Over long stretches of the north-east coast of Qeqertarsuaq (Disko), the sediments in the Nuussuaq Basin and their relations to the volcanic rocks are concealed beneath numerous landslides. Two cores south of Qullissat drilled by Falconbridge Ltd in 1994, targeting a native-iron-bearing igneous body assumed to be a sill, present well-preserved sections through the hidden succession. We have dated the sediments in the cores palynologically. The lower part comprises 115 m of deltaic deposits, including coal seams, of the Cretaceous Atane Formation, Qilakitsoq Member (late Turonian to early Coniacian age), which has not been recorded on Disko before. The two cores and five short coastal cliff sections are mutually correlatable and correlate further to the coal seams earlier mined at Qullissat; the coals are hereby dated for the first time. The Cretaceous rocks are overlain by 15 m of marine deposits, mainly mudstones, of the Danian Eqalulik Formation, with a hiatus of c. 24 million years. The igneous body of native-iron-bearing basaltic andesite has a thick, red-oxidised, vesiculated and brecciated top zone and is interpreted as a subaerial lava flow belonging to the Asuk Member of the Vaigat Formation. The flow has run perhaps up to 20 km from the eruption site to the sea, where it ponded and attained a thickness of 138 m, the thickest lava flow in the West Greenland Basalt Group. The flow is overlain by 22 m of non-marine sandstones and mudstones of the Atanikerluk Formation. The core correlation indicates the existence of a fault with c. 90 m vertical displacement between the two drill sites. The structural relations of the various parts of the Atane Formation along the north-east coast of Disko necessitate the assumption of another hidden, prevolcanic fault south of Qullissaaqqat.

Introduction The use of routine postoperative chest drains after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) of the lung is a practice based on tradition with the aim of draining fluid and air. However, new evidence suggests that chest drains can be avoided in selected cases. With this randomised controlled trial, we wish to establish the efficacy and safety of avoiding postoperative chest drains compared with routine postoperative chest drains. Methods and analysis This is a two-centre randomised controlled trial without allocation concealment, but where randomisation occurs after the end of procedure leaving operative personnel blinded during surgery. The sample size is calculated to show a difference in pain measurements using the Numeric Rating Scale under different circumstances and at different time points to show superiority of the intervention. The trial is pragmatic by design to reflect the daily clinical scenario and with the aim of increasing the external validity of the results. Ethics and dissemination Approval by the local ethics committees has been obtained for both sites. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05358158) prior to inclusion. The results of the trial will be disseminated by publication in an international journal and presentation at major international thoracic surgical meetings. Background: Several studies have revealed widening of inequalities in life expectancy, but little is known about the recent changes in health expectancy nationally and between socioeconomic groups. This study examines dynamics of national and education-specific life expectancy and health expectancies at age 50 years in Denmark from 2004/2007 to 2015. Methods: Nationwide register data on education and mortality were linked and combined with Danish health data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and changes in life expectancy and three health expectancy indicators were estimated by Sullivan’s method. Results: From 2004 to 2015, national life expectancy at age 50 years increased by 2.4 years for men and 2.1 years for women. Simultaneously, after an initial rapid improvement from 2004 to 2007, the pace of progress in health expectancy decreased. From 2007 to 2015, the difference in life expectancy at age 50 years between men with long and short education increased from 4.3 to 5.0 years. For women, the corresponding increase in the life expectancy gap was less pronounced from 3.5 to 3.8 years. The educational gap in lifetime without long-term illness decreased from 4.6 years to 3.1 years for men and from 6.1 years to 4.6 years for women. On the contrary, the educational gap increased for lifetime without activity limitations and in self-rated good health. Conclusions: Previously observed improvements in health expectancy in Denmark slowed down despite continuing progress in life expectancy.
