The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's (NIAAA) definition of alcohol use disorder (AUD) recovery stipulates two criteria: remission from DSM-5 AUD and cessation of heavy drinking. Importantly, these criteria allow for consideration of nonabstinent alcohol treatment outcomes. However, researchers have yet to assess potential predictors of the NIAAA recovery outcome. The current study examined associations between mental health and coping predictors of NIAAA recovery status in an AUD treatment sample. At baseline (BL) and end-of-treatment (EOT) research interviews in a clinical trial, participants (N = 118) completed questionnaires assessing alcohol dependence, mental health, and confidence levels in reducing heavy drinking, as well as alcohol use and DSM-5 AUD symptom endorsement. Logistic regression models tested the associations between chosen predictors and the odds of achieving NIAAA recovery. Twenty-four percent of individuals (n = 28) met both criteria for NIAAA recovery at EOT. Higher levels of BL state anxiety and anxiety sensitivity predicted lower odds of achieving NIAAA recovery, while greater confidence to reduce heavy drinking predicted increased odds of NIAAA recovery. Background and Hypothesis With increasing recognition of the importance of cognitive health for recovery in people with psychosis, questions arise as to how to implement cognitive health services in large systems of care. This paper describes the implementation of cognitive health services in OnTrackNY (OTNY), a network of clinics delivering a Coordinated Specialty Care treatment model for early psychosis, with the goal of documenting the processes, challenges, and useful adaptations. Study Design In 2018, OTNY piloted a Cognitive Health Toolkit for implementation across 18 affiliated clinics. The toolkit intended to identify the cognitive health needs of individuals early in the course of psychosis and to integrate cognitive health into the vocabulary of wellness and recovery. Implementation involved creating mechanisms for staff training and support to, in turn, help participants improve how they use cognitive skills in daily life. Study Results The toolkit was disseminated to all 28 OTNY programs throughout New York state by 2023. When simple assessment and decision-making tools were embedded in routine care practices, the majority of participants identified that improving memory, attention, and critical thinking skills would be helpful. Consistently, about 70% of those asked wanted to learn more about how to better their cognitive health. Conclusions Cognitive health services can be implemented in large systems of care that provide a multi-level system of implementation supports. Organizational facilitators of implementation include a training program to educate about cognitive health and the delivery of cognitive health interventions, and embedded quality assurance monitoring and improvement activities. Background Malnutrition is a public health problem that affects physical and psychosocial well-being. It manifests as a rapid deterioration in nutritional status and bilateral edema due to inadequate food intake or illness. Methods This study is a retrospective cohort of 1208 children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in Sofala Province from 2018 to 2022. It includes hospitalized children aged 6–59 months with SAM and related complications. The dependent variable is recovery, and the independent variables include age, sex of the child, vomiting, dehydration, hypoglycemia, nutritional edema and anthropometry. Survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan–Meier method, and bivariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed. Results The crude analysis revealed significant factors for nutritional recovery in children with SAM, including age, weight, height, malaria, diarrhea and dehydration. Children under 24 months had a 28% lower likelihood of recovery. Weight below 6.16 kg decreased the likelihood by 2%, and height above 71.1 cm decreased it by 20%. Conversely, malaria, diarrhea and dehydration increased the likelihood of recovery. However, after adjustment, only diarrhea remained a significant predictor of nutritional recovery. Aims Cardiac metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging provides prognostic information in patients with heart failure (HF). Recently, the trajectory of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) has been a focus in patients with reduced LVEF admitted for acute decompensated HF (ADHF). We sought to investigate the prognostic value of follow-up cardiac MIBG imaging in ADHF patients with reduced LVEF in relation to LVEF trajectory. Methods and results We prospectively studied 145 ADHF patients with a reduced LVEF of <40%. The cardiac MIBG heart-to-mediastinum ratio (the late HMR) was measured on the delayed image at discharge and at the 6-month follow-up (6FUP). At 6 months after discharge, 54 (37%) patients had complete recovery of LVEF ≥50% (HFcorEF), and 43 (30%) patients had partial recovery of LVEF 40–50% (HFparEF), while the remaining 48 (33%) patients had no functional recovery of LVEF (HFnorEF). The late HMR at the 6FUP in HFcorEF patients was significantly greater than that in HFparEF and HFnorEF patients. During a follow-up period of 4.3 ± 2.6 years, 43 patients had cardiac events, defined as a composite of readmission for worsening HF and cardiac death. Patients with a lower late HMR at the 6FUP had a greater risk of cardiac events than those with a higher late HMR at the 6FUP in the group with recovered LVEF, especially HFparEF, which was not observed in the HFnorEF subgroup. Aims Post-sternotomy movement strategies for adults should be an evidence-informed approach and support a safe, independent return to daily activity. Recent new movement strategies have emerged. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and summarize the available evidence for post-sternotomy movement strategies in adults. Methods and results The electronic databases searched included MEDLINE, Embase, Sport Discus, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and PEDro. The search did not have a date limit. After 2405 duplicates were removed, 2978 records were screened, and 12 were included; an additional 2 studies were identified through reference searching for a total of 14 included studies. A data extraction table was used, and the findings are summarized in a tabular and narrative form. Three post-sternotomy movement strategies were identified in the literature: sternal precautions (SP), modified SP, and Keep Your Move in the Tube (KYMITT™). The authors suggested that the practice of SP was based on expert opinion and not founded in evidence. However, the evidence from the identified articles suggested that new movement strategies are safe and allow patients to choose an increased level of activity that promotes improved functional status and confidence. Conclusion More prospective cohort studies and multi-centred randomized control trials are needed; however, the current evidence suggests that modified SP and KYMITT™ are as safe as SP and can promote a patient-centred approach. Background Infectious conjunctivitis affects 1 in 8 children annually, resulting in high ophthalmic antibiotic prescribing and absenteeism from childcare and school. We aimed to quantify the cost-effectiveness and annual savings of 3 evidence-based approaches to conjunctivitis management and return to childcare and school compared to usual care. Methods Using a decision analytic model from a societal perspective over a 1-year time horizon, we conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of 3 management strategies for children aged 6 months to 17 years with non-severe conjunctivitis compared to usual care in the United States. Strategies accounted for rate of transmission. Strategies included (1) refraining from prescribing ophthalmic antibiotics for non-severe conjunctivitis, (2) allowing children without systemic symptoms to attend childcare and school, (3) and the combined approach of refraining from prescribing ophthalmic antibiotics and allowing children without systemic symptoms to attend childcare and school. Results The estimated annual expenditure for pediatric conjunctivitis was $1.95 billion. Usual care was the most expensive ($212.73/episode), followed by refraining from ophthalmic antibiotic prescribing ($199.92) and allowing children without systemic symptoms to attend childcare and school ($140.18). The combined approach was the least costly ($127.38). Disutility was similar between approaches (quality-adjusted life days 0.271 vs 0.274). Refraining from antibiotic prescribing and the combination approach were dominant compared to usual care. The combined approach resulted in an estimated $783 million annual savings and 1.6 million ophthalmic antibiotic courses averted. Conclusions Conjunctivitis poses an economic burden that could be reduced by refraining from ophthalmic antibiotic use and allowing children without systemic symptoms to remain at school or childcare. Aims To explore the effect or potential effect of alcohol marketing in people with an alcohol use disorder, in recovery from an alcohol use disorder, and hazardous and harmful drinkers. Methods Relevant literature was identified by searching Medline (OVID), EMBASE (OVID), and PsycINFO (OVID) and relevant websites. Both quantitative and qualitative studies were eligible for inclusion. A narrative approach was used to synthesize the findings. Results The review included 10 studies. Two quantitative and three qualitative studies focused on participants recovering from an alcohol use disorder and five quantitative studies on those with hazardous or harmful consumption levels of alcohol. The effect of alcohol advertising on alcohol use was only assessed in one study, a small experimental study of young adult heavy drinkers, which found no significant association. Studies looking at other outcomes found that people with or at risk of alcohol problems were likely to notice alcohol advertisements and find them appealing, and that advertisements may have an effect on positive alcohol-related emotions and cognitions. Among people in recovery from an alcohol use disorder, findings suggested that there could be an effect on craving, and that alcohol marketing may be perceived to trigger a desire to drink. Conclusions Alcohol marketing is likely to have an effect on alcohol consumption in people with, or at increased risk of, an alcohol problem. Studies have also found that alcohol marketing is perceived to act as a trigger by people in recovery from alcohol problems. Summary A rapid review explored the effect of alcohol marketing in people with an alcohol use disorder, in recovery from an alcohol use disorder, and hazardous and harmful drinkers. Background and Hypotheses Affective recovery, operationalized as the time needed for affect to return to baseline levels after daily stressors, may be a putative momentary representation of resilience. This study aimed to investigate affective recovery in positive and negative affect across subclinical and clinical stages of psychosis and whether this is associated with exposure to childhood trauma (sexual, physical, and emotional abuse). Study Design We used survival analysis to predict the time-to-recovery from a daily event-related stressor in a pooled sample of 3 previously conducted experience sampling studies including 113 individuals with first-episode psychosis, 162 at-risk individuals, and 94 controls. Study Results Negative affective recovery (ie, return to baseline following an increase in negative affect) was longer in individuals with first-episode psychosis compared with controls (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.71, 95% confidence interval [CI; 1.03, 2.61], P  = .04) and in at-risk individuals exposed to high vs low levels of emotional abuse (HR = 1.31, 95% CI [1.06, 1.62], P  = .01). Positive affective recovery (ie, return to baseline following a decrease in positive affect) did not differ between groups and was not associated with childhood trauma. Conclusions Our results give first indications that negative affective recovery may be a putative momentary representation of resilience across stages of psychosis and may be amplified in at-risk individuals with prior experiences of emotional abuse. Understanding how affective recovery contributes to the development of psychosis may help identify new targets for prevention and intervention to buffer risk or foster resilience in daily life. While the origins of two of Kraepelin's three subtypes of dementia praecox (DP), catatonic and hebephrenic, are well understood, no similar clear narrative exists for his concepts of paranoia and paranoid DP, which require a consideration of both German and French sources. An important milestone in the French literature is the massive 524 page monograph entitled "Le Délire Des Persécutions" published in 1871 by Henri Legrand du Saulle which contained extensive, clinically detailed descriptions of a wide range of cases with prominent, organized persecutory delusions. Many of his cases reported auditory hallucinations (AH), and some bizarre, Schneiderian delusions. The delusional content could evolve to include prominent somatic and/or grandiose themes. Using a symptomatic diagnostic framework, Legrand du Saulle proposed that this syndrome represented an independent "species" of mental illness. He sought to give a voice to the affected individuals, including a chapter devoted entirely to their writings. He described several clinically fascinating features of such patients including how often they moved residence to unsuccessfully flee their persecutors and how delusional beliefs could be communicated to spouses and relatives. Unlike Kraepelin, he was little interested in their course of illness or rates of deterioration, except to note that recoveries occurred in 20% of cases. The clinical richness of this work substantially exceeded that in the contemporaneous German literature. Most of the cases described by du Saulle would fit easily into the two major non-affective delusional syndromes articulated 28 years later in Kraepelin's famous 6th edition of his textbook: paranoia and paranoid DP. Background Although the long-term consequences of the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are yet to be fully comprehended, a syndrome symptomatically akin to the COVID-19 disease has been defined, for children and adolescents, in February 2023 by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 'post COVID-19 condition' (PCC). Potential consequences of COVID-19 that affect developmental milestones in children and adolescents should be comprehended in their magnitude and duration. The aim is to investigate the most common symptoms and predictors or risk factors for pediatric PCC. Methods In this umbrella review, the population of interest was defined as children and adolescents from 0 to 19 years old presenting PCC symptoms as defined by the WHO in the International Classification of Diseases. The intervention considered was general follow-up activity to monitor the patients' recovery status. No comparator was chosen, and the outcomes were symptoms of PCC and predictors or risk factors of developing PCC. Methodological quality, risk of bias and the level of overlap between studies were assessed. A random-effects meta-analytic synthesis of respective estimates with inverse variance study weighting was carried out, for the primary studies included by the reviews retrieved, regarding predictors or risk factors reported. Results We identified six eligible systematic reviews, five with meta-analyses, from three databases. The most common symptoms reported were fatigue and respiratory difficulties; female sex and older age were the most reported factors associated with the development of pediatric PCC. Objectives The present research examined associations between stroke and long-term trajectories of loneliness. Methods We conducted secondary analyses in 3 large representative panel studies of adults 50 years and older in the United States, Europe, and Israel: the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA; analytic N  = 14,992); the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE; analytic N  = 103,782); and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; analytic N  = 22,179). Within each sample, we used discontinuous growth curve modeling to estimate loneliness trajectories across adulthood and the impact of stroke on loneliness trajectories. Results Across all 3 samples, participants who experienced stroke reported higher levels of loneliness relative to participants who did not experience stroke. In ELSA and HRS (but not SHARE), loneliness levels were higher after stroke onset relative to before stroke onset. Discussion This research adds to a growing body of evidence demonstrating elevated loneliness among stroke survivors and highlights the need for interventions to increase social connectedness after stroke. Context Several meta-analyses have been conducted on the effect of nutritional interventions on various factors related to muscle damage. However, the strength of the evidence and its clinical significance are unclear. Objectives This umbrella review aimed to provide an evidence-based overview of nutritional interventions for exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Data sources PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science were systematically searched up to May 2022. Data Extraction Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials investigating nutritional interventions' effects on recovery following EIMD were included. The certainty of the evidence was rated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Results Fifty-three randomized controlled trial meta-analyses were included, evaluating 24 nutritional interventions on 10 different outcomes. The results revealed a significant effect of hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation and l -carnitine supplementation for reducing postexercise creatine kinase; HMB supplementation for reducing lactate dehydrogenase; branched-chain amino acids and leaf extract supplementation for reducing the delayed onset of muscle soreness; and l -carnitine, curcumin, ginseng, polyphenols, and anthocyanins for reducing muscle soreness, all with moderate certainty of evidence. Conclusions Supplementation with HMB, l -carnitine, branched-chain amino acids, curcumin, ginseng, leaf extract, polyphenols, and anthocyanins showed favorable effects on some EIMD-related outcomes. This prospective study explores health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), event-related distress (IES-R), and depression (CES-D) after cardiac surgery during three COVID-19 lockdowns imposed in the UK. Overall, 253 patients (Lockdown 1 n = 196; 2 n = 45; 3 n = 12) completed the above-mentioned questionnaires at baseline, 1 week after discharge, and 6 weeks and 6 and 12 months after surgery. While EQ-5D-5L values were similar across all cohorts, those who underwent surgery during Lockdowns 2 and 3 had higher IES-R scores at 1 year and higher IES-R and CES-D baseline scores, respectively. Background After an acute infection, older persons may benefit from geriatric rehabilitation (GR). Objectives This study describes the recovery trajectories of post-COVID-19 patients undergoing GR and explores whether frailty is associated with recovery. Design Multicentre prospective cohort study. Setting 59 GR facilities in 10 European countries. Participants Post-COVID-19 patients admitted to GR between October 2020 and October 2021. Methods Patients' characteristics, daily functioning (Barthel index; BI), quality of life (QoL; EQ-5D-5L) and frailty (Clinical Frailty Scale; CFS) were collected at admission, discharge, 6 weeks and 6 months after discharge. We used linear mixed models to examine the trajectories of daily functioning and QoL. Results 723 participants were included with a mean age of 75 (SD: 9.91) years. Most participants were pre-frail to frail (median [interquartile range] CFS 6.0 [5.0–7.0]) at admission. After admission, the BI first steeply increased from 11.31 with 2.51 (SE 0.15, P  < 0.001) points per month and stabilised around 17.0 (quadratic slope: −0.26, SE 0.02, P  < 0.001). Similarly, EQ-5D-5L first steeply increased from 0.569 with 0.126 points per month (SE 0.008, P  < 0.001) and stabilised around 0.8 (quadratic slope: −0.014, SE 0.001, P  < 0.001). Functional recovery rates were independent of frailty level at admission. QoL was lower at admission for frailer participants, but increased faster, stabilising at almost equal QoL values for frail, pre-frail and fit patients. Conclusions Post-COVID-19 patients admitted to GR showed substantial recovery in daily functioning and QoL. Background and Hypothesis Racial discrimination and public stigma toward Black individuals living with schizophrenia create disparities in treatment-seeking and engagement. Brief, social-contact-based video interventions efficaciously reduce stigma. It remains unclear whether including racial identity experiences in video narrative yields greater stigma reduction. We hypothesized that we would replicate findings showing sustained stigma reduction in video-intervention groups vs control and that Black participants would show greater stigma reduction and emotional engagement than non-Black participants only for a racial-insights video presenting a Black protagonist. Study Design Recruiting using a crowdsourcing platform, we randomized 1351 participants ages 18–30 to (a) brief video-based intervention, (b) racial-insights-focused brief video, or (c) non-intervention control, with baseline, post-intervention, and 30-day follow-up assessments. In 2-minute videos, a young Black protagonist described symptoms, personal struggles, and recovery from schizophrenia, with or without mentioning race-related experiences. Study Results A 3 × 3 ANOVA showed a significant group-by-time interaction for total scores of each of five stigma-related domains: social distance, stereotyping, separateness, social restriction, and perceived recovery (all P  < .001). Linear mixed modeling showed a greater reduction in stigma from baseline to post-intervention among Black than non-Black participants in the racial insights video group for the social distance and social restriction domains. Conclusions This randomized controlled trial replicated and expanded previous findings, showing the anti-stigma effects of a brief video tailored to race-related experiences. This underscores the importance of personalized, culturally relevant narratives, especially for marginalized groups who, more attuned to prejudice and discrimination, may particularly value identification and solidarity. Background Dengue cases continue to rise and can overwhelm healthcare systems during outbreaks. In dengue, neutrophil mediators, soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and olfactomedin 4, and mast cell mediators, chymase and tryptase, have not been measured longitudinally across the dengue phases. The utility of these proteins as prognostic biomarkers for severe dengue has also not been assessed in an older adult population. Methods We prospectively enrolled 99 adults with dengue—40 dengue fever, 46 dengue with warning signs and 13 severe dengue, along with 30 controls. Plasma levels of suPAR, olfactomedin 4, chymase and tryptase were measured at the febrile, critical and recovery phases in dengue patients. Results The suPAR levels were significantly elevated in severe dengue compared to the other dengue severities and controls in the febrile (P <.001), critical (P <.001), and recovery (P =.005) phases. In the febrile phase, suPAR was a prognostic biomarker of severe dengue, with an AUROC of 0.82. Using a cutoff derived from Youden's index (5.4 ng/mL) and an estimated prevalence of severe dengue (16.5%) in our healthcare institution, the sensitivity was 71.4% with a specificity of 87.9% in the febrile phase, and the positive and negative predictive values were 54.7% and 95.8%, respectively. Olfactomedin 4 was elevated in dengue patients but not in proportion to disease severity in the febrile phase (P =.04) There were no significant differences in chymase and tryptase levels between dengue patients and controls. Aims The central aim of this study was to determine whether intentional, voluntary alcoholics anonymous (AA) participation showed any independent association with affect, over and above that which has been observed in association with other recovery-related behaviors, such as abstinence, among individuals with a history of alcohol use disorder. Additionally, we sought to determine the nature of the affective changes associated with specific dimensions of AA participation (i.e. meeting   attendance , fellowship   involvement , 12-step   work). Methods Thirty abstinent alcohol use disorder individuals were recruited and evaluated. Multivariate linear regressions were used to examine associations between dimensions of AA participation, measured using the Multidimensional Mutual-Help Assessment Scale and standardized measures of affective experiences, including the Profile of Mood States, Subjective Happiness Scale, and the Twelve Promises Scale. Results and Conclusions Increase in AA participation was associated with higher positive affective experiences. These associations were observed independently with AA meeting   attendance and fellowship   involvement , but not 12-step work. This study's findings suggest that greater AA meeting   attendance and fellowship   involvement are correlated with enhancements in the meta-emotional experience of personal meaningfulness. This study extends evidence on AA-related changes by considering affective improvements as a primary clinical outcome, thereby laying the foundation for subsequent, more comprehensive research into the relationship between dimensions of AA participation and recovery-related affective changes. This article deals with the results of a qualitative, multiple-case study that examined the impact of peer support on motivation for change amongst service users in a drug addiction recovery program. A total of nine semi-structured interviews were carried out with patients who also worked with a peer worker as part of their involvement with the service. Participant observation and keeping a research diary were additional methods of data collection. The data collected was further processed using reflective thematic analysis. This article draws on DiClemente's (2018. Addiction and Change: How Addictions Develop and Addicted People Recover , Guilford Publications) transtheoretical model model of intentional behaviour change and McClelland's (1951. 'Personality, Sloane, New York', in The Achievement Motive , p. 28, New York, Appleton-Century-Crofts) theory of motivation and current research findings on motivation in the context of peer support. Main research question is 'What mechanisms of formal peer support influence motivation to change harmful behaviour in people who take drugs?' A key finding is that a successfully established peer-service user relationship is a key instrument and premise for building motivation for change. It also presents an overview of the basic mechanisms that build the peer-service user relationship as well as the basic mechanisms that build motivation for change. Violence in the intimate sphere can send women and children out of their homes and onto journeys over vast geographical distances and into various forms of temporary accommodation. When women and children are displaced like this, they have to settle and re-settle on their complex journeys away from intimate partner violence. This article shows that not all these places will be or become home and that the absence of home can entail different forms of distress, such as fear, alienation and despondency. The concept of home is (re)emerging in social work. By employing a threefold understanding of home as a physical place, a feeling and a practice, this article offers new insights into the role of home in the recovery process of women and children subjected to violence. Home is an essential place for adults and children. Therefore, this article argues that home is an important concept for social workers working with families subjected to violence, as finding home can be a central part of the recovery process. This article is based on data from two studies on families experiencing intimate partner violence, drawing on fieldwork at a women's shelter and on semi-structured interviews with women and children. Objectives Children living with a tracheostomy have among the most complex medical care needs in Canada. The focus of this study was to gain a contemporary understanding of key aspects of these children's medical journeys. Methods We conducted a qualitative constructivist grounded theory study using semi-structured focus groups with parents whose children are living in the community with a tracheostomy. Parents were recruited from the Stollery Children's Hospital Tracheostomy Clinic, which serves a geographically wide and diverse population. Results Three focus groups were completed, including a total of 12 participants. Key themes leading up to tracheostomy related to contextual understanding, experiences of inclusion, and perceptions of proportionality. Parents discussed the preparedness for how a tracheostomy would affect their child, their own involvement in recovery, and the education needed for their child's medical care. Navigating hospital units related to inconsistencies in care, accommodations of families' needs, and confidence in care received. Finally, living in the community was the focus of much of the participants' discussions including coping with system-related issues, limited homecare and medical support, cost of care, and connections with the broader community of parents of children with complex medical needs. All themes encircled the family's deeply felt responsibility to care for their child. Conclusions From both patient- and family-centered care perspectives, there exist individual and systemic issues related to the care delivery for children with a tracheostomy. Objectives To evaluate the relationship of thigh MRI (t-MRI) with manual muscle testing-8 (MMT-8), muscle enzymes and autoantibodies. To determine the causal and mediating factors resulting in poor recovery of MMT-8 in inflammatory myositis (IIM). Methods This was a single-centre retrospective study in IIM patients. t-MRI was semi-quantitatively scored for muscle oedema, fascial oedema, muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration. Spearman correlation of t-MRI scores was done with muscle enzymes at baseline, and MMT-8 at baseline and on follow-up. Causal mediation analysis was performed with age, sex, symptom duration, autoantibodies, diabetes and BMI as independent variables, follow-up MMT-8 as dependent and t-MRI scores as mediating variables. Results Baseline evaluation was done on 59 and follow-up on 38 patients. Median follow-up of the cohort was 31 (10–57) months. Baseline MMT-8 negatively correlated with muscle oedema (r = –0755), fascial oedema (r = –0.443) and muscle atrophy (r = –0.343). Creatinine kinase (r = 0.422) and aspartate transaminase (r = 0.480) positively correlated with muscle oedema. Follow-up MMT-8 correlated negatively with baseline atrophy (r = –0.497) and fatty infiltration (r = –0.531). On follow-up, MMT-8 males had positive total effect (estimate (95%CI)) via atrophy [2.93 (0.44, 4.89)] and fatty infiltration [2.08 (0.54, 3.71)]. Antisynthetase antibody had a positive total effect via fatty infiltration [4.50 (0.37, 7.59)]. Age had a negative total effect via atrophy [–0.09 (0.19, –0.01)] and fatty infiltration [–0.07 (–0.15, –0.01)]. Disease duration had a negative total effect via fatty infiltration [–0.18 (–0.27, –0.02)]. Conclusion Baseline fatty infiltration and muscle atrophy resulting from older age, female sex, longer disease duration and absent anti-synthetase antibodies, partly mediate muscle recovery in IIM. In mental health clinical practice, listening is viewed as a fundamental skill that clinicians should possess to support service users and enable recovery. Given its importance, this review sought to explore how listening is understood in mental health clinical practice. A scoping review was conducted to search for peer-reviewed articles reporting on literary and empirical studies. The search covered five databases (JSTOR, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Google Scholar) and the International Journal of Listening. A total of nineteen articles published from 2000 to 2022 were included for analysis. Thematic analysis was used to identify relevant themes. Findings showed that although listening was seen as critical to mental health treatment and care, little had been done to deconstruct the concept, examine the way it was practised and empirically verify its use. Further, listening was described and used differently, not only across different mental health professions but even within the same profession, between practitioners. This article will discuss these variations and how certain listening types can improve the therapeutic encounter. It will further look at whether listening can be regarded as a virtuous professional characteristic trait in achieving professional role responsibilities in social work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
