The order in which cows choose to enter a milking parlour could have implications on the speed of throughput of cows. Preliminary field observation studies were made on three commercial herds which consisted of 56, 57 and 104 cows (mainly Friesian). During the period of observation 20–46% of the animals were replaced but it was shown that 80–85% of the cows entered the milking parlour mainly at random, but the other 15–20% of the cows consistently entered in the same approximate position in the milking order. As lactation proceeded the cows became more consistent in their order of entry. There was a slight tendency for higher yielding cows and those in early lactation to enter in the earlier stages of milking and a slight tendency for older cows to appear in the last half of the order.
