Based on an analysis of qualitative research papers published between 2019 and 2021 in four top-tier management journals, we outline three interrelated silences that play a role in the objectification of qualitative research: silencing of noninterview data, silencing the researcher, and silencing context. Our analysis unpacks six silencing moves: creating a hierarchy of data, marginalizing noninterview data, downplaying researcher subjectivity, weakening the value of researcher interpretation, thin description, and backgrounding context. We suggest how researchers might resist the objectification of qualitative research and regain its original promise in developing more impactful and interesting theories: noninterview data can be unsilenced by democratizing data sources and utilizing nonverbal data, the researcher can be unsilenced by leveraging engagement and crafting interpretations, and finally, context can be unsilenced by foregrounding context as an interpretative lens and contextualizing the researcher, the researched, and the research project. Overall, we contribute to current understandings of the objectification of qualitative research by both unpacking particular moves that play a role in it and delineating specific practices that help researchers embrace subjectivity and engage in inspired theorizing. This paper explores the concept of "community-engaged research" (CEnR) within the context of Veteran health care delivery and reintegration programs. A multi-sector expert panel (msExP) was formed to evaluate and make recommendations on Veteran community reintegration research and programs. The panel consisted of Veterans, care partners, clinical providers, researchers, community stakeholders, and subject matter experts. The paper examines the composition and lifecycle of the panel, highlighting the characteristics and experiences of the participants. Shifts in the panel's purpose and engagement levels occurred in response to unanticipated disruptions, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. The transformation of the panel emphasizes the importance of aligning individual and group needs and deepening intrapersonal relationships Findings based on observations, surveys, and interviews with panel members contribute to the field of community-engaged research by demonstrating the utility of catalytic validity that balances group and individual development. As part of a broader study on Veteran reintegration, the panel and its development over time allowed for various perspectives on Veteran experiences and reintegration within the community that shaped the overall project. Despite the challenges of developing and maintaining a panel alongside a research study, feedback from the panel members on their participation provides insight into the potential for future working alliances in community-engaged health research. This paper uses Carol Bacchi's 'What's the problem represented to be?' (WPR) framework to explore representations of women's mental health in federal and South Australian mental health policies. It argues that mental health policies govern women through neoliberal discourses that individualise mental health and illness while neglecting the social structural factors which significantly influence mental health outcomes and health equity. In a 'self-monitoring' neoliberal society, people are increasingly required to seek medical and pharmaceutical intervention to promote ideal personhoods, with women overrepresented in this group. The disciplinary power of the medicalisation discourse categorises women as either ideal or failed neoliberal subjects. This is concerning for social workers because neoliberal and medicalisation discourses shape how women's mental health is represented in policy and responded to in practice. The current researches on modern calligraphy are mostly summaries of materials and contingency studies, lacking empirical studies. At the same time, the artistic characteristics of modern calligraphy require further clarification. Based on an analysis of the existing literature, this paper investigates the artistic characteristics of modern calligraphy practice through a qualitative research method, grounded theory, sorting out the constitutive dimensions of the artistic characteristics of modern calligraphy and establishing a theoretical model of the artistic characteristics of modern calligraphy. This study finds that the practice of modern calligraphy possesses six characteristics: diverse, cultural, social, expressive, design, and spiritual. The cross-media and multichannel artistic expression of modern calligraphy combine sociality and design, and the creative expression of modern calligraphy gives new connotations to the text, demonstrating the strong spiritual aspirations of contemporary people. Summary: The article presents findings of an ethnographic study carried out in Poland with homeless people living on the street and in a hostel. Interpretative orientation was used to ensure the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about their perspectives. The paper has two aims. First, it reconstructs the limits and risks of "(un)helpful help" and its impact on experiences of stigma. Second, it addresses how good intentions and policy efforts can have negative consequences, drawing on data from two separate research studies. The first research included seven male homeless people living on city streets. The second was carried out with 20 homeless people served by an agency working for homeless people. A qualitative methodology was employed for this critical ethnography, according to which the authors analyzed the data using a constructivist grounded theory approach. Findings: The research revealed a number of support measures which, instead of positively changing their situation from the participants' points of view, can exacerbate it by further stigmatizing homeless people with support based on helpers' stigmatizing approaches which can compound homeless people's negative experiences of "help." Applications: An understanding of the mechanisms of structural and systemic stigmatization from the participants' perspectives can help shift responsibility for their situation away from homeless people themselves toward society's responsibility as a whole. It highlights how there needs to be a change of consciousness and approaches within assistance systems, shifting the balance from an asymmetrical to a symmetrical relationship based on partnership and collaboration. Objectives: System-wide learning for patient safety is a core challenge for the health care sector, despite the prevalence of localised reporting and learning approaches. There is growing interest in how health care services could emulate other safety-critical sectors with the introduction of specialist safety investigation agencies to inform sector-wide safety. This paper reports on a study of the introduction and early operation of one such agency in the English health and care system. Methods: This was a qualitative interview study carried out between 2019 and 2021 and co-designed through a partnership between University researchers and the Executive Team from the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) to explore the organisational development of this 'first of type' organisation. The study involved interviews with 33 internal and external stakeholders and documentary analysis of HSIB reports. Results: The study findings highlight the organisational competencies and developmental challenges experienced in the early years of HSIB operations focusing on (i) independence and fit within the wider system; (ii) the selection and scope of investigations; (iii) the methodology and investigation approach; and (iv) the skill and competencies of investigators. Conclusions: This study offers practical learning to health care decision-makers about the importance of securing independence and integration, about the production of system-wide learning, the standardisation of robust methodologies and the support for a multidisciplinary specialist workforce. Objectives: Canada has one of the highest age-adjusted incidence and prevalence rates of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Large patient volumes and limited resources have created challenges concerning the quality of IBD care, but little is known about patients' experiences. This paper aimed to better understand patient-perceived barriers to IBD care. Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach was used for this study. Fourteen focus groups (with 63 total participants) were co-facilitated by a researcher and patient research partner across eight Canadian provinces in 2018. Patients diagnosed with IBD (>18 years of age) and their caregivers were purposefully recruited through Crohn's and Colitis Canada, gastroenterology clinics and communities, and national social media campaigns. Focus group sessions were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Most participants self-identified as being white and women. The analysis generated four key themes regarding patient-perceived barriers and gaps in access to IBD care: (1) gatekeepers and their lack of IBD knowledge, (2) expenses and time, (3) lack of holistic care, and (4) care that is not patient-centered. An additional four themes were generated on the topic of patient-perceived areas of health system improvement for IBD care: (1) direct access to care, (2) good care providers, (3) electronic records and passports, and (4) multidisciplinary care or an 'IBD dream team'. Conclusions: This research contributes to the limited global knowledge on patients' experiences accessing IBD care. It is valuable for the development of care plans and policies to target gaps in care. This paper investigates qualitatively the involvement of Human Resources (HR) professionals in executive remuneration governance within large UK public companies and similar organisations, considering the complex interplay of institutional, social and cognitive factors that influence executive pay decisions. Through interviews with senior HR professionals and focus groups involving mid-ranking HR professionals, the study identifies key themes, challenges and opportunities faced by HR in navigating the executive remuneration landscape. The study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the sociological and psychological dimensions of executive pay governance. The findings highlight the practical implications for HR professionals, emphasising the need for active engagement with diverse stakeholder groups, fostering a culture of openness and transparency to ensure that executive pay practices and associated processes align with organisational values and societal expectations, while underscoring the value of learning from diverse perspectives and practices. Industrial relations (IR) scholars emphasize the strategic choices of industrial relations actors to explain IR processes and outcomes. This article asserts that union member satisfaction is critical to realize unions' objectives and that the local union and work context shapes satisfaction. The authors study the 2019 national UAW strike against General Motors in two, at first sight, very similar union locals. Union members of one local approved the agreement while the other local rejected the agreement. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, the authors explain the different outcomes. Their analysis of a unique worker survey conducted during the strike shows that general member satisfaction was an important dimension for supporting the union's strategic choices. Qualitative case studies of the two locals highlight the importance of shares of transfer workers—"invisible divides"—when examining member satisfaction. Introduction: Aphasia, an acquired communication disorder, often results in restrictions to participation in daily activities leading to a decline in social networks, reduced quality of life, and decreased emotional well-being. Collaborative goal setting in rehabilitation settings is an important aspect of client-centered therapy for all clients; however, it is often ignored for people with aphasia due to lack of time, limited training in communication strategies, and a negative approach toward communicating with the person with aphasia. Method: This study used qualitative descriptive methodology to explore the experience of adults with aphasia with collaborative goal setting. Through interviews and observation, authors sought to gain an understanding of the facilitators and barriers to collaborative goal setting for people with aphasia. Participants were four adults with poststroke aphasia recruited from a university Aphasia Resource Center. Findings: Findings demonstrate that the environment and a client-centered approach support goal setting while too many adaptations and limited comprehension limit goal setting. Conclusion: The authors conclude that occupational therapy practitioners should support collaborative goal setting for people with aphasia through use of aphasia-friendly goal-setting processes, including adaptations to existing goal-setting measures as appropriate. While structural racism has profound impacts on adolescent health, little is known about how youth synthesize racialized experiences and work to dismantle systems of oppression. This article provides an overview of a Youth Participatory Action Research study that used Photovoice and community mapping to explore how structural violence, like racism, impacts the sexual and reproductive health of historically excluded youth as they navigate unjust socio-political landscapes. Youth participants used photography and community maps to identify how the experience of bias, profiling, and tokenism impacted their ability to navigate complex social systems. With youth voices prioritized, participants explored ways to address structural racism in their lives. The importance of co-creating opportunities with and for youth in critical reflection of their lived experience is emphasized. Through an Arts and Cultural in Public Health framework, we provide an analysis of the ways structural racism functions as a gendered racial project and fundamental cause of adolescent sexual and reproductive health inequities, while identifying pathways toward liberation in pursuit of health and well-being. Carers were disproportionately harmed in the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing an increased risk of contracting the virus, they continued in frontline roles in care services and acted as "shock absorbers" for their families and communities. In this article, we apply an intersectional lens to examine care work and the structural factors disadvantaging carers during COVID-19 through a comparative case study analysis of 16 low-, middle-, and high-income countries. Data on each country was collected through a qualitative framework during 2021–2022. We found that while carers everywhere were predominantly women with low incomes and precarious employment, other factors were at play in shaping their experiences. Moreover, government responses to mitigate the direct impact of the pandemic have created local and global disparities affecting those working in this sector. Our findings reveal how oppressive social structures such as race, class, caste, and migration status converged in contextually specific ways to shape the gendered nature of care within and between different countries. We call for a better understanding of the multiple axes of inequalities experienced by carers to inform crisis mitigations, coupled with long-term strategies to address social inequities in the care economy and to promote gender equality. Objective/Research Question: Research indicates that work-life integration is linked with career satisfaction for women administrators in higher education. This study focused on midlevel women leaders who are an essential component of higher education organizations and asked the question: how do mid-level women leaders in rural community colleges experience work-life integration? Method: Seeking to understand if the gendered ideal worker norm was prevalent in the work-life integration experiences of mid-level women leaders, we employed a qualitative design that drew upon phenomenological methods, to explore the work-life integration experiences of 12 mid-level women leaders in a rural community college system in the Northeastern United States. Results: Data gathered from both individual and focus group interviews with 12 participants yielded new knowledge about those participants' experiences and had implications for practice. Conclusions: Emergent themes in this study help to fill gaps in previous research by offering a tentative framework for understanding specific characteristics that may increase successful work-life integration for women mid-level leaders in a community college setting. Implications and recommendations are discussed. To understand unique individual experiences and institutional cultures, further research is suggested in the area of community college leadership. This article reports on the development of a local methodological innovation that supports the co-production of knowledge side-by-side with community-based research partners. In addition to conducting critical ethnography, Shea reports on how educators within an after-school community science program and a researcher developed practices to surface community educators' values, demystify the data analysis process, conduct collective analysis, and produce critical layers of data through storytelling. The discussion offers scholars interested in co-producing knowledge an imagination for how to revise existing and taken-for-granted research practices to shift knowledge production. Physical activity (PA) is beneficial for both the physical and psychological health of prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. This study identified and examined motives for PA in a cross-section of PCa survivors, including both men in remission and those receiving treatment in the form of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Sixteen PCa survivors from Auckland, New Zealand were individually interviewed. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach. Both groups of men were motivated to engage in PA post-diagnosis to obtain and experience the physical, mental, and cognitive health-related benefits associated with regular PA engagement. Past history of PA was also identified as a motive for current PA for men in remission. These findings provide important insight into how PCa survivors perceive the benefits of PA as a part of their cancer survivorship. Healthcare practitioners, exercise physiologists, and cancer support organizations can use this information to further improve PCa survivors' quality of life and overall cancer survivorship by better promoting PA to these individuals. Background: With an increased aging population, the number of individuals with dementia is expected to rise. The onset of dementia marks the start of negotiating access to a wide range of health and social services to find practical and emotional supports to deal with the management of changes and subsequent challenges that individual with dementia face. The toll of dementia goes beyond the health care system, affecting families and caregivers' quality of life. This places more pressure on family caregivers and health care institutions to provide services for affected individuals. It is important to understand the service needs of this population to enable them to live at home longer, contribute to society and maintain a positive quality of life. Aim: To increase understanding of how persons living at home with early dementia and their caregivers/significant others currently perceive and interact with health and community-based services and service providers. Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to explore the experiences of individuals with early dementia and care providers with health and community-based services using semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results: Participants included 16 individuals 50 years and older with mild/early dementia living at home, 22 informal caregivers of individuals with mild/early dementia, and 5 key community informants (community health nurses and social workers). Four thematic categories of barriers and two thematic categories of facilitators for access to and uptake of supportive services were identified. Five strategies to inform the development of an action plan to enhance access to, and uptake of, supportive services were determined. Conclusions: Early recognition of dementia through education and publicity enhanced public awareness, attention, and social inclusion with dementia-friendly neighborhoods and facilities need to be considered to achieve effective dementia-related services. Drawing from a conceptual framework grounded in Black critical theories, this qualitative case study explored the youth knowledge that two Black Male social studies teacher-coaches serving in urban Catholic high schools acquired through Black counterpublics to reconceptualize the ontological limitation of Black existence. Findings demonstrated that it was within civic spaces generated within the Black family and community that participants acquired the socio-cultural knowledge to see through antiBlack forms of White projection. In this research article, the authors examine the intersections of culturally sustaining pedagogy and critical family engagement to explore the possibilities for equitable family-school partnerships in urban schools. Based on the common values of trusting and caring relationships and power disruption within those fields, as well as data from a multi-year qualitative study of teachers and their relationships with students' families, the authors introduce the framework of teacher-family solidarity. The framework challenges traditional conceptions of parent-teacher relationships, and the supporting narratives of teachers and parent/caregivers illustrate that teacher-family solidarity should become an indispensable part of culturally sustaining pedagogy and practice. This longitudinal multi-case study explored four early career teachers' attempts to differentiate instruction in schools that varied in their level of support for this pedagogical approach. It offered an in-depth examination of the experiences of novices who learned about the pedagogical tools of differentiation with depth and fidelity through the same preservice instruction, developed similar commitments to implementing them, and attempted to implement them in contrasting inservice settings. A large and rich data corpus collected across 4 years included participant interviews, observations of participants' teaching practices, classroom artifacts, and interviews with participants' mentors. Findings illustrated novices' contrasting multi-year learning trajectories related to differentiation embedded within varied school settings. They also revealed the substantive role novices' shifting visions of the enactment of practice played in appropriating differentiation's pedagogical tools during their early careers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth lived with family members in forced togetherness. Using the Texas Queer Youth COVID Study, a longitudinal qualitative study of 26 LGBTQ youth in Texas, we argue that the social conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted relationships between LGBTQ youth and their family in dynamic ways, including cultivating intimacy and magnifying new or existing conflicts. LGBTQ youth could not use their preferred strategies of avoidance to handle relatives' conservative pandemic politics and conspiracy theories. For Latinx LGBTQ youth, the intensified familism required during the shelter-in-place of the pandemic cultivated more intimacy but also became a justification for distance for youth trying to avoid homophobic relatives. Qualitative research methods are deemed best suited to exploring novel phenomena and generating new concepts. Their potential to reevaluate existing theorizing, however, is underestimated. Qualitative restudies that return to the data and settings on which the original theories were built are a well-established tradition in other disciplines (e.g., history, sociology, and anthropology), but have received little recognition in management and organization studies. We introduce qualitative restudies as a powerful means to improve theorizing by revising or challenging theories that have become outdated or obsolete and establishing transferability and longevity of findings and interpretations. We provide a typology of qualitative restudy designs drawing on an integrative review of literature in management, strategy, and the social sciences and humanities. We highlight the main design and ethical considerations for researchers in undertaking a restudy. We argue for the strengths of restudies as lying in their possibilities for retheorizing, above and beyond verifying or updating prior studies. Restudies draw on the strengths of in-depth qualitative work to uncover how interpretations and theorizing are shaped by methodological traditions, historical contexts, existing societal structures, and researcher backgrounds. Despite the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, public hesitancy about receiving vaccination remains strong among disproportionately affected populations in the United States. To design more locally and culturally appropriate strategies, research is needed to explore the qualitative characteristics of vaccine hesitancy in these populations. Thus, we conducted in-depth interviews with 19 Indigenous and 20 rural participants and utilized a grounded theory approach to identify factors associated with their COVID-19 vaccine decision making. Wariness regarding safety of vaccines, resignation over the quality of available health care, and a historical mistrust of government-led interventions influenced vaccine rejection for indigenous participants. Rural participants remained divided on the perceived threat and consequences of COVID-19 and the efficacy and safety of the vaccines. The influence of friends and family members impacted vaccine hesitancy, as did discussions with healthcare providers when discussions were perceived to be respectful, sensitive, and non-judgmental. Objective: The goal of this study was to partner with community organizations to understand the research experiences of communities who speak languages other than English (LOE). Methods: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews in Spanish, Nepali, Mandarin, French, or Kizigua with LOE community members and community leaders who completed recruitment and data collection. Audio-recordings of the interviews were transcribed and translated. We conducted qualitative coding using a mixed deductive-inductive analysis approach and thematic analyses using three rounds of affinity clustering. This study occurred in partnership with an established community-academic collaboration. Results: Thirty community members and six community leaders were interviewed. 83% of LOE participants were born outside of the US and most participants (63%) had never participated in a prior research study. Six themes emerged from this work. Many participants did not understand the concept of research, but those that did thought that inclusion of LOE communities is critical for equity. Even when research was understood as a concept, it was often inaccessible to LOE individuals, particularly because of the lack of language services. When LOE participants engaged in research, they did not always understand their participation. Participants thought that improving research trust was essential and recommended partnering with community organizations and disseminating research results to the community. Conclusion: This study's results can serve as an important foundation for researchers seeking to include LOE communities in future research to be more inclusive and scientifically rigorous. For decades, policymakers in the U.S. have leveraged accountability policy as a governing tool to lift school performance and close the achievement gap. Accountability become so widespread that it arguably became a "policy paradigm" with the passage of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act in 2002. Yet after just 13 years of implementation, policymakers replaced NCLB with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which gave states more control over the policy tools and mechanisms to regulate school improvement. This qualitative project captured the evolution of the accountability paradigm by studying the policy ideas and moral narratives of policy elites in California and Tennessee during the transition period between NCLB and ESSA. The study finds that interview participants legitimized the core design features of ESSA, but attached their underlying worldviews and beliefs to the flexible design features, which created unique accountability models with different institutional arrangements. Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKi) are a major concern within military forces, significantly reducing productivity and military readiness. Within the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), MSKi are the most common cause of delayed deployment of members. There is a lack of research specifically focused on the experiences of postpartum CAF members and their perceived risk of MSKi. Drawing on Giles et al.'s equity-centered 4 E's injury prevention framework (education, engineering, enforcement, and equity), we highlight that individuals who experience pregnancy may perceive themselves to be at heightened risk of injury due to sex and gender-based inequities in their workplace. This qualitative research draws on data from focus groups with 32 individuals who experienced pregnancy while serving in the CAF. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we identified the following findings related to perceived increased risk of MSKi: (a) nature of relevant physiological and anatomical changes in pregnancy, (b) unreasonable pressures to return to work at peak physical readiness, and (c) perceived challenges associated with accessing resources and services to support physical recovery. There are opportunities to improve access to injury prevention resources and support for pregnant and postpartum CAF members to reduce rates of MSKi. Background: Advance care planning can improve patient and family outcomes; however, minoritised ethnic communities experience access barriers. Co-production offers a way to design culturally appropriate information and support, but evidence is needed to understand its implementation in palliative care. Aim: To explore and describe how two charities used co-production to develop and deliver community-based advance care planning workshops for South Asian elders. Design: Workshops were co-produced by two charities. In parallel, a multi-component qualitative study was conducted comprising workshop observations, semi-structured interviews with charity staff and focus groups with workshop participants, facilitated by community co-researchers in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Setting/participants: Four workshops were held in a London (UK) community setting (each with 5–30 participants); four interviews were conducted with charity staff members, and three focus groups with 16 workshop participants. Results: We describe three main themes: Co-production in action: organic origins and trusted foundations; Co-production processes embedded in equal partnership; and Impact of the workshops. Fundamental to co-production processes was the community-led approach of the local charity, the trust of the local South Asian community and the relationship between the charities, including transparent communication and mutual respect. The workshops were reported to be useful and enjoyable, engendering a sense of agency and connection and helped disseminate awareness and knowledge through the community, benefitting the wider system. Scholars are charged with knowledge advancement by conducting relevant research. Academic researchers rely on the peer-review journal system to evaluate the quality and relevancy of their work. Despite its value, the current review system is flawed and sometimes results in fragmented knowledge formation. Some scholars, including Kouzes and Posner (K&P), publish research in books more accessible to practitioners. The impact of foregoing the traditional journal publication process on current knowledge is unclear. To explore this question, we used leadership scholarship as a case study and examined how K&P's leader credibility conceptualization, primarily shared in practitioner-focused books, was integrated into peer-review literature knowledge. More specifically, we compared K&P's definition with the conceptual definition which emerged from a comprehensive review of leader credibility definitions contained in peer-reviewed literature. The aim of this study is to provide a phenomenological description of the art experience and by doing so, explaining why art is generally associated with an emotional response, but talked about in cognitive terms. The study is based on a microgenetic experiment in which the informants, prior to an interview, encounter a work of art by the American artist Eric Orr. The work consists of a pitch-black space and provides optimal conditions for a microgenetic study with an actual work of art, not a reproduction, which are typically used in microgenetic studies. The study shows a microgenesis in which pure sensation gives rise to an emotional response without any cognitive inference, and only after the emotional response, cognitive functions such as exploration, contextualization, and comprehension take over in the order mentioned. Background: Preferences of patients with advanced cancer are well studied in Western countries but less so in Asian communities where end-of-life discussions can be seen as taboo. This may lead to patients receiving care that is incongruent with their wishes as their disease progress. It is important for healthcare providers to have a better understanding of patients' experiences and preferences especially in a multicultural country like Malaysia with its diverse beliefs and values to facilitate better planning for future medical care. Objectives: To explore the experiences and preferences of Malaysian patients with advanced cancer. Design: Qualitative study of semi-structured interviews with thematic analysis. Setting/subjects: Purposive sampling of 19 patients with Stage 4 cancer recruited from inpatient and outpatient settings in National Cancer Institute Malaysia. Results: Three major themes emerged in the exploration of patients' experiences and care preferences in facing advanced cancer namely: 1) Dealing with poor prognosis 2) Spirituality as a source of strength and 3) Enablers of advance care planning. Conclusion: This study highlighted the preference for healthcare providers to be culturally sensitive during end-of-life care discussion and the need for improved spiritual care for Malaysian patients with advanced cancer. Healthcare workers (HCWs) experience occupational stressors that negatively impact emotional well-being and exacerbate turnover intentions. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the resultant acute care turnover rates have reached an all-time high. In addition, occupational stressors lead to psychological stress, including moral distress, defined as the dissonance between perceiving what the right course of action is and encountering an obstacle to acting accordingly. This qualitative descriptive study explored the perceptions of patient-facing HCWs in acute care hospital settings regarding the workplace stressors they encountered and the role of hospital-based chaplains in addressing emotional well-being and stress with 33 interviews. Findings suggest that HCW frequently experience work-related moral distress and seek relief by interacting with hospital chaplains. Chaplain care, common in American healthcare facilities for the spiritual care of patients, is an easily accessible resource to HCWs. Facilitating chaplain–HCW interactions may be an effective strategy for responding to moral distress and improving healthcare workers' well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Older adults with bipolar disorder experience distinct challenges compared to younger age groups with bipolar disorder. They potentially require adaptations to the care they receive. This study aimed to explore experiences of care and changing care needs in older adults with bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder (aged ≥60) were recruited through three NHS Trusts in the North West of England, charity organisations, a confidential university participant database, and social media. Participants completed single time-point biographical narrative interviews, which were analysed using narrative analysis. Sixteen participants' accounts led to the creation of four themes: (1) 'Navigating the disruption caused by diagnosis'; (2) 'The removal of services that provided hope'; (3) 'Later life: We are on our own now'; and (4) 'Changing care needs in later life: We still need support'. The care needs of older adults with bipolar disorder appear to change over time, and services often fail to offer adequate, tailored care for this group at present. Minimal research has explored the personal experience of burnout in doctors from any medical speciality. Consequently, we aimed to provide a relatable description and understanding of this globally recognised problem. We employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of face-to-face interviews with seven general practitioners (GPs) in Northern Ireland, having selected interviewees best able to speak about burnout. We sought to understand how these GPs understood their burnout experiences. Our participants' continuous work involved more than their busy weekdays and also working on supposedly off evenings and weekends. In addition, draining intrusive thoughts of work filled most, if not all, of their other waking moments. There was no respite. Work was 'always there.' Being constantly busy, they had no time to think or attend to patients as doctors. Instead, participants were going through the motions like GP automatons. Their effectiveness, efficiency, and caring were failing, while their interactions with patients had changed as they tried to conserve their now-drained energy and empathy. There was no time left for their families or themselves. They now "existed" to continuously work rather than "living" their previous, more balanced lives that at one time included enjoying being a doctor. Worryingly, participants were struggling, isolated, and vulnerable, yet unwilling to speak to someone they trusted. We intend our burnout narrative to promote discussion between medical colleagues and assist in its recognition by GPs and other doctors. Our findings warn against working excessively, prioritising work ahead of family and oneself, and self-isolation rather than seeking necessary support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Belgium, adults with psychiatric disorders can opt for euthanasia under strict conditions. The impact of these euthanasia trajectories on close relatives remains insufficiently studied. This research is the first in Belgium to explore the concrete experiences and support needs of relatives involved in psychiatric-based euthanasia trajectories by means of an in-depth interview study. The interviews with 18 relatives were conducted from March to May 2023 and analyzed using inductive thematic coding. The results reveal the complex and ambivalent emotional and cognitive experiences among relatives. Experiences with euthanasia trajectories varied from positive to negative, marked by shared feelings of surrealism and unreality. This included the farewell process that relatives go through, regardless of whether euthanasia was carried out. While the desired level of involvement varied, everyone sought some degree of recognition and understanding for their complex position during the euthanasia procedure, aiding in a better comprehension and contextualization of the request. The level of actual involvement and support depended on the stage of the euthanasia request, their social network, and the reasons behind the request. There was a demand for transparent communication, more emotional and practical support, and assistance in coping with the emotionally charged process. Specific attention is needed for the emotional and cognitive rollercoaster, even if euthanasia is not ultimately pursued. Future research should employ a longitudinal design to gain deeper insights into relatives' fluctuating experiences and support needs throughout euthanasia trajectories. There is an increasing emphasis on transdisciplinary research to address the complex challenges faced by health systems. However, research has not adequately explored how members of transdisciplinary research teams perceive, understand, and promote transdisciplinary collaboration. As such, there is a need to investigate collaborative behaviors, knowledge, and the impacts of transdisciplinary research. To address this gap, we conducted a longitudinal realist evaluation of transdisciplinary collaboration within a 5-year National Health and Medical Research Council–funded Center of Research Excellence in Transdisciplinary Frailty Research. The current study aimed to explore researchers' perceptions and promotion of transdisciplinary research specifically within the context of frailty research using qualitative methods. Participants described transdisciplinary research as a collaborative and integrative approach that involves individuals from various disciplines working together to tackle complex research problems. However, participants often used terms like interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary interchangeably, indicating that a shared understanding of transdisciplinary research is needed. Barriers to transdisciplinary collaboration included time constraints, geographical distance, and entrenched collaboration patterns. To overcome these challenges, participants suggested implementing strategies such as creating a shared vision and goals, establishing appropriate collaboration systems and structures, and role modeling collaborative behaviors, values, and attitudes. Our findings underscore the need for practical knowledge in developing transdisciplinary collaboration and leadership skills across different career stages. In the absence of formal training, sustained and immersive programs that connect researchers with peers, educators, and role models from various disciplines and provide experiential learning opportunities, may be valuable in fostering successful transdisciplinary collaboration. Glucocorticoids are commonly used in the management of patients with hematological and solid malignancies. However, their use may be associated with impaired glycemic metabolism and increased treatment-related morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a nurse-led model of care (MOC) for screening and managing glucocorticoid-induced hyperglycemia (GIH) in non-diabetic patients requiring high-dose glucocorticoid (HDG) therapies, as well as patients' and health professionals' experiences with the MOC. This study was a single-site feasibility study. Patients with hematological or oncological malignancies who were >18 years of age, receiving a chemotherapy regimen including HDGs, had no prior diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes, and were not at the end of life were considered eligible for this study. Participants were recruited from a district hospital's Cancer Centre in Australia. All consenting participants were screened for diabetes and were provided with a blood glucose meter to monitor their blood glucose levels (BGLs) four times a day on the days of glucocorticoid therapy (GT) plus one extra day following GT, for the first four cycles of their treatment, to screen for the presence of GIH. Feasibility and acceptability were assessed using rates of consent, study completion, and staff and patient surveys. Forty-eight percent (35/74) of patients approached consented to participate in the study and had screening tests for preexisting diabetes. None were diagnosed with diabetes. Six out of 35 patients withdrew, and 10/29 patients did not complete the recommended BGL monitoring. Thirteen percent (4/29) of patients developed GIH. The most common reasons for non-participation and study withdrawal were related to the self-monitoring of BGLs. While clinical stakeholders found the MOC feasible and acceptable, the results of this study suggest that alternative methods for encouraging self-monitoring of BGL and monitoring the presence of GIH during high-dose chemotherapy need to be explored to address issues associated with adherence and sustainability.
