mHealth applications (apps) are tools that can enhance research by efficiently collecting and storing large amounts of data. However, data collection alone does not lead to change. Innovation and practice change occur through utilisation of evidence. The volume of data collected raises questions regarding utilisation of data by nurses and midwives, and how data from mHealth apps can be used to improve person-centred practice. There is limited empirical evidence and a lack of direction from global health authorities to guide nurses and midwives in this area. To describe strategies for nurses and midwives that could enhance the effective use of data generated by mHealth apps to inform person-centred practice. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate reflection and generate actions for data utilisation when using mHealth apps in nursing research and practice. This discussion paper has been informed by current evidence, the integrated-Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework, and research experience as part of doctoral study. Before engaging in data collection using mHealth apps, nurses and midwives would benefit from considering the nature of the evidence collected, available technological infrastructure, and staff skill levels. When collecting data and interpreting results, use of a team approach supported by engaged leadership and external facilitation is invaluable. This provides support to operate apps, and more importantly use the data collected to inform person-centred practice. This paper addresses the limited available evidence to guide nurses and midwives when using mHealth apps to collect and use data to inform practice change. It highlights the need for appropriate technology, external facilitative support, engaged leadership, and a team approach to collect meaningful evidence using mHealth apps. The high prevalence and costs of urinary incontinence and related pelvic floor disorders in adults highlights the need for competent nurses and advanced practice nurses who can provide high-quality continence and pelvic health care. However, challenges exist in recognizing this as a nursing specialty, preparing new and experienced nurses with specialty knowledge and skills, increasing the number and diversity of the workforce, and promoting individual achievement and professional recognition as a continence and pelvic health nursing specialist. This White Paper provides recommendations based on evidence and expert opinion to support the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associate's efforts in advancing the roles of registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses in the expanded specialty area of continence and pelvic health nursing. Many countries suffer from skilled labor shortages in nursing. One way to increase the nurse labor supply is to raise their retention rates. Yet, though several studies exist on factors associated with the nurse labor supply at different levels, literature on factors associated with nurses' decisions to leave their occupation is relatively scarce. Based on German administrative data, I analyze the determinants of nurses' decisions to leave their profession. My results suggest that younger nurses, nurses in the social sector, and nurses working with smaller employers leave their occupation more often than their counterparts, irrespective of their specific nursing occupations and care settings. Nurses leave more often where more alternative occupational options are available. Nurses who have been unemployed and nurses who have been employed in a different field have a higher probability of leaving the occupation, whereas nurses who just finished vocational training only have a moderate propensity to leave. Female nurses leave less often if employed part time. Female nurses in part time leave even more seldom if they have children. Background: Complete documentation of critical care events in the accident and emergency department (AED) is essential. Due to the fast-paced and complex nature of resuscitation cases, missing data is a common issue during emergency situations., Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a tablet-based resuscitation record on documentation completeness during medical resuscitations and nurses' perceptions of the use of the tablet app., Methods: A mixed methods approach was adopted. To collect quantitative data, randomized retrospective reviews of paper-based resuscitation records before implementation of the tablet (Pre-App Paper; n=176), paper-based resuscitation records after implementation of the tablet (Post-App Paper; n=176), and electronic tablet-based resuscitation records (Post-App Electronic; n=176) using a documentation completeness checklist were conducted. The checklist was validated by 4 experts in the emergency medicine field. The content validity index (CVI) was calculated using the scale CVI (S-CVI). The universal agreement S-CVI was 0.822, and the average S-CVI was 0.939. The checklist consisted of the following 5 domains: basic information, vital signs, procedures, investigations, and medications. To collect qualitative data, nurses' perceptions of the app for electronic resuscitation documentation were obtained using individual interviews. Reporting of the qualitative data was guided by Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Studies (COREQ) to enhance rigor., Results: A significantly higher documentation rate in all 5 domains (ie, basic information, vital signs, procedures, investigations, and medications) was present with Post-App Electronic than with Post-App Paper, but there were no significant differences in the 5 domains between Pre-App Paper and Post-App Paper. The qualitative analysis resulted in main categories of "advantages of tablet-based documentation of resuscitation records," "challenges with tablet-based documentation of resuscitation records," and "areas for improvement of tablet-based resuscitation records.", Conclusions: This study demonstrated that higher documentation completion rates are achieved with electronic tablet-based resuscitation records than with traditional paper records. During the transition period, the nurse documenters faced general problems with resuscitation documentation such as multitasking and unique challenges such as software updates and a need to familiarize themselves with the app's layout. Automation should be considered during future app development to improve documentation and redistribute more time for patient care. Optimising stoma appliances to manage stoma output to prevent leakage, associated peri-stomal skin damage and the subsequent negative impacts on quality of life is a key role for stomal therapy nursing. Use of deep convex stoma appliances to achieve optimal management of stoma output is often required when stomas are retracted, in deep skin folds or with uneven skin surface. Choosing convexity has often been described as subjective using observation combined with clinical experience and a period of trial and error to achieve appropriate appliance selection. This paper describes the methodology to replicate assessment of the depth and slope of convexity, individualised to the person's stoma in a skin fold using a camera and common measurement tools. Depression is a global health issue. It is spoken about everywhere and can affect anyone at any age. In the past century, medical technology and preventative medicines have increased in availability and accessibility, resulting in an increase in global life expectancy. However, as a result of increased life expectancy, the number of elderly adults have also increased. Due to chronic conditions, decreased social support, increased physical dependency and other natural events that come with age, it has caused a great number of elderly individuals to be impacted by depression. Furthermore, changes in traditional family and social structures have made it harder for the elderly to be cared for at home by their children and has resulted in an increase of elderly individuals living in nursing homes. Due to the loss of independence associated with nursing homes, it has further increased the prevalence of depression amongst the elderly. Elderly depression is not normal and can greatly impact quality of life and result in poor health outcomes, thus it is imperative that nurses address this issue. The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of depression to the elderly population and to community health nursing, as well as to explore potential solutions for elderly depression using a strengths-based approach. Furthermore, this paper discussed implications for nursing practice on elderly depression. Aim: The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of nurse academics' experiences with the transition from clinical practice to academia and throughout their whole career trajectory., Design: Qualitative study design., Methods: Three focus group interviews with 17 nurse academics employed at a University in Norway were conducted in May and June 2020. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis., Results: Nurse academics experienced several diverse career transitions that continued throughout their whole career trajectory, affecting their daily life. Three interconnected themes were identified: 'clinically confident, yet academically uncertain', 'balancing the academic role' and 'lost in academic transition'., Conclusion: This study contributes to a deeper understanding of nurse academics' experiences of transitioning into their academic role and identity. Transition was found not as separate occurrences but was described as several ongoing and concurrent processes throughout their whole career trajectory regardless of seniority level or academic experience. These transitions encompass shifts in identity, new responsibilities and increased tasks, yet often occur without adequate support. As a result, nurse academics may lack the essential skills and knowledge of the academic role., Impact: This study provides insights into nurse academics' transition from clinical practice to academia and throughout their whole career trajectory. There is a dearth of information on the role of the pediatric palliative advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) reported in the literature, and yet, the role is expanding. Advances in technology and health care are helping children with medical complexity live longer, and the demand for pediatric palliative care is growing. As programs expand to meet this need, there are new opportunities for pediatric palliative APRNs to practice outside acute care consultative models, within large children's hospitals. The aim of this article was to describe the expanding role of the pediatric palliative APRN using a progressive case study that describes how these expanding roles can collaborate using evidence-based practice and expert consensus to define their roles. There is global recognition that mental health nursing can be stressful and have detrimental effects on nurses' well-being and retention. With substantial nursing shortages, there is an urgent need to attract and retain nurses to sustain this workforce and provide effective mental healthcare. Mental health transition programs provide vital recruitment pathways and support novice registered nurses, enrolled nurses and experienced registered generalist nurses moving into this field. There is little evidence, however, on the well-being, resilience, and retention of nurses transitioning into mental health. The primary aims for this cross-sectional study were to describe demographic characteristics, perceived stress, well-being, resilience, mental illness stigma attitudes, work satisfaction, and turnover intention of four nurse cohorts entering mental health transition programs: generalist registered nurses, graduate and post-graduate registered nurses, and enrolled nurses; to explore relationships between these variables; and explore differences between these four nurse cohorts. Findings (n = 87) included overall moderate perceived stress, moderate well-being and resilience, high work satisfaction, low stigma, and low turnover intention. Higher turnover intention was associated with lower age and work satisfaction, and higher perceived stress. Generalist RNs had significantly higher stress and stigmatizing attitudes than Enrolled Nurses. Secondary analysis of well-being scores identified 14 nurses with scores indicating depression, with significantly lower resilience and work satisfaction, and significantly higher stress than the rest of the sample. To help prevent attrition, it is vital that mental health services provide tailored well-being initiatives during transition and intervene early to provide support for nurses with mental distress., (© 2023 The Authors. Aim: To summarise, interpret and synthesize research findings on patients' and nurses' experiences of caring in nursing across clinical practices., Background: Caring is a universal element of nursing; however, economic restrictions often negatively impact health services, and time shortages and limited numbers of staff may characterize care encounters. It is unclear how these contextual conditions affect patients' and nurses' experiences of caring., Design and Methods: This integrative literature review covers papers published between 2000 and 2022. Four databases-PubMed, PsycINFO (via Ovid), MEDLINE (via Ovid) and CINAHL (via EBSCO)-were systematically searched for eligible papers in May 2022. The included studies were critically appraised. Content analysis was performed to interpret and synthesize the findings. In accordance with the EQUATOR guidelines, the PRISMA 2020 and PRISMA-S checklists were used. An Integrative review methodology guided the process., Findings: In total, 33 studies were included in the review. Three themes captured the experiences of caring in nursing: (1) the complexity of the nursing care context, (2) the professionalism of the nurse, and (3) the trusting patient-nurse relationship., Conclusion: The experience of caring in nursing depended on nurses' competence and discretion in the personal encounter framed by the nursing context. The caring relationship was based on reciprocity, but it remains asymmetrical, as the nurse had the power and responsibility to empower the patient. Globally, one of every eight nurses is a migrant, but few studies have focused on the healthcare experiences of migrant nurses (MNs) as consumers or recipients of healthcare. We address this gap by examining MNs and their acculturation, barriers to healthcare access, and perceptions of healthcare encounters as consumers. For this mixed-methods study, a convenience sample of MNs working in Europe and Israel was recruited. The quantitative component's methods included testing the reliability of scales contained within the questionnaire and using Hayes Process Model #4 to test for mediation. The qualitative component's methods included analyzing interviews with iterative inductive thematic analysis. Quantitative findings on MNs (n = 73) indicated that the association between acculturation and perception of the healthcare encounter, which MNs experienced as healthcare consumers, was mediated by barriers to healthcare access, even after adjusting for age and gender (p = 0.03). Qualitative interviews with MNs (n = 13) provided possible explanations for the quantitative findings. Even after working in the host country's healthcare system for several years, MNs reported difficulties with their healthcare encounters as healthcare consumers, not only due to their limited knowledge about the culture and healthcare resources but also due to the biased responses they received., (© 2023 The Authors. Aim: To examine the experiences of internationally qualified nurses, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, transitioning to and working in the aged care sector of high-income countries., Design: A scoping review., Data Sources: CINAHL, MEDLINE and PSychINFO databases were searched to find eligible literature published from January 2010 onwards., Review Methods: This scoping review was based on the framework by Arksey and O'Malley and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The literature search was conducted by the first author, and all three authors reviewed the retrieved studies for eligibility and inclusion., Results: Fourteen articles were eligible. Data was categorized into three broad themes: stress of migration and transition; miscommunication, racism and discrimination; and aged care specific challenges which included two sub-themes 'shock of aged care' and 'bottom care'., Conclusion: Internationally qualified nurses, particularly if they are culturally and linguistically diverse, face unique stresses and challenges in aged care and face barriers in the recognition of skills and qualifications. The under-utilization of skills is not only a loss in terms of patient care but is linked to fears of de-skilling, losing professional development and opportunities for career progression., Impact: Internationally qualified nurses are positioned as a solution to aged care shortages in high-income countries; however, there is a scarcity of research exploring their experiences. Aim: To gain a deeper understanding of what is important to nurses when thinking about shift patterns and the organisation of working time., Design: A cross-sectional survey of nursing staff working across the UK and Ireland collected quantitative and qualitative responses., Methods: We recruited from two National Health Service Trusts and through an open call via trade union membership, online/print nursing profession magazines and social media. Worked versus preferred shift length/pattern, satisfaction and choice over shift patterns and nurses' views on aspects related to work and life (when working short, long, rotating shifts) were analysed with comparisons of proportions of agreement and crosstabulation. Qualitative responses on important factors related to shift preferences were analysed with inductive thematic analysis., Results: Eight hundred and seventy-three survey responses were collected. When nurses worked long shifts and rotating shifts, lower proportions reported being satisfied with their shifts and working their preferred shift length and pattern. Limited advantages were realised when comparing different shift types; however, respondents more frequently associated 'low travel costs' and 'better ability to do paid overtime' with long shifts and 'healthy diet/exercise' with short shifts; aspects related to rotating shifts often had the lowest proportions of agreement. In the qualitative analysis, three themes were developed: 'When I want to work', 'Impacts to my life outside work' and 'Improving my work environment'. Reasons for nurses' shift preferences were frequently related to nurses' priorities outside of work, highlighting the importance of organising schedules that support a good work-life balance., Relevance to Clinical Practice: General scheduling practices like adhering to existing shift work guidelines, using consistent and predictable shift patterns and facilitating flexibility over working time were identified by nurses as enablers for their preferences and priorities. Aim: To explore registered nurses' thinking strategies during the drug administration process in nursing homes., Design: An exploratory qualitative design., Methods: Eight registered nurses, one male and seven female, in five nursing home wards in Mid-Norway were observed during 15 drug dispensing rounds (175 drug dispensing episodes). Think Aloud sessions with follow-up individual interviews were conducted. The Think Aloud data were analysed using deductive qualitative content analysis based on Marsha Fonteyn's description of 17 thinking strategies. Interview data were used to clarify missing information and validate the content of Think Aloud data., Results: The registered nurses used all 17 thinking strategies described by Fonteyn, including several variants of each strategy. The three most frequent were 'providing explanations', 'setting priorities' and 'drawing conclusions'. In addition, we found two novel thinking strategies that did not fit into Fonteyn's template, which were labelled 'controlling' and 'interacting'. Among all strategies, 'controlling' was by far the most used, serving as a means for the registered nurses to stay on track and navigate through various interruptions, while also minimising errors during drug dispensing., Conclusion: The study highlights the diverse thinking strategies employed by registered nurses in nursing homes during medication administration. The findings emphasise the multifaceted nature of medication administration and underscore the importance of skilled personnel in ensuring medication safety. Background: The previous studies have revealed that the psychological state of nurses, who work in the front line, is negatively affected by the situations that created high pressure such as epidemics and disasters in the past., Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine some characteristics that affect nurses' humor styles and psychological well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic period, and to determine the relationship between humor styles and psychological well-being., Method: The research was conducted in a cross-sectional study. The sample of the study consists of 260 nurses from a city in eastern Turkey. The data have been collected by using a personal information form, the Humor Styles Scale, and the Psychological Well-Being Scale in the study. Frequency, arithmetic mean, minimum and maximum, correlation analysis t test in the independent groups, 1-way analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test have been used in the analysis of the data. This study aligns with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist., Results: It is determined that the mean age of the nurses is 28.35 ± 6.19 years, and the age range is between 20 and 47 years. It is determined that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between "self-improving humor" and "participatory humor," which are among the harmonious/positive humor styles of the nurses, and the total Psychological Well-Being Scale score (P < .05). It is determined that there is a statistically significant negative relationship between "aggressive humor," which is one of the inharmonious/negative humor styles, and the total Psychological Well-Being Scale score (P < .05)., Discussion: The results support that nurses' use of self-enhancing and participatory humor contributes to psychological well-being., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Background: Indirect calorimetry (IC) is the gold standard to monitor energy expenditure in critically ill patients. In several intensive care units (ICUs), nurses are responsible for carrying out the measurements., Aim: The aim of this study was to assess nurses' perception of their involvement in IC., Study Design: This was a prospective survey conducted in the surgical ICU of a French university hospital after 18 months of use of the Q-NRG + ® calorimeter (COSMED©, Italy). All nurses who have used the calorimeter in the previous 6 months in this ICU were questioned through a questionnaire about their theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in using it., Results: The participation rate was 93% (28/30 surveyed). All the respondents understood the objectives of performing an IC and 23 of them (82%) had used the device at least once in the previous 6 months. All the users thought it was pertinent that ICU nurses were in charge of the IC measurements, 16 of them (70%) reported having been formally trained, mostly by a colleague, and 17 (77%) felt comfortable with the device after 2 to 5 uses. The five non-users (8%) did not have the opportunity to do so. Theoretical and practical knowledge could be improved as only 5 of the users (22%) declared to know the main criteria of reliability of the IC measurement and 4 of them (18%) declared to know the maintenance and cleaning protocol of the device., Conclusion: Nurses quickly felt comfortable with the Q-NRG + ® in this ICU. Aim: To integrate research literature regarding careers, career development and factors influencing the career development of doctorally prepared nurses., Design: An integrative review., Data Sources: Medline, CINAHL and Embase were searched in June 2022 without time restrictions., Methods: Peer-reviewed empirical publications written in English with different types of study designs were included. Two researchers independently applied eligibility criteria, selected studies and conducted quality appraisals using Joanna Briggs checklists. Data were extracted and analysed using a convergent integrated approach with thematic analysis. Themes were established within three categories based on the research questions: career, career development and factors influencing career development., Results: Twenty-two studies were included. Nine themes were identified. One theme regarding careers describes that doctorally prepared nurses need to prioritize work within different positions. The two themes focusing on career development described the need to determine career goals after the doctorate and further develop competencies. Six themes described factors influencing career development: 'Intrinsic motivation to improve health care and nursing education', 'Available support sources', 'Professional development programmes', 'Work-life balance', 'Organizational infrastructures for career advancement' and 'Competition and hostile treatment among colleagues'., Conclusion: Limited knowledge of the careers and career development of doctorally prepared nurses was found. Doctorally prepared nurses need to balance work with various part-time positions. Careers and career development could be supported by the development of structures for career advancement as well as supportive working environments., Impact: Doctorally prepared nurses with strong careers are important to health care and nursing as they generate and implement new knowledge into clinical practice and thereby support the improvement of (nursing) care and patient outcomes. Background: Nurse staffing committees offer a means for improving nurse staffing and nursing work environments in hospital settings by giving direct care nurses opportunities to contribute to staffing decision-making. These committees may be mandated by state law, as is the case currently in nine U.S. states, yet little is known about the experiences of staff nurses who have served on them., Purpose and Design: This qualitative descriptive study was conducted to explore the experiences of direct care nurses who have served on nurse staffing committees, and to better understand how such committees operate., Methods: Participants were recruited by sharing information about the study through online nursing organization platforms, hospital nurse leadership, state chapters of national nursing organizations, social media, and nonconfidential nursing email lists. A total of 14 nurses from five U.S. states that have had nurse staffing committee legislation in place for at least three years were interviewed between April and October 2022., Results: Four themes were identified from the data-a "well-valued" committee versus one with "locked away" potential: committee value; "who benefits": staffing committee beneficiaries; "not just the numbers": defining adequate staffing; and "constantly pushing": committee members' persistence., Conclusions: The results of this study highlight the importance of actualizing staff nurse autonomy within nurse staffing committees-and invite further exploration into how staff nurses' perspectives can be better valued by nursing and nonnursing hospital leadership. Nurse staffing committees generally recommend staffing-related policies and practices that address the needs of patients and nurses, and work to find areas of compromise between nursing and hospital entities. Objective: The aims of this study were to evaluate nursing caregiver well-being and identify interventions for improving well-being and practice environments., Background: Healthcare worker well-being and burnout command increasing attention in the wake of the pandemic. Experts recommend utilization of validated measurements to assess burnout, well-being, and contributing factors., Methods: Using a descriptive, cross-sectional, mixed-methods study design, an online survey, which included the Professional Quality of Life-5, Meaning and Joy in Work Questionnaire, and open-ended questions, was administered to nurses and unlicensed assistive caregivers in an academic health system., Results: Caregivers reported moderate compassion satisfaction, low burnout and compassion fatigue, and low-moderate levels of meaning and joy in work. Overall and subscale scores varied primarily based on age, experience, and role. Top causes of stress and recommendations for improvement were identified., Conclusion: The levels of meaning and joy in work among nursing caregivers continue to be of concern for organizational leaders. Aim: To describe experiences of work-related stress, stress reactions and coping strategies among registered nurses (RNs) in the ambulance service (AS)., Design: A descriptive and qualitative design., Methods: Participants were recruited from eight different ambulance stations from different geographical locations in central Sweden. Data were collected from 14 RNs during the period from January 2022 to May 2022 using a semi-structured interview guide. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse data using an abductive approach., Results: Three categories describe the RNs' experiences; (1) Situations that cause work-related stress, (2) Reactions and feelings that occur and (3) Management of work-related stress. These three main categories included a total of 12 subcategories. Work-related stress was experienced when participants were a part of traumatic events or experienced insufficient cooperation or a disturbing event in the work environment. The different causes lead to different kinds of reactions with feelings of frustration, fear and loneliness being prominent. To manage the work-related stress, RNs used different kinds of strategies and support from colleagues or lack thereof seemed to have a major impact., Conclusions: Findings revealed the importance of having competent colleagues in the AS. Working with a competent colleague can reduce experiences of stress and prevent feelings of loneliness. It is important for the AS to provide stress-reduction support, to promote cooperation and to maintain and develop RNs' professional competence to ensure quality care and patient safety in the AS., (© 2023 The Authors. Aim: To explore if and how nurses' perceived organizational support affects their ability to handle and resolve ethical value conflicts., Design: A mixed methods design with a longitudinal questionnaire survey and focus group interviews., Methods: A questionnaire survey in six hospitals in two Swedish regions provided data from 711 nurses responding twice (November-January 2019/2020 and November-January 2020/2021). A cross-lagged path model tested the mutual prospective influence between the organizational climate of perceived organizational support, frequency of ethical value conflicts, and resulting moral distress. Four focus group interviews were conducted with 21 strategically selected nurses (April-October 2021). Qualitative data collection and analysis were inspired by Grounded Theory., Results: A climate of perceived organizational support was empowering, contributing to role security. It prospectively decreased the frequency of ethical value conflicts but not the moral distress when conflicts did occur., Conclusion: It is important to facilitate the development of perceived organizational support among nurses, but also to reduce the occurrence of ethical value conflicts that the nurses cannot resolve., Implications for the Profession: By ensuring a shared care ideology, good inter-professional relations within the entire care organization, providing clear and supportive organizational structures, and utilizing competence adequately, healthcare managers can facilitate and support the development of perceived organizational support among nurses. Nurses who are empowered by perceived organizational support are stimulated by and take pride in their work and experience the work as meaningful and joyful., Impact: The study addressed the question of whether healthcare organizations could support nurses to resolving ethical value conflicts, and thus reduce moral distress. Perceived organizational support is related to factors such as ideological caring alignment and supportive organizational preconditions. Background: In 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) broke out worldwide, leading to a pandemic. Studies have shown that COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs) require more nursing care than other patients. ICU nurses who care for patients with COVID-19 have shown signs of psychological and physical strain., Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate ICU nurses' experiences of caring for patients with COVID-19 in ICUs during the first wave of the pandemic., Study Design: A qualitative, descriptive and inductive approach was used. A total of 70 blog posts from 13 bloggers in the United States, Great Britain, Finland and Sweden were analysed using qualitative inductive manifest content analysis., Results: The results reveal an overall theme: 'An overturned existence under extreme conditions'. Furthermore, three categories-'the virus caused changes in work and private lives', 'unreasonable demands', and to hold on to caring ideals thanks to the support of others'-and seven subcategories were identified., Conclusions: Caring for patients with COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic was demanding because of a lack of knowledge about the disease and the severity of the illness. This led to ICU nurses experiencing extreme conditions that affected various aspects of their lives. Support from colleagues and teamwork were revealed to be particularly important for how nurses dealt with the demands of working during a pandemic, as was sufficient recovery time between work shifts., Relevance to Clinical Practice: Work in ICUs was challenging and demanding, even before the pandemic. This study contributes to an understanding of the complex work environment that existed in hospitals during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: A model was hypothesised by integrating two theoretical models: the compassion satisfaction-compassion fatigue and empowerment models. This study aimed to assess the extent to which this integrated model can explain the relationships between paediatric nurses' burnout quality of life, perceived patient safety and work-related variables during the COVID-19 pandemic., Background: Nurses' burnout is negatively associated with quality of life (QOL) and positively with patient safety. Several theoretical models were introduced to explain burnout determinants and outcomes such as Golembiewski, Munzenrider and Stevenson model, Leiter and Maslach's process model, and Lee and Ashforth's model. However, few models described burnout in relation to QOL or patient safety., Methods: A sample of 225 paediatric nurses responded to questionnaires about burnout, QOL, adverse events and work-related variables. Compassion satisfaction - compassion fatigue and empowerment models were integrated into a single model and tested using structural equation modelling analysis. This study was prepared and is reported according to the STROBE checklist., Results: The final model explained 65% of the variance of burnout and 37% of the variance of QOL. The work-related variables (co-workers' support, job satisfaction, satisfaction with the monthly salary, participation in continuous education and exposure to violence) are predicting paediatric nurses' burnout and quality of life., Conclusion: The Compassion satisfaction - compassion fatigue -Empowerment integrated model allows for assessing the different paths in the relationship between work-related variables and burnout., Relevance to Clinical Practice: These results might be essential for nursing managers to develop strategies that improve nurses' work environment and minimise their burnout during COVID-19 pandemic. These strategies should focus on enhancing co-workers' support, job satisfaction and participation in continuous education. Background: Because patients diagnosed with brain death in intensive care units constitute a potential cadaveric donor group for organ transplantation, intensive care units are potential donor sources. Nurses who closely monitor the patient collaborate with medical personnel in the recognition and early diagnosis of brain death. Nurses also have an important role in supporting the patient's family. Therefore, it is very important for nurses to know the diagnostic criteria for brain death., Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of theoretical education and video-assisted education in equipping intensive care nurses to recognize brain death., Study Design: A randomized, experimental study was conducted between February and May 2020 with a total of 50 intensive care nurses, split into 25 in the video-assisted training group and 25 in the theoretical training group. In study, intensive care nurses were given a theoretical training and video-assisted training on brain death criteria. One group was trained theoretically and the other group used a video showing criteria for brainstem reflexes (pupil assessment, spontaneous breathing, corneal reflex, retching and coughing assessments) and deep tendon reflexes in a simulated patient, supported by animation. The data were collected before, immediately after and 3 months after the training using the Brain Death Criteria Knowledge Test, the Brain Death Case Test, and the Training Effectiveness Evaluation Form. The independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Friedman test, Wilcoxon test, and Chi-square test were used for statistical analysis of data., Results: It was found that the knowledge scores of both groups immediately after training and 3 months after training were higher than before the training (p < .001). However, the post-training knowledge scores of the video-assisted training group were significantly higher than those of the theoretical training group (p = .011)., Conclusions: To enable intensive care nurses to identify brain death, video-assisted training with a simulated patient is recommended, as is repeating the training at regular intervals., Relevance to Clinical Practice: The simulated patient video-assisted training method can be used for in-service training to provide intensive care nurses with the ability to identify brain death. There is a growing worldwide interest in educating nurses at an advanced level. Advanced practice nursing (APN) refers to an umbrella term for master-educated nurses working within expanded nursing practice. Previous APN research has primarily addressed comparative characteristics of education globally and several aspects related to practice after graduation. This study aimed to explore how higher education institutions position and legitimize APN as an education requisite for nurses, the health care system, and society. Program descriptions of relevant educational programs in the Norwegian context were analyzed using documentary reality construction. The findings point to how APNs are positioned to have a prominent contextual perspective, which are given precedence over direct patient care, legitimized through descriptions of societal problems and demands. This paper argues that APNs are positioned to hold individual responsibility to solve unmet societal demands.

Introduction: Aspiration pneumonia (AP) is an infection of the lungs caused by inhalation of material. The reported incidences vary across literature and clinical populations and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Management of AP is best carried out by a multidisciplinary team. Methods: This aim of this review was to collate and describe the available evidence on AP to develop a greater understanding of the concept of AP as it is represented in the nursing literature. As a collaborative team, we undertook the six stages of a systematic mapping review. We searched for the term aspiration pneumonia in 200 peer reviewed nursing journals across 10 databases, over a ten-year period (2013-2023). Results: In this review, 293 papers were coded. Dysphagia, oral health and tube feeding emerged as the most frequent risk factors for AP, and the most reported factors for preventing this condition. Mortality was the most commonly described consequence of AP, followed by hospitalisations and morbidity. Multiple management approaches were reported including dysphagia assessment, risk evaluation, oral care and texture modification of food and fluids. The role of nurses and interprofessional collaborations were described. Discussion: Despite limited evidence related to the topic of AP in the nursing literature, the complexity of the causes, prevention, management and consequences of AP emerged. Certain factors, such as dysphagia, oral health, and tube feeding, were described under prevention, cause and management of AP. Collegiality is one of the fundamental values of the nursing profession. During the nursing history, collegiality has been described as part of a nurse's relationship with their peers and it influences the quality of care they provide and job satisfaction and commitment to their work. Despite earlier definitions, the concept of collegiality in nursing has remained unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify the concept of collegiality in the nursing profession, using Rodger's evolutionary concept analysis. We carried out electronic searches using the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SocINDEX, PsycINFO and Eric databases and manual searches of the reference lists of the selected papers. The searches were limited to peer-reviewed papers published in English language from the inception of database to November 2022. This identified 25 papers. Based on our analysis, the attributes of the concept of collegiality were achieving mutual goals together with equality, reciprocity, trusted advocacy, powerful self-regulation and engaged belongingness. Antecedents of the concept included existing professional group, connection between professionals and professional self-esteem. The consequences were strengthening nurses' professional status, job satisfaction and their ability to provide the best possible patient care. We found that nurses' collegiality was a value-based concept, with a unique character based on professional connections. The concept brought together ethical and pragmatic strategies to achieve the best possible results for the nursing profession. Provided knowledge can be applied for further development of the concept and applying it in clinical research and practice. The concept of nurses' collegiality should also be studied in the future because both the profession and their working environment are constantly changing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To describe the implementation of a trauma‐informed model of care in the Post COVID Respiratory Clinic of a large tertiary referral centre in NSW. Design: Discussion paper. Data Sources: Evidence gathered from a literature search (2008–2022) was used to develop a framework for management of patients presenting to this Post COVID Respiratory Clinic. This paper outlines the personal reflections of the clinic staff as they developed and implemented this framework. Ethical approval was obtained to report the data collected from patient reviews. Discussion: The literature highlights the high prevalence of trauma in patients following COVID‐19 infection, as well as the larger population both during and after the pandemic. This experience of trauma was observed in patients seen within the clinic, indicating a need for specialized care. In response, a trauma‐informed model of care was implemented. Conclusion: Reconceptualizing COVID‐19 as a 'collective trauma' can help healthcare workers understand the needs of post‐COVID patients and enable them to respond empathetically. A trauma‐informed model is complementary to this cohort as it specifically addresses vulnerable populations, many of whom have been further marginalized by the pandemic. Implications for Nursing and Patient Care: Frontline healthcare workers, particularly nurses, are well positioned to implement trauma‐informed care due to their high‐level of patient contact. Adequate allocation of resources and investment in staff is essential to ensure such care can be provided. Impact: The COVID‐19 pandemic has led to adverse physical and mental health outcomes for many.Trauma‐informed care is a way to promote reengagement with the healthcare system in this group.Post COVID patients globally may benefit from this approach, as it aims to build trust and independence.
