The crystal violet (CV) staining technique represents a prevalent approach for the development of latent fingerprints, especially on adhesive tape surfaces. Nevertheless, the technique necessitates intricate formulations to augment its performance. In this investigation, an optimized CV staining protocol was developed, characterized by the absence of residual dye on the target substrates and the capability of facilitating fingerprint visualization under ambient light conditions. Four donors, comprising two males and two females, deposited natural fingerprints on various substrates, including glass microscope slides, aluminum foil, and 115 g glossy coated paper, without any specific guidelines. Fingerprints developed using cyanoacrylate fuming served as benchmarks and were contrasted with those generated through alternative methods: CV, ardrox, rhodamine 6G, powdering, and the optimized CV staining protocol. The fingerprint development experiment was replicated at seven distinct time intervals, encompassing 1 day, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, resulting in a dataset of 420 fingerprints. The evaluation of fingerprint identifiability employed a scoring system established by the Home Office Centre for Applied Science and Technology. The results indicated that the optimized CV staining technique demonstrated superior performance, boasting a 92.9% rate of identifiable fingerprint development in contrast to other employed methodologies. Presence of copying pencils in heritage objects poses a significant challenge for conservators due to their proneness to fading, sensitivity to solvents and difficulties in differentiation from regular graphite pencils. In this paper a method of copying pencils identification by means of ATR—FTIR spectroscopy is used. A protocol for spectra processing and dimensionality reduction of spectral data by means of principal component analysis has been developed, allowing for pencil types differentiation and providing an easy to read visual representation of the collected data. We present a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensor coated with crystal violet/perfluorinated sulfonic acid (CV/Nafion) composite film for relative humidity (RH) monitoring. The composite film demonstrates the characteristics of an optical "humidity test paper" by exhibiting a color transition from yellow to green within a RH range of 10 % to 80 %. This color variation indicates its potential to effectively monitor RH levels in diverse environments. To achieve a quantitative RH sensing, we coat CV/Nafion composite film on an etched TFBG (ETFBG), where surrounding RH changes can be measured from spectral responses of ETFBG transmission. In experiments, the proposed the CV/Nafion-coated ETFBG sensor exhibits RH sensitivities of 0.068 dB/%RH and 3 pm/%RH for intensity change and wavelength shift measurements, respectively, within a relative humidity (RH) range of 10 % to 80 %. Additionally, based on intensity measurement, short response and recovery times of ∼4.4 and ∼4.6 s are estimated from a continuous RH monitoring. • The proposed sensor's color will change from yellow to green with the increasing of the RH. • The proposed sensor could be used for RH detection of liquids, gases, and solids. • High RH detection sensitivity of 0.068 dB/% RH was obtained. • The response and recovery times are 4.4 s and 4.6 s respectively. Analytical studies of ancient Chinese handmade papers and paper-based materials have long faced challenges, due to the need for high-quality, scientifically sound data that can lead to suitable diagnostic criteria. This study applies Herzberg staining, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to five Hetian Administration Banknotes (HABs), a particular type of regional banknotes issued by Ma Hu-shan (1910–1954), a Hui warlord, in southern Xinjiang between 1933 and 1937. The results shed important insights into the use of fiber and dyes on HABs, revealing how locally handmade Sangpi (bark of the mulberry tree, Morus alba L.) papers and imported synthetic dyes (Rhodamine B, Methyl Violet 2B, Direct Black 38, and presumably Sudan II) were combined to serve the needs of the regional economy in southern Xinjiang during the 1930s. We conclude the paper by tentatively proposing guidelines for applying low- and high-resolution analytical methods to understand the manufacture and use of ancient Chinese handmade papers and paper-based materials. In this paper, a NiAl-LDH with the characteristic structure of a hydrotalc-like compound was applied as a carrier in a two-step hydrothermal process, and a MnCdS/In2S3/NiAl-LDH composite material was successfully prepared by loading MnCdS and In2S3 on the flower spherical-like surface of NiAl-LDH. The combination of NiAl-LDH with In2S3 and MnCdS made the band gap smaller and the light absorption range larger, thus increasing the utilization rate of light. 50% MnCdS/In2S3/NiAl-LDH composites had the best photoinduced charge separation and highest surface enrichment of photogenerated electrons. In the degradation experiment of crystal violet (CV), 50% MnCdS/In2S3/NiAl-LDH composites showed superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency (>98.5%) under full spectrum light. Furthermore, the applicability and universality of photocatalysts were studied by observing the degradation of CV by MnCdS/In2S3/NiAl-LDH composites under different conditions. In addition, the composites showed excellent hydrogen production capacity in the photolysis of water, in which hydrogen production within 8 hours was about 7661.51 μmol g−1. By combining the results of active species capture experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and photoelectrochemical experiments, the possible mechanism of double S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysis among NiAl-LDH, In2S3 and MnCdS was inferred, which is one of the main reasons for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Concerned about water treatment, it is of great importance to present new approaches for improving photocatalytic activity. Since photocatalysis is ubiquitous in almost all chemical manufacturing processes, the development of photocatalytic systems carries significance for our environment. In this regard, three different amounts of covalent organic frameworks decorated with titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 /COF hybrids) in Alginate-Carboxymethyl cellulose (Alg-CMC) blend matrix were prepared under ultrasound irradiation, which Citric acid and Calcium chloride acted as two green cross-linkages. Based on the physio-chemical analyses of these bio-nanocomposite (bio-NC) beads, the Alg-CMC blend polymer appeared to be the best candidate for a disparity of TiO 2 /COF hybrids. Not only did COF aid to increase the distribution of TiO 2 nanoparticles, but it declined the bandgap energies. The resultant Alg-CMC/TiO 2 /COF (TiO 2 /COF = 15:6) bio-NC beads demonstrated efficient photodegradation activity towards Methyl violet (MV) under Ultraviolet light. The obtained results of scavenger studies indicated that superoxide radicals and electron agents played a major role in MV degradation. Cationic synthetic dyes are one of the hazards in aqueous solutions that can affect the health of humans and living organisms. In the current work, polyacrylamide (PAM)-g-gelatin hydrogel and modified PAM-g-gelatin hydrogel using activated carbon of Luffa cylindrica (ACL) and ACL/Mg-Fe LDH were applied to eliminate crystal violet (CV), a cationic dye, from water media. The hydrogels were synthesized using free radical polymerization approach, and the hydrogels were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TGA-DTG, BET, SEM, and EDX-Map. The surface area of ACL, ACL/Mg-Fe LDH, PAM-g-gelatin, PAM-g-gelatin/ACL, and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH were 99.71, 141.99, 0.74, 1.47, and 1.65 m 2 /g, respectively, which shows that the presence of ACL and ACL/Mg-Fe LDH improved the area of the hydrogels. The maximum abatement of CV using PAM-g-gelatin (92.81%), PAM-g-gelatin/ACL (95.71%), and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH (98.25%) was obtained at pH = 9, temperature 25 °C, 10 mg/L CV, 60 min time, and adsorber dose of 2 g/L (for PAM-g-gelatin) and 1.5 g/L (other samples). The value of thermodynamic factors confirmed that the abatement process is exothermic and spontaneous. The kinetics data followed the pseudo-second kinetic (PSO) model. The Langmuir isotherm model had a more remarkable ability to describe the equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption capacity for PAM-g-gelatin, PAM-g-gelatin/ACL, and PAM-g-gelatin/ACL/Mg-Fe LDH was determined 35.45, 39.865, and 44.952 mg/g, respectively. In this research, aluminum metal-organic framework encapsulated with poly (itaconic acid) grafted crosslinked chitosan composite sponge (Al-MOF@PIC) was prepared. SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD, and BET techniques were employed to thoroughly characterize the synthesized material and establish its structure and characteristics. The study discovered that the Al-MOF@PIC is an efficient way to remove dyes, which constitute a significant number of contaminants in industrial wastewater. Subsequently the adsorption of methyl violet 2B (MV-2B) dye, the surface area, pore size, and pore volume of the adsorbent decreased from 1860.68 m 2 /g, 1.62 nm, and 1.52 cc/g to 1426.45 m 2 /g, 1.11 nm, and 0.92 cc/g, individually. This modification suggested that a portion of the MV-2B dye had been removed by adsorption over the adsorbent's pores. The excellent adsorption capacity of the material was further confirmed by batch adsorption tests, which displayed a maximum adsorption capability of 646.76 mg/g for the elimination of MV-2B dye. The high adsorption energy of 26.8 kJ/mol designates that chemisorption is primarily responsible for MV-2B dye adsorption against the sponge adsorbent. The Al-MOF@PIC composite sponge demonstrated exceptional reusability over six cycles, demonstrating its strength and durability. The Al-MOF@PIC composite sponge successfully removes MV-2B from water by pore filling, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions, which are the key mechanisms behind the adsorption of the dye pollutant. In today's world, major pollutants, such as cationic dyes and heavy metals, pose a serious threat to human health and the environment. In this study, a novel adsorbent was created through the electrospinning of polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylic acid (PVA/PAA), incorporated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coated with polydopamine (PDA). The integration of hBN and PDA substantially enhanced the adsorption capacity of the PVA/PAA fibers, making them highly effective in adsorbing cationic dyes such as methylene blue and crystal violet, as well as cobalt (II) ions, from contaminated water. The adsorbents were assessed to understand how their adsorption behavior varies with pH, as well as to examine their adsorption kinetics and isotherms. The results indicate that the PVA/PAA-hBN@PDA adsorbent has maximum adsorption capacities of 1029.57 mg/g, 793.65 mg/g, and 62.46 mg/g for methylene blue, crystal violet, and cobalt (II) ions, respectively. This underscores the superior performance of the PVA/PAA-hBN@PDA adsorbent when compared to both the PVA/PAA and PVA/PAA-hBN adsorbents. The adsorption kinetics adhered to a pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption, whereas the Langmuir model implied a monolayer adsorption. In the study, a novel chitosan biopolymer and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL)-incorporated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite (Ch-IL@SPEEK) was prepared for adsorption of cationic crystal violet (CV) dye. The proposed composite was well characterized by several techniques. CV adsorption performance was examined via batch studies by varying various variables involving adsorbent dosage, contact time pH and temperature. The isotherm results were demonstrated the adsorption characters of the processes were Langmuirian. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 77.66 mg g -1 for the composite which was significantly higher than SPEEK (q max  = 45.36 mg g -1 ). The determined equilibrium time of the operated system was 360 min and the kinetic model was assessed as Elovich. At low pHs the protonated surface groups repelled the positively charged CV and the adsorption rate increased with increasing pH. The process is spontaneous and favorable as it proceeds via endothermic interactions. Furthermore, even at the end of 5 successful adsorption cycles, 77.86 % CV removal was obtained. Remarkable efficiencies were also achieved in the removal performance of different organic pollutants. Ionizing radiation (mainly including gamma ray and electron beam) technology provides a more efficient and ecological option for dye-containing wastewater treatment, which is supported by its successful achievements in industrial-scale applications. However, the degradation pathway of triphenylmethane dyes by radiation technology is still unclear. In this study, crystal violet (CV) was selected as representative cationic triphenylmethane dye, the decolorization and degradation performance by electron beam radiation technology was systematically evaluated. The results showed that CV can be efficiently decolorized and mineralized by radiation, and its degradation kinetics followed the first-order kinetic model. The effect of inorganic anions and chelating agents commonly existed in dye-containing wastewater on CV decolorization and total organic carbon (TOC) removal was explored. Quenching experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculation and high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis were employed to reveal CV decolorization and degradation mechanism and pathway, which mainly included N-demethylation, triphenylmethane chromophore cleavage, ring-opening of aromatic products and further oxidation to carboxylic acid, and mineralization to CO 2 and H 2 O. Additionally, electron beam radiation/PMS process was explored to decrease the absorbed dose required for decolorization and degradation, and the synergetic effect of radiation with PMS was elucidated. Purpose: To evaluate the value of calcofluor white in the diagnosis of invasive fungal disease (IFD)., Methods: A total of 84 patients with possible pulmonary fungal infection who underwent bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were included. All BALF specimens were subjected to Calcofluor white (CFW), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and Gram stains., Results: CFW has the most sensitivity than KOH and Gram staining. The specificity of CFW was 92.00 %, which was lower than that of Gram staining. The PPVs for CFW, KOH and Gram staining were 94.44 %, 84.62 % and 80.00 % respectively. The NPVs for CFW, KOH and Gram staining was 47.92 %, 32.39 % and 30.38 % respectively. In this study, a highly sensitive and quick electrochemical platform based on poly (crystal violet) film and copper oxide nanoparticles for the detection of brilliant blue FCF from various soft beverages was developed. The synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles were investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray. Further, crystal violet was electropolymerized on the surface of the carbon paste electrode modified with copper oxide nanoparticles. The electrochemical properties of poly (crystal) violet/copper oxide nanoparticles modified carbon paste electrode were assessed through the utilization of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Furthermore, the signal towards the oxidation of brilliant blue was examined using the differential pulse voltammetry method. Under ideal experimental conditions, the peak current exhibited a linear relationship with the brilliant blue concentration within the range of 0.01-1.00 nmol/L, with a sensitivity of 294.55 µA nmol/L cm -2 and a significant detection limit of 3 pmol/L. In the presence of other dyes and other food additives, the developed platform showed greater selectivity in detecting brilliant blue. Unchecked dye effluent discharge poses escalating environmental and economic concerns, especially in developing nations. While dyes are well-recognized water pollutants, the mechanisms of their environmental spread are least understood. Therefore, the present study examines the partitioning of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) and Crystal Violet (CV) dyes using water-sediment microcosms and reports that native microbes significantly affect AO7 decolorization and transfer. Both dyes transition from infused to pristine matrices, reaching equilibrium in a fortnight. While microbes influence CV partitioning, their role in decolorization is minimal, emphasizing their varied impact on the environmental fate of dyes. Metagenomic analyses reveal contrasting microbial composition between control and AO7-infused samples. Control water samples displayed a dominance of Proteobacteria (62%), Firmicutes (24%), and Bacteroidetes (9%). However, AO7 exposure led to Proteobacteria reducing to 57% and Bacteroidetes to 3%, with Firmicutes increasing to 34%. Sediment samples, primarily comprising Firmicutes (47%) and Proteobacteria (39%), shifted post-AO7 exposure: Proteobacteria increased to 53%, and Firmicutes dropped to 38%. At the genus level, water samples dominated by Niveispirillum (34%) declined after AO7 exposure, while Bacillus and Pseudomonas increased. Notably, Serratia and Sphingomonas, known for azo dye degradation, rose post-exposure, hinting at their role in AO7 decolorization. Conversely, sediment samples showed a decrease in the growth of Bacillus and an increase in that of Pseudomonas and Serratia. In the former section of the present paper, the prospective application of B. mojavensis BI2 derived lipopeptides for dyes biodecolorization was demonstrated. The lipopeptide was mainly composed of linear and cyclic Fengycin and Surfactin isoforms. When using 100 mg/L, we are able to remove about 98% of 100 and 200 mg/L Malachite Green (MG). For the Crystal Violet (CV), the % of biodecolorization does not exceed 85% in the presence of 100 and 400 mg/L BI2 lipopeptide. In the second part of the paper, we proved the efficiency of dyes biosorption by palm waste floor, optimized by a Taguichi design. The bio-treatment efficiency was evaluated by color removal and the enhancement of germination index. Optimum treatments were obtained with 10 g/L and 6 g/L palm waste for 200 mg/L MG and CV respectively during 1 hour. This study presents a novel method for fabricating an efficient adsorbent sheet for wastewater treatment. The sheets are fabricated by combining sugarcane bagasse pulp as a scaffold with commercial, naturally activated carbon, and bimetallic‐prepared adsorbents. Sugarcane bagasse is utilized in producing activated carbon because of its high carbon contents, availability, and low cost. The prepared composite sheets are synthesized and investigated for pollutants removal of crystal violet (CV), methyl orange (MO), and Chromium (CI) dyes. Different weight ratios of activated carbon are used to form a bio‐composite mixed sheet. The formed sheets' morphology is performed via a high scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). To determine the adsorption mechanism, the intra‐particle diffuse screening experiment is used to test the experimental data. All the prepared sheets can retain the pollutants, with the best removal efficiency of 98% for methyl orange adsorption onto the bio‐composite mixed sheet. The results of the parameter (time, concentration, and dose) sets provided valuable proof that the adsorption of methyl orange onto the bio‐composite sheet mixed with naturally activated carbon is an endothermic phenomenon involving physical adsorption. The present paper focused on synthesizing a polyacrylamide-titanium dioxide (PAA@TiO2) nanocomposite using a cross-linking method with N, N′-methylenebisacrylamide and then using this composite to eliminate crystal violet (CV) dye from water and to characterize the adsorbent by XRD, FT-IR, and SEM-EDX techniques. The characterization revealed that TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed homogeneously within the polymer matrix. The maximum amount of adsorption was about 38.9 mg g−1 under the adsorbent dose of 5 g L−1, 500 mg L−1 CV dye concentration, and pH 6.9. The interaction between the CV molecule and the PAA@TiO2 nanocomposite surface was studied using Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The negative value of the Eads (− 586.56 kcal mol−1) of the CV molecules onto the PAA@TiO2 nanocomposite surface gives credibility to the experimental results. This paper's purpose was to evaluate the interaction between three imidazole derivatives, (2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methanol (SAM3), 1,1′-methanediylbis(1H-benzimidazole (AM5) and (1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methanol 1-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole (SAM5) on the one hand, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the other, as antifungal combinations against Candida spp. Inhibitory activity was assessed using the agar diffusion method and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and showed moderate inhibitory activity of single imidazole derivatives against Candida spp. The mean value of MIC ranged from 200 µg/mL (SAM3) to 312.5 µg/mL (SAM3), while for SDS the MIC was around 1000 µg/mL. When used in combination with SDS, the imidazole derivatives demonstrated an improvement in their antifungal activity. Their MIC decreased over five times for AM5 and over seven times for SAM3 and SAM5, respectively, and ranged from 26.56 µg/mL (SAM3) to 53.90 µg/mL (AM5). Most combinations displayed an additive effect while a clear synergistic effect was recorded in only a few cases. Thus, the FIC Index (FICI) with values between 0.311 and 0.375 showed a synergistic effect against Candida spp. when SDS was associated with SAM3 (three strains), SAM5 (two strains) and AM5 (one strain). The association of imidazole derivatives with SDS led to the increased release of cellular material as well as the intracellular influx of crystal violet (CV), which indicated an alteration of the membrane permeability of Candida spp. cells. In this study, we report the efficient removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions using a newly synthesized pyrene-appended Zn(II)-based metal–organic framework (MOF), ZnSiF6Pyrene MOF, with the chemical formula C52H32F6N4SiZn·4(CHCl3). The MOF was synthesized through a facile method at room temperature using a dipyridylpyrene ligand and ZnSiF6 metal source, resulting in a highly crystalline structure with pyrene functional groups forming the framework. The synthesized MOF was characterized using various analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal stability was assessed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), while the surface area of the MOF was determined using a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface analyzer. Furthermore, the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) structure was studied to authenticate its solid-state structure. The as-synthesized MOF exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity towards various organic dyes, including Congo red (CR), rhodamine B (RhB), and methyl violet (MV), due to its ample surface area and strong π–π interactions between the pyrene moieties and dye molecules, as demonstrated by experimental and in silico docking studies. The photocatalytic degradation of MV dye was also investigated. Detailed trapping tests indicate that hydroxyl (˙OH) and superoxide (O2˙−) radicals are likely the primary active species responsible for the photodegradation of the dye under study. Furthermore, the photocatalytic property of the MOF was investigated under visible light irradiation, demonstrating excellent ability to generate singlet oxygen. The fabrication of cross-linked 1,10-diaminodecane-poly methyl methacrylate/carbon nanotubes/graphene nanocomposites PMMA/CNTs/GNP(a–c) has been executed effectively using a multistep chemical cross-linking reaction. The environmental response of the fabricated material has been extensively investigated. The synthesized PMMA@CNTs/GNP nanocomposite effectively removed crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) from the simulated textile wastewater solution. The comprehensive delineation of the prepared nanocomposite was examined using SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and FTIR analysis. The outcomes revealed that adsorption capacity was influenced by six variables (e.g., contact duration, starting concentration, adsorbent mass, the effect of the solution pH, temperature, and the impact of KNO3). Additionally, studies on thermodynamics and isotherm have been published. The elimination process involves chemical adsorption based on the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. This model predicted that the maximal adsorption capacities of the MB and CV dyes would be 20.83 and 22.42 mg g−1, respectively, best fitting the experimental results. Metal organic framework (MOF) materials have attracted widespread interests because of their potential application prospects in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, a cobalt-based MOF Co3-btca was developed as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of organic dye pollutants in water by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Detailed characterizations showcased that the as-prepared nitrogen-rich Co-MOF Co3-btca possessed micron size and good stability. In the presence of both Co3-btca and PMS, the methyl violet (MV) degradation rate reached 99.78% within 9 min, while the rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate reached 99.58% within 15 min. The effect of dye concentrations, reaction temperature, PMS and catalyst dosages on degradation reactions was studied. More importantly, successive degradation experiments demonstrated that the as-prepared Co3-btca catalyst possessed good stability with easy recycling for eliminating organic contaminants from wastewater. Radical trapping measurements confirmed that SO4−˙ and ˙OH radicals were the main active species for the removal of organic dyes. Moreover, we speculated the possible degradation mechanism of organic dyes. In this paper, the novel ECL sensor of the 6‐methoxychromone (6‐MC)/S2O82− system was designed by using 2‐naphthalene sulfonic acid (2‐NSA) as a co‐reaction accelerator. Fluorescence, ECL spectrum, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to explore extensively the ECL mechanism of the system. It is worth pointing out that 2‐naphthalene sulfonic acid (2‐NSA) was first proposed as a co‐reaction accelerator, reacting with the coreactant K2S2O8 rather than the luminophore, promoting the generation of additional oxidant SO4− from S2O82−, thus amplifying the ECL signal. Furthermore, under the optimal experimental conditions, the high sensitivity of the 2‐naphthalene sulfonic acid (2‐NSA)+6‐methoxychromone (6‐MC)/S2O82− system was realized for the detection of methyl violet (MV) in the linear range of 10−8~10−2 M, with a detection limit of 5.14×10−10 M. Developing synthetic strategies for smart materials for the adsorption and separation of toxic chemicals is of great importance. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proven to be outstanding adsorbent materials that possess excellent pollutant removal performances in wastewater treatment, including dye recycling. In this work, a neutral Cd(II) based 2D framework with a dual ligand strategy involving –OH functionalized 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (5-OH-H2IPA) and the amide decorated Schiff base ligand (E)-N′-(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)isonicotinohydrazide (L) has been synthesized by different synthetic routes and characterized by various analytical methods. Thus, crystals of {[Cd(5-OH-IPA)(L)]·CH3OH}n synthesized via diffusion (ADES-7D) and the phase pure bulk product synthesized by conventional reflux (ADES-7C) and the mechanochemical grinding method (ADES-7M) have been established using PXRD data of the respective product showing identical simulated SXRD data to those of ADES-7D. The mechanochemically synthesized ADES-7M possesses a better surface area and CO2 adsorption capability compared to ADES-7C, which is also supported by electron microscopy and particle size measurements. Furthermore, ADES-7 can be used as an efficient adsorbent material for the reversible, selective adsorption (42–99%) and separation of the cationic dyes malachite green (MG), methyl violet (MV), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB) from the mixture of cationic/anionic dyes (methyl orange (MO) and bromocresol green (BCG)) in the aqueous phase. Specifically, ADES-7M possesses better dye capture capability compared to ADES-7C, even in the case of the bigger dye RhB with adsorption differences of 2.38 to 1.01 mg g−1, respectively. The dye adsorption kinetics follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the dye adsorption isotherm fits well with the Langmuir/Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Silver chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) are potential nanosensors for biological and environmental applications. These QDs present low toxicity and their narrow band gap makes them promising as near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) probes, exhibiting images with higher penetrability. In addition, hydrophilicity is essential for applications in biological systems as well as detection in aqueous media. Using the same methodology, variations in synthesis conditions can alter the efficiency and performance of their intrinsic properties. Most studies seek the best conditions for each experimental variable in a univariate manner; however, multivariate strategies are a faster and more economical way to achieve this goal. Thus, in this work, we utilized chemometric approaches to enhance the NIR-II PL properties of Ag2Se QDs stabilized with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). Three experimental designs were used, totaling 58 syntheses, showing that the Ag2Se–MPA QDs, obtained under the conditions of [Ag+] of 2.5 mmol L−1, Ag : Se molar ratio of 8 : 1, MPA : Ag molar ratio of 6 : 1, heating at 70 °C, pH 10, and 180 min, presented the best emission profile with a maximum at 1070 nm and a FWHM of approximately 140 nm. The nanocrystals presented an average diameter of 6 nm and the orthorhombic crystalline phase. Preliminary surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy assays were carried out for the detection of methyl violet 2B (MV) dye using these QDs. The enhancement factor obtained was higher than 3.5, which is comparable to those observed for other systems, namely Ag2Se-MSA QDs. Zinc metal–organic frameworks (Zn-MOFs) of phthalic acid (ZnPA) and nitro-phthalic acid (ZnNPA) microcrystalline particles were fabricated and utilized for the removal of organic cationic dyes (crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB)) from water. PXRD studies confirmed the formation of crystalline materials, and BET indicated the mesoporous structure. HR-SEM studies showed the rod and plate morphologies for ZnPA and ZnNPA, respectively. ZnPA revealed low adsorption of dyes (CV, 20%) whereas ZnNPA showed significantly enhanced dye adsorption (CV, 99%). In particular, ZnNPA exhibited higher adsorption of CV (99%) and MB dye (83%) compared to RhB (54%). Nevertheless, ZnNPA could not be reused due to strong adsorption of dyes. Hence, a natural binder was introduced by dipping ZnNPA into tea extract, which also showed high adsorption of CV and MB dyes. Kinetics of adsorption exhibited best fitting with the pseudo-second-order model, indicating strong interactions between the dyes and adsorbent. Adsorption isotherm fitting suggested a good correlation coefficient (R2) with the Freundlich model, suggesting multi-layer adsorption. Interestingly, ZnNPA showed high adsorption of CV and MB dyes across the pH range between 3.0 and 11.0. The binder-introduced ZnNPA adsorbent was easily regenerated and demonstrated three cycles of reusability without significant change in the dye adsorption. Three-dimensional iodoargentate hybrids [Co(en)3(Ag2I4)]n (1), [Fe(en)3(Ag2I4)]n (2) (en = ethylenediamine) and [Co(dien)2(Ag2I4)]n·nH2O (3) (dien = diethylenetriamine) were prepared in C2H5OH solvent via a one-step reaction under solvothermal conditions. In compounds 1 and 2, AgI4 tetrahedra were interlinked via corner-sharing to form a 3D α-Ag2I4 framework with interpenetrated channels with cross sectional dimensions of 8.071 Å × 9.039 Å and 9.039 Å × 9.039 Å. The AgI4 tetrahedra in compound 3 were connected via both corner- and edge-sharing into a 3D β-Ag2I4 framework with dimensions of 5.929 Å × 8.329 Å, and 8.329 Å × 9.910 Å. Compounds 1–3 showed sensitive photocurrent response under visible light irradiation with steady current densities in the range of 3.46–8.26 μA cm−2. These compounds were catalytically active during the photodegradation of crystal violet (CV), with degradation conversions of 72.2%, 91.5% and 80.1% after 105 min of light irradiation over compounds 1–3, respectively. Recently, transparent and flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have received great interest for direct point-of-care detection of analytes on irregular nonplanar surfaces. In this study, we proposed a simple cost-effective strategy to develop a flexible SERS patch utilizing multibranched sharp spiked gold nanostars (GNS) decorated on a commercially available adhesive Scotch Tape for achieving ultra-high SERS sensitivity. The experimental SERS measurements were correlated with theoretical finite element modeling (FEM), which indicates that the GNS having a 2.5 nm branch tip diameter (GNS-4) exhibits the strongest SERS enhancement. Using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a model analyte, the SERS performance of the flexible SERS patch exhibited a minimum detection limit of R6G as low as 1 pM. The enhancement factor of the SERS patch with GNS-4 was calculated as 6.2 × 108, which indicates that our flexible SERS substrate has the potential to achieve ultra-high sensitivity. The reproducibility was tested with 30 different spots showing a relative standard deviation (RSD) of SERS intensity of about 5.4%, indicating good reproducibility of the SERS platform. To illustrate the usefulness of the flexible SERS sensor patch, we investigated the detection of a carcinogenic compound crystal violet (CV) on fish scales, which is often used as an effective antifungal agent in the aquaculture industry. The results realized the trace detection of CV with the minimum detection limit as low as 1 pM. We believe that our transparent, and flexible SERS patch based on GNS-4 has potential as a versatile, low-cost platform for real-world SERS sensing applications on nonplanar surfaces. Harnessing solar energy using semiconductor-based materials to generate charge pairs to effectively drive photo-redox reactions has been envisioned as a promising approach toward a sustainable future. In this arena, the metal sulfide nanoparticles have demonstrated excellent performance in photomineralizing colored matter. However, their small surface area and relatively slow charge transfer has limited their practical applications. Therefore, for the effective mineralization of colored matter, we devise and construct the Sn2S3–In2S3 S-scheme in collaboration with 2D graphene oxide nanosheets. The material offers a well-defined nanosheet and nanoflake morphology for the effective contact with and catalysis of crystal violet (CV) dye as a model contaminant. Compared to Sn2S3–In2S3/GO, the pristine Sn2S3 and Sn2S3–In2S3 cause negligible degradation of CV using a visible-light source. This enhanced photocatalysis is supported by the peculiar properties of GO, such as its high surface area, electron-shuttling performance, and ability to prevent charge back-recombination. Under simulated conditions, more than 99% of CV was mineralized within 60 min of contact time. The photodegradation follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant (Kt) = 0.02317 min−1. Furthermore, the photo mineralization of CV dye was thoroughly investigated using the GC-MS technique. Highly efficient and low-cost materials for the degradation of organic dyes in wastewater remain the focus of environmental protection and water pollution control, in which, nanozymes have been at the forefront for the development of a new platform and aroused more and more attention. In this work, a nanoceria@shaddock peel-derived nanocomposite (Ce@CSP) with excellent peroxidase-like performance in methyl violet (MV) degradation as well as ascorbic acid (AA) detection was synthesized by a simple one step in situ pyrolysis of cerium ammonium nitrate (Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6) and pretreated shaddock peel. By means of the cooperative-reinforcing peroxidase-like activity of the porous carbon material originating from shaddock peel (CSP) and the loaded CeO2 nanoparticle, the obtained nanozyme Ce@CSP displayed a superior catalytic ability in the catalyzed oxidation of the chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2. Specifically, a synergetic absorbent property was also demonstrated by the porous carbon material, bringing the target molecules in close proximity to the nanozyme catalyst and therefore enabling effective decoloration of MV and colorimetric detection of AA with a linear range of 1.6–17.3 μM and a detection limit of 1.07 μM. The current work has realized effective decoloration of MV in real water samples and provided a wide range of potential applications of low-cost and eco-friendly materials in organic dye treatment. Herein, magnesium–aluminum layered double hydroxides (Mg–Al-LDH) were synthesized by an environmentally friendly and economically promising hydrothermal technique for the adsorption of the dye reactive green 5 (RG5). To further enhance the RG5 dye adsorption capability of Mg–Al-LDH, their composites were designed by using low-cost Mangifera indica stone biomass (MISB). From their physiochemical properties evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, they were found to display an irregular morphology along with the existence of various functional groups (including OH, C＝O, and C–H) on surfaces, enabling prepared biosorbents to be excellent candidates for adsorption. Batch adsorption trials were conducted to determine the comparative RG5 dye adsorption efficiencies of MISB, Mg–Al-LDH and the Mg–Al-LDH@MISB composite in an aqueous medium. The highest RG5 dye adsorption capacities recorded under optimized conditions (contact time: 90 min, pH: 3, adsorbent dosage: 0.05 g, initial RG5 dye concentration: 80 mg L−1 and temperature: 30 °C) for MISB, Mg–Al-LDH and the Mg–Al-LDH@MISB composite were 55.9 mg g−1, 68.4 mg g−1 and 73.5 mg g−1, respectively. The kinetic and isothermal study showed the best fit of the pseudo 2nd order and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic parameters illustrated the spontaneity of the process. In addition, the adsorbents as designed also possessed regeneration capability as evidenced by their RG5 dye desorption potential. Therefore, this research opens up new doors for the development of environmentally friendly Mg–Al-LDH by developing composites with economically feasible biomass for industrial wastewater treatment. Water released by industries that generate coloured pollutants must be treated to safeguard the environment and ensure that the treated water is non-toxic. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of glycine-derived designer micelles, N-lauroyl-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)glycine (PyN12G), as a capping agent to prepare black bismuth oxide nanoparticles (Bi2O3 NPs). The obtained Bi2O3 NPs were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the Bi2O3 NPs are crystalline, with a quasi-spherical morphology and an average size of 42.3 nm, which are further corroborated by powder X-ray diffraction studies to be monoclinic. Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that the surface of Bi2O3 NPs was stabilized by PyN12G and that the –COOH group of the micelles was involved in surface functionalization. The application of Bi2O3 NPs in environmental remediation was demonstrated by degrading a toxic dye, Congo red (CR). Bi2O3 NPs catalyze sodium borohydride-mediated CR degradation with an efficiency of 88.8% in 15 minutes and a rate constant of 1.92 × 10−3 s−1. Besides CR, Bi2O3 NPs catalyzed the degradation of methylene blue, bromophenol blue, Coomassie blue, crystal violet, and rhodamine B with efficiencies of 95%, 92%, 95%, 90%, and 86%, respectively. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis reveals that CR is degraded into smaller molecules. The disclosed dye degradation process eliminates the hazardous feature of the dye, which was proven by the seed germination assay. Furthermore, toxicology experiments revealed that Bi2O3 NPs do not affect bacterial growth or seed germination, proving that the NPs are non-toxic and safe to use as a chemocatalyst to eliminate toxic dyes without affecting the environment. Statistics can be used in a variety of ways to present, compute, and critically analyze experimental data. To determine the significance and validity of the experimental data, a variety of statistical tests are used. Using a synthesized CoO/NiO/MnO 2 Nanocomposite, the present study used adsorption to remove the dye Bromophenol Blue (BPB) from a contaminated aqueous solution. In order to (a) determine the optimal pH of the solution, (b) confirm the experiment's success, and (c) investigate the effect of adsorbent dose on BPB dye removal from aqueous solutions. The experimental data were statistically analyzed through hypothesis testing using the t -test, paired t -test, and Chi-square test. The thermal stability of gun propellants is related to significant safety issues in their development, production, storage, or transportation. Therefore, the study of improving the thermal stability of propellants has urgent and important practical significance. In this work, glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) with a relative molecular weight of 330 was added to the gun propellant to prepare modified NG-NC-RDX gun propellants containing different contents of oligomeric GAP. The ability of the propellant to cause discoloration of methyl violet test paper due to thermal decomposition, as well as the thermal weight loss and adiabatic decomposition behavior of the propellant, were characterized. And the differential charge density of GAP and NG, as well as the free volume and microstructure of GAP/NC and NG/NC blends, were compared, and the mechanism by which GAP improves the thermal stability of the propellant was discussed. When the content of GAP in the propellant changes from 0% to 16%, the time for the methyl violet test paper to change from purple to orange is prolonged from 87 minutes to 98 minutes. The initial decomposition temperature of thermal weight loss increased from 164.7 °C to 176.4 °C. The maximum temperature rise rate during adiabatic decomposition decreased from 0.95 °C·min−1 to 0.12 °C·min−1. According to MS simulation calculations, GAP provides a larger free volume and improves the uniformity of the mesoscopic phase structure of the propellant. The covalent effect of bond C-N 3 in GAP molecules is stronger than that of bond O-NO 2 in NG molecules. The thermal stability of the NG-NC-RDX propellant increases with the addition of GAP, and it increases with the increase of GAP content in the propellant. This paper describes the development of 3D-printed dosimeters made from radiochromic materials. Incorporating polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a transparent polymer matrix and leuco-crystal violet as a radiochromic dye, these dosimeters exhibit a color change when exposed to radiation. This change provides a way to visualize and measure three-dimensional dose distributions, which is important for the accurate verification of radiation doses in radiotherapy. The use of 3D printing technology allows these dosimeters to approximate human organ geometries, which may contribute to safer and more effective radiotherapeutic applications. The dosimeters can be customized into various shapes and sizes, are lightweight, and cost-effective, making them appropriate for use in both clinical and research settings in radiotherapy. The fabrication process is detailed, and the dosimeters have been tested at doses up to 100 Gy in X-ray irradiation and analyzed for dose distribution. Bragg-peak measurements from carbon beam irradiation illustrate the dosimeters' capability to detect peak radiation doses with a spatial resolution of approximately 1 mm. This paper presents a highly-ordered metallic nanotube array (MeNTA) coated with graphene oxide (GO) to serve as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The MeNTA was fabricated using a top-down wafer-scale lithographic and sputter-deposition process, after which a thin layer of GO was deposited uniformly via dip coating. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that GO dip coating did not mar the highly ordered periodic structures on the MeNTA substrate. Raman scattering spectra of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules revealed that coating MeNTA substrates with GO enhanced peak intensity by as much as 2.9 times. Among the substrates examined in this study, the Ag GO MeNTA presented the strongest SERS behavior, with a detection limit of 10−8 M and enhancement factors of 5.38 × 105 for R6G and 2.23 × 105 for Crystal Violet (CV). Currently, water pollution caused by dyes is a serious problem since they are toxic and carcinogenic to living beings. To reduce the presence of these contaminants, natural adsorbents have been considered as they are easy to obtain, inexpensive, and have high removal efficiency. In this work, the adsorption process using natural brushite (nDCPD) was studied for the removal of phenol red (PR), achieving a removal rate of 99.15% and an adsorption capacity of 82.24 mg/g, and gentian violet (GV), achieving a removal rate of 97.03% and an adsorption capacity of 74.22 mg/g. Equilibrium adsorption occurs for both dyes in multiple layers on the surface. The adsorption process is spontaneous for both dyes. The kinetics of the adsorption process involve using a single active site on the surface for PR adsorption, while for GV, two active sites on the surface are required. Analysis via FTIR, EDS, and XRD revealed various mechanisms that intervene in the adsorption process of both dyes on the surface of nDCPD, such as electrostatic forces, functional groups, physisorption, and ion exchange. The use of magnetic nanomaterials (MNPs) as adsorbents to eliminate pollution causing dyes from water has attracted substantial attention in recent years because they can be easily isolated and reused. In this work, core–shell Fe3O4@SiO2 MNPs in which magnetic Fe3O4 NPs as a core enclosed with a thick SiO2 shell were successfully synthesized by chemical co–precipitation followed by hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes in a mixture of ammonia, ethanol and water. The formation of core–shell Fe3O4@SiO2 MNPs has been characterized by TEM, TEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR and VSM. TEM characterization revealed that several Fe3O4 NPs (around 10 nm) aggregated to form a Fe3O4 magnetic core and surrounded by an uniform SiO2 shell of 40-50 nm thickness to obtain Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic core–shell NPs. As synthesized core–shell NPs were employed as adsorbent for elimination of two cationic toxic dyes, crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. Further, different adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and contact times of the dyes were found to enhance the adsorption of cationic dyes. At neutral pH 7 the cationic dyes could be speedily removed from aqueous solution with high efficiency. It has been observed that 0.35 g of adsorbent dosage is sufficient for 95% of dye removal efficiency. The contact time is optimised for 20 min for both the dyes. The Langmuir model adsorption isotherm is best suitable which indicates that the cationic dyes adsorption behaviour of Fe3O4@SiO2 is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. The adsorptive binding of CV/MG with Fe3O4@SiO2 was directed through electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily reused and regenerated with almost no adsorption capability is significantly reduced up to 5 cycles. The textile industry's waste often contains excessive amounts of crystal violet (CV), leading to environmental concerns. Graphene oxide has been studied as a promising adsorbent for removing crystal violet, a cationic dye, from aqueous solutions. The study involved a comprehensive analysis of various experimental parameters, including initial concentration, pH, adsorbent mass, contact time, and temperature. Graphene oxide underwent thorough analysis using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and specific surface area determination via the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. Energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS) was also employed. This study aimed to optimize the synthesis yield of graphene oxide from graphite using the Hummers method and response surface methodology (RSM), achieving a yield of 106.14% with 5 g of KMnO4 and 1 g of NaNO3 for 8 hours. The graphene oxide was analyzed via FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, pHpzc, and EDS. Optimal conditions for maximal adsorption included 0.016 g of graphene oxide, 18 minutes of contact time, pH 10, and a temperature of 25°C, resulting in a 97.38% reduction in crystal violet with a monolayer adsorption capacity of 470.78 mg/g. Kinetic data were best fitted by the pseudosecond‐order model, and the Langmuir isotherm accurately depicted adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis indicated spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and exothermic (ΔH° < 0) crystal violet adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) explored interactions between graphene oxide and crystal violet, supporting experimental findings and confirming graphene oxide's efficacy as an adsorbent for crystal violet removal from aqueous solutions. Background: Biofilm formation is an essential virulence factor that creates a highly protected growth mode for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) to survive in any hostile environment. Antibiotic sub-minimal inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC) may modulate the biofilm formation ability of bacterial pathogens, thereby affecting bacterial pathogenesis and infection outcomes. Intense antimicrobial therapy to treat biofilm-associated infections can control the pathogenic infection aggravation but cannot guarantee its complete eradication. Objective: This study aimed to assess the sub-MICs effect of 5 different antimicrobial classes on biofilm-forming capacity among Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates using three different biofilm quantitation techniques. Methods: In this study, the effects of 5 different antimicrobial agents, namely, azithromycin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, and imipenem, at sub-MICs of 12.5%, 25%, and 50% were tested on 5 different clinical isolates of S. aureus. The biofilms formed in the absence and presence of different antimicrobial sub-MICs were then assessed using the following three different techniques: the crystal violet (CV) staining method, the quantitative PCR (qPCR) method, and the spread plate method (SPM). Results: Biofilm formation was significantly induced in 64% of the tested conditions using the CV technique. On the other hand, the qPCR quantifying the total bacterial count and the SPM quantifying the viable bacterial count showed significant induction only in 24% and 17.3%, respectively (Fig. 1). The difference between CV and the other techniques indicates an increase in biofilm biomass without an increase in bacterial growth. As expected, sub-MICs did not reduce the viable cell count, as shown by the SPM. The CV staining method revealed that sub-MICs of imipenem and ciprofloxacin had the highest significance rate (80%) showing an inductive effect on the biofilm development. On the other hand, doxycycline, azithromycin, and gentamicin displayed lower significance rates of 73%, 53%, and 47%, respectively. Conclusion: Exposure to sub-MIC doses of antimicrobial agents induces the biofilm-forming capacity of S. aureus via increasing the total biomass without significantly affecting the bacterial growth of viable count. Crystal violet dye poses significant health risks to humans, including carcinogenic and mutagenic effects, as well as environmental hazards due to its persistence and toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. This study focuses on the efficient removal of crystal violet dye from aqueous media using novel Co3O4/Co3(BO3)2 nanostructures synthesized via the Pechini sol–gel approach. The nanostructures, which were abbreviated to EN600 and EN800, were fabricated at calcination temperatures of 600 and 800 °C, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the synthesized samples have a cubic Co3O4 phase and an orthorhombic Co3(BO3)2 phase, with mean crystal sizes of 43.82 nm and 52.93 nm for EN600 and EN800 samples, respectively. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas of EN600 and EN800 samples were 65.80 and 43.76 m2/g, respectively, indicating a significant surface area available for adsorption. Optimal removal of crystal violet dye was achieved at a temperature of 298 K, a contact time of 70 min, and a pH of 10. The maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 284.09 mg/g for EN600 and 256.41 mg/g for EN800, which are notably higher compared to many conventional adsorbents. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption was exothermic, spontaneous, and physical in nature. Moreover, the adsorbents exhibited excellent reusability, retaining high efficiency after multiple regeneration cycles using 6 mol/L hydrochloric acid. Biofilm formation and toxin production are some of the virulence factors of Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile), which causes hospital-acquired C. difficile infection (HA-CDI). This work investigated the prevalence and distribution of different strains recovered from HA-CDI patients hospitalized in 4 medical centres across Israel, and characterized strains' virulence factors and antibiotic susceptibility. One-hundred and eighty-eight faecal samples were collected. C. difficile 's toxins were detected by the CerTest Clostridium difficile GDH + Toxin A + B combo card test kit. Toxin loci PaLoc and PaCdt were detected by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) was performed to classify strains. Biofilm production was assessed by crystal violet. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined using Etest. Fidaxomicin susceptibility was tested via agar dilution. Sequence type (ST) 42 was the most (13.8%) common strain. All strains harboured the 2 toxins genes; 6.9% had the binary toxin. Most isolates were susceptible to metronidazole (98.9%) and vancomycin (99.5%). Eleven (5.85%) isolates were fidaxomicin-resistant. Biofilm production capacity was associated with ST (p < 0.001). In conclusion, a broad variety of C. difficile strains circulate in Israel's medical centres. Further studies are needed to explore the differences and their contribution to HA-CDI epidemiology. Objective: The objective was to determine the in vitro antibacterial effect of the Oregano essential oil (OEO) on Streptococcus mutans (S mutans) and to explore the anti-biofilm effect and mechanism of OEO. Methods: The in vitro antibacterial susceptibility of OEO was detected by the growth curve and colony-forming unit (CFU) counting method. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and crystal violet assay were used to explore the anti-biofilm activity of OEO, and the anti-biofilm mechanism was explored from the aspects of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) synthesis, acidoid, and extracellular DNA changes. OEO was characterized using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer and cytotoxicity was tested using a cell counting Kit-8 assay. Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration of OEO was 0.25 mg/mL, and the CFU showed the ability of OEO to kill planktonic bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy and CLSM showed that OEO could hinder the development of biofilms, harm bacteria, and eliminate mature biofilms by changing EPS synthesis and pH value. Carvacrol in OEO played a major role in biological antibacterial activity. OEO had low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Conclusions: OEO had excellent antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects on the key virulence traits of S mutans, indicating potential prospects in preventing dental caries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During 2018–2021, eight septic transfusion reactions occurred from transfusion of platelet units contaminated with Acinetobacter spp., Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Leclercia adecarboxylata, or a combination of those environmental organisms. Whether biofilm formation contributed to evasion of bacterial risk mitigations, including bacterial culture, point-of-care testing, or pathogen-reduction technology, is unclear. We designed a 12-well plate-based method to evaluate environmental determinants of single-species and multispecies biofilm formation in platelets. We evaluated bacteria isolated from septic transfusion reactions for biofilm formation by using crystal violet staining and enumeration of adherent bacteria. Most combinations of bacteria had enhanced biofilm production compared with single bacteria. Combinations involving L. adecarboxylata had increased crystal violet biofilm production and adherent bacteria. This study demonstrates that transfusion-relevant bacteria can produce biofilms well together. More work is needed to clarify the effect of biofilms on platelet bacterial risk control strategies, but US Food and Drug Administration– recommended strategies remain acceptable. Utilising the solution combustion technique, nanocrystalline photocatalysts that included both pristine TiO2 and doped TiO2 with various La (III) dopant percentages (1, 3, 5, and 7 mol%) were created. Different methods, including thermal analysis, high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), were used to investigate the prepared nanostructures. The XRD results indicated the anatase form and the crystalline nature of the products (pristine and doped TiO2) in the size range of a crystallite (5–16.5) nm. The photocatalytic assessment of the prepared nano-photocatalysts was carried out by crystal violet (CV) decolourisation under ultraviolet (UV) light. The findings revealed that 3% La-TiO2 showed the highest degradation efficiency (95.98%) in 70 min with a pseudo-first-rate constant of k = 4.73 × 10−2 min−1, compared to pristine TiO2 and the other TiO2 nanostructures with various La (III) dopant ratios. A nanostructured material, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), was synthesised in metal- and halide-free form and its use for the sequestration of crystal violet, a hazardous triphenylmethane dye, is reported for the first time. The OMC material is characterised using scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy for chemical analysis, by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and by nitrogen gas physisorption. The ideal conditions for the uptake of crystal violet dye were determined in batch experiments covering the standard parameters: pH, concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. Experimental data are validated by applying Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherms. The thermodynamic parameters, ΔH°, ΔG°, and ΔS°, are calculated and it has been found that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic with increasing disorder. An in-depth analysis of the kinetics of the adsorption process, order of the reaction and corresponding values of the rate constants was performed. The adsorption of crystal violet over OMC has been found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics through a film diffusion process at all temperatures studied. Continuous flow column operations were performed using fixed bed adsorption. Parameters including percentage saturation of the OMC bed are evaluated. Zinc cobalt oxide-zinc hydroxide (ZnCo2O4-Zn(OH)2) microspheres were successfully fabricated on carbon cloth via a sample hydrothermal method. The surface morphology of these microspheres and their efficacy in degrading methyl violet were further modulated by varying the thermal annealing temperatures. Adjusting the thermal annealing temperatures was crucial for controlling the porosity of the ZnCo₂O₄-Zn(OH)₂ microspheres, enhancing their photocatalytic performance. Various analytical techniques were utilized to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of the ZnCo2O4-Zn(OH)2 microspheres, including field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Compared to untreated ZnCo2O4-Zn(OH)2 microspheres, those subjected to thermal annealing exhibited increased specific surface area and light absorption capacity, rendering them highly effective photocatalysts under UVC light exposure. Subsequent studies have confirmed the superior performance of ZnCo2O4-Zn(OH)2 microspheres as a reusable photocatalyst for degrading methyl violet and tetracycline. Furthermore, trapping experiments during the photodegradation process using ZnCo₂O₄-Zn(OH)₂ microspheres identified hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O₂⁻) as the primary reactive species. Acinetobacter baumannii emerged as one of the most important pathogens for the development of new antimicrobials due to the worldwide detection of isolates resistant to all commercial antibiotics, especially in nosocomial infections. Biofilm formation enhances A. baumannii survival by impairing antimicrobial action, being an important target for new antimicrobials. Fluopsin C (FlpC) is an organocupric secondary metabolite with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of FlpC in established biofilms of extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii (XDRAb) and the effects of its combination with polymyxin B (PolB) on planktonic cells. XDRAb susceptibility profiles were determined by Vitek 2 Compact, disk diffusion, and broth microdilution. FlpC and PolB interaction was assessed using the microdilution checkerboard method and time–kill kinetics. Biofilms of XDRAb characterization and removal by FlpC exposure were assessed by biomass staining with crystal violet. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy was used to determine the temporal removal of the biofilms using DAPI, and cell viability using live/dead staining. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of FlpC on XDRAb was 3.5 µg mL−1. Combining FlpC + PolB culminated in an additive effect, increasing bacterial susceptibility to both antibiotics. FlpC-treated 24 h biofilms reached a major biomass removal of 92.40 ± 3.38% (isolate 230) using 7.0 µg mL−1 FlpC. Biomass removal occurred significantly over time through the dispersion of the extracellular matrix and decreasing cell number and viability. This is the first report of FlpC's activity on XDRAb and the compound showed a promissory response on planktonic and sessile cells, making it a candidate for the development of a new antimicrobial product. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) using natural photosensitizers (curcumin, riboflavin, and phycocyanin) and light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation against multispecies biofilms in an acrylic denture base model. Materials and Methods: Forty-five acrylic specimens were fabricated using heat-curing acrylic resin. The specimens were then infected with a mixed culture of bacterial and fungal species (including Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, Candida albicans, and Candida glabrata) for 4 days. The acrylic discs were divided into nine groups, with each group containing five discs: control, 0.2% chlorhexidine, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, curcumin, riboflavin, phycocyanin alone or along with LED. After treatment, the number of colony-forming units (CFUs) per milliliter was counted. In addition, the extent of biofilm degradation was assessed using the crystal violet staining method and scanning electron microscopy. Results: All experimental groups exhibited a significant reduction in colony numbers for both bacterial and fungal species compared to the control (p < 0.001). The PDT groups exhibited a statistically significant reduction in colony counts for both bacteria and fungi compared to the photosensitizer-only groups. Conclusions: The results of this in vitro study show that PDT with natural photosensitizers and LED devices can effectively reduce the viability and eradicate the biofilm of microorganisms responsible for causing denture infections.
