Showa 5 [ 1930]., "Eight colour pictorial maps on a single long folding sheet presented in colour pictorial light card covers, black and white photographic illustrations with extensive text on reverse, 21 × 178cm. Light browning and soiling and wear covers. A very good copy. This remarkably illustrated collection of pictorial maps was presented as an addendum to the August 1930 edition of "Shufu no Tomo" (Housewives' Friends) magazine, a very popular women's magazine of the time. The maps are impressively rendered on an exceptionally long sheet measuring 153cm in width. The approach of acclaimed artist/cartographer Yoshida Hatsusaburo (1884-1955) of encapsulating diverse topographical features within two-dimensional panoramas is truly distinctive. This compilation boasts eight panoramic scenes, including depictions of Nikko, Hokkaido, Nagano, and Kyushu, all brought to life with vivid hues. Taisho 16 [ 1927]., " A vibrant colour bird's-eye view pictorial map, 26 x 104cm, concertina style with multiple folds, text and illustrations on reverse printed in light brown ink, chipped at two corners and in a few small places on margins not affecting the image, wear along folds with some repaired with archival washi, some light browning but still overall a handsome, detailed map in good condition. This wonderful lithographed bird's eye view was published as a New Year's supplement to the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun for the year of Taisho 16 (1927). However, due to the death of Taisho Emperor on 25 December 1926, the new era of Showa started on 26 December. As a result, there was never the 16th year of Taisho. While the geography of the island of Honshu seems relatively accurate, by some magic, the map artist, Yoshida Hatsusaburo, managed to fit in not only Hokkaido, but also Hawaii and San Francisco in the far upper right corner! At upper left corner, Shanghai and Taiwan are marked in the distance. Yoshida was a renowned and popular bird's-eye map illustrator. His reputation was heightened after Crown Prince Hirohito (later Showa Emperor) used and praised Yoshida's map during his visit to Kyoto. His techniques of depicting landscape and deforming perspective are very well known. The verso has text with a guide to excursions in the Kinki - Tokai region including train information, with an advertisement for cosmetics with instructions for the correct application of makeup from before to after! Extensive Japanese washi repairs to some folds but mainly to edges and mostly on the reverse. A few folds with slight loss, nevertheless a very attractive panorama. This fascinating bird's-eye view pictorial map of Kyushu was produced by Yoshida Hatsusaburo (1886-1955), who was a renowned pictorial map illustrator. He produced more than 3000 bird's-eye maps in his career. He became famous after Crown Prince Hirohito (later Showa Emperor) used Yoshida's pictorial map during his visit to Kyoto, and praised it highly. As tourism became more popular in Japan in the early 20th century, Yoshida was commissioned to draw those bird's-eye maps on various areas and cities. Yoshida's artistic technique introduced quite drastic deformation so that various far-away sites could be included in one map. This map of Kyushu engages the above technique. The map covers the whole Kyushu Island. Major cities and landmarks are all included here from Nagasaki to Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima. In addition, in the distance, you can see Korea, Dalian and even Shanghai! This pictorial map was originally going to be published as a new year issue supplement for Osaka Mainichi Newspaper in 1927. However, with the death of Taisho Emperor on 25 December 1926, a new era of Showa started and 1927 became the 2nd year of Showa. Thus, the newspaper company had to reprint the map with new dates, namely Showa 2. Yet, this particular map retains the original publishing date of 1 January in Taisho 16. The map was probably owned by a Westerner whose writing in English appears along the upper margin of the map and on cover. Inside of covers two black and white photographic images show two women in European dress teeing off and a view across a golf course of men playing. Card covers a little worn with occasional spotting otherwise very good. This exquisite bird's-eye view map of Hoshigaura (Xinghai Park) from 1927 was skillfully illustrated by Yoshida Hatsusaburo, a renowned artist known for his captivating bird's-eye maps. The area, which had been developed as a resort by the South Manchurian Railways since 1909, is beautifully depicted in the map. The seaside resort, featuring prominent landmarks such as the Yamato Hotel, is set against the backdrop of Dairen Fuji, with the view extending to include Port Arthur and Dalian. Remarkably, even Korea and Japan can be seen in the distance, adding to the map's allure. The front and back covers of the map showcase Yoshida's vibrant color illustrations, enhancing its visual appeal. Staining and soiling particularly evident on reverse and only occasionally on map, surface of map abraded in one 2 x 4cm section resulting in a small hole, a little worn along the folds, few chips and tears along margin. In very secondhand condition but nevertheless a striking and interesting map. This is an extensive bird's-eye view map in colour of the fires caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. It centres around Tokyo and covers from Choshi in the east to Mt Fuji in the west. Numerous locations are labelled with their place names, the map draws the viewer's eye to the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake in the wider region. The reverse side provides detailed information on the recoveries in the year that has passed since the earthquake with 10 photographic illustrations and extensive text in Japanese printed in blue ink. The areas covered include Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura. Interestingly, recovery information on night-life areas in Tokyo and population on foreign residents in Yokohama are also supplied. The map was drawn by Yoshida Hatsuzaburo, who was born in Kyoto in 1884 and known as the "Hiroshige of the Taisho period" as he produced over 1600 bird's-eye view maps of numerous sights in Japan throughout his career. As the domestic tourism started to flourish in Japan, his bird's-eye view maps became very popular as they visually introduced topography, sightseeing sites, and their place names to the wider public.
