A current topic that has surfaced among Public Transport Companies (PTCs) is the selection of alternative fuels for their bus fleets. Both European and Italian regulations are pushing toward abandoning diesel fuel and the consolidation of alternative traction power sources, such as battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell electric vehicles, and hydrogen-electric vehicles. The literature has provided some approaches toward assessing this selection such as multicriteria-decision-methods in some countries in the world. However, not enough specific attention has been paid to cost criteria, experts involved, and the type of service required. This paper intends to address these gaps by applying an integrated method, which includes: (i) the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to define the weights of criteria; (ii) the ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalitè I (ELECTRE I) to find a good compromise solution among the fuel alternatives and (iii) a simple Weighted Sum Model (WSM) to refine ranking. This integrated method was applied in Italy involving a panel of experts from whom the data was collected. Different fuel alternatives for both urban and interurban services and with and without funding are discussed. On-orbit servicing and on-orbit assembly represent very appealing mission concepts that could facilitate the exploitation of the space environment. Autonomy is a critical requirement for systems aimed at the execution of these operations. The development of enabling technologies for this type of missions is a focal research topic for the global space community. The AUTOMA project (University of Padua, Italy) aims at the development of technologies to enable the on-orbit assembly of a standardized modular unit by means of a robotic arm. The goal is the development of a capture interface, composed of a gripper mechanism and a suite of close-range navigation sensors (a navcam, four time-of-flight sensors, two custom matrix sensors based on a set of phototransistors), and the mock-up of a modular assembly unit. The paper prevalently focuses on the conspicuous series of tests that has been performed at subsystem level for the characterization of the two custom matrix sensors, both in terms of their resolution and range of application. In particular, the test campaign has proven how the in-plane matrix sensor provides information about lateral misalignment and relative distance with a resolution of a few millimetres while the roll matrix sensor provides information about the angular roll misalignment with a resolution dependent on the distance between the two bodies. Projectile implements are one of the most frequent transformed lithic blanks within the Upper Paleolithic assemblages. Since the first taxonomic studies, their morphological variability has been used as primary fossil director to define specific regional trends and diachronic phases. However, an exhaustive analysis of manufacturing methods and techniques applied to shape this gear category is extremely rare. In fact, during the Late Epigravettian, except for a certain typological variability, the lack of detailed studies resulted in an apparent homogeneity in armatures production. In this paper, a technological and traceological approach applied to reconstruct the whole chaîne opératoire of armatures manufacture in three Northern Italian sites dated between 17,000 and 12,000 cal BP demonstrates important variations in how projectile implements are fashioned, concerning shape, production methods and retouch techniques. Moreover, a large-scale comparison suggests how renewals in projectile implements production in North-Eastern Italy may result from long-distance connections between human groups over the western Late Epigravettian territory. In this paper, we study the structural change in both central-northern and southern Italy, focusing on its implications for productivity dynamics and its micro-economic determinants. We document three main results. First, between 2001 and 2018, the deindustrialization process involved both areas; however, in the southern regions it mostly started after the financial crisis. In the South, the employment shares in low knowledge-intensive services increased more than in the central-northern area, whereas those in high knowledge-intensive services increased less markedly. Second, structural change slowed down productivity growth in the central and northern regions, but had no role in the productivity fall in the South. Finally, in central and northern Italy, employment growth was driven by the net creation of jobs among incumbents and larger firms. In contrast, employment dynamics in the southern regions largely reflected the process of firms entering and exiting the market, in particular in less knowledge-intensive service sectors, and in young and smaller enterprises. Precision Agriculture (PA) has revolutionized crop management by leveraging information technology, satellite positioning data, and remote sensing. One crucial component in PA applications is the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which offers valuable insights into crop vigor and health. However, discontinuity of optical satellite acquisitions related to cloud cover and the huge load of the required processing time pose challenges to real-time applications. NDVI prediction emerges as an innovative solution to address these limitations. It allows for proactive decision-making by providing accurate estimates, enabling farmers and land managers to plan essential agronomic activities such as irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, based on anticipated future conditions. This study introduces an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model incorporating NDVI, Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), temperatures, and precipitation as predictive variables. The model employs a novel time series slicing algorithm, Boosting Adaptive Time Series Slicer (BATS), to enhance the input training dataset's variability, presenting the model with a broader range of examples. A 2-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting model was developed to predict future NDVI values over short and medium-term horizons. The study area used to train, test and validate the ANN corresponds to a diverse landscape of cultivated corn fields located in Piemonte (NW-Italy). Results showed that NDVI future estimates were accurate; considering three time horizons for predictions (5, 10, and 15 days) RMSE values resulted to be 0.028, 0.038 and 0.050, respectively. Additionally, ablation tests proved that the most important variable for enhancing the model's accuracy is the NDWI, and the most useful timesteps are the four most recent ones. To preliminary investigate the capability of the ANN to operate over a wider and different area it was applied over the entire Europe, using the LUCAS dataset as reference map to locate corn fields. Results show RMSE of 0.062, 0.083 and 0.105 for the 5, 10 and 15 days forecasting horizons, respectively. The methodology proposed in this paper can be a possible alternative to more ordinary approaches for NDVI forecasting that nowadays appears to be a fundamental step for a proactive precision agriculture where crop management can be significantly improved. The development of new technological innovations for eco-friendly vehicles combined with the usage of renewable energy sources is essential for mitigating the environmental impact of freight transport. In this context, this paper investigates the opportunities for implementing the eHighway system, a novel recent technology designed to supply new hybrid trucks. This technology uses overhead catenary heavy-duty vehicles that are supplied with electric energy from overhead power lines through a pantograph that is positioned at the top of the truck. A novel bi-level multi-objective network electrification design (BM-NED) model is proposed to assess the environmental benefits and opportunities of adopting eHighways, considering the limited budgetary resources for road infrastructure electrification. Still, the implementation of eHighways requires collaboration between public and private stakeholder interests. The upper level considers multiple objectives aiming at minimizing the total travel cost, infrastructure, and environmental costs and maximizing the average traffic density of OC hybrid trucks on electrified arcs, whereas the lower level is the traffic assignment model. The Elitist multi-objective Genetic Algorithms are used as a solution approach for the multi-objective optimization and the Pareto front of the non-dominated solutions have been generated. Results of the model, tested on a part of a motorway network in the Veneto region in Italy, show that the implementation of the eHighway system can lead to an average emission reduction of about 66%, considering all Pareto-optimal solutions. Freedom of Information (FOI) is considered a crown jewel of reforms fostering public administration transparency and accountability. However, FOI's symbolic power alone cannot overcome the organizational barriers and obstacles to its effective implementation. This paper presents the results of a field experiment performed in Italy, a late FOI adopter, where an FOI request was sent to the 307 municipalities with more than 30k inhabitants. The experimental design exploits marginal wording variation in the requests to test whether municipalities discriminate between ordinary citizens and high-profile requesters. The experimental evidence suggests that most Italian municipalities reply to FOI requests. The results show two opposite types of discretionary bias: Northern municipalities tend to favor high-profile requesters, whereas Southern municipalities tend to respond to them with a higher degree of attrition. This paper presents a novel energy management strategy (EMS) to control a wind-hydrogen microgrid which includes a wind turbine paired with a hydrogen-based energy storage system (HESS), i.e., hydrogen production, storage and re-electrification facilities, and a local load. This complies with the mini-grid use case as per the IEA-HIA Task 24 Final Report, where three different use cases and configurations of wind farms paired with HESS are proposed in order to promote the integration of wind energy into the grid. Hydrogen production surpluses by wind generation are stored and used to provide a demand-side management solution for energy supply to the local and contractual loads, both in the grid-islanded and connected modes, with corresponding different control objectives. The EMS is based on a hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) in which long-term and short-term operations are addressed. The long-term operations are managed by a high-level MPC, in which power production by wind generation and load demand forecasts are considered in combination with day-ahead market participation. Accordingly, the hydrogen production and re-electrification are scheduled so as to jointly track the load demand, maximize the revenue through electricity market participation and minimize the HESS operating costs. Instead, the management of the short-term operations is entrusted to a low-level MPC, which compensates for any deviations of the actual conditions from the forecasts and refines the power production so as to address the real-time market participation and the short time-scale equipment dynamics and constraints. Both levels also take into account operation requirements and devices' operating ranges through appropriate constraints. The mathematical modeling relies on the mixed-logic dynamic (MLD) framework so that the various logic states and corresponding continuous dynamics of the HESS are considered. This results in a mixed-integer linear program which is solved numerically. In the agri-food supply chain, the perishable nature of the commodities opens a series of challenges at all decision levels: strategical, tactical and operational. This paper presents an age-based model for the inventory-routing problem of perishable commodities with stochastic demands. To deal with this source of uncertainty, the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) has been adopted as a risk measure, and then the model has been applied to the agri-food supply chain under investigation. The model is the core of a dynamic approach for the optimal distribution and inventory planning over a short-medium horizon. To address a problem as realistic as possible, we assume that the demand for products of each age is unknown and we model this uncertainty by means of random variables with a probability distribution that can be estimated from historical data. Computational experiments on test cases based on a real-life agri-food company located in Italy show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for evaluating different risk attitudes. The swift urbanization and ensuing challenges in global cities require a transition towards "intelligent" urban management. This change is motivated by the necessity to enrich the quality of life, tackling crucial issues such as transportation. How can municipal authorities effectively utilize smart city principles and technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability in urban living? This query plays a vital role in steering urban policies and city governance towards a more sustainable and intelligent future. The paper suggests a survey-based research perspective unprecedented on "disruptive" transportation, offering a longitudinal examination (2010–2023) of cross-national comparison (ITA-UK) using a relatively large sample (No. 450 total) and divided into No.150 –UK 2023, No.150 –ITA 2023, and No. 150 Italy 2010 respectively. The sample base considers the two Capitals (London and Rome) for diversity, population size, and ongoing projects related to "smart" urban developed. Intending to offer a valuable analytical tool for policymakers, scholars, managers, and professionals, the paper primarily explores the evolutionary progression of sustainability concepts inherent in the smart city paradigm and their fusion with transportation; after the cross-national comparison is essential for highlighting mindset disparities that influence future planning endeavors for future urban transportation sector. This paper examines the problem of evictions in Italy, focusing on their quantitative dimension on a national and regional level, from the 1980s to the present. In line with many western European countries, particularly those in southern Europe, Italy has historically emphasised homeownership as the central pillar of its housing policy, relegating tenants' housing problems to the background. In an attempt to shed light on tenants' housing hardship, the analysis addresses evictions as one of their most pressing problems, according to the following research questions: Why is the phenomenon of evictions under-investigated in Italy? What is the current scenario of evictions in Italy and what public policies are in place to tackle them? The paper points out the high rate of evictions in Italy compared to other European countries, the increase in evictions for arrears and the inadequate use of public resources allocated to answer the problem. The proposed analysis advocate for reframing evictions as a pressing social issue with far-reaching political implications. This paper presents the first detailed analysis of cloud-to-ground (CG) and intra-cloud (IC) strokes characteristics from the Lightning Detection Network (LINET) over Italy and the Central Mediterranean area, a lightning active area in south Europe. We study the strokes over a 13-year period from 2010 to 2022, aiming to understand how it varies with different temporal scales (hourly, monthly, seasonally, and yearly), surface types (sea and land), and ground levels (0–100 m ; 100–200 m ; 200–400 m ; 400–800 m ; 800–1200 m ; 1200–2000 m and above 2000 m). We found that the stroke's maximum activity was observed in August; specifically, July has the maximum activity over the land with a maximum diurnal peak in the afternoon, while in September, the convection shifts over the sea with a secondary daily maximum in the morning. The largest current intensities are observed in January, over sea and during nighttime. Moreover we found that stroke current intensities, polarity and IC height emissions are influenced by ground altitude level. Our paper provides new insights into the spatio-temporal patterns and characteristics of lightning over Italy and the Central Mediterranean area, which can be useful for improving weather forecasting, climate modeling, risk assessment, and damage mitigation strategies in this area. • Orography has strong impact on lightning density, polarity, intensity and discharge height. • Vigorous convection develops over the land in summer and over the sea in autumn. • Overall stroke density reaches its peak in August. • Atmospheric instability decreases the breakdown threshold increasing weaker strokes. This paper examines the underexplored impact of the procedures in public contracts on market allocation efficiency that are at risk of corruption. We integrated the GMM-SYS estimator with analyses of a balanced panel database of all the provinces in Italy between the period 2013–2021. The use of a high level of spatial granularity in an under-researched context revealed two distinct scenarios. In competitive markets, a more entrepreneurial and less widespread form of corruption emerged which may enhance market efficiency (bottom-up pattern). Conversely, in a context with limited market competition and low institutional quality, corruption indicators may be less useful due to potential pre-bribery behavior (top-down pattern). Our study underscores the capacity of corrupt suppliers to exploit market opportunities and secure selection. We found that corruption risk practices within public contracts have the potential to improve market efficiency, thus rendering them appealing to corrupt suppliers due to their capacity to deliver economic advantages. This also applies to provinces with high-quality governance. Additionally, the paper highlights the limitations of indicators in alternative contexts. An innovative timber retrofit was investigated at the EUCENTRE and at the University of Pavia, Italy, as part of a comprehensive research campaign on the seismic vulnerability of existing unreinforced masonry buildings subjected to induced seismicity in The Netherlands. The retrofit system consists of timber frames, connected to the masonry piers and to the floor diaphragms, and oriented-strand board sheathing nailed to the frames and to flexible timber diaphragms. Starting from the main critical aspects observed in experimental tests, the proposed solution was conceived to enhance the in-plane and out-of-plane capacities of masonry piers, improve the overall wall-to-diaphragm connections, increase the floor diaphragm stiffness and strength, and allow possible integration with energy efficiency upgrades. This paper, the first of a series of two, focuses on the conceptual bases of the seismic retrofit system and on the analytical equations that can be used for the design of its components. Moreover, a step-by-step design procedure is presented to guide the reader through the application of these equations. • Hydrological digital twins (HDT) are essential tools to understand the hydrological cycle especially in a changing climate. • We present, test, and validate an open-source framework to implement HDT in the large anthropized alpine Adige catchment. • The HDT is calibrated/validated on a variety of hydrological processes and data sources providing satisfactory performances. Understanding and simulating the hydrological cycle, especially in a context of climate change, is crucial for quantitative water risk assessment and basin management. The hydrological cycle is complex as it is a combination of non-linear natural processes and anthropogenic influences that alter landforms and water flows. Human-induced changes of relevance, including changes in land uses, construction of dams and artificial reservoirs, and diversion of the river course, lead to changes in water flows throughout the basin. These should be explicitly accounted for a realistic representation of the anthropogenically altered hydrological cycle. Such a realistic representation of the hydrological cycle is a necessary input for the water risk assessment in a particular region. In this paper, we present a hydrological digital twin (HDT) model of a large anthropized alpine basin: the Adige basin located in the northeast of Italy. Most catchments model often overlook land-uses changes over time and forget to model reservoir operation and their influence over time on water flow. Yet, for example, the Adige basin has>30 reservoirs affecting the water flow. We therefore use the GEOframe modeling framework to demonstrate the ability to create a hydrological twin model accounting for these anthropogenic changes. Specifically, we model each component of the water cycle over 39 years (1980–2018) at daily timescale through calibration of the Adige HDT with a multi-site approach using discharge data of 33 stations, based on a high-resolution (1 km) temperature and precipitation dataset and a calculated crop potential evapotranspiration (PETc) dataset, which accounts for human-induced change of the land cover over time. The modeling system also includes the simulation of artificial reservoirs and dams by the dynamically zoned target release (DZTR) reservoir model. The Adige HDT is assessed/validated/compared through a variety of hydrological processes (i.e., river and reservoir discharges, PETc and actual evapotranspiration, snow, and soil moisture) and data sources (i.e., observations and remote sensing data). Overall, the HDT reproduces well the measured discharge in space and time with a Kling Gupta Efficiency (KGE) above 0.7 (0.8) for 30 (23) of the 33 gauge-stations. For 7 artificial reservoirs with available data, the reservoir turbinated discharges are successfully reproduced with an average KGE of 0.92. A comparison between modeled and MODIS remote sensing snow data showed an average error of < 10% across the entire basin; the model also presented a good spatio-temporal agreement both with GLEAMS potential (and actual evapotranspiration) with an average KGE of 0.63 (0.60) and a high-level of correlation (0.5 on average) with the ASCAT satellite retrieved soil moisture. The findings of this paper demonstrate the potential of the open-source, component-based, GEOframe system to build a HDT, to provide a reliable and long term (39 years) estimation of all the water cycle components in a complex anthropized river basin at high spatial resolution. Spatially detailed HDT models results of this type can be used to inform basin-wise adaptation policy decisions and better water management practices in a time of changing climate. Experimental tests for dynamic identification of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges by means of Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) are increasingly used in common engineering practice. Nevertheless, especially when measurements are carried out under in-service conditions (i.e. under traffic induced vibrations), some drawbacks should be carefully considered, especially in the damping-ratio quantification. As a matter of fact, the estimation is affected by several factors: i) the length of the signals, ii) the non-stationarity of the input process, and iii) the dependence on the vibration amplitude. Even if the damping ratio is a key parameter in the bridge dynamics, a major part of these aspects has not been yet fully investigated to estimate reliable values. Starting from a dynamic test program on a short-span RC bridge with half-joints in Italy, this paper investigates the issues mentioned above for the damping ratio estimation of the first two modes focusing on: i) the influence of the signal length, ii) the effects of the signals properties, and iii) their correlation with the vibration amplitude. Both the Stochastic Subspace Identification technique fed with the signal covariance (SSI-cov) and the Random Decrement technique (RD) have been used to compute the damping ratios from the collected signals. This paper shows how a convergence of the results cannot be attained by simply increasing the sample size, suggesting that the nature of the vibration itself influences the damping values. A negative, although weak, correlation between the damping ratio and the power of the signals indicates that several factors play a crucial role in the damping estimation in the short span RC bridges with half-joints. The Italian coastal and marine space includes areas with remarkable differences in terms of oceanographic characteristics, maritime uses, natural habitats, species distribution, landscape and cultural heritage. In Italy, coastal and marine management competencies are shared among national, regional, and for some aspects even local authorities. This geographic heterogeneity and governance complexity required the adoption of a multi-scalar approach to Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP). Such an approach aims at implementing decision-making and spatial planning at multiple and nested scales. In the case of Italy, the multi-scalar approach included the definition of national guidelines and the development of three maritime spatial (MS) plans, one for each maritime area (Adriatic, Ionian and Central Mediterranean, and Tyrrhenian and Western Mediterranean), including subareas and nested planning units. The development of the MS plans involved competent Ministries, the coastal Regions and several researchers. Based on the description of the adopted six-phase methodology and the exemplification of results of the Italian MSP process, this paper discusses the most relevant features and common challenges of multi-scalar MSP (i.e. co-planning, vertical and horizontal integration, multi-level governance, scalability, flexibility, integration of data and knowledge with different resolution, multi-scalar stakeholder engagement). Transgender and gender-expansive (TGE) children struggle to express their identities freely, particularly within schools, where they face oppression across interconnected levels of gender and age, alongside cisnormativity and adultism. This study examines how parents advocate for the recognition and well-being of TGE children in Italian primary schools (ages 6–11). Seventeen parents of TGE children participated in this research. Employing a comprehensive thematic analysis using a codebook approach, insights are derived from data obtained through two distinct research collections. Findings reveal parental practices spanning from supportive to containment and unaffirming, impacting children's freedom of expression. Parents' containment practices aim to protect their children, perceiving the school context as hostile, due to a systemic lack of knowledge and a normative view of TGE experiences. School practices affect TGE students' well-being and academic progress, suggesting the need for improved regulations in schools and teacher training to effectively address gender diversity, while recognizing and validating TGE children's experiences. The paper calls for inclusive policies and practices to support TGE children by centering children's needs and desires while dismantling cisnormative and adultistic approaches. The present paper aims at contributing to the knowledge of rhodolith beds by describing the associated macroalgal assemblages of two beds in the western Mediterranean Sea: Gorgona Island in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area in the southern Sardinia. Patterns of biodiversity and spatial variability were investigated through a multifactorial sampling design. A total of 84 macroalgal species was identified, 17 Heterokontophyta, 7 Chlorophyta, 1 Prasinodermatophyta and 59 Rhodophyta. Significant differences between beds were detected and the main species characterizing the two beds were highlighted. During the Early Jurassic, the shallow marine carbonate platforms of the western-Tethys margins were characterized by highly diverse benthos including larger foraminifera, sponges, bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, echinoderms, and dasycladalean calcareous algae. In this paper, we document examples of such assemblages within the lower Pliensbachian part of the Rotzo Formation (upper Orbitopsella Zone) of the Southern Alps, Italy. This carbonate succession was deposited in a complex mosaic of marine and brackish habitats within a tropical lagoon of the Trento Platform area. Large terebratulide brachiopod shells form autochthonous accumulations comprising exceptionally well-preserved monospecific assemblages of Lychnothyris rotzoana. These brachiopod-bearing successions were analysed in terms of biotic components, microfacies analysis, shell biofabric (three-dimensional arrangement of skeletal elements), and taphonomic signatures to understand brachiopod response to changing conditions within a highly variable lagoonal palaeoecosystem. Findings show that terebratulide shell accumulations are dominated by adult specimens and juveniles are rare. The brachiopods thrived during low energy conditions that resulted in the accumulation of highly temporally-condensed shell beds. Stabilized by microbialite encrustations, the shells were not re-oriented during the subsequent rapid burial. The abrupt demise of these communities was possibly related to rapid environmental change, and causal factors are discussed. Results show that renewable energy community is an extremely profitable paradigm for promoting the use of renewables at residential buildings scale. An international conference on the oceanography of the Ross Sea was held in Naples, Italy in July 2023. A total of 75 abstracts were presented orally, and 20 presented as posters. Researchers from 11 countries attended, with conference support from a variety of public and private firms. The conference was held under the patronage of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the Southern Ocean Observing System, the Ministero dell'Università e della Ricera, the Programma Nazionale di Recerche in Antartide, and the Commissione Oceanografica Italiana, and was organized by Parthenope University of Naples and Marche Polytechnic University of Ancona. The papers included were either presented at the meeting or were closely related to the conference's goals and program. Economists and other social scientists are increasingly leveraging web data to tackle socio-economic issues and integrate existing sources of information. The data generated by online platforms and websites offer a wealth of multidimensional information with diverse potential applications in economic analysis. Online job advertisement data, for instance, allows us to enhance our understanding of the labour market by providing timely insights into business demand and the skills required for various job positions. This paper examines skill similarities at the regional level in Italy and the variations in skills sought by businesses over time using Lightcast data for 2019 and 2020. In light of this, we use two measures related to the regional skill similarities, an index for the regional skill changes, jointly with some features of the local economy, in order to provide a picture of Italian regions. • We analysed online job ads data to study similarities and changes (between 2019 and 2020) in the skill sets across Italian regions. • We used the ESCO taxonomy to apply an index of by-occupation skill importance. The ongoing erosion of beaches due to anthropic pressure, together with the effects of sea level rise are expected to have devastating effects on sandy coastlines. This paper identifies the Italian beaches under threat and their regional distribution, examining the implications for beach-dependent activities and coastal management, based on the integration of various projections and datasets. As a result, by the year 2050 erosion is expected to affect 70% of Italian beaches. One-fifth of the current beaches' surface is likely to be almost completely submerged by 2050 and 45% by the end of the century, with the regions of Sardinia, Campania, Lazio, and Apulia likely to lose more than half of their equipped beaches. Although beaches naturally tend to migrate landward when subjected to erosion, and such shift can be favoured by managed retreat measures, these solutions are severely limited by the increasing urbanisation of back beaches. Adaptation in Italy is almost exclusively based on coastal protections, which exacerbate overall erosion and undermine beaches' natural resilience. A transformative and nature-based rethinking of the coastal management regime is needed to avoid the artificialization of a huge portion of the sandy coastline and increasing threats to coastal settlements and economies. This paper presents an updated panorama of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic burials in Italy, with references to the trend known for the European area. The entire repertoire is divided into two macroblocks, the Gravettian and the Epigravettian. The Gravettian burials are characterized by a certain variability (number of deceased, decubitus) and at the same time by a marked homogeneity relating to the richness of the grave goods, with a strong aesthetic-emotional value. The funerary ritual seems aimed at maintaining the identity of the deceased through the originality of the grave goods and personal ornaments. The second block of burials refers to the Final Epigravettian, in the last millennia of the Pleistocene. The funerary practice maintains some traditional characteristics but the ideology has changed: the burials are very sober and the grave goods are very poor or absent (with the exception of Liguria). In the chronological range of approximately 20-13,000 BP, only one burial (Romito 9) is currently known, dating to the Evolved Epigravettian, which is still influenced by the Gravettian tradition. The Mesolithic culture of death accentuates the Epigravettian character of sobriety. In the chrono-cultural complex examined, the ritual procedures identify some micro-regions which, albeit with a cosmopolitan inspiration, take on original features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Broccoli raab (Brassica rapa L.) is a cruciferous vegetable primarily grown in the southern regions of Italy. Distinguished from the more common broccoli head (B. oleracea), its edible parts consist of sprouts, buds, younger stems, and leaves. Considering the high perishability of broccoli raab, it is necessary to apply postharvest technologies to make it a ready-to-use product. In this paper, active modified atmosphere packaging (aMAP, closed at 3% O 2 and 97% N 2) was applied, in combination with two types of packaging materials (polypropylene/polyamide microperforated, PP/PA MF, and polypropylene, PP). Shrink-wrap packaging and air-storage were included as control measures. The purpose was to assess the effects of different packaging conditions on enhancing knowledge about volatile compound development and quality aspects of the produce. Both packaging materials resulted in a 10% accumulation of CO 2 , combined with 1% O 2 for PP bags and 10% for PP/PA. Different gas mixtures led to varied sensory and volatile development in minimally processed broccoli raab during storage. PP exhibited the lowest odor score (1.2, well below the marketability limit) and the highest concentrations of off-odor-related volatile compounds (ethanol, acetaldehyde, dimethyldisulfide, dimethyltrisulfide, and methanethiol) while samples packed in PP/PA MF reached an intermediate odor score with superior visual quality evaluation up to 12 days of storage. Both packaging materials reduced weight loss compared to control samples, up to less than 2% and 6%, respectively. In conclusion, active MAP using PP/PA MF bags demonstrated the best suitability in maintaining broccoli raab quality, with a final gaseous composition of 10% O 2 and 12% CO 2 deemed optimal for storage. • Information concerning broccoli raab volatilome was previously lacking. • Gases evolution within the bags affected sensory aspects and product volatilome. • Off-odor development in PP-packed samples is due to CO 2 accumulation and anoxia. • PP/PA MF-aMAP treatment maintained better visual quality of the product up to 12d. • Active MAP+PP/PA microperforated film is a suitable combination to store broccoli raab. We show, for the first time over Italy and over part of the central Mediterranean Basin, the impact of lightning data assimilation (LDA) on the strokes forecast for a long period. We use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the Dynamic Lightning Scheme (DLS) at convection allowing horizontal resolution (3 km). We carried out a two-seasons experiment (summer 2020 and fall 2021) providing the forecast of lightning and precipitation for the next 6 h (nowcasting), considering two sub-periods (0-3 h and 3-6 h) for verification. The LDA is done through a nudging scheme that increases the water vapor mass in the mixed-phase region based on observed flash density rates and simulated graupel mixing ratio. No changes are made to the model run if spurious convection is predicted or no flashes are observed. LDA can trigger convection missed by the control forecast, without LDA, and/or can redistribute the strokes predicted to be more consistent with observations. LDA has a positive impact on strokes forecast, improving correct forecasts and reducing false alarms. This improvement is however confined to the first three-hours of forecast with negligible to negative impact for longer time ranges, in line with other studies. The improvement pattern is different in summer and fall, depending on the convection development. The analysis of the Fraction Skill Score shows the usefulness of the forecast for practical purposes, considering the current areas used by the Civil Protection Department to issue meteorological alerts for intense convective events over Italy. Finally, it is shown that the forecast at the short-range (0−3 h) using LDA can improve the strokes forecast issued on the previous day, not using LDA, and the methodology of this paper can be applied to issue warnings and alerts as the storm is approaching. A brief examination of rainfall forecast shows positive impact of LDA at the short-range (0-3 h), with neutral impact for longer time ranges. The different impact of LDA on the strokes and precipitation forecasts is also highlighted. • Lightning data assimilation improves the lightning and precipitation forecast for the first three-hours in summer and fall. • The pattern of improvement is different in summer and fall. • The very short-term forecast refines the previous day forecast as the storm is approaching. Numerous researchers point out the emergence of human symbolism is related to the evolution of the complexity of human cognition. Red mineral pigments have been used extensively, particularly with anatomically modern humans, for various purposes. However, the management and supply of these pigments during prehistoric periods remains poorly investigated. Still today, the limited application of physico-chemical analyses often leads to a simplistic attribution of these pigments as ochre. The studies of data from recent literature presented in our paper show a progressive introduction and exploitation of cinnabar ore, to achieve a red pigment, from the seventh millennium BC. In this panorama, the new data obtained from the analyses of samples of artefacts from La Marmotta (Italy) show a wide use of cinnabar in central Italy from the early Neolithic and attest to the earliest use of this ore in the western Mediterranean area. • Pigments can provide insight into changes in the traditions and symbolic practices of human groups during prehistoric times. • XRF and Raman analyses are used to determine pigment composition. • Residues on personal ornaments at La Marmotta (Italy) attest to the first use of cinnabar in the Western Mediterranean. • The chrono-cultural diffusion of cinnabar in the Mediterranean basin follow the arrhythmic wave of the Neolithisation. Venosa-Notarchirico is a musealized Lower Paleolithic site in southern Italy (Basilicata), where a human femoral shaft was discovered in 1985. The fossil specimen can be evaluated in the new light of excavations started in 2016, which provide a more updated and extensive picture of the site, including the crucial Ar/Ar date of 661-614 ka for the human specimen. This makes the fossil diaphysis from Venosa-Notarchirico (Vn-H1) the oldest fossil hominin found so far in the Italian peninsula, associated with the earliest evidence of genuine Acheulean in Europe. In this paper, we report a comparative morphometric analysis of this femur, as well as a paleopathological reappraisal of the periosteal alteration that affects the specimen, supported by an unpublished histological analysis. Vn-H1 represents the proximal two-thirds of a right femur lacking the epiphyseal region. We argue it belonged to an immature individual, possibly a juvenile (late adolescent). Its features suggest that the specimen may refer to an archaic (i.e. , non-modern) human species, also showing morphological differences compared to fossil samples of the Neanderthal lineage. We also support the identification of a pathological condition affecting Vn-H1, particularly evident in some preserved portions of the mid-shaft as described here. Its etiology is discussed after differential diagnosis, which led us to suggest an alteration of inflammatory origin, viewed as a nonspecific periosteal response. • Functional beta diversity is considered a key signature of many ecological processes. • We propose to decompose this variability into three additive components. • These three components can be used to portray the functional resemblance among sites on a ternary diagram. The variability in species composition among a set of sampling sites, or beta diversity, is considered a key signature of the ecological processes that shape the spatial structure of species assemblages. In this paper, we propose to decompose this variability into three additive components: i) the standard similarity in the (relative) abundances of species among sites, ii) the degree of functional dissimilarity between individuals of distinct species among sites, and iii) the degree of functional similarity between individuals of distinct species among sites, or beta redundancy. These three components can be used to portray the functional resemblance among sites on a ternary diagram. With the resulting ternary diagram of 'functional resemblance' we can relate various aspects of taxonomic and functional variability among sites to community assembly processes more completely than just looking at individual components. Many historic centers in Italy and around the world consist of ancient masonry buildings closely packed together or constructed in clusters for defensive purposes. Alternatively, the recent population growth in modern megalopolises, coupled with the increasing use of reclaimed soils to address land scarcity, has resulted in the development of highly densely urbanized areas placed on soft or very soft soils. In both scenarios, neighboring structures, despite being structurally separate, may interact with one another through the underlying soil. To gain new insights into this phenomenon, the paper presents a comprehensive numerical study. It analyzes the static and dynamic responses of three closely-spaced shallow foundations in both the time and frequency domains using a rigorous 3D continuum approach. The conducted parametric study considers the effects of foundation spacing, oscillation frequency, and soil configuration (homogeneous or layered), quantifying their impact on the soil-foundation impedance matrix. The results of the numerical study reveal distinct responses between the central and lateral foundations of a group of three shallow foundations placed on the same subsoil. A comparison is drawn between the response of the pivotal foundation within a group of three identical footings and its response when paired or isolated. As an extension of an earlier work of the authors (Zeolla et al., 2023), a simplified approach is proposed to address cross-interaction effects in design practice. This approach introduces a set of group factors to modify the impedance matrix of the primary foundation when surrounded by closely-spaced neighbors. The practical approach is applied to estimate the increase in the fundamental period of a masonry terrace house. The cross-interaction effect is deemed non-negligible and warrants consideration in such squat structures, as it can result in significant increases in spectral acceleration along the ascending branch of the design spectrum. The development of advanced, high gradient accelerating structures is one of the leading activity of the particle accelerator community. In the technological research of new construction methods for these devices, high-power testing is a critical step for the verification of their viability. Recent experiments showed that accelerating cavities made out of hard copper, fabricated without high-temperature processes, can achieve better performance as compared with soft copper ones. Recently, we have built cavities using Tungsten Inert Gas welding and the high-power experiments confirmed that this joining process is a robust and low-cost alternative to brazing or diffusion bonding. This is a good solution for high-gradient operation, with a gradient of about 150 MV/m in X-band, at a breakdown rate of 1 0 − 3 /pulse/meter using a shaped RF pulse with a 150 ns flat part. We continue the design, construction and high power tests of three-cells standing-wave X-band accelerating cavities fabricated with a split-open geometry, made of hard copper and vacuum-sealed by welding. Our aim is the fabrication of accelerating structures made out of hard copper alloys by using innovative cost-effective technologies. Moreover, our method of multiple-sector structures opens the way to new technological approaches and design methods, for example providing the possibility of placing dampers of the parasitic higher-order modes. Such structures with dampers allow for acceleration of multi-bunch beams, both in standing and in travelling-wave accelerating modality. This paper describes the design of two cavities made of multiple sectors that were fabricated at the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics in Frascati, Italy (INFN-LNF), assembled by means of clamping and then joined with the Tungsten Inert Gas welding in order to preserve the hardness of the metal. These are three-cell standing-wave X-band accelerating cavities, to be operated in the π -mode. We report the low-power RF tests of the first one, made of two halves, and the RF design of the second one, made of four quadrants. Smart monitoring systems in orchards can automate agriculture monitoring processes and provide useful information about the presence of insects, such as the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), that threaten the production quantity and quality of fruit such as pears. Unlike other approaches in the literature, we propose a low-cost image monitoring system which exhibits a very low power consumption without compromising much of the accuracy that existing expensive systems incorporating significant computing and processing capability can achieve in such applications. The proposed system relies on a microcontroller unit and a camera which can take pictures of a double-sided sticky insect trap which, with the help of novel machine learning algorithms, can report on the presence of BMSB via a long-range communication link. The Internet of Things data capture and analysis system has recently been deployed in a real orchard in Italy which is subject to BMSB infestation and the first images have been analysed. This paper presents how the system works, the image processing, detection and classification algorithms, as well as a demonstration of the memory and energy consumption associated with the processing algorithms. Food insecurity and food surplus are two pressing issues that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents a novel approach to addressing these problems using blockchain technology. More specifically, data from the Italian Regusto platform are analysed to identify factors that determine the volume and economic value of surplus food redistribution. From a methodological statistical perspective, the performance of Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression and Random Forest are compared in a blockchain data analysis. The effective machine-learning-based analysis reveals that the Regusto platform gives people greater access to the surplus food redistributed by non-profit organizations and suppliers through both donations and sales. The study also highlights the potential effects of redistributing surplus food on the beneficiaries' diets and health and we find that redistributing surplus food can reduce household food insecurity among low-income families and communities measured by food poverty and COVID-19 indexes at different spatial locations. The 3D modeling and representation of geological data have experienced significant growth within last years, due to the use of new technologies derived from advancements in land representation methods. These technologies enable interactive, intuitive and clear geological visualizations. This paper shows how, by using the open-source Python software (operable with a simple internet browser) for machine learning (linear and KNN interpolations), together with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), it is possible to achieve interactive 3D visualizations of geological features in sedimentary basins. This study is performed in the onshore-offshore Crotone area (southern Italy) where a large amount of stratigraphic datasets are available from core perforation and seismic profiles due to the presence of a natural gas extraction field. Thanks to a database of 63 drilling lithologic records and 43 check points obtained from 9 interpreted seismic sections, several 3D HTML models were constructed defining three stratigraphic units (Pre-Messinian, Messinian, and Post-Messinian). An overlap of the Post-Messinian top surface and an erosional truncation of the Messinian top surface toward the N were observed, together with a rising of the Pre-Messinian top surface in the northwestern area. This stratigraphic architecture may indicate differential subsidence and/or uplifting due to syn-sedimentary fault kinematics in the whole studied area. The 3D models with the stratigraphic unit boundary surfaces obtained with KNN interpolation (showing stepped and abrupt edges) allowed the interpretation in terms of structural architecture and syn-sedimentary fault kinematics. Three main sets of faults were deduced: N–S; NNW-SSE, and ENE-WSW. A minorly represented E-W set was added to the main sets. These faults generated a horsts-grabens structure, and in many cases a determinate set of faults caused a progressive lowering or rising of some areas with an "en echelon" arrangement. One of the main challenges for the construction of DEMO, the first fusion demonstration reactor, is the power exhaust issue. To deal with it, EUROfusion has undertaken the construction of DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test) facility which will be held in Frascati, Italy. It aims to test various divertor models which can be integrated and used under different plasma confinement configurations. The current design of DTT embed 54 divertor cassettes which must be anchored to the vacuum vessel using suitable fixation systems. This paper deals with the initial monotonic load assessment of the fixation system of the Fixation System which must ensure compliance with multiple design requirements. The Remote Handling compatibility is one of the most demanding, since it includes a preloading phase of the divertor necessary to mitigate the shaking of the cassette due to dynamic forces. Moreover, the system must withstand the conspicuous loads acting on the Divertor due to the full or partial loss of plasma confinement (Disruptive Events). Structural verifications through Finite Element Method (FEM) have been performed on the Divertor-Fixation System, considering a set of load combinations, with particular focus on the most demanding case related to Fast-transient Vertical Disruption Event-downward. This paper investigates social stratification in the context of poor air quality's impact on educational achievement in Italy, a country characterized by high levels of air pollution and significant geographical diversity. We address two primary questions: firstly, whether students from different socio-economic backgrounds vary in their exposure to high levels of particulate matter (PM2.5) at school, and secondly, if the effect of exposure to poor air quality on academic performance differs between children from high and low socio-economic status families. Utilizing a novel dataset comprising test scores in math and reading for 456,508 8th-grade students, collected nationally in Italy in 2019, we geocode the locations of 6882 schools based on their addresses and link the level of air pollution in the surrounding areas using PM2.5 data from the Atmospheric Composition Analysis Group. To address potential confounding factors, we estimate municipality and province fixed effects and control for indicators of school neighborhood characteristics and school quality. Our analysis yields three key findings. Firstly, students from higher socio-economic backgrounds tend to attend schools with higher PM2.5 levels. However, the positive association between SES and exposure to PM2.5 disappears when adding province and municipality fixed effects, suggesting that the positive association can be explained by selection into provinces and municipalities by SES. Secondly, we identify a small yet consistent negative effect of PM2.5 on math and reading test scores. Thirdly, this adverse impact is primarily observed among students from low socio-economic backgrounds. We conclude that the relationship between environmental risks and disparities in educational achievement based on social background in Italy is nuanced and critically influenced by the country's specific context. • We propose a new method to quantify Climate Change Effects at hydrological scales. • The method allows to assimilate climatic projections in CDFs at rain gauge scale. • The initial (i.e., before any change scenario begins) skewness plays a crucial role. • A strong increase of outliers frequency is expected for series EV1 alike skewed. Quantifying the potential effects of Climate Change (CC) on hydrological scales is a topic with a more and more increasing interest for the scientific community, given the CC impact on agriculture, industry, economy, human health, ecosystems, among the others. In this context, the paper focuses on the sub-daily Annual Maxima (AM) of rainfall height time series, and specifically on the crucial role played by initial skewness, i.e. the skewness of the observed rainfall series used to evaluate potential parametric trends. Here a quick and user-friendly methodology is proposed, that is aimed at quantifying plausible future changes in terms of probability distributions assumed at rain gauge scale, from projections of any climatic model. In detail, the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) and the Two-Component Extreme Value (TCEV) distributions are adopted as probability functions suitable for modelling observed rainfall AM series, which could increase their frequency and magnitude into future horizons under CC. EURO-CORDEX projections for Europe are considered, under the hypothesis that the values of the change factor, i.e. the ratio between the values of a specific quantile at two specific time horizons, are invariant when moving from an areally-averaged scale (typical for any climate model) to a point rain gauge scale, which induces that future changes are provided (in terms of frequency and magnitude of extreme events) without the need of any spatial downscaling from the assumed projections. The proposed methodology can contribute to hazard quantification associated to potential climate changes, and thus it can play a crucial role in the assessment of hydraulic structures resilience; the obtained results, specific for the study area of Italy, but easily extendable on a global scale, showed that larger increases in frequency of future heavy events are expected for time series with "EV1 alike" values of initial skewness. The Nirano Salse in Italy is a well-studied site where natural gas seepage (NGS) and other hydrocarbon fluids and gases are emitted at the earth's surface. A novel integrated approach is applied to define a comprehensive structural interpretation of the gas seepage and flow dynamic in the mud volcano system of the Nirano Salse Regional Nature Reserve (Modena, Northern Apennines). The paper investigates the relationship between gas emissions and local structures, particularly faults and fractures, in the shallow subsurface (down to 500–600 m depth) to understand the control that structures have on fluid ascent from deep leaky hydrocarbon traps. We performed continuous monitoring of mud levels within vents; carried out geological surveys to characterize the main stratigraphic and structural discontinuities; measured the carbon emissions (CH 4 and CO 2) seepage both from volcanoes and the surrounding soil by a portable gas fluxmeter; and integrated the results with available geophysical surveys. The authors argue that the transgressive Pleistocene-Pliocene Argille Azzurre Formation hides the complex and highly structured pre-Pliocene geology of the area, in which faults and fractures act as pathways for deep fluid ascent. The emissions are aligned along a NE-SW trend at the intersection of a NE-SW fracture system and NW-SE-oriented normal faults, which are both associated to the local tensional stress field of a likely left-lateral strike-slip transfer structure or in the extrados of a fold. By examining both natural gas macroseepage and diffuse flux, it is shown that local structures control the fluid ascent and contribute to the emission of hydrocarbon gases and fluids at the Earth's surface. Understanding the structural control of carbon emissions at the Nirano Salse is also important for evaluating the carbon budget at the site, particularly in areas where there are detectable surface emissions. The study has implications for geologic, environmental, and economic issues, including hydrocarbon exploration, hazard assessment, and impact on the atmospheric carbon budget. Furthermore, the outcomes have an important implication to evaluate the potential for dangerous abrupt mud eruptions, and the site safety in proximity to the mud volcanoes. The paper explores the role of Geographical Indications (GIs) in promoting the economic development of European regions. We consider all NUTS3 regions of Italy, France, and Spain between 1993 and 2014, and 728 GIs.. Our research aims to empirically assess the impacts of GIs on labor productivity and employment, for the agricultural and industrial sectors. We rely on a dynamic panel model and considere the spatial variation of the data. The main results show that GIs generate a positive impact on employment, both in the short and the long-run. Moreover, we find that the impact of GIs is not limited to the province where they are produced, but also triggers sizable spillover effects. • Channel dynamics of pseudomeandering rivers is poorly known. • The study river reacted very rapidly to sediment supply changes. • Deforestation resulted in an increase of sediment supply and in a braided channel. • Reforestation and gravel mining caused river incision and a low sinuosity channel. • Post mining sediment supply increase was a key factor in shaping channel morphology. Typically, pseudomeandering rivers are gravel-bed streams considered unstable and prone to turning into braided or meandering channels under the effect of external forcings. Channel changes of pseudomeandering rivers have not been investigated in detail so far. This paper analyses the response of a pseudomeandering river (the Cecina River in western central Italy) to variations of sediment supply resulting from streambed material mining and land use change throughout the last two centuries. Old maps and 11 sets of aerial images from 1954 to the present of four representative sites were used to measure the variation through time of bankfull width and channel sinuosity. The changes in the number of bends, chute channels, bank erosion, bend extension, migration and retraction were recorded and the main processes which favoured pseudomeandering river channel changes were investigated. The old maps indicate that in the first half of the XIX century, the study river had probably a braided morphology in response to the increase in sediment supply following the liberalization of deforestation. From the beginning of the XX century to the present, the river had a predominantly single thread, pseudomeandering morphology which did not change during about 20 years of intense gravel mining (the 1960s – mid-1980s) when the main response of the river was channel incision and narrowing. A few years after bed material extraction stopped the river started to widen, to increase channel sinuosity and consolidate its pseudomeandering morphology. The study confirms that marked variations in sediment supply are more effective than floods in triggering river channel changes. Circular actions cannot be considered sustainable if their financial benefits are not demonstrated. While the environmental benefits of the circular economy have been widely studied, sustainable development from a financial point of view has been much less studied. In this paper we assess the financial benefits of circular innovations applied in the fashion industry that have been previously assessed as sustainable using the Life Cycle Assessment. The focus is on two innovative processes such as salt recovery and tannin baths reuse that reuse water, chemicals and raw materials in an Italian small company operating in the tanning industry. A cost benefit analysis was carried to evaluate the net contribution of these actions to the operating margin. Then we model a forward-looking cash flow projection in order to determine the fundamental value of circular investments. Through these practices, the company achieved an increase in operating profitability above 30% and the 10-year value of the salt recovery is 159,061.40 euros, while the reused tanning water equals just over one million euros. The results show unexpected and strong financial benefits that can leverage similar initiatives that would advance resource equity and finally promote a real and convenient industrial dedication to environmental guardianship. Land degradation is a critical issue at a global level and its progressive increasing greatly reduces soil ecosystem services. In this context, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, defined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and indicated some targets of particular interest for a territory to be integrated into short- and medium-term national programs. Target 15.3, which aims to end desertification and restore degraded lands, is currently monitored by indicator 15.3.1, measured as the combination of three sub-indicators (trends in land cover change, land productivity and carbon stocks) as suggested by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the custodian agency for the SDG indicator. In our opinion, this assessment shows some weakness that are generally caused by a lack of information from direct field observations. The greatest limitation regards land productivity dynamics linked to the NDVI trajectory adopted by the UNCCD methodological approach. For this reason, the paper proposes an alternative approach that consists of using annual maximum NDVI value assessments instead of annual mean values for trajectory calculation. To come to these conclusions, the study addresses a reliability assessment by using remote sensing techniques via the Google Earth Engine (GEE) and analysing the NDVI evolution over time at 450 locations spread around the Campania region (southern Italy). To this end, a customised Graphical User Interface (GUI) was built on the GEE platform and a Google Earth time slider tool was applied to visualize land cover changes which occurred at each location over a period of 18 years (2001–2018). The survey was carried out on MODIS and Landsat 7 collections and showed that the new approach had a better performance than the UNCCD approach (90 % vs 62 % of successful reliability tests, up to 96 % considering results from Landsat images). The application of maximum NDVI values to assess productivity dynamics spatially shows, with regard to UNCCD data, more than double the percentages of degraded and stable lands and a drastic reduction in improved areas within the Campania region. Overall, this innovative approach appears to agree more closely with ground truth and the use of finer resolution data is more suitable for investigating land degradation processes within a regional context. The wine sector in Italy is a significant contributor to the country's economy. Furthermore, Italy is renowned for producing some of the world's most excellent wines. For these reasons, the wine industry is susceptible to frauds, such as reporting false origin claims in labels. In this context, this paper aims to provide traceability and quality tool to recognise wines from different Italian regions, i.e. Calabria, Piemonte, Sicily and Veneto, from selected winemakers that reach the Top 10% in almost three international rankings. The multi-elemental analysis of soil and wine samples by ICP-MS and their chemometric treatments have identified Ni, Cs, Li, Ca, Ba, Pb, Rb, Sb, Fe and U as the most informative variables to reach optimal classification of samples. In recent decades, austerity measures have been widely adopted in public healthcare systems, so as to cope with financial constraints. This paper assesses the impact of a specific austerity policy implemented in Italy since 2007, with the purpose of reducing the budget deficit of regional governments originated by an excessive healthcare expenditure, the so called Recovery Plans (Piani di rientro). We exploit this context for a counterfactual analysis of the effects of Recovery Plans on the technical efficiency of hospitals operating in the regions where the Plans have been implemented, using as a control group similar hospitals in the regions where the policies were not enacted. The empirical analysis is based on a unique sample of administrative data relative to a large panel of hospitals in the period 2003–2010, and it employs, as identification strategy, the exogenous introduction of the austerity policy in some regions. We find that the policy had a detrimental effect on the efficiency of the hospitals operating in the regions subjected to the policy. In dealing with personnel management in companies, two fundamental planning issues have to be handled: staff rostering and activities assignment. These two problems have historically been treated separately, in a sequential way; however, it is evident how strongly they are tied to each other and that solution quality inevitably drops if this connection is not taken into proper account. For this reason, also taking advantage of the massive recent advances in software and hardware technologies, the integrated task scheduling and personnel rostering problem (TSPR) has been formalized along with suitable algorithmic approaches to tackle both planning stages altogether. In this paper, we describe how the peculiar and complex case of airport ground staff was handled in a scenario defined by real-world data from a large airport in Italy. Specifically, we show that the problem can be cast into a mixed integer linear programming model. We then show that, to make the problem computationally tractable, the introduction within the model of a set of suitable valid inequalities is crucial. Indeed, as opposed to the base model from the literature, the novel, improved formulation allowed to effectively obtain near-optimal solutions in reasonable time even for the considered large-scale and real-world scenario. • The problem of simultaneously deciding shifts and duties in airports is addressed. • The resulting Integrated TSPR problem can be modeled as a MIP program. • The introduction of valid inequalities into the model is computationally beneficial. • 10 large real-world instances of the problem have been solved. This paper investigates drivers or hindrances to households' adoption of behavioural changes concerning energy efficiency at home. A Choice Experiment survey has been conducted to elicit households' preferences regarding adoption of innovative heating/cooling systems in Ireland and Italy. The choice data is analysed through a Latent Class model, and posterior analysis is used for class profiling, aimed to detect the emergence of factors identified in the literature. In both country samples respondents could be grouped in three classes according to their preferences and willingness to pay for adoption of innovative heat pump systems. Early adopters, younger and with higher education, exhibit strong pro-innovation attitudes. Conversely, Laggards, typically older and less educated, display hesitancy, and may require substantial subsidies for adoption. Late adopters value trialability and rely less on social networks. Information processing varies according to individual capabilities and social contexts. Hence, we recommend targeted information to enhance awareness of benefits and on feasibility of installation in different types of dwelling.
