With the advancement in living standards, there has been a significant surge in the quantity and diversity of household waste. To safeguard the environment and optimize resource utilization, there is an urgent demand for effective and cost-efficient intelligent waste classification methodologies. This study presents MRS-YOLO (Multi-Resolution Strategy-YOLO), a waste detection and classification model. The paper introduces the SlideLoss_IOU technique for detecting small objects, integrates RepViT of the Transformer mechanism, and devises a novel feature extraction strategy by amalgamating multi-dimensional and dynamic convolution mechanisms. These enhancements not only elevate the detection accuracy and speed but also bolster the robustness of the current YOLO model. Validation conducted on a dataset comprising 12,072 samples across 10 categories, including recyclable metal and paper, reveals a 3.6% enhancement in mAP50% accuracy compared to YOLOv8, coupled with a 15.09% reduction in volume. Furthermore, the model demonstrates improved accuracy in detecting small targets and exhibits comprehensive detection capabilities across diverse scenarios. Fruit fly species classification is a fine-grained task as there is a small gap between species. In order to effectively identify and improve the recognition of fruit flies, a fine-grained image-recognition method based on a multi-channel self-attention mechanism was studied and a network framework for fine-grained image recognition based on deep learning was designed in this paper. In this framework, long-term and short-term memory networks are used to extract the underlying features in fruit fly fine-grained images. By inputting the underlying features in the multi-channel self-attention mechanism module, the global and local attention feature maps can be obtained.The weighted attention feature map can also be obtained by multiplying the weight of each channel and the attention feature map. The fine-grained image features of fruit flies were obtained by summing the weighted attention feature map. A softmax classifier was used to process the features and complete the recognition of the fruit fly fine-grained images. Two fine-grained image datasets of fruit flies were applied as experimental objects. Dataset 1 and Dataset 2 contain 11,778 images and 20,580 images from 46 different categories of fruit flies, respectively. The Kappa coefficient was used as the evaluation index to identify fruit fly images with different targets using the method proposed herein. The experimental results showed that, as the number of attention channels increased, the Kappa coefficient gradually increased, suggesting an improvement in the accuracy of fine-grained image recognition. The fine-grained image features extracted by introducing a multi-channel self-attention mechanism exhibited more distinct boundaries with a small amount of overlap, demonstrating strong feature extraction capabilities. When dealing with fine-grained images with either simple or complex backgrounds, the method proposed in this paper has good performance and generalization ability. In the field of object detection, small object detection in remote sensing images is an important and challenging task. Due to limitations in size and resolution, most existing methods often suffer from localization blurring. To address the above problem, this paper proposes a remote sensing small object detection network based on adaptive channel attention and large kernel adaptation. This approach aims to enhance multi-channel information mining and multi-scale feature extraction to alleviate the problem of localization blurring. To enhance the model's focus on the features of small objects in remote sensing at varying scales, this paper introduces an adaptive channel attention block. This block applies adaptive attention weighting based on the input feature dimensions, guiding the model to better focus on local information. To mitigate the loss of local information by large kernel convolutions, a large kernel adaptive block is designed. The block dynamically adjusts the surrounding spatial receptive field based on the context around the detection area, improving the model's ability to extract information around remote sensing small objects. To address the recognition confusion during the sample classification process, a layer batch normalization method is proposed. This method enhances the consistency analysis capabilities of adaptive learning, thereby reducing the decline in the model's classification accuracy caused by sample misclassification. Supervised learning has been the cornerstone of many successful medical imaging applications. However, its reliance on large labeled datasets poses significant challenges, especially in the medical domain, where data annotation is time-consuming and expensive. In response, self-supervised learning (SSL) has emerged as a promising alternative, leveraging unlabeled data to learn meaningful representations without explicit supervision. This paper provides a detailed overview of supervised learning and its limitations in medical imaging, underscoring the need for more efficient and scalable approaches. The study emphasizes the importance of the area under the curve (AUC) as a key evaluation metric in assessing SSL performance. In recent years, with the rapid development of deep learning technology, a large number of excellent convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been proposed, many of which are based on improvements to classical methods. Based on the Inception family of methods, depthwise separable convolution was applied to Xception to achieve lightweighting, and Inception-ResNet introduces residual connections to accelerate model convergence. However, existing improvements for the Inception module often neglect further enhancement of its receptive field, while increasing the receptive field of CNNs has been widely studied and proven to be effective in improving classification performance. Motivated by this fact, three effective expansion modules are proposed in this paper. The first expansion module, Inception expand (Inception-e) module, is proposed to improve the classification accuracy by concatenating more and deeper convolutional branches. To reduce the number of parameters for Inception e, this paper proposes a second expansion module—Equivalent Inception-e (Eception) module, which is equivalent to Inception-e in terms of feature extraction capability, but which suppresses the growth of the parameter quantity brought by the expansion by effectively reducing the redundant convolutional layers; on the basis of Eception, this paper proposes a third expansion module—Lightweight Eception (Lception) module, which crosses depthwise convolution with ordinary convolution to further effectively reduce the number of parameters. The three proposed modules have been validated on the Cifar10 dataset. The experimental results show that all these extensions are effective in improving the classification accuracy of the models, and the most significant effect is the Lception module, where Lception (rank = 4) on the Cifar10 dataset improves the accuracy by 1.5% compared to the baseline model (Inception module A) by using only 0.15 M more parameters. With the increasing demand for high-resolution images, handling high-dimensional image data has become a key aspect of intelligence algorithms. One effective approach is to preserve the high-dimensional manifold structure of the data and find the accurate mappings in a lower-dimensional space. However, various non-sparse, high-energy occlusions in real-world images can lead to erroneous calculations of sample relationships, invalidating the existing distance-based manifold dimensionality reduction techniques. Many types of noise are difficult to capture and filter in the original domain but can be effectively separated in the frequency domain. Inspired by this idea, a novel approach is proposed in this paper, which obtains the high-dimensional manifold structure according to the correlationships between data points in the frequency domain and accurately maps it to a lower-dimensional space, named Frequency domain-based Manifold Dimensionality Reduction (FMDR). In FMDR, samples are first transformed into frequency domains. Then, interference is filtered based on the distribution in the frequency domain, thereby emphasizing discriminative features. Subsequently, an innovative kernel function is proposed for measuring the similarities between samples according to the correlationships in the frequency domain. With the assistance of these correlationships, a graph structure can be constructed and utilized to find the mapping in a low-dimensional space. To further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, FMDR is employed for the semi-supervised classification problems in this paper. Experiments using public image datasets indicate that, compared to baseline algorithms and state-of-the-art methods, our approach achieves superior recognition performance. In recent years, classification and identification of Earth's surface materials has been a challenging research topic in the field of earth science and remote sensing (RS). Although deep learning techniques have achieved some results in remote sensing image classification, there are still some challenges for multimodal remote sensing data classification, such as information redundancy between multimodal remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose a multimodal remote sensing data classification method IFF-Net based on irregular feature fusion, called IFF-Net. The IFF-Net architecture utilizes weight-shared residual blocks for feature extraction while maintaining the independent batch normalization (BN) layer. During the training phase, the redundancy of the current channel is determined by evaluating the judgement factor of the BN layer. If this judgment factor falls below a predefined threshold, it indicates that the current channel information is redundant and should be substituted with another channel. Sparse constraints are imposed on some of the judgment factors in order to remove extra channels and enhance generalization. Furthermore, a module for feature normalization and calibration has been devised to leverage the spatial interdependence of multimodal features in order to achieve improved discrimination. Two standard datasets are used in the experiments to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Automotive radar is one of the key sensors for intelligent driving. Radar image sequences contain abundant spatial and temporal information, enabling target classification. For existing radar spatiotemporal classifiers, multi-view radar images are usually employed to enhance the information of the target and 3D convolution is employed for spatiotemporal feature extraction. These models consume significant hardware resources and are not applicable to real-time applications. In this paper, RadarTCN, a novel lightweight network, is proposed that achieves high-accuracy online target classification using single-view radar image sequences only. In RadarTCN, 2D convolution and 3D-TCN are employed to extract spatiotemporal features sequentially. To reduce data dimensionality and computational complexity, a multi-layer max pooling down-sampling method is designed in a 2D convolution module. Meanwhile, the 3D-TCN module is improved through residual pruning and causal convolution is introduced for leveraging the performance of online target classification. The experimental results demonstrate that RadarTCN can achieve high-precision online target recognition for both range-angle and range-Doppler map sequences. Problems related to ventral hernia repairs (VHR) are very common, and evaluating them using computational methods can assist in selecting the most appropriate treatment. This study is based upon data from 3339 patients from different European countries observed during the last 12 years (2012–2023), which were collected by specialists in hernia surgery. Most patients underwent standard surgical procedures, with a growing trend towards laparoscopic surgery. This paper focuses on statistically evaluating the treatment methods in relation to patient age, body mass index (BMI), and the type of repair. Appropriate mathematical methods are employed to extract and classify the selected features, with emphasis on computational and machine-learning techniques. The paper presents surgical hernia treatment statistics related to patient age, BMI, and repair methods. The main conclusions point to mean groin hernia repair (GHR) complications of 19% for patients in the database. The accuracy of separating GHR mesh surgery with and without postoperative complications reached 74.4% using a two-layer neural network classification. Robotic surgeries represent 22.9% of all the evaluated hernia repairs. Handloom textile products play an essential role in both the financial and cultural landscape of natives, necessitating accurate and efficient methods for authenticating against replicated powerloom textiles for the protection of heritage and indigenous weavers' economic viability. This paper presents a new approach to the automated identification of handloom textiles leveraging a deep metric learning technique. A labeled handloom textile dataset of 25,166 images was created by collecting handloom textile samples of six unique types, working with indigenous weavers in Assam, Northeast India. The proposed method achieved remarkable success by acquiring biased feature representations that facilitate the effective separation of different fiber types in a learned feature space. Through extensive experimentation and comparison with baseline models, our approach demonstrated superior efficiency in classifying handloom textiles with an accuracy of 97.8%. Modern condition monitoring and industrial fault prediction have advanced to include intelligent techniques, aiming to improve reliability, productivity, and safety. The integration of ultrasonic signal processing with various machine learning (ML) models can significantly enhance the efficiency of industrial fault diagnosis. In this paper, ultrasonic data are analyzed and applied to ensemble ML algorithms. Four methods for reducing dimensionality are employed to illustrate differences among acoustic faults. Different features in the time domain are extracted, and predictive ensemble models including a gradient boosting classifier (GB), stacking classifier (Stacking), voting classifier (Voting), Adaboost, Logit boost (Logit), and bagging classifier (Bagging) are implemented. To assess the model's performance on new data during experiments, k-fold cross-validation (CV) was employed. Target recognition and fine-grained ship classification in remote sensing face challenges of high inter-class similarity and sample scarcity. A transfer fusion-based ship image harmonization algorithm is proposed to overcome these challenges. This algorithm designs a feature transfer fusion strategy based on the combination of a region-aware instantiation and attention mechanism. Adversarial learning is implemented through an image harmony generator and discriminator module to generate realistic remote sensing ship harmony images. Furthermore, the domain encoder and domain discriminator modules are responsible for extracting feature representations of the foreground and background, and further align the ship foreground with remote sensing ocean background features through feature discrimination. Compared with other advanced image conversion techniques, our algorithm delivers more realistic visuals, improving classification accuracy for six ship types by 3% and twelve types by 2.94%, outperforming Sim2RealNet. Finally, a mixed dataset containing data augmentation and harmonizing samples and real data was proposed for the fine-grained classification task of remote sensing ships. Evaluation experiments were conducted on eight typical fine-grained classification algorithms, and the accuracy of the fine-grained classification for all categories of ships was analyzed. The classification of Stropharia rugoso-annulata is currently reliant on manual sorting, which may be subject to bias. To improve the sorting efficiency, automated sorting equipment could be used instead. However, sorting naked mushrooms in real time remains a challenging task due to the difficulty of accurately identifying, locating and sorting large quantities of them simultaneously. Models must be deployable on resource-limited devices, making it challenging to achieve both a high accuracy and speed. This paper proposes the APHS-YOLO (YOLOv8n integrated with AKConv, CSPPC and HSFPN modules) model, which is lightweight and efficient, for identifying Stropharia rugoso-annulata of different grades and seasons. This study includes a complete dataset of runners of different grades in spring and autumn. To enhance feature extraction and maintain the recognition accuracy, the new multi-module APHS-YOLO uses HSFPNs (High-Level Screening Feature Pyramid Networks) as a thin-neck structure. It combines an improved lightweight PConv (Partial Convolution)-based convolutional module, CSPPC (Integration of Cross-Stage Partial Networks and Partial Convolution), with the Arbitrary Kernel Convolution (AKConv) module. Additionally, to compensate for the accuracy loss due to lightweighting, APHS-YOLO employs a knowledge refinement technique during training. Compared to the original model, the optimized APHS-YOLO model uses 57.8% less memory and 62.5% fewer computational resources. It has an FPS (frames per second) of over 100 and even achieves 0.1% better accuracy metrics than the original model. The kinematics of the human hand exhibit complex and diverse characteristics unique to each individual. Various techniques such as vision-based, ultrasonic-based, and data-glove-based approaches have been employed to analyze human hand movements. However, a critical challenge remains in efficiently analyzing and classifying hand grasp types based on time-series kinematic data. In this paper, we propose a novel sparse coding feature extraction technique based on dictionary learning to address this challenge. Our method enhances model accuracy, reduces training time, and minimizes overfitting risk. We benchmarked our approach against principal component analysis (PCA) and sparse coding based on a Gaussian random dictionary. Our results demonstrate a significant improvement in classification accuracy: achieving 81.78% with our method compared to 31.43% for PCA and 77.27% for the Gaussian random dictionary. The paper presents the comparative analysis of Long short-term memory (LSTM) and one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1-D CNNs) for tool wear classification in chipboard milling processes. The complexity of sequence data in various fields makes selecting the right model for sequence classification very important. This research aims to show the distinct capabilities and performance nuances of LSTM and 1-D CNN models, leveraging their inherent strengths in understanding temporal dependencies and feature extraction, respectively. Through a series of experiments, the study unveils that while both models demonstrate competencies in handling sequence data, the 1-D CNN model, with its superior feature extraction capabilities, achieved the best performance, boasting an accuracy of 94.5% on the test dataset. This paper presents a computational approach for quantifying soybean defects through seed classification using deep learning techniques. To differentiate between good and defective soybean seeds quickly and accurately, we introduce a lightweight soybean seed defect identification network (SSDINet). Initially, the labeled soybean seed dataset is developed and processed through the proposed seed contour detection (SCD) algorithm, which enhances the quality of soybean seed images and performs segmentation, followed by SSDINet. The classification network, SSDINet, consists of a convolutional neural network, depthwise convolution blocks, and squeeze-and-excitation blocks, making the network lightweight, faster, and more accurate than other state-of-the-art approaches. Experimental results demonstrate that SSDINet achieved the highest accuracy, of 98.64%, with 1.15 M parameters in 4.70 ms, surpassing existing state-of-the-art models. Effective feature extraction and selection are crucial for the accurate classification and prediction of hand gestures based on electromyographic signals. In this paper, we systematically compare six filter and wrapper feature evaluation methods and investigate their respective impacts on the accuracy of gesture recognition. The investigation is based on several benchmark datasets and one real hand gesture dataset, including 15 hand force exercises collected from 14 healthy subjects using eight commercial sEMG sensors. A total of 37 time- and frequency-domain features were extracted from each sEMG channel. The benchmark dataset revealed that the minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) feature evaluation method had the poorest performance, resulting in a decrease in classification accuracy. However, the RFE method demonstrated the potential to enhance classification accuracy across most of the datasets. It selected a feature subset comprising 65 features, which led to an accuracy of 97.14%. The Mutual Information (MI) method selected 200 features to reach an accuracy of 97.38%. The Feature Importance (FI) method reached a higher accuracy of 97.62% but selected 140 features. Further investigations have shown that selecting 65 and 75 features with the RFE methods led to an identical accuracy of 97.14%. A thorough examination of the selected features revealed the potential for three additional features from three specific sensors to enhance the classification accuracy to 97.38%. These results highlight the significance of employing an appropriate feature selection method to significantly reduce the number of necessary features while maintaining classification accuracy. Chemical warfare agents pose a serious threat due to their extreme toxicity, necessitating swift the identification of chemical gases and individual responses to the identified threats. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy offers a method for remote material analysis, particularly in detecting colorless and odorless chemical agents. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network utilizing a semi-supervised autoencoder (SSAE) for the classification of chemical gases based on FTIR spectra. In contrast to traditional methods, the SSAE concurrently trains an autoencoder and a classifier attached to a latent vector of the autoencoder, enhancing feature extraction for classification. The SSAE was evaluated on laboratory-collected FTIR spectra, demonstrating a superior classification performance compared to existing methods. Gait, a manifestation of one's walking pattern, intricately reflects the harmonious interplay of various bodily systems, offering valuable insights into an individual's health status. However, the current study has shortcomings in the extraction of temporal and spatial dependencies in joint motion, resulting in inefficiencies in pathological gait classification. In this paper, we propose a Frequency Pyramid Graph Convolutional Network (FP-GCN), advocating to complement temporal analysis and further enhance spatial feature extraction. specifically, a spectral decomposition component is adopted to extract gait data with different time frames, which can enhance the detection of rhythmic patterns and velocity variations in human gait and allow a detailed analysis of the temporal features. Furthermore, a novel pyramidal feature extraction approach is developed to analyze the inter-sensor dependencies, which can integrate features from different pathways, enhancing both temporal and spatial feature extraction. Our experimentation on diverse datasets demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach. Notably, FP-GCN achieves an impressive accuracy of 98.78% on public datasets and 96.54% on proprietary data, surpassing existing methodologies and underscoring its potential for advancing pathological gait classification. In this paper, we present an unprecedented method based on Kohonen networks that is able to automatically recognize partial discharge (PD) classes from phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) diagrams with features of various simultaneous PD patterns. The PRPD diagrams were obtained from the stator windings of a real-world hydro-generator rotating machine. The proposed approach integrates classification probabilities into the Kohonen method, producing self-organizing probability maps (SOPMs). For building SOPMs, a group of PRPD diagrams, each containing a single PD pattern for training the Kohonen networks and single- and multiple-class-featured samples for obtaining final SOPMs, is used to calculate the probabilities of each Kohonen neuron to be associated with the various PD classes considered. At the end of this process, a self-organizing probability map is produced. Probabilities are calculated using distances, obtained in the space of features, between neurons and samples. The so-produced SOPM enables the effective classification of PRPD samples and provides the probability that a given PD sample is associated with a PD class. In this work, amplitude histograms are the features extracted from PRPDs maps. Our results demonstrate an average classification accuracy rate of approximately 90% for test samples. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) need to replicate feature detectors when modeling spatial information, which reduces their efficiency. The number of replicated feature detectors or labeled training data required for such methods grows exponentially with the dimensionality of the data being used. On the other hand, space-insensitive methods are difficult to encode and express effectively due to the limitation of their rich text structures. In response to the above problems, this paper proposes a capsule network (self-attention capsule network, or SA-CapsNet) with a self-attention mechanism for text classification tasks, wherein the capsule network itself, given the feature with the symmetry hint on two ends, acts as both encoder and decoder. In order to learn long-distance dependent features in sentences and encode text information more efficiently, SA-CapsNet maps the self-attention module to the feature extraction layer of the capsule network, thereby increasing its feature extraction ability and overcoming the limitations of convolutional neural networks. In addition, in this study, in order to improve the accuracy of the model, the capsule was improved by reducing its dimension and an intermediate layer was added, enabling the model to obtain more expressive instantiation features in a given sentence. Finally, experiments were carried out on three general datasets of different sizes, namely the IMDB, MPQA, and MR datasets. The accuracy of the model on these three datasets was 84.72%, 80.31%, and 75.38%, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the benchmark algorithm, the model's performance on these datasets was promising, with an increase in accuracy of 1.08%, 0.39%, and 1.43%, respectively. Medium-voltage (MV) cables often experience a shortened lifespan attributed to insulation breakdown resulting from accelerated aging and anomalous operational and environmental stresses. While partial discharge (PD) measurements serve as valuable tools for assessing the insulation state, complexity arises from the presence of diverse discharge sources, making the evaluation of PD data challenging. The reliability of diagnostics for MV cables hinges on the precise interpretation of PD activity. To streamline the repair and maintenance of cables, it becomes crucial to discern and categorize PD types accurately. Traffic accidents on the road lead to serious personal and material damage. Furthermore, preventing secondary accidents caused by traffic accidents is crucial. As various technologies for detecting traffic accidents in videos using deep learning are being researched, this paper proposes a method to classify accident videos based on a video highlight detection network. To utilize video highlight detection for traffic accident classification, we generate information using the existing traffic accident videos. Moreover, we introduce the Car Crash Highlights Dataset (CCHD). This dataset contains a variety of weather conditions, such as snow, rain, and clear skies, as well as multiple types of traffic accidents. We compare and analyze the performance of various video highlight detection networks in traffic accident detection, thereby presenting an efficient video feature extraction method according to the accident and the optimal video highlight detection network. For the first time, we have applied video highlight detection networks to the task of traffic accident classification. In the task, the most superior video highlight detection network achieves a classification performance of up to 79.26% when using video, audio, and text as inputs, compared to using video and text alone. Agriculture plays a vital role in Bangladesh's economy. It is essential to ensure the proper growth and health of crops for the development of the agricultural sector. In the context of Bangladesh, crop diseases pose a significant threat to agricultural output and, consequently, food security. This necessitates the timely and precise identification of such diseases to ensure the sustainability of food production. This study focuses on building a hybrid deep learning model for the identification of three specific diseases affecting three major crops: late blight in potatoes, brown spot in rice, and common rust in corn. The proposed model leverages EfficientNetB0′s feature extraction capabilities, known for achieving rapid high learning rates, coupled with the classification proficiency of SVMs, a well-established machine learning algorithm. This unified approach streamlines data processing and feature extraction, potentially improving model generalizability across diverse crops and diseases. It also aims to address the challenges of computational efficiency and accuracy that are often encountered in precision agriculture applications. The proposed hybrid model achieved 97.29% accuracy. For patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and sleep-related breathing disorders, snoring is quite common, and it greatly interferes with the quality of life for them and for the people surrounding them. For diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, snoring is used as a screening parameter, so the exact detection and classification of snoring sounds are quite important. Therefore, automated and very high precision snoring analysis and classification algorithms are required. In this work, initially the features are extracted from six different domains, such as time domain, frequency domain, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) domain, sparse domain, eigen value domain, and cepstral domain. The extracted features are then selected using three efficient feature selection techniques, such as Golden Eagle Optimization (GEO), Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), and Refined SSA. The selected features are finally classified with the help of eight traditional machine learning classifiers and two proposed classifiers, such as the Firefly Algorithm-Weighted Extreme Learning Machine hybrid with Adaboost model (FA-WELM-Adaboost) and the Capuchin Search Algorithm-Weighted Extreme Learning Machine hybrid with Adaboost model (CSA-WELM-Adaboost). The analysis is performed on the MPSSC Interspeech dataset, and the best results are obtained when the DWT features with the refined SSA feature selection technique and FA-WELM-Adaboost hybrid classifier are utilized, reporting an Unweighted Average Recall (UAR) of 74.23%. Domain information plays a crucial role in sentiment analysis. Neural networks that treat domain information as attention can further extract domain-related sentiment features from a shared feature pool, significantly enhancing the accuracy of sentiment analysis. However, when the sentiment polarity within the input text is inconsistent, these methods are unable to further model the relative importance of sentiment information. To address this issue, we propose a novel attention neural network that fully utilizes domain information while also accounting for the relative importance of sentiment information. In our approach, firstly, dual long short-term memory (LSTM) is used to extract features from the input text for domain and sentiment classification, respectively. Following this, a novel attention mechanism is introduced to fuse features to generate the attention distribution. Subsequently, the input text vector obtained based on the weighted summation is fed into the classification layer for sentiment classification. Brain tumors are a leading cause of death globally, with numerous types varying in malignancy, and only 12% of adults diagnosed with brain cancer survive beyond five years. This research introduces a hyperparametric convolutional neural network (CNN) model to identify brain tumors, with significant practical implications. By fine-tuning the hyperparameters of the CNN model, we optimize feature extraction and systematically reduce model complexity, thereby enhancing the accuracy of brain tumor diagnosis. The critical hyperparameters include batch size, layer counts, learning rate, activation functions, pooling strategies, padding, and filter size. The hyperparameter-tuned CNN model was trained on three different brain MRI datasets available at Kaggle, producing outstanding performance scores, with an average value of 97% for accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Our optimized model is effective, as demonstrated by our methodical comparisons with state-of-the-art approaches. With increasing wafer sizes and diversifying die patterns, automated optical inspection (AOI) is progressively replacing traditional visual inspection (VI) for wafer defect detection. Yet, the defect classification efficacy of current AOI systems in our case company is not optimal. This limitation is due to the algorithms' reliance on expertly designed features, reducing adaptability across various product models. Additionally, the limited time available for operators to annotate defect samples restricts learning potential. Our study introduces a novel hybrid self-training algorithm, leveraging semi-supervised learning that integrates pseudo-labeling, noisy student, curriculum labeling, and the Taguchi method. This approach enables classifiers to autonomously integrate information from unlabeled data, bypassing the need for feature extraction, even with scarcely labeled data. Our experiments on a small-scale set show that with 25% and 50% labeled data, the method achieves over 92% accuracy. Remarkably, with only 10% labeled data, our hybrid method surpasses the supervised DenseNet classifier by over 20%, achieving more than 82% accuracy. On a large-scale set, the hybrid method consistently outperforms other approaches, achieving up to 88.75%, 86.31%, and 83.61% accuracy with 50%, 25%, and 10% labeled data. This work proposes a methodology for noise removal, separation, and classification of partial discharges in electrical system assets. Partial discharge analysis is an essential method for fault detection and evaluation of the operational conditions of high-voltage equipment. However, it faces several limitations in field measurements due to interference from radio signals, television transmissions, WiFi, corona signals, and multiple sources of partial discharges. To address these challenges, we propose the development of a clustering model to identify partial discharge sources and a classification model to identify the types of discharges. New features extracted from pulses are introduced to model the clustering and classification of discharge sources. The methodology is tested in the laboratory with controlled partial discharge sources, and field tests are conducted in substations to assess its practical applicability. The results of laboratory tests achieved an accuracy of 85% in classifying discharge sources. Classifying encrypted traffic is a crucial aspect of network security. However, popular methods face several limitations, such as a reliance on feature engineering and the need for complex model architectures to ensure effective classification. To address these challenges, we propose a method that combines path signature features with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to classify service types within encrypted traffic. Our approach constructs traffic paths using packet size and arrival times. We generate path signature features at various scales using an innovative multi-scale cumulative feature extraction technique. These features serve as inputs for LSTM networks to perform the classification. Notably, by using only 24 sequential packet features in conjunction with LSTM models, our method has achieved significant success in classifying service types within encrypted traffic. Deep learning (DL) models require enormous amounts of data to produce reliable diagnosis results. The superiority of DL models over traditional machine learning (ML) methods in terms of feature extraction, feature dimension reduction, and diagnosis performance has been shown in various studies of fault diagnosis systems. However, data acquisition can sometimes be compromised by sensor issues, resulting in limited data samples. In this study, we propose a novel DL model based on a stacked convolutional autoencoder (SCAE) to address the challenge of limited data. The innovation of the SCAE model lies in its ability to enhance gradient information flow and extract richer hierarchical features, leading to superior diagnostic performance even with limited and noisy data samples. This article describes the development of a fault diagnosis method for a hydraulic piston pump using time–frequency visual pattern recognition. The proposed SCAE model has been evaluated on limited data samples of a hydraulic piston pump. The findings of the experiment demonstrate that the suggested approach can achieve excellent diagnostic performance with over 99.5% accuracy. Additionally, the SCAE model has outperformed traditional DL models such as deep neural networks (DNN), standard stacked sparse autoencoders (SSAE), and convolutional neural networks (CNN) in terms of diagnosis performance. The existing Siamese trackers have achieved increasingly successful results in visual object tracking. However, the interactive fusion among multi-layer similarity maps after cross-correlation has not been fully studied in previous Siamese network-based methods. To address this issue, we propose a novel Siamese network for visual object tracking, named SiamSMN, which consists of a feature extraction network, a multi-scale fusion module, and a prediction head. First, the feature extraction network is used to extract the features of the template image and the search image, which is calculated by a depth-wise cross-correlation operation to produce multiple similarity feature maps. Second, we propose an effective multi-scale fusion module that can extract global context information for object search and learn the interdependencies between multi-level similarity maps. In addition, to further improve tracking accuracy, we design a learnable prediction head module to generate a boundary point for each side based on the coarse bounding box, which can solve the problem of inconsistent classification and regression during the tracking. Grasp classification is pivotal for understanding human interactions with objects, with wide-ranging applications in robotics, prosthetics, and rehabilitation. This study introduces a novel methodology utilizing a multisensory data glove to capture intricate grasp dynamics, including finger posture bending angles and fingertip forces. Our dataset comprises data collected from 10 participants engaging in grasp trials with 24 objects using the YCB object set. We evaluate classification performance under three scenarios: utilizing grasp posture alone, utilizing grasp force alone, and combining both modalities. We propose Glove-Net, a hybrid CNN-BiLSTM architecture for classifying grasp patterns within our dataset, aiming to harness the unique advantages offered by both CNNs and BiLSTM networks. This model seamlessly integrates CNNs' spatial feature extraction capabilities with the temporal sequence learning strengths inherent in BiLSTM networks, effectively addressing the intricate dependencies present within our grasping data. Our study includes findings from an extensive ablation study aimed at optimizing model configurations and hyperparameters. We quantify and compare the classification accuracy across these scenarios: CNN achieved 88.09%, 69.38%, and 93.51% testing accuracies for posture-only, force-only, and combined data, respectively. LSTM exhibited accuracies of 86.02%, 70.52%, and 92.19% for the same scenarios. Notably, the hybrid CNN-BiLSTM proposed model demonstrated superior performance with accuracies of 90.83%, 73.12%, and 98.75% across the respective scenarios. Through rigorous numerical experimentation, our results underscore the significance of multimodal grasp classification and highlight the efficacy of the proposed hybrid Glove-Net architectures in leveraging multisensory data for precise grasp recognition. Breathing is one of the body's most basic functions and abnormal breathing can indicate underlying cardiopulmonary problems. Monitoring respiratory abnormalities can help with early detection and reduce the risk of cardiopulmonary diseases. In this study, a 77 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimetre-wave (mmWave) radar was used to detect different types of respiratory signals from the human body in a non-contact manner for respiratory monitoring (RM). To solve the problem of noise interference in the daily environment on the recognition of different breathing patterns, the system utilised breathing signals captured by the millimetre-wave radar. Firstly, we filtered out most of the static noise using a signal superposition method and designed an elliptical filter to obtain a more accurate image of the breathing waveforms between 0.1 Hz and 0.5 Hz. Secondly, combined with the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature extraction algorithm, K-nearest neighbours (KNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), and HOG support vector machine (G-SVM) were used to classify four breathing modes, namely, normal breathing, slow and deep breathing, quick breathing, and meningitic breathing. Cross-domain scene classification requires the transfer of knowledge from labeled source domains to unlabeled target domain data to improve its classification performance. This task can reduce the labeling cost of remote sensing images and improve the generalization ability of models. However, the huge distributional gap between labeled source domains and unlabeled target domains acquired by different scenes and different sensors is a core challenge. Existing cross-domain scene classification methods focus on designing better distributional alignment constraints, but are under-explored for fine-grained features. We propose a cross-domain scene classification method called the Frequency Component Adaptation Network (FCAN), which considers low-frequency features and high-frequency features separately for more comprehensive adaptation. Specifically, the features are refined and aligned separately through a high-frequency feature enhancement module (HFE) and a low-frequency feature extraction module (LFE). We conducted extensive transfer experiments on 12 cross-scene tasks between the AID, CLRS, MLRSN, and RSSCN7 datasets, as well as two cross-sensor tasks between the NWPU-RESISC45 and NaSC-TG2 datasets, and the results show that the FCAN can effectively improve the model's performance for scene classification on unlabeled target domains compared to other methods. Classifying grapevine varieties is crucial in precision viticulture, as it allows for accurate estimation of vineyard row growth for different varieties and ensures authenticity in the wine industry. This task can be performed with time-consuming destructive methods, including data collection and analysis in the laboratory. In contrast, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a markedly more efficient and less restrictive method for gathering hyperspectral data, even though they may yield data with higher levels of noise. Therefore, the first task is the processing of these data to correct and downsample large amounts of data. In addition, the hyperspectral signatures of grape varieties are very similar. In this study, we propose the use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify seventeen different varieties of red and white grape cultivars. Instead of classifying individual samples, our approach involves processing samples alongside their surrounding neighborhood for enhanced accuracy. The extraction of spatial and spectral features is addressed with (1) a spatial attention layer and (2) inception blocks. The pipeline goes from data preparation to dataset elaboration, finishing with the training phase. The fitted model is evaluated in terms of response time, accuracy and data separability and is compared with other state-of-the-art CNNs for classifying hyperspectral data. Our network was proven to be much more lightweight by using a limited number of input bands (40) and a reduced number of trainable weights (560 k parameters). Hence, it reduced training time (1 h on average) over the collected hyperspectral dataset. In contrast, other state-of-the-art research requires large networks with several million parameters that require hours to be trained. Despite this, the evaluated metrics showed much better results for our network (approximately 99% overall accuracy), in comparison with previous works barely achieving 81% OA over UAV imagery. The phonocardiogram (PCG) can be used as an affordable way to monitor heart conditions. This study proposes the training and testing of several classifiers based on SVMs (support vector machines), k-NN (k-Nearest Neighbor), and NNs (neural networks) to perform binary ("Normal"/"Pathologic") and multiclass ("Normal", "CAD" (coronary artery disease), "MVP" (mitral valve prolapse), and "Benign" (benign murmurs)) classification of PCG signals, without heart sound segmentation algorithms. Two datasets of 482 and 826 PCG signals from the Physionet/CinC 2016 dataset are used to train the binary and multiclass classifiers, respectively. Each PCG signal is pre-processed, with spike removal, denoising, filtering, and normalization; afterward, it is divided into 5 s frames with a 1 s shift. Subsequently, a feature set is extracted from each frame to train and test the binary and multiclass classifiers. Concerning the binary classification, the trained classifiers yielded accuracies ranging from 92.4 to 98.7% on the test set, with memory occupations from 92.7 kB to 11.1 MB. Regarding the multiclass classification, the trained classifiers achieved accuracies spanning from 95.3 to 98.6% on the test set, occupying a memory portion from 233 kB to 14.1 MB. The NNs trained and tested in this work offer the best trade-off between performance and memory occupation, whereas the trained k-NN models obtained the best performance at the cost of large memory occupation (up to 14.1 MB). The classifiers' performance slightly depends on the signal quality, since a denoising step is performed during pre-processing. To this end, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was acquired before and after the denoising, indicating an improvement between 15 and 30 dB. Currently, there is a great deal of interest in multimodal aspect-level sentiment classification using both textual and visual information, which changes the traditional use of only single-modal to identify sentiment polarity. Considering that existing methods could be strengthened in terms of classification accuracy, we conducted a study on aspect-level multimodal sentiment classification with the aim of exploring the interaction between textual and visual features. Specifically, we construct a multimodal aspect-level sentiment classification framework with multi-image gate and fusion networks called MFSC. MFSC consists of four parts, i.e., text feature extraction, visual feature extraction, text feature enhancement, and multi-feature fusion. Firstly, a bidirectional long short-term memory network is adopted to extract the initial text feature. Based on this, a text feature enhancement strategy is designed, which uses text memory network and adaptive weights to extract the final text features. Meanwhile, a multi-image gate method is proposed for fusing features from multiple images and filtering out irrelevant noise. Finally, a text-visual feature fusion method based on an attention mechanism is proposed to better improve the classification performance by capturing the association between text and images. In order to accurately extract and match carbon emission factors from the Chinese textual building materials list and construct a precise carbon emission factor database, it is crucial to accurately classify the textual building materials. In this study, a novel classification model based on text data enhancement and semantic feature extraction is proposed and applied for building materials classification. Firstly, the explanatory information on the building materials is collected and normalized to construct the original dataset. Then, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation and statistical-language-model-based hybrid ensemble data enhancement methods are explained in detail, and the semantic features closely related to the carbon emission factor are extracted by constructed composite convolutional networks and the transformed word vectors. Finally, the ensemble classification model is designed, constructed, and applied to match the carbon emission factor from the textual building materials. The extraction of features and classification of traditional dwellings plays significant roles in preserving and ensuring the sustainable development of these structures. Currently, challenges persist in subjective classification and the accuracy of feature extraction. This study focuses on traditional dwellings in Gansu Province, China, employing a novel model named Improved Swin Transformer. This model, based on the Swin Transformer and parallel grouped Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) branches, aims to enhance the accuracy of feature extraction and classification precision. Furthermore, to validate the accuracy of feature extraction during the prediction process and foster trust in AI systems, explainability research was conducted using Grad-CAM-generated heatmaps. Initially, the Gansu Province Traditional Dwelling Dataset (GTDD) is established. On the constructed GTDD dataset, the Improved Swin Transformer attains an accuracy of 90.03% and an F1 score of 87.44%. Comparative analysis with ResNet-50, ResNeXt-50, and Swin Transformer highlights the outstanding performance of the improved model. The confusion matrix of the Improved Swin Transformer model reveals the classification results across different regions, indicating that the primary influencing factors are attributed to terrain, climate, and cultural aspects. Finally, using Grad-CAM-generated heatmaps for explaining classifications, it is observed that the Improved Swin Transformer model exhibits more accurate localization and focuses on features compared to the other three models. The model demonstrates exceptional feature extraction ability with minimal influence from the surrounding environment. Simultaneously, through the heatmaps generated by the Improved Swin Transformer for traditional residential areas in five regions of Gansu, it is evident that the model accurately extracts architectural features such as roofs, facades, materials, windows, etc. This validates the consistency of features extracted by the Improved Swin Transformer with traditional methods and enhances trust in the model and decision-making. Music genre classification is significant to users and digital platforms. To enhance the classification accuracy, this study proposes a hybrid model based on VMD-IWOA-XGBOOST for music genre classification. First, the audio signals are transformed into numerical or symbolic data, and the crucial features are selected using the maximal information coefficient (MIC) method. Second, an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) is proposed for parameter optimization. Third, the inner patterns of these selected features are extracted by IWOA-optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD). High-precision landcover classification is a fundamental prerequisite for resource and environmental monitoring and land-use status surveys. Imbued with intricate spatial information and texture features, very high spatial resolution remote sensing images accentuate the divergence between features within the same category, thereby amplifying the complexity of landcover classification. Consequently, semantic segmentation models leveraging deep backbone networks have emerged as stalwarts in landcover classification tasks owing to their adeptness in feature representation. However, the classification efficacy of a solitary backbone network model fluctuates across diverse scenarios and datasets, posing a persistent challenge in the construction or selection of an appropriate backbone network for distinct classification tasks. To elevate the classification performance and bolster the generalization of semantic segmentation models, we propose a novel semantic segmentation network architecture, named the aggregated backbone network (ABNet), for the meticulous landcover classification. ABNet aggregates three prevailing backbone networks (ResNet, HRNet, and VoVNet), distinguished by significant structural disparities, using a same-stage fusion approach. Subsequently, it amalgamates these networks with the Deeplabv3+ head after integrating the convolutional block attention mechanism (CBAM). Notably, this amalgamation harmonizes distinct scale features extracted by the three backbone networks, thus enriching the model's spatial contextual comprehension and expanding its receptive field, thereby facilitating more effective semantic feature extraction across different stages. The convolutional block attention mechanism primarily orchestrates channel adjustments and curtails redundant information within the aggregated feature layers. Ensuring a consistently reliable power supply is paramount in power systems. Researchers are engaged in the pursuit of categorizing transmission line failures to design countermeasures for mitigating the associated financial losses. Our study employs a machine learning-based methodology, specifically the Conformer Convolution-Augmented Transformer model, to classify transmission line fault types. This model processes time series input data directly, eliminating the need for expert feature extraction. The training and validation datasets are generated through simulations conducted on a two-terminal transmission line, while testing is conducted on historical data consisting of 108 events that occurred in the Taiwan power system. Due to the limited availability of historical data, they are utilized solely for inference purposes. Our simulations are meticulously designed to encompass potential faults based on an analysis of historical data. A significant aspect of our investigation focuses on the impact of the sampling rate on input data, establishing that a rate of four samples per cycle is sufficient. This suggests that, for our specific classification tasks, relying on lower frequency data might be adequate, thereby challenging the conventional emphasis on high-frequency analysis. Eventually, our methodology achieves a validation accuracy of 100%, although the testing accuracy is lower at 88.88%. The discrepancy in testing accuracy can be attributed to the limited information and the small number of historical events, which pose challenges in bridging the gap between simulated data and real-world measurements. Brain cancer is a life-threatening disease requiring close attention. Early and accurate diagnosis using non-invasive medical imaging is critical for successful treatment and patient survival. However, manual diagnosis by radiologist experts is time-consuming and has limitations in processing large datasets efficiently. Therefore, efficient systems capable of analyzing vast amounts of medical data for early tumor detection are urgently needed. Deep learning (DL) with deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) emerges as a promising tool for understanding diseases like brain cancer through medical imaging modalities, especially MRI, which provides detailed soft tissue contrast for visualizing tumors and organs. DL techniques have become more and more popular in current research on brain tumor detection. Unlike traditional machine learning methods requiring manual feature extraction, DL models are adept at handling complex data like MRIs and excel in classification tasks, making them well-suited for medical image analysis applications. This study presents a novel Dual DCNN model that can accurately classify cancerous and non-cancerous MRI samples. Our Dual DCNN model uses two well-performed DL models, i.e., inceptionV3 and denseNet121. Features are extracted from these models by appending a global max pooling layer. The extracted features are then utilized to train the model with the addition of five fully connected layers and finally accurately classify MRI samples as cancerous or non-cancerous. The fully connected layers are retrained to learn the extracted features for better accuracy. The technique achieves 99%, 99%, 98%, and 99% of accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-scores, respectively. Furthermore, this study compares the Dual DCNN's performance against various well-known DL models, including DenseNet121, InceptionV3, ResNet architectures, EfficientNetB2, SqueezeNet, VGG16, AlexNet, and LeNet-5, with different learning rates. Skin cancer is a prevalent type of malignancy on a global scale, and the early and accurate diagnosis of this condition is of utmost importance for the survival of patients. The clinical assessment of cutaneous lesions is a crucial aspect of medical practice, although it encounters several obstacles, such as prolonged waiting time and misinterpretation. The intricate nature of skin lesions, coupled with variations in appearance and texture, presents substantial barriers to accurate classification. As such, skilled clinicians often struggle to differentiate benign moles from early malignant tumors in skin images. Although deep learning-based approaches such as convolution neural networks have made significant improvements, their stability and generalization continue to experience difficulties, and their performance in accurately delineating lesion borders, capturing refined spatial connections among features, and using contextual information for classification is suboptimal. To address these limitations, we propose a novel approach for skin lesion classification that combines snake models of active contour (AC) segmentation, ResNet50 for feature extraction, and a capsule network with a fusion of lightweight attention mechanisms to attain the different feature channels and spatial regions within feature maps, enhance the feature discrimination, and improve accuracy. We employed the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) optimization algorithm to optimize the model's parameters. The proposed model is implemented on publicly available datasets, namely, HAM10000 and ISIC 2020. The experimental results showed that the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 98% and AUC-ROC of 97.3%, showcasing substantial potential in terms of effective model generalization compared to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches. Deep-learning models play a significant role in modern software solutions, with the capabilities of handling complex tasks, improving accuracy, automating processes, and adapting to diverse domains, eventually contributing to advancements in various industries. This study provides a comparative study on deep-learning techniques that can also be deployed on resource-constrained edge devices. As a novel contribution, we analyze the performance of seven Convolutional Neural Network models in the context of data augmentation, feature extraction, and model compression using acoustic data. The results show that the best performers can achieve an optimal trade-off between model accuracy and size when compressed with weight and filter pruning followed by 8-bit quantization. In adherence to the study workflow utilizing the forest sound dataset, MobileNet-v3-small and ACDNet achieved accuracies of 87.95% and 85.64%, respectively, while maintaining compact sizes of 243 KB and 484 KB, respectively. Constant monitoring is necessary for powdery mildew prevention in field crops because, as a fungal disease, it modifies the green pigments of the leaves and is responsible for production losses. Therefore, there is a need for solutions that assure early disease detection to realize proactive control and management of the disease. The methodology currently used for the identification of powdery mildew disease uses RGB leaf images to detect damage levels. In the early stage of the disease, no symptoms are visible, but this is a point at which the disease can be controlled before the symptoms appear. This study proposes the implementation of a support vector machine to identify powdery mildew on cucurbit plants using RGB images and color transformations. First, we use an image dataset that provides photos covering five growing seasons in different locations and under natural light conditions. Twenty-two texture descriptors using the gray-level co-occurrence matrix result are calculated as the main features. The proposed damage levels are 'healthy leaves', 'leaves in the fungal germination phase', 'leaves with first symptoms', and 'diseased leaves'. The implementation reveals that the accuracy in the L * a * b color space is higher than that when using the combined components, with an accuracy value of 94% and kappa Cohen of 0.7638. In detecting large-scale attacks, deep neural networks (DNNs) are an effective approach based on high-quality training data samples. Feature selection and feature extraction are the primary approaches for data quality enhancement for high-accuracy intrusion detection. However, their enhancement root causes usually present weak relationships to the differences between normal and attack behaviors in the data samples. Thus, we propose a Classification Tendency Difference Index (CTDI) model for feature selection and extraction in intrusion detection. The CTDI model consists of three indexes: Classification Tendency Frequency Difference (CTFD), Classification Tendency Membership Difference (CTMD), and Classification Tendency Distance Difference (CTDD). In the dataset, each feature has many feature values (FVs). In each FV, the normal and attack samples indicate the FV classification tendency, and CTDI shows the classification tendency differences between the normal and attack samples. CTFD is the frequency difference between the normal and attack samples. By employing fuzzy C means (FCM) to establish the normal and attack clusters, CTMD is the membership difference between the clusters, and CTDD is the distance difference between the cluster centers. CTDI calculates the index score in each FV and summarizes the scores of all FVs in the feature as the feature score for each of the three indexes. CTDI adopts an Auto Encoder for feature extraction to generate new features from the dataset and calculate the three index scores for the new features. CTDI sorts the original and new features for each of the three indexes to select the best features. The selected CTDI features indicate the best classification tendency differences between normal and attack samples. The experiment results demonstrate that the CTDI features achieve better detection accuracy as classified by DNN for the Aegean WiFi Intrusion Dataset than their related works, and the detection enhancements are based on the improved classification tendency differences in the CTDI features.
