Multi-modal medical image fusion (MMIF) is crucial for disease diagnosis and treatment because the images reconstructed from signals collected by different sensors can provide complementary information. In recent years, deep learning (DL) based methods have been widely used in MMIF. However, these methods often adopt a serial fusion strategy without feature decomposition, causing error accumulation and confusion of characteristics across different scales. To address these issues, we have proposed the Coupled Image Reconstruction and Fusion (CIRF) strategy. Our method parallels the image fusion and reconstruction branches which are linked by a common encoder. Firstly, CIRF uses the lightweight encoder to extract base and detail features, respectively, through the Vision Transformer (ViT) and the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) branches, where the two branches interact to supplement information. Then, two types of features are fused separately via different blocks and finally decoded into fusion results. In the loss function, both the supervised loss from the reconstruction branch and the unsupervised loss from the fusion branch are included. As a whole, CIRF increases its expressivity by adding multi-task learning and feature decomposition. Additionally, we have also explored the impact of image masking on the network's feature extraction ability and validated the generalization capability of the model. Through experiments on three datasets, it has been demonstrated both subjectively and objectively, that the images fused by CIRF exhibit appropriate brightness and smooth edge transition with more competitive evaluation metrics than those fused by several other traditional and DL-based methods. Research on transformers in remote sensing (RS), which started to increase after 2021, is facing the problem of a relative lack of review. To understand the trends of transformers in RS, we undertook a quantitative analysis of the major research on transformers over the past two years by dividing the application of transformers into eight domains: land use/land cover (LULC) classification, segmentation, fusion, change detection, object detection, object recognition, registration, and others. Quantitative results show that transformers achieve a higher accuracy in LULC classification and fusion, with more stable performance in segmentation and object detection. Combining the analysis results on LULC classification and segmentation, we have found that transformers need more parameters than convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Additionally, further research is also needed regarding inference speed to improve transformers' performance. It was determined that the most common application scenes for transformers in our database are urban, farmland, and water bodies. We also found that transformers are employed in the natural sciences such as agriculture and environmental protection rather than the humanities or economics. Finally, this work summarizes the analysis results of transformers in remote sensing obtained during the research process and provides a perspective on future directions of development. Ship detection aims to automatically identify whether there are ships in the images, precisely classifies and localizes them. Regardless of whether utilizing early manually designed methods or deep learning technology, ship detection is dedicated to exploring the inherent characteristics of ships to enhance recall. Nowadays, high-precision ship detection plays a crucial role in civilian and military applications. In order to provide a comprehensive review of ship detection in optical remote-sensing images (SDORSIs), this paper summarizes the challenges as a guide. These challenges include complex marine environments, insufficient discriminative features, large scale variations, dense and rotated distributions, large aspect ratios, and imbalances between positive and negative samples. We meticulously review the improvement methods and conduct a detailed analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. We compile ship information from common optical remote sensing image datasets and compare algorithm performance. Simultaneously, we compare and analyze the feature extraction capabilities of backbones based on CNNs and Transformer, seeking new directions for the development in SDORSIs. Several deep learning and transformer models have been recommended in previous research to deal with the classification of hyperspectral images (HSIs). Among them, one of the most innovative is the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT), which applies a distance-independent approach to capture the global dependency among all pixels in a selected region. However, this model does not consider the local spatial-spectral and spectral sequential relations. In this paper, a dual-dimensional (i.e., spatial and spectral) BERT (the so-called D2BERT) is proposed, which improves the existing BERT model by capturing more global and local dependencies between sequential spectral bands regardless of distance. In the proposed model, two BERT branches work in parallel to investigate relations among pixels and spectral bands, respectively. In addition, the layer intermediate information is used for supervision during the training phase to enhance the performance. We used two widely employed datasets for our experimental analysis. The proposed D2BERT shows superior classification accuracy and computational efficiency with respect to some state-of-the-art neural networks and the previously developed BERT model for this task. Automatic extraction of building contours from high-resolution images is of great significance in the fields of urban planning, demographics, and disaster assessment. Network models based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and transformer technology have been widely used for semantic segmentation of buildings from high resolution remote sensing images (HRSI). However, the fixed geometric structure and the local receptive field of the convolutional kernel are not good at global feature extraction, and the transformer technique with self-attention mechanism introduces computational redundancies and extracts local feature details poorly in the process of modeling the global contextual information. In this paper, a dual-branch fused reconstructive transformer network, DFRTNet, is proposed for efficient and accurate building extraction. In the encoder, the traditional transformer is reconfigured by designing the local and global feature extraction module (LGFE); the branch of global feature extraction (GFE) performs dynamic range attention (DRA) based on the idea of top-k attention for extracting global features; furthermore, the branch of local feature extraction (LFE) is used to obtain fine-grained features. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) is employed to efficiently fuse the local and global features. In the decoder, a simple channel attention module (CAM) is used in the up-sampling part to enhance channel dimension features. Our network achieved the best segmentation accuracy on both the WHU and Massachusetts building datasets when compared to other mainstream and state-of-the-art methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Accurate tumor localization is essential for effective clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, traditional magnetic particle imaging (MPI) algorithms struggle to precisely locate tumors, resulting in challenges when quantifying them. This study aims to address the issue of precise tumor localization in MPI through the application of a deep learning approach. By integrating Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Transformer modules, the goal is to improve image quality and enhance the accuracy of tumor quantification in MPI images. The research utilizes a combination of CNN and Transformer modules to capture both global and local features within MPI images. Through the application of deep learning techniques, the study seeks to remove blurry artifacts from reconstructed images, ultimately may help improve the precision of tumor localization and quantification in MPI. This approach holds significant potential for advancing MPI technology and introducing novel methodologies for future medical imaging research. Additionally, the validation of transfer learning on authentic MPI images may enhance the overall accuracy and reliability of MPI image reconstruction. Background: Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is an emerging molecular imaging technique. However, since X-space reconstruction ignores system properties, it can lead to blurring of the reconstructed image, posing challenges for accurate quantification. To address this issue, we propose the use of deep learning to remove the blurry artifacts; (2) Methods: Our network architecture consists of a combination of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Transformer. The CNN utilizes convolutional layers to automatically extract pixel-level local features and reduces the size of feature maps through pooling layers, effectively capturing local information within the images. The Transformer module is responsible for extracting contextual features from the images and efficiently capturing long-range dependencies, enabling a more effective modeling of global features in the images. By combining the features extracted by both CNN and Transformer, we capture both global and local features simultaneously, thereby improving the quality of reconstructed images; (3) Results: Experimental results demonstrate that the network effectively removes blurry artifacts from the images, and it exhibits high accuracy in precise tumor quantification. Ultra-wide-field fundus imaging (UFI) provides comprehensive visualization of crucial eye components, including the optic disk, fovea, and macula. This in-depth view facilitates doctors in accurately diagnosing diseases and recommending suitable treatments. This study investigated the application of various deep learning models for detecting eye diseases using UFI. We developed an automated system that processes and enhances a dataset of 4697 images. Our approach involves brightness and contrast enhancement, followed by applying feature extraction, data augmentation and image classification, integrated with convolutional neural networks. These networks utilize layer-wise feature extraction and transfer learning from pre-trained models to accurately represent and analyze medical images. Among the five evaluated models, including ResNet152, Vision Transformer, InceptionResNetV2, RegNet and ConVNext, ResNet152 is the most effective, achieving a testing area under the curve (AUC) score of 96.47% (with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 0.931–0.974). Additionally, the paper presents visualizations of the model's predictions, including confidence scores and heatmaps that highlight the model's focal points—particularly where lesions due to damage are evident. By streamlining the diagnosis process and providing intricate prediction details without human intervention, our system serves as a pivotal tool for ophthalmologists.
