Abstract

3. Navajo and Non-Navajo Teachers: A Comparison of Characteristics.

Abstract

The study described the characteristics of Navajo and non-Navajo teachers and determined their similarities and differences. In the spring of 1970, 65 Navajo teachers of Navajo children and a sample of 100 teachers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs personnel including Negro, white, Oriental, and other American Indian tribes were mailed a questionnaire. Forty-two Navajo and 83 non-Navajo teachers responded. The instrument had two parts: (1) items which produced data on the teacher's background, including formal education and home style, and (2) an adjective check-list which gave general teacher perceptions of the Navajo child and four other concepts considered pertinent to the teaching process. Background data of the two groups were significantly different except in areas pertaining to formal education and preparation for teaching. Navajo teachers started life as typical Navajos and were transformed, through education, to atypical individuals. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding their major perceptions of the Navajo child nor in their selected educational objectives for the child. Navajo teachers were more sensitive to the child and found the child to be more likable and to have more scholastic potential. The study concluded that while there were significant differences between the two groups, there were enough similiarities to form a basis for teamwork on behalf of Navajo children. (Author/NQ)

4. Research and Development in Vocational and Technical Education: Non-Metropolitan Areas. Final Report.

Abstract

A strategic intelligence unit and a research activities unit were the two main components of a project to undertake inderdisciplinary discussions and studies of problems associated with vocational and technical education in nonmetropolitan areas. Reasons for an interdisciplinary attack were: (1) changes affecting town and rural residents including a multitude of political, social, and economic trends, (2) changes related to job opportunities, school tax burdens, and forced occupational and geographic migration, (3) substitution of capital for labor in farm and industry, drastically decreasing the opportunity for labor utilization in rural areas, (4) reduced farming opportunities, increasing the need for nonagricultural vocational education, (5) small towns and rural areas becoming oversupplied with social institutions designed for less mobile, more agrarian, and more populous areas of a recent past, and (6) questions being raised about the need for consolidation of local governments, businesses, churches, educational structures, and local community services. The appendixes within this report summarize the results of the various activities of the strategic intelligence unit and research activities unit. Abstract

1. Tuberculous lesions were found in 69 per cent. of persons (386) who died in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, from disease other than tuberculosis. 2. In 50 per cent. of cases calcareous, that is healed lesions were found. 3. In 9 per cent. the lesions were quiescent and in another 9 per cent. they were active. 4. Lungs and tracheo-bronchial glands are the organs most frequently involved in adults. 5 . Lungs, tracheo-bronchial glands and mesenterie glands in that order, are the most common sites of tubercle. 6. Other organs, except cervical glands, are always infected secondarily to those mentioned above. 7. Tuberculosis of the kidney is always secondary and does not heal. 8. There is evidence of a marked tuberculisation occurring during infancy of abdominal type and of a late and more constant tuberculisation affecting lungs and bronchial glands in later life. 9. Evidence is afforded by the figures relating to abdominal glandular lesions of a marked tendency for these lesions to disappear within` the individual. The degree of tuberculisation of the population must therefore very considerably exceed the percentage of the tuberculous lesions which have been proved in this series of examinations. It must be greater than 69 per cent. 10. The facts which have been obtained from the study of this particular population indicate that in order that correct conclusions may be obtainable from post-mortem material, the factors of age incidence with respect to the various manifestations of the disease must be taken into account. 11. From the facts demonstrated that tuberculosis in later life is mainly pulmonary in type and subacute or chronic in nature and that in a large proportion of cases the pulmonary must have been preceded in the individual by definite abdominal tuberculosis, it would appear that a resistance to this disease is active during later life, . and that the disease in a large number of instances must.h &ve been due to alighting up of an early infection and not to an reinfection.

46. Educational Provisions for the Alaskan Natives Since 1867.

The study compiles and records the history of the administration of education for Alaskan natives since the United States purchased the territory from Russia in 1876. Chapter 1, An Overview of the Development of the Alaskan Native, covers the development of missionary and government schools, the growth and development of Native education from 1906 to 1931, and the intervention of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Chapter 2, Curriculum Problems, explains missionary, reindeer and relocation influences, Native arts and crafts, health and sanitation needs, and bilingual influences. The Administrative Structure of Alaskan Native Education Under the Bureau of Indian Affairs, chapter 3, describes the administrative and supervisory structure prior to 1931 and since 1931, educational objectives for Alaskan Native education, the administrative functions of the Alaska BIA branch, and the legal status of the Alaskan Native. The report emphasizes that, in considering Native education in Alaska, the unique influences which are not found in other States, such as a vast land area, extreme temperatures, travel difficulties, and cultural differences, must be considered. 47. The Effects of the Presentation of a Structure of the Problem-Solving Process Upon Problem-Solving Ability in Seventh Grade Mathematics.

Abstract

Analyzed was the increase in problem-solving ability when students were exposed to, and participated in, various aspects of a problem-solving process. Also analyzed was the nature of the relationship between problem-solving ability, as measured by the author's instrument, and the intelligence quotient, creativity index, and sex of seventh grade mathematics students. The sample for this study consisted of students in ten seventh grade mathematics classes from the Indiana University Junior High School. Students from the high and low IQ experimental groups were matched respectively with students from the high and low IQ control groups on the basis of their problem solving ability. The analysis of data appeared to justify the following conclusions: (1) special study of a structure of the problem-solving process did not enhance the problem-solving ability of seventh grade students, (2) intelligence was a significant factor in the determination of problem solving ability, (3) special instruction in a structure of the problem-solving process did not appear to significantly improve the problem-solving ability of students regardless of their level of IQ, (4) creativity was not a significant factor in the determination of problem-solving ability.
