Coupling of transients to aboveground transmission lines is analyzed and measured experimentally. Measurements were made using scale models approximately 1-foot high to represent power transmission lines. The coupling to the line and the propagation characteristics of the line were measured. The effects of bends and junctions on the transmitted signals were measured and analyzed. Periodically, grounded lines and multiconductor lines were also examined. The variation of the induced-voltage waveforms with soil conductivity, line height, and pulse width were calculated.

The possibility of achieving Category II performance at Buffalo Runway 23 is investigated in this report. Optimum antenna performance is obtained by compensation, increased coning and the evaluation of terrain effects for each antenna site. These techniques resulted in the probable attainment of Category II performance at Buffalo. (Author)

The study was conducted to lay the initial groundwork for a smooth and timely interface between the AIMIS (Advanced Integrated Modular Instrumentation System) and the AAES (Advanced Aircraft Electrical System). Primary failure modes of the SOSTEL (Solid State Electric Logic) system are identified. Level of criticality is indicated for each failure mode and priorities for display of malfunction information are established. Multimode switch approaches and interface memory requirements are discussed. Techniques are established for converting failure data into messages the pilot can immediately understand. A word code technique is recommended as a means for simplifying the SOSTEL/AIMIS interface and minimizing interface memory requirements. The A-7B power distribution and armament station control unit (ASCU) subsystems are used as the data base for the study.

A compatibility study and engineering test evaluation on solid state power controllers (SSPC) was conducted to provide documentation and technical information to the Air Force of the factors needed for the technical decision of compatibility of SSPC on the B-1 air vehicle. Part I of this report documents the Baseline, Analysis, Weight-Volume NA-72-229-1. The Supplement to the report contains a summary of a series of evaluation tests on Solid State Power Controllers. The tests were intended to verify operational characteristics of these devices in simulated B-1 environments and with simulated and actual B-1 loads.

Work performed on the Solar Collector Thermal Power System (SCTPS) Program from 16 August 1971 to 28 June 1974 is presented. Volume I contains the system analysis for a solar collector thermal power system supplying thermal energy to a Vuilleumier cooler that is carried on a BMS type satellite. The analysis covers specific requirements of individual components of the power system, including the solar collector, heat pipes, and the thermal energy storage system. The report covers the effort expended and performance achieved in the establishment of a production capability for a universally applicable switching component for use in precision power-conversion equipment. The universal application of the Integrated Power Switch (IPS) is assured by signal input requirements compatible with popular DTL or TTL logic, two separate power switch sections isolated by optical coupling from the input signals, internal protection from the most common equipment-failure modes, and a usable frequency range from continuous operation to 10 kHz.

A unique aircraft power distribution system concept has been recently developed. This power distribution system offers performance capabilities greatly in excess of present program objectives while maintaining competitive cost, weight, size, reliability, and simplicity. In this report basic elements of such a system and the various factors which would govern the selection of an actual operational configuration are described. This concept is called System for Aircrew Flight Extension and Return; the acronym 'SAFER' describes the principal objective. (Author)

The object of the invention is a three-phase synchronous generator on the type of machine with switchover of the magnetic flux and containing three stator packets arranged in a row along the shaft and carrying a concentrated armature winding and excitation winding and three loaded packets on the rotor arranged on the shaft with a spacial shift of 120 degrees one with relation to the other, and serving for switchover of the flux in the stator, which is distinguished by the fact that, for the purposes of economy of copper, the excitation winding is made up of three concentrated centered coils common to all three stator packets. The generator is distinguished by the use of permanent magnets with magnetic shunts arranged on areas of the stator embraced by the coils of the excitation winding. A study has been made of a new system developed to update and improve biological and chemical warfare decontamination equipment. An apparatus was required to meter, mix and disperse five specified solutions in water from separate storage tanks with the relative flow rates of the fluids to be maintained with considerable accuracy. The preliminary development of a unit is described. Fabrication of the unit was not pursued because its weight and cost were large enough to suggest that the five solution decontamination mixture must be further evaluated on a laboratory scale to completely justify the necessity of this equipment.

Repeated and catastrophic piston failures in a group of large diesel engines deployed in Vietnam for power generation purposes, revealed the urgent need for the development of a fast, reliable means for the detection of incipient failures in these engines. As a result of work subsequently performed by the ROICC-Pacific and various agencies and consultants under his direction, a very successful nondestructive testing technique was established. This technique utilized commercial ultrasonic instrumentation of the pulse-echo type. The procedure, as finalized, will unfailingly detect cracks in the major webs of the diesel engine pistons under consideration, and requires only the removal of the cylinder head for access to the piston top. The only major constraints in the application of this technique are the requirements that the piston material be homogeneous, detailed information relating to piston configuration be available, and the diagnosis be made by technical personnel experiences in ultrasonic interpretation.

The report describes a facility consisting mainly of a controller for charging and discharging electrical power sources. The facility also includes a data storage system and data reduction equipment. The controller has five modes of operation: Constant current and constant voltage charge, constant power and constant current discharge, and an open-circuit voltage period. Each mode has certain preset end points. A comparator monitors cell voltage continuously and can override the end points, causing a printout of ampere-hours, watt-hours, or time. All modes of operation and end points can be set up by diode pins in program boards, and the constant power, voltage, or current level is programmed by a clip-card reader. Twenty-five different modes and sixteen different levels can be preprogrammed in any sequence.

The power distribution system was evaluated and the lighting requirements were determined for the shelters used by the Atomic Ordnance Platoons. It was concluded that (1) the power distribution system is suitable for Marine Corps use by AOP's; (2) each AOP requires two complete power distribution systems; (3) the wiring harness is suitable for use by AOP's in the medium shelter; and (4) the wiring harness is considered flexible enough to meet the basic illumination requirements of the medium shelter for general use.

The results of this study show that the minimum requirements for installation, operation, and maintenance of shelter auxiliary power systems can generally be met with commericially available equipment now in common industrial use. To facilitate the use of the information in this report, the presentation of results is divided into ten sections. The document covers the technical feasibility of developing a very heavy aerial lift vehicle to be operational by 1990. The mission spectrum for such a vehicle was assumed similar to the proposed QMR for the heavy-lift helicopter except that the payload requirement was increased to approximately 50-60 tons. Shaft-driven and tip-driven helicopter concepts were given major consideration. Power-plant and transmission development and problems relating to subsystems, such as load handling and control, are treated. The generation of a high-intensity acoustic field which is a faithful replica, or at least a known function, of the input signal is a prime requirement in modern active sonar systems. Most sonar signals in use are modulated sine waves. Therefore, transducers must be capable of efficiently transforming this type of signal. It is evident that design criteria and test procedures based on steady-state sine-wave signals are not adequate. The potential gain in sonar performance to be realized by maximizing signal power without distortion merits increased effort addressed to this problem. This report is intended to point out some of the problems associated with the generation of maximum-energy acoustic fields by large multielement sources and to suggest techniques of analysis and testing. The use of electrical analog analysis of power-limiting factors in transducer elements appears to be an attractive method if a means can be developed for estimating the range of acoustic-loading values experienced by elements in an active array. A description of calibration procedures used and results obtained in tests of the ARTEMIS acoustic source are presented to serve as an example of proposed test methods.

The study compiled a band of power system data so that, given an electric power profile for any army vehicle, an optimum power system approach can be selected. The basis for the selection are four parameters; weight, volume, efficiency, and life cycle cost. The major power system components included in the study were a gas turbine, fuel for a 24 hour and a 48 hour mission, a generator, a voltage regulator, system controls, and protection. Three types of electric power were investigated; 28 volts d-c, 56 volts d-c and 115/200 volts, 3 phase, 400 Hz a-c. The study indicates that the type of electric power selected should be a function of what is best for the loads since fuel weight is quite large compared with the other components. Also, a method of determining life cycle cost for a vehicle electric power system is described.

This report describes the test equipment and test requirements for flight-proofing missile main power battery packs.

This report summarizes the theoretical and experimental studies conducted on a hot gas motor, a fundamentally new mechanism, as an energy conversion device. In the theoretical study, the relationship of the working components was determined and optimized for maximum conversion of fluid potential and kinetic energy into useful mechanical work. A test model of the hot gas motor was fabricated and a limited series of test runs was conducted, using both cold and hot gas. This report also presents a design discussion, a vector analysis, and test data of this novel motor.

The research described in this report covers several aspects of the fight to suppress the emission of spurious energy from high-power transmitters: waffle-iron filters to provide high reactive attenuation; harmonic pads to protect the transmitter and prevent arcing from harmonic resonance; leaky-wave filters to provide high dissipative attenuation; band-stop filters to provide high attenuation at particular frequencies; and wide-band bolometers to measure the combined power of many harmonic frequencies. The analytical investigation included the effect of filter bandwidth and filter type on the attenuation and group delay, and on the transient response to both rectangular and shaped pulses.

The report covers the background research, design, and development of a portable thermal power system intended for underwater use. The resulting power system develops 1 hp, operates in a diesel cycle, and uses the liquid monopropellant Otto Fuel, Composition II. By using combustion by-products as a recompression medium, the power system achieves a remote operating capability that would make it completely independent of surface support and, therefore, useful in many underwater applications, such as powering diver tools, submersibles, and weapons systems.
