The integration of renewable generation presents a promising venue for displacing fossil fuels, yet integration remains a challenge. This paper investigates Demand Response (DR) as a means of economically integrating Renewable Energy Resources (RERs). We propose Incentive-Based DR (IBDR) programs, particularly suitable for small customers. The uncertainties in the electricity market price pose a challenge to IBDR programs, which is addressed in this paper through a novel and robust IBDR approach that considers both the electricity market price uncertainties and customer responses to incentives. In this paper, scenarios are simulated premised on the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) 240-bus system in which coal-fired power plants become inactivated, while the RER contribution increases in the span of one year. The simulation results indicate that the proposed IBDR program mitigates the issues associated with renewable expansion, such as utility benefit loss and market price volatility. In addition, the proposed IBDR effectively manages up to 30% of errors in day-ahead wind forecasts that significantly reduce financial risks linked to IBDR programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal remains an important fuel for use in thermal power plants. However, coal-burning power plants produce large amounts of CFA, which contains TEs such as B, F, and Se, which are leached upon contact with water and act as potential polluters of aquifer systems and soil. To study the transformation of TEs, a thermodynamic calculation (FactSage 7.2) was used. Paper sludge ash was used as a calcium compound additive. The influence of blending a high-calcium additive on the environmental safety of TEs was investigated based on the effect of the mass addition ratio of PS ash. This study's results confirmed that the leaching processes of TEs, namely (CaO)2(Al2O3), CaF2, Ca10(PO4)F2, and CaSeO4(H2O)2, were caused by the formation of B, F, and Se compounds during the leaching process. Thus, it is clear that calcium has the greatest influence on the transformation of TEs due to their reaction, which, in turn, minimizes the effects of the TEs' release into the environment. The concentrations of TEs from the sample and addition of PS ash decreased slightly, indicating that the inhibition of TEs was enabled through the addition of PS ash. Although the PS ash YB had the highest calcium content, the PS ash YC gave the best results during the B and Se inhibition processes. The experimental observation was also evaluated for comparison. For the analysis of TEs' leaching ratios using the thermodynamic calculation and experiment, the experimental results were lower than those initially predicted. In the case of new investment in RES technology, there are two issues related to efficiency assessment. The first one is how to join technical, financial and economic efficiency assessments in one. An investment feasibility study is usually conducted through a financial analysis to obtain the internal rate of return and the net present value. However, a new RES investment is typically financially unprofitable unless the environmental and social aspects are included. The second one is a lack of required financial data. The new RES investment is often innovative and neither the owner nor other entities have financial data on the operating costs and expenditure for the last periods. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed two methods of efficiency assessment. The first one is based on the avoided costs theory. Furthermore, the second one belongs to heuristic methods and is based on the experts' assessment of different kinds of parameters. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficiency of the pilot project of VPPs using two recommended methods. This paper emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The conversion of coal-fired power plants to nuclear power stations is a potential method for decarbonizing coal power and offers a pathway for low-carbon development in China's power industry. This paper focuses on retrofitting China's coastal coal-fired power stations and compares the potential nuclear reactor technologies for the retrofit: China's mainstream pressurized water reactor and the commercially operated fourth-generation high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). The analysis compares the degree of matching between the two technologies and coal-fired power stations in terms of unit capacity, thermal system parameters, unit speed, structural dimensions, and weight, which significantly impact the retrofit scheme. The results indicate that HTGR is more compatible with coal-fired power plants and is recommended as the type of nuclear reactor technology to be retrofitted. The study selected the 210 MWe High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Pebble-Bed Module (HTR-PM) as the reactor technology for retrofitting a typical 300 MW class subcritical coal-fired unit. Based on the concept of subcritical parameters upgrading, the potential analysis and strategy study of retrofit is carried out in terms of the turbine, the main heat exchange equipment, the main pumps, and the main thermal system pipelines in the conventional island. The results indicate that the conventional island of the HTR-PM nuclear power plant has significant potential for retrofitting, which can be a crucial research direction for nuclear retrofitting of coal-fired power plants. This paper explores the potential of a new source of fly ash, deposited on the site of a coal-fired power plant in Ireland dating from 1985 to 1995, as a cement replacement material. A series of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses on binder samples with cement replacement levels of 0, 10, 25 and 35% was undertaken to determine the fly ash's mineralogical composition and to determine its suitability as a supplemental cementitious material (SCM). The XRD results reveal a unique mineral composition with promising characteristics for enhancing the strength and durability of concrete. The experimental results were used to calibrate a thermodynamic model to predict changing phase assemblage and hydration behaviour over time and per replacement level. Thermodynamic models have been shown to give credible predictions of the long-term performance of cements, including SCMs. The initial experimental results' thermodynamic modelling demonstrates the feasibility of this fly ash source as a sustainable alternative to traditional cement, paving the way for more eco-friendly construction. Morocco, despite its heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels, which made up 68% of electricity generation in 2020, has recognised its significant renewable energy potential. The Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitment is to reduce emissions by 45.5% from baseline levels with international assistance and abstain from constructing new coal plants. Moreover, the Green Hydrogen Roadmap aims to export 10 TWh of green hydrogen by 2030, as well as use it for local electricity storage. This paper critically analyses this Roadmap and Morocco's readiness to reach its ambitious targets, focusing specifically on an energy trilemma perspective and using OSeMOSYS (Open-Source energy Modelling System) for energy modelling. The results reveal that the NDC scenario is only marginally more expensive than the least-cost scenario, at around 1.3% (approximately USD 375 million), and facilitates a 23.32% emission reduction by 2050. An important note is the continued reliance on existing coal power plants across all scenarios, which challenges both energy security and emissions. The assessment of the Green Hydrogen Scenarios highlights that it could be too costly for the Moroccan government to fund the Green Hydrogen Roadmap at this scale, which leads to increased imports of polluting fossil fuels for cost reduction. In fact, the emission levels are 39% higher in the green hydrogen exports scenario than in the least-cost scenario. In coal-fired power plants, coal piles serve as the fundamental management units. Acquiring point clouds of coal piles facilitates the convenient measurement of daily coal consumption and combustion efficiency. When using servo motors to drive Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning of large-scale coal piles, the motors are subject to rotational errors due to gravitational effects. As a result, the acquired point clouds often contain significant noise. To address this issue, we proposes a Rapid Point Cloud Stitching–Constrained Particle Filter (RPCS-CPF) method. By introducing random noise to simulate servo motor rotational errors, both local and global point clouds are sequentially subjected to RPCS-CPF operations, resulting in smooth and continuous coal pile point clouds. Moreover, this paper presents a coal pile boundary detection method based on gradient region growing clustering. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed RPCS-CPF method can generate smooth and continuous coal pile point clouds, even in the presence of servo motor rotational errors. With a significant share of renewable power generation integrated into the power supply, it is crucial to timely adjust the regulating peak load for coal-fired power plants equipped with CO2 capture to ensure the stable operation of the multi-energy supply system. In this paper, the effects of varying boiler loads on the techno-economic performance of the retrofitted power plant were studied. Furthermore, the potential for reducing the cost of CO2 capture was investigated, and early opportunities for demonstration were discussed. Results showed that when the boiler load decreased from 100% turbine heat acceptance condition to 50% turbine heat acceptance condition, the cost of CO2 capture increased from 37.0 $/t CO2 to 57.0 $/t CO2, cost contribution of energy penalty and extra capital investment also increased from 20.6 $/t-CO2 to 25.7 $/t-CO2, and from 16.4 $/t-CO2 to 31.3 $/t-CO2, respectively. Furthermore, by improving separation efficiency from 0.15 to 0.5, a 25% to 30% reduction in CO2 capture cost can be achieved. The cost of CO2 capture could decrease by 42.2–50.5% when the cumulative capacity reaches 250 GW under the high investment learning rate scenario. According to the distribution of coal prices and renewable energy sources in China, the early demonstration projects of multi-energy supply systems should prioritize the northern region. Alternative solvents based on aqueous solutions of amino acids have been recently developed as possible substitutes for Mono Ethanol Amine (MEA) for CO2 removal from flue gas streams. The potassium taurate solvent has the advantages of degradation resistance, low toxicity and low energy requirements for its regeneration. With any type of solvent, CO2 removal applied to a power production plant decreases the revenues obtained from selling electricity because of the energy requirements. Operating the CO2 removal section in flexible mode avoids significant effects on the profits of the power plant, while accomplishing environmental regulations. This work is the first journal paper focusing on the application in flexible mode of the potassium taurate system for treating a flue gas stream from a 500 MW coal-fired power plant. Techno-economic evaluations are performed to determine the best operating conditions considering the variation in the electricity demand and its price, and different values of carbon tax. In the summer period, with high electricity prices and demands, carbon tax values between 45 EUR/tCO2 and 60 EUR/tCO2 favor CO2 absorption in the flexible mode, without periods of full CO2 emissions during the day. The new energy structure needs to balance energy security and dual carbon goals, which has brought major challenges to coal-fired power plants. The pollution reduction and carbon emissions reduction in coal-fired power plants will be a key task in the future. In this paper, an optimization technique for the operation of an electrostatic precipitator is proposed. Firstly, the voltage-current model is constructed based on the modified dust charging mechanism; the modified parameters are trained through the gradient descent method. Then, the outlet dust concentration prediction model is constructed by coupling the mechanism model with the data model; the data model adopts the long short-term memory network and the attention mechanism. Finally, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to achieve the optimal energy consumption while ensuring stable outlet dust concentration. By training with historical data collected on site, accurate predictions of the secondary current and outlet dust concentration of the electrostatic precipitator have been achieved. The mean absolute percentage error of the voltage-current characteristic model is 1.43%, and the relative root mean-squared error is 2%. The mean absolute percentage error of the outlet dust concentration prediction model on the testing set is 5.2%, and the relative root mean-squared error is 6.9%. The optimization experiment is carried out in a 330 MW coal-fired power plant. The results show that the fluctuation of the outlet dust concentration is more stable, and the energy saving is about 43% after optimization; according to the annual operation of 300 days, the annual average carbon reduction is approximately 2621.34 tons. The low-low-temperature electrostatic precipitator (LLT-ESP) is considered one of the mainstream technological approaches for achieving ultra-low ash emissions and has already been applied in many coal-fired power plants. Particulate matter and SO3 can both be removed by LLT-ESP. However, the removal performance of SO3 is relatively lower than that of particulate matter, which is caused by the condensation characteristics of SO3. In this paper, the condensation characteristics of SO3 were investigated on a simulated experimental system, and several measurement and characteristic methods were used to investigate mechanisms. After reducing the flue gas temperature with a heat exchanger, the size distribution of particulate matter, the mass concentration of SO3 on different sizes of particulate matter, as well as the microscopic morphology and elemental composition of particulate matter, were all experimentally studied. The results indicate that gaseous SO3 transformed into a liquid phase by heterogeneous or homogeneous condensation and then adhered to the surface of particulate matter through nucleation–condensation, collision–coalescence, and adsorption reactions. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of SO3 in LLT-ESP was also investigated under various conditions, such as ash concentration and flue gas temperature drop, suggesting that a higher ash concentration and a more significant temperature drop were beneficial for improving SO3 removal efficiency. In Indonesia, the power generation sector is the primary source of carbon emissions, largely due to the heavy reliance on coal-fired power plants, which account for 60% of electricity production. Reducing these emissions is essential to achieve national clean energy transition goals. However, achieving this initiative requires careful consideration, especially regarding the complex interactions among multiple stakeholders in the Indonesian electricity market. The electricity market in Indonesia is characterized by its non-competitive and heavily regulated structure. This market condition often requires the PLN, as the system operator, to address multi-objective and multi-constraint problems, necessitating optimization in the generation dispatch scheduling scheme to ensure a secure, economical, and low-carbon power system operation. This research introduces a multiparadigm approach for GS optimization in a regulated electricity market to support the transition to clean energy. The multiparadigm integrates multi-agent system and system dynamic paradigms to model, simulate, and quantitatively analyze the complex interactions among multiple stakeholders in the Indonesian regulated electricity market. The research was implemented on the Java–Madura–Bali power system using AnyLogic 8 University Researcher Software. The simulation results demonstrate that the carbon policy scheme reduces the system's carbon emissions while increasing the system's cost of electricity. A linear regression for sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between carbon policies and the system's cost of electricity. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers to develop an optimal, acceptable, and reasonable power system operation scheme for all stakeholders in the Indonesian electricity market. In adapting to the double-high development trend of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) receiving-end power systems and solving optimization problems in emergency frequency control (EFC) supporting virtual power plants (VPPs) in large-scale power systems, a parameter estimation method for a VPP frequency response model based on a successive linear programming (SLP) method is proposed. First, a "centralized/decentralized" hierarchical control architecture for VPP participation in EFC is designed. Second, the frequency response characteristics of multiple flexible resources are scientifically analyzed, and the system frequency response (SFR) model and equivalent model of VPP are constructed. Subsequently, parameter estimation of the VPP frequency response model is carried out based on the SLP method, aiming to balance the accuracy and computational efficiency of the model. A novel approach was proposed, utilizing an electrical field and X-ray irradiation to oxidize elemental mercury (Hg0) and encapsulate it within a nanofibrous mat made of Polyamide 6/Chitosan. The X-rays contributed significantly to the conversion of Hg0 into Hg+ by producing electrons through the photoionization of gas molecules. The positive and negative pole electrodes generated an electric field that exerted a magnetic force, resulting in the redirection of oxidized elemental mercury towards the negative pole electrode, which was coupled with a Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofiber mat. The evaluation of the Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofibers exposed to oxidized mercury showed that the mercury, found in the steam of a specially designed filtration device, was captured in two different forms. Firstly, it was chemically bonded with concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 10 ng of Hg in total. Secondly, it was retained on the surface of the Polyamide 6/Chitosan nanofibers with a concentration of 10 microg/m3 of Hg per minute. Nevertheless, a concentration of 10 microg/m3 of mercury is considered significant, given that the emission levels of mercury from each coal power plant typically vary from approximately 4.72 to 44.07 microg/m3. Thus, this research presents a viable approach to reducing mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants, which could result in lower operational expenses and less secondary environmental effects. Most existing coal-fired power plants were designed for sustained operation at full load to maximize efficiency, reliability, and revenue, as well as to operate air pollution control devices at design conditions. Depending on plant type and design, these plants can adjust output within a fixed range in response to plant operating or market conditions. The need for flexibility driven by increased penetration of variable and non-dispatchable power generation, such as wind and solar, is shifting the traditional mission profile of thermoelectric power plants in three ways: more frequent shutdowns when market or grid conditions warrant, more aggressive load ramp rates (rate of output change), and a lower minimum sustainable load, which provides a wider operating range and helps avoid costly plant shutdowns. Recent studies have shown that the flexibility of a coal-fired power plant can be improved by energy storage. The objective of this work was to analyze a set of energy storage options and determine their impact on the flexibility and economics of a representative coal-fired power plant. The effect of three energy storage systems integrated with a coal power plant on plant flexibility and economics was investigated. The results obtained in this project show that energy storage systems integrated with a thermal power plant improve plant flexibility and participation in the energy and ancillary services markets, which improves plant financial performance. This study addresses the challenges faced by coal-fired power plants in adapting to energy fluctuations following the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid. The flexible operation of thermal power plants has become a focal point in academic research. A numerical model of a coal-fired power plant was developed in this study using the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm based on actual operation data analysis. The combined PSO-LSTM approach improved the accuracy of the model by optimizing parameters. Validation of the model was performed using a Dymola physical simulation model, demonstrating that the PSO-LSTM coupled numerical model accurately simulates coal-fired power plant operations with a goodness of fit reaching 0.998. Overall system performance for comprehensively evaluating the rate and accuracy of unit operation is proposed. Furthermore, the model's capability to simulate the load variation process of automatic generation control (AGC) under different load command groups was assessed, aiding in optimizing the best load command group. Optimization experiments show that the performance index of output power is optimal within the experimental range when the set load starts and stops are the same and the power of load command γ = 1.8. Specifically, the 50–75% Turbine Heat Acceptance (THA) load rise process enhanced the overall system performance index by 55.1%, while the 75–50% THA load fall process improved the overall system performance index by 54.2%. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the PSO-LSTM approach in optimizing thermal power plant operations and enhancing system performance under varying load conditions. The study of particle deposition in bends is always a continuous challenge in various engineering and industrial applications. New types of channels with special microstructures on the surfaces can be effective in modifying the flow field structure as well as particle deposition in channels. In this study, a 90° circular bend with a convex dimple structure was used, and the flow field and the deposition of particles in the channel were analyzed; the Stokes numbers (St) used were 0.016, 0.355 and 1.397. The reliability of the model was ensured by mesh-independence validation as well as speed validation. In a 90° bend channel with convex dimples, the temperature distribution, particle deposition distribution, flow structure and secondary flow were examined. The effects of the number of convex dimples and St in the bend on the flow field structure and particle deposition characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the main factors affecting the deposition characteristics of particles in bends are St, gravitational deposition, thermophoretic force, turbulent vortex clusters and secondary flow distribution. The effect of St is more pronounced, with the deposition rate increasing as the St increases, and the deposition location of the particles is mainly clustered on the outside of the bend structure of the elbow. Combustion power plants emit carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a major contributor to climate change. Direct emissions measurement is cost-prohibitive globally, while reporting varies in detail, latency, and granularity. To fill this gap and greatly increase the number of power plants worldwide with independent emissions monitoring, we developed and applied machine learning (ML) models using power plant water vapor plumes as proxy signals to estimate electric power generation and CO2 emissions using Landsat 8, Sentinel-2, and PlanetScope imagery. Our ML models estimated power plant activity on each image snapshot, then an aggregation model predicted plant utilization over a 30-day period. Lastly, emission factors specific to region, fuel, and plant technology were used to convert the estimated electricity generation into CO2 emissions. Models were trained with reported hourly electricity generation data in the US, Europe, and Australia and were validated with additional generation and emissions data from the US, Europe, Australia, Türkiye, and India. All results with sufficiently large sample sizes indicate that our models outperformed the baseline approaches. In validating our model results against available generation and emissions reported data, we calculated the root mean square error as 1.75 TWh (236 plants across 17 countries over 4 years) and 2.18 Mt CO2 (207 plants across 17 countries over 4 years), respectively. Ultimately, we applied our ML method to plants that constitute 32% of global power plant CO2 emissions, as estimated by Climate TRACE, averaged over the period 2015–2022. This dataset is the most comprehensive independent and free-of-cost global power plant point-source emissions monitoring system currently known to the authors and is made freely available to the public to support global emissions reduction. Condensable particulate matter (CPM) is different from filterable particulate matter (FPM), which could escape from air pollution control devices (APCDs) and pose a great threat to the environment and human health. Thus, modeling and experimental studies were conducted on CPM particle behavior and removal, in a cold electrode electrostatic precipitator (CE−ESP) coupled with a electric field, temperature field and concentration field. A multi−field force coupling model was then established that was based on the mechanical behavior of particles inside the CE−ESP. The results showed that temperature field was beneficial to depositing small size particles and that, the greater the temperature gradient, the higher CPM's removal efficiency. While the electric field tended to gather larger size particles, the greater the voltage provided, the higher the removal efficiency for CPM and FPM. In the multi−field, the augmented coagulation and the removal efficiencies of both CPM and FPM increased significantly, reaching 89% and 98%, respectively. Subsequently, experiments were conducted by a self−made CE−ESP device, which showed the removal efficiencies of CE−ESP of a CPM in a multi−field were 91% and 81% for a coal−fired power plant and a waste incineration plant, respectively. The disposal of tea leaves discarded in the tea beverage market and clinker from coal-fired power plants has an impact on the environment; however, there are no reported cases of their combination for composting. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of adding clinker from a coal-fired power plant to compost based on tea leaves, an organic waste product, on the composting rate and quality. The tea leaves-only compost was designated as Clinker 0%, and composts with 20% (w/w), 40% (w/w), and 60% (w/w) tea leaves supplemented with clinker were designated as Clinker 20, 40, and 60%, respectively. Each mixed material was placed in a 35 L polypropylene container with a lid and allowed to compost for 95 days. The composting rate was evaluated by the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in hot water extract and plant tests using juvenile komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis). The addition of clinker reduced the COD at the beginning of composting by 52.0, 74.3, and 86.7% in Clinker 20, 40, and 60%, respectively, compared to Clinker 0%. Furthermore, root elongation one month after composting was inhibited by Clinker 0% (60.1% relative to distilled water), but not by the addition of clinker (91.7–102.7% relative to distilled water). To date, most studies focus on the ecological and environmental effects of land-based photovoltaic (PV) power plants, while there is a dearth of studies examining the impacts of water-based PV power plants. The effects of a fishery complementary PV power plant, a kind of water-based PV technology, on the near-surface meteorology and aquaculture water environment were investigated in coastal aquaculture ponds in southeast China. The results showed that PV prevented 89~93% of the solar radiation on the surface of the pond, resulting in an average reduction in water temperature of 1.5 °C and a substantial decrease in light intensity of 94%. Furthermore, it weakened the wind speed by 41~50% and elevated the surface air temperature by an average of 0.6 °C. In addition, PV power results in an impressive decrease in chlorophyll-α of 72~94% and a notable increase in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations of 8~24%. PV power also reduced the concentration of labile phosphate, active silicate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total organic carbon. However, the PV power did not have a substantial influence on the concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. To overcome the limitations of NO2 electrochemical sensors, including their inaccurate measurements and short working life, when used around coal-fired power plants, we investigated the influence of coal-fired fly ash deposition on the measurement error of NO2 electrochemical sensors through experimental tests. The morphological characteristics and pellet diameter distribution of coal-fired fly ash pellets were determined via scanning electron microscopy. The sedimentation velocity of coal-fired fly ash pellets in the air was determined through theoretical calculations of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. Additionally, the effect of the deposition of coal-fired fly ash on the measurement error of NO2 electrochemical sensors was determined through experimental tests. The test results show that the minimum and maximum measurement errors of the NO2 electrochemical gas sensor were 8.015% and 30.35%, respectively, after a deposition duration of 30 days with 30 mg/m3 coal-fired fly ash. This demonstrates that coal-fired fly ash deposition is the cause of the inaccurate measurements and short working life of these sensors. Even though there are numerous CO2 capture technologies (such as chemical and physical absorption), investigators are still trying to come up with novel methods that can minimize the energy requirements for their integration into thermal power plants, as well as the CAPEX and OPEX expenses. In this work, the technical and financial aspects of integrating two-stage polymeric membranes into a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 330 MW were examined. The study researched the membrane post-combustion CO2 capture process utilizing CHEMCAD version 8.1 software with several parameters and an expander to decrease the total cost. The simulation showed promising results regarding reducing power consumption after using an expander for both a high capture rate (>90%) and a CO2 concentration of more than 95%. An important method that coal-fired power plants use to realise low-cost zero discharge of desulfurisation wastewater (FGD wastewater) is to utilise wet slag removal systems. However, the high Cl− content of FGD wastewater in wet slag removal systems causes environmental damage. In this study, the corrosion behaviour of the inner guide wheel material, 20CrMnTi, was studied using dynamic weight loss and electrochemical methods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy spectroscopy were used to analyse the organisational and phase changes on the surfaces and cross sections of the samples at different Cl− concentrations. The corrosion rate increased with the Cl− concentration up to 20 g/L, but it decreased slightly when the Cl− concentration exceeded 20 g/L. In all the cases, the corrosion rate exceeded 0.8 mm/a. The corrosion product film density initially increased and then decreased as the Cl− concentration increased. The corrosion products comprised mainly α-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH, β-FeOOH, Fe3O4, and γ-Fe2O3. The accumulation of uncollected fly ash from flue gas in post-combustion CO2 capture processes is a significant concern in current coal-fired power plants due to its potential impact on the performance of CO2 absorbent and absorption towers. In order to determine the effect of fly ash on the mass transfer performance of CO2 absorption into monoethanolamine (MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) aqueous solutions, experimental studies were carried out using a small-sized packed tower equipped with θ-ring random packing. These studies were conducted under various operating parameters, including solution temperature, liquid/gas ratio (L/G), packing height, and fly ash concentration. The results show that the effect of fly ash on the outlet CO2 concentration was primarily observed during the initial stages of the experimental process. Moreover, the presence of fly ash leads to a reduction in the volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient (KGav) when using MEA and DEA solution, and increasing the fly ash concentration further exacerbates this negative impact. However, the effect of fly ash on the reduction in KGav is not significantly related to its chemical composition but rather depends on the operational parameters. With increasing solution temperature, liquid/gas ratio (L/G), and packing height, the KGav values for different solutions exhibit an upward trend. The negative effect of fly ash on KGav remains relatively stable for MEA as solution temperature and packing height increase. Compared to MEA, fly ash has a greater negative effect on DEA solution under the same experimental conditions. The analysis reveals that the detrimental effect of fly ash on KGav primarily stems from its ability to alter the distribution state of the absorption liquid within the packed tower.
