Purpose: This study aims to explore the characteristics of drug recall announcements issued over six years by the SFDA in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, to examine the patterns of voluntary drug recall requests by pharmaceutical companies (both innovator and generic) in response to product defects. Methods: A retrospective data analysis was conducted on drug recall announcements issued by the SFDA between 2017 and December 2022. The study included recalls of registered and unregistered drugs posted on the SFDA Drugs Circulars and Withdrawal webpage. Descriptive analysis was performed on relevant variables: recall year, therapeutic class, recall type, pharmaceutical company type, recall reasons and voluntary or involuntary product defect reports. Results: During the study period, a total of 371 products were recalled, with the majority being involuntary recalls (82.4%). About two-thirds of the recalls (66.0%) were related to registered products. The most common reasons for recalls were non-compliance with the manufacturer's specifications (33.2%), contamination (23.7%), and violations (20.5%). A total of 109 pharmaceutical companies were associated with the recalled products, with (85.3%) being generic pharmaceutical companies. The majority of innovator pharmaceutical companies (68.8%) requested voluntary drug recalls of defective products. Innovator pharmaceutical companies requested voluntary recalls more often than generic pharmaceutical companies. Conclusion: The study findings highlight the most frequent causes of drug recalls and the patterns of voluntary recall requests by pharmaceutical companies. Non-compliance with manufacturer's specifications was the most common reason for recalls. Over the last two decades, awe has attracted the attention of an increasing number of researchers. The use of virtual reality has been identified as one of the most effective techniques for eliciting awe, in addition to more personalized methods for inducing emotion, such as autobiographical recall. However, previous measures of awe were unable to uncover the hidden structure of this experience. Awe experience scale (AWE-S) has been validated as a comprehensive measure of contingent awe in English, providing new opportunities for analysis. In this two-phases study, we investigated whether the latent structure of the experience of awe evoked by the autobiographical recall technique (Study 1) overlapped with that induced by exposing participants to a validated virtual reality awe-eliciting training (Study 2). The original English AWE-S structure held both in autobiographical recall induction and virtual reality-based elicitation. Despite evidence of overlap between English and Italian structures, low correlations were found between Italian trait measures used to test the concurrent validity of the AWE-S in the Italian sample and AWE-S state dimensions. This study highlights cultural differences in awe experience, trait, and state variations, and provides new insights into the standardized induction of this emotion through simulated environments. Recent work has examined the interaction between space and time in memory search, but there is still limited understanding of this relationship. Here, we test the hypothesis that individuals can exert control over how time and space interact in response to subtle differences in task instructions. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed two experiments where participants completed two immediate free recall tasks, a verbal task involving words presented at a central location and a spatial task involving squares presented at different locations. Some participants were free to recall the words or locations spontaneously in any order they preferred. In contrast, another group was subtly biased toward temporal information by instructions to begin recall from the last presented item before recalling the remaining items in any order they wished. Replicating recent work, all conditions showed clear evidence that recall was organized along both the temporal and the spatial dimensions. Extending this work, we found that the subtle change in recall instructions increased the reliance on temporal information in the spatial recall task. Correlational analyses suggest that spatial and temporal information do not compete when participants search memory spontaneously. However, they do compete when instructions favor temporal information. These findings highlight that individuals can exert some cognitive control over how associative dimensions interact during memory search and emphasize the importance of incorporating such processes into theoretical models. Recent research suggests that committing to corporate social responsibility (CSR) can induce moral licensing among employees, resulting in unethical behaviors. We extend this line of research and develop a theoretical framework to study how CSR influences managerial decision-making in crisis management. We test this theory in the context of product recall remediation. We examine under what circumstances CSR induces morally consistent or morally dubious recall remedial decisions and factors moderating this effect. We focus on two product recall remedial decisions that differ in ambiguity—full versus partial compensation and proactive versus passive recall. We predict and show that a company's strong prior CSR performance increases the likelihood of full compensation but decreases the likelihood of a proactive recall. This finding suggests that CSR can induce moral licensing behavior at the highest corporate level when a decision is morally difficult to diagnose. Further analysis reveals that consumer harm and institutional ownership moderate the relationship between CSR and these two remediation strategies. Together, our findings provide important insights into when CSR leads to moral licensing in crisis remediation and how the link can be mitigated, and thus shed light on when CSR yields consistent and meaningful ethical business decisions. Abstract Stimulated Recall (SR) has long been used in educational settings as an approach of retrospection. However, with the fast growing of digital learning and advanced technologies in educational settings over the past decade, the extent to which stimulated recall has been effectively implemented by researchers remains minimal. This systematic review reveals that SR has been primarily employed to probe the patterns of participants’ thinking, to examine the effects of instructional strategies, and to promote metacognitive level. Notably, SR video stimuli have advanced, and the sources of stimuli have become more diverse, including the incorporation of physiological data. Additionally, researchers have applied various strategies, such as flexible intervals and questioning techniques, in SR interviews. Furthermore, this article discusses the relationships between different SR research items, including stimuli and learning contexts. The review and analysis also demonstrate that stimulated recall may be further enhanced by integrating multiple data sources, applying intelligent algorithms, and incorporating conversational agents enabled by generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of SR studies in the realm of education and proposes a promising avenue for researchers to proactively apply stimulated recall in investigating educational issues in the digital era.

Attentional engagement is known to vary on a moment-to-moment basis. However, few self-report methods can effectively capture dynamic fluctuations in attentional engagement over time. In the current paper, we evaluated the utility of stimulated recall, a method wherein individuals are asked to remember their subjective states while using a mnemonic cue, for the measurement of temporal changes in attentional engagement. Participants were asked to watch a video lecture, during which we assessed their in-the-moment levels of attentional engagement using intermittent thought probes. Then, we used stimulated recall by cueing participants with short video clips from the lecture to retrospectively assess the levels of attentional engagement they had experienced when they first watched those clips within the lecture. Experiment 1 assessed the statistical overlap between in-the-moment and video-stimulated ratings. Experiment 2 assessed the generalizability of video-stimulated recall across different types of lectures. Experiment 3 assessed the impact of presenting video-stimulated probe clips in non-chronological order. Experiment 4 assessed the effect of video-stimulated recall on its own. Across all experiments, we found statistically robust correspondence between in-the-moment and video-stimulated ratings of attentional engagement, illustrating a strong convergence between these two methods of assessment. Taken together, our findings indicate that stimulated recall provides a new and practical methodological approach that can accurately capture dynamic fluctuations in subjective attentional states over time. Empirical studies of conversational recall show that the amount of conversation that can be recalled after a delay is limited and biased in favor of one's own contributions. What aspects of a conversational interaction shape what will and will not be recalled? This study aims to predict the contents of conversation that will be recalled based on linguistic features of what was said. Across 59 conversational dyads, we observed that two linguistic features that are hallmarks of interactive language use—disfluency (um/uh) and backchannelling (ok, yeah)—promoted recall. Two other features—disagreements between the interlocutors and use of "like"—were not predictive of recall. While self-generated material was better remembered overall, both hearing and producing disfluency and backchannels improved memory for the associated utterances. Finally, the disfluency-related memory boost was similar regardless of the number of disfluencies in the utterance. Background: Malnutrition in cirrhosis is associated with poor outcomes, leading to guidelines for a high protein, low sodium diet; however, there is no guidance regarding the implementation of diet education in clinical practice. Methods: A mixed methods study enrolled 21 patients with cirrhosis and their caregivers. Semi-structured interviews on barriers and facilitators of dietary education and adherence were conducted. Demographic and clinical data were obtained, along with quantitative measures of dietary adherence, including 24-h food recall and spot urine sodium. Combined deductive and inductive coding was used to identify qualitative themes, along with a quantitative assessment of interviews. Quantitative data was reported using descriptive statistics with frequencies, mean and confidence intervals. Results: Participants were mostly male (16/21) with a mean age 57.8 years (SE 2.8) and MELD-Na 9 (SE 1.2). 4 themes emerged: 1. More than 50% of participants and caregivers endorsed no or inadequate diet education 2. They reported mostly negative experiences with dietary adherence with largest impact on social life 3. Facilitators of adherence included the presence of household support and fear of complications of cirrhosis 4. Overwhelmingly desired non-generic handouts and information. Dietary adherence was poor with only one participant meeting protein and sodium requirements based on food recall. Four participants who adhered to < 2000 mg sodium had inadequate daily caloric intake. Conclusions: Dietary education is inadequate, and adherence to dietary recommendations is poor in patients with cirrhosis. People often subdivide a list into smaller pieces, called chunks. Some theories of serial recall assume memories are stored hierarchically, with all-or-none retrieval of chunks, but most mathematical models avoid hierarchical assumptions. Johnson (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 8(6), 725–731, 1969) found steep drops in errors following correct recalls (transitional-error probabilities) within putative chunks during multi-trial letter-list learning, and viewed this as evidence for all-or-none retrieval. Here we test whether all-or-none retrieval occurs in lists studied only once. In serial recall of six-word lists (Experiment 1), transitional-error probabilities were inconsistent with all-or-none retrieval, both when participants were instructed to subdivide and when temporal grouping induced subdivision. Curiously, the same analysis of previous temporally grouped nine-letter lists produced compelling evidence for all-or-none retrieval, which may result from recoding rather than the formation of chunks. In Experiment 2, participants were pre-trained on three-word chunks. For nine-word lists constructed from those trained chunks, transitional-error probabilities exhibited more pronounced evidence of all-or-none retrieval. Nearly all effects reversed with post-cued backward recall, suggesting mechanisms that play out over the course of recall rather than encoding of the list. In sum, subdivided lists do not result in hierarchical memories after a single study trial, although they may emerge in lists formed from chunks that are previously learned as such. Autobiographical memory specificity is known to contribute to better mental health, social problem-solving, and episodic future thinking. While numerous studies have addressed variables that affect autobiographical memory specificity, little is known regarding the meta-memory processes that underpin memory retrieval. In this study, we introduced two meta-memory constructs, ease of retrieval judgments and anticipation of negative emotion evoked, which potentially affect autobiographical memory specificity. Participants (N = 109) first rated the ease of retrieval and anticipated emotions for positive and negative words used in a subsequent autobiographical memory test. We used the Optional Instructions of the Autobiographical Memory Test, in which participants were instructed that "specific memories are better, but other memories are permissible," allowing them to adjust how much cognitive effort they spent on generative retrieval after a failure of direct retrieval. They also self-judged whether each retrieval was generative (using additional cues with cognitive effort) or direct (immediate recall without much cognitive effort). Results showed that for generative retrieval, ease of retrieval was associated with greater specific and general memories and fewer omissions. A more negative anticipated emotion was associated with fewer specific memories and greater omissions, but was not with general memories. These results suggest that low retrievability and anticipated negative emotion prevent individuals from devoting efforts to generative retrieval. The lack of association between anticipated negative emotion and general memory calls into question the functional avoidance hypothesis regarding autobiographical memory specificity. When a firm announces a product recall it typically incurs a market penalty in the form of a decline in its stock price. But a specific recall announcement often happens among recalls by other firms in the industry. Could recent recalls by other firms in the industry impact the market penalty for a new recall announcement? To capture and test this effect, the authors conceptualize recall environment intensity. Using salience theory, they identify the dimensions of the recall environment intensity construct, confirm these dimensions using interviews and a survey, and develop a measure for the construct. The authors then develop hypotheses for the effect of recall environment intensity on the stock penalty for a new recall announcement and propose boundary conditions for the effect. The hypotheses are tested using data from the automobile industry to show that a firm that announces a recall in a high intensity recall environment will have a smaller decline in stock price, though the effect varies with the reliability reputation of the brand and the age of the recalled products. The study provides a nuanced understanding of the stock market response to recall announcements and offers guidance on how to conceptualize and measure recall environment intensity. Memory scientists usually compare mean performance on some measure(s) (accuracy, confidence, latency) as a function of experimental condition. Some researchers have made within-subject variability in task performance a focal outcome measure (e.g., Yao et al., Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, 38, 227–237, 2016). Here, we explored between-subject variability in accuracy as a function of experimental conditions. This work was inspired by an incidental finding in a previous study, in which we observed greater variability in accuracy of memory performance on cued recall (CR) versus free recall (FR) of English animal/object nouns (Mah et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 14, 1146200, 2023). Here we report experiments designed to assess the reliability of that pattern and to explore its causes (e.g., differential interpretation of instructions, [un]relatedness of CR word pairs, encoding time). In Experiment 1 (N = 120 undergraduates), we replicated the CR:FR variability difference with a more representative set of English nouns. In Experiments 2A (N = 117 Prolific participants) and 2B (N = 127 undergraduates), we found that the CR:FR variability difference persisted in a forced-recall procedure. In Experiment 3 (N = 260 Prolific participants), we used meaningfully related word pairs and still found greater variability in CR than in FR performance. In Experiment 4 (N = 360 Prolific participants), we equated CR and FR study phases by having all participants study pairs and, again, observed greater variability in CR than FR. The same was true in Experiment 5 (N = 120 undergraduates), in which study time was self-paced. The ability of individuals to recall events is influenced by the time interval between the monitoring time and the occurrence of the event. In this article, we introduce a non-recall probability function that incorporates this information into our modeling framework. We model the time-to-event using the Weibull distribution and adopt a latent variable approach to handle situations where recall is not possible. In the classical framework, we obtain point estimators using expectation-maximization algorithm and construct the observed Fisher information matrix using missing information principle. Within the Bayesian paradigm, we derive point estimators under suitable choice of priors and calculate highest posterior density intervals using Markov Chain Monte Carlo samples. To assess the performance of the proposed estimators, we conduct an extensive simulation study. Firms struggle to respond to product recalls and achieve high recall effectiveness, i.e., the percentage of affected consumers who participate in corrective actions. We present the first comprehensive study of recall effectiveness that analyzes a broader set of product categories, identifies managerially relevant drivers, outlines boundary conditions, and demonstrates the underlying psychological processes. Specifically, three studies investigate the impact of remedy choice, incident likelihood, and their interaction with firm reputation on recall effectiveness. In Study 1 (unique secondary data set), we show that remedy choice and incident likelihood each interact with the firm's reputation to influence recall effectiveness. In two subsequent experiments, we not only test the findings of the secondary data in a causal setting but also examine the underlying psychological process. We find that offering full remedy leads to higher recall effectiveness for high reputation firms and that recall effectiveness is higher for recalls with a high incident likelihood, but only for high reputation firms. In both cases, firms not only make consumers feel like they would benefit more from participating in the recall, but they also make them feel more comfortable in their ability to participate in the recall. Authenticity is positively associated with important psychological outcomes in the workplace, such as well-being and engagement, and is reliant on having a coherent sense of self. This coherent self is maintained by recalling autobiographical memories (AM). But the specific relationships between authenticity and memory functions are unclear. This study aims to first, identify differences in memory function and content in the recall of authentic and inauthentic moments and second, address how these AM functions are related to authenticity, engagement and well-being. Participants completed measures of authenticity, engagement and well-being before and after a memory recall task. For the recall task, they were randomly assigned to recall either an authentic, inauthentic, or control memory. Recall narratives were coded for memory functions (self-identity, social, directive) and for physical/social context features. Authentic moments, inauthentic moments and controls differed in terms of social and physical contexts. Authentic moments were most likely to involve being alone while inauthentic moments were most likely to happen at work. Authentic or inauthentic moments were both more likely than controls to involve work colleagues, with inauthentic moments also involving more distant acquaintances such as bosses or customers. In addition, recalling a memory, no matter what type, increased engagement and authentic self-awareness. While there was no difference between authentic or inauthentic moments in influencing these outcomes, individuals' pre-recall levels of engagement and authenticity influenced the memory functions used. This taxonomy of (in)authentic moment recall can guide future research in authenticity and memory function. Many evaluations of binary classifiers begin by adopting a pair of indicators, most often sensitivity and specificity or precision and recall. Despite this, we lack a general, pan-disciplinary basis for choosing one pair over the other, or over one of four other sibling pairs. Related obscurity afflicts the choice between the receiver operating characteristic and the precision-recall curve. Here, I return to first principles to separate concerns and distinguish more than 50 foundational concepts. This allows me to establish six rules that allow one to identify which pair is correct. The choice depends on the context in which the classifier is to operate, the intended use of the classifications, their intended user(s), and the measurability of the underlying classes, but not skew. The rules can be applied by those who develop, operate, or regulate them to classifiers composed of technology, people, or combinations of the two. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cameras are the prevalent sensors used for perception in autonomous robotic systems, but their initial calibration may degrade over time due to dynamic factors. This may lead to a failure of downstream tasks, such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) or object recognition. Hence, a computationally lightweight process that detects the decalibration is of interest. We describe a modification of StOCaMo, an online calibration monitoring procedure for a stereoscopic system. The method uses robust kernel correlation based on epipolar constraints; it validates extrinsic calibration parameters on a single frame with no temporal tracking. In this paper, we present a modified StOCaMo with an improved recall rate on small decalibrations through a confirmation technique based on resampled variance. With fixed parameters learned on a realistic synthetic dataset from CARLA, StOCaMo and its proposed modification were tested on multiple sequences from two real-world datasets: KITTI and EuRoC MAV. The modification improved the recall of StOCaMo by 25 % (to 91 % and 82 %, respectively), and the accuracy by 12 % (to 94.7 % and 87.5 %, respectively), while labeling at most one-third of the input data as uninformative. In a real-life study using time-based ambulatory assessment, we investigated how to unobtrusively capture within-subject and between-subject variations in flow in everyday life. We compared two observation approaches, momentary states, and coverage, which differed in the reference of flow reports and sampling frequency. Depending on condition, participants (N = 38) answered either ten or five queries per day that referred to the current state or the last two hours (n = 1442 observations in total). We found no effect of either approach on compliance, flow intensity, or flow reports over time. However, the approaches differed with respect to flow probability reports, within-subject variability in flow reports, and perceived burden. In addition, we introduced a reduced three-item version of the Flow Short Scale. Our results indicate acceptable to good reliability as well as concurrent, convergent and discriminant validity of this scale. Based on our findings, we recommend that the choice of observation approach for capturing everyday flow depends on the outcome of interest, the targeted comparison within- or between-subjects, and the expected task variability of the participants. Recent events are easy to recall, but they also interfere with the recall of more distant, non-recent events. In many computational models, non-recent memories are recalled by using the context associated with those events as a cue. Some models, however, do little to explain how people initially activate non-recent contexts in the service of accurate recall. We addressed this limitation by evaluating two candidate mechanisms within the Context-Maintenance and Retrieval model. The first is a Backward-Walk mechanism that iteratively applies a generate/recognize process to covertly retrieve progressively less recent items. The second is a Post-Encoding Pre-Production Reinstatement (PEPPR) mechanism that formally implements a metacognitive control process that reinstates non-recent contexts prior to retrieval. Models including these mechanisms make divergent predictions about the dynamics of response production and monitoring when recalling non-recent items. Before producing non-recent items, Backward-Walk cues covert retrievals of several recent items, whereas PEPPR cues few, if any, covert retrievals of that sort. We tested these predictions using archival data from a dual-list externalized free recall paradigm that required subjects to report all items that came to mind while recalling from the non-recent list. Simulations showed that only the model including PEPPR accurately predicted covert recall patterns. That same model fit the behavioral data well. These findings suggest that self-initiated context reinstatement plays an important role in recall of non-recent memories and provides a formal model that uses a parsimonious non-hierarchical context representation of how such reinstatement might occur. With the attentional boost effect (ABE), responding to a briefly presented target in a detection task enhances the encoding of other items presented at the same time. However, the effects of target detection on context memory for the event in which the stimulus appeared remain unclear. Here, we present findings from verbal free recall and recognition experiments that test the effects of target detection during encoding on temporal and relational aspects of context memory. Consistent with prior demonstrations of limited effects of target detection on context memory, in Experiment 1 there was no evidence that target detection influenced the likelihood of transitioning to items that were presented at similar times during encoding, or that were in the same encoding condition. These null effects were replicated in a second experiment, which added an old/new recognition and relational memory test. These results indicate that target detection during encoding has minimal effects on the formation of temporal associations between words in memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Food intake biomarkers are used to estimate dietary exposure; however, selecting a single biomarker to evaluate a specific dietary component is difficult due to the overlap of diverse compounds from different foods. Therefore, combining two or more biomarkers can increase the sensitivity and specificity of food intake estimates. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of metabolite panels to distinguish between self-reported fruit consumers and non-consumers among participants in the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health. Materials and methods: A total of 93 healthy adults of both sexes were selected from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health. A 24-h dietary recall was obtained using the computer-assisted 24-h food recall GloboDiet software, and 24-h urine samples were collected from each participant. Metabolites were identified in urine using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry by comparing their exact mass and fragmentation patterns using free-access databases. Multivariate receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis were used to verify the ability of the metabolite combination to classify daily and non-daily fruit consumers. Fruit intake was identified using a 24 h dietary recall (24 h-DR). Results: Bananas, grapes, and oranges are included in the summary. The panel of biomarkers exhibited an area under the curve (AUC) > 0.6 (Orange AUC = 0.665; Grape AUC = 0.622; Bananas AUC = 0.602; All fruits AUC = 0.679; Citrus AUC = 0.693) and variable importance projection score > 1.0, and these were useful for assessing the sensitivity and predictability of food intake in our population. Conclusion: A panel of metabolites was able to classify self-reported fruit consumers with strong predictive power and high specificity and sensitivity values except for banana and total fruit intake. Existing research is inconsistent regarding the effects of gesture production on narrative recall. Most studies have examined the effects of gesture production during a recall phase, not during encoding, and findings regarding gesture's effects are mixed. The present study examined whether producing gestures at encoding could benefit an individual's narrative recall and whether this effect is moderated by verbal memory and spatial ability. This study also investigated whether producing certain types of gesture is most beneficial to recalling details of a narrative. Participants read a narrative aloud while producing their own gestures at pre-specified phrases in the narrative (Instructed Gesture condition), while placing both their hands behind their backs (No Gesture condition) or with no specific instructions regarding gesture (Spontaneous Gesture condition). Participants completed measures of spatial ability and verbal memory. Recall was measured through both free recall, and specific recall questions related to particular phrases in the narrative. Spontaneous gesture production at encoding benefited free recall, while instructed gestures provided the greatest benefit for recall of specific phrases where gesture had been prompted during encoding. Conversely, for recall of specific phrases where gesture had not been prompted during encoding, instructions to either gesture or not gesture suppressed recall for those higher in verbal memory. The orientation of sketch maps of remote but familiar city squares produced from memory has been shown to depend on the distance and airline direction from the production site to the remembered square (position-dependent recall, Röhrich et al. in PLoS One 9(11): e112793, 2014). Here, we present a virtual reality version of the original experiment and additionally study the role of body orientation. Three main points can be made: First, "immersive sketching" is a novel and useful paradigm in which subjects sketch maps live on paper while being immersed in virtual reality. Second, the original effect of position-dependent recall was confirmed, indicating that the sense of being present at a particular location, even if generated in a virtual environment, suffices to bias the imagery of distant places. Finally, the orientation of the produced sketch maps depended also on the body orientation of the subjects. At each production site, body orientation was controlled by varying the position of the live feed in the virtual environment, such that subjects had to turn towards the prescribed direction. Position-dependent recall is strongest if subjects are aligned with the airline direction to the target and virtually goes away if they turn in the opposite direction. So far, there is evidence showing that the use of specific emotion regulation strategies in response to negatively-valenced stimuli shapes the way people subsequently remember them. However, still little is known about the potential effects of savouring positive events on the associated memories. The aim of the current study was to test whether upregulating positive emotions in response to daily positive events could make participants’ memories more salient and positively-valenced over time. To do so, we conducted an ecological momentary assessment study in order to identify the occurrence of positive events and provide participants with different emotion regulation strategies in real-time. To explore memory phenomenology, a surprise recall task for each event was performed one week after. Compared to the control condition, the manipulation of savouring led to recall the events with greater salience (i.e., more vivid, coherent, accessible, full of sensory details, first-person recalled memories) which, in turn, led to retrieve the memory more positively. Furthermore, the findings indicated that each strategy uniquely affected different phenomenological dimensions of memory. Together, we suggest that differences in the use of savouring strategies might impact memory, leading to the recall of events with higher salience and to the maintenance of their positivity over time. Purpose: Despite stringent regulations enforced by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), numerous drug products still enter the market without adequate assurance of safety and efficacy, resulting in frequent recalls. To explore the real picture of such recalls, this analysis focuses on the USFDA drug recalls with a glance at medical devices, food products, biological products, cosmetics, tobacco products, and veterinary products from 2019 to 2023. The research aims to quantify and categorize these drug recalls, examining various contributing factors to recommend strategies for minimizing future recalls. Additionally, it investigates the influence of global and national crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, on the USFDA’s drug recall process. Methods: Data from USFDA Enforcement reports were collected and sorted, and descriptive statistics were used to analyse drug recalls. Results: Between 2019 and 2023, the USFDA documented 31125 recalls, of which 6217 involved drug products from 593 different companies. These recalls are frequently initiated by the companies themselves, with primary causes including sterility assurance failures, contamination, and improper storage conditions. Conclusions: Drug recalls are a double-edged sword: while they are essential for protecting public health, they can also disrupt supply chains and lead to drug shortages, especially when there are no alternatives available. To prevent such disruptions, strict adherence to current Good Manufacturing Practices, along with comprehensive internal audits and rigorous USFDA inspections are vital for manufacturers to maintain quality standards and minimize the risk of recalls. We extend the prophet inequality problem to a competitive setting. At every period, a new realization of a random variable with a known distribution arrives, which is publicly observed. Then, two players simultaneously decide whether to pick an available value or to pass and wait until the next period (ties are broken uniformly at random). As soon as a player gets a value, he leaves the market and his payoff is the value of this realization. In the first variant, namely the "no recall" case, the agents can only bid at each period for the current value. In a second variant, the "full recall" case, the agents can also bid for any of the previous realizations which has not been already selected. For each variant, we study the subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium payoffs of the corresponding game. More specifically, we give a full characterization in the full recall case and show in particular that the expected payoffs of the players at any equilibrium are always equal, whereas in the no recall case the set of equilibrium payoffs typically has full dimension. Regarding the welfare at equilibrium, surprisingly the best equilibrium payoff a player can have may be strictly higher in the no recall case. However, the sum of equilibrium payoffs is weakly larger when the players have full recall. Finally, we show that in the case of 2 arrivals and arbitrary distributions, the prices of Anarchy and Stability in the no recall case are at most 4/3, and this bound is tight. Researchers have often claimed that the interviewer's nonverbal behavior such as nodding facilitates rapport building, the number of recalled details, and verbal veracity cues. However, there is no experiment to-date that isolated the effects of nodding in information gathering interviews. We thus examined the effects of interviewer's nodding behavior on rapport perceptions and on the number and accuracy of total details provided by truth tellers and lie tellers. Participants (N = 150) watched a video recording and then reported it truthfully or falsely to an interviewer. The interviewer showed demeanor that was either supportive with nodding, supportive without nodding, or neutral. Truth tellers reported more total details than lie tellers and these effects were similar across demeanor conditions. No significant effects emerged for rapport perceptions and accuracy of total details. Given the recent interest in how memory operates in social contexts, it is more important than ever to meaningfully measure the similarity between recall sequences of different individuals. Similarity of recall sequences of different individuals has been quantified using primarily order-agnostic and some order-sensitive measures specific to memory research without agreement on any one preferred measure. However, edit distance measures have not been used to quantify the similarity of recall sequences in collaborative memory studies. In the current study, we review a broad range of similarity measures, highlighting commonalities and differences. Using simulations and behavioral data, we show that edit distances do measure a memory-relevant factor of similarity and capture information distinct from that captured by order-agnostic measures. We answer illustrative research questions which demonstrate potential applications of edit distances in collaborative and individual memory settings and reveal the unique impact collaboration has on similarity. Children in malaria-endemic regions can experience repeated Plasmodium infections over short periods of time. Effects of re-infection on multiple co-existing CD4+ T cell subsets remain unresolved. Here, we examine antigen-experienced CD4+ T cells during re-infection in mice, using scRNA-seq/TCR-seq and spatial transcriptomics. TCR transgenic TEM cells initiate rapid Th1/Tr1 recall responses prior to proliferating, while GC Tfh counterparts are refractory, with TCM/Tfh-like cells exhibiting modest non-proliferative responses. Th1-recall is a partial facsimile of primary Th1-responses, with no upregulated effector-associated genes being unique to recall. Polyclonal, TCR-diverse, CD4+ T cells exhibit similar recall dynamics, with individual clones giving rise to multiple effectors including highly proliferative Th1/Tr1 cells, as well as GC Tfh and Tfh-like cells lacking proliferative capacity. Thus, we show substantial diversity in recall responses mounted by multiple co-existing CD4+ T cell subsets in the spleen, and present graphical user interfaces for studying gene expression dynamics and clonal relationships during re-infection. Despite the promising progress that has been made, large-scale clustering tasks still face various challenges: (i) high time and space complexity in K-nearest neighbors (KNN), which is often overlooked by most methods, and (ii) low recall rate caused by simply splitting the dataset. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for large-scale clustering tasks named large-scale clustering via recall KNN and subgraph segmentation (LS-RKSS) to perform faster clustering with guaranteed clustering performance, which embraces the ability of handling large-scale data up to 100 million using a single T4 GPU with less than 10% of the running time. We propose recall KNN (RKNN) and subgraph segmentation (SS) to effectively address the primary challenges in large-scale clustering tasks. Firstly, the recall KNN is proposed to perform efficient similarity search among dense vectors with lower time and space complexity compared to traditional exact search methods of KNN. Then, the subgraph segmentation is proposed to split the whole dataset into multiple subgraphs based on the recall KNN. Given the recall rate of RKNN based on traditional exact search methods, it is theoretically proved that dividing the dataset into multiple subgraphs using recall KNN and subgraph segmentation is a more reasonable and effective approach. Finally, clusters are generated independently on each subgraph, and the final clustering result is obtained by combining the results of all subgraphs. Mood-incongruency effects in autobiographical recall have been conceptualized as a function of the emotion regulation through which the content and the phenomenology of the autobiographical memories serve to repair negative moods. Arguing that negative mood automatically activates mnemonic emotion regulation, in the present study we examined how negative emotions guide the subsequent spontaneous and instructed recall and whether distinct phenomenological patterns are observed in mnemonic regulation of sadness and anger. After participants watched video clips for sadness, anger, or happiness, they reported first any event that comes to their mind (spontaneous recall), then an event that specifically makes them happy (instructed recall). We found the changes in the phenomenology of the reported events was different for sadness and anger groups. While more robust changes were observed for sadness earlier in the spontaneous recall with higher phenomenological ratings than the anger group, in the instructed recall the difference disappeared, suggesting for the relatively late-onset compensation in the anger group. The retention of fundamental mathematical skills is imperative to provide a foundation on which new skills are developed. Educators often lament about student retention. Cognitive scientists and educators have explored teaching methods that produce learning which endures over time. We wanted to know if using spaced recall quizzes would prevent our students from forgetting fundamental mathematical concepts at a post high school preparatory school where students attend for 1 year preparing to enter the United States Military Academy (USMA). This approach was implemented in a Precalculus course to determine if it would improve students' long-term retention. Our goal was to identify an effective classroom strategy that led to student recall of fundamental mathematical concepts through the end of the academic year. The concepts that were considered for long-term retention were 12 concepts identified by USMA's mathematics department as being fundamental for entering students. These concepts are taught during quarter one of the Precalculus with Introduction to Calculus course at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. It is expected that students will remember the concepts when they take the post-test 6 months later. Our research shows that spaced recall in the form of quizzing had a statistically significant impact on reducing the forgetting of the fundamental concepts while not adversely effecting performance on current instructional concepts. Additionally, these results persisted across multiple sections of the course taught at different times of the day by six instructors with varying teaching styles and years of teaching experience. Story recall is an episodic memory paradigm that is popular among researchers interested in the effects of aging, disease, and/or injury on memory functioning; it is less popular among individual-differences researchers studying neurotypical young adults. One reason differential psychologists may favor other episodic memory paradigms is that the prospect of scoring story recall is daunting, as it typically requires manually scoring hundreds or thousands of freely recalled narratives. In this study, I investigated two questions related to scoring story recall for individual differences research. First, whether there is anything to gain by scoring story recall for memory of central and peripheral details or if a single score is sufficient. Second, I investigated whether scoring can be automated using computational methods – namely, BERTScore and GPT-4. A total of 235 individuals participated in this study. At the latent variable level, central and peripheral factors were highly correlated (r = .99), and the two factors correlated with external factors (viz., fluid intelligence, crystallized intelligence, and working memory capacity) similarly. Regarding automated scoring, both BERTScore and GPT-4 derived scores were strongly correlated with manually derived scores (r ≥ .97); additionally, factors estimated from the various scoring methods all showed a similar pattern of correlations with the external factors. Thus, differential psychologists may be able to streamline scoring by disregarding detail type and by using automated approaches. Further research is needed, particularly of the automated approaches, as both BERTScore and GPT-4 derived scores were occasionally leptokurtic while manual scores were not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the relationship between birth memory and recall and the perception of traumatic birth in women who were a postpartum one-year period and the affecting factors. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 285 participants in the pediatric department of a state university medical school. Data were collected using a participant information form, Birth Memories and Recall Questionnaire, and Perception of Traumatic Childbirth Scale. In the study, it was determined that the women had a moderate level of birth memories and recall, and the rate of those with a "high" and "very high" perception of traumatic childbirth was 45.9%. According to path analysis, Birth Memories and Recall Questionnaire score and educational status (primary secondary school) have a positive and significant effect on the perception of traumatic birth. The perception of traumatic birth was a predictor that explained 17.3% of birth memories and recall. Nearly half of the study participants perceived the experience of giving birth as traumatic, and birth memories and recall were at a moderate level. Stimulated Recall (SR) has long been used in educational settings as an approach of retrospection. However, with the fast growing of digital learning and advanced technologies in educational settings over the past decade, the extent to which stimulated recall has been effectively implemented by researchers remains minimal. This systematic review reveals that SR has been primarily employed to probe the patterns of participants' thinking, to examine the effects of instructional strategies, and to promote metacognitive level. Notably, SR video stimuli have advanced, and the sources of stimuli have become more diverse, including the incorporation of physiological data. Additionally, researchers have applied various strategies, such as flexible intervals and questioning techniques, in SR interviews. Furthermore, this article discusses the relationships between different SR research items, including stimuli and learning contexts. The review and analysis also demonstrate that stimulated recall may be further enhanced by integrating multiple data sources, applying intelligent algorithms, and incorporating conversational agents enabled by generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of SR studies in the realm of education and proposes a promising avenue for researchers to proactively apply stimulated recall in investigating educational issues in the digital era. This paper examines the implications of chief marketing officers (CMOs) when firms experience crisis situations. In the context of product recalls, we analyze CMO impacts from the perspectives of two critical stakeholders—consumers and investors. For consumers, we find that firms with a CMO manage recalls for better consumer protection by issuing recalls earlier and having fewer consumer harm incidents than firms without a CMO. For investors, we find that firm financial value drops significantly more for firms with a CMO than those without a CMO when recall happens. These findings generate a more holistic picture of CMOs in the growing literature on the roles and impacts of marketing leadership. Judgments of learning (JOLs) are designed to reveal processes of memory monitoring but recent research has shown that JOLs can also have reactive effects on memory performance. A recently proposed account for JOL reactivity is based on the item-specific/relational framework, a general account of memory encoding that has been applied to a wide range of memory phenomena. Importantly, the effects of these phenomena on free recall performance are generally moderated by list composition: the effects are stronger in mixed than pure list manipulations – that is, these phenomena exhibit design effects. Applied to JOL reactivity, the item-specific/relational account likewise predicts design effects. Specifically, the account predicts that JOL reactivity should be more positive in mixed compared to pure lists. In three experiments, judgment condition (JOL vs. no JOL) and list type (mixed vs. pure) were manipulated and memory assessed with free recall. As hypothesized, JOL reactivity was consistently more positive in mixed than pure lists, a result found with related word pairs (Experiment 1), unrelated word pairs (Experiment 2), and lists of single words (Experiment 3). This study sought to determine whether there was any correlation between the dietary diversity score and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in Nepali women who were of reproductive age. In a national cross-sectional population-based survey of women (15–49 years) (N = 7442) in Nepal, MDD was assessed with the PHQ-9 and GAD with the GAD-7, and dietary diversity with a 24 h food consumption recall of 10 food groups. Multinominal and logistic regression were used to estimate predictors of MDD and GAD symptoms. The prevalence of mild and moderate-to-severe MDD symptoms was 15.7% and 5.4%, respectively, and the prevalence of mild and moderate-to-severe GAD symptoms was 20.8% and 7.5%, respectively. The overall dietary diversity mean score was 4.66 (SD = 1.67). In the final multivariable model, adjusted for relevant confounders, dietary diversity was inversely associated with moderate-to-severe MDD symptoms (Adjusted Incidence Risk Ratios-AIRR: 0.90, 95% CI 0.84–0.97), and with moderate-to-severe GAD symptoms (AIRR: 0.86, 95% CI 0.80–0.92). This study was conducted to examine the effect of birth memory, recall level, and related factors on postpartum mothers' breastfeeding attitudes. This is a correlational prospective study. The study was conducted in the postpartum clinic of a city hospital in a province located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. The study included a total of 248 mothers in the early postpartum period. Data were obtained via a Personal Information Form, a Labor Monitoring Form, the Birth Memories and Recall Questionnaire (BirthMARQ), the Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS), and the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IOWA). A positive correlation was found between mothers' level of birth memory and recall and breastfeeding attitude on postpartum day 1, month 1, and month 3. In the regression analysis, emotional memory and coherence and reliving, which are the sub-dimensions of the birth memory and recall scale affecting breastfeeding attitude, were found to be significant associated risk factors for the 1st postpartum day, consistency and reliving for the 1st month, and birth memory and recall for the 3rd month. No relationship was found between mothers' breastfeeding attitude and birth satisfaction on postpartum day 1, month 1, and month 3. Positive birth memory and recall positively affected mothers' breastfeeding attitude. No relationship was found between mothers' labor satisfaction and breastfeeding attitude. Supporting women for the formation of positive birth memory and recall for the labor process may positively improve breastfeeding attitudes of mothers in the postpartum period. Acute appendicitis is a typical surgical emergency worldwide and one of the common causes of surgical acute abdomen in the elderly. Accurately diagnosing and differentiating acute appendicitis can assist clinicians in formulating a scientific and reasonable treatment plan and providing high-quality medical services for the elderly. In this study, we validated and analyzed the different performances of various machine learning models based on the analysis of clinical data, so as to construct a simple, fast, and accurate estimation method for the diagnosis of early acute appendicitis. The dataset of this paper was obtained from the medical data of elderly patients with acute appendicitis attending the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Chinese Medicine from January 2012 to January 2022, including 196 males (60.87%) and 126 females (39.13%), including 103 (31.99%) patients with complicated appendicitis and 219 (68.01%) patients with uncomplicated appendicitis. By comparing and analyzing the prediction results of the models implemented by nine different machine learning techniques (LR, CART, RF, SVM, Bayes, KNN, NN, FDA, and GBM), we found that the GBM algorithm gave the optimal results and that sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, precision, recall, F1 and brier are 0.9167, 0.9739, 0.9429, 0.9613, 0.9429, 0.9167, 0.9296, and 0.05649, respectively. The GBM model prediction results are interpreted using the SHAP technology framework. Calibration and Decision curve analysis also show that the machine learning model proposed in this paper has some clinical and economic benefits. Finally, we developed the Shiny application for complicated appendicitis diagnosis to assist clinicians in quickly and effectively recognizing patients with complicated appendicitis (CA) and uncomplicated appendicitis (UA), and to formulate a more reasonable and scientific clinical plan for acute appendicitis patient population promptly. Classification is a common task in data mining that assigns a class label to an unseen situation. It has been widely used in decision making for various applications, and many machine learning algorithms have been developed to accomplish this task. Classification becomes critical when the problem under concern is related to serious situations such as fraud detection, cancer diseases, and quality control. Learning in these situations is characterized by predetermined asymmetric costs of incorrect class prediction, or critical consequences associated with erroneous class prediction. In this paper, a novel approach of cost-sensitive learning is proposed. The approach is constructed by employing the theory of logical analysis of data (LAD) to build accurate cost-sensitive classifiers. Two classifiers are proposed. The first classifier is established by solving a proposed pattern selection model, minimum misclassification cost model (MMCM), that aims at minimizing the asymmetric misclassification cost. The second classifier is established by solving another proposed pattern selection model, maximum precision–recall model (MPRM), that maximizes precision and recall willing to reach a 100% accuracy. A comparative study is conducted by using real datasets. The proposed MMCM has enabled LAD to realize up to 32.22% cost reduction from the misclassification cost realized by the traditional implementation of LAD. Moreover, MPRM has provided up to 19.15% increase in the precision and up to 37% increase in the recall. Also, MPRM has enhanced the performance of LAD while compared to common machine learning algorithms by providing better combinations of recall and false positive rate. This enabled LAD to provide the closet to the optimal point on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) diagram when compared with existing machine learning methods. Incorporating the MMCM and the MPRM models into LAD establishes a novel implementation of LAD that makes LAD a promising cost-sensitive learning classifier compared to other machine learning classifiers. User textual reviews have become a significant data source for enhancing the efficacy of recommendation systems as e-commerce website use has increased. These evaluations feature nuanced customer opinions that typically reflect their product preferences. On the other hand, the majority of conventional recommender systems (RS) disregard such user feedback and hence fall short of accurately capturing users' unique product thoughts. The majority of these techniques rely on handcrafted and rule-based approaches, which are known to be labor-intensive and time-consuming. Although other approaches try to employ fine-grained user opinions to somewhat enhance the accuracy of recommendation systems. Their applicability is therefore restricted. To address the aforementioned issues, this research develops an opinion-mining recommendation system that combines Information Extraction with Two-Layered ODNN and Semantic Analysis. The first layer uses NB and MSGM to forecast the aspects specified in the feedback, while the second layer uses ODNN to specify the opinion orientation as well as sentiment analysis. First and foremost, data pre-processing is critical before entering data into models, as it aids in reaching high accuracy. Special methods were necessary for textual data, including tokenization, stop word deletion, and user name removal, all of which were used in this study. Second, the first layer may focus on the critical context words to the given aspect terms in sentences utilizing NB, MSGM, and Enthalpy measure. Last but not least, Second Layer Opinion The outcome of sentiment categorization aspect polarities opinion orientation as positive, negative, and neutral is predicted using ODNN. In terms of information, the results of the experiments suggest that our proposed strategy outperforms current methods in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall for the Amazon product review at 95.29%, 96.67%, and 96.18%. To control for the general effects of self-reflection, Study 2 participants (N = 396) wrote about either achievement or non-achievement-oriented events.Mixed-model Time X Condition ANCOVAs were conducted with pride as the dependent variable and social anxiety as covariate. Both studies revealed significant increases in pride and positive affect following recall of achievement events, and (Study 2) no significant change following recall of non-achievement events. The recommendation system assists in selecting the best product among the millions of products available on various e-commerce sites. An effective recommendation system can save the user's time while looking for a suitable product. People are spending more time on the internet these days, and their interests vary over time; as a result, their preference data is accumulating at a rapid pace. The recommendation algorithms should be scalable enough to process this large-scale data efficiently. It should also preserve the relationship between time and user preferences. Matrix factorization is a useful technique in this case. It is, however, dependent on the users' previous transactions and confronts data sparsity and scalability issues. In this study, we proposed a recommendation model utilizing distributed alternating least square matrix factorization that incorporates product ratings along with user reviews. It utilizes the up-vote technique to justify user reviews and the weighted rating normalization approach to assign a normalized rating to the reviews, which helps in improving recommendations. The proposed method is scalable enough to efficiently process the large amount of data generated due to user reviews and ratings. Extensive experiments were performed to validate the outcomes on the well-known Amazon reviews dataset utilizing the Apache Spark cluster. The proposed methodology outperformed state-of-the-art models in product recommendations, achieving an average precision of 89.1% and an average recall of 84.1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Background and aims: Micro-elimination projects targeted to specific hepatitis C virus (HCV) risk populations have been successful. Systematic identification of persons with HCV viremia, regardless of risk group, based on already available laboratory records may represent an effective macroelimination approach to achieve global HCV elimination. Methods: Persons with a last positive HCV-RNA PCR result between 2008–2020 in the reference virology laboratories in eastern Austria were identified. First, (i) we described their demographic characteristics, (ii) we systematically recalled persons to the respective centers and (iii) started antiviral treatment if HCV-RNA viremia was confirmed, and (iv) recorded sustained virologic response (SVR). This interim report includes the preliminary results from 8 participating centers. Results: During the study period 22,682 persons underwent HCV-RNA PCR testing, 11,216 (49.4%) were positive at any point in time, and 6006 (26.5%) showed detectable HCV-RNA at the last PCR test, suggesting ongoing HCV viremia. At the time of this interim report, 2546/6006 HCV-RNA PCR(+) persons were evaluated: 443/2546 (17.4%) had died, 852/2546 (33.5%) had invalid contact data, and 547/2546 (21.5%) had achieved SVR between data retrieval and recall. Contact could be established in 236/704 (33.5%) of the remaining target population with 97/236 (41.1%) presenting at the clinic for treatment evaluation. Ultimately, 71/236 (30.1%) started antiviral treatment and SVR was documented in 47/71 (66.2%). Conclusion: This ELIMINATE project based on systematic assessment of HCV-RNA PCR-records, identified 6006 persons with potential persisting HCV viremia. Invalid contact data and missed visits for treatment evaluation were the main barriers towards HCV elimination within this project.
