Abstract Purpose Paper-based artifacts hold significant cultural and social values. However, paper is intrinsically fragile to microorganisms, such as mold, due to its cellulose composition, which can serve as a microorganisms’ nutrient source. Mold not only can damage papers’ structural integrity and pose significant challenges to conservation works but also may subject individuals attending the contaminated artifacts to health risks. Current approaches for strain identification usually require extensive training, prolonged time for analysis, expensive operation costs, and higher risks of secondary damage due to sampling. Thus, in current conservation practices with mold-contaminated artifacts, little pre-screening or strain identification was performed before mold removal, and the cleaning techniques are usually broad-spectrum rather than strain-specific. With deep learning showing promising applications across various domains, this study investigated the feasibility of using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for fast in-situ recognition and classification of mold on paper. Methods Molds were first non-invasively sampled from ancient Xuan Paper-based Chinese books from the Qing and Ming dynasties. Strains were identified using molecular biology methods and the four most prevalent strains were inoculated on Xuan paper to create mockups for image collection. Microscopic images of the molds as well as their stains situated on paper were collected using a compound microscope and commercial microscope lens for cell phone cameras, which were then used for training CNN models with a transfer learning scheme to perform the classification of mold. To enable involvement and contribution from the research community, a web interface that actuates the process while providing interactive features for users to learn about the information of the classified strain was constructed. Moreover, a feedback functionality in the web interface was embedded for catching potential classification errors, adding additional training images, or introducing new strains, all to refine the generalizability and robustness of the model. Results & Conclusion In the study, we have constructed a suite of high-confidence classification CNN models for the diagnostic process for mold contamination in conservation. At the same time, a web interface was constructed that allows recurrently refining the model with human feedback through engaging the research community. Overall, the proposed framework opens new avenues for effective and timely identification of mold, thus enabling proactive and targeted mold remediation strategies in conservation.

In recent years, the research pertaining to speech recognition technology in the Kazakh language has gained significant importance. This is due to the increasing demand for natural language processing applications in the region where Kazakh is predominantly spoken. Thus, there exists an urgent requirement for precise and dependable speech recognition systems. The research study examines the application of sophisticated deep learning methodologies, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM), in facilitating speech recognition for the Kazakh language. Additionally, the investigation delves into how various techniques, including data preprocessing, acoustic modeling, and language modeling, can aid in devising effective speech recognition systems. The article deliberates on the feasible uses of speech recognition technology in the geographic area where Kazakh language is spoken and outlines its future research prospects. The automatic semantic structuring of scientific text allows for more efficient reading of research articles and is an important indexing step for academic search engines. Sequential sentence classification is an essential structuring task and targets the categorisation of sentences based on their content and context. However, the potential of transfer learning for sentence classification across different scientific domains and text types, such as full papers and abstracts, has not yet been explored in prior work. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of transfer learning for scientific sequential sentence classification. For this purpose, we derive seven research questions and present several contributions to address them: (1) We suggest a novel uniform deep learning architecture and multi-task learning for cross-domain sequential sentence classification in scientific text. (2) We tailor two transfer learning methods to deal with the given task, namely sequential transfer learning and multi-task learning. (3) We compare the results of the two best models using qualitative examples in a case study. (4) We provide an approach for the semi-automatic identification of semantically related classes across annotation schemes and analyse the results for four annotation schemes. The clusters and underlying semantic vectors are validated using k-means clustering. (5) Our comprehensive experimental results indicate that when using the proposed multi-task learning architecture, models trained on datasets from different scientific domains benefit from one another. Background: In low-middle income countries, healthcare providers primarily use paper health records for capturing data. Paper health records are utilized predominately due to the prohibitive cost of acquisition and maintenance of automated data capture devices and electronic medical records. Data recorded on paper health records is not easily accessible in a digital format to healthcare providers. The lack of real time accessible digital data limits healthcare providers, researchers, and quality improvement champions to leverage data to improve patient outcomes. In this project, we demonstrate the novel use of computer vision software to digitize handwritten intraoperative data elements from smartphone photographs of paper anesthesia charts from the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali. We specifically report our approach to digitize checkbox data, symbol-denoted systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and physiological data. Methods: We implemented approaches for removing perspective distortions from smartphone photographs, removing shadows, and improving image readability through morphological operations. YOLOv8 models were used to deconstruct the anesthesia paper chart into specific data sections. Handwritten blood pressure symbols and physiological data were identified, and values were assigned using deep neural networks. Our work builds upon the contributions of previous research by improving upon their methods, updating the deep learning models to newer architectures, as well as consolidating them into a single piece of software. Results: The model for extracting the sections of the anesthesia paper chart achieved an average box precision of 0.99, an average box recall of 0.99, and an mAP0.5-95 of 0.97. Our software digitizes checkbox data with greater than 99% accuracy and digitizes blood pressure data with a mean average error of 1.0 and 1.36 mmHg for systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively. Overall accuracy for physiological data which includes oxygen saturation, inspired oxygen concentration and end tidal carbon dioxide concentration was 85.2%. Conclusions: We demonstrate that under normal photography conditions we can digitize checkbox, blood pressure and physiological data to within human accuracy when provided legible handwriting. The research groups in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning have dedicated a substantial amount of attention to the areas of 3D object reconstruction, augmentation, and registration. Deep learning is the predominant method used in artificial intelligence for addressing computer vision challenges. However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. In summary, this report provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in three-dimensional deep learning and highlights unresolved research areas that will need to be addressed in the future.

Quality assessment in industrial applications is often carried out through visual inspection, usually performed or supported by human domain experts. However, the manual visual inspection of processes and products is error-prone and expensive. It is therefore not surprising that the automation of visual inspection in manufacturing and maintenance is heavily researched and discussed. The use of artificial intelligence as an approach to visual inspection in industrial applications has been considered for decades. Recent successes, driven by advances in deep learning, present a possible paradigm shift and have the potential to facilitate automated visual inspection, even under complex environmental conditions. For this reason, we explore the question of to what extent deep learning is already being used in the field of automated visual inspection and which potential improvements to the state of the art could be realized utilizing concepts from academic research. By conducting an extensive review of the openly accessible literature, we provide an overview of proposed and in-use deep-learning models presented in recent years. Our survey consists of 196 open-access publications, of which 31.7% are manufacturing use cases and 68.3% are maintenance use cases. Furthermore, the survey also shows that the majority of the models currently in use are based on convolutional neural networks, the current de facto standard for image classification, object recognition, or object segmentation tasks. Nevertheless, we see the emergence of vision transformer models that seem to outperform convolutional neural networks but require more resources, which also opens up new research opportunities for the future. Another finding is that in 97% of the publications, the authors use supervised learning techniques to train their models. However, with the median dataset size consisting of 2500 samples, deep-learning models cannot be trained from scratch, so it would be beneficial to use other training paradigms, such as self-supervised learning. In addition, we identified a gap of approximately three years between approaches from deep-learning-based computer vision being published and their introduction in industrial visual inspection applications. Based on our findings, we additionally discuss potential future developments in the area of automated visual inspection.

As more people express their thoughts on products on various online shopping platforms, the feelings expressed in these opinions are becoming a significant source of information for marketers and buyers. These opinions have a big impact on consumers' decision to buy the best quality product. When there are too many features or a small number of records to analyze, the decision-making process gets difficult. A recent stream of study has used the conventional quantitative star score ratings and textual content reviews in this context. In this research, a decision-making framework is proposed that relies on feature-based opinions to analyze the textual content of reviews and classify buyer's opinions, thereby assisting consumers in making long-term purchases. The framework is proposed in this paper for product purchase decision making based on feature-based opinions and deep learning. Framework consists of four components: i) Pre-processing, ii) Feature extraction, iii) Feature-based opinion classification, and iv) Decision-making. Web scraping is used to obtain the dataset of Smartphone reviews, which is subsequently clean and pre-processed using tokenization and POS tagging. From the tagged dataset, noun labeled words are retrieved, and then the probable product's features are extracted. These feature-based sentences or reviews are processed using a word embedding to generate review vectors that identify contextual information. These word vectors are used to construct hidden vectors at the word and sentence levels using a hierarchical attention method. With respect to each feature, reviews are divided into five classes: extremely positive, positive, extremely negative, negative, and neutral. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease with no effective treatment. Efficient and rapid detection plays a crucial role in mitigating and managing AD progression. Deep learning-assisted smartphone-based microfluidic paper analysis devices (μPADs) offer the advantages of low cost, good sensitivity, and rapid detection, providing a strategic pathway to address large-scale disease screening in resource-limited areas. However, existing smartphone-based detection platforms usually rely on large devices or cloud servers for data transfer and processing. Additionally, the implementation of automated colorimetric enzyme-linked immunoassay (c-ELISA) on μPADs can further facilitate the realization of smartphone μPADs platforms for efficient disease detection. This paper introduces a new deep learning-assisted offline smartphone platform for early AD screening, offering rapid disease detection in low-resource areas. The proposed platform features a simple mechanical rotating structure controlled by a smartphone, enabling fully automated c-ELISA on μPADs. Our platform successfully applied sandwich c-ELISA for detecting the β-amyloid peptide 1–42 (Aβ 1–42, a crucial AD biomarker) and demonstrated its efficacy in 38 artificial plasma samples (healthy: 19, unhealthy: 19, N = 6). Moreover, we employed the YOLOv5 deep learning model and achieved an impressive 97 % accuracy on a dataset of 1824 images, which is 10.16 % higher than the traditional method of curve-fitting results. The trained YOLOv5 model was seamlessly integrated into the smartphone using the NCNN (Tencent's Neural Network Inference Framework), enabling deep learning-assisted offline detection. A user-friendly smartphone application was developed to control the entire process, realizing a streamlined "samples in, answers out" approach. This deep learning-assisted, low-cost, user-friendly, highly stable, and rapid-response automated offline smartphone-based detection platform represents a good advancement in point-of-care testing (POCT). In the production of paper cups in industrial factories, it is tried to print high quality cups with less waste loss with the help of sensors and heating resistances mounted on the paper cup machine. In this study, a system that detects faulty products based on image processing and removes it by controlling the machine with servo motors, asynchronous motors and programmable logic controller (PLC) is designed. For fault product detection, classification has been performed using real-time Haarcascade algorithm and You Only Look Once (YOLO) algorithm which is a deep learning methods, and real-time object detection has been carried out using the OpenCv library. With this study, an effective faulty product detection and removing hardware system was realized by adapting artificial intelligence algorithms to a machine used in industry. Based on the results, a whole system can be applied to systems that involve removing a faulty product from a band in any production, packaging etc. facility is proposed. A hardware consisting of servo motors, asynchronous motors and PLC was designed to separate faulty cups from the existing paper cup production machine in this study. Then, a data set composed of 1068 images was created with images taken from the camera for faulty and faultless paper cups. Using this dataset, the effect of different deep learning methods on performance in the real-time system has been examined and successful results have been obtained. • Five Machine Learning (ML) models compared for wave height time series prediction. • Complex ML models do not outperform simple AR in wave height time series prediction. • Comment to related papers: signal decomposition in test set series is WRONG. Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. • Qualitative and quantitative detection of amine gases could be achieved by CSA. • A visible detection of beef freshness using the amine-responsive CSA was proposed. • ResNet34 had the best performance for beef freshness detection based on CSA. • T-SNE could further visualize and understand the classification process of DL. This study developed an innovative approach that combines a colourimetric sensor array (CSA) composed of twelve pH-response dyes with advanced algorithms, aiming to detect amine gases and assess the freshness of chilled beef. With the assistance of multivariate statistical analysis, the sensor array can effectively distinguish five amine gases and enable rapid quantification of trimethylamine vapour with a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.02 ppb and visually monitor the fresh levels of chilled beef. Moreover, the utilization of deep learning models (ResNet34, VGG16, and GoogleNet) for chilled beef freshness evaluation achieved an overall accuracy of 98.0 %. Furthermore, t -distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t -SNE) visualized the feature extraction process and provided explanations to understand the classification process of deep learning. Industrial collaborative robots play an essential role in smart manufacturing because they improve productivity while also ensuring workplace safety. However, the development of prognostic and health management systems to ensure the reliability of these robots has been a major challenge due to the lack of fault data. This paper proposed a digital twin scheme based on the fusion of the robot kinematic and dynamic models' information down to the powertrains (i.e., the joints motor, and gear) along with the control algorithms and uncertainty accommodation based upon deep learning. The presented digital twin concept has the potential to propel simulation-based fault prediction. Emotional intelligence (EI) involves recognizing, regulating, and understanding emotions in oneself and others, enabling effective relationship management. Emotional Intelligence acts as a differentiator in both personal and professional lives. Nevertheless, many people lack the ability of conveying and interpreting human emotions efficiently due to which they fall short in their social and professional lives. However, this can be improved if people know their Emotional Quotient (EQ) score and work towards improving it by implementing certain skills. Although traditional methods for measuring EQ exist, majority of them are manual and are built on self-efficacy based questionnaire which are often susceptible to faking. In order to overcome these lacuna, this paper proposes a digital approach that can be used for an automatic evaluation of EQ of a person via audio visual signal input. The paper devises four major factors self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation and social relationships with their weightages that can be utilised for automatic evaluation through the use of technology. The paper also proposes quantifiable parameters for measuring these factors. The integration of deep learning techniques from the field of image generation into digital rock analysis has resulted in substantial advancements. However, generating high-quality and highly controllable heterogeneous digital rocks still presents challenges and necessities. This paper reports a digital rock reconstruction method using a multi-condition denoising diffusion probabilistic model (MCDDPM). This method has the diffusion and denoising processes inherent in the diffusion model, ensuring high-quality reconstructed samples. Meanwhile, various physical property parameters are embedded as conditions in the network layers of the model at multiple scales, enhancing the conditional control ability of this method. We compared the porosity, pore size distribution, and two-point correlation coefficient under the same conditions, as well as the evaluation indicators of different methods. The comparative results provide convincing evidence for the accuracy of our proposed digital rock reconstruction method. In addition, studies on the control effect of different conditions on reconstructed samples also demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy. Therefore, MCDDPM can reconstruct reasonable heterogeneous digital rocks based on combinations of physical property conditions, which provides effective technical support for expanding the library of heterogeneous digital rock samples and even achieving zero-shot learning of digital rocks. • The real numerical rock possesses strong heterogeneity, and the method proposed in this paper can effectively reconstruct heterogeneous digital rock. • Compared to other deep learning network models, the reconstruction effect of the method proposed in this paper is at a high level. • The method we propose supports multiple physical property conditions as input. This paper considers two pertinent research inquiries: 'Can an AI-based predictive framework be utilised for the optimisation of solar energy management?' and 'What are the ways in which the AI-based predictive framework can be integrated within the Smart Grid infrastructure to improve grid reliability and efficiency?' The study deploys a Deep Learning model based on Long Short-Term Memory techniques, leading to refined accuracy in solar electricity generation forecasts. Such an AI-supported methodology aids power grid operators in comprehensive planning, thereby ensuring a robust electricity supply. The effectiveness of this framework is tested using performance metrics such as MAE, RMSE, nMAE, nRMSE, and $ R^2 $ R 2 . A persistent model is utilised as a reference for comparison. Despite a slight decrease in predictive precision with the expansion of the forecast horizon, the proposed AI-based framework consistently surpasses the persistent model, particularly for horizons beyond two hours. An accurate estimation of three-dimensional (3D) temperature fields in channel flows is challenging but critical for many important applications such as heat exchangers, radiation energy collectors, and enhanced geothermal systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the possibility of inferring temperature fields from concentration fields for laminar convection flows in a 3D channel using a machine learning (ML) approach. The study involves generation of data using 3D numerical simulations, application of deep learning methodology using conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs), and analysis of how dataset selection affects model performance. The model is also tested for applicability in different convection scenarios. Results show that cGANs can successfully infer temperature fields from concentration fields, and the reconstruction accuracy is sensitive to the training dataset selected. Online ride-hailing services provide additional transportation capability by recruiting private vehicles to meet people's growing travel demand. To ensure the profitability of drivers and platforms, pick-up efficiency and frequency must be maintained at high levels. Therefore, consistency between the spatial distribution of drivers and that of travel demand becomes a key issue to address. This paper proposes a prediction-based iterative Kuhn-Munkres approach for service vehicle reallocation in the context of large-scale online ride-hailing. Firstly, preliminaries are formally defined and a novel mathematical model for the problem is proposed. Secondly, a deep spatio-temporal residual perception network is designed to accurately predict travel demand. Thirdly, an iterative Kuhn-Munkres approach combined with an improved A-Star algorithm is developed to reallocate service vehicles to spatial locations according to their distinct travel demand densities. Several enhanced sampling techniques rely on the definition of collective variables to effectively explore free energy landscapes. The existing variables that describe the progression along a reactive pathway offer an elegant solution but face a number of limitations. In this paper, we address these challenges by introducing a new path-like collective variable called the "deep-locally non-linear-embedding," which is inspired by principles of the locally linear embedding technique and is trained on a reactive trajectory. The variable mimics the ideal reaction coordinate by automatically generating a non-linear combination of features through a differentiable generalized autoencoder that combines a neural network with a continuous k-nearest neighbor selection. Among the key advantages of this method is its capability to automatically choose the metric for searching neighbors and to learn the path from state A to state B without the need to handpick landmarks a priori. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DeepLNE by showing that the progression along the path variable closely approximates the ideal reaction coordinate in toy models, such as the Müller-Brown potential and alanine dipeptide. Over the years the number of research publications per year is growing exponentially. Finding research papers of quality from the massive literature of relevant articles is a challenging and time-consuming task. The approaches in the latest literature address citation recommendation by utilizing large bibliographic information and use machine learning and deep learning methods for the task. These techniques clearly require a large amount of training data as well as machines with high processing power. To overcome these issues, we propose a novel method by modifying the popular hyperlink induced topic search (HITS), a web page ranking algorithm, as citation recommendation using hyperlink induced topic search (CR-HITS) that works on a directed and weighted heterogeneous bibliographic network containing diverse types of nodes and edges. We define effective scoring schemes for nodes and edges based on basic bibliographic information like citations of papers, number of publications of an author, etc. Given a few seed papers, the citation recommendation algorithm CR-HITS is run on small neighborhoods of the seed papers and hence the time taken by the execution is very small to yield the final recommendations. To the best of our knowledge, HITS has been used for the first time for the citation recommendation problem. We perform extensive experimentation on DBLP (version-11) and ACM (version-9) datasets and compare the results with many baseline methods in terms of MAP, MRR, and recall@N measures. The performance of the proposed algorithms is superior with respect to the MAP metric and matches the second best for the other two metrics. Since the top two algorithms use deep learning methods and use much larger bibliographic information including abstracts of the papers, we claim that our approach utilizes very low resources, yet yields recommendations that are very close to the top recommendations. In order to improve the security and performance of the oral English instant translation model, this paper optimizes the instant translation model through the Internet of Things (IoT) security technology and deep learning technology. In this paper, the real-time translation model based on deep learning and IoT technology is analyzed in detail to show the application of these two technologies in the real-time translation model, and the related information security issues are discussed. Meanwhile, this paper proposes a method combining deep learning network and IoT technology to further improve the security of instant translation model. The experimental results show that under the optimized model, the parameter upload time is 60 seconds, the aggregation calculation time is 6.5 seconds, and the authentication time is 7.5 seconds. Moreover, the average recognition accuracy of the optimized model reaches 93.1%, and it is superior to the traditional machine translation method in accuracy and real-time, which has wide practical value and application prospects. Word2vec is often used in text sentiment analysis to generate word vector, which maps the same word into the same vector. Although Word2vec plays a very good effect in the initial model training task, it still cannot solve the problems of polysemy and new use of old words, which leads to inaccurate extracted features and affects the final classification results. In this paper, BERT model was used to vectorize the review text of tourist attractions, and fusion attention mechanism and long and short-term memory model were used to extract the emotional features of the text for classification at the feature extraction layer.
