Abstract

Non-aqueous solvents for textile processing and finishing have become of increasing interest to the industry. Solvent finishing now seems likely to become commercially practical within a short time. This paper presents results of experimental applications of such finishes as stain repellent, durable press and flame retardant from a non-flammable solvent system. Also discussed are some of the advantages of solvent finishing in terms of pollution reduction, economic feasibility and versatility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Direct sulfonation of higher fatty acids with sulfur trioxide or chlorosulfonic acid, without use of solvent, is possible, but the product must then be isolated as the sodium salt. Use of a chlorinated solvent permits isolation of the α-sulfo acid. Sulfonation with dioxane sulfur trioxide in place of sulfur trioxide gave a nearly colorless α-sulfostearic acid.
