The high expansion of a variable and intermittent nature of distributed generation, such as photovoltaics (PV), can cause technical issues in existing distribution networks (DN). In addition to producing electrical energy, PVs are inverter-based sources, and can help conventional control mechanisms in mitigating technical issues. This paper proposes a multi-stage optimal power flow (OPF)-based mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model for improving an operation state in LV PV-rich DN. A conventional control mechanism such as on load tap changer (OLTC) is used in the first stage to mitigate overvoltage caused by PVs. The second stage is related to reducing losses in DN using reactive power capabilities from PVs, which defines the optimization problem as a fully centralized observed from the distribution system operator's (DSO) point of view. The optimization problem is realized under the co-simulation approach in which the power system analyzer and computational intelligence (CI) optimization method interact through an interface. This approach allows keeping the original MINLP model without approximations and using any computational intelligence method. OpenDSS is used as a power system analyzer, while particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used as a CI optimization method in this paper. Detailed case studies are performed and analyzed over a single-day period. To study validation and feasibility, the proposed model is evaluated on the IEEE LV European distribution feeder. The obtained results suggest that a combination of conventional control mechanisms (OLTC) and inverter-based sources (PVs) represent a promising solution for DSO and can serve as an alternative control method in active distribution networks. Problems related to ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are very common, and evaluating them using computational methods can assist in selecting the most appropriate treatment. This study is based upon data from 3339 patients from different European countries observed during the last 12 years (2012–2023), which were collected by specialists in hernia surgery. Most patients underwent standard surgical procedures, with a growing trend towards laparoscopic surgery. This paper focuses on statistically evaluating the treatment methods in relation to patient age, body mass index (BMI), and the type of repair. Appropriate mathematical methods are employed to extract and classify the selected features, with emphasis on computational and machine-learning techniques. The paper presents surgical hernia treatment statistics related to patient age, BMI, and repair methods. The main conclusions point to mean groin hernia repair (GHR) complications of 19% for patients in the database. The accuracy of separating GHR mesh surgery with and without postoperative complications reached 74.4% using a two-layer neural network classification. Robotic surgeries represent 22.9% of all the evaluated hernia repairs. The proposed methodology suggests both an interdisciplinary approach and the utilization of computational intelligence in hernia surgery, potentially applicable in a clinical setting. Road extraction from high-resolution remote sensing images has long been a focal and challenging research topic in the field of computer vision. Accurate extraction of road networks holds extensive practical value in various fields, such as urban planning, traffic monitoring, disaster response and environmental monitoring. With rapid development in the field of computational intelligence, particularly breakthroughs in deep learning technology, road extraction technology has made significant progress and innovation. This paper provides a systematic review of deep learning-based methods for road extraction from remote sensing images, focusing on analyzing the application of computational intelligence technologies in improving the precision and efficiency of road extraction. According to the type of annotated data, deep learning-based methods are categorized into fully supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, and unsupervised learning approaches, each further divided into more specific subcategories. They are comparatively analyzed based on their principles, advantages, and limitations. Additionally, this review summarizes the metrics used to evaluate the performance of road extraction models and the high-resolution remote sensing image datasets applied for road extraction. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and prospects for leveraging computational intelligence techniques to enhance the precision, automation, and intelligence of road network extraction. This paper presents a modular hardware control system tailored for industrial applications. The system presented is designed with electrical protection, guaranteeing the reliable operation of its modules in the presence of various field noises and external disturbances. The modular architecture comprises a principal module (mP) and dedicated expansion modules (mEXs). The principal module serves as the network administrator and facilitates interaction with production and control processes. The mEXs are equipped with sensors, conditioning circuits, analog-to-digital converters, and digital signal processing capabilities. The mEX's primary function is to acquire local processing field signals and ensure their reliable transmission to the mP. Two specific mEXs were developed for industrial environments: an electrical signal expansion module (mSE) and the vibration signals expansion module (mSV). The EtherCAT protocol serves as a means of communication between the modules, fostering deterministic and real-time interactions while also simplifying the integration and replacement of modules within the modular architecture. The proposed system incorporates local and distributed processing in which data acquisition, processing, and data analysis are carried out closer to where data are generated. Locally processing the acquired data close to the production in the mEX increases the mP availability and network reliability. For the local processing, feature extraction algorithms were developed on the mEX based on a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm and a curve-fitting algorithm that accurately represents a given FFT curve by significantly reducing the amount of data that needs to be transmitted over the mP. The proposed system offers a promising solution to use computational intelligence methodologies and meet the growing need for a modular industrial control system with reliable local data processing to reach a smart industry. The main objective of the research presented in the following work was the adaptation of reflection-radar technology in a detection and navigation system using radio-tomographic imaging techniques. As key aspects of this work, the energy optimization of high-frequency transmitters can be considered for use inside buildings while maintaining user safety. The resulting building monitoring and control system using a network of intelligent sensors supported by artificial intelligence algorithms, such as logistic regression or neural networks, should be considered an outcome. This paper discusses the methodology for extracting information from signal echoes and how they were transported and aggregated. The data extracted in this way were used to support user navigation through a building, optimize energy based on presence information, and increase the facility's overall security level. A band from 5 GHz to 6 GHz was chosen as the carrier frequency of the signals, representing a compromise between energy expenditure, range, and the properties of wave behavior in contact with different types of matter. The system includes proprietary hardware solutions that allow parameters to be adjusted over the entire range and guarantee adaptation for RTI (radio tomography imaging) technology. This paper presents the author's approaches based on computational intelligence methods for application in the Autonomous Navigation System (ANS) of a smart ship. The considered task is collision avoidance, which is one of the vital functions of the ANS. The proposed methods, applying the Ant Colony Optimization and the Firefly Algorithm, were compared with other artificial intelligence approaches introduced in the recent literature, e.g., evolutionary algorithms and machine learning. The advantages and disadvantages of different algorithms are formulated. Results of simulation experiments carried out with the use of the developed algorithms are presented and discussed. Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of childhood disability, and it has become a key public health priority recognized by the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Objectives: This review will: (1) summarize current practice in the diagnosis and management of PTB, (2) outline developments in precision-based medicine for diagnostics to improve the care provided to pregnant women at risk of PTB, and (3) discuss the implications of current research in personalized medicine and the potential of future advances to influence the clinical care of women at risk of PTB. Methodology: This is a narrative literature review. Relevant journal articles were identified following searches of computerized databases. Key Results: Current and emerging technologies for the utility of personalized medicine in the context of PTB have the potential for applications in: (1) direct diagnostics to identify and target infection as one of the main known causes of PTB, (2) identifying novel maternal and fetal biomarkers, (3) the use of artificial intelligence and computational modeling, and (4) combining methods to enhance diagnosis and treatment. This review explores the current research landscape surrounding the application of graph-based approaches for both anomaly detection and classification within the MIT-BIH database. By analyzing diverse methodologies and their respective accuracies, this investigation aims to empower researchers and practitioners in the field of ECG signal analysis. Despite their proficiency with typical environmental datasets, deep learning-based object detection algorithms struggle when faced with diverse adverse weather conditions. Moreover, existing methods often address single adverse weather scenarios, neglecting situations involving multiple concurrent adverse conditions. To tackle these challenges, we propose an enhanced approach to object detection in power construction sites under various adverse weather conditions, dubbed IDP-YOLOV9. This model leverages a parallel architecture comprising the Image Dehazing and Enhancement Processing (IDP) module and an improved YOLOV9 object detection module. Specifically, for images captured in adverse weather, our approach employs a parallel architecture that includes the Three-Weather Removal Algorithm (TRA) module and the Deep Learning-based Image Enhancement (DLIE) module, which, together, filter multiple weather factors to enhance image quality. Subsequently, we introduce an improved YOLOV9 detection network module that incorporates a three-layer routing attention mechanism for object detection. Experiments demonstrate that the IDP module significantly improves image quality by mitigating the impact of various adverse weather conditions. Compared to traditional single-processing models, our method improves recognition accuracy on complex weather datasets by 6.8% in terms of mean average precision (mAP50). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of the liquid–gas flow regime is important for the proper control of many industrial processes (e.g., in the mining, nuclear, petrochemical, and environmental industries). The latest publications in this field concern the use of computational intelligence methods for flow structure recognition, which include, for example, expert systems and artificial neural networks. Generally, machine learning methods exploit various characteristics of sensors signals in the value, time, frequency, and time–frequency domain. In this work, the convolutional neural network (CNN) VGG-16 is applied for analysis of histogram images of signals obtained for water–air flow by using gamma-ray absorption. The experiments were carried out on the laboratory hydraulic installation fitted with a radiometric measurement system. The essential part of the hydraulic installation is a horizontal pipeline made of metalplex, 4.5 m long, with an internal diameter of 30 mm. The radiometric measurement set used in the investigation consists of a linear Am-241 radiation source with an energy of 59.5 keV and a scintillation detector with a NaI(Tl) crystal. In this work, four types of water–air flow regimes (plug, slug, bubble, and transitional plug–bubble) were studied. MATLAB 2022a software was used to analyze the measurement signal obtained from the detector. It was found that the CNN network correctly recognizes the flow regime in more than 90% of the cases. Self-supervised learning continues to drive advancements in machine learning. However, the absence of unified computational processes for benchmarking and evaluation remains a challenge. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art self-supervised learning algorithms, emphasizing their underlying mechanisms and computational intricacies. Building upon this analysis, we introduce a unified model-agnostic computation (UMAC) process, tailored to complement modern self-supervised learning algorithms. UMAC serves as a model-agnostic and global explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methodology that is capable of systematically integrating and enhancing state-of-the-art algorithms. Through UMAC, we identify key computational mechanisms and craft a unified framework for self-supervised learning evaluation. Leveraging UMAC, we integrate an XAI methodology to enhance transparency and interpretability. Our systematic approach yields a 17.12% increase in improvement in training time complexity and a 13.1% boost in improvement in testing time complexity. Notably, improvements are observed in augmentation, encoder architecture, and auxiliary components within the network classifier. These findings underscore the importance of structured computational processes in enhancing model efficiency and fortifying algorithmic transparency in self-supervised learning, paving the way for more interpretable and efficient AI models. The adequacy and efficacy of simple and hybrid machine learning and Computational Intelligence algorithms were evaluated for the classification of potential prostate cancer patients in two distinct categories, the high- and the low-risk group for PCa. The evaluation is based on randomly generated surrogate data for the biomarker PSA, considering that reported epidemiological data indicated that PSA values follow a lognormal distribution. In addition, four more biomarkers were considered, namely, PSAD (PSA density), PSAV (PSA velocity), PSA ratio, and Digital Rectal Exam evaluation (DRE), as well as patient age. Seven simple classification algorithms, namely, Decision Trees, Random Forests, Support Vector Machines, K-Nearest Neighbors, Logistic Regression, Naïve Bayes, and Artificial Neural Networks, were evaluated in terms of classification accuracy. In addition, three hybrid algorithms were developed and introduced in the present work, where Genetic Algorithms were utilized as a metaheuristic searching technique in order to optimize the training set, in terms of minimizing its size, to give optimal classification accuracy for the simple algorithms including K-Nearest Neighbors, a K-means clustering algorithm, and a genetic clustering algorithm. Results indicated that prostate cancer cases can be classified with high accuracy, even by the use of small training sets, with sizes that could be even smaller than 30% of the dataset. Numerous computer experiments indicated that the proposed training set minimization does not cause overfitting of the hybrid algorithms. Computational intelligence technologies have been extensively applied for the interpretation of remote sensing imagery. Recently, the computational-intelligence-based Transformer change detection (CD) approach has attracted increasing attention. However, the current Transformer-based CD method can better capture global features, but there is no good solution for the loss of local detail information. For this reason, introducing semantic and frequency information from the perspective of a dual-domain can be beneficial for improving the representation of detailed features to improve CD performance. To overcome this limitation, a dual-domain Transformer (D2Former) is proposed for CD. Firstly, we adopt a semantic tokenizer to capture the semantic information, which promotes the enrichment and refinement of semantic change information in the Transformer. Secondly, a frequency tokenizer is introduced to acquire the frequency information of the features, which offers the proposed D2Former another aspect and dimension to enhance the ability to detect change information. Therefore, the proposed D2Former employs dual-domain tokenizers to acquire and fuse the feature representation with rich semantic and frequency information, which can refine the features to acquire more fine-grained CD ability. Extensive experiments on three CD benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed D2Former obviously outperforms some other existing approaches. The results present the competitive performance of our method on the WHU-CD, LEVIR-CD, and GZ-CD datasets, for which it achieved F1-Score metrics of 92.85%, 90.60%, and 87.02%, respectively. As electric vehicles (EVs) gain momentum in the shift towards sustainable transportation, the efficiency and reliability of energy storage systems become paramount. Lithium-ion batteries stand at the forefront of this transition, necessitating sophisticated battery management systems (BMS) to enhance their performance and lifespan. This research presents an innovative simulation of a 4S3P lithium-ion battery pack using MATLAB R2023b, designed to refine BMS capabilities by employing advanced mathematical modelling and computational intelligence. The simulation meticulously analyses critical operational metrics such as state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), temperature variations, and electrical behaviour under diverse load scenarios, offering deep insights into the intricate dynamics of lithium-ion batteries in EV applications. The results corroborate the simulation model's accuracy in reflecting actual battery pack performance and underscore significant improvements in BMS strategies, especially concerning predictive maintenance and adaptive charging techniques. The assessment of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) combined positive scoring (CPS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is challenged by pre-analytical and inter-observer variabilities. An educational program to compare the diagnostic performances between local pathologists and a board of pathologists on 11 challenging cases from different Italian pathology centers stained with PD-L1 immunohistochemistry on a digital pathology platform is reported. A laboratory-developed test (LDT) using both 22C3 (Dako) and SP263 (Ventana) clones on Dako or Ventana platforms was compared with the companion diagnostic (CDx) Dako 22C3 pharm Dx assay. A computational approach was performed to assess possible correlations between stain features and pathologists' visual assessments. Technical discordances were noted in five cases (LDT vs. CDx, 45%), due to an abnormal nuclear/cytoplasmic diaminobenzidine (DAB) stain in LDT (n = 2, 18%) and due to variation in terms of intensity, dirty background, and DAB droplets (n = 3, 27%). Interpretative discordances were noted in six cases (LDT vs. CDx, 54%). CPS remained unchanged, increased, or decreased from LDT to CDx in three (27%) cases, two (18%) cases, and one (9%) case, respectively, around relevant cutoffs (1 and 20, k = 0.63). Differences noted in DAB intensity/distribution using computational pathology partly explained the LDT vs. CDx differences in two cases (18%). Digital pathology may help in PD-L1 scoring, serving as a second opinion consultation platform in challenging cases. Computational intelligence (CI) uses applied computational methods for problem-solving inspired by the behavior of humans and animals. Biological systems are used to construct software to solve complex problems, and one type of such system is an artificial immune system (AIS), which imitates the immune system of a living body. AISs have been used to solve problems that require identification and learning, such as computer virus identification and removal, image identification, and function optimization problems. In the body's immune system, a wide variety of cells work together to distinguish between the self and non-self and to eliminate the non-self. AISs enable learning and discrimination by imitating part or all of the mechanisms of a living body's immune system. Certainly, some deep neural networks have exceptional performance that far surpasses that of humans in certain tasks, but to build such a network, a huge amount of data is first required. These networks are used in a wide range of applications, such as extracting knowledge from a large amount of data, learning from past actions, and creating the optimal solution (the optimization problem). A new technique for pre-training natural language processing (NLP) software ver.9.1by using transformers called Bidirectional Encoder Representations (BERT) builds on recent research in pre-training contextual representations, including Semi-Supervised Sequence Learning, Generative Pre-Training, ELMo (Embeddings from Language Models), which is a method for obtaining distributed representations that consider context, and ULMFit (Universal Language Model Fine-Tuning). BERT is a method that can address the issue of the need for large amounts of data, which is inherent in large-scale models, by using pre-learning with unlabeled data. An optimization problem involves "finding a solution that maximizes or minimizes an objective function under given constraints". In recent years, machine learning approaches that consider pattern recognition as an optimization problem have become popular. This pattern recognition is an operation that associates patterns observed as spatial and temporal changes in signals with classes to which they belong. It involves identifying and retrieving predetermined features and rules from data; however, the features and rules here are not logical information, but are found in images, sounds, etc. Therefore, pattern recognition is generally conducted by supervised learning. AliAmvra is a project developed to explore and promote high-quality catches of the Amvrakikos Gulf (GP) to Artas' wider regions. In addition, this project aimed to implement an integrated plan of action to form a business identity with high added value and achieve integrated business services adapted to the special characteristics of the area. The action plan for this project was to actively search for new markets, create a collective identity for the products, promote their quality and added value, engage in gastronomes and tasting exhibitions, dissemination and publicity actions, as well as enhance the quality of the products and markets based on the customer needs. The primary focus of this study is to observe and analyze the data retrieved from various tasting exhibitions of the AliAmvra project, with a target goal of improving customer experience and product quality. An extensive analysis was conducted for this study by collecting data through surveys that took place in the gastronomes of the AliAmvra project. Our objective was to conduct two types of reviews, one focused in data analysis and the other on evaluating model-driven algorithms. Each review utilized a survey with an individual structure, with each one serving a different purpose. In addition, our model review focused its attention on developing a robust recommendation system with said data. The algorithms we evaluated were MLP (multi-layered perceptron), RBF (radial basis function), GenClass, NNC (neural network construction), and FC (feature construction), which were used for the implementation of the recommendation system. As our final verdict, we determined that FC (feature construction) performed best, presenting the lowest classification rate of 24.87%, whilst the algorithm that performed the worst on average was RBF (radial basis function). Due to an insufficient amount of image annotation, artificial intelligence in computational histopathology usually relies on fine-tuning pre-trained neural networks. While vanilla fine-tuning has shown to be effective, research on computer vision has recently proposed improved algorithms, promising better accuracy. While initial studies have demonstrated the benefits of these algorithms for medical AI, in particular for radiology, there is no empirical evidence for improved accuracy in histopathology. Therefore, based on the ConvNeXt architecture, our study performs a systematic comparison of nine task adaptation techniques, namely, DELTA, L2-SP, MARS-PGM, Bi-Tuning, BSS, MultiTune, SpotTune, Co-Tuning, and vanilla fine-tuning, on five histopathological classification tasks using eight datasets. The results are based on external testing and statistical validation and reveal a multifaceted picture: some techniques are better suited for histopathology than others, but depending on the classification task, a significant relative improvement in accuracy was observed for five advanced task adaptation techniques over the control method, i.e., vanilla fine-tuning (e.g., Co-Tuning: P(≫) = 0.942, d = 2.623). Furthermore, we studied the classification accuracy for three of the nine methods with respect to the training set size (e.g., Co-Tuning: P(≫) = 0.951, γ = 0.748). Overall, our results show that the performance of advanced task adaptation techniques in histopathology is affected by influencing factors such as the specific classification task or the size of the training dataset. The natural evolution of consciousness in different animal species mandates that conscious experiences are causally potent in order to confer any advantage in the struggle for survival. Any endeavor to construct a physical theory of consciousness based on emergence within the framework of classical physics, however, leads to causally impotent conscious experiences in direct contradiction to evolutionary theory since epiphenomenal consciousness cannot evolve through natural selection. Here, we review recent theoretical advances in describing sentience and free will as fundamental aspects of reality granted by quantum physical laws. Modern quantum information theory considers quantum states as a physical resource that endows quantum systems with the capacity to perform physical tasks that are classically impossible. Reductive identification of conscious experiences with the quantum information comprised in quantum brain states allows for causally potent consciousness that is capable of performing genuine choices for future courses of physical action.
