He persuaded pilot Wes Barkla to make his landing on Otis Lodge Airport with the promise of a free chicken dinner. Fred Whittemore, vice-president of Northwest Airlines in charge of operations at St. Paul, Minnesota, donated a wind sock to Otis' field, impressed by his dedication to improve his wilderness airport.

The article presents excerpts from an article that deals with the construction and development of certain defense projects in the wilderness area in the Pacific Northwest which was removed from a February 1942 issue of the periodical "The Saturday Evening Post," on a ruling by the Office of Censorship. The region, which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, consists of 300,000 inhabitants.
