Natural estrogen conjugates play important roles in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), but their deconjugation potentials are poorly understood. This work is the first to investigate the relationships between the enzyme activities of arylsulfatase/β-glucuronidase and deconjugation potentials of natural estrogen conjugates. This work led to three important findings. First, the enzyme activity of β-glucuronidase in sewage is far higher than that of arylsulfatase, while their corresponding activities in activated sludge were similar. Second, a model based on β-glucuronidase could successfully predict the deconjugation potentials of natural estrogen glucuronide conjugates in sewage. Third, the enzyme activity of arylsulfatase in sewage was too low to lead to evident deconjugation of sulfate conjugates, which means that the deconjugation rate of estrogen sulfates can be regarded as zero. By comparing their theoretical removal based on enzyme activity and on-site investigation, it is reasonable to conclude that reverse deconjugation of estrogen conjugates (i.e., conjugation of natural estrogens to form conjugated estrogens) likely exist in WWTP, which explains well why natural estrogen conjugates cannot be effectively removed in WWTP. Meanwhile, this work provides new insights how to improve the removal performance of WWTP on natural estrogen conjugates. Dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) is an emerging disinfection by-product (DBP) that is widespread in drinking water. However, the pathway for DCAN formation from aromatic amino acids remains unclear, leading to a lack of an understanding of its explicit fate during chloramination. In this study, we investigated the specific formation mechanism of DCAN during the chloramination of phenylalanine based on reaction kinetics and chemical thermodynamics. The reason for differences between aldehyde and decarboxylation pathways was explained, and kinetic parameters of the pathways were obtained through quantum chemistry calculations. The results showed that the reaction rate constant of the rate-limiting step of the aldehyde pathway with 1.9 × 10 -11  s -1 was significantly higher than that of decarboxylation (3.6 × 10 -16  s -1  M -1 ), suggesting that the aldehyde pathway is the main reaction pathway for DCAN formation during the chloramination of phenylalanine to produce DCAN. Subsequently, theoretical calculations were performed to elucidate the effect of pH on the formation mechanism, which aligned well with the experimental results. Dehydrohalogenation was found to be the rate-limiting step under acidic conditions with reaction rate constants higher than those of the rate-limiting step (expulsion of amines) under neutral conditions, increasing the rate of DCAN formation. The effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on bacterial regrowth in water after disinfection using ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (UV LEDs ) is still unclear. Herein, the regrowth and responses of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Bacillus cereus were investigated after being exposed to UV LEDs at combined wavelengths (265 and 280 nm) in a phosphate-buffered saline consisting of Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) and Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA). Low-molecular-weight (MW) organic compounds, which may form into intermediary photoproducts, and indicate bacterial repair metabolism, were characterized through non-target screening using orbitrap mass spectrometry. This study demonstrates the ability of the UV LEDs -inactivated cells to regrow. After UV exposure, a considerable upregulation of RecA was observed in two strains. With increasing the incubation time, the expression levels of RecA in V. parahaemolyticus increased, which may be attributed to the dark repair mechanism. Coexisting anionic DOM affects both the disinfection and bacterial regrowth processes. The time required for bacterial regrowth after UV exposure reflects the time needed for the individual cells to reactivate, and it differs in the presence or absence of DOM. In the presence of DOM, the cells were less damaged and required less time to grow. The UV LEDs exposure results in the occurrence of low-MW organic compounds, including carnitine or acryl-carnitine with N-acetylmuramic acid, which are associated with bacterial repair metabolism. Overall, the results of this study expand the understanding of the effects of water matrices on bacterial health risks. The pervasive presence of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in diverse products has led to their introduction into wastewater systems, making wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) significant PFAS contributors to the environment. Despite WWTPs' efforts to mitigate PFAS impact through physicochemical and biological means, concerns persist regarding PFAS retention in generated biosolids. While numerous review studies have explored the fate of these compounds within WWTPs, no study has critically reviewed their presence, transformation mechanisms, and partitioning within the sludge. Therefore, the current study has been specifically designed to investigate these aspects. Studies show variations in PFAS concentrations across WWTPs, highlighting the importance of aqueous-to-solid partitioning, with sludge from PFOS and PFOA-rich wastewater showing higher concentrations. Research suggests biological mechanisms such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenase, transamine metabolism, and beta-oxidation are involved in PFAS biotransformation, though the effects of precursor changes require further study. Carbon chain length significantly affects PFAS partitioning, with longer chains leading to greater adsorption in sludge. The wastewater's organic and inorganic content is crucial for PFAS adsorption; for instance, higher sludge protein content and divalent cations like calcium and magnesium promote adsorption, while monovalent cations like sodium impede it. In conclusion, these discoveries shed light on the complex interactions among factors affecting PFAS behavior in biosolids. Catalytic ozonation using faujasite-type Y zeolite with two different SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 molar ratios (60 and 12) was evaluated for the first time in the removal of 25 pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) present in real effluents from two municipal wastewater treatment plants both located in the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Additionally, control experiments including adsorption and direct ozonation, were conducted to better understand the fundamental aspects of the different individual systems in wastewater samples. Commercial zeolites were used in sodium form (NaY). The results showed that the simultaneous use of ozone and NaY zeolites significantly improved the micropollutants degradation rate, able to degrade 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs within the early 9 min using the zeolite NaY-12 (24.4 mg O 3 L -1 consumed), while 12 min of reaction with the zeolite NaY-60 (31 mg O 3 L -1 consumed). In the case of individual experiments, ozonation removed 95 % of the total mixture of PhCs after 25 min (46.2 mg O 3 L -1 consumed), while the direct adsorption, after 60 min of contact time, eliminated 30 % and 44 % using the NaY-12 and NaY-60 zeolites, respectively. Results showed that the Brønsted acid sites seemed to play an important role in the effectiveness of the treatment with ozone. Finally, the environmental assessment showed that the total risk quotients of pharmaceuticals were reduced between 87 %-99 % after ozonation in the presence of NaY-60 and NaY-12 zeolites. In this study, the porous carbon material (FeN-BC) with ultra-high catalytic activity was obtained from waste biomass through Fe-N co-doping. The prominent degradation rate (> 96.8%) of naproxen (NAP) was achieved over a wide pH range (pH 3.0-9.0) in FeN-BC/PAA system. Unlike previously reported iron-based peracetic acid (PAA) systems with • OH or RO • as the dominated reactive species, the degradation of contaminants was attributed to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) produced by organic radicals (RO • ) decomposition, which was proved to be thermodynamically feasible and favorable by theoretical calculations. Combining the theoretical calculations, characteristic and experimental analysis, the synergistic effects of Fe and N were proposed and summarized as follows: i) promoted the formation of extensive defects and Fe 0 species that facilitated electron transfer between FeN-BC and PAA and continuous Fe(II) generation; ii) modified the specific surface area (SSA) and the isoelectric point of FeN-BC in favor of PAA adsorption on the catalyst surface. In this study, multilayer self-assembled multifunctional bamboo shoot shell biochar microspheres (BSSBM) were prepared, in which bamboo shoot shell biochar was used as the carrier, titanium dioxide as the intermediate medium, and chitosan as the adhesion layer. The adsorption behavior of BSSBM on heavy metals Ag(I) and Pd(II), antibiotics, and dye wastewater was systematically analyzed. BSSBM shows a wide range of adsorption capacity. BSSBM is a promising candidate for the purification of real polluted water, not only for metal ions, but also for Tetracycline (TC) and Methylene Blue (MB). The maximum adsorption amounts of BSSBM on Pd(II), Ag(I), TC and MB were 417.3 mg/g, 222.5 mg/g, 97.2 mg/g and 42.9 mg/g, respectively.The adsorption of BSSBM on Pd(II), MB and TC conformed to the quasi-first kinetic model, and the adsorption on Ag(I) conformed to the quasi-second kinetic model. BSSBM showed remarkable selective adsorption capacity for Ag(I) and Pd(II) in a multi-ion coexistence system. BSSBM not only realized the high value-added utilization of waste, but also had the advantages of low cost, renewable and selective adsorption. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted wide attention due to their environmental impacts and health risks. PPCPs released through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are estimated to be 80 %. Nevertheless, the occurrence of PPCPs in the WWTPs equipped with Bacillus spec.-based bioreactors (BBR) treatment system remains unclear. In this study, sludge and waste water samples were collected during separate winter and summer sampling campaigns from a typical BBR treatment system. The results indicate that out of 58 target PPCPs, 27 compounds were detected in the waste water (0.06-1900 ng/L), and 23 were found in the sludge (0.6-7755 ng/g dw). Paraxanthine was the chemical of the highest abundance in the influent due to the high consumption of the parent compounds caffeine and theobromine. The profile for PPCPs in the wastewater and sludge exhibited no seasonal variation. Overall, the removal of target PPCPs in summer is more effective than the winter. In the BBR bio-reactor, it was found that selected PPCPs (at ng/L level) can be completely removed. The efficiency for individual PPCP removal was increased from 1.0 % to 50 % in this unit, after target specific adjustments of the process. The effective removal of selected PPCPs by the BBR treatment system is explained by combined sorption and biodegradation processing. The re-occurrence of PPCPs in the wastewater was monitored. Negative removal efficiency was explained by the cleavage of Phase II metabolites after the biotransformation process, and the lack of equilibrium for PPCPs in the sludge of the second clarifier. A compound specific risk quotient (RQ) was calculated and applied for studying the potential environmental risks. Drinking water disinfection can result in the formation disinfection byproducts (DBPs, > 700 have been identified to date), many of them are reportedly cytotoxic, genotoxic, or developmentally toxic. Analyzing the toxicity levels of these contaminants experimentally is challenging, however, a predictive model could rapidly and effectively assess their toxicity. In this study, machine learning models were developed to predict DBP cytotoxicity based on their chemical information and exposure experiments. The Random Forest model achieved the best performance (coefficient of determination of 0.62 and root mean square error of 0.63) among all the algorithms screened. Also, the results of a probabilistic model demonstrated reliable model predictions. According to the model interpretation, halogen atoms are the most prominent features for DBP cytotoxicity compared to other chemical substructures. The presence of iodine and bromine is associated with increased cytotoxicity levels, while the presence of chlorine is linked to a reduction in cytotoxicity levels. Other factors including chemical substructures (CC, N, CN, and 6-member ring), cell line, and exposure duration can significantly affect the cytotoxicity of DBPs. The similarity calculation indicated that the model has a large applicability domain and can provide reliable predictions for DBPs with unknown cytotoxicity. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of using of ozonation to remove antibiotics used, among others, in veterinary medicine, from the aqueous environment. The effect of this process on the degradation, mineralisation and ecotoxicity of aqueous solutions of ampicillin, doxycycline, tylosin, and sulfathiazole was investigated. Microbiological MARA® bioassay and two in silico methods were used for the ecotoxicity assessment. Ozonation was an effective method for the degradation of the antibiotics studied and the reduction in ecotoxicity of the solutions. However, after ozonation, the solutions contained large amounts of organic products, including compounds much less susceptible to ozonation than the initial antibiotics. Structures of 14, 12, 40 and 10 degradation products for ampicillin, doxycycline, tylosin, and sulfathiazole, respectively, were proposed. It was confirmed that ozone plays a greater role than hydroxyl radicals in the degradation of these antibiotics, with the exception of TYL. The use of ozonation to obtain a high degree of mineralisation is unfavourable and it is suggested to combine ozonation with biodegradation.
