This paper focuses on integrating multimodal communication into the English-as-a-foreign-language classroom to enhance the development of students’ multimodal communicative competence, multiliteracies, and 21st-century skills. To do so, I compiled a corpus of authentic materials from Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers in Julia Quinn’s novel The Viscount Who Loved Me (2000), her appearances as narrator in the Netflix series Bridgerton (2022), and some tweets posted by @Bridgerton. This corpus was used to plan and design a game-based teaching proposal. Finally, the paper offers a critical analysis and suggests how this proposal can feasibly contribute to fostering students’ multimodal communicative competence.

Taking the Xinshan iron ore mine as an example, this paper, based on collecting and analyzing the actual production data and similar simulation test data of this iron ore mine, analyses various factors affecting ore depletion by bottomless column segmental chipping method by using hierarchical analysis method (AHP) and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method (FCE), and establishes an evaluation system for comprehensively assessing the depletion of the ores. The results show that structural parameters, blasting parameters, loading parameters, and geological conditions are the main factors affecting ore depletion. The structural parameters are the most important factors, accounting for 35%. With the increase of the released amount, the released grade gradually decreases, the depletion rate gradually increases, and the comprehensive evaluation value gradually decreases. The released body is an approximate ellipsoidal block with a wide upper and narrower lower part. The end wall plays an obstructive role in the flow of the bulk body, which makes the end of the released grade higher and the middle of the released body higher. At the same time, due to the influence of blasting and shovel loading, the particles in the release body show some sorting phenomena. This paper provides a scientific basis and reference for predicting and controlling ore depletion in the bottomless column segmental chipping method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comparative study for minimum areas in contact with the ground of RIF (rectangular isolated footings) y CIF (circular isolated footings) that work totally CM (Current model) or partially NM (New model) under compression. Methodology is described using the equations developed by the same author for RIF y CIF. Main findings: RIF under uniaxial bending have less area than CIF in the CM and in the NM; NM presents less area than CM for RIF y CIF under biaxial bending in all cases; NM for CIF shows less area than RIF, when the moments are equals and the relation of the axial load divided by the moment is 0.75 or greater, when the smallest moment divided by the largest moment is between 0.50 and 0.75, and the axial load is greater than the largest moment. This article analyzes the cuir identity of an EFL student-teacher within the context of his pedagogical practicum. We adopt the term cuir as an analytical category to explore how notions of teacher identity and language pedagogy are mutually constructed. The paper challenges the traditional language pedagogy paradigm and its binary-disciplinary and heterosexist constructions of standardization. The findings documented that the construction of cuir emerges from the experiences in the body in oppressive situations. Also, a cuir identity is sometimes not risked on certain occasions and, in others, is enacted in transgressive ways through pedagogical practices. This study discusses how the cuir can be articulated with education, traditionally seen as a locus for normalization, dis-gendering, and dis-embodiment.

This paper reports a mixed-method study on the factors shaping language learning through didactic audiovisual translation. The aim is to analyse the determinants influencing the effective implementation of an integrative project, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the learning process. Data from 172 students were gathered through initial and final questionnaires, which offered insights into their perceptions of didactic audiovisual translation. The results demonstrate a noticeable shift in learners’ attitudes towards audiovisual translation as a language learning tool during the tasks. This transformation led to the recognition of potential benefits, not only in conventional modes like subtitling and dubbing but also in less recognised modes such as audio-description and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This paper aims to extend our understanding of the factors underlying teacher wellbeing and the stress-coping mechanisms that professionals from the field use in their daily lives. The study focuses on the point of view of EFL teachers working in Andalusia, the southern region of Spain. Through semi-structured interviews and using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory for the content analysis of data, the project identifies the primary sources of distress and growth that participants link to their profession. Key among them are emotional competence, the school environment, legislation, and boundaries. The study also pinpoints the main stress-coping strategies participants were already implementing in their lives to fight against feelings of burnout. Especially relevant is the practice of hobbies, professional training, and establishing boundaries.

This paper reports a mixed-methods study at a public university in Colombia. It describes the classroom assessment practices and challenges of 75 novice foreign language teachers. To gather the quantitative data, the participants completed an online survey. For the qualitative data, 11 key informants participated in one-on-one online interviews. Findings revealed that novice teachers predominantly used summative assessment in the classroom and aligned their assessment instruments to large-scale tests. Moreover, novice teachers faced many challenges with classroom assessment, including determining how to assess their students, developing assessment instruments, and interpreting and using assessment scores to inform teaching and learning. In conclusion, novice teachers need more knowledge, skills, and support to handle daily assessment-related tasks.
