Iron‐rich, ferruginous waters were the dominant geochemical regime for most of Earth's history. Modern ferruginous waters are found in stratified, sulfur‐poor lakes, and serve as crucial analogs for biogeochemical cycling throughout Earth's past. Here we present the first depth‐resolved data of physical structure, nutrients and trace elements from Lake Poso (Indonesia), a deep oligotrophic ancient lake. Lake Poso is ferruginous, with anoxia below ~ 90 m depth, placing it among the world's largest ferruginous lakes. Physical stratification is weaker than other tropical anoxic lakes, indicating sensitivity for paleoclimate reconstructions. Trace elements and nutrients are predominantly shaped by the oxic–anoxic transition. Manganese– and Fe oxyhydroxide–driven biogeochemical cycling occurs at distinct depth horizons, with Co and Ni controlled by Mn and showing shallow release in anoxic waters, while V, Cr, P, and As are controlled by Fe, with release in surface sediments and diffusive transport. Chromium is nonquantitatively removed in anoxic waters, in contrast to widespread assumptions in Cr‐based paleoreconstructions. Oxycline U and Se removal corresponds to a local N minimum, suggesting biological reduction and/or uptake. These first ferruginous water Se data also show removal in sediments, indicating sediment signals reflect multiple removal processes and informing Se‐based paleoreconstructions, while the absence of sediment U removal contrasts other anoxic basins. A comparison with other ferruginous lakes demonstrates how local influences drive deviations from expectations in other systems, and highlight common, generalizable ferruginous basin features. Logjams create an upstream backwater of deepened, slower water, locally reducing bed shear stress. We compared hydraulic impact of logjam series across 37 geomorphically diverse reaches of mountain streams observed over 11 years in the US Southern Rockies. To enable reach‐scale comparison of logjam structure and spacing, we identified the modeled best‐fit effective resistance coefficient minimizing difference between outflow exiting a 1D channel with logjams present, and the same model channel with elevated channel resistance. Effective resistance increased with ratio of jam upstream depth to depth without a logjam, ratio of backwater length to average spacing, and decreased for randomly distributed jams due to close spacing, which reduced backwater impact. An analytic approximation and boundaries for region of relative spacing with steepest increase in effective resistance are provided. Our results can assist in targeting interventions to areas where hydraulic impact is greatest, providing value for money in nature‐based solution design. The highest rate of increase in effective resistance with more logjams in the river reach occurs for an intermediate range of inter‐jam spacing relative to backwater length. Tidal flats are valuable ecosystems that depend on complex biogeomorphic processes between organisms and sediment transport. Climate change has led to a rise in extreme weather events, such as storms. This, in turn, has increased sediment dynamics and created risks for the benthic communities inhabiting tidal flats. However, replicating sediment disturbances caused by extreme weather is difficult. To overcome this, we used the plow rake to enhance the natural tidal currents and wave conditions to simulate intensified sediment dynamics. The raking disturbance was repeated on two intertidal zones with different inundation frequencies and wind fetch levels to simulate the increasing frequency of storm impact on sediments due to climate change. We compared the measurements of sediment dynamics and macrofauna between plots that were raked and the control plots that were only influenced by natural hydrodynamics. Results showed that tidal flat sediments experienced erosion by 10–20 mm after six times biweekly raking treatments, depending on the site‐specific hydrodynamic conditions. Sediment dynamics served as a helpful tool for monitoring the species distribution regarding mobility traits: the high dynamic exposed sites were inhabited by mobile species, while the low dynamic sheltered sites were characterized by less‐mobile species. Moreover, the raking treatment decreased the abundance of species with immobile traits, yet the species composition did not experience significant change. Overall, the present findings indicate that tidal flats with low sediment dynamics and immobile macrofauna are at higher risk of declining abundance under intensified sediment disturbances than areas with high sediment dynamics and mobile macrofauna. Understanding soil erosion and sediment transport from the hillslope scale to the regional scale is crucial for studies on water quality, soil‐water conservation, the lateral carbon cycle, environmental zoning and vulnerability. However, most existing erosion and sediment transport models are only applicable at the hillslope scale or for small watersheds with fine spatial resolutions (typically much less than 1 km). This study presents a process‐based soil erosion and sediment transport model for model applications designed for applications with coarse spatial (e.g., ≥10 km) and temporal (e.g., from hourly to daily) resolutions. This new model, referred to as VIC‐SED, effectively accounts for interactions between erosion and hydrological processes. This is achieved by tightly coupling the erosion processes with a hydrologically based Three‐layer Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC‐3L) land surface model (LSM) and to a multi‐scale routing (MSR) model. VIC‐SED considers the impacts of (a) the spatio‐temporal variability of rainfall intensity on erosion processes and (b) soil moisture on the soil detachment process. VIC‐SED is evaluated in two watersheds. Results demonstrate that VIC‐SED is capable of reproducing water and suspended sediment discharges at coarse spatial resolutions and varying temporal scales varying from 15‐min to daily intervals. Our study indicates that the VIC‐SED model is a promising tool for studying and assessing the impacts of climate and land cover changes on suspended sediment yields over large regions using coarse spatial and temporal resolutions. Sedimentary landforms on Earth and other planetary bodies are built through scour, transport, and deposition of sediment. Sediment connectivity refers to the hypothesis that pathways of sediment transport do not occur in isolation, but rather are mechanistically linked. In dryland river systems, one such example of sediment connectivity is the transport of fluvially deposited sediment by wind. However, predictive tools that can forecast fluvial‐aeolian sediment connectivity at meaningful scales are rare. Here we develop a suite of models for quantifying the availability of river‐sourced sediment for aeolian transport as a function of river flow, wind regime, and land cover across 168 km of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, USA. We compare and validate these models using topographic changes observed over 10 years in a coupled river sandbar‐aeolian dunefield setting. The models provide a path forward for directly linking fluvial hydrology with the management and understanding of aeolian landscapes. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Plain Language Summary: Accurate quantification of the change in the terrestrial water storage (TWS) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is imperative to improve the assessment of water availability that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. The modern Yellow River Delta (YRD) has witnessed frequent channel avulsions followed by the morphological processes of "wandering‐ short‐lived braiding ‐merging" in history. However, process‐based investigation and relevant physics behind these processes remain poorly constrained. The present study complements the understanding for this evolution through numerical experiments. This is achieved by applying a two‐dimensional (2‐D) depth‐averaged fully coupled morphodynamic model that considers the feedbacks of sediment‐laden flow and bed deformation to a schematized fan‐shaped YRD. Under an uneven bed of uniform sediment, the avulsed processes of "wandering‐ short‐lived braiding ‐merging" during new channel routing on the YRD are satisfactorily reproduced by the present modelling in terms of the time evolution of planar channel pattern and channel length. Moreover, the mechanisms of the avulsed evolution have been elucidated through factor analysis on delta slope, incoming flow‐sediment conditions and artificial trenching, etc. It is suggested that morphological stability could be reached when a single meandering channel is finally sustained, of which the time scale is 4–8 years echoing the documented data of abandoned channels on the YRD. In addition, quantitative criteria have been advocated to help distinguishing the sub‐stages of the avulsed evolution together with the characteristic pattern judgement. Based on the above, implications for the YRD management are discussed. Due to the coupled or interconnected relationships among frequent climate extremes, unique geological conditions, discontinuous soil distribution, rugged geomorphology, and highly heterogeneous landscapes in different karst watersheds, few studies were conducted to decouple the relative magnitudes of the climate, lithology, soil, topography, and landscape on soil erosion in karst regions. The objective of this study was to quantify the relative importance of these influencing factors on runoff and sediment yield (SY) in 40 typical karst watersheds in southwest China. To address this issue, the Pearson correlation and random forest were first to select the dominant factors influencing runoff and SY. Subsequently, the partial least squares‐structural equation model (PLS‐SEM) was used to decouple the complex relationships among runoff, SY and their potential influencing factors. Results showed that climate, lithology, soil, topography and landscape could explain 79% of the runoff variation, and only climate factors have significant impact on runoff for heterogeneous karst watersheds (P < 0.01, path coefficient (β) = 0.589). The explanation of five factors to SY variability is 59%, and the landscape has the greatest impact on SY (P < 0.01, β = −0.458). Different from runoff, climatic factors have no significant influence on SY. By elucidating a complex coupled relationship framework, this study can provide a scientific basis for the formulation of soil and water loss program, and the optimization of land resources and ecological environment sustainable development in karst watersheds. Based on U‐Pb dating of zircon crystals and petrographic analysis, this study provides new insights into the paleogeographic and accretion evolution along SW Japan. Our data are consistent with an older submarine fan identified from drilling in the Shikoku Basin (Kyushu Fan ∼14.7–12.2 Ma), having a mixed sand provenance from the paleo‐Yangtze/Yellow rivers and the Shimanto Belt, and the younger Zenisu Fan (∼9.2–7.6 Ma), which is mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. Our results are in agreement with the hypothesis of very oblique subduction or strike‐slip motion between the northern Shikoku Basin and mainland Honshu from ∼12.2 to 9.2 Ma, after which essentially orthogonal subduction occurred after ∼8 Ma. The two main sandbodies drilled at IODP Site C0002 within the inner Nankai Accretionary Prism have similar petrographic signatures to those of the Zenisu and Kyushu submarine fans in the Shikoku Basin. The incorporation of the Shikoku Basin deposits most likely resulted from the seaward propagation of in‐sequence thrusts forming an outer accretionary wedge. The incorporation of the Kyushu Fan into the inner accretionary prism implies that the décollement was located in the hemipelagic interval beneath the Kyushu Fan at least until ∼2 Ma, whereas it is now located in the hemipelagic intervals below the Zenisu Fan. Such shifts in décollement location are most likely related to changes in physical properties of the hemipelagic interval due to significant compaction and diagenesis during subduction. Based on U/Pb dating of zircon and petrographic analyses, this study focuses on the provenance, transport and accretion of sediments along SW Japan where a large‐magnitude earthquake occurred. U/Pb dating of zircon from sand sampled in the Shikoku Basin and in the frontal Nankai accretionary prism indicates a significant sediment input from SE China and from the Shimanto Belt from ∼14.7 to ∼8 Ma. The youngest submarine fan of the Shikoku Basin was mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. This agrees with the hypothesis of a very oblique subduction or strike‐slip motion of the Philippines Sea Plate between ∼12.2 and 9.2 Ma, after which orthogonal subduction occurred after ∼8 Ma. The deformed submarine fans observed in the accretionary prism show similar petrographic signatures to sandbodies of the Shikoku Basin located on the incoming plate. This indicates that the Shikoku Basin deposits were incorporated by seaward propagation of thrusts, likely after resurgence of orthogonal subduction ∼8 Ma. To our knowledge, this is the first time that any study has correlated stratigraphy on a subducting oceanic plate to the internal stratigraphy of a linked accretionary prism. The present paper develops a new framework to predict the mean flow through an array of cylinders in which the flow around the array (array‐scale) and the flow around individual cylinders (element‐scale) are modeled separately using actuator disc theory and empirical drag models respectively, and then coupled through the net drag force. Applying this framework only requires knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations for arrays of between 7 and 109 cylinders having different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and bounding shapes (circular, square) in both two‐ and three‐dimensional flows. In general, the framework outperforms existing models which require calibration and are only valid for part of the practical parameter space. The demonstrated scale separation suggests different combinations of element‐scale and array‐scale models/theories may be used for other arrangements of bluff bodies. To develop this predictive capacity, this study uses the idea of scale separation to integrate models from different research fields, including the actuator disc theory originally developed for design of turbines and propellers, and element‐scale drag models initially proposed for aquatic vegetated flows, to develop a unifying, predictive, analytical framework to estimate the mean flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations of arrays of cylinders with different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and array shapes (square, circular). With only knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow, the framework predicts the mean flow exceptionally well across a wide range of practical flow conditions. This leads to a step‐change in our ability to predict the fraction of incoming flow passing through a porous array, hydrodynamic load on offshore structures, and sediment flux within aquatic vegetation systems when combined with bed load transport models. The framework could be an important guide for coastal and riverine restoration projects using aquatic vegetation and the design of offshore structures and turbine farms. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. It's perhaps intuitive that a grain with more energy when it collides with the riverbed is able to chip away more bedrock. But, how much more destructive are these high energy impacts? We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This study used sediment cores collected from the interior of a mangrove forest to study how the aboveground roots, called pneumatophores, influence hydrodynamic conditions and sediment transport, and in particular the onset and rate of sediment erosion. Individual pneumatophores generate eddies that enhance turbulence, compared to conditions without pneumatophores. In sandy soil, vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion. However, in this study, vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase the rate of erosion for natural cohesive (muddy) sediment, suggesting that the mangrove forest interior has naturally greater resistance to erosion and sediment loss. This study examines the spatial pattern of fractional sediment mobility and assesses the influence of morphologic units on bedload transport in a small pool‐riffle reach with limited supply. Using a 2D hydraulic model and a subsurface‐based sediment transport model, shear stresses, fractional sediment mobility, and bedload transport were examined for flow events ranging in magnitude between 0.2Qbf and 1.5Qbf. Results reveal that while spatial variations in shear stress decrease as discharge increases, only a small proportion of the bed experiences high transport rates. At the reach scale, riffles are the primary morphological unit contributing to fully mobile sediment for all size fractions. However, at a subunit scale, there is evidence of sediment transport reversal for grains >32 mm at flows near or exceeding bankfull discharge in association with shear stress reversal. These transport reversals are important for maintaining pools despite their infrequent occurrence in the study reach. Sediment transport maps indicate that bed morphology considerably influences sediment transport at low to moderate flows. During these events, the shear stress is sensitive to local bed topography and partial mobility is the dominant transport process. In contrast, variations in bedload transport rates decrease during high flows when the flow is less sensitive to variations in bed topography and the bed becomes fully mobile. Wildfire substantially alters aquatic ecosystems by inducing moderate to catastrophic physical and chemical changes. However, the relations of environmental and watershed variables that drive those effects are complex. We present a Driver‐Factor‐Stressor‐Effect (DFSE) conceptual framework to assess the current state of the science related to post‐wildfire water‐quality. We reviewed 64 peer‐reviewed papers using the DFSE framework to identify drivers, factors, stressors, and effects associated with each study. A total of five drivers were identified and ranked according to their frequency of occurrence in the literature: atmospheric processes > fire characteristics > ecologic processes and characteristics > land surface characteristics > soil characteristics. Commonly reported stressors include increased nutrients, runoff, and sediment transport. Furthermore, although several different factors have been used at least once to explain water‐quality effects, relatively few factors outside of precipitation and fire characteristics are frequently studied. We identified several gaps indicating the need for long‐term monitoring, multi‐factor studies, consideration of organic contaminants, consideration of groundwater, and inclusion of soil characteristics. This assessment expands on other reviews and meta‐analyses by exploring causal linkages between influential variables and overall effects in post‐wildfire watersheds. Information gathered from our assessment and the framework itself can be used to inform future monitoring plans and as a guide for modeling efforts focused on better understanding specific processes or to mitigate potential risks of post‐wildfire water quality. Bedload sediment transport plays an important role in the evolution of rivers, marshes and deltas. In these aquatic environments, vegetation is widespread, and plant species have unique morphology. However, the impact of real plant morphology on flow and sediment transport has not been quantified. This study used model plants with real plant morphology, based on the aquatic species Phragmites australis, Acorus calamus and Typha latifolia. The frontal area of these species increases away from the bed, which leads to higher near‐bed velocity than would be predicted from depth‐average frontal area. A plant morphology coefficient was defined to quantify the impact of vertically‐varied plant frontal area. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the plant morphology coefficient improved the prediction of near‐bed velocity, near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy and bedload transport rate in canopies with realistic morphology. Plant morphology can alter transport rates by up to an order of magnitude, relative to the assumption of uniform morphology. Hydrogeomorphology studies river dynamics, focusing on the interactions between flow structure, sediment transport, and the morphologies that characterize rivers and their watersheds. It provides an analytical framework and tools for better integrating knowledge of river dynamics into river management in the broadest sense, and more specifically, into river restoration as well as into the assessment and prevention of risks associated with fluvial hazards. In Quebec, hydrogeomorphology is emerging as a significant contribution to risk assessment and management approaches, and is at the heart of a paradigm shift in river management whereby process restoration aims to increase the resilience of fluvial systems and societies, and improve the quality of fluvial environments. This contribution outlines the trajectory of hydrogeomorphology in Quebec, based on scientific publications by Quebec geographers, and discusses the discipline's aims in research and knowledge integration for river management. Dams disrupt the natural flow of water and sediment along rivers. Reservoirs trap a significant amount of sediment, which substantially alters downstream hydrology, channel morphology, and sediment transport capacity. The longitudinal recovery of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) along rivers is potentially a new metric for estimating downstream responses to dams over space, rather than time, but is rarely quantified due to the lack of spatial SSC data. Satellites can estimate SSC along rivers where no field data exist and provide a high enough spatial resolution for assessing downstream recovery at the scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers. Here, we use a recently published database of spatially explicit SSC observations derived from Landsat to quantify if a river recovers or not, the SSC recovery percentage, and SSC recovery length downstream of large dams across the Contiguous United States (CONUS). Rivers recover SSC downstream of most dams (71%). The chance of a river recovering and the length of river required to recover SSC is associated primarily with the size of the reservoir (mean storage, km3) and the size of the river (mean discharge, m3/s). Rivers were more likely to recover SSC downstream of run‐of‐river, navigation dams compared to large storage or hydropower dams. Our results suggest that rivers typically recover suspended sediment downstream of dams, influenced by factors like dam storage, purpose, and river channel characteristics. Slopes adjacent to the Bahamian carbonate platform revealed a large variety of depositional processes. In this study, we present a synthesis summarizing 109,000 km2 of bathymetric and reflectivity data with ∼7,900 km of seismic lines and 311 m of sediment cores that were obtained over the last 50 years. These data are used to develop a conceptual model of sedimentation patterns on Quaternary carbonate slope systems and their interaction with the adjacent shallow‐water carbonate platforms. Our data highlight that during the Quaternary, factors controlling large‐scale sedimentation on Bahamian slopes have numerous similarities as they have higher sedimentation rates during interglacials. At a small scale, every slope has its own characteristics that are contemporary controlled by two main characteristics: (a) facies on the adjacent shallow‐water platform, and (b) the impact of shallow‐ and deep‐water currents. Large‐scale tectonics influence sediment deposition as it determines the position of the islands and impacts platform facies distribution. To gain a better understanding of the processes involved, the sedimentary archives of the slopes connected to these carbonate platforms are consulted. Widely distributed in natural rivers and coasts, vegetation interacts with fluid flows and sediments in a variable and complicated manner. Such interactions make it difficult to predict associated drag forces during sediment transport. This paper investigates the drag coefficient for an emergent vegetated patch area under nonuniform flow and mobile bed conditions, based on an analytical model solving the momentum equation following our previous work (Zhang et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020WR027613). Emergent vegetation was modeled with rigid cylinders arranged in staggered arrays of different vegetation coverage ∅. Laboratory flume tests were conducted to measure variations in both the water and bed surfaces along a vegetated patch on a sand bed. Based on the experimental and theoretical analyses, a dimensionless drag model integrating both terms of flow properties and bed effects is proposed to predict the drag coefficient Cd over a mobile bed. The calculated values of Cd exhibit two different trends, that is, nonmonotonically or monotonically increasing along the streamwise direction, due to the combined effect of water surface gradient and bed slope. The morphodynamic response of the mobile bed to nonuniform flow manifests as an evolution in the bed slope within the vegetated patch. Ongoing scouring directs the flow's energy toward overcoming the rising Cd and bed slope, leading to a relatively stable stage with a low sediment transport rate. This study advances the existing understanding of the drag coefficient's role over a mobile bed within nonuniform flows. It also enhances the applicability of vegetation drag models in riverine restoration. The initiation threshold of sediment motion, a key component in quantifying sediment transport, has potential link to intermittent turbulence bursts. Here, we elaborated in situ experiments on coastal sea bottom covered with cohesive sediments, to obtain intermittency parameters. The variable "waiting time" between turbulence bursts was utilized to capture the occurrence of sediment initiation events in natural waters. A relationship between waiting time and shear stress reveals the different intermittency features of sediment flux time series before and after reaching the threshold, which can be used to determine the initiation threshold of sediment motion. Multi‐site results demonstrate the limitations of traditional empirical formulae for fine‐grained sediments, where cohesiveness becomes more pronounced as grain size decreases and the deviation can reach 600%. The empirical formula was modified using grain size, and the modified calculations were in good agreement with observed values, which will greatly assist in sediment transport and geomorphology model predictions. The dating of moraine deposits can present challenges to standard geochronological methods; terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN), sediment luminescence and radiocarbon dating may suffer from problems of incomplete resetting (by inheritance, intermittent cover/exposure, transport under unfavourable conditions) and/or a lack of suitable (organic) material. Rock surface luminescence burial dating (RSLBD) offers an alternative approach with considerable potential in dating moraines. In RSLBD, large cobbles/boulders are targeted, rather than smaller grains usually used in luminescence dating. The age limit of RSLBD is much higher than that of radiocarbon dating, and rocks are much more readily available than organic material. In contrast to TCN dating, the effect of exposure prior to deposition can be measured. In this study, we sampled a broad selection of primarily granitic boulders of various sizes and shapes (e.g. different degrees of roundness and sphericity) from the Vimmerby Moraine, a prominent and accessible feature in southern Sweden dated using TCN to 14.4±0.9 ka. Our study was designed to test whether morphological characteristics can be used to discriminate in favour of the most light‐exposed boulders and minimize measurements of non‐exposed boulders. As expected, not all RSLBD ages can be attributed to the same depositional event, but the majority of the resulting ages provide a mean age of 13.0±1.5 ka, consistent with the cosmogenic nuclide dating of the Vimmerby Moraine. Despite the apparently successful TCN study, the luminescence–depth profiles measured in the buried surfaces of the sampled clasts indicate that >50% of these moraine boulders were exposed to light (and cosmic radiation) before final deposition, implying some (presumably small) TCN inheritance; seven of the 16 boulders identified as light exposed were sufficiently bleached to be useful for RSLBD. Developed barrier systems (barrier islands and spits) are lowering and narrowing with sea‐level rise (SLR) such that habitation will eventually become infeasible or prohibitively expensive for most communities in its current form. Before reaching this state, choices will be made to modify the natural and built environment to reduce relatively short‐term risk. These choices will likely vary substantially even along the same developed barrier system as these landscapes are rarely uniformly managed alongshore. Building on the results from a companion paper, here we use a new modeling framework to investigate the complexities in barrier system dynamics that emerge as a function of alongshore variability in management strategies, accelerations in SLR, and changes in storm intensity and frequency. Model results suggest that when connected through alongshore sediment transport, barriers with alongshore variable management strategies—here, the construction of dunes and wide beaches to protect either roadways or communities—evolve differently than they would in the absence of alongshore connections. Shoreline stabilization by communities in one location influences neighboring areas managed solely for roadways, inducing long‐term system‐wide lags in shoreline retreat. Conversely, when barrier segments managed for roadways are allowed to overwash, this induces shoreline curvature system‐wide, thus enhancing erosion on nearby stabilized segments. Feedbacks between dunes, storms, overwash flux, and alongshore sediment transport also affect outcomes of climate adaptation measures. In the case of partial, early abandonment of roadway management, we find that system‐wide transitions to less vulnerable landscape states are possible, even under accelerated SLR and increased storminess. Plain Language Summary: Because humans inhabit barrier islands and spits (collectively referred to as "barriers") these landscapes, that would otherwise naturally change shape in response to storms and sea‐level rise (SLR), are influenced by efforts to protect development with wide beaches and tall dunes. These features interfere with a process called overwash, which transports sand landward during storms, building barrier elevation relative to sea level. Here, we use a new model to better understand how these interactions influence the habitability of barriers over time. Our simulations show that different management decisions made for adjacent coastal segments affect each other in positive and negative ways. When communities nourish beaches, adjacent to segments managed for roadways, some nourished sand reaches the adjacent segments, reducing shoreline erosion there. Conversely, portions of barriers that are managed only for roadways allow some overwash to reach the barrier interior; this negatively affects neighboring communities by enhancing their shoreline erosion rates. We find that early abandonment of dune management along portions of barriers may prevent highly vulnerable future states, such as barrier drowning. As communities explore choices for climate adaptation, our findings reveal the importance of coordination among decision makers in adjacent communities to avoid undesirable outcomes. Vegetation is an essential component of natural rivers and has significant effects on flow and morphodynamic processes. Although progress has been made in characterizing flow resistance in vegetated flows, the impact of vegetation on bed shear stress, a key driver of sediment transport, still needs better characterization and understanding. This research, explores bed shear stress and near‐bed flow characteristics in sparse arrays of rigid emergent cylinders mimicking vegetation over a rough bed. For this purpose, a novel adaptation of a shear plate was used to measure bed shear stress at the canopy scale. These measurements were analyzed in relation to spatially averaged near‐bed flow quantities for different array densities. The results show that, for a constant water depth, the investigated cylinder canopy enhances the ratio between bed shear stress and bulk flow velocity (i.e., Darcy‐Weisbach bed friction factor) compared to unobstructed open‐channel flows, and that this ratio increases with array density. Moreover, higher near‐bed velocities were observed for higher array densities. On the other hand, no influence of the cylinder array on near‐bed values of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent stresses was observed. Finally, it is shown that the thickness of the near‐bed layer is a suitable parameter to scale the ratio between bed shear stress and bulk flow velocity in vegetated rough bed flows. Dunes are important for bedload transport in almost all large river systems and exert an important control flow resistance. Investigating dunes is fundamental for simulating discharge, sediment transport, and flood routing. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of dunes and flow resistance remain poorly understood in large alluvial river systems mainly due to the lack of high‐resolution data. Here we analyzed in‐field observed data on annual profiles of 450 cross‐sections, river bathymetry, discharge, water levels, and sediment in the Middle Yangtze River, and found that dunes developed and flow resistance increased (+10%) in the post‐Three Gorges Dam period. We ascertain that the development of dunes plays the dominant role in augmenting flow resistance, as evidenced by roughness height change (+29%) using a modified Van Rijn method. Ultimately, dune development was incorporated into a hydrogeomorphic numerical model of the Yangtze River to improve flow resistance quantification, and thus, the water level simulation. Our findings highlight the potential increase in flow resistance in response to upstream damming in large rivers and have important implications for flood management and riverine ecology. In‐situ observations of hydrodynamics and suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) were conducted on an abandoned lobe in the northern part of the modern Yellow River Delta, China. The SSC record at the site is found to be the superposition of a general trend (fast increase and slow decrease cycle) caused by storm waves (SubSSC1) and relatively smaller fluctuations caused by tidal currents (SubSSC2). Physically, this indicates that storm waves eroded the bottom sediments while tidal currents then re‐suspended and advected the suspended sediments in the study area. To further obtain the suspended sediment transport parameters, first, SubSSC1 is modeled with significant wave height which incorporates a "memory curve" to consider the remaining impacts of historical waves. It is detected that waves in the past 75 hr still influence the present SSC which is reasonable because 75 hr is roughly the typical duration of a normal storm. Second, SubSSC2 is modeled with tidal excursion and trigonometric functions with measured periodicities. Finally, some sediment transport parameters, for example, the background SSC, the horizontal SSC gradient, the tidal constituents that advect it, and their relative time lags are optimized from the best fits of the measured and modeled SSC time series. The proposed framework for model construction and parameter optimization can be extended to other sea areas for inferring sediment transport parameters from field SSC time series at a specific station. Plain Language Summary: The evolution of our coastal zone fundamentally depends on the transport volume and direction of sediment, and understanding them is very beneficial for our coastal engineering construction and long‐term planning. Conducting in situ observations on‐site is one of the most reliable methods, but its observation cost is expensive. This article successfully extracted the above information from the observation data of a station. As climate warms, hydrology and geomorphology in glacierized catchments are evolving, changing sediment export from these catchments, thus impacting downstream ecosystems and communities. Currently, much uncertainty persists regarding interactions among geomorphic processes that evacuate sediment from glacierized catchments. Here, we present a catchment‐scale numerical model of subglacial and proglacial sediment transport with debris meltout processes. We apply the model in a Monte Carlo framework to suspended sediment data collected over 2014–2020 from the Fieschertal catchment in the Swiss Alps, assessing possible combinations of geomorphic processes responsible for suspended sediment discharge. The ensemble of model outputs quantifies the interaction of different geomorphic processes, including the trade‐off between bedrock erosion and sediment previously stored in the catchment. Model runs suggest that, at some periods, up to 20% of the sediment leaving the glacier is deposited in the proglacial area relative to the catchment's total sediment discharge. This shows that the model captures the proglacial area change from sediment source to sediment sink in different hydrological and glaciological conditions. Understanding the material properties and physical conditions of basal ice is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of Antarctic ice‐sheet dynamics. Yet, direct data are sparse and difficult to acquire. Here, we employ ultra‐wideband radar to map high‐backscatter zones near the glacier bed within East Antarctica's Jutulstraumen drainage basin. Our backscatter analysis reveals that the basal ice in an area of ∼10,000 km2 is composed of along‐flow oriented sediment‐laden basal ice units connected to the basal substrate, extending up to several hundred meters thick. Three‐dimensional thermomechanical modeling supports that these units form via basal freeze‐on of subglacial water that originated from further upstream. Our findings suggest that basal freeze‐on, and the entrainment and transport of subglacial material play a significant role in an accurate representation of material, physical, and rheological properties of the Antarctic ice sheet's basal ice, ultimately enhancing the accuracy and reliability of ice‐sheet modeling. A high‐resolution wave model is crucial for accurate modeling of sediment and organic material transports, but its computational costs hinder direct coupling to an ecosystem model. We developed a machine learning model using long short‐term memory to simulate large‐scale, high‐resolution waves. Trained with numerical wave model (NWM) outputs and wind data from nine locations, our model successfully replicates NWM results for daily mean significant wave height and period in Chesapeake Bay with identical spatial resolution. Compared to the NWM, the data‐driven model has root‐mean‐square errors below 6 cm for daily mean significant wave height and 1 s for the wave period in the bay. It demonstrates excellent model skills and can accurately forecast daily mean significant wave height and period at NOAA wave stations comparable to NWMs. Using minimal wind data and having a short runtime, our data‐driven model shows promise as an alternative for wave forecasting and coupling with sediment and ecological models. Feedbacks between sediment and plants in the submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds of the Susquehanna Flats help modulate sediment delivery into the upper Chesapeake Bay from its major tributary (Susquehanna River). Recent modeling work has shown that SAV can steer the river plume, directly controlling sediment transport and fate. However, transport mechanisms likely differ between flood and non‐flood conditions and depend on event timing. An opportunity to evaluate these insights in the field occurred with several flood events in summer 2018. Sediment and biomass samples were collected after the flood in the large, continuous main SAV bed of the Flats and in smaller patches to the west of the main bed to evaluate the effect of SAV bed size (width). Sediment characteristics (grain size, organic content) and deposition rates were compared to previous observations during non‐flood conditions in the main bed in 2014–2015 and in the smaller patches in 2019. Overall, sediment deposition rates could be predicted by an empirical model including sediment load, vegetation biomass, and SAV bed width, reflecting the role of vegetation in steering the Susquehanna River plume and modulating sediment input to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of sedimentation is essential for realistic estimates of sediment and nutrient (especially nitrogen and carbon) storage in freshwater SAV systems, which have not received as much attention as their saltwater counterparts. Relocating levees further back from river channels to increase river–floodplain connection can reduce flood stages and provide a host of co‐benefits. Modeling case studies show the significant potential of large levee setbacks for reducing flood stages; however, the difficulty of comparing between these case studies limits our understanding of how the hydraulic effects of setbacks vary in different settings. We filled this research gap by systematically modeling the hydraulic effects of setbacks across a range of river and flood conditions. We used unsteady, 1D Hydrologic Engineering Center‐River Analysis System models to quantify changes in flood stage, channel velocity, and sediment transport capacity for various setback sizes with different river slopes, widths, floodplain roughness, and flood sizes (peak flows) and durations. Setbacks reduce flood stages within the setback, as well as up‐ and downstream. Channel velocity and sediment transport capacity both increased upstream and decreased within the setback. Channel slope, flood size, and flood duration had the largest influence on hydraulic changes. There are diminishing returns in hydraulic effects with increasing setback size. These results can help guide the design and prioritization of levee setback projects and help set reasonable expectations for the scale of changes to flood hydraulics relative to the size of the reconnected floodplain. The present knowledge of plunging hyperpycnal river plumes is mainly based on two‐dimensional (confined) laboratory experiments. Several hypotheses on three‐dimensional (unconfined) flow processes have been made, but not tested in situ. In this field study, the dominant three‐dimensional hydro‐sedimentary processes related to unconfined plunging were elucidated by synchronizing autonomous time‐lapse camera images with boat‐towed acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements. It was found that the flow field complies with two‐dimensional conceptualizations along the plume centerline. Perpendicular to the centerline, the plume slumped laterally due to its density excess and simultaneously converged laterally due to its vertical divergence. This combination led to a narrowing of the plume near the surface, resulting in a sediment‐rich triangle‐shaped pattern on the surface near the inflow, and a rather stable width near the bed. The formation of secondary flow cells transporting riverine water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) away from the plume near the bed, up toward the surface and back toward the plume near the surface, was revealed. An increase of the average SPM concentration and the SPM flux in the main flow direction indicates net sediment erosion under the investigated conditions of high discharge and sediment load. This suggests transient storage of sediment during conditions of lower discharge and sediment load, and high morphological activity in the plunging area. These findings allowed extending a classical conceptual plunging model to laterally unconfined sediment‐laden plunging inflows for conditions of well‐mixed ambient water in the plunging region and inflow densimetric Froude numbers exceeding 1, common in nature. Other processes, including two swirling flows transporting river water and sediment back toward the surface, were revealed. These contribute to the spreading and mixing of river water and sediment in different ways from those measured in laboratory representations of reservoirs. Furthermore, the plunging river water eroded the lake bed near the river mouth during the measurements. The results from this study lead to a better understanding of plunging flows in lakes and allow for improved modeling and better predictions of such flows. Shorelines face growing threats due to climate change and diminishing sand supply. Coastal headlands, common rocky features along coastlines, are crucial in shaping hydrodynamics and sediment transport. Yet, the influence of future climate conditions, including sea‐level rise (SLR) and intensified storm energy on complex shorelines with headlands has remained relatively unexplored. In this study, we model changes in hydrodynamics and headland bypassing under different SLR and higher storm wave scenarios. Our findings reveal the formation of circulation cells on both sides of a headland, where wave energy converges around the headland zone. Future climate conditions result in larger storm waves on the beach. However, SLR enhances nearshore currents through a landward shifting of the circulation cells, while higher storm waves intensify offshore flow currents due to the seaward movement of the cells. This effect, in turn, increases the potential for headland sediment bypassing. Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior. However, in the laboratory, we identified the physical mechanisms influencing sediment deposition and erosion and their change over a natural flow regime to illustrate that the same full‐sized willow patch can either enhance or reduce sediment deposition within the patch interior relative to the same channel without vegetation. The amount of sediment deposited in the vegetation patch depended on the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the water, which changed as the flow decreased. Additionally, the presence of a single vegetation patch fundamentally changed the character of the channel from depositional to erosional near the patch, indicating that more erosion occurred in adjacent channels than deposition within the patch. Deposition and erosion of the bed were also influenced by the amount of sediment supplied to the channel from upstream. This reach‐scale sediment supply was modified by a sediment mound that formed at the upstream end of the patch during high sediment supply to the channel. The mound redistributed the sediment transport within the channel and vegetation patch, revealing another physical mechanism influencing the spatial and temporal variability of bedload transport in vegetated channels. The presence of a late Quaternary ice sheet/ice shelf over the East Siberian Sea has been proposed in several papers. Here, we further document its duration/resilience based on the sedimentary, bulk mineralogical, and geochemical (organic matter content and its stable isotopic composition, U‐Th series) properties of a core raised from the southernmost Mendeleev Ridge. The chronostratigraphy of the studied core was mainly built from the 230Th excess (230Thxs) distribution and decay downcore. At the core‐top, peaking 230Thxs values during the early MIS 3 and mid‐MIS 1 encompassing an MIS 2 hiatus were observed. As documented in several papers, these peaks suggest seasonally open ice conditions over proximal continental shelves. Below, the interval spanning MIS 4 and possibly MIS 5d records major ice‐rafting events illustrated by overall high coarse‐fraction contents. Underlying MIS 5e, down to MIS 11, the sediment depicts relatively low sand (1.7±2.5 dw%), high clay (33.5±4.7 dw%), and very low organic carbon (0.10±0.06 dw%) contents, and low δ13Corg values (−24.3±0.9‰). This section is interpreted as recording fine sediment transport by deep currents and/or meltwater plumes below a resilient ice cover, only interrupted by a few short‐duration events. These events include (i) detrital carbonate pulses assigned to deglacial events along the NW Laurentide Ice Sheet margin (Termination (T) III), and (ii) intervals with some planktonic foraminifer occurrences, likely relating to their advection from open areas of the Arctic Ocean (MIS 5e, 9 and 11). All Terminations, but TII and the early MIS 3, show peaking Mn/Al values linked to the submergence of Arctic shelves under a rising sea level. We conclude that the resilient ice cover, likely an ice shelf, has been present over the southern Mendeleev Ridge during most of the interval after the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition and was favoured by the low summer insolation of the MIS 14 to 10 interval. The majority of sediment transported from rivers to the global oceans is moved in suspension as fine particles. Thereby, the transported sediment shapes the physical environment regarding erosive and accumulative processes. Temporal variations in sediment supply and transport lead to unquantified uncertainties in annual load estimates, requiring high‐resolution data sets and a sound understanding of site‐specific catchment characteristics. We investigate the temporal variability of suspended sediment transport in four catchments in Germany with highly different discharge regimes and catchment sizes (<1,000 km2 to >100,000 km2). The data set consists of high‐resolution 15‐min turbidity measurements with daily discharge and frequent manual sampling. Utilizing a bootstrap approach based on the 15‐min time series, we assessed the impact of the sampling interval on annual load estimates for less frequent data sets. We use the sediment load exceedance time (Ts80%) as a measure of variability and relate it to uncertainties in annual load estimates. Since low‐frequency data sets rely on sediment rating curves, we performed a sensitivity analysis of the rating parameters a, b, and ε. Our results indicate a negative exponential relationship between Ts80% and uncertainties in annual load estimates. Based on the Ts80%, we can derive the shortest sampling frequency necessary to obtain annual load estimates with an error of <20% over varying discharge regimes. Additionally, Ts80% is linked to rating exponent b, with low b‐values indicating high Ts80%‐values and lower variability, and high b‐values indicating higher variability. Sustainable river management often requires long‐term morphological simulations. As the future is unknown, uncertainty needs to be accounted for, which may require probabilistic simulations covering a large parameter domain. Even for one‐dimensional models, simulation times can be long. One of the acceleration strategies is simplification of models by neglecting terms in the governing hydrodynamic equations. Examples are the quasi‐steady model and the diffusive wave model, both widely used by scientists and practitioners. Here, we establish under which conditions these simplified models are accurate. Based on results of linear stability analyses of the St. Venant‐Exner equations, we assess migration celerities and damping of infinitesimal, but long riverbed perturbations. We did this for the full dynamic model, that is, no terms neglected, as well as for the simplified models. The accuracy of the simplified models was obtained from comparison between the characteristics of the riverbed perturbations for simplified models and the full dynamic model. We executed a spatial‐mode and a temporal‐mode linear analysis and compared the results with numerical modeling results for the full dynamic and simplified models, for very small and large bed waves. The numerical results match best with the temporal‐mode linear analysis. We show that the quasi‐steady model is highly accurate for Froude numbers up to 0.7, probably even for long river reaches with large flood wave damping. Although the diffusive wave model accurately predicts flood wave migration and damping, key morphological metrics deviate more than 5% (10%) from the full dynamic model when Froude numbers exceed 0.2 (0.3). It remains an open question how the hydrodynamics and morphology in sharp meander bends adapt to the changes in flow and sediment conditions induced by upstream damming. This study reports a comprehensive investigation into the morphological changes, patterns of mean and secondary flows and sediment transport around two consecutive sharp bends in the Middle Yangtze River (MYR), and explains these changes from the viewpoint of flow‐sediment transport‐morphology interaction based on field measurements. With the Three Gorges Project operation, the MYR suffered a remarkable channel degradation due to a sudden decrease of incoming sediment discharge. The point bars were removed, and outer‐bank benches (OBB) formed upstream of the bend apices, which resulted in quite different flow and sediment transport patterns in the bends. The highest velocity zones and center‐region cells of secondary flow were more toward the inner bank due to the lack of point bars, and the outward migration of momentum was delayed. Flow recirculation zones were observed over the OBBs, covering 12%–58% of the channel width. The transport rates of suspended load accounted for 98% of the total sediment load, and the outward shift of the highest transport rate zone was confined by the OBBs, which reduced the effective width of sediment transport. These changes in flow and sediment transport re‐inforced the morphological changes around the sharp bends: the velocity redistribution and evolution of scour factor lagged more behind planform curvature, which further promoted the erosion of point bars and the development of OBB.
