The authors report the results of a study concerning the determination of factors which are associated with the success or failure of management information system (MIS) development projects. The article offers information regarding a study on the role of psychologists, in the development of man-machine systems. A system has been defined as any organized group of activities involving men and machines, directed towards the solution of a given problem or set of problems. Accordingly, machines were devised to extend the range, power, speed or precision of the human operator. However, the objective of the man-machine system has been urgently needed that newly developed equipments were rushed into service without considering the demands made on the human operator.

Since little substantiated evidence exists concerning the features that should or should not be included in the man-machine interface of interactive bibliographic search and retrieval (IBSR) systems, an informal survey tapping the opinions of scientists active in this research area was conducted.
