Utilization of agricultural and food wastes for biohydrogen generation is a hot research topic. In this paper, biohydrogen generation potentials from wheat, maize, barley, rice and potato production, consumption, associated losses, and household food waste generation in Turkey is estimated till 2030 using novel semi-empirical holistic models based on different scenarios. It was estimated that up to 90 thousand tonnes of biohydrogen could be produced from household food wastes in Turkey in 2030. This amount of biohydrogen would be worth 1.5 billon US$ and generate nearly 0.8 billion US$ of net return. In addition, this study clearly shows that there is a great potential for economic gain from agricultural and food waste based biohydrogen generation in Turkey. In conclusion, the methodology developed in this study could be used by researchers around the world to estimate local and national level biohydrogen generation potentials from agricultural and food wastes. Southeastern Turkey perished by the M w 7.8, Kahramanmaras earthquake on February 6, 2023, at 01:17 UT (04:17 LT). The Kahramanmaras-centered event, hit by the break of the East Anatolian Fault Line, is felt in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, and Cyprus on the border of Turkey. Together with Syria, it causes loss of lives and severe damage in 10 cities. This work is dedicated to the people of the region. The study discusses the causality of anomalies by conducting ionospheric anomaly research via the interpolated TEC map obtained from the CODE according to the coordinates of the epicenter of the earthquake (latitude, longitude). The TEC amplitudes are observed by evolving the time-domain TEC map into the frequency-domain with the Fourier transform. The peaks of the amplitudes allow preliminary information for the anomaly days. For the anomaly, the TEC (TECU) boundaries are drawn by the statistical specification. The TEC map outside these boundaries is marked as an anomaly. The causality of abnormalities is tried to be read through the triad of the geomagnetic storm(s) , solar activity , and the earthquake effect. One can find seven anomaly days in the paper. January 30, February 2, 3, 11, 15, 16, and 21 are the anomaly days. Considering the abundance of renewable energy potential in Turkey, green hydrogen derived from renewable sources holds great promise as a fuel. This paper presents a model for obtaining green hydrogen from medium-temperature geothermal sources. In this model, the Zilan location in the Van province of Turkey was identified as a suitable site for electricity and hydrogen production from low or medium-temperature geothermal sources due to its significant geothermal and water resource potential. In this regard, the installed capacity of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) geothermal power plant is determined by using Monte Carlo Simulation based on the characteristics of the geothermal well at this location, and subsequently, the hydrogen production performance has been evaluated by analyzing the water of Lake Van. According to the analysis results, Lake Van was found to be efficient for hydrogen production. Hydrogen production from Lake Van water was subsequently simulated using the electrolysis method with this ORC geothermal power plant. According to the findings of this model, the hourly hydrogen production potential at this location using a 1.4 MW ORC plant, based on 2022 data, was estimated to be 18.6 kg, which is projected to increase to 28 kg based on 2050 estimated data. In addition, the techno-economic analysis of this compact green hydrogen production process was conducted in the study. The production cost of 1 kg of hydrogen was calculated to be €4.91 in 2022, while it is expected to be €1.21 in 2050. Since 2007, the number of HIV diagnoses in Turkey has increased more than 600% and the AIDS-related deaths have more than doubled. Despite trans community being severely impacted by the growing epidemic, there exists a conspicuous absence of epidemiological data regarding the HIV burden of trans people. This paper examines the medical experiences of HIV-positive trans women who engage in sex work and the harmful violence they encounter at the hands of health providers. The paper emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to address the intersecting issues of HIV risk, structural violence, and discrimination faced by HIV-positive trans sex workers, one of the most marginalized communities worldwide. To interpret better how transphobia and HIVphobia become deeply entangled in Turkish medical settings, the paper draws from the concepts of iatrogenesis , necropolitics, and immunity. By bringing together these conceptual tools with long-term ethnographic data and in-depth interviews, this paper demonstrates that trans women are treated by healthcare providers as though they are always-already infectious. • The massification project led to the formation of a university-industrial complex. • Massification is achieved through a state-led spatial fix in newly emerging urban centers. • The developmentalist project created a diversely skilled surplus population. • Youth is entrapped within production sites, debt relationships, and local economies. Turkish higher education has been massified in a fast-paced reform wave through widespread proliferation of public universities in less developed cities, accompanied with the state-led student loan expansion since the early 2000 s. From a geographical-historical materialist lens, this paper elucidates the duplicitous character of the massification project, arguing that rather than democratizing the access to higher education, this transformation prioritized the benefits of local capital accumulation in the newly emerging urban centers to the detriment of the educated youth, entrapping the latter in unemployment, underemployment, and indebtedness, rendering them a diversely skilled relative surplus population. Based on two-year long qualitative research, the paper identifies three intertwined youth enclosures that have functioned as constitutive mechanisms of a spatial fix, forming what this paper conceptualizes as the university-industrial complex : physical enclosure of the university youth in emerging production sites as disposable cheap labour force, temporal enclosure of the graduates in long-term debt relations with the state, and finally social enclosure of the youth for their reproduction in predatory local economies of non-metropolitan cities. Rural heritage settlements have encountered many challenges and risks due to the rapid evolution of the cultural tourism economy, such as changing demographics, overcrowding, evolving consumer demands, and biodiversity loss. Conservation of environmental and sociocultural assets of these rural settlements and strengthening community resilience have been considered indispensable in global sustainable development. In this regard, a growing body of research has investigated the implications to wider issues of environmental sustainability through lessons learned from these rural, vernacular settlements. However, discussions on transformation driven by tourism and socio-cultural resilience in rural contexts have attracted limited attention. Contributing to this gap in the literature, based on a longitudinal survey study (spanning from 2000 to 2022) conducted in Behramkale (rural, vernacular village in Türkiye), this paper investigates rural community resilience strategies adopted by residents to cope with transformation led by cultural tourism and strict heritage conservation restrictions. The study results showed that the new development area (new settlement) of the village served as an infrastructure of the old settlement, by means of a home for the local residents, and an economic asset for the village. As a domestic and non-intermittent resource, geothermal energy offers countries a clean and sustainable energy option while setting their energy mix strategies. Turkiye, endowed with rich energy fields, stands out as one of the fastest-growing countries in geothermal energy. The dramatic installed power capacity increase and significant expansion in the geothermal energy market, particularly after 2010 following the initiation of the incentive scheme, are pretty remarkable. Nonetheless, it is also evident that geothermal energy investments in the country have shown a decreasing trend in recent years. At this point, this paper aims to reveal the opportunities and challenges in the development of geothermal energy as the first comprehensive qualitative analysis for Turkiye. Furthermore, it evaluates the diffusion of geothermal energy in Turkiye based on the Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) framework to gain insight into the Turkish geothermal sector. According to the interviewees, financial and political barriers such as high investor costs, insufficient incentives for power generation, and the lack of incentives for direct utilization, along with lengthy and exhausting permitting processes, still hinder the prevalence of geothermal energy utilization in the country. One of the most important benefits of renewable energy sources is that they can create hybrid energy systems with other energy sources. Hybrid energy systems are structures in that more than one energy generation unit works together to feed the electrical load. In this paper, a hybrid system will be designed by using Homer PRO, to supply the energy consumed in the residential areas of Karaburun and Urla districts of Izmir province in Turkey with hybrid renewable energy systems. Systems of different sizes are designed for 50%, 75%, and 100% penetration rates, and sales to the grid are constrained to 0%, 25%, 50%, and no constraint on sales. Sensitivity analyses have been performed for 10% and 20% more power required by the load. Techno-economic analyses were done for the systems and the optimal system has been identified. The power flow of the optimal system is inspected by defining the network in Python and Fire Hawk Optimizer (FHO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used for optimal sizing of the system. The optimal system has a Net Present Cost (NPC) of $52.3 M, 34 wind turbines, and 954 kW PV with conditions of 100% penetration and no restrictions on sales to the grid. FHO proposed 26 wind turbines and 780 kW PVs for Urla and 8 wind turbines, and 174 kW PVs for Karaburun. GWO proposed 25 wind turbines and 747 kW PVs for Urla, 9 wind turbines, and 165 PVs for Karaburun. PSO offered 24 wind turbines and 708 kW PVs for Urla, 10 wind turbines, and 246 kW PVs for Karaburun. When there is no sale to and 25% sales to the grid, it is seen that the optimal scenario is the system with a 50% penetration rate. In fully sale-constrained systems, NPCs are higher than the base system and they can never pay for themselves compared to the base system. It is concluded that smaller-sized systems are more suitable for systems with high constraints. The proposed FHO algorithm and GWO algorithm react to increasing penetration ratios by enlarging the system size in the regions with high load demand. PSO sizes the system like predictions by load demand. FHO reacts quicker to increasing penetrations than PSO and GWO. The use of Digital Storytelling Workshops and the digital stories as an end product has been an important asset for health communication, both for raising awareness about particular health issues and the interpersonal aspects in health service presentation. Relying on the qualitative data collected through a reception survey completed by 65 undergraduate dentistry students, in the context of the health communication course in Hacettepe University, a public university in Turkey, this paper examines the reception of digital stories that were created by patients with cleft-lip and palate and craniomaxillofacial deformities, their parents and doctors in a digital storytelling workshop. This qualitative study has shown that the use of patients', their parents' and their doctors' digital stories cleft-lip and palate and craniomaxillofacial deformities has helped the undergraduate dentistry students to develop an insight about their professional roles as well as connecting their theoretical knowledge of a health condition with the lived experiences by patients, patients' parents and their doctors. This paper presents the thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of the Erzincan Waste Tire Recycling and Power Plant (EWTRPP) in Turkey and its waste heat-based district heating (DH) system. A thermoeconomical method, namely the specific exergy costing (SPECO), is applied to allocate cost flows through subcomponents of an actual existing plant. Besides, the obtained thermoeconomic results are improved by using an optimization method, namely non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), considering the temperature of the exhaust gas discharged to the atmosphere (T 25), the thermal conductivity value of the insulation material (ki) and pipe roughness value (s). The energy and exergy efficiencies of the existing plant are found to be 27.37% and 35.57%, respectively, considering the data of the actual plant. Moreover, the energy and exergy efficiencies of the waste heat-based DH system are found to be 43.08% and 55.99%, respectively. The total cost rate of the overall system is deduced 13.98 $/hby means of SPECO method. According to the results of the NSGA-II optimization method, the exergy efficiency and total cost rate of the overall system are evaluated as 6.93% and −2.51 $/h, respectively. Geochemical and isotopic markers of the most primitive basaltic melts allow us to understand the temporal evolution of the lithospheric mantle and geodynamic processes. This paper presents the geochemical, Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic data, K Ar dating and the petrological evolution of the petrogenesis of the late Miocene-early Pliocene basaltic volcanism observed in the Baltacık-Günkoru region in the northeastern of Lake Van in Eastern Anatolia Collision Zone (EACZ). These data allow us to understand the origin of collision-related magmatism and the geodynamic processes in the late Miocene-early Pliocene in the EACZ. Geochronological age data (K Ar) indicate that basaltic volcanism erupted between ∼7.63 and 5.24 Ma. Major-incompatible trace element contents, Sr Nd isotopic compositions of the studied samples and EC-AFC (energy-constrained recharge, assimilation, and fractional crystallization), and MELTS model calculations point out that basaltic volcanism has undergone fractional crystallization but unaffected crustal contamination. Petrological models created using 87Sr/86Sr, ℇNd and ℇHf isotopic data, together with calculated primary melt compositions of basaltic lavas, indicate that the DMM-type (Depleted Morb Mantle) mantle source is metasomatized by melts rather than fluids derived from subducted oceanic lithosphere. Combined trace element and isotopic modelling results indicate that the calculated primary melts were formed by 2.5–5% melting of a metasomatised spinel-garnet lherzolitic mantle source, including amphibole and 1% residual rutile. This mantle source has been metasomatised by a 1–3% contribution of subducted slab component, with a sediment melt/AOC (altered oceanic crust) melt ratio of about 90:10. Thermobarometric calculations based on calculated primary melts compositions indicate that the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) is a depth of 67 ± 4 km for 7.53–5.24 Ma. Literature data and the findings obtained from this study indicate that the late Miocene to early Pliocene basaltic volcanism in the south of the EACZ) is progressed by the delamination of the mantle lithosphere. This delamination occurred in a fragmented/patched or dripping manner rather than whole-scale delamination in the 3–4 million years between ∼9 Ma and 5–6 Ma. The waste management subject is a very important issue today and in the future. Therefore, lots of scholars are endeavoring to investigate the valorization of wastes from different sources, such as paper, metal, glass, and vegetables. In this study, the pistachio soft and hard shells, as an industrial waste material, were used as natural dye sources. For this purpose, waste were collected from Gaziantep province in the south of Türkiye. Then, the soft and hard pistachio shells that had been dried in the shadow were investigated in terms of FTIR analysis and then used as a dyestuff source in the dyeing of cotton fabrics with the help of bio-mordants and metal mordants. Additionally, the antioxidant capacity of the soft and hard shell of pistachio was assessed through the DPPH and FRAP assay methods, and the antibacterial activities were tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli for selected dyed samples. A spectrophotometer was used to determine the CIE L*a*b* color values and (K/S) of cotton fabrics that had been dyed. The results exhibited that the tested wastes could be useful for the coloration of the cotton fabrics, and depending on the used natural dye source, mordanting agent, and mordanting method, the colors were found to have changed, but in general, light brown-ecru-brown colors were observed in the dyed samples. Meanwhile, the fastness of the samples was examined, and the sources were found to exhibit limited light fastness values but good or perfect washing, rubbing, and perspiration fastness. In conclusion, the evaluated conditions were found to be useful for the coloration of cotton, and even more importantly, the pistachio soft and hard shells were observed to reveal great potential for use in textile dye houses as a natural dye source. This paper explores the applicability of one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear (NL) and equivalent-linear (EL) site response analyses (SRA) for characterizing site effects at selected strong ground motion stations impacted by the February 6, 2023 Türkiye earthquakes. The 1D NL simulations generally underestimate site response at softer sites and for long periods likely due to basin effects and the uncertainties associated with site properties and the 1D approximation. The inclusion of the high-frequency spectral decay parameter (κ 0) in 1D simulations decreases the prediction bias of nonlinear SRA, especially at soft sites for short periods. Moreover, the theoretical transfer functions (TTFs) are demonstrated to capture the fundamental site period through in horizontal-to-spectral vertical ratio (HVSR) using ground motion data before and after the February 6, 2023 main event. • The performance of 1D site response approach in capturing site effects at stations affected by 2023 Türkiye events was tested. • 1D assumption underestimates the observed PSA for periods greater than site period probably due to basin effects at Hatay. • The use of κ 0 to adjust D min values of soils was found to slightly reduce the bias in 1D predictions for short periods. • ETFs and TTFs show consistency in the location of peak amplifications while highlighting discrepancies in terms of amplitude. On February 6, 2023, two heavy earthquakes with moment magnitudes (M W) of 7.7 and 7.6 hit the Kahramanmaraş region in southeast Türkiye. Aftershocks of moment magnitude of 6 occurred consequently. These earthquakes affected more than 14 million people, and caused severe damage to civil infrastructure including buildings, government offices, religious buildings, dams, bridges, airports, and roads. After the earthquakes, a group of researchers visited the Hatay province to assess the response of buildings. Hatay was one of the most heavily affected cities in the region. The researchers gathered data on damaged reinforced concrete buildings, steel structures, as well as masonry buildings. This paper focuses on discussing the findings and analyzing the gathered data from reinforced concrete buildings and steel structures. A wide variety of issues that resulted in heavy damage or, in some cases, complete collapse of the buildings are discussed. These problems include construction mistakes such as insufficient shear reinforcements, neglected corrosion, utilizing low-quality concrete, insufficient development length in flexural reinforcements, and strong beam- weak column failure. In addition, various design errors including excessive torsional response of buildings, rigidity difference in two orthogonal directions of east–west and north–south of the building plan, pounding effect, short column failure, and development of weak and soft stories are described using gathered pictorial data. Finally, recommendations were made, and conclusions were drawn based on previous experimental and numerical studies of the seismic behavior of buildings as well as Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC- 2018) requirements. The potential for in-situ CO 2 sequestration was analyzed experimentally for one basaltic hyaloclastite sample from the Nesjavellir geothermal reservoir in Iceland and three metasedimentary rock samples from the Kızıldere geothermal field in Turkey. Based on batch reaction experiments, this paper demonstrates the interaction between a CO 2 gas-charged fluid and rock samples from these reservoirs. The experiments were conducted at 260 °C and 0.8 MPa, and 105 °C and 17 MPa for the basaltic and metasedimentary rocks, respectively. The experimental results indicate that CO 2 sequestration within the glassy basaltic rocks is hampered by zeolite, chlorite, and anhydrite, which compete with carbonate minerals to uptake divalent cations at the P-T conditions applied. In contrast, the carbonation process for the metasedimentary rocks is inhibited by their mineralogical composition. Generally, these rocks are less reactive and provide an insufficient supply of divalent cations. The batch reactor experiments were numerically simulated with the PHREEQC geochemical modeling program. The simulations indicate that CO 2 sequestration is feasible at the tested P-T conditions, provided that silicate and SO 4 mineralization is suppressed for the basaltic rocks and that there is an effective source of divalent cations for the metasedimentary rocks. Ranking Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (IFS) using distance-based methods involves calculating the distance between an IFS and a reference point which represents either maximum (positive ideal solution) or minimum (negative ideal solution) value. These methods assume that similarity of an IFSs to the reference point increases as its distance from it decreases. While it is a common practice to use nonlinear distance functions for ranking IFSs, this paper proves that no nonlinear IF distance function can be robust. In this study, the shortcomings of the conventional procedure are demonstrated by providing a mathematical proof and an alternative ranking method based on the hypervolume metric is proposed. In addition, the suggested ranking approach is extended as a new multi-criteria decision making method called Hypervolume-based Evaluation and Ranking Technique (HEART). HEART is applied for multi-criteria assessment of Turkey's energy alternatives. This paper examines how the housing problem of the Roma people, living already under severe socio-spatial circumstances, has been exacerbated by counterurbanisation over recent decades in the resort town of Urla, İzmir. Based on empirical socio-spatial research adopting methodological pluralism integrating qualitative and quantitative research techniques, the study uses in-depth interviews and secondary data (e.g., real-estate web data, official statistics, and local media) as well as spatial analysis of satellite images. We limited our study to the proximity of the town center of Urla, considering the Roma community's 'right to the city', ensuring their right not to be exiled to the spaces of discrimination, and not to be exempted from their right to appear and co-exist in the town center. As Urla became a prominent and attractive destination of counterurbanisation in Turkey, its growth was intensified by high-end housing production. Coming to 2000s, its urban-rural texture remained, at least physically, 'rural', but it had undergone significant transformation. And while this recent higher-end development accompanied by counterurbanisation is sanctioned by local authorities, the public and property owners, it leaves no room for the Roma people to find decent housing. As one of the Cordilleran-type metamorphic core complexes in the western Anatolian extensional province and the broader Aegean region, the Çataldağ metamorphic core complex is composed of a granite-gneiss-migmatite complex and a synkinematic pluton, bounded by a detachment fault zone. The plutonic rocks within the footwall of the Çataldağ metamorphic core complex consist of Eo-Oligocene anatectic S-type leucogranites associated with gneiss-migmatite complex forming the core rocks and an I-type synkinematic pluton that emplaced into the core rocks in the Early Miocene. This paper presents the petrography, mineral chemistry, major-trace element geochemistry, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions of the Çataldağ I-type synkinematic pluton. It discusses the magma source evolution from the Eo-Oligocene to the Early Miocene and their relations to the Çataldağ metamorphic core complex formation by comparing two contrasting granitic associations from a petrological perspective. The Çataldağ I-type synkinematic pluton primarily comprises porphyritic granodiorite, granite, and peripheral rocks including evolved granite and pegmatite dikes. Thermobarometry calculations estimate crystallisation conditions of approximately 795 °C at 1–2 kbar (averaging 1.5 kbar), corresponding to a shallow crustal magma chamber (⁓5 km deep). The pluton is metaluminous to slightly peraluminous and of a high-K calc-alkaline character. The 87Sr/86Sr (i) and εNd values of the studied samples range from 0.70684 to 0.70772 and from −6.1 to −2.3, respectively. Pb isotopic compositions are 18.74–19.29 for 206Pb/204Pb, 15.69–15.78 for 207Pb/204Pb, and 38.89–39.39 for 208Pb/204Pb. Geochemical modelling shows that a large amount of metasomatised lithospheric mantle-derived melt component (up to 70%) and a minor crustal component (<50%) contributed to the source region of the magma. The combination of isotopic data and thermodynamic modelling suggests that the compositional variations within the pluton were primarily the result of open system processes, predominantly the assimilation of crustal rocks with a dominance of fractional crystallisation. The Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic signatures and trace element characteristics of I-type pluton, as well as their comparisons with those of S-type leucogranites within the Çataldağ core complex, indicate heterogeneous magma sources, evolving from crust-dominated to mantle-dominated magma from Eo-Oligocene to the early Miocene, reflecting mantle upwelling beneath NW Anatolia. We infer that the long-lived, mantle-driven Eocene plutonic activity that preceded the development of core complexes may have led to thermal weakening, melting, and crustal flow in the lower-middle crust beneath NW Anatolia, facilitating the formation of the granite-gneiss-migmatite complex during the incipient phase of extension in the Eo-Oligocene. Coinciding with the rapid exhumation of the S-type granite and migmatite complex, the formation and emplacement of I-type synkinematic pluton along the detachment fault zone of the Çataldağ core complex were developed as a result of asthenospheric upwelling driven by lithospheric removal processes. This inferred lithospheric removal was triggered by Hellenic slab rollback affecting the entire western Anatolia since the Oligocene. The transition from S- to I-type granites observed in the Çataldağ core complex and other Aegean massifs may indeed be a manifestation of the intensity or accumulation of this crustal extension. Western Anatolia (WA) hosts numerous I-and S-type plutons with variable compositions. This paper presents new comprehensive geology, petrography, bulk-rock and mineral chemistry, Sr Nd isotope, zircon U Pb, biotite and hornblende Ar/Ar and first apatite U Th / He age data for seven plutons (Baklan, Evciler, Eybek, Ilıca-Şamlı, Kozak, Uludağ, Yenice) in WA. Western Anatolia granitoid plutons (WAGPs) are mainly granodiorite, with minor monzonite, diorite, quartz monzonite and granite. The dominant minerals are K-feldspar (usually orthoclase and rarely microcline), plagioclase (albite, oligoclase), amphibole (hornblende), biotite, quartz, and accessory minerals are titanite, zircon, apatite, and opaques. The crystallization temperatures are relatively uniform (640-740 °C) but pressures range from those typical of the upper crust to those typical of the mid crust. The plutons are characterized by moderate to high SiO 2 (58.1–73.7 wt%), K 2 O (2.1–6.9 wt%), and relatively low P 2 O 5 (0.03–0.60 wt%) and most are I-type and metaluminous, except for the Uludağ pluton that is S-type. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs e.g. U, Th, Rb, and K), light rare earth elements (LREEs) and Pb, and depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), high field strength elements (HFSE, e.g. Nb, Ti) and Sr, Ba and P relative to other LILEs. The plutons display small Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*: 0.17–1.15) due to probaly suppression of feldspar fractionation/or partial melting of lower crust. They have relatively high initial 87Sr/86Sr = 0.705775–0.708357 and low initial 143Nd/144Nd = 0.512290–0.512581. The LA-ICP-MS 206Pb 238U age analyses of zircon in addition to 40Ar/39Ar dating of hornblendes and biotites suggest that the plutons were emplaced between 29.4 Ma and 19.8 Ma and cooled with a relatively high rate (∼363 °C/Ma). These ages correlate with the collision between the Sakarya Zone and Anatolide–Tauride Platform in Rupelian to Burdigalian time. The (U Th)/He apatite ages range from 19.8 Ma to 7.6 Ma, for the WA granitoid plutons and indicates that the crustal terrains hosting the seven plutons had complex exhumation histories within their arc environment. Consequently, these ages constrain the crystallization, cooling and exumation times of the Oligocene to Miocene plutons in a post-collisional setting on the northern margin of Gondwana. Iznik lake is the biggest lake in the Marmara region, which is the most industrialized and populated area of Türkiye. The lake is one of Türkiye's most important water supply areas and is located nearby the Iznik district of Bursa, with a population of about 45,000. It is being used for irrigation and fishery production, but not for drinking water. In this paper, the distribution, pollution source, and risk assessment of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) in the surface sediments of Iznik lake and streams (both flowing to and flowing from the lake) were investigated. Six surface sediments collected from the lake and four surface sediments collected from the streams were analyzed in high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR/GC–MS) system in accordance with EPA 1613 and EPA 1668 methods. The concentration ranges of the ∑PCDD/Fs is 21.4 pg/g d.w. (inside the lake (IZ-6)) – 54.5 pg/g d.w. (Gülayağı stream (IZ-8)) and ∑DL-PCBs is 13.5 pg/g d.w. (inside the lake (IZ-3)) – 46.3 pg/g d.w. (Olukdere (IZ-7)) respectively, with 2.68 pg TEQ/g d.w. on average. The results showed that the high chlorinated (Hepta – Octa CDD/Fs) dioxins/furans and pentachlorinated PCBs (PCB 118 and 105) are dominant in the sediments. A detailed assessment of PCDD/F congener profiles observed in the lake sediments speculated that the wastewater discharges to the lake could be the main pollution source, while other sources such as open burning activities, runoff of pesticide residues from agricultural areas and atmospheric deposition may have some contribution also. The health risk assessment performed for polluted sediment demonstrated that, in the worst case, dioxin-like (PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs) concentration was a total intake of 0.37 pg TEQ/kg body weight/day, no exceeds the tolerable daily intake amount, where fish consumption accounts for nearly all of the total intake.
