2. A Teacher Visits the Homes of Disadvantaged Children.

Abstract

A teacher reports on the understanding to be gained by visits to the homes of disadvantaged students. Because many parents cannot and do not come to scheduled conferences at school, the teacher visited the families, in this case to explain the availability of a summer school program. This teacher found that the parents of culturally disadvantaged children look to the school for personal guidance and leadership, and not only for the proper education of their children. Such home visits can help schools to plan experiences which meet the needs of the children. (NH)

3. Interferometric studies on the directional hardness of some single metal crystal

Abstract

A directional effect has been observed when indentation hardness tests were made with a Double-Cone indenter on single crystals of Tin and Bismuth, The distortion around the impressions made during, the teats was studied by multiple beam interferometric techniques. The surface contours shown by the fringes revealed deformation of an unsymmetrical nature, with "piling-up" and "sinking-in occurring in directions mutually at right angles. The fringes also revealed slip traces, of step heights of the order 200 A.u. or less, crossing the hill formations. As the direction of indentation on the surface was changed, the observed interference patterns varied continuously, the amount of deformation passing from a maximum to a minimum and returning to the original form when the indenter had rotated through 180°. Because of the presence of the slip traces an attempt was made to explain the directional effects observed, in terms of the plastic deformation properties of the crystals and the direction of the forces exerted on the crystal during indentation. As the Indenter was rotated with respect to the crystal, it was found that the value of the shear stress t component on the activated slip planes varied in a similar manner as the measured lengths of the indentations. It is suggested that the hardness variation is a measure of the change in yield stress in the crystal, as the, deformation takes place under strainless conditions.

20. Popoloca clause types.

Abstract

Popoloca1 has six kernel clause types and twelve derived (interrogative) types. The kernel clause types differ along a parameter of increasing complexity of predication. The equative clause (Cl1) is non-predicative: it does not predicate anything regarding its subject but simply equates that subject with a complement. Furthermore, it contains an equative particle only in negative clauses. The descriptive clause (Cl2) is weakly predicative in that the descriptive predicate is manifested by adjectives and nouns. Subject is optional in descriptive clauses not only in the sense that a clause-level subject need not be present but in the sense that a subject can be entirely absent from the clause (since no affixal subject occurs in descriptive predicates). The intransitive clause (Cl3) is fully predicative but the predication does not terminate in any sort of goal. The intransitive referential clause (Cl4) expresses a predication obliquely terminating in a referent — which may be Instrument, cause, purpose, or the locale of the predication. Although etically diverse these various sorts of referents are all cross referenced to by the same suffix -šin2 within the predicate. The transitive clause (Cl5) expresses a predication terminating directly upon an object. Abstract

The kinetics of derepression of valyl-, isoleucyl-, and leucyl-transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) synthetase formation was examined during valine-, isoleucine-, and leucine-limited growth. When valine was limiting growth, valyl-tRNA synthetase formation was maximally derepressed within 5 min, whereas the rates of synthesis of isoleucyl-, and leucyl-tRNA synthetases were unchanged. Isoleucine-restricted growth caused a maximal derepression of isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase formation in 5 min and derepression of valyl-tRNA synthetase formation in 15 min with no effect on leucyl-tRNA synthetase formation. When leucine was limiting growth, leucyl-tRNA synthetase formation was immediately derepressed, whereas valyl- and isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase formation was unaffected by manipulation of the leucine supply to the cells. These results support our previous findings that valyl-tRNA synthetase formation is subject to multivalent repression control by both isoleucine and valine. In contrast, repression control of iso-leucyl- and leucyl-tRNA synthetase formation is specifically mediated by the supply of the cognate amino acid.

25. Studies on isolated islets of Langerhans (Brockmann bodies) of teleost fishes I. Metabolic activity in vitro

Abstract

Conditions are described for incubation of islet tissue of toadfish (Opsanus tau). Sterile tissue culture medium (Eagle) was used at relatively low temperature (15–20°) for prolonged incubation periods. Tissue viability up to 48 h was demonstrated by the linearity of several metabolic indices: glucose uptake, lactate production, oxidation of substrate carbon to CO2, and incorporation of substrate carbon into both total trichloroacetic acid precipitate and acid ethanol soluble islet protein. The comparative use of different substrates showed about equal metabolism of carbon from glucose, mannose and pyruvate, whereas fructose carbon was metabolized at a much lower rate. Results obtained with differentially labeled glucose add further evidence for an operational hexose monophosphate pathway in islet tissue.
