The proliferation of invasive plant species poses a significant ecological threat, necessitating effective mapping strategies for control and conservation efforts. Existing studies employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and multispectral (MS) sensors in complex natural environments have predominantly relied on classical machine learning (ML) models for mapping plant species in natural environments. However, a critical gap exists in the literature regarding the use of deep learning (DL) techniques that integrate MS data and vegetation indices (VIs) with different feature extraction techniques to map invasive species in complex natural environments. This research addresses this gap by focusing on mapping the distribution of the Broad-leaved pepper (BLP) along the coastal strip in the Sunshine Coast region of Southern Queensland in Australia. The methodology employs a dual approach, utilising classical ML models including Random Forest (RF), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in conjunction with the U-Net DL model. This comparative analysis allows for an in-depth evaluation of the performance and effectiveness of both classical ML and advanced DL techniques in mapping the distribution of BLP along the coastal strip. Results indicate that the DL U-Net model outperforms classical ML models, achieving a precision of 83%, recall of 81%, and F1–score of 82% for BLP classification during training and validation. The DL U-Net model attains a precision of 86%, recall of 76%, and F1–score of 81% for BLP classification, along with an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 68% on the separate test dataset not used for training. The progress of incorporating deep learning in the field of medical image interpretation has been greatly hindered due to the tremendous cost and time associated with generating ground truth for supervised machine learning, alongside concerns about the inconsistent quality of images acquired. Active learning offers a potential solution to these problems of expanding dataset ground truth by algorithmically choosing the most informative samples for ground truth labeling. Still, this effort incurs the costs of human labeling, which needs minimization. Furthermore, automatic labeling approaches employing active learning often exhibit overfitting tendencies while selecting samples closely aligned with the training set distribution and excluding out-of-distribution samples, which could potentially improve the model's effectiveness. We propose that the majority of out-of-distribution instances can be attributed to inconsistent cross images. Since the FDA approved the first whole-slide image system for medical diagnosis in 2017, whole-slide images have provided enriched critical information to advance the field of automated histopathology. Here, we exemplify the benefits of a novel deep learning strategy that utilizes high-resolution whole-slide microscopic images. We quantitatively assess and visually highlight the inconsistencies within the whole-slide image dataset employed in this study. Accordingly, we introduce a deep learning-based preprocessing algorithm designed to normalize unknown samples to the training set distribution, effectively mitigating the overfitting issue. Consequently, our approach significantly increases the amount of automatic region-of-interest ground truth labeling on high-resolution whole-slide images using active deep learning. We accept 92% of the automatic labels generated for our unlabeled data cohort, expanding the labeled dataset by 845%. Indoor wireless positioning has long been a dynamic field of research due to its broad application range. While many commercial products have been developed, they often are not open source or require substantial and costly infrastructure. Academically, research has extensively explored Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for positioning, yet there are a noticeable lack of studies that comprehensively compare traditional algorithms under these conditions. This research aims to fill this gap by evaluating classical positioning algorithms such as K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor (WKNN), Naïve Bayes (NB), and a Received Signal Strength-based Neural Network (RSS-NN) using BLE technology. We also introduce a novel method using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), specifically tailored to process RSS data structured in an image-like format. This approach helps overcome the limitations of traditional RSS fingerprinting by effectively managing the environmental dynamics within indoor settings. In our tests, all algorithms performed well, consistently achieving an average accuracy of less than two meters. Remarkably, the CNN method outperformed others, achieving an accuracy of 1.22 m. These results establish a solid basis for future research, particularly towards enhancing the precision of indoor positioning systems using deep learning for cost-effective, easy to set up applications. Background and Objectives: The availability of multiple dental implant systems makes it difficult for the treating dentist to identify and classify the implant in case of inaccessibility or loss of previous records. Artificial intelligence (AI) is reported to have a high success rate in medical image classification and is effectively used in this area. Studies have reported improved implant classification and identification accuracy when AI is used with trained dental professionals. This systematic review aims to analyze various studies discussing the accuracy of AI tools in implant identification and classification. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed, and the study was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). The focused PICO question for the current study was "What is the accuracy (outcome) of artificial intelligence tools (Intervention) in detecting and/or classifying the type of dental implant (Participant/population) using X-ray images?" Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE-PubMed, and Cochrane were searched systematically to collect the relevant published literature. The search strings were based on the formulated PICO question. The article search was conducted in January 2024 using the Boolean operators and truncation. The search was limited to articles published in English in the last 15 years (January 2008 to December 2023). The quality of all the selected articles was critically analyzed using the Quality Assessment and Diagnostic Accuracy Tool (QUADAS-2). Results: Twenty-one articles were selected for qualitative analysis based on predetermined selection criteria. Study characteristics were tabulated in a self-designed table. Out of the 21 studies evaluated, 14 were found to be at risk of bias, with high or unclear risk in one or more domains. The remaining seven studies, however, had a low risk of bias. The overall accuracy of AI models in implant detection and identification ranged from a low of 67% to as high as 98.5%. Most included studies reported mean accuracy levels above 90%. Conclusions: The articles in the present review provide considerable evidence to validate that AI tools have high accuracy in identifying and classifying dental implant systems using 2-dimensional X-ray images. Simple Summary: Early detection of malignant melanoma (MM) has the potential to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality as the thickness of the lesion is closely associated with prognosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a non-invasive technology that has the potential to aid clinicians in the early diagnosis of skin cancers, including melanoma. Performance metrics of machine-based AI have been shown to rival or improve upon clinician diagnosis. However, many studies have limited this scope to pre-build image databases that may not replicate real-world settings experienced in general practice. This systematic review aimed to report the performance of commercial or market-approved dermatoscopic systems with AI in the form of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) when tasked with classifying melanoma. The sensitivity and specificity of CNNs are highly varied and illustrate the necessity of clinician-to-patient interaction in the diagnosis process. Clinicians working in unison with AI show the most promise for better performance when classifying MM. Background: Cutaneous melanoma remains an increasing global public health burden, particularly in fair-skinned populations. Advancing technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), may provide an additional tool for clinicians to help detect malignancies with a more accurate success rate. This systematic review aimed to report the performance metrics of commercially available convolutional neural networks (CNNs) tasked with detecting MM. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Web of Science databases. Results: A total of 16 articles reporting MM were included in this review. The combined number of melanomas detected was 1160, and non-melanoma lesions were 33,010. The performance of market-approved technology and clinician performance for classifying melanoma was highly heterogeneous, with sensitivity ranging from 16.4 to 100.0%, specificity between 40.0 and 98.3% and accuracy between 44.0 and 92.0%. Less heterogeneity was observed when clinicians worked in unison with AI, with sensitivity ranging between 83.3 and 100.0%, specificity between 83.7 and 87.3%, and accuracy between 86.4 and 86.9%. Conclusion: Instead of focusing on the performance of AI versus clinicians for classifying melanoma, more consistent performance has been obtained when clinicians' work is supported by AI, facilitating management decisions and improving health outcomes. Deep neural networks have demonstrated outstanding performances in agriculture production. Agriculture production is one of the most important sectors because it has a direct impact on the economy and social life of any society. Plant disease identification is a big challenge for agriculture production, for which we need a fast and accurate technique to identify plant disease. With the recent advancement in deep learning, we can develop a robust and accurate system. This research investigated the use of deep learning for accurate and fast tomato plant disease identification. In this research, we have used individual and merged datasets of tomato plants with 10 diseases (including healthy plants). The main aim of this work is to check the accuracy of the existing convolutional neural network models such as Visual Geometry Group, Residual Net, and DenseNet on tomato plant disease detection and then design a custom deep neural network model to give the best accuracy in case of the tomato plant. We have trained and tested our models with datasets containing over 18,000 and 25,000 images with 10 classes. We achieved over 99% accuracy with our custom model. This high accuracy was achieved with less training time and lower computational cost compared to other CNNs. This research demonstrates the potential of deep learning for efficient and accurate tomato plant disease detection, which can benefit farmers and contribute to improved agricultural production. In Internet of Things-based smart grids, smart meters record and report a massive number of power consumption data at certain intervals to the data center of the utility for load monitoring and energy management. Energy theft is a big problem for smart meters and causes non-technical losses. Energy theft attacks can be launched by malicious consumers by compromising the smart meters to report manipulated consumption data for less billing. It is a global issue causing technical and financial damage to governments and operators. Deep learning-based techniques can effectively identify consumers involved in energy theft through power consumption data. In this study, a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-based energy-theft-detection system is proposed to detect data-tampering cyber-attack vectors. CNN is a commonly employed method that automates the extraction of features and the classification process. We employed CNN for feature extraction and traditional machine learning algorithms for classification. In this work, honest data were obtained from a real dataset. Six attack vectors causing data tampering were utilized. Tampered data were synthetically generated through these attack vectors. Six separate datasets were created for each attack vector to design a specialized detector tailored for that specific attack. Additionally, a dataset containing all attack vectors was also generated for the purpose of designing a general detector. Furthermore, the imbalanced dataset problem was addressed through the application of the generative adversarial network (GAN) method. GAN was chosen due to its ability to generate new data closely resembling real data, and its application in this field has not been extensively explored. The data generated with GAN ensured better training for the hybrid CNN-based detector on honest and malicious consumption patterns. The present study presents a novel approach for identifying epileptogenic tubers in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and automating tuber segmentation using a three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D CNN). The study retrospectively included 31 TSC patients whose lesions were manually annotated from multiparametric neuroimaging data. Epileptogenic tubers were determined via presurgical evaluation and stereoelectroencephalography recording. Neuroimaging metrics were extracted and compared between epileptogenic and non-epileptogenic tubers. Additionally, five datasets with different preprocessing strategies were used to construct and train 3D CNNs for automated tuber segmentation. The normalized positron emission tomography (PET) metabolic value was significantly lower in epileptogenic tubers defined via presurgical evaluation (p = 0.001). The CNNs showed high performance for localizing tubers, with an accuracy between 0.992 and 0.994 across the five datasets. The automated segmentations were highly correlated with clinician-based features. The neuroimaging characteristics for epileptogenic tubers were demonstrated, increasing surgical confidence in clinical practice. The validated deep learning detection algorithm yielded a high performance in determining tubers with an excellent agreement with reference clinician-based segmentation. Collectively, when coupled with our investigation of minimal input requirements, the approach outlined in this study represents a clinically invaluable tool for the management of TSC. Simple Summary: This systematic review demonstrated that artificial intelligence (AI) can help detect metastatic prostate cancer with or without lymph node involvement on prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET scans with high accuracy. Additional benefits of AI include the ability to estimate the volume of metastatic cancer, prognosticate, and differentiate bony metastasis from post-radiotherapy bone changes. AI can also improve workflow by helping to standardize reporting and automate time-consuming tasks. However, given the variable sensitivity and positive predictive value of AI, it is recommended that an experienced nuclear medicine physician proofread the final report. Larger studies producing more consistent results are needed before AI can be fully integrated into PSMA reporting. Early detection of metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa) is crucial. Whilst the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET scan has high diagnostic accuracy, it suffers from inter-reader variability, and the time-consuming reporting process. This systematic review was registered on PROSPERO (ID CRD42023456044) and aims to evaluate AI's ability to enhance reporting, diagnostics, and predictive capabilities for mPCa on PSMA PET scans. Inclusion criteria covered studies using AI to evaluate mPCa on PSMA PET, excluding non-PSMA tracers. A search was conducted on Medline, Embase, and Scopus from inception to July 2023. After screening 249 studies, 11 remained eligible for inclusion. Due to the heterogeneity of studies, meta-analysis was precluded. The prediction model risk of bias assessment tool (PROBAST) indicated a low overall risk of bias in ten studies, though only one incorporated clinical parameters (such as age, and Gleason score). AI demonstrated a high accuracy (98%) in identifying lymph node involvement and metastatic disease, albeit with sensitivity variation (62–97%). Advantages included distinguishing bone lesions, estimating tumour burden, predicting treatment response, and automating tasks accurately. In conclusion, AI showcases promising capabilities in enhancing the diagnostic potential of PSMA PET scans for mPCa, addressing current limitations in efficiency and variability. Mobile fitness applications provide the opportunity to show users real-time feedback on their current fitness activity. For such applications, it is essential to accurately track the user's current fitness activity using available mobile sensors, such as inertial measurement units (IMUs). Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been shown to produce strong results in different time series classification tasks, including the recognition of daily living activities. However, fitness activities can present unique challenges to the human activity recognition task (HAR), including greater similarity between individual activities and fewer available data for model training. In this paper, we evaluate the applicability of CNNs to the fitness activity recognition task (FAR) using IMU data and determine the impact of input data size and sensor count on performance. For this purpose, we adapted three existing CNN architectures to the FAR task and designed a fourth CNN variant, which we call the scaling fully convolutional network (Scaling-FCN). We designed a preprocessing pipeline and recorded a running exercise data set with 20 participants, in which we evaluated the respective recognition performances of the four networks, comparing them with three traditional machine learning (ML) methods commonly used in HAR. Although CNN architectures achieve at least 94% test accuracy in all scenarios, two traditional ML architectures surpass them in the default scenario, with support vector machines (SVMs) achieving 99.00 ± 0.34% test accuracy. The removal of all sensors except one foot sensor reduced the performance of traditional ML architectures but improved the performance of CNN architectures on our data set, with our Scaling-FCN reaching the highest accuracy of 99.86 ± 0.11% on the test set. Our results suggest that CNNs are generally well suited for fitness activity recognition, and noticeable performance improvements can be achieved if sensors are dropped selectively, although traditional ML architectures can still compete with or even surpass CNNs when favorable input data are utilized.
