% along with the incorporation of PVA fibers. From the mechanical properties test, the optimum dosage was determined to further study the durability behavior. This research work also investigates the hybridization of two nanoparticles such as nano silica (NS) and nano alumina (NA). The results show that the increasing quantity of NA reduces the compressive strength of the mortar due to agglomeration (cluster of particles), which results in a greater molecular attraction force. From the test results, it is concluded that the optimum dosage has been attained with an addition of 2% NA with 0.3% PVA. The compression strength test results at 14 days and 28 days reveal that the addition of NA tends the mineral admixture to react at early ages in the hydration process, which produces a new chemical compound to fill the pores. The rapid chloride penetration (RCPT) test results at 28 days significantly improved with the incorporation of nanoparticles due to their effective size and chemical reaction towards the other compounds. The test results from the hybridization of nanoparticles showed that the compressive strength was significantly enhanced compared to that of the control mortar and mortar with NA. They are effective up to certain limits beyond that addition, and the workability was reduced. Amongst all mixtures, the maximum compression strength has been attained for the mix with the addition of NA 0.5% and NS 2.5% comparatively. The microstructural properties of mortar were also studied through scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The results showed that the incorporation of nanoparticles in the mortar matrix turns homogeneous with fewer pores and greater amount of hydration compounds; thereby, pore refinement has improved the hydration compounds remarkably. The initial valves of two Cymbella species are observed under a scanning electron microscope, and the perizonium ultrastructure of Cymbella is revealed for the first time. The perizonium is composed of alternate nodes and internodes and lacks transverse perizonium bands. Four new species, Cymbella apiculatophora sp. nov., C. hunanensis sp. nov., C. juglandis sp. nov. and C. menyuanensis sp. nov., are described using light and scanning electron microscopy based on epilithon samples collected from rivers in Hunan and Qinghai Provinces, China. Cymbella menyuanensis is a typical Cymbella species that closely resembles species in the group around C. cymbiformis Agardh, the type species of the genus. Cymbella apiculatophora is similar to C. sinensis Metzeltin & Krammer, while Cymbella hunanensis is closer to the C. hustedtii Krasske group. The last species, C. juglandis, has a cymbelloid valve outline, an obscured intermissio, internal occlusions of the areolae, dorsally deflected distal raphe fissures and a divided apical pore field at each apex, and it does not appear to belong to any group. In addition, new observations on C. cf. excisiformis Krammer and C. hustedtii are reported. The current concept of the genus Cymbella does not represent a monophyletic group as shown by molecular phylogenetic analyses. However, these analyses are still at the preliminary stage and are not yet sufficient to support a complete revision of the genus. Thus, although extremely diverse ultrastructural features are observed in the six Cymbella species investigated in this paper, we prefer to keep them within Cymbella at this moment for the sake of nomenclatural stability. The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of Davidiella sp. and its asexual form, Cladosporium sp., under different environmental conditions in the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Rubber tree leaves were inoculated with a spore suspension and kept in a humid chamber under different temperatures and wetness periods. The behavior of the fungi was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an ultraviolet light microscope (UV). In the images obtained in SEM, four hours after inoculation of the fungus, it was possible to verify the germination and penetration of conidia at temperatures of 10 to 20 °C. The formation of conidiophores was verified from six hours after inoculation, indicating that it is in the reproductive period. In the sexual phase, in SEM, from four hours after inoculation, it was possible to verify the formation of small protuberances at temperatures between 10 and 20 °C. These black dots evolve into circular, protruding black spots, like the symptoms of black crust, with apparent spore formation on them. The data obtained from the UV analyses corroborate those from SEM, showing that the fungus has good development in its two phases between temperatures of 20 and 25 °C and that the period of wetness on the leaf can contribute to the initial development of the pathogen. This study delved into the larval development and the morphological and anatomical transformations that occur in the galls of chestnut trees (Castanea mollissima BL.) and are induced by the chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu (GWDK) across various stages: initial, growth, differentiation, maturity, and lignification. Chestnut galls in the five development stages were collected. Gall structural characteristics were observed with an anatomical stereomicroscope, and anatomical changes in galls were analyzed with staining and scanning electron microscope techniques. The chestnut gall wasp laid its eggs on young leaves and buds. Chestnut gall wasp parasitism caused plant tissues to form a gall chamber, with parenchyma, protective, and epidermal layers. The development of the gall structure caused by the infestation of the GWDK gall led to the weakening of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) elimination ability of the host. The accumulation of ROS led to cell wall peroxidation, resulting in structural damage and diminished host resistance, and the parenchyma layer exhibited significant nutrient supply and thickening. The thickness of the protective and epidermal layers varied notably across different growth stages. The oviposition of the chestnut gall wasp induced modifications in the original plant tissues, with gall formation being most favorable in young tissues, correlating with the maturity level of the host plant tissues. Variances in the internal structures of the galls primarily stemmed from nutrient supplementation, while those in the external structure were attributed to defensive characteristics. This research contributes a foundational understanding of gall development induced by the chestnut gall wasp in Chinese chestnut, offering valuable insights into the intricate interplay between insect infestation and plant physiology. The development of an inexpensive, efficient, and sustainable material suitable for energy storage applications is the need of modern era. Due to their affordability, eco-friendliness, high efficiency, and unique electronic structure metal oxides are the favorable candidate for this purpose. Here, the most desirable MnO2/ZnO nanocomposites were fabricated via hydrothermal route. The successful fabrication of synthetic material was confirmed via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy by analyzing the crystal structure, functionality, morphology, chemical property, and electronic properties. The electrochemical study was carried out in 1.0 M KOH (alkaline media) to assess the electrochemical performance of the fabricated composite materials for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and supercapacitors. For this purpose, several various tests, like cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, galvanostatic charge discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed. The electrochemical results revealed that the fabricated MnO2/ZnO nanocomposite has a Tafel slope and overpotential of 33.7 mV dec−1 and 274 mV, respectively. The small values of the Tafel slope and overpotential confirmed that our fabricated MnO2/ZnO nanocomposite is a potential candidate for OER. Moreover, the resultant MnO2/ZnO nanocomposite has a specific capacitance of 1038.3 F g−1 and a power density of 396.3 Wh kg−1. The gadolinium vanadate doped with samarium (GdVO4:Sm3+) nanopowder was prepared by the solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method. After synthesis, in order to achieve full crystallinity, the material was annealed in air atmosphere at 900 °C. Phase identification in the post-annealed powder samples was performed by X-ray diffraction, and morphology was investigated by high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Photoluminescence characterization of emission spectrum and time resolved analysis was performed using tunable laser optical parametric oscillator excitation and streak camera. In addition to samarium emission bands, a weak broad luminescence emission band of host VO43− was also observed by the detection system. In our earlier work, we analyzed the possibility of using the host luminescence for two-color temperature sensing, improving the method by introducing the temporal dependence in line intensity ratio measurements. Here, we showed that further improvements are possible by using the machine learning approach. To facilitate the initial data assessment, we incorporated Principal Component Analysis (PCA), t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) and Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) clustering of GdVO4:Sm3+ spectra at various temperatures. We investigated electron emission characteristics of a hafnium carbide [HfC(100)] single-crystal tip at various temperatures toward finding a candidate of the next generation of emitters for electron microscopes. The emission mode changed from cold-field emission (CFE) to low-temperature and high-temperature thermal-field emission and, finally, to extended Schottky emission. The energy width at full width of half maximum of the emitted electrons was 0.2 eV in the CFE mode at an angular current of 20 μA/sr, and it showed good emission stability with current noise less than 3.5% in an electron gun of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Spatial resolution of the SEM at an acceleration voltage of 0.5 kV improved 14% by using the HfC(100)-CFE tip instead of a conventional W(310)-CFE tip. High monochromaticity and stable electron emission of the HfC(100)-CFE tip are suitable for the next generation of emitters for ultrahigh-resolution field emission SEMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of blood and artificial salivary contamination of different root-end filling materials on microleakage using a confocal laser scanning microscope and on marginal adaptation using a scanning electron microscope. Materials and Methods: Eighty noncarious single-rooted teeth with mature apices were taken. After retro-cavity preparation, they were randomly assigned into two major groups (n = 40). They were contaminated with blood and artificial saliva, respectively. Each major group was divided randomly into four subgroups (n = 10) and filled as follows: Subgroup A, Biodentine; Subgroup B, bioactive bone cement; Subgroup C, Cention N; and Subgroup D, Bio-C Repair. The samples were sectioned transversely at 1 and 2 mm from the root apex and checked under a confocal laser scanning microscope for microleakage and under an scanning electron microscope for marginal adaptation. The average mean values were calculated. Independent samples t-tests, paired t-tests, and one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc tests were done to analyze the data. Results: All the tested materials showed marginal gaps and dye leakage. The Bio-C Repair group showed the least mean marginal gap and dye leakage values, followed by bioactive bone cement, Biodentine, and Cention N, respectively, in both blood and artificial saliva contamination. However, the mean marginal gaps and dye leakage between the major groups were statistically insignificant. Conclusion: In an overall comparison, Bio-C Repair was found to be superior in terms of marginal adaptation and sealing ability under the test conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
