Background: Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) are a result of disturbances during formation and maturation of the enamel. Evaluating the most-cited DDE papers can provide important tools that point to the gaps and strengths of this important topic in dentistry. Summary: This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers on DDE. Using a combined keyword search strategy, the 100 most-cited papers were selected in the Web of Science Core Collection. Papers that addressed any type of DDE were included. The extracted data were title, number of citations, study theme, authorship, journal, type of DDE, type of dentition (primary or permanent), type of diagnosis, study design, year, and country of publication. The bibliometric networks were generated through VOSviewer software. The 100 papers had a range from 78 to 459 citations. The main themes of studies were etiopathogenesis (53%), prevalence and incidence (22%), and diagnosis (8%). The authors with the highest number of citations were Goodman AH and Rose JC (459 citations). Most articles were published in dental journals (47%). The most studied types of DDE were fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta in the permanent dentition (47%). Observational (24%) and non-systematic reviews (24%) were the most common study designs and ranged from 1977 to 2019. The country with the highest number of publications was the USA (41%). Key Messages: Most of the top 100 DDE papers were about fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta, with top papers from three continents with English as the native language. Background: Many past and ongoing conflicts in the world are associated with memories. The role of emphatic memories is however often neglected in conflict solving. Therefore, this narrative review gives a short introduction to the phenomenon of emphatic memories and implications for counteracting dysfunctional effects of emphatic memories. Summary: Memory has two connotations. One is remembering and knowing (I can remember when I got married) and on the other is reminding and emphasizing memories (I remind my partner of our wedding day). Memories are less a report on the past but result of current emotions and motives. Emphatic memories serve for self-portrayal and distinction from others, self-exculpation, accusation of others, justification of claims. They are regularly reproachful, have an aggressive character, and are distorted and pseudologic. This is also true on a societal level, as memories are used for defining social groups, and by this for political purposes, in order to juxtapose one group against the other. If memories are revoked, they are regularly accompanied with the very emotions, which were associated with the past event. Corresponding behavior is motivated. Many people suffer from memories and associated emotions and dysfunctional behavior, as is well described in the context of post-traumatic stress disorders. Also, social groups can as a whole suffer from negative emotions because of memories, which may go back up to thousand years. To ensure that memories do not adversely affect individuals and social groups, they should best be forgotten, or at least rescripted, in a way that they are disentangled from negative emotions and motives. An important psychological process in this regard is wisdom and forgiveness, which must not be confused with understanding, justification, tolerating, or reconciliation. Wisdom and forgiveness allow persons to close the books, act self-determined, find freedom from external events, and end suffering because of the past. It is a rational and emotional act. In a nuclear or radiological incident, first responders must quickly and accurately measure radiation exposure among civilians as medical countermeasures are radiation dose-dependent and time-sensitive. Although several approaches have been explored to measure absorbed radiation dose, there is an important need to develop point-of-care (POC) bioassay devices that can be used immediately to triage thousands of individuals potentially exposed to radiation. Here we present a proof-of-concept study showing the use of a paper-based vertical flow immunoassay (VFI) to detect radiation dosimetry genes. Using labeled primers during amplification and a multiplex membrane, our results showed that the nucleic acid VFI can simultaneously detect two biodosimetry genes, CDKN1A and DDB2, as well as one housekeeping gene MRPS5. The assay demonstrated good linearity and precision with an inter- and intra-assay coefficient of variance <20% and <10%, respectively. Moreover, the assay showed its ability to discriminate non-irradiated controls (0 Gy) from irradiated samples (1 + 2 Gy) with an overall sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 100% (AUC = 0.8672, 95% CI: 0.723–1.000; p = 0.004). Interestingly, the gene combination also showed a dose-dependent response for 0, 1, and 2 Gy, similar to data obtained by real-time PCR benchmark. These preliminary results suggest that a VFI platform can be used to detect simultaneously multiple genes that can be then quantified, thus offering a new approach for a POC biodosimetry assay that could be rapidly deployed on-site to test a large population and help triage and medical management after radiological event. Background: Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal tumors originating from the smooth muscle cells of the myometrium, constituting the most prevalent pathology within the female genital tract. Uterine sarcomas, although rare, still represent a diagnostic challenge and should be managed in centers with adequate expertise in gynecological oncology. Objectives: This article is aimed to summarize and discuss cutting-edge elements about the diagnosis and management of uterine fibroids and sarcomas. Methods: This paper is a report of the lectures presented in an expert meeting about uterine fibroids and sarcomas held in Palermo in February 2023. Outcome: Overall, the combination of novel molecular pathways may help combine biomarkers and expert ultrasound for the differential diagnosis of uterine fibroids and sarcomas. On the one hand, molecular and cellular maps of uterine fibroids and matched myometrium may enhance our understanding of tumor development compared to histologic analysis and whole tissue transcriptomics, and support the development of minimally invasive treatment strategies; on the other hand, ultrasound imaging allows in most of the cases a proper mapping the fibroids and to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions, which need appropriate management. Conclusions and Outlook: The choice of uterine fibroid management, including pharmacological approaches, surgical treatment, or other strategies, such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), should be carefully considered, taking into account the characteristics of the patient and reproductive prognosis. Introduction: Over the last decade, the emergence and spread of personalized medicine (PM) have defined a substantial revolution in healthcare. In principle, healthcare system sustainability is challenged by the investments required for research and development, as well as the adoption of PM techniques in routine clinical care. The "Integrating China in the International Consortium for Personalized Medicine" (IC2PerMed) EU-funded project aims to integrate China into the "International Consortium for Personalized Medicine" (ICPerMed). IC2PerMed aims to align the EU and China's research agendas in this field to enable a swift development of approaches in the EU and China with strong leverage upon EU-Chinese collaborations. Methods: Within this project, we first mapped relevant policies on PM in both the EU and China, and then we involved European and Chinese experts in PM in workshops and Delphi surveys in order to identify relevant priorities for the implementation of PM in sustainable healthcare. Results: As a result of this process, we identified nine overarching priorities, each addressing specific aspects of the sustainability of healthcare systems and PM implementation, with the main goal of supporting policymakers in integrating PM approaches in the EU and China. Discussion/conclusion: The implementation of PM in health systems is appealing in terms of improved accuracy in diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of disease, as well as reduction of the side effects resulting from inefficient use of drugs. Research, development, and implementation of needed techniques require time and resources that can slow the adoption of PM in healthcare systems. Background: More than a century ago, experimental work and clinical observations revealed the functional communication between the brain and the peripheral immune system. This is documented on the one hand by studies first demonstrating the effects of catecholamines on the circulation of leukocytes in experimental animals and humans, and on the other hand via the work of Russian physiologist Ivan Petrovic Pavlov and his coworkers, reporting observations that associative learning can modify peripheral immune functions. This work later fell into oblivion since little was known about the endocrine and immune system's function and even less about the underlying mechanisms of how learning, a central nervous system activity, could affect peripheral immune responses. Summary: In this article, we embark on a fascinating exploration of the historical trajectory of behaviorally conditioned immune responses. Background: Based on the new data from the primary analysis of the OPTIC (Optimizing Ponatinib Treatment in CP-CML) trial on dose optimization of ponatinib in patients with chronic phase (CP)-CML, the German consensus paper on ponatinib published in 2020 (Saussele S et al., Acta Haematol. 2020) has been updated in this addendum. Summary: Focus is on the update of efficacy and safety of ponatinib, reflecting the new data set, as well as the update of the benefit-risk assessment and recommendations for ponatinib starting dose in CP-CML – provided that the decision to use ponatinib has already been made. Furthermore, based on OPTIC and additional empirical data, the expert panel collaborated to develop a decision tree for ponatinib dosing, specifically for intolerant and resistant patients. The recommendations on cardiovascular management have also been updated based on the most recent 2021 guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) on cardiovascular disease prevention in clinical practice. Introduction: Cochlear implantation is the standard treatment for severe to profound hearing loss. While cochlear implant (CI) users can communicate effectively in quiet environments, speech understanding in noise remains challenging. Bimodal hearing, combining a CI in one ear and a hearing aid (HA) in the other, has shown advantages over unilateral electrical hearing, especially for speech understanding in noisy conditions. Beamforming is a technique used to improve speech understanding in noise by detecting sound direction and enhancing frontal (speech) sounds while attenuating background noise. One specific beamformer, Stereozoom, combines signals from microphones in both ears to create a focused beam toward the front resulting in a binaural beamformer (BB), in order to improve speech intelligibility in noise for bilateral and bimodal CI users. Methods: A prospective crossover study involving 17 bimodal CI users was conducted, and participants were tested with various device configurations (CI, HA, CI + HA) with and without BB. Speech recognition testing with the Dutch/Flemish matrix test was performed in a sound-attenuated booth with diffuse noise to simulate realistic listening conditions. Results: The results showed a statistically significant benefit of bimodal hearing over the CI configuration and showed a statistical significant benefit of BB for the CI and CI + HA configuration. The benefit of BB in the HA configuration was not statistically significant probably due to the higher variance. The benefit of BB in the three configurations did not differ statistically significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, bimodal hearing offers advantages for speech understanding in noise for CI users. BB provides a benefit in various device configurations, leading to improved speech intelligibility when speech comes from the front in challenging listening environments. Introduction: Penile metastases (PMs) are a rare clinical presentation mainly related to advanced stages of disease. Considering the low incidence, an optimal treatment approach has not yet been defined; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy (RT) are different options used in the vast majority with palliative intent. The advances in modern RT can represent an innovative tool in PM management and a curative option. This paper aimed to report the case of a PM patient treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and perform a systematic literature review of current evidence on the RT approach to PM. Case Presentation: We reported the case of an 80-year-old patient with PM from primary bladder cancer. Following the surgical approach for the primary tumor, evidence of PM was shown, and the patient was admitted to SBRT treatment on PM after an adjuvant RT course on the pelvis. A 25 Gy in 5-fraction SBRT treatment was performed, and a complete clinical response was shown at the first follow-up. A PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase systematic review was carried out. The search strategy terms were [(“penile metastasis”/exp OR “penile metastasis” OR (penile AND (“metastasis”/exp OR metastasis))) AND (“radiotherapy”/exp OR radiotherapy)] and only original articles up to October 24, 2023 were considered. Conclusion: A total of 174 studies were obtained using the previously mentioned search strategy, and the analysis was performed on 15 papers obtained following the complete selection process. All reported evidence was focused on the palliative approach of PM, showing good results in terms of symptom control. The potential role of modern RT in the management of PM has yet to be defined. Background: Genome Mapping Technologies (optical and electronic) use ultra-high molecular weight DNA to detect structural variation and have application in constitutional genetic disorders, hematological neoplasms, and solid tumors. Genome mapping can detect balanced and unbalanced structural variation, copy number changes, and haplotypes. The technique is analogous to chromosomal microarray analysis, although genome mapping has the added benefit of being able to detect and ascertain the nature of more abnormalities in a single assay than array, karyotyping, or FISH alone. Key Messages: This paper describes a specific nomenclature for genome mapping that can be used by diagnostic and research centers to report their findings accurately. An international nomenclature is essential for patient results to be understood by different healthcare providers as well as for clear communication in publications and consistency in databases. Summary: Genome mapping can detect aneuploidy, balanced and unbalanced structural variation, as well as copy number changes. The Standing Committee for the International System for Human Cytogenomic Nomenclature (ISCN) recognised there was a need for a specific nomenclature for genome mapping that encompasses the range of abnormalities detected by this technique. Background: Low professional confidence and perceived competence create tangible barriers to integrating sustainable food systems (SFS) and diets into dietetic practice. One opportunity to facilitate more systemic integration into dietetic education and training is to include these concepts in professional standards. To better understand the barrier of low professional confidence and perceived competence for engagement with SFS-related practice, the purpose of this research was to investigate dietetic training standards for SFS content and to highlight opportunities for growth within the profession. Questions posed by this research are: (1) how, if at all, are SFS and diets articulated in dietetic training standards, and (2) to what level of cognitive complexity? Methods: A content analysis of dietetic training standards documents was conducted between 15 April and 15 September 2021. Search terms included 'sustain*' or 'sustainable', 'food systems' and/or 'diets'. Extracted data with applicable SFS content were analysed for level of cognitive complexity requirements. Results: Of 47 National Dietetics Associations, researchers obtained 23 dietetic training standards documents, of which 16 included SFS-related content. The majority of documents used broad descriptors of the concepts, with little granularity and at a lower level of cognitive complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While more species are being identified as cultural on a regular basis, stark differences between human and animal cultures remain. Humans are more richly cultural, with group-specific practices and social norms guiding almost every element of our lives. Furthermore, human culture is seen as cumulative, cooperative, and normative, in contrast to animal cultures. One hypothesis to explain these differences is grounded in the observation that human children across cultures appear to spontaneously over-imitate silly or causally irrelevant behaviors that they observe. The few studies on over-imitation in other species are largely taken as evidence that spontaneous over-imitation is not present in other species. This leads to the over-imitation hypothesis – that the differences between human culture and animal cultures can be traced to the human unique tendency to over-imitate. In this paper, we analyze the current state of the literature on animal over-imitation and challenge the adequacy of the over-imitation hypothesis for the differences between humans and animal cultures. To make this argument, we first argue that the function of human over-imitation is norm-learning and that over-imitation, like skill-learning, should be subject to selective social learning effects. Then we review the empirical evidence against animal over-imitation and argue that these studies do not take into account the relevant variables given the normative and selective nature of over-imitation. We then analyze positive empirical evidence of over-imitation in great apes and canids from the experimental literature and conclude that the current body of evidence suggests that some canids and primates may have the capacity for over-imitation. This paper offers a methodological suggestion for how to study animal over-imitation, and a theoretical suggestion that over-imitation might be much more widely found among species. The larger implication for claims about human uniqueness suggests that if we do find widespread evidence of over-imitation across species, many of the current theories of human uniqueness that focus on human hyper-cooperation or social norms may have only identified a difference of degree, not of kind, between humans and other animals. Introduction: With the rapid development of treatment modalities for obesity management, there is an increasing demand for guidance to facilitate the prioritization of interventions. In 2020, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare started the process of producing the first national guidelines for obesity care directed to decision makers who allocate resources to the best knowledge-based care. The main aim of this paper was to describe the systematic development of these guidelines, designed to guarantee uniformly high standards of care throughout the whole country. Methods: The standardized procedures of the National Board of Health and Welfare were applied to construct guidelines in a systematic and transparent way, including priority setting of recommendations and quality indicators to evaluate the progress of implementation. The process involved independent expert committees including professionals and patient representatives, and the guidelines were reviewed through an open public consultation. Results: National guidelines were issued in 2023, encompassing a broad scope, from identification and diagnosis to multiple treatment modalities, embedded in a life-course perspective from pregnancy to the elderly, as well as highlighting the need for improved knowledge and competence of health care providers. Conclusions: National guidelines for improved standard care and evidence-based and efficient use of health care resources for obesity treatment can be developed in a systematic way with professionals and patient representatives. A recent paper published in the European Addiction Research journal highlighted the discrepancies in addiction medicine and psychology training across European countries. The paper specifically mentioned Belgium as having no specific training and only four academics working on addictive disorders. However, further investigation revealed that the situation in the French-speaking part of Belgium is less dire than described in the paper. Three universities in this region have research groups focusing on addiction research, and courses related to addiction are routinely provided to students. Additionally, there are inter-university diplomas available for medical professionals and a dense network of care for addictive disorders in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Despite these strengths, challenges remain in terms of the education of caretakers specialized in addiction and the quality of treatment offered. Proposed solutions include improving continuous training, reducing the treatment gap, and strengthening preventive laws and policies. Collaboration between French- and Dutch-speaking clinicians and researchers is also crucial for improving addiction treatment in Belgium. [Extracted from the article]

Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant tumor, so we need a convenient and objective way to diagnose and treat HCC. We discuss the current situation, progress, hotspots, and existing problems of Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) in HCC, which can provide new ideas for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HCC. Methods: We adopt Excel 2019 software and visual analysis tools based on Web of Science database search. This manuscript uses VOSviewer, Co-Occurrence13.3 (COOC13.3) software to conduct overall trend analysis, synonym merging, frequency of countries, journals, institutions, funds, dissimilarity matrices, co-occurrence matrices, bimodal matrices, coupling matrices, cluster analysis of topic evolution time zone graphs. Results: A total of 610 papers were included, and the number of papers output showed an overall upward trend. ALBI has been valued by the industry in HCC and plays an important role in diagnosing and treating HCC, even better than the classic Child-Pugh (C-P) grade. At the same time, hot spots in the treatment of HCC and other applications of ALBI were discovered. Conclusion: ALBI score is a convenient and objective liver function evaluation index, which plays an important role in the prediction of patient survival rate and prognosis. Introduction: The standard way of using tests for compatibility of genetic markers with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) assumption as a means of quality control in genetic association studies (GAS) is to carry out this step of preliminary data analysis with the sample of non-diseased individuals only. We show that this strategy has no rational basis whenever the genotype-phenotype relation for a marker under consideration satisfies the assumption of codominance. Methods: The justification of this statement is obtained through rigorous analytical arguments. Results: The key result of the paper is that there holds the following proposition: under the codominance model, the genotype distribution of a diallelic marker is in HWE among the controls if and only if the same is true for the cases. Conclusion: The major practical consequence of that theoretical result is that under the codominance model, testing for HWE should be done both for cases and controls aiming to establish the combined (intersection) hypothesis of compatibility of both underlying genotype distributions with the HWE assumption. A particularly useful procedure serving this purpose is obtained through applying the confidence-interval inclusion rule derived by Wellek, Goddard, and Ziegler (Biom J. 2010; 52:253–270) to both samples separately and combining these two tests by means of the intersection-union principle. Introduction: Joint linkage and association (JLA) analysis combines two disease gene mapping strategies: linkage information contained in families and association information contained in populations. Such a JLA analysis can increase mapping power, especially when the evidence for both linkage and association is low to moderate. Similarly, an association analysis based on haplotypes instead of single markers can increase mapping power when the association pattern is complex. Methods: In this paper, we present an extension to the GENEHUNTER-MODSCORE software package that enables a JLA analysis based on haplotypes and uses information from arbitrary pedigree types and unrelated individuals. Our new JLA method is an extension of the MOD score approach for linkage analysis, which allows the estimation of trait-model and linkage disequilibrium (LD) parameters, i.e., penetrance, disease-allele frequency, and haplotype frequencies. LD is modeled between alleles at a single diallelic disease locus and up to three diallelic test markers. Linkage information is contributed by additional multi-allelic flanking markers. We investigated the statistical properties of our JLA implementation using extensive simulations, and we compared our approach to another commonly used single-marker JLA test. To demonstrate the applicability of our new method in practice, we analyzed pedigree data from the German National Case Collection for Familial Pancreatic Cancer (FaPaCa). Results: Based on the simulated data, we demonstrated the validity of our JLA-MOD score analysis implementation and identified scenarios in which haplotype-based tests outperformed the single-marker test. The estimated trait-model and LD parameters were in good accordance with the simulated values. Our method outperformed another commonly used JLA single-marker test when the LD pattern was complex. The exploratory analysis of the FaPaCa families led to the identification of a promising genetic region on chromosome 22q13.33, which can serve as a starting point for future mutation analysis and molecular research in pancreatic cancer. Conclusion: Our newly proposed JLA-MOD score method proves to be a valuable gene mapping and characterization tool, especially when either linkage or association information alone provide insufficient power to identify the disease-causing genetic variants. Introduction: The GNB1 (guanine nucleotide-binding protein, β1) gene encodes for the ubiquitous β1 subunit of heterotrimeric G proteins, which are associated with G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). GNB1 mutations cause a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a broad clinical spectrum. A novel variant has recently been confirmed in a case of rod-cone dystrophy. Case Presentation: We describe the second confirmed case of a classical rod-cone dystrophy associated with a mutation located in exon 6 of GNB1 [NM_002074.5:c.217G>C, p.(Ala73Pro)] in a 56-year-old patient also presenting mild intellectual disability, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and truncal obesity. Conclusion: This paper confirms the role of GNB1 in the pathogenesis of a classic rod-cone dystrophy and highlights the importance of including this gene in the genetic analysis panel for inherited retinal diseases. Introduction: Long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency, typically inherited as a recessive trait, is a genetic condition predominantly observed in Central and Eastern Europe, with birth prevalence in Poland amounting to 1/118,336. In most European countries, e.g., in Poland since 2014, this disorder is included in newborn screening. Case Presentation: This paper presents the ophthalmic symptoms of long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency in three pediatric patients. Visual acuity testing, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed and data were collected over several years (2017–2022). In case 1, a female born in 2010, exhibited abnormalities in the central part of the posterior pole, mainly in the macula, and included choriocapillaris atrophy and severe disruption of the outer retinal layer. Case 2, a female born in 2012, presented with progressive shortsightedness and choroid atrophy documented with angio-OCT. Case 3, a male born in 2013, experienced recurrent hospitalizations due to metabolic decompensations and presented with mild myopia, thinning of the choroid layer, and slight pigment dispersion with macular sparing. Conclusion: The main ophthalmic symptoms of LCHAD deficiency were choroidal atrophy, disorganization of the outer retinal layer, and myopia. Choroidal atrophy and pigment dispersion were consistently the earliest signs of LCHAD-associated chorioretinopathy. Although the progression of chorioretinopathy in each case resulted from metabolic decompensation, one documented case revealed that not every metabolic crisis results in ophthalmological changes. Introduction: In this paper, we report a case of visual impairment during treatment with sunitinib in a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Methods: Retrospective chart review was used. Case Presentation: We describe a 74-year-old male with metastatic renal cell carcinoma who was treated with sunitinib and experienced severe loss of visual acuity due to serous retinal detachment and intraretinal fluid. Upon discontinuation of sunitinib, the retinal fluid resolved, and visual acuity was restored. Conclusion: Serous retinal detachment has been described as a side effect of sunitinib use. Introduction: Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) can mimic glaucoma and consequently cause difficulties in differential diagnosis. The purpose of this paper was to summarize differences in diagnostic tests that can help perform a correct diagnosis. Methods: The search strategy was performed according to the PRISMA 2009 guidelines, and four databases were used: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Totally, 772 references were eligible; 39 were included after screening with respect to inclusion criteria that included English language and published in the 20 years before search date. Results: Ninety percent (n = 35) of included studies used optical coherence tomography (OCT). Glaucomatous eyes had a significantly greater cup area, volume and depth, cup-to-disk ratio, a lower rim volume and area, and a thinner Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in glaucomatous eyes occurred primarily at the superotemporal, inferotemporal, and inferonasal sectors, while AION eyes demonstrated mostly superonasal thinning. Glaucoma eyes showed greater macular ganglion cell layer thickness, except at the inferotemporal sector. OCT angiography measurements demonstrated a significant decrease in superficial and deep macular vessel density (VD) in glaucoma compared to AION with similar degree of visual field damage; the parapapillary choroidal VD was spared in AION eyes compared to glaucomatous eyes. Conclusion: By use of OCT imaging, optic nerve head parameters seem most informative to distinguish between glaucoma and AION. Although both diseases affect the RNFL thickness, it seems to do so in different sectors. Differences in structure and vascularity of the macula can also help in making the differential diagnosis. Introduction: Malignant melanoma most commonly occurs in the skin. Primary malignant melanoma of endometrium is quite rare. Its diagnosis depends on clinical characteristics and pathological examination. It usually exhibits high degree of tumor histology, early onset of distant metastases, and unfavorable prognoses. Case Presentation: In this paper, we report a case of a 73-year-old woman with primary malignant melanoma of endometrium. This patient denied a history of nevus removal or any family medical history of cancer. She was admitted to the hospital for irregular vaginal bleeding after menopause and performed an endometrial biopsy. Pathological of the scrapings suggested malignant melanoma. She subsequently underwent a radical surgery. The final pathology diagnosis was primary malignant melanoma of endometrium, and BRAF gene mutation was detected. The tumor staged as IVB according to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification. Thus, she then started adjuvant chemotherapy. This patient is currently on oral targeted therapy and is still being followed up. Conclusion: Mucosal melanoma is infrequent, and primary malignant melanoma of endometrial is a rare subtype. To the best of our knowledge, malignant melanoma originating from endometrium has never been reported before. It has a high degree of malignancy and is prone to early metastasis. This review explores the current landscape and future directions of deprescribing and polypharmacy practices in Jordan. The prevalence of polypharmacy, defined as the concurrent use of multiple medications by an individual, has been increasing in recent years due to various factors, such as population aging and the greater availability of medications. However, polypharmacy can lead to adverse drug events, suboptimal medication adherence, increased healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Deprescribing, on the other hand, involves the discontinuation or reduction of unnecessary or potentially harmful medications to improve patient outcomes. The findings presented in this review highlight the current state of deprescribing and polypharmacy practices in Jordan, including factors influencing their prevalence. Additionally, it discusses the challenges healthcare professionals face in implementing deprescribing strategies and identifies potential solutions for enhancing these practices in Jordanian healthcare settings. Moreover, this paper provides insights into future directions for deprescribing and polypharmacy practices in Jordan. Migrating cells in tissues are often known to exhibit collective swirling movements. In this paper, we develop an active vertex model with polarity dynamics based on contact inhibition of locomotion (CIL). We show that under this dynamics, the cells form steady-state vortices in velocity, polarity, and cell stress with length scales that depend on polarity alignment rate (ζ), self-motility (v0), and cell-cell bond tension (λ). When the ratio λ/v0 becomes larger, the tissue reaches a near jamming state because of the inability of the cells to exchange their neighbors, and the length scale associated with tissue kinematics increases. A deeper examination of this jammed state provides insights into the mechanism of sustained swirl formation under CIL rule that is governed by the feedback between cell polarities and deformations. To gain additional understanding of how active forcing governed by CIL dynamics leads to large-scale tissue dynamics, we systematically coarse-grain cell stress, polarity, and motility and show that the tissue remains polar even on larger length scales. Overall, we explore the origin of swirling patterns during collective cell migration and obtain a connection between cell-level dynamics and large-scale cellular flow patterns observed in epithelial monolayers. Background: Anaphylaxis represents the most severe end of the spectrum of allergic reactions. Frequent elicitors of anaphylaxis are insects, foods, and drugs. This paper summarizes recent development with regard to emerging and novel elicitors of anaphylaxis. Summary: Food allergens on the rise include pulses (like pea, chickpea), seeds (hemp, chia), nuts (cashew), pseudograins (buckwheat, quinoa), fruits, and microalgae. Novel foods are foods that were not consumed to any significant extent in the European Union before May 1997, which includes four edible insects (mealworm, migratory locust, house cricket, and buffalo worm). Recent investigations have pointed out the risk of anaphylaxis associated with the consumption of yellow mealworm for people allergic to shellfish and house dust mites. In Europe, fire ants (mostly Solenopsis invicta) and Vespa velutina nigrithorax represent invasive species, which account for increasing numbers of anaphylactic reactions. Also, several new drugs, especially biologicals, have been associated with anaphylaxis. Introduction: In this paper, we wish to elucidate alterations of basic existential and intersubjective configurations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) through the phenomenon of Anderssein (“feeling different”). Anderssein is an important yet neglected notion from German psychiatry, referring to a specific sense of feeling profoundly different from others occurring in SSD. Although phenomenological-psychopathological research mentions it as an aspect of the core disturbance of SSD (namely, “self-disorders”), the phenomenon has not yet been explored in empirical or theoretical detail. Method: We present material from a phenomenological-empirical study on the mode and onset of psychosis based on qualitative interviews with 25 patients with SSD. Results: Most of the participants in our study report having felt fundamentally and often ineffably different since childhood and articulate it as a sense of existing “outside” of the shared reality. Intersubjective reality appears progressively unreal or inauthentic, and simultaneously, the patient’s intimate, subjective sphere is permeated by an alien otherness. Importantly, this outside position should be understood carefully as it is often accompanied by the sense of being invaded by social rules, other people’s thoughts, or emotions. Incipient psychosis is described as a gradual extension of precedent alterations of the structures of (inter)subjectivity. Conclusion: We conceptualize the ontological feature of Anderssein as an altered “being in-between” – that is, some sort of halting of the dynamic movement between particularity and intersubjectivity. Background:d-Chiro-inositol is a natural molecule that, in association with its well-studied isomer myo-inositol, may play a role in treating various metabolic and gynecological disorders. Objectives: This perspective seeks to explore the mechanisms and functions of d-chiro-inositol, laying the foundations to discuss its use in clinical practice, across dysmetabolism, obesity, and hormonal dysregulation. Methods: A narrative review of all the relevant papers known to the authors was conducted. Outcome:d-Chiro-inositol acts through a variety of mechanisms, acting as an insulin sensitizer, inhibiting the transcription of aromatase, in addition to modulating white adipose tissue/brown adipose tissue transdifferentiation. These different modes of action have potential applications in a variety of therapeutic fields, including PCOS, dysmetabolism, obesity, hypoestrogenic/hyperandrogenic disorders, and bone health. Introduction: Ultrasonography in the first trimester of pregnancy offers an early screening tool to identify high risk pregnancies. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have the potential to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and assist the clinician in early risk stratification. Objective: The objective of the study was to conduct a systematic review of the use of AI in imaging in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review by searching in computerized databases PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar from inception to January 2024. Full-text peer-reviewed journal publications written in English on the evaluation of AI in first-trimester pregnancy imaging were included. Review papers, conference abstracts, posters, animal studies, non-English and non-peer-reviewed articles were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed by using PROBAST. Results: Of the 1,595 non-duplicated records screened, 27 studies were included. Twelve studies focussed on segmentation, 8 on plane detection, 6 on image classification, and one on both segmentation and classification. Five studies included fetuses with a gestational age of less than 10 weeks. The size of the datasets was relatively small as 16 studies included less than 1,000 cases. The models were evaluated by different metrics. Duration to run the algorithm was reported in 12 publications and ranged between less than one second and 14 min. Only one study was externally validated. Conclusion: Even though the included algorithms reported a good performance in a research setting on testing datasets, further research and collaboration between AI experts and clinicians is needed before implementation in clinical practice. Introduction: Active aging emphasizes optimizing health and participation for a better quality of life as people age. This paper explores the significant impact of hearing loss and balance disorders on the elderly. Age-related hearing loss is thought to contribute to communication breakdown and cognitive dysfunctions. The "hearing and balance in healthy aging" project focuses on early detection, mitigation, and advocacy. Objectives include exploring epidemiological traits, evaluating overall well-being impact, proving positive intervention effects, and advocating societal care for the elderly with hearing loss and balance disorders, aiming to reduce their broader impact on cognition, independence, and sociability. Methods: This study is observational, prospective study. Subjects over 55 years old with a follow-up every year or every 2 years were divided into three groups, according to their hearing and balance: within the normal range (group A), detected and not treated (group B), and detected and treated (group C). At each visit, they underwent a series of tests or questionnaires, evaluating different areas: hearing, balance, cognition, depression, dependence, tinnitus, loneliness, health. Results: A total of 710 patients were included in the study. The distribution of patients was as follows: group A – 210 patients, group B – 302 patients, and group C – 198 patients. Significant differences were found between the three groups related to age, sex, educational level, bilingualism, and work activity. In group C, there was a higher percentage of males, older than in groups A and B, and the percentage of individuals with a university education was lower (28%), as was the rate of bilingualism (23%). In terms of hearing, significant differences were found in the three groups in the mean PTA, speech discrimination in quiet, and the HINT test, with worse results for group C. Only patients in group C presented a perception of hearing impairment, and the handicap caused by hearing impairment worsened from group A to C. Concerning balance, both tests performed (TuGT and DHI) revealed increased difficulty in maintaining autonomous walking from group A to C, which, again, exhibited the worst results, with statistically significant differences across the group. Analysis about cognition revealed significant differences in DSST questionnaires and in TMT scores, where group C had the worst scores. In HUI3 questionnaire scores, the differences between each and every group were statistically significant, with group C showing moderate disability. Conclusion: This extensive analysis, encompassing a considerable number of subjects, reveals significant findings that have important implications for the early prevention of hearing loss and its consequent consequences. At the same time, these data represent an initial exploration, which raises the need for in-depth examinations of additional factors and longer follow-up to continue contributing insights and knowledge for a healthy aging. Introduction: Foot problems, including musculoskeletal problems, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and dermatologic pathology are common in older adults and are associated with an increased risk of falling. Multicomponent podiatry interventions have been shown to reduce the incidence of falls. This paper aimed to identify older adults requiring podiatry input in a Falls and Balance clinic; to describe the model of foot health care they receive; to explore cross-sectional associations between foot problems and function and ultimately demonstrate the role of podiatry input in the multidisciplinary management of falls risk. Methods: Cohort study of patients attending a Falls and Balance Clinic for Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment. Demographic information was collected and functional independence, mobility, foot problems, and footwear were assessed in the clinic. Results: One-hundred and two patients were included; median age 79.3 (73–84.3) years, 68.6% female, 93.1% residing independently, 62.7% used a gait aid. Podiatry referrals were made in 80.4% of cases, with muscle weakness being the most common problem identified (90.2%); 74.8% were found to be wearing inappropriate footwear. Most patients received footwear education and half were prescribed foot and ankle strengthening exercises. Hallux and lesser toe weakness were associated with lower Short Physical Performance Battery scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The majority of older adults in the Falls and Balance Clinic required podiatry input, with foot weakness and inappropriate footwear being common reasons for referral. Those with weakness of the hallux and lesser toes had poorer balance and mobility, which is known to be associated with greater falls risk. Background: Elevated mortality rates in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) are partly due to adverse remodeling of multiple organs, which may lead to cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, kidney failure, or other conditions. MetS symptoms, such as obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, associated with insulin and leptin resistance, are recognized as major cardiovascular risk factors that adversely affect the heart. Summary: Pathological cardiac remodeling is accompanied by endothelial cell dysfunction which may result in diminished coronary flow, dysregulated oxygen demand/supply balance, as well as vessel rarefaction. The reduced number of vessels and delayed or inhibited formation of collaterals after myocardial infarction in MetS heart may be due to unfavorable changes in endothelial cell metabolism but also to altered expression of vascular endothelial growth factor molecules, their receptors, and changes in signal transduction from the cell membrane, which severely affect angiogenesis. Native American individuals are more frequently affected by cerebrovascular diseases including stroke and vascular cognitive decline. Additionally, we will investigate the role novel stroke biomarkers may play in stroke risk in this population. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a scarcity of resources with various effects on the care of cancer patients. This paper provides an English summary of a German guideline on prioritization and resource allocation for colorectal and pancreatic cancer in the context of the pandemic. Based on a selective literature review as well as empirical and ethical analyses, the research team of the CancerCOVID Consortium drafted recommendations for prioritizing diagnostic and treatment measures for both entities. The final version of the guideline received consent from the executive boards of nine societies of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF), 20 further professional organizations and 22 other experts from various disciplines as well as patient representatives. The guiding principle for the prioritization of decisions is the minimization of harm. Prioritization decisions to fulfill this overall goal should be guided by (1) the urgency relevant to avoid or reduce harm, (2) the likelihood of success of the diagnostic or therapeutic measure advised, and (3) the availability of alternative treatment options. In the event of a relevant risk of harm as a result of prioritization, these decisions should be made by means of a team approach. Gender, age, disability, ethnicity, origin, and other social characteristics, such as social or insurance status, as well as the vehemence of a patient's treatment request and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status should not be used as prioritization criteria. The guideline provides concrete recommendations for (1) diagnostic procedures, (2) surgical procedures for cancer, and (3) systemic treatment and radiotherapy in patients with colorectal or pancreatic cancer within the context of the German healthcare system. Introduction: The correlation between diabetes and stroke has been studied extensively in epidemiological research. Here, we used bibliometric software to visualize and analyze the literature related to diabetic stroke to provide an overview of the current state of research, hotspots, and future trends in the field. Methods: Based on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, we collected studies related to diabetic stroke from 2007 to December 2022. We used CiteSpace (version 6.1.R5), VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica to create knowledge maps and conduct visual analyses on authors, countries, institutions, cited references, and keywords, and Origin for statistical analysis. Results: We included a total of 5,171 papers on diabetic stroke from the WoSCC database. Overall, there was a steady increase in the number of publications, with a high number of emerging scientists. The USA was the most productive and influential country, which dominated national collaborations. The most common subject category was "neurology." In total, 12 major clusters were generated from the cited references. Keyword analysis showed that keywords related to poststroke injury and treatment are those with the highest burst intensity and latest burst time. Conclusions: Individual disease treatment remains a hot topic, and how to balance acute stroke treatment and glycemic control is currently a difficult clinical problem. Background: Clinical outcomes in gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) are generally excellent, but GTD is a rare and complex condition that requires specialist information and support to offer a gold standard of care. Across Europe, specialist nurses and/or midwives are increasingly common in the GTD multidisciplinary team to work alongside medical professionals in a holistic model of care; however, the role is sometimes non-existent or can vary significantly between GTD centres. Objectives: The aim of the European Organisation for Treatment of Trophoblastic Diseases' (EOTTD) is to harmonise best practice in Europe. To provide a basis for the European standardisation of best practice nursing care in GTD, a group of European GTD nurses/midwives composed guidelines for minimal requirements and optimal nursing care of GTD patients. Methods: Members of the EOTTD member countries with nursing representation attended multiple workshops, both virtual and in person, and guidelines were created by consensus and evidence where available. Outcome: 16 nurses and 1 midwife from 4 countries (England, Ireland, Sweden, and the Netherlands) contributed. The group created flow diagrams for treatment and screening patients, showing minimum and best practice nursing care for patients with GTD. Conclusion: Despite the many different models of care and resources available to GTD services, this consensus working group has provided a set of guidelines to drive forward a patient focused holistic model of care for GTD patients. This is an original paper, whereby no such guidelines in GTD nursing have been developed before. The development of new extracorporeal blood purification (EBP) techniques has led to increased application in clinical practice but also inconsistencies in nomenclature and misunderstanding. In November 2022, an international consensus conference was held to establish consensus on the terminology of EBP therapies. It was agreed to define EBP therapies as techniques that use an extracorporeal circuit to remove and/or modulate circulating substances to achieve physiological homeostasis, including support of the function of specific organs and/or detoxification. Specific acute EBP techniques include renal replacement therapy, isolated ultrafiltration, hemoadsorption, and plasma therapies, all of which can be applied in isolation and combination. Intervening in White youths' ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development during adolescence can support the development of positive anti-racist ideologies and behaviors that challenge privilege and oppression, increase awareness of and reduce implicit bias, and embrace positive intergroup contact attitudes; yet, little is known within developmental science regarding how White adolescents develop their ERI within the United States' sociohistorical context. Thus, this paper reviews the current literature on White ERI development and applies the Integrative Model (Garcia Coll et al., 1996), through its keen attention to how structures of power, privilege, and oppression have a direct impact on various environments and experiences for young people, to White youths' ERI development. The social stratification of whiteness, school ethnic-racial socialization, color-evasive and anti-racist adapting cultural systems, and ethnic-racial socialization in White families are explored as mechanisms that impact White adolescents' ERI development within a macrosystem characterized by white supremacy. Introduction: Balance and postural control are related to hearing and hearing loss, but whether they can be improved with hearing aid use in older adults is not clear. We systematically reviewed controlled studies in which balance and hearing were tested in experienced older hearing aid users to determine the potential effects of hearing aid use on balance. Methods: The review was pre-registered in PROSPERO and performed in accordance with PRISMA. The question, inclusion, and exclusion criteria were defined using the Population, Intervention, Control, Outcomes and Study design (PICOS) framework. Older adults with hearing loss and no experience with hearing aids, or balance tests conducted without hearing aids in hearing aid users served as controls. Results: A total of 803 studies were screened, eight of which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in the final review. Five of the eight studies found a significant correlation between the use of hearing aids and the outcomes of the balance tests. The quality of the studies was limited or moderate. Key Discussion: The role of hearing aids in balance and postural control is unclear because of the quality of the papers and the sparse reporting of hearing status and hearing aids quality of fitting and use. Introduction: Little is known about the cost-effectiveness of government policies that support primary care physicians to provide comprehensive chronic disease management (CDM). This paper aimed to estimate the potential cost-effectiveness of CDM policies over a lifetime for long-time survivors of stroke. Methods: A Markov model, using three health states (stable, hospitalised, dead), was developed to simulate the costs and benefits of CDM policies over 30 years (with 1-year cycles). Transition probabilities and costs from a health system perspective were obtained from the linkage of data between the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry (cohort n = 12,368, 42% female, median age 70 years, 45% had CDM claims) and government-held hospital, Medicare, and pharmaceutical claims datasets. Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were obtained from a comparable cohort (n = 512, 34% female, median age 69.6 years, 52% had CDM claims) linked with Medicare claims and death data. A 3% discount rate was applied to costs in Australian dollars (AUD, 2016) and QALYs beyond 12 months. Probabilistic sensitivity analyses were used to understand uncertainty. Results: Per-person average total lifetime costs were AUD 142,939 and 8.97 QALYs for those with a claim, and AUD 103,889 and 8.98 QALYs for those without a claim. This indicates that these CDM policies were costlier without improving QALYs. The probability of cost-effectiveness of CDM policies was 26.1%, at a willingness-to-pay threshold of AUD 50,000/QALY. Conclusion: CDM policies, designed to encourage comprehensive care, are unlikely to be cost-effective for stroke compared to care without CDM. Introduction: Cavernomas are vascular lesions with a genetic heritage that can be spotted on the central nervous system. Whenever these lesions are localized in eloquent regions, surgical resection is not recommended. In this type of situation, Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (GKSRS) could be a feasible option for treating patients. Thus, we aimed to explore the outcomes associated with this procedure. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of reconstructed time-to-event data based on Kaplan-Meier curves. A thorough search was conducted on PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Embase databases targeting papers that provided information regarding hemorrhagic outcomes associated with GKSRS through Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: After a systematic search in the specific databases, seven studies were included in this review. Notably, a total of 1,071 patients had 1,104 cavernomas treated by GKSRS. Assessment of short-term and long-term post-procedure outcomes was performed, with the estimated overall events-free rate at 2 years being 89.8% (95% CI: 87.7–91.5), while, at 10 years, the estimated overall events-free rate was 71.3% (95% CI: 67.2–75.1). Conclusion: GKSRS seems to be a good alternative for the control of symptomatic events in early and long-term follow-up, despite the need for further investigation provided by future studies. Introduction: Critical care nephrology is a subspecialty that merges critical care and nephrology in response to shared pathobiology, clinical care, and technological innovations. To date, there has been no description of the highest impact articles. Accordingly, we systematically identified high impact articles in critical care nephrology. Methods: This was a bibliometric analysis. The search was developed by a research librarian. Web of Science was searched for articles published between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2020. Articles required a minimum of 30 citations, publication in English language, and reporting of primary (or secondary) original data. Articles were screened by two reviewers for eligibility and further adjudicated by three experts. The "Top 100" articles were hierarchically ranked by adjudication, citations in the 2 years following publication and journal impact factor (IF). For each article, we extracted detailed bibliometric data. Risk of bias was assessed for randomized trials by the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Analyses were descriptive. Results: The search yielded 2,805 articles. Following initial screening, 307 articles were selected for full review and adjudication. The Top 100 articles were published across 20 journals (median [IQR] IF 10.6 [8.9–56.3]), 38% were published in the 5 years ending in 2020 and 62% were open access. The agreement between adjudicators was excellent (intraclass correlation, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.84–0.99). Of the Top 100, 44% were randomized trials, 35% were observational, 14% were systematic reviews, 6% were nonrandomized interventional studies and one article was a consensus document. The risk of bias among randomized trials was low. Common subgroup themes were RRT (42%), AKI (30%), fluids/resuscitation (14%), pediatrics (10%), interventions (8%), and perioperative care (6%). The citations for the Top 100 articles were 175 (95–393) and 9 were cited >1,000 times. Conclusion: Critical care nephrology has matured as an important subspecialty of critical care and nephrology. These high impact papers have focused largely on original studies, mostly clinical trials, within a few core themes. Background: Prostate brachytherapy (BT) techniques have evolved over the past century. This paper aimed to preserve our collective memory of history and the early development of its technique. We searched articles in PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords referring to authors, dates, and BT technical details, including different radioactive sources and country-specific publications. We reviewed the work published by Holm and Aronowitz. The digital library Internet Archives was used to retrieve original journal articles, science newspaper printings, and government reports, which allowed us to situate the development of BT in its sociopolitical context in Europe and the USA. Our search was conducted in English, French, and German languages. Summary: Early BT methods were developed by European physicians with early access to radium. Technical advancements were made by HH Young, who brought this practice to the USA, where Barringer pioneered the use of radon seeds and low-dose interstitial brachytherapy. While centralized radiotherapy centers, such as Memorial Hospital in New York, emerged for training and research, the high cost of radium and opposing interests made brachytherapy harder to implement in Germany. After World War II, the introduction of man-made radioisotopes allowed experiments with colloidal solutions and new seeds, including I-125. The cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay is a well-established method to assess radiation-induced genetic damage in human cells. This assay has been adapted to imaging flow cytometry (IFC), allowing automated analysis of many cells, and eliminating the need to create microscope slides. Furthermore, to improve the efficiency of assay performance, a small-volume method previously developed was employed. Irradiated human blood samples were cultured, stained, and analyzed by IFC to produce images of the cells. Samples were run using both manual and 96-well plate automated acquisition. Multiple parameter-based image features were collected for each sample, and the results were compared to confirm that these acquisition methods are functionally identical. This paper details the multi-parametric analysis developed and the resulting calibration curves up to 10 Gy. The calibration curves were created using a quadratic random coefficient model with Poisson errors, as well as a logistic discriminant function. The curves were then validated with blinded, irradiated samples, using relative bias and relative mean square error. Overall, the accuracy of the dose estimates was adequate for triage dosimetry (within 1 Gy of the true dose) over 90% of the time for lower doses and about half the time for higher doses, with the lowest success rate between 5 and 6 Gy where the calibration curve reached its peak and there was the smallest change in MN/BNC with dose. This work describes the application of a novel multi-parametric analysis that fits the calibration curves and allows dose estimates up to 10 Gy, which were previously limited to 4 Gy. Introduction: Intracranial carotid artery calcification (ICAC), as a strong contributor to the occurrence of ischemic stroke, might be present in the medial or intimal arterial layer. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) are associated with ICAC; however, its association with new markers of vascular function is less understood. The paper aimed to evaluate the relationship between carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) and ICAC subtypes. Methods: We enrolled 65 patients with ischemic stroke. CF-PWV, systolic, diastolic, mean blood pressure, and pulse pressure were measured within 6 ± 2 days after stroke onset, and CT was performed within 24 h. ICAC on the stroke site was classified by two methods: volume and score based. Tertiles of ICAC volume were determined, and low-grade ICAC (T1) was regarded as a reference. According to the score-based method, (dominant) medial and (dominant) intimal ICAC subtypes were determined. Data were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression. Results: Medial and intimal ICAC subtypes were found in 34 (52%) and 24 (37%) patients, respectively. In 11% of patients, no ICAC calcifications were found. CF-PWV was higher in patients with high-grade ICAC (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.03–2.35, p = 0.035). CF-PWV was higher in patients with the medial ICAC subtype (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.00–2.55, p = 0.049) after adjustment for traditional CVRFs. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that among patients with ischemic stroke, aortic stiffness is independently associated with ICAC and that medial ICAC, compared with intimal ICAC, is accompanied by more advanced aortic stiffness.
