Background: The importance of vaccination in combating the COVID-19 pandemic is widely acknowledged. The aim of this study was (1) to understand how one's vaccine conspiracy beliefs would influence their public health news processing, (2) to examine how specific public health news features (i.e., news frame) would influence message processing, and (3) to examine if there were any differences between Black and White participants in their message processing., Methods: A nationwide online experiment (N = 821) with a 3 (vaccine conspiracy beliefs: high vs. moderate vs. low) × 2 (participants' race: Black vs. White) × 2 (news frames: gain vs. loss) mixed-factorial design was conducted in the United States., Results: Participants' level of vaccine conspiracy beliefs was predictive of their responses to outcome measures. Additionally, Black participants reported higher perceived message effectiveness, more favorable attitudes toward the message, and higher vaccination intentions than White participants. Furthermore, health news that emphasized vaccination benefits produced more favorable attitudes than those emphasizing losses associated with non-vaccination, especially for White participants. Lastly, participants reported more favorable attitudes toward gain-framed health news regardless of their vaccine conspiracy beliefs., Conclusion: It is crucial for health officials to work to find effective media message strategies to combat COVID-19 vaccine conspiracy theories and misinformation. Background: Vaccine champions are common in primary care, but little is known about which champions are effective., Methods: In 2022, we surveyed 2,144 US primary care professionals (PCPs) who reported working with vaccine champions. Respondents rated the champion with whom they worked most closely on their effectiveness at improving vaccination rates., Results: About half (49 %) of PCPs perceived their closest champion as highly effective. PCPs perceived advanced practice providers and nursing staff as highly effective somewhat more often than physicians (52 % and 58 % vs 43 %, p <.001). Objective: To examine mediating effects of sleep quality and duration on the association between T2D and QoL among Medicare beneficiaries 65+., Methods: Data from the Medicare Health Outcome Survey (2015-2020) were used. The outcome was QoL (physical and mental health component-summary scores [PCS and MCS]) measured by the Veterans-Rand-12. The main predictor was diagnosed T2D. Mediators were sleep duration and sleep quality. The effect modifier was race/ethnicity. Structural Equation Modeling was used to estimate moderated-mediating effects of sleep quality and duration across race/ethnicity., Results: Of the 746,400 Medicare beneficiaries, 26.7% had T2D, and mean age was 76 years (SD ± 6.9). Mean PCS score was 40 (SD ± 12.2), and mean MCS score was 54.0 (SD ± 10.2). Associations of T2D with PCS and MCS were negative and significant. For all racial/ethnic groups, those with T2D reported lower PCS. For White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic beneficiaries only, those with T2D reported lower MCS. Hispanic/Latinx (hereafter Hispanic) individuals in the United States (US) experience serious tobacco-related disparities and factors contributing to such disparities need to be adequately identified and clinically addressed. Emotion dysregulation is a key transdiagnostic relevant to smoking. The present cross-sectional investigation sought to test if emotion dysregulation was related to more severe problems during smoking quit attempts (e.g., irritability, weight gain), perceptions of difficulty about quitting, as well as negative and positive beliefs about smoking abstinence in a sample of English-speaking Hispanic adults residing in the US who smoke. Participants included 332 Hispanic adults who engaged in daily cigarette smoking (35.46 years old, 37 % identified as female). Emotion dysregulation was significantly related to more severe problems when quitting and perceived barriers for quitting, as well as negative beliefs about smoking abstinence. Additionally, emotion dysregulation was significantly and negatively related to positive outcomes about smoking abstinence. The amount of change in the various smoking criterion variables accounted for by emotion dysregulation was small (sr 2 range: 0.028-0.085), but evident in adjusted models that accounted for a wide range of factors (e.g., depression, drug use severity). Background: Adolescent nicotine and tobacco product use remains common despite declining smoking rates in the United States, likely due to the emergence of novel products. Concurrent use of multiple products may increase the risk of nicotine dependency and subsequent substance use., Aim: To identify patterns and trends of dual and poly nicotine and tobacco use among adolescents in the US and explore associations of dual and poly nicotine and tobacco use with sociodemographic factors., Methods: 12 years of annual National Youth Tobacco Survey data (2011-2022) from 242,637 respondents were used to examine prevalence trends of different combinations of nicotine or tobacco product use among adolescents in the US using weighted point estimates for each year. Poisson regression models examined sociodemographic factors associated with different patterns of dual and poly-product use from 2011 to 2022., Results: Overall, the prevalence of dual (i.e. at least two products) and poly (i.e. at least three products) use decreased between 2011 and 2021 (from 9.5 % to 2.8 % and from 5.1 % to 1.1 %, respectively), but showed signs of increase between 2021 and 2022 (3.7 % for dual and 1.7 % for poly use). The most common combinations included a combustible product with either a novel or noncombustible product. The risk for dual and poly-product use was higher among non-Hispanic Whites, males, and high school students., Conclusions: Previously declining trends in the prevalence of tobacco/nicotine dual and poly use may have been reversed. Background: Pneumococcal disease (PD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children, particularly in the youngest age groups. This study aimed to assess the incidence of PD over time by age group in young children with commercial or Medicaid coverage in the US., Methods: Episodes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), all-cause pneumonia (ACP), and acute otitis media (AOM) were identified in the MarketScan® Commercial and Medicaid claims databases using diagnosis codes among children aged ≤ 48 months with confirmed date of birth (DoB), at any time during the study period (1998-2019). DoB was assigned using diagnosis codes for birth or delivery using the child's or mother's medical claims to ensure accurate age determination. Annual incidence rates (IRs) were calculated as number of disease episodes/100,000 person-years (PY) for IPD and ACP and episodes/1,000 PY for AOM, for children aged 0-6, 7-12, 12-24, and 25-48 months., Results: Annual IPD IRs declined from 53 to 7 episodes/100,000 PY between 1998 and 2019 in commercially-insured and 58 to 9 episodes/100,000 PY between 2001 and 2019 in Medicaid-insured children. Annual ACP IRs declined from 5,600 to 3,952 episodes/100,000 PY, and from 6,706 to 4,521 episodes/100,000 PY, respectively, over these periods. In both populations, children aged 0-6 months had the highest incidence of IPD and inpatient ACP. Annual AOM IRs declined from 1,177 to 738 episodes/1,000 PY (commercially-insured) and 633 to 624 episodes/1,000 PY (Medicaid-insured), over these periods. IRs were higher in rural vs. urban areas for all disease manifestations., Conclusions: Incidence rates of IPD, ACP, and AOM decreased in children with commercial insurance and Medicaid coverage from 1998 to 2019. However, burden of disease remained substantial, with higher annual IRs for IPD and ACP for Medicaid-insured vs. commercially-insured children. Background: Pregnant persons are at increased risk of severe COVID-19 illness. Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone, including pregnant persons. However, data are limited on the safety of bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy., Objective: To evaluate and summarize reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a national spontaneous reporting system, among pregnant persons who received bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine., Methods: VAERS U.S. reports of adverse events (AEs) in pregnant persons who received the bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine from 9/1/2022-03/31/2023 were identified. Clinicians reviewed all reports and available medical records. AEs of these reports were compared with AEs reported to VAERS following monovalent mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccination in pregnancy., Results: VAERS received 136 reports for pregnant persons who received bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine; 87 (64 %) after BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech), and 48 (35 %) after mRNA-1273 (Moderna); 28 (20.6 %) reports were classified as serious. The most common pregnancy-specific outcomes reported included 12 (8.8 %) spontaneous abortions (<20 weeks gestation), 6 (4.4 %) episodes of preterm delivery, and 5 (3.7 %) reports of preeclampsia. One stillbirth (≥20 weeks gestation) was reported. No maternal or infant deaths were reported. There were 6 reports of AEs in infants, which included 3 reports of admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit: two infants with low birth weight, and one infant with a patent ductus arteriosus and patent foramen ovale. Non-pregnancy-specific adverse events were mostly COVID-19 infection and systemic reactions (e.g., headache, fatigue). COVID-19 booster dose vaccination has been crucial in ensuring protection against COVID-19 including recently predominant Omicron variants. Because vaccines against newer SARS-CoV- 2 variants are likely to be recommended in future, it will be valuable to understand past booster dose uptake among different demographic groups. Using U.S. vaccination data, this study examined intervals between primary series completion and receipt of first booster dose (monovalent or bivalent) during August 2021 - October 2022 among persons ≥12 years of age who had completed a COVID-19 vaccine primary series by October 2021. This paper examines the long-standing and severe public health crisis, the opioid epidemic in the United States, which has been worsening since the mid-1990s. In contrast to previous research, it investigates the broader impacts of this epidemic, particularly on family members and healthcare systems. Using a comprehensive dataset spanning from 1998 to 2010, the study analyzes opioid use at the three-digit ZIP code level, utilizing data from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and individual-level data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) in a two-way fixed effect model. The findings reveal significant negative effects on family caregivers, notably adult children, due to the opioid epidemic. Additionally, opioid exposure is associated with increased healthcare utilization, including home health care and hospital use. Anorectal and oropharyngeal exposures are implicated in sexual transmission of mpox, but authorized assays in the United States are only validated with cutaneous lesion swabs. Diagnostic assays for anorectal and oropharyngeal swabs are needed to address potential future outbreaks. The Cepheid Xpert® Mpox is the first point-of-care assay to receive FDA emergency use authorization in the United States and would be a valuable tool for evaluating these sample types. Our exploratory study demonstrates 100 % positive agreement with our in-house PCR assay for natural positive anorectal and oropharyngeal specimens and 92 % sensitivity with low-positive spiked specimens. The Xpert® assay detected viral DNA in specimens not detected by our reference PCR assay from four participants with mpox DNA at other sites, suggesting it may be more sensitive at low viral loads.
