Mangrove shoreline retreat or advance is a natural process in a mangrove delta. However, due to various natural and anthropogenic stressors, mangrove shoreline retreat is the second largest cause of mangrove loss globally. It is important to understand the scale at which mangrove shoreline changes are causing biophysical changes along the mangrove shorelines and, in turn, understand if certain biophysical characteristics can explain the changes along the shoreline. This will help identify the response of mangroves to shoreline changes. Videography and spatial mapping were used to study temporarily and permanently changing mangrove shorelines in the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world (~10,000 km 2 ), located in India and Bangladesh. Data was collected along a ~ 239 km shoreline at 54 sites. 36.4 % of all the studied shorelines were experiencing major retreat, 63.8 % and 27.2 % of all (major and minor) retreating areas had 1-25 % and > 25 % dead trees. The biophysical characteristics statistically (P < 0.0001) associated with retreating mangrove shorelines were - cliff-type shoreline profiles, number of dead trees, and absence of stream and grass, with shoreline profiles as the strongest predictor of shoreline retreat. Moreover, 68.7 % and 73 % of historically retreating shorelines had a cliff-type shoreline profile and Excoecaria agallocha as the dominating species, respectively. Moreover, due to the strong correlation between historical changes and current shoreline types, it was concluded that characteristics along the shoreline are partly a product of historical shoreline transitions. The study focused on marine bacteria, specifically Bacillus cereus, sourced from heavily polluted coastal areas in Tamil Nadu, aiming to assess their efficacy in degrading low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene over a 42-day period. When LDPE and polystyrene films were incubated with Bacillus cereus, they exhibited maximum weight losses of 4.13 ± 0.81 % and 14.13 ± 2.41 %, respectively. Notably, polystyrene exhibited a higher reduction rate (0.0036 day -1 ) and a shorter half-life (195.29 days). SEM images of the treated LDPE and polystyrene unveiled surface erosion with cracks. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis revealed elevated carbon content and the presence of oxygen in the treated LDPE and polystyrene films. The ATR-FTIR spectra exhibited distinctive peaks corresponding to functional groups, with observable peak shifts in the treated films. Notable increases were detected in carbonyl, internal double bond, and vinyl indices across all treated groups. Additionally, both treated LDPE and polystyrene showed reduced crystallinity. Spatial analysis of infectious diseases can play an important role in mapping the spread of diseases and can support policy making at local level. Moreover, identification of disease clusters based on local geography and landscape forms the basis for disease control and prevention. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the spatial-temporal variations, hotspot areas, and potential risk factors of infectious diseases (including Viral Hepatitis, Typhoid and Diarrhea) in Ahmedabad city of India. We used Moran's I and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) mapping to detect spatial clustering of diseases. Spatial and temporal regression analysis was used to identify the association between disease incidence and spatial risk factors. The Moran's I statistics identified presence of positive spatial autocorrelation within the considered diseases, with Moran's I from 0.09 for typhoid to 0.21 for diarrhea (p < 0.001). This indicates a clustering of affected wards for each disease, suggesting that cases were not randomly distributed across the city. LISA mapping demonstrated the clustering of hotspots in central regions of the city, especially towards the east of the river Sabarmati, highlighting key geographical areas with elevated disease risk. The spatial clusters of infectious diseases were consistently associated with slum population density and illiteracy. Furthermore, temporal analysis suggested illiteracy rates could increase risk of viral hepatitis by 13 % (95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 1.01-1.26) and of diarrhea by 18 % (95 % CI: 1.07-1.31). Significant inverse association was also seen between viral hepatitis incidence and the distance of wards from rivers. Conclusively, the study highlight the impact of socio-economic gradients, such as slum population density (indicative of poverty) and illiteracy, on the localized transmission of water and foodborne infections. Roadside soil contamination is mostly caused by human-caused pollutant deposition. PTEs are among the many substances that are harmful for both humans and the environment. PTE concentrations in roadside soil in Chennai, southern India, have been determined in this study. To evaluate the seriousness of the threats, more environmental and geochemical indices have been applied. 83 soil samples have been obtained from the study regions and focusing on important roads. Elemental analysis has been analyzed with ED-XRF and sieve-filtered samples focused on PTEs such as arsenic, barium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, nickel, lead, thorium, titanium, zinc, and uranium. Significant metallic variations have been found in soil samples around roads by the investigation. The elements this study examined section ascending in the following sequence: Fe > Ti > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > Th > As > U > K. In the research area, the CD classification denotes high contamination, whereas the CF indices show mild to significant pollution. PLI indicates moderate to high pollution, whereas EF suggests excessive enrichment. Igeo demonstrates a range from uncontaminated to highly contaminated. PERI showed high levels in the northern study region, whereas GUFI shows several hot spots indicating moderate to severe pollution. The Hazard Index (HI) values for all metals were less than one, demonstrating the absence of non-carcinogenic risks for both adults and children. Multivariate data show natural and anthropogenic PTEs in roadside soil. Appropriate and timely first aid reduces morbidity in burns. This study aims to assess the knowledge of first aid in burns among healthcare workers (HCW) and nonhealthcare workers. (NHCW)., Methods: A survey, distributed in both paper and Google survey formats, presented five sample cases with multiple-choice answers. Participants recorded the most suitable first aid management for each scenario. Correct answers were provided on completion., Results: Out of the total 753 participants, only 89 (11.8%) got all five answers correct. 16% HCW and 6% NHCW could answer all 5 questions correctly (with a true HCW:NHCW ratio of 2.67:1). Providing care for individuals with burns substantially raised the probability of giving accurate responses (p = 0.0001). While attending the general First Aid Course did not affect the responses (p = 0.08), participation in the Burns First Aid Course demonstrated slightly improved results (p = 0.052). The scenario involving liquid petroleum gas leakage saw a high proportion of correct responses, likely influenced by media coverage., Conclusion: We find a clear need for adequate training in burns first aid due to low awareness among healthcare workers (HCW) and non-healthcare workers (NHCW). In India, newborn screening (NBS) is essential for detecting health problems in infants. Despite significant progress, significant gaps and challenges persist. India has made great strides in genomics dueto the existence of the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal. The work emphasizes the challenges NBS programs confront with technology, budgetary constraints, insufficient counseling, inequality in illness panels, and a lack of awareness. Advancements in technology, such as genetic testing and next-generation sequencing, are expected to significantly transform the process. The integration of analytical tools, artificial intelligence, and machine learning algorithms could improve the efficiency of newborn screening programs, offering a personalized healthcare approach. It is critical to address gaps in information, inequities in illness incidence, budgetary restrictions, and inadequate counseling. Strengthening national NBS programs requires increased public awareness and coordinated efforts between state and central agencies. Quality control procedures must be used at every level for implementation to be successful. Additional studies endeavor to enhance NBS in India through public education, illness screening expansion, enhanced quality control, government incentive implementation, partnership promotion, and expert training. This study aimed to examine the effects of spatial and temporal variability in edaphic, and climatic attributeson soil net nitrogen mineralization rate, and to understand the pattern of fine root decomposition of dominant and co-dominant tree species, and its influence on the nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Study was carried out at four different sites in sub-tropical forest ecosystems of Shorea robusta, in foothills of Central Himalayan region, India. Co-dominant tree species at four sites were Mallotus philippensis (site A), Glochidion velutinum (site B), Holarrhena pubescens (site C), and Tectona grandis (site D). Buried bag technique was used for nitrogen mineralization, while fine root decomposition was determined using fine root mesh bags. Seasonal variation, soil depth, soil characteristics, and site variability, all significantly (p < 0.05) affected nitrogen mineralization rates. Fine root decomposition was significantly affected by nutrient concentration of fine roots. Total mineral nitrogen was maximum at site D (16.24 ± 0.96 μg g -1 soil), while minimum at site C (10.10 ± 0.84 μg g -1 soil). Maximum nitrogen mineralization (13.18 ± 0.18 μg g -1  month -1 ) was recorded during summer season at site D, while the minimum nitrogen mineralization (3.20 ± 0.46 μg g -1  month -1 ) was recorded during rainy season at site C. Inorganic-N and net nitrogen mineralization was relatively higher in 0-20 cm soil layer than 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm soil layer. The fine roots showed 70.61-74.82 % weight loss on completion of 365 days of decomposition process. Maximum fine root decomposition was observed in the G. velutinum, and minimum in T. grandis. A significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) was observed between root nitrogen and carbon content, and decomposition rates per month. Rania-Khan Chandpur site, (Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh, India), one of the highly Chromium (Cr) contaminated sites in India due to Chromite Ore Processing Residue (COPR), has been investigated at the field-scale. We found that the area around the COPR dumps was hazardously contaminated with the Cr where its concentrations in the surface water and groundwater were > 40 mgL -1 , its maximum contents in the COPRs and in the soils of the adjoining lands were 9.6 wt% and 3.83 wt%, respectively. By exploring the vegetation and microbial distribution across the site, we advocate the appropriateness of Cynodon dactylon, Chrysopogon zizanioides, Cyperus sp., and Typha angustifolia as the most suitable phytoremediation agent because their association with Cr remediating bacterial species (Pseudomonas sp., Clostridium sp. and Bacillus sp.) was strong. Plastic particles, measuring <5 mm in size, mainly originate from larger plastic debris undergoing degradation, fragmenting into even smaller fragments. The goal was to analyze the spatial diversity and polymer composition of microplastics (MPs) in North Chennai, South India, aiming to evaluate their prevalence and features like composition, dimensions, color, and shape. In 60 sediment samples, a combined count of 1589 particles were detected, averaging 26 particles per 5 g -1 of dry sediment. The water samples from the North Chennai vicinity encompassed a sum of 1588 particles across 71 samples, with an average of 22 items/L. The majority of MPs ranged in size from 1 mm to 500 μm. The ATR-FTIR results identified the predominant types of MPs as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polypropylene in sediment and water. The spatial variation analysis revealed high MPs concentration in landfill sites, areas with dense populations, and popular tourist destinations. The pollution load index in water demonstrated that MPs had contaminated all stations. Upon evaluating the polymeric and pollution risks, it was evident that they ranged from 5.13 to 430.15 and 2.83 to 15,963.2, which is relatively low to exceedingly high levels. As the quantity of MPs and hazardous polymers increased, the level of pollution and corresponding risks also escalated significantly. The existence of MPs in lake water, as opposed to open well water, could potentially pose a cancer risk for both children and adults who consume it. Background: Food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is abundantly present in nature and accountable for sporadic and epidemic cases of listeriosis in humans. The objective of this study was to screen common food sources for L. monocytogenes using biochemical and molecular methods to detect and characterise its toxin genes as well as for biofilm formation., Methods: A total of 92 samples, comprising dairy and street food products, were randomly collected from various sources for this investigation. The collected samples were processed for biochemical and molecular methods to detect L. monocytogenes. Additionally, virulence factors associated genes, antibiogram profiles and biofilm formation related assays were determined., Results: L. monocytogenes presence was confirmed using molecular detection methods targeting prs and lmo1030 genes, along with MALDI-TOF MS. Following 16 S rRNA sequencing, the identified Listeria species were further categorised into two groups. L. monocytogenes was detected in two (2.17%) food samples tested (L-23 and L-74). Multiplex PCR indicated the presence of seven virulence-related genes in L. monocytogenes isolates, i.e., inlA, inlB, prfA, iap, actA, plcB, and hlyA. In addition, 17 antibiotics were tested, whereby two isolates showed resistance to clindamycin and azithromycin, while one isolate (L-74) was also resistant to nalidixic acid, co-trimoxazole, ampicillin, norfloxacin, and cefotaxime. Cyclones can cause devastating impacts, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and flooding. The aftermath includes infrastructure damage, loss of life, displacement of communities, and ecological disruptions. Timely response and recovery efforts are crucial to minimize the socio-economic and environmental consequences of cyclones. To accelerate the time-consuming risk assessment process, particularly in geographically diverse regions, a blend of multi-criteria decision-making and machine learning models was utilized. This novel approach swiftly assessed cyclone risk and the impact of the Gaja cyclone in Nagapattinam, India. The method involved assigning weights to distinct criteria, unveiling notable vulnerability aspects like elevation, slope, proximity to the coast, distance from cyclone tracts, Lu/Lc, population density, proximity to cyclone shelters, household density, accessibility to healthcare facilities, NDVI, and levels of awareness. Daddavari, Ettugudi, Kodikarai, Vedharanyam, Velankanni, and Thirupoondi face high/extreme cyclone risk. Nagore, Nagapattinam, Pillai, Enangudi, and Sannanllur have low/no threat. To further enhance the precision of the study, machine learning algorithms like SVM, SAM, and MLC were deployed. These models were instrumental in generating pre- and post-cyclone land use maps. The influence of Gaja cyclones effects shows decreasing of agriculture land from 34% to 30%, aquaculture increase 1%, barren land decrease from 8% to 6%, Built-up land decrease from 15% to 13%, land with scrub and salt pan also decrease from 21% to 17% and 10%-8%. Mostly effect of Gaja cyclone is dramatic increase of water body from 8% to 21%. Conducting cyclone risk zone analysis and pre/post-cyclone Land Use Land Cover (LULC) detection in Nagapattinam offers valuable insights for disaster preparedness, infrastructure planning, and climate resilience. Integrating cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance MSW management strategies and facilitate WTE-T adoption. This review paper explores waste classification, generation, and disposal methods, emphasizing public awareness to reduce waste. It discusses AI's role in waste management, including route optimization, waste composition forecasting, and process parameter optimization for energy generation. Various energy production techniques from MSW, such as high-solids anaerobic digestion, torrefaction, plasma pyrolysis, incineration, gasification, biodegradation, and hydrothermal carbonization, are examined for their advantages and challenges. The paper emphasizes risk assessment in MSW management, covering chemical, mechanical, biological, and health-related risks, aiming to identify and mitigate potential adverse effects. Management of agri-residues generated in large quantities necessitates for its accurate estimation. Data analysis using machine learning methods can predict the agri-residues generation. The objective of the study was to forecast agri-residues generation from rice, wheat, and oilseed crops in India using ML methods and their sustainable uses. Prediction of agri-residues was done first by forecasting the crop production via the application of ML techniques for the period 2022 to 2030, and then the amount of crop residues generation calculated by multiplying the crop productions with the residues-to-product-ratio (RPR) values of the respective crops. RPR was estimated by using the gravimetric ratio of the residue to the actual crop production. The crop-specific RPR values were taken from various earlier studies in Indian context. The RPR values of 1.73 for the rice, 1.65 for wheat, and 2.6 for the oilseed crop were used as a conversion factor for residues calculation. Machine learning models linear regression, sequential minimal optimization regression (SMOreg), M5 Rule, and Gaussian process were used in the study. SMOreg performed better in models tested by coefficient of determination, root mean square error, and mean absolute error. The models predicted the generation of residues in 2030 as rice straw and husk 195.76 Mt to 277.68 Mt, wheat straw 188.62 Mt to 266.95 Mt, and oilseed stalk and oil cakes 55.61 Mt to 96.30 Mt in India. The present study depicts the true failed scenario of the arsenic (As) removal units (ARU) in West Bengal by evaluating their treated water quality. Annual As removal efficiency of the 12 studied ARUs range between 35.2% and 82.6%. A comprehensive physico-chemical parameters and trace elements analysis find almost 25% and 16.7% of treated drinking water samples with poor water quality index (WQI) and high heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), respectively. The pond-based water treatment plant maintains the production of continuous As-safe water with a range between 60.2% and 66.7% due to its high Fe/As ratio. It's a discontent concluding the treated drinking water of the groundwater based-ARUs were observed with sufficient As mediated cancer risk (3 ×10 -3 ). The non-cancer risk (HQ) of As is safe for the surface water treatment plant (0.38), whereas it is threatening for the groundwater based-ARUs (7.44). However, the drinking water samples are safe in view of HQ from the other trace elements like Hg, Al, Cd, Cr, Pb, F - and NO 3 - . Small scale ARU could be a feasible mitigation strategy in reducing the As menace in the long run if the plants are maintained correctly. This investigation analyzed shoreline evolution along India's Digha Coast from 1992 to 2022, using multispectral Landsat satellite images and the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). Methods included identifying zones and transects, shoreline extraction, and applying spatial statistical techniques. The study area, divided into five zones with 587 transects, enabled both short- and long-term analysis. Key findings indicate that the mean long-term rate of shoreline change is -0.54 m per year, with 70.70 % of transects experiencing erosion and 29.30 % accretion. Notably, Zone V had the highest accretion rate (8.55 m/year), while Zone III faced the most erosion (-7.47 m/year). Short-term analysis from 1997 to 2017 indicated significant erosion, contrasting with accretion during 1992-1997 and 2017-2022. Particularly, Zones II, III, and IV underwent major erosion, especially from 1997 to 2002. The concentration and bioaccumulation of heavy metals were investigated in four distinct components (water, sediment, benthic organisms, and fish) in the Ennore estuary. The average concentration of studied metals in water is 2-5 times higher in the sediment. The geoaccumulation index in the sediment, particularly for Cd, 55 folds greater than WHO and USEPS standards. The indices like MI, C deg , PLI, and PERI demonstrated low contamination levels, whereas I geo and C f revealed elevated levels of cadmium (Cd), signifying a moderate degree of contamination. Human health indices like Target Hazard Quotation (THQ) values generally fell within permissible limits (<1), except for lead (Pb) and iron (Fe). However, HI values exceeded 1, indicating a non-carcinogenic health risk for consumers. Dyslipidemias are the most important coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factor. High total cholesterol and its principal subtypes: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and non-high-density lipoprotein (NHDL) cholesterol are the most important. Background: Deficiency of C1-inhibitor (C1-INH) protein, caused by pathogenic variants in the Serpin family G member 1 (SERPING1) gene, is the commonest pathophysiological abnormality (in ∼95 % cases) in patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE). C1-INH protein provides negative control over kallikrein-kinin system (KKS). Although the inheritance of the HAE-C1-INH is autosomal dominant, female predominance has often been observed in patients with HAE., Objective: To analyze the risk of transmission of SERPING1 gene variant from father or mother to their offspring., Methods: Pedigree charts of 42 families with a confirmed diagnosis of HAE-C1-INH and a pathogenic variant in the SERPING1 gene were analysed. Patients with HAE who had had at least one child were included for analyses to assess the risk of transmission from the father or mother to their offspring., Results: Overall, 49 % (189/385) of all offspring inherited the genetic defect. In the subgroup analyses, 54.8 % (90/164) female offspring and 44.8 % (99/221; p < 0.02) male offspring inherited the genetic defect. Inheritance of the genetic defect was significantly lower in male offspring. Fathers with SERPING1 gene variant had a statistically significant skewed transmission of the wild type to the male offspring as compared to the variant (57.8 % wild type vs. 42.1 % variant; p < 0.02), whereas no statistically significant difference was found when a father transmitted the variant to a female offspring. Mothers with SERPING1 gene variant had no statistically significant difference in variant transmission to male or female offsprings., Conclusion: Results of the study suggest that the transmission pattern of SERPING1 gene variant favours the transmission of wild-type alleles in males, especially when the father is the carrier; hence, overall, fewer males and more female offspring inherited the variant. This could be because of a selection of wild-type male sperms during spermatogenesis, as the KLK system has been reported to play a crucial role in the regulation of spermatogenesis. Scylla serrata plays a crucial role in India's seafood exports yet there exists limited understanding on the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in these crabs. In this baseline study, we examined the presence of microplastics in the digestive tracts of S. serrata collected from the Kota mangroves, southwestern coast of India. Our analysis revealed the presence of 264 MPs in all the samples with an average (± standard deviation) of 29.33 (±11.53) MPs/Individual. The most dominant categories were fibres (98.86 %) and fragments (1.14 %). Primarily 0.1-0.3 mm (50.90 %) and 0.3-1 mm (37.65 %) size range dominated. The predominant polymers were polypropylene (33.71 %), high-density polyethylene (31.44 %), and polyethylene terephthalate (17.80 %). Scanning electron microscopy revealed extensive weathering on the surface of the microplastics. In recent year, the use of plastics has become inevitable due to its unique properties that allow for the production of durable and non-durable goods. Post use, plastics enter the waste stream and now can be found in all compartments of the biosphere as microplastics (MPs). This study presents the abundance of MPs in surface water and within copepods in the southwestern Bay of Bengal during dry (June 2022) and wet season (November 2022). The MPs in the surface water were found in all three regions [Chennai, Tuticorin and Nagapattinam (four locations in each region)] and maximum in wet season (53 particles/m 3 ). Moreover, during dry season the mean ingestion of MPs by copepods in Chennai (0.103 ± 0.04 particles/individual), Tuticorin (0.11 ± 0.07 particles/individual) and Nagapattinam (0.036 ± 0.01 particles/individual) is high compared to the wet season. The maximum level of MPs found in both surface water and ingestion by copepods in Tuticorin and Chennai is subjective to the high maritime activities than Nagapattinam region. Whatever, the anthropogenic activities in the study region increase the bioavailability of MPs pollutant in the copepods and transported to higher trophic levels, endangering marine life and human health. The study made a comprehensive effort to examine climatic uncertainties at both yearly and monthly scales, along with mapping flood risks based on different land use categories. Recent studies have progressively been engrossed in demonstrating regional climate variations and associated flood probability to maintain the geo-ecological balance at micro to macro-regions. To carry out this investigation, various historical remote sensing record, reanalyzed and in-situ data sets were acquired with a high level of spatial precision using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) web-based remote sensing platform. Non-parametric techniques and multi-layer integration methods were then employed to illustrate the fluctuations in climate factors alongside creating maps indicating the susceptibility to floods. The study reveals an increased pattern in LST (Land Surface Temperature) (0.03 °C/year), albeit marginal declined in southern coastal regions (-0.15 °C/year) along with uneven rainfall patterns (1.42 mm/year). Moreover, long-term LULC change estimation divulges increased trends of urbanization (16.4 km 2 /year) together with vegetation growth (8.7 km 2 /year) from 2002 to 2022. Furthermore, this inquiry involves numerous environmental factors that influence the situation (elevation data, topographic wetness index, drainage density, proximity to water bodies, slope, and soil properties) as well as socio-economic attributes (population) to assess flood risk areas through the utilization of Analytical Hierarchy Process and overlay methods with assigned weights. The present investigation is the first of its kind which aims to study the characteristics of microbial consortium inhabiting one of the natural high background radiation areas of the world, Chavara Coast in Kerala, India. The composition of the microbial community and their structural changes were evaluated under the natural circumstances with exorbitant presence of radionuclides in the sediments and after the radionuclide's recession due to mining effects. For this purpose, the concentration of radionuclides, heavy metals, net radioactivity estimation via gross alpha and beta emitters and other physiochemical characteristics were assessed in the sediments throughout the estuarine stretch. According to the results, the radionuclides had a significant effect in shaping the community structure and composition, as confirmed by the bacterial heterogeneity achieved between the samples. The results indicate that high radioactivity in the background environment reduced the abundance and growth of normal microbial fauna and favoured only the growth of certain extremophiles belonging to families of Piscirickettsiacea, Rhodobacteriacea and Thermodesulfovibrionaceae, which were able to tolerate and adapt towards the ionizing radiation present in the environment. In contrast, communities from Comamondacea, Sphingomonadacea, Moraxellacea and Erythrobacteracea were present in the sediments collected from industrial outlet, reinforcing the potent role of radionuclides in governing the community pattern of microbes present in the natural environment. Plastic pollution is pervasive, as it has infiltrated every corner of the planet and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a depletion in the production, consumption, and disposal of plastics. To find out the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, a comparative assessment of microplastics (MPs) observed before and after the pandemic was evaluated in surface water and sediment from the major rivers of Goa, i.e. Mandovi and Zuari. To comprehend the relative difference in the abundance, characteristics, and source of MPs, samples were examined in both the dry and wet seasons. We found a sharp decrease in the concentration of MPs immediately after the isolated pandemic. During the dry and wet seasons, two to seven times less concentration of MPs was recorded for water and sediments after the pandemic period compared to the prior pandemic. MPs size, >300 μm were relatively abundant after the pandemic period in contrast to the prior pandemic (<300 μm sized MPs were more). Polyamide (PA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were the dominant polymers after the pandemic whereas earlier the dominant polymers were polyacetylene, polyacrylamide (PAM), and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The risk assessment of MPs in sediments (Polymer load index) was higher prior to the pandemic. The water quality parameters also indicated an improvement in the water quality during the pandemic. The present study clearly exhibited that due to the reduction of overall anthropogenic activities during the COVID-19 pandemic period, a sharp decline of plastic waste and MP abundance in the coastal water body in Goa, west coast of India was found. Background: Frequent natural disasters like floods pose a major threat to India, with significant implications for public health. Low birth weight (LBW) is a critical global health concern, contributing to neonatal mortality. However, the association between floods and LBW remains underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the association between flood hazards and LBW in India using a geospatial approach. By analyzing data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) and flood zonation maps, the study aims to uncover the spatial dynamics of this association, offering insights into the implications of floods on birth weight across diverse geographical regions., Methods: The study used the fifth round of NFHS data, 2019-21, which involved 202,194 children selected through a multi-stage stratified sampling technique. The Vulnerability Atlas of India 2019 maps were also utilized to classify areas as flood or non-flood zones. Birth weight data from the NFHS-5 were categorized into three groups: very low, low, and normal birth weight (VLBW, LBW and NBW). Control variables including flood exposure, socio-demographic attributes, and geographic region were considered. Bivariate analysis and multinomial logistic regression were employed for statistical analysis. The spatial analysis involved Moran's I statistics and Geographically Weighted Regression to explore spatial dynamics of the association between floods and birth weight in India., Results: Floods predominantly affect India's lower Himalayan belts and western coastal regions. Flood-affected areas show higher proportions of VLBW and LBW infants. Groundwater usage and unimproved sanitation are associated with higher risk of VLBW and LBW. Sex, wealth, maternal education, residence type, and geographic region significantly influence birth weights. Multinomial logistic regression reveals 8 % and 27 % higher risks for LBW and VLBW in flood-affected regions. LISA cluster maps identify high-risk areas for both LBW and floods. Geographically Weighted Regression highlights 52 % of the variability in LBW occurrences can be attributed to the influence of flood hazards. Families hailing from the poorest wealth background and exposed to flood hazards bear a 5 % heightened likelihood of delivering LBW infants, in stark contrast to their counterparts from the same economic background yet unaffected by floods., Conclusions: The significant association between floods and LBW underscores the importance of robust disaster preparedness and public health strategies. For more than a decade, Chennai city in southern India has been evidenced with informal electronic waste (e-waste) recycling and open burning practices as the potential sources for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs can bioaccumulate in livestock particularly cows grazing on the contaminated soil. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to additional challenges associated with waste management practices. Hence this study aims to elucidate twenty-five PCB congeners in bovine milk from the previously reported PCB source regions in Chennai and the suburbs before and after about three years of the pandemic outbreak along electronic waste recycling (EWR), open burning dumps (OBD), and residential (RES) transects. The geomean concentration of Ʃ 25 PCBs in ng/g lipid weight (lw) followed a decreasing trend of EWR (13 ng/g lw) > OBD (8 ng/g lw) > RES (4 ng/g lw). Over 80 % of PCBs stemmed from EWR and OBD transects before and after the pandemic. However, a significant surge in the level of PCB-52 was observed in the OBD transect after the pandemic outbreak. Most toxic PCB congeners, PCB-126 and -169 were significant contributors to TEQs in EWR and OBD transects and can be reasoned with the burning of waste materials and mixed plastics in these transects. The highest average daily dose (ADD) exposure risk was for children from EWR and was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than other transects. Mean ADD-induced TEQ (6.6 pg TEQ/kg-bw/day) from the cows grazing around Kodungaiyur dumpsite slightly exceeded the EU guideline of 5.5 pg TEQ/kg-bw/day after the outbreak of the pandemic due to PCB-126. However, none of the samples exceeded the US FDA (1.5μg/g milk fat) recommendation limits for PCBs in milk fat. Backgrounds: Household polluting cooking fuels, as an important changeable behavior, are related to various detrimental health effects among the elderly. There is limited research on the association between polluting cooking fuel use and intrinsic capacity (IC) as an indicator of healthy aging. This study aimed to evaluate the above-mentioned association in India and China, where polluting cooking fuel use is common., Methods: We enrolled 33,803 participants aged ≥60 years from two nationally representative studies: the Longitudinal Aging Study in India and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Polluting cooking fuel use was defined as a self-report of using wood, coal, kerosene, crop residue, or dung. IC was measured by five aspects, including locomotion, cognition, vitality, sensory, and psychological capacity. The random-effects mixed linear regression and logistic regression with population weighting were performed. Multivariable-adjusted model and propensity score were used to adjust for potential confounders., Results: A total of 47.54 % and 59.32 % of elderly adults reported primary cooking using polluting fuels in India and China, respectively. Using polluting cooking fuels was consistently associated with IC decline; particularly, cognitive capacity was the most susceptible domain. In India, participants using polluting fuels had a 1.062 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.047-1.078) times risk for IC deficits, whereas more prominent results were observed in China (odds ratio [OR]: 2.040, 95 % CI: 1.642-2.533). Such harmful effects might be alleviated by transferring from polluting to clean fuels. Groundwater is the second largest water source for daily consumption, only next to surface water resources. Groundwater has been extensively investigated for its pollution level in urban areas. The groundwater quality assessments in industrial areas associated with every urban landscape are still lacking. In order to examine the spatial distribution characteristics, pollution levels, and sources of trace metals in the densely populated Chennai coastal region of Tamilnadu, India, physicochemical parameters and trace element concentrations have been determined in groundwater. 55 groundwater samples from Tamil Nadu's coastal region were collected and analyzed for physicochemical parameters such as pH, (EC), (TDS), and (TH) during the pre-monsoon (June 2015) and post-monsoon (January 2016) seasons. We used trace elements and analyzed them in this study (Mg, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, and Fe). Furthermore, anthropogenic input from industries and power plants exacerbates the pollution of Ni, Mg, Fe, and Mn. Due to evaporites and anthropogenic input, samples with excessive salinity, total hardness, and water quality are considered unsuitable for irrigation or drinking. Nuapada is one of the most drought-affected and fluoride-contaminated districts in Odisha, India. The presence of various dissolved substances, evapotranspiration, and lowering water table during pre- and post-monsoon (PRM and POM) seasons are responsible for declining groundwater (GW) quality over the Nuapada region. To comprehend the contaminated GW zones over the Nuapada and Komna blocks of the northern Nuapada district during the seasons, integration of hydrogeochemistry and statistical approaches using GW sample data on a geospatial platform have been done. The analysis exhibits that the major source of groundwater contamination is mostly geogenic with little anthropogenic impact. The cumulative impact of fluoride (F - ), iron (Fe 2+ ), and nitrate (NO₃ - ) contents are noticed in great-depth zones of the water table in the north and south parts of Nuapada and Komna blocks, respectively. The dominant hydro facies, such as Na-Cl (41.77%) and Ca-Cl (25.31%) types exist over both blocks during PRM and POM seasons, respectively. Demarcation of contaminant and susceptible zones over the study area using geospatial analysis and groundwater quality indices (GWQI) were done. About 3% of the total area, in the north and middle parts of the Nuapada and Komna blocks, falls under contamination zones and is unfit for drinking purposes, and about 35% of the region is susceptible to future contamination. Groundwater, a vital global resource, is essential for sustaining life and various human activities. However, its quality and availability face increasing threats from both natural and human-induced factors. Widespread contamination, arising from both natural origins and human activities such as agriculture, industry, mining, improper waste disposal, and wastewater release, poses significant risks to human health and water security. India, known for its dense population and pronounced groundwater challenges, serves as a prominent case study. Notably, in most of its regions, groundwater resources have been found to be severely contaminated by various chemical, biological, and radioactive contaminants. This review presents an examination of contamination disparities across various states of semi-arid and cold regions, encompassing diverse assessment methods. The studies conducted in semi-arid regions of North, South, West, and East India highlight the consistent presence of fluorides and nitrates majorly, as well as heavy metals in some areas, with values exceeding the permissible limits recommended by both the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the World Health Organization (WHO). These contaminants pose skeletal and dental threats, methemoglobinemia, and even cancer. Similarly, in cold regions, nitrate exposure and pesticide residues, reportedly exceeding BIS and WHO parameters, pose gastrointestinal and other waterborne health concerns. The findings also indicated that the recommended limits of several quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, and total alkalinity majorly surpassed. Obstetric anaesthesiologists play a pivotal role as peripartum physicians steering the team of obstetric healthcare providers towards a continuum of medical education, enhanced training and safer patient care. However, in resource-limited countries, deficiency of human resources and hence services available poses challenges to those attempting to reduce maternal mortality rates. Measures to fill the gap include creating a cadre of uniformly well-trained and certified non-physician anaesthesia providers (NPAPs) supervised by a physician obstetric anaesthesiologist and well-equipped rural and urban health care facilities. The Association of Obstetric Anaesthesiologists of India needs to upscale their outreach programs with regular knowledge updates and practical skill training to the NPAPs, medical graduates and postgraduate doctors in these regions. Several energy-related strategies and scenarios have been suggested to address concerns about rising global temperatures. In addition to using renewable energy, the improvement in energy efficiency of conventional systems is also in focus. Policies are already in place in many countries, including India, to address the energy needs of rural and small-scale enterprises by gasifying locally available, diverse agricultural leftovers. Although rice husk and groundnut shell are two commonly used agricultural leftovers in the southern part of India, their appropriate blending must be studied to improve their conversion efficiency in co-gasification. Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to construct a statistical model utilizing response surface methodology (RSM) to analyze the thermochemical co-gasification of the aforementioned biomass materials. Since RSM can predict optimum performance with limited experimental data, this could contribute to the identification of the performance and operating parameters of an open-core gasifier. The model predicts that the mixture containing 20% rice husk and working at an ER of 0.25 and a reduction zone inlet temperature of 879.9 °C will be CO-23.53%, H 2 -13.97%, and CH 4 -3.56%. In addition, the lower heating value and gas yield can be as high as 6.17 MJ/Nm 3 and 2.369 m 3 /kg, respectively. This outcome can contribute to the effective utilization of biomass for energy supply in rural areas. This study documents unique opportunities and challenges associated with engaging school children in Sustainable lifestyle for health., Objective: To identify opportunities and challenges in engaging school children in Sustainable Lifestyle., Methods: Participatory action research was designed through "Sustainable lifestyle Campaign" for 134 students (11-14 years) of 8 schools in Kolar city, Karnataka, India. The project was divided into Induction, Interaction and Reinforcement phases. Induction phase included Inter-school competitions (on themes of climate change and health). In Interaction phase, participants individually named various impacts of climate change and the climate change risk they perceived. In groups of 6-8, they then Free Listed and Pile sorted Climate change actions. In Reinforcement phase, interactive games and symposium on Climate Change and Sustainable Lifestyle were organized for the participants. Currently used pesticides (CUPs) were introduced to have lower persistence and bioaccumulation, and lesser bioavailability towards non-target species. Nevertheless, CUPs still represent a concern for both human health and the environment. India is an important agricultural country experiencing a conversion from the use of obsolete organochlorine pesticides to a newer generation of phytosanitary products. As for other developing countries, very little is known about the transfer of CUPs to the human diet in India, where systematic monitoring is not in place. In this study, we analyzed ninety four CUPs and detected thirty CUPs in several food products belonging to five types: cereals and pulses, vegetables, fruits, animal-based foods, and water. Samples were taken from markets in Delhi (aggregating food produced all over India) and in the periurban area of Dehradun (northern India) (representing food produced locally and through more traditional practices). Overall, chlorpyrifos and chlorpropham were the most detected CUPs with a detection frequency of 33% and 25%, respectively. Except for vegetables and fruits, the levels of CUPs in all other food types were significantly higher in samples from Delhi (p < 0.05). Exposure dosage of CUPs through different food matrices was calculated, and chlorpropham detected in potatoes had the maximum exposure dosage to humans (2.46 × 10 -6  mg/kg/day). Satellite imagery has emerged as the predominant method for performing spatial and temporal water quality analyses on a global scale. This study employs remote sensing techniques to monitor the water quality of the Bisalpur wetland during both the pre and post-monsoon seasons in 2013 and 2022. The study aims to investigate the prospective use of Landsat-8 (L8) and Landsat-9 (L9) data acquired from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) for the temporal monitoring of turbidity. Concurrently, the study examines the relationship of turbidity with water surface temperature (WST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations. We utilized visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands to conduct a single-band spectral response analysis of wetland turbidity. The results reveal a notable increase in turbidity concentration in May 2022, as this timeframe recorded the highest reflectance (0.28) in the NIR band. Additionally, the normalized difference turbidity index (NDTI) formula was used to assess the overall turbidity levels in the wetland. The results indicated that the highest concentration was observed in May 2013, with a value of 0.37, while the second-highest concentration was recorded in May 2022, with a value of 0.25. The WST was calculated using thermal band-10 in conjunction with Chlorophyll-a, utilizing the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI). The regression analysis shows a positive correlation between turbidity and WST, as indicated by R2 values of 0.41 in May 2013 and 0.40 in May 2022. Furthermore, a robust positive relationship exists between turbidity and Chl-a, with a high R2 value of 0.71 in May 2022. These findings emphasize the efficacy of the L8 and L9 datasets for conducting temporal analyses of wetland turbidity, WST, and Chl-a. Attributional life cycle assessment study examines the environmental impact of raw materials, machinery, and unit operations. In the present work, an attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to assess the environmental and greenhouse gas impacts of a shrimp feed production system. A commercial shrimp feed mill in Tamil Nadu, India, provided inventory data for one-ton shrimp feed (functional unit) for a Cradle-to-Gate evaluation using environmental impact methodologies, specifically Impact 2002+ in SimaPro® (V9.3.0.3) software. The results showed that human health (0.003357 DALY), ecosystem quality (2720.518 PDF × m 2  × yr), climate change (2031.696 kg CO 2 eq), and resources (71019.42 MJ primary) were the most significantly impacted. The human health category was found to be the most prominent after normalization and weighting (0.47 pt), and strategies were suggested accordingly. The GWP20 and GWP100 measures for long-term climate change were calculated to be 8.7 and 7.33 kg CO 2 eq, respectively. Cast iron used in machinery production (GWP 20-15.40%, GWP100-134.5%) and electricity use (GWP 20-6.13%, GWP 100-6.9%) accounted for sizable portions of the burden. Feed production is estimated to contribute 0.2% of global CO 2 emissions within the proposed global context. Ground-level ozone (O 3 ) concentration is rising in Asia, which accommodates the world's top-two wheat producers (China and India). Because wheat is among the species of high O 3 sensitivity, yield loss due to rising O 3 in Asia is a major threat to global wheat supply. We estimated the relationships between O 3 dose on AOT40 (accumulated daytime O 3 concentrations above 40 ppb for 90 days) and relative wheat yield for four wheat producing regions: China, India, Europe and North America using results of O 3 elevation experiments conducted therein. When compared on the same AOT40, the estimated yield loss was greatest in China followed by India, Europe, and North America in this order. In China, Europe and North America, the yield loss was primarily due to the reduction of single grain weight, whereas in India reduction of the number of grains contributed more to the yield loss than single grain weight. The greater response of the number of grains to O 3 in India can be explained by the earlier start of O 3 elevation, but the seasonal change in O 3 concentrations cannot explain the lower yield loss in North America than China and India. Referring to the past reports of lower yield sensitivity to O 3 in older cultivars, we compared the year of release of cultivars between the regions. In North America, they used cultivars released in 1980s or earlier, whereas in China they used cultivars released in 2000s. In Europe and India, most cultivars were released between those in North America and China. The difference in cultivars could therefore be a cause the differential yield response among the regions. The anadromous Hilsa, often known as the "Queen of Fishes" (Tenualosa ilisha), is the most valuable fishery in the Ganga-Hooghly delta estuary. Although BPA exposure has been shown to be harmful to aquatic organisms, no research has looked at the effects of BPA on the commercially valuable Hilsa shad of river Ganga. To close this information vacuum, we examined BPA levels in Hilsa fish from the Ganga estuary. Liver, muscle, kidney, and gonads were all positive for BPA among the Hilsa fish of all ages. Liver BPA levels were highest in adult males (272.16 ± 0.38 ng/g-dw), and lowest in juveniles (5.46 ± 0.06 ng/g-dw). BPA concentrations in the Hilsa shad muscle were highest in reproductively mature females (196.23 ± 0.41 ng/g-dw). The study also discovered a correlation between fish development and BPA exposure, with higher levels of BPA being identified in adult Hilsa species. This is the first study to look at the impact of BPA pollution on aquatic ecosystems and fisheries, and it showed that Hilsa shad is contaminated with BPA and poses health hazards to human beings. Operational research (OR) plays a pivotal role in the management and improvement of national tuberculosis (TB) programs in India. This article underscores the indispensable value of OR in optimizing resource allocation, enhancing treatment protocols, improving diagnostics, ensuring patient adherence, monitoring program performance, and informing policy decisions. However, it is vital to address existing gaps in the operational research mechanisms of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) in India to maximize its effectiveness. In conclusion, India's healthcare system can significantly benefit from the systematic implementation of operational research, especially in the context of TB control. To achieve this, India must continue to invest in research infrastructure, enhance research capacity among healthcare professionals, and promote collaboration among researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers. Background: Evidence suggests that hypothyroidism may be associated with an increased risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The data regarding the influence of hypothyroidism on cardiovascular disease in the Asian population is conflicting. Therefore, we undertook this study to assess the overall prevalence of hypothyroidism in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) patients and determine if there is a relationship between hypothyroidism, both sub-clinical and overt and other significant risk factors of ACS in an Indian population., Methods: We studied 487 hospitalized patients between March 2018 and February 2021 with a diagnosis of ACS to determine the prevalence of hypothyroidism, both clinical and sub-clinical and their relationship with other known coronary risk factors. Thyroid function Tests - free T3, free T4 and TSH were collected from all the patients within 24 h of their admission to the coronary care unit (CCU) of 2 major hospitals in New Delhi and Imphal (Manipur)., Results: Subclinical hypothyroidism was prevalent in 44 (9 %), followed by overt hypothyroidism in 25 (5.2 %). Subclinical hypothyroidism was more common in females, whereas overt hypothyroidism was more common in males. ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) (52 %), followed by Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) (25 %), was the commonest diagnosis at presentation. Patients with overt hypothyroidism showed a higher proportion of increased triglyceride levels. Patients with hypothyroidism had no differences in the prevalence of concomitant diabetes hypertension and other coronary risk factors., Conclusions: Patients with ACS without known thyroid disorders should be screened for hypothyroidism since it is found frequently. Coastal ecosystems such as seagrass, mangroves and saltmarshes sequester and store large quantities of carbon in the soil. Carbon sequestration potential of four seagrass species Halophila ovalis, Halodule pinifolia, Syringodium isoetifolium and Halodule uninervis in Pulicat Lake, Andhra Pradesh, India was assessed. The mean seagrass biomass within the seagrass beds in the lake ranged from 1.43 ± 0.06 to 2.01 ± 0.12 Mg/ ha and the total blue carbon storage in the seagrass meadows ranged from 0.49 ± 0.15 to 9.52 ± 0.15 Mg C ha -1 while stored carbon in the sediment ranged from 1.29 ± 0.04 to 11.94 ± 0.15 Mg C ha -1 . Regression analysis showed a considerable correlation between seagrass carbon and sediment carbon. Among the environmental parameters analyzed, pH showed significant correlation with seagrass biomass and sediment carbon (P < 0.05). Cancer is a life-threatening malignancy and one of the leading global causes of human mortality. New approaches are required for cancer therapy due to the unique properties of cancer cells and the side effects of chemotherapy. Probiotics have gained significant attention in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including cancer. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the anti-cancer effects of probiotics, such as marine Lactobacillus species and their proteins. Five marine Lactobacillus species were isolated and identified from the Tamil Nadu Mangrove Pichavaram (TLMP) forest and named TLMP1, TLMP2, TLMP3, TLMP4, and TLMP5. The Lactobacillus isolates, and their proteins were administered to male golden Syrian hamsters. Tumor formation was effectively controlled in hamsters treated with crude Lactobacillus, extending their lifespan. Additionally, Lactobacillus proteins demonstrated an inhibitory effect on tumor formation in the treated group compared to the control. Molecular docking analysis revealed that Lactobacillus proteins interacted significantly with the cAMP-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit alpha. Introduction: There is insufficient information on the angiographic characteristics of individuals with rheumatic valvular heart disease (VHD) from eastern India. The objective of this research is to gather important data in this area to aid the best surgical outcomes for patients with rheumatic VHD., Materials and Methods: 978 consecutive patients with rheumatic VHD, scheduled for surgical intervention, were recruited., Result and Conclusion: Mitral valve involvement was observed in 66.1 %, aortic valve in 7.3 % and both valves in 26.6 %. Patients with CAD had significantly higher proportions of severe aortic stenosis (AS). Present study analyzed the seasonal and spatial distribution patterns, sources, and ecological risks of seven heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the sediments of River Ganges, finding that the majority of concentrations were lithologic, except for Cd, which was significantly higher than background standards. Elevated values of geochemical indices viz. I geo , CF, RI, C d , mC d , HQ, mHQ, and P N suggest moderate to high ecological risk in the benthic environment and its organisms due to the synergistic effect of heavy metals. The PEC-Q metals revealed 8-10 % toxicity in the upstream and downstream sites, due to the influence of agricultural activities. Multivariate statistical techniques (PCM and PCA) indicated that Cd and Pb predominantly originated from anthropogenic sources, while other metals primarily derived from geological background. To evaluate the exposure risk and ingestion of microplastics by migratory shorebirds, which are regarded as apex predators in the coastal ecosystem, this study investigated the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in estuarine and coastal habitats and their potential to be transferred in the food chains. We analysed the presence of microplastics in water, sediment, major macroinvertebrate prey and the guano samples of ten shorebird species from ten important wintering grounds in the west coast of India. Our results revealed that water is the primary source through which microplastics disseminate into various ecosystem components. Microplastic debris in various forms were reported in all samples analysed, with microfibres being the most abundant form. While polyethylene and polypropylene were found as the major microplastic types in water, sediment, and prey samples, polystyrene was most abundant in guano samples.
