Beroza and co-workers have developed a method of identifying pesticides on the basis of p-values. This paper extends the use of p-values to quantitating the components of a two-component system which cannot be resolved on a given gas chromatographic column.

Proper interpretation of the time and frequency characteristics of machine noise provides information useful in identifying and quantifying noise sources in complex mechanisms. The use of commercial acoustic instrumentation led to the development of unique analog instrumentation for noise-time analysis and ultimately to a real-time analog-digital signal analysis capability. The hybrid system described in this paper provides the time and frequency resolution necessary for noise source identification and evaluation.

Cytogenetic studies have been performed to determine the effect of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) on mammalian chromosomes in vivo . An elevated level of chromosome breakage is present in mouse bone marrow cells within 12 h after oral or parenteral dosing with 200 mg/kg. Damage is most severe at 24 h after oral dosing and at 72 h following intraperitoneal injection. A dose-response curve was constructed using oral doses of 10 to 200 mg/kg. The no-effect dose level lies within the 10–25 mg/kg range when administered as a single dose. In subacute studies, positive results have been obtained with as little as 2.5 mg/kg/day administered orally for 5 days.

In agglutination experiments using antisera of human origin, the I, HI and H erythrocyte antigens were shown to be quite stable on red cells that had been collected as clotted blood and in ACD-B solution and maintained at 4°C for periods as long as 28 days. These blood group antigens were also well preserved on red cells that had been frozen at -150°C in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen and, after recovery from the frozen state, were maintained at 4°C in a dextrose-electrolyte solution for 7 days.

In direct agglutination experiments with the four antisera after they had been absorbed with rabbit, monkey, guinea pig, human group OI or human group Oi (cord) red cells, it was evident that the erythrocytes of rabbits possessed I, H, and HI but no i substances. Monkey red cells had i but no I, H, and HI blood group activity. Guinea pigs were shown to have I, H, and HI, antigens but the i-status of their erythrocytes remained equivocal. A new variant of blood group B characterized by a weak B antigen on the erythrocytes, anti-B present in the serum, and absence of B substance in saliva has been identified in four related individuals of Finnish descent. The condition appears to be inherited according to simple Mendelian principles. Weak B variants described by earlier investigators have been categorized into three groups on the basis of the serologic activity of their serum and the presence or absence of B substance in the saliva of secretors of H substance. This is believed to be the first report of a subgroup of B having anti-B in the serum but lacking B substance in saliva.

An example of anti-Fy3 has been found in an Fy(a — b—) Negro patient whose serum also contains separable anti-Fya. The serological reactions of the anti-Fy3 component duplicate those of the original serum, except that in this case Fy(a +) or Fy(b +) red blood cells from newborn infants are not agglutinated. Both of the antibodies appear to be an immune response to a single blood transfusion.

The erythrocytes and organs of rabbits, monkeys, and guinea pigs were examined for the presence of I, H, HI, and i blood group substances. The aqueous layers of butanol extracts of red cells and selected organs were analyzed by the inhibition of agglutination procedure using test cells and antisera of human origin. Rabbits and guinea pigs were shown to possess I, H, and HI substances on their erythrocytes and in other body tissues. Guinea pig red cells were found to have i substance, also. With the exception of i substance on erythrocytes and H substance in gastric mucosa, none of the extracts prepared of monkey red cells and tissues exhibited I, HI, or H blood group activity.

A critical step in mechanism noise reduction for data‐processing equipment is identification of sources. Techniques such as disabling mechanisms, microphone probing, and frequency analysis are useful here. We have discussed procedures based on noise‐time analysis within machine cycles at past Acoustical Society of America meetings as being particularly useful for this work. For high‐speed impacting machinery, normally used analog acoustical instruments are inadequate for noise‐time analysis. Procedures have been devised using a high‐speed electronic switch attenuator in a “stroboscopic” mode to overcome these limitations. This technique has been useful for source identification and examples are presented. Digital procedures have considerable potential for these applications. Fast Fourier transform digital filtering, and related techniques are useful and we have used these procedures where applicable in noise‐time analysis using an IBM 1130 computer system. The practical limit here is in processing time and/or computer size (and cost). Our present direction is combining the best of both digital and analog techniques in a hybrid system. The resulting approaches will be discussed as more nearly optimum than other approaches and most usable for mechanism noise identification.
