Most highland total rock samples define a single U-Pb isochron which corresponds to a metamorphism age of about 3.9 aeons. This age is also obtained for internal U-Pb isochrons for some of these samples. The data on 18 rock samples range from concordant samples with U-238/Pb-206 ratio of about 1.2 to discordant ones with U-238/Pb-206 ratio of about 0.02. This feature, coupled with a correlated pattern of U-238/Pb-204 ratios, indicates that Pb was extensively mobilized at about 3.9 aeons. The observed Pb-U fractionation is essentially due to Pb volatilization during the metamorphic events. Volatile Pb transport is not accompanied by similar effects in Rb and must therefore be attributed to a specific process. Rb-Sr internal isochrons for the same rocks determine distinct metamorphic events in the interval 3.85 to 4.00 aeons. It is concluded that highland samples from widely separated areas bear the imprint of an event or series of events in a narrow time interval which can be identified with a cataclysmic impacting rate of the moon at about 3.9 aeons, although diffrentiation by internal magma generation cannot be excluded.

Argon from neutron-irradiated mineral separates and whole rock samples of a metamorphosed breccia (65015) from Apollo 16 has been analyzed with a large number of gas extraction steps in order to obtain a high resolution in the apparent ages and to identify the gas released from different sources. The results on plagioclase show a Ar-40/Ar-39 plateau age of 3.98 b.y. which is attributed to the time of metamorphism, and an age of about 4.5 b.y. in the high-temperature fraction. Correlation of the release pattern with Ar-37 instead of Ar-39 permits the association of the approximate 4.5 b.y. age with relict plagioclasts which were demonstrated in previous petrographic and Rb-Sr studies as being unequilibrated. This result suggests that it is possible to identify lithic components which represent the early lunar crust.

The investigation reported continues a study conducted by Tera et al. (1974). An attempt is made to summarize all of the data currently available in the literature on terra materials and to discuss the implications of the upper intersection with the concordia curve. Data on total rocks and some plagioclase separates are presented in a graph. The data appear to give further support to a model of a terminal lunar cataclysm associated with intense global bombardment at about 3.9 aeons.

Mineralogical, petrological, and chemical analyses, along with Rb-Sr age and Ar-40/Ar-39 measurements, were carried out with the B-1 sample returned from the Luna 16 mission. The sample, weighing 62 mg, is a fine-grain basalt of ophitic structure. It differs from the Apollo samples in that the pyroxene and plagioclass contents are almost identical, and the ilmenite content (7%) lies between those of the Apollo-11 and Apollo-12 samples. Chemically, it is characterized by a high Sr content and a high K/U ratio.

Petrological, mineralogical, and chemical investigations of the B-1 Luna 16 sample have revealed that the sample is a fine-grained ophitic basalt which is distinguished from the Apollo samples by containing a single pyroxene, an ilmenite content intermediate to that of the Apollo samples, and subequal amounts of pyroxene and plagioclase. It is also distinguished by a high Sr content and a high K/U value.

Analyses have been made of lead, uranium, and thorium in two soil samples from the Luna 16 mission. Lead was found to be distinctly radiogenic, but significantly less radiogenic than other lunar soils. The Th/U ratio was found to be 3.8, and the uranium concentration was the lowest so far found for lunar soils.

Conclusions are presented regarding the age of formation and exposure to cosmic rays of rock 15555 (a large rock from near the rim of Hadley Rille presumed to be a fragment of the local bedrock), based on isotopic dilution K/Ar and Ar-40/Ar-39 methods. Comparisons are made with other investigators' findings, and some cases of agreement and divergence are discussed.

The Ar40-Ar39 dating technique has been applied to separated minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, quintessence and an 'ilmenite' concentrate), and whole rock samples of Apollo 14 rocks 14310 and 14073. Plagioclase shows the best gas retention characteristics, with no evidence of anomalous behavior and only a small amount of gas loss in the initial release. Ages determined from the plagioclase of 14310 and 14073 are (3.87 plus or minus 0.05) and (3.88 plus or minus 0.05) AE respectively. Low apparent ages at low release temperatures, which are frequently observed in whole rock Ar40-Ar39 experiments on lunar basalts, are shown to be principally due to gas loss in the high-K interstitial glass (quintessence) phase, confirming earlier suggestions. The decrease in apparent ages in the high-temperature release previously observed in several total rock samples of Apollo 14 basalts has been identified with the pyroxene. Plagioclase is also found to be the most suitable mineral for the determination of cosmic ray exposure ages, and exposure ages of 280 and 113 m.y. are found for 14310 and 14073, respectively, indicating that these rocks, which are very similar in many respects, have different exposure histories.

The Ar40-Ar39 gas retention age and the Ar38-Ar37 cosmic ray exposure age have been determined on a total rock sample of the basalt fragment B-1 returned from Mare Fecunditatis by the Luna 16 mission. This sample shows a large low-temperature loss of radiogenic Ar40 but defines a reasonably good high-temperature plateau at 3.45 plus or minus 0.04 b.y. This is presumed to identify the period of igneous activity in Mare Fecunditatis. This activity is found to be later than that in the area of Mare Tranquilitatis, but earlier than that in the area of Oceanus Procellarum and Mare Imbrium. The cosmic-ray exposure age was found to be 475 m.y.

An internal isochron was determined on a small basalt fragment (sample B-1) returned from the Luna 16 mission, which yields an age of 3.42 plus or minus 0.8 b.y. and a low initial Sr87/Sr86 value. A comparison is made of the data from four lunar missions to mare sites which shows that the last period of major flooding of the mare basins is confined to a narrow time interval of only 0.55 b.y. The direct evidence of major lunar magmatic activity appears to be confined to the interval from 3.1 to 4.0 b.y. The Sr87/Sr86 values for all mare basalts are extremely primitive and lie in a rather narrow range. A diagram is given for initial Sr87/Sr86 as a function of time for all lunar rocks.

High precision isotopic composition measurements of Sm have been carried out for two terrestrial and seven lunar samples from three Apollo sites. The lunar samples, selected to show a wide variation in cosmic ray exposure ages, have a wide range of enrichments in Sm-150/Sm-154 (up to 0.8%) and depletions in Sm-149/Sm-154 which are due to neutron capture. The ratio of the number of neutrons captured per atom by Sm-149 to Gd-157 is 0.9 and reflects a hardened lunar neutron spectrum. This ratio is in reasonable but not exact agreement with that obtained from the theoretical lunar neutron energy spectrum of Lingenfelter, Canfield and Hampel. The average composition for terrestrial samarium is given.

An internal Rb-Sr isochron for the large basalt boulder 15555 returned from the edge of Hadley rille by the Apollo 15 mission yields an age 3.32 (plus or minus 0.06) b.y. and an initial Sr-88/Sr-86, I = 0.69934 plus or minus 5. This age and I value fall well within the range obtained for the Apollo 12 basalts from the Ocean of Storms and may indicate that extensive lava flows occurred at 3.3 b.y. over widespread areas of the moon. The Sr composition of the anorthosite 15415 is as low as that of plagioclase extracted from the Apollo 11 low K rocks. The initial Sr composition of 15415 for an assumed age of 3.3 to 4.6 b.y. is extremely primitive and provides further evidence for an extremely short formation interval of a nonchondritic moon with respect to an origin in time defined by BABI.

Measurements have been conducted of the amounts and isotopic composition of Xe and Kr in silicate inclusions of several iron meteorites. It is shown that the Xe and Kr contents are comparable to chondritic values. The isotopic compositions show trapped gas of both chondritic and atmospheric composition. Large spallation effects occur in some of the meteorites; the spallation spectra in some instances differ from those reported for stone meteorites. In several meteorites, very large neutron capture effects on Br and I occur. All samples have pronounced Xe129 excesses which apparently indicate differences in the formation times from chondrites of less than about 100 million years; however, the presence of trapped Xe132 in silicates which were enclosed in molten Fe-Ni and cooled slowly proves that they were not entirely outgassed, so that some of the Xe129 excess may also be trapped.

The U distribution in rock 12013 was studied by fission track and elemental mapping techniques. Major U-bearing phases are whitlockite, apatite, zircon, and phase beta, which is a Zr-Ti mineral rich in Fe, Nb, Y, REE, and containing up to 3.6% UO2, 4.7% ThO2 and 4.2% PbO. Calculated microprobe ages for phase beta average 4.0 b.y. and are in reasonable agreement with Rb-Sr and K-Ar ages. Phase beta plays a significant role in the U-Th-Pb systematics of rock 12012 and may play a similar role in the model ages of lunar soil.

Internal Rb-Sr isochrons were determined on four basaltic rocks and on a basaltic clast from a breccia from the Fra Mauro landing site. An internal isochron was determined for rock 12004 and yielded a value in agreement with previous results for basaltic rocks from the Apollo 12 site. The crystallization ages for Apollo 14 basalts are only 0.2 to 0.3 AE older than were found for mare basalts from the Sea of Tranquility. Assuming these leucocratic igneous rocks to be representative of the Fra Mauro site, it follows that there were major igneous processes active in these regions, and presumably throughout the highlands, at times only slightly preceding the periods at which the maria were last flooded.

We have used the Ar-40/Ar-39 dating technique on eight samples of Apollo 14 rocks (14053, 14310), breccia fragments (14321), and soil fragments (14001, 14167). The large basalt fragments give reasonable Ar-40/Ar-39 release patterns and yield well defined crystallization ages of 3.89-3.95 aeons. Correlation of the Ar-40/Ar-39 release patterns with Ar-39/Ar-37 patterns showed that the low temperature fractions with high radiogenic argon loss came from K-rich phases. A highly shocked sample and fragments included in the breccia yield complex release patterns with a low temperature peak. The total argon age of these fragments is 3.95 aeons. Cosmic ray exposure ages on these samples are obtained from the ratio of spallogenic Ar-38 to reactor induced Ar-37 and show a distinct grouping of low exposure ages of 26 m.y. correlated with Cone crater. Other samples have exposure ages of more than 260 m.y. and identify material with a more complex integrated cosmic age exposure history.

Ages were determined by the Ar-40/Ar-39 method on two metaclastic rocks returned from the lunar highlands north of Mare Fecunditatis by the Luna 20 probe. Both samples gave very well-defined argon retention ages of 3.90 plus or minus 0.04 AE which are indistinguishable from each other within a resolution of 0.02 AE. Both fragments, 22006 and 22007, are highly recrystallized polymict breccias; there is no evidence of radiogenic Ar-40, and the age almost surely dates the time of recrystallization. The cosmic ray exposure ages of these fragments are similar and high: 900 million years for 22006, 1300 million years for 22007. 22007 also contains substantial trapped argon with a high Ar-40/Ar-36. The Luna 20 results greatly extend the area of the moon's surface exhibiting a well-defined record of metamorphism at 3.9 AE. So far, lunar history in the interval from 4.6 to 3.9 AE is not preserved in the ages of surface rocks. This obliteration suggests lunar-wide metamorphic conditions occurring or terminating at this time as a result of major impacts.

For the soils of two lunar highland sites from which samples were returned by the Luna 20 probe and the Apollo 16 mission, Rb-Sr data are presented. For comparison, the results of some additional analyses of Apollo 15 soils are also given. All these soils indicate that an early lunar differentiation process occurred in the interval of 4.3-4.6 b.y. and resulted in the formation of a crust rich in K, Rb, U, and Th.

Sample 68415 is one of the few large crystalline rocks returned from Apollo 16. A meaningful age may be obtained if the sample studied represents silicate material which was isotopically homogenized at the last time it was melted. It is also assumed that the constituent phases of the sample have remained closed systems subsequent to that time. The material was crushed and separated into different fractions with the aid of heavy liquids. It was found that the mineral separates are mixtures of at least three distinct phases with intrinsically different Rb/Sr ratios. An age of 3.84 aeon was determined.

Study of the isotopic composition of gadolinium and samarium in four soil and seven drill stem samples returned by the Apollo 15 mission. The results show the possibility to date sedimentary processes on the lunar surface for time scales of around 100 million years because of the particular dependence of neutron capture reactions on depth. The neutron flux has a distinct peak as a function of depth. This peak appears to lie below the level of shallow cratering for time scales of less than one billion years and consequently forms a readily identified marker layer of both depth and time.

The isotopic composition of Pb and the elemental concentration of U, Th and Pb were measured on 'total' rock samples 14053, 14073 and 14310 and on mineral separates of 14310 and 14053. These are the first Pb-U isochrons obtained for lunar basalts and indicate a reasonable solution to the previous discrepancy between the different methods of 'absolute' age determination. The resulting U-Pb isochron ages are compatible with the Rb-Sr and K-Ar ages on the same rocks. However, it is not possible to establish a precise time of 'crystallization' from the Pb-U data because of the small angle of intersection between the linear arrays and the concordia curve. These data show that total rock model ages do not in general yield crystallization ages. The data on 14310 and 14053 show that these rocks were formed containing a highly radiogenic initial lead which accounts for the excessively high total rock model ages by the U-Th-Pb method. The data prove that at the time of extrusion of some basalts, unsupported lead with extremely high Pb-207/Pb-206 ratios was added to the lunar surface.

Average irradiation depths and exposure ages of Tranquillity Base rocks are computed on the basis of eight analyses of the five noble gases in whole rock samples and lunar separates from lunar rocks, in conjunction with available literature data. Correlated variations in He-3/Ne-21 and Ar-38/Ne-21 reflect shielding differences. This correlation cannot be explained by diffusion losses, even though evidence for gas loss is obtained from mineral separate data. A qualitative shielding sequence is constructed which agrees reasonably well with the sequence based on Gd isotopic data.
