Men and horses working on a timber bridge construction site, probably in North-eastern Victoria. William John Howship (1874-1932) opened a photography studio business in Nunn Street Benalla in April 1904. He expanded the business by selling small format Kodak cameras and providing a 24 hour film processing service as well as the actual photography work, both studio and outdoor. The collection consists of 1250 dry plate glass negative images created by Howship between 1904 and 1931. Images include views of Benalla and surrounding districts, local events such as floods, concerts and military ceremonies and a large body of portrait work. The construction site of the University of Melbourne Chemistry Building in front of Old Wilson Hall, University of Melbourne, viewed from the north-west corner of Old Pathology and the Medical Library. Comments: Colin Sach was a laboratory manager in the Chemistry School, with an ongoing interest in the physical development of the University. He took many photographs of the campus and his department. His well documented images form the basis of this collection. Inscription: "P.2.7; N.6.1 Wilson Hall. Taken from the NW corner of Old Pathology and Med Library, taken after work on removing road and pitchers was commenced" is written in ink on the back of the photograph. Frank Lindbergh, Postmaster and Mayor of Crosby, Minnesota, stands in the middle of a construction site. He was a cousin to aviator Charles Lindbergh. Horses are pulling wagons of building materials. Other men are unidentified. On the back is a message to Ann from Uncle Frank.
