Three experiments were conducted with 63 yearling wethers to investigate the influence of supplemental nitrogen in the form of natural proteins (soybean and cottonseed meal) or as urea and biuret combined with an energy source on voluntary intake, digestibility of nutrients and nitrogen balance when sheep were fed low quality (2.57 and 4.63% crude protein) pangolagrass hay. In general, the supplements were consumed at levels of 130 to 150 g per sheep daily which provided 8.0 to 9.5% total dietary crude protein. Supplements containing either 6.32 or 7.12% urea were not consumed completely and resulted in a lower total dietary crude protein than occurred with natural protein or biuret supplements. In each of the 3 experiments, the addition of supplemental nitrogen with an energy source increased (P<.01) hay intake and improved (P<.01) the apparent digestibility of nitrogen. All sheep receiving supplemental nitrogen were in positive nitrogen balance while those consuming hay alone or hay plus a low-protein (5.84%) energy source were in negative balance. In general, organic matter digestibility increased due to the addition of supplements containing organic matter of greater digestibility. Cellulose digestibility was not influenced significantly by treatment but was numerically greater in each experiment when nitrogen was added. Biuret plus an energy source gave a response similar to that obtained with either soybean or cotton-seed meal and in the experiment, where compared, urea and biuret responded similarly.

The asymptotic expansions of the scattering amplitude at high energy obtained previously for a Schrödinger equation of motion, are extended to the cases of a Dirac and Klein-Gordon particle. The method followed here is based on the extension of the so called Grel’fand and Levitan operator which gives a uniform connection of two complete bases in the Hilbert space. A compact expression for the general term of the expansion is found. This allows its evaluation by means of recurrence relations. In questo lavoro abbiamo studiato dal punto di vista teorico la distribuzione stazionaria nello spazio ordinario e delle velocità dei neutroni generati da una sorgente puntiforme ed isotropa posta in un mezzo idrogenato di dimensioni illimitate. Nella prima parte si prendono in considerazione solo i neutroni di risonanza; i termici faranno oggetto della seconda parte. Abbiamo tenuto conto oltre che dell’urto contro i protoni, per il quale abbiamo assunto una distribuzione isotropa delle velocità dopo l’urto nel sistema del baricentro, anche dell’urto controgli atomi pesanti. Abbiamo assunto costante il rapporto delle sue sezioni d’urto e ritenuto che il cammino libero medio Λ(v) per urti contro protoni sia una funzione lineare della velocità:dovev0è la velocità con la quale i neutroni sono emessi dalla sorgente. Il calcolo numerico è stato eseguito per l’acqua. La curva teorica che dà la densità dei neutroni di data energia in funzione della distanza dalla sorgente è riportata in fig. 1. L’unità di misura sull’asse delle ascisse è data da Λ(v0).

La fotodissociazione e la formazione dei due nuclei H3ed He3possono servire a dare buone informazioni sulle configurazioni di questi nuclei e sulla natura delle forze nucleari. In questo lavoro abbiamo trattato il problema dal punto di vista teorico. Abbiamo sistematicamente preso in considerazione le proprietà di simmetria nello spazio ordinario ed in quello di spin e spin isotopico. Nel primo numero descriviamo il formalismo adoperato, nel secondo viene discusso lo stato fondamentale di H3e di He3che risulta dato prevalentemente da una autofunzione completamente simmetrica nelle coordinate di spazio. Nel terzo numero studiamo la transizione magnetica in uno stato finale che è costituito da un deutone nello stato fondamentale ed un nucleone libero. Questa transizione è proibita per configurazioni completamente simmetriche di spazio. Nel quarto numero abbiamo valutato la transizione elettrica in uno stato finale costituito da un deutone3S ed un nucleone. La fig. 1 fornisce i risultati numerici per la sezione d’urto totale. Nel numero 5 abbiamo considerato il caso della transizione diretta in tre nucleoni liberi. Nell’ultimo numero si trovano le formule per la sezione d’urto di cattura di un nucleone libero da parte di un deutone3S. The photodisintegration and the formation by radiative capture of the two nuclei H3and He3are well suited to give information on the configuration of these nuclei and on the nature of nuclear forces. In this paper we have treated the problem theoretically. We have systematically taken into account the symmetry properties in ordinary space and in the spin and isotopic spin spaces. In the first section we give the formalism which we have used. In the second we discuss the spacial configuration of the ground state of H3and He3which appears to be predominantly totally symmetric in the space coordinates. In the third section we discuss the magnetic transition into a final state which consists of a3S deuteron and a free nucleon. This transition is forbidden for configurations totally symmetrical in space. This accounts for the observed low capture cross section for thermal neutrons on deuterons. In the fourth section we calculate the electric transition into a final state consisting of a3S deuteron and a nucleon. Fig. 1 gives the numerical results for the total cross section. In section five we have considered the case of the direct transition into three free nucleons. In the last section we present the formulae for the cross section of the capture of a nucleon by a3S deuteron. Eventual comparison with experiment is discussed in the concluding remarks.

This case of acute intermittent porphyria is presented because of the occurrence of convulsive seizures as the only neurological manifestation, as well as several other unusual features. The porphyrins are pigments composed of four pyrrole rings connected by four methane bridges. These pigments are fundamentally related to cellular metabolism and are present in pure or bound form in both plant and animal life. Porphyrins are present in respiratory pigments such as hemoglobin, chlorophyll, cytochrome, and catalase. They occur in the pure state in the central nervous system in man. Porphyrins are excreted in the urine normally in amounts of 5 to 10 mcg. per day. There is an excessive excretion of the pigment in porphyria. An abnormal porphyrin metabolism is the basis of the clinical syndrome of porphyria.There are three types of porphyria: the congenital, the acute intermittent (under consideration here), and the mixed or chronic form.
